Book Description

"Bowen has taken the antihero of Hemingway and Hammett and brought him up to date......As the best literary novels are able to do, Coyote Wind brings many worlds together and hones the language to create a fresh, memorable character and a profound vision." -Jonis Agee, The New York Times Book Review Featuring Montanan cattle-brand inspector and occasional sleuth Gabriel Du Pr, Peter Bowen's spare and lyrical mysteries have always received the critics' highest praise. Now, the first two mysteries in the series, Coyote Wind and Specimen Song, are brought together in one volume.Praise for the Gabriel Du Pr mysteries:"Wonderful....wise....Hilarious as the satire often is, what makes these stories so rare is the byplay among the natives." -Washington Post Book World"Bowen tells his story in short, perfectly crafted scenes. The dialogue, the relationships, the Montana landscape, and, most of all, the quirky and memorable characters are all matchlessly drawn. If John Nichols wrote mystery fiction, it might read a lot like Peter Bowen." -The Denver Post"Bowen's writing is lean and full of mordant observations. His hardy characters....come to life, and his wry humor provides relief from the haunting, wind-bitten cattle-ranch landscape." -Publishers WeeklyAUTHORBIO: Peter Bowen, a Montanan, writes of the West.Cowboy, hunting and fishing guide, folksinger, poet, essayist, and novelist, he's written the picaresque Yellowstone Kelly historical novels, humor columns and essays on blood sport as Coyote Jack, and the Gabriel Du Pr mysteries.

Coyote Wind and Specimen Song: The First Two Montana Mysteries Featuring Gabriel Du Pre (A Montana Mystery Featuring Gabriel Du Pre)

First of the MANY books in this series I have read, but only the first of many since. A bit formulaic in its approach and story line, but good character development and interesting plots. I enjoyed the Montana setting and the introduction to Montana politics and peoples. I did not agree with all of the notions and lifestyle choices expressed but found the two works worth the read!

4 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining and the characters are great!.......2003-12-11

This series of books was recommended to me by my mom. We usually share the same opinions on books, but I wasn't sure about this one.

It took me awhile to get into the first book, but I did. The author switches viewpoints a lot which took me awhile to get used to. Once I did, it was great.

In the second book he picked up right where he left off. The characters are the same and the author seems to be more in tune with the characters (things flow more smoothly in my opinion).

Both stories are your generic murder mysteries with Indian superstition thrown in. In the first one Du'pre is trying to find out who killed his new friends brother 25 years ago. In the second one, someone is killing Indians in Washington DC. Bart, his new friend, falls in love with a detective in DC and Du Pre solves the mystery. Well I should say he takes justice into his own hands.

If you like interesting characters this series is great.

5 out of 5 stars First two volumes of a unique Big Sky Country series.......2001-08-07

I think it was a mistake to bundle these two books together, even though they are the first two in a series of Montana mysteries featuring Gabriel Du Pré---and even though I saved money by not having to buy them separately. "Coyote Wind" is a definite 'five stars.' "Specimen Song" drops down to 'three stars.'

"Coyote Wind" is a darn near perfect specimen of a mixed-genre mystery cum western. Gabriel Du Pré is laconic, honorable, and wise to the ways of the Big Sky Country---a throwback to the noble cowboy-hero of Zane Grey's novels. He is a vulnerable hero, a Métis descendant of the French Voyageurs and Plains Indians. He has problems with his teenage daughter, who has shaved off part of her hair and dyed the rest of it a weird color. His mistress won't marry him because in the eyes of the Church, she is still married to the sleaze who deserted her many years past. He is plagued throughout the book by an alcoholic Métis prophet.

Du Pré's voice is unique, and perfect for this story. His dialogue is short, punchy, flicked with mordant barbs---an arrow in your heart when you are least expecting it. Two chapters into the book, found myself talking, thinking like Du Pré. Sounds like this:

"Du Pré knelt, looked, crossed himself. Some days he didn't believe in God, but he did believe in crossing himself.

"Maybe this let you sleep now," said Du Pré. He picked up the white skull, the color of the giant puffball mushrooms that came up in pastures in the wet years. The mushrooms were bigger, and startling in the green.

"'Now I got someone's head in my hands, I thinking on frying mushrooms,' Du Pré said aloud. `Dumb bastard'."

The mystery of who killed whom in "Coyote Wind" is fairly easy to unravel once you get to know and care about the characters. It almost had to occur, considering the people involved. It becomes more important to see if Du Pré can help a friend stop drinking, rather than to figure out who murdered his friend's brother. As Du Pré keeps telling everyone who will listen: "I ain't a cop...I am a [brand inspector]."

Nevertheless, it is Du Pré who is tapped to solve a thirty-year-old murder. He goes about it in a style that is perfectly tuned to his character. Not a single false note from Du Pré or his fiddle.

"Coyote Wind" is a very satisfying read.

"Specimen Song" features the same cast of characters as its predecessor. However, their personalities are exaggerated to the point of disbelief. The Métis prophet performs magic tricks. Du Pré goes jaunting back and forth to Washington D.C. in his friend's private jet, after turning the brand inspection business over to his son-in-law. He also canoes through the Canadian taiga, following the river route of his Voyageur ancestors. All of this traveling is in search of a killer, but somehow Du Pré seems more blustery than heroic when he is removed from the land where he can read the turn of a leaf.

Or the body language of an enemy.

I very much hope that Du Pré returns to Big Sky Country in volume III.

5 out of 5 stars Good mysteries and great characters!.......2000-08-25

If you enjoy character development, these are the stories for you. Gabriel Du Pre' and his cohorts are delightful---people you'd like to meet and spend time with---and you learn to know them as you get deeper into these novels. These are mystery stories written with a wonderful ear for dialogue and a wry take on life. Buy this book and enjoy these novels; you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Myths Retold.......2007-01-10

Any fan of Magic will adore this book, it is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars A great place to start the series.......2004-05-10

Its hard to find good fantasy shortstory collections. Everyone is always devoured by those epic trilogies. MTG isn't really an epic, which is probably why it is less popular (and the fact that it is related to a card game). But this is one of my favorite anthologies. Every tale is wonderfully told, and many of them are very original.

The first myth, "Blue Moon," is a clever and interesting story. "Isle of the Damned" is a more haunting story, but very memorable. "Leviathan" is an amusing tale, similar to those flood myths we've all read about. "Phyrexian Creations" is a deep, dark story about Yawgmoth. My favorite myth, "The
Deathbringer," is surprisingly original and very compelling.

I highly recommend this collection to all readers. The MTG series is an interesting series, yet underrated. Look out for other anthologies like "Colors of Magic" and "Rath and Storm."

4 out of 5 stars Interesting stories in one anthology.......2002-10-14

Some of the stories here are great. One of my favorites is the one on Yawgmoth's rise and reign of power. Some of the stories are incredibly gory and 'graphic', at least for a book. An interesting Anthology that I enjoyed even more than Colors of Magic.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2000-08-25

Jess Lebow's second MTG anthology edit, this book is better than the year's previous, Colors of Magic. In addition to the exciting tells of the folklore of Dominaria, there is also a preview chapter of J. Robert King's novel Invasion (October 2000) where Phyrexia let's it's thousands of ships and armies fight for Yawgmoth's homeland (to true MTG storyline fans, the book is worth it just for the chapter alone).

It was a pleasure reading the book with such a good array of writers. I hope you all enjoy it too.

5 out of 5 stars Myths of Magic.......2000-08-03

I wanted ten stars but they wouldn't give it to me. So I had to make due with 5. That should tell you most of what you need to know about this book. But I'll give you a little more info to help you decide to get this book. For one thing, it has many of the great authors of the Magic: The Gathering novels. But with it's interesting stories this book is a one of a kind, great for all M:TG players and readers. One book this summer, Myths of Magic is it. Read this book!

5 out of 5 stars Get this book. It will Change and Save your life!!!!!!!!.......2007-09-17

My mind was filled with so much worry, so much doubt. I begun avoiding people and certain situations. I had lost touch with reality and really didn't care for living anymore because I felt hopeless. But the techniques in this book saved my life and gave me hope. It took a little while but I eventually started feeling better which made me want to read and practice the techniques even more. If you are suffering from anxiety, get this book, which teaches you to lower your expectations, embrace your fears and not fight the feeling but to allow it to occur, and to learn how to go with the feeling. I don't know where I would be if it weren't for this book.

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-01-28

I have not finished the book in whole, but thus far it has been very helpful to me! I have been determined to work though this without tons of medications and things provided in this book help me with this goal!

3 out of 5 stars Helpful ideas for coping.......2007-01-03

This book offers some good ideas for dealing with anxiety -- nothing new if you've read many books of this kind, but it would be helpful for someone who is new to panic attacks. An informative book, but not the key -- I'm still looking for that.

5 out of 5 stars A new way of thinking about anxiety.......2006-09-29

When the author said we give ourselves two impossible choices by telling ourselves we can't stay because of our fear and panic, yet we can't leave because of the failure and humiliation, she really hit it on the nail for me. Giving myself two possible choices - it's okay to stay, and it's okay to leave - opened up a new reality for me. I never told myself before I read this book that it's okay if I leave a panicked situation. I always beat myself on the head and feared it meant I could never go back. I didn't realize how harshly I was treating myself until I saw another possibility, the "B-Talk," which is about accepting myself, giving myself options, and seeing anxiety from a new way. This book really is a life changer.

5 out of 5 stars Like a cure for agoraphobia!.......2006-06-29

I was homebound from 19 to 22 with agoraphobia. With counseling, Paxil, and the tools in this book I was able to go from being afraid of my own shadow to attending a 48,000-student University 1000 miles away from home by myself. I no longer have agoraphobia symptoms whatsoever and still keep a copy of this book around to read just in case I ever feel the fear again.

Get this book! It is so worth the small investment to retrieve your sanity and get rid of the panic and fear!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK OF CURES, NUTRITION, AND HEALING FOODS.......2006-09-19

Five HEALTHFUL Stars!! In this great compendium Jerry Baker's expert nutrition team, Karen Cicero and Colleen Pierre, shows that many foods can not only taste good and be the source of healthful nutrients, but have healing powers that many of us may not be aware of and can apply in specific cases of need. In an age when we hear so many individual news stories on the benefits of a particular food, it's hard to remember them over time. Now we have one place to look for many common foods available to us all that pack a nutritional punch and HEAL. Not exhaustive to be sure, but a great reference book nonetheless that outlines common foods that it claims can fight cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, osteoperosis, memory loss, etc. And the benefit cited in most of the listed foods is the #1 killer in the US: heart disease.

This book is practically a summary of the healing powers and cures of a wide variety of specifically targeted foods. In addition, there is a "Shop and Serve Solutions" area for each food with tips on selecting, storing, and preparing them. And there are 111 easy-to-prepare healthful healing recipes. It also has great tables comparing the benefits of the varioius types of berries, another table on the benefits of various types of beans, and yet another on the various types of oils.

I know that a well-known health newsletter held a "Healthiest Vegetable" contest and their tests revealed the "Sweet Potato" (no skin) is the king of veggies, so I checked for it first and it's here, along with a great 'sweet potato fries' recipe. Incidentially, "Raw Carrots" and "Cooked Carrots" (yes, listed separately) come in second & third respectively among veggies and they are likewise listed with a really simple "Sugar Baby Carrots" recipe. The rest of the health magazine top five are: "Spinach", and "Collard Greens" (a great fighter against cataracts and macular degeneration). And they are all listed in this book with extensive data on their benefits. So this book is on target in the comparison with the health newsletter's extensive research results.

Laid out in alphabetical order, literally from A to Y, with a 'bullet list' of what each food "Battles", what it "Bolsters", and a table of it's nutritional value (calories, fat, saturated fat, sodium, cholesterol, etc..). Naturally, the first food is "Apples", which "Battles" cancer, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and stroke. Apples "Bolsters" (bowel) regularity. And so on, all the way through 117 foods to "Yogurt" on p 485. On p. 490, there is a "Super-charged Menus" list of breakfasts, lunches and dinners for 7 days using recipes contained in the book. Very practical! it's a very readable book that may have you looking at some rather common foods differently and stocking up on them because of their benefits. It did so for me! This book could vastly improve your health or unknowingly save your life!! Five HUGE NUTRITIONAL Stars!!

2 out of 5 stars Not very helpful and too verbose for a beginner.......2006-10-19

The title is self explanatory. This book will not be too helpful to a beginner as it explains everything with very little graphics and it is difficult to visualise aspects such as the grooming of the dog. I thought the toilet training bit was lacking as well and served more as a sweeping generalisation of known information than anything that would be truly helpful to a novice.

On the plus side, the writing is pleasantly light, although this does not make up for the lack of illustrations and depth.

The book has great pictures but no real detail about how to build ponds or waterfalls. How disappointed we were when we received the book. We will look for other books but will not purchase them online. We need to be able to see what is inside the cover.

3 out of 5 stars There are better choices.......2006-04-19

In my opinion, this book is a very superficial overview of pond construction. A far better choice is "Ortho's All About Building Waterfalls, Ponds, and Streams", for the same price [or slightly cheaper]. "Ortho's" covers the topic much more thoroughly than this "complete guide".

    5 out of 5 stars Good fundamentals........2005-07-07

Excellent fundamental instructions for ponds and waterfalls. If you are doing a stream also, you might want to consult another title or two on the same subject. You will also need some more education on plants for your pond. But for basic pond and waterfall, this is the best I have read.

    1 out of 5 stars Only pictures.......2003-05-27

If you are a beginer in pond building and you need everything explained to details, do not buy this book. I bought it and it's just not good. You can read it under a hour and you'll see only pictures with nothing on them.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2000-10-02

                Book Description

When Doris Kartinyeri was a month old, her mother died. The family gathered to mourn their loss and welcome the new baby home. But Doris never returned to her family - she was stolen from the hospital and placed in Colebrook Home, where she stayed for the next fourteen years. The legacy of being a member of the Stolen Generations continued for Doris as she was placed in white homes as a virtual slave, struggled through relationships and suffered with bi-polar depression. “Kick the tin” was a game Doris Kartinyeri played in the Colebrook Home for Aboriginal children. This is the story of a life that has been kicked around. And it is the compelling and sometimes witty story of a courageous journey into the soul of the individual to find meaning and substance after the loss of everything that the rest of us take for granted. Doris Kartinyeri is a Ngarrindjeri woman stolen from her family and institutionalized in a home for Aboriginal children as an infant. The recent report, Bringing Them Home, on the Stolen Generation documents the consequences of the government policy on the effects of removing children from their families.

5 out of 5 stars Kick the Tin : a life that has been kicked around.......2001-02-11

It must be very sad for a child to use a pillow to cuddle at night for comfort and security but that is what Colebrook children did.

Doris KarTINyeri wasn't an orphan or a homeless child. She had her own loving family who was waiting for her to return. But when she was only a month old and her mother died, she was stolen from the hospital and placed there... at Colebrook Home with other stolen Aboriginal children.

'Kick the Tin' is a game Doris KarTINyeri played at the Colebrook Home. It is a story of a life that has been kicked around. It tells of an unforgettable experience about young Doris whose heritage had been taken from her. She was made to lose her culture and language.

Fourteen years at Colebrook Home, she felt no bond with her true family. She refused even her own sister which caused great pain for her natural family.

Many of the Stolen Generation didn't have a chance to come back to their loved ones, their families and their homes.

They missed out on knowing their language, culture, tradition and identity...

Imagine how upset you and your family would be if you didn't have any meaning for a word such as 'mother'. Doris' life was just like that.

For me, the real beauty of this book is watching the world through Doris' eyes. The way she appreciates everything that we take for granted is so eye opening! It is simply priceless! I want you to find out how good it is for yourself!

5 out of 5 stars Imagine your mother has just died after giving birth........2000-12-01

Imagine your mother has just died after giving birth. You go to the hospital to pick up your sister to find she has been taken by welfare workers and put in a home. Imagine you are that baby, that you grow up never knowing how badly your family missed you. Imagine being an older kid in the home, an 'aunt' to this 'special baby', only to later lose contact with her; yet another separation. This is the story of Doris Kartinyeri who spent the first 14 years of her life in a home for children taken from their Aboriginal families. But it is also the story of her sister Doreen and her 'antie' Lowtja O'Donoghue and the family she only later came to know. The ripples of Kartinyeri's pain can be see spreading through a wide community. Kartinyeri writes simply, directly and movingly of her experiences, her struggle to reconnect with her people and her battle with bi-polar disorder.

The aim was to hide from `it' then get back to the tin before being caught. In the middle of Kartinyeri, there is also a tin. This is the story of a courageous journey into the soul of the individual to find meaning and substance after the loss of family, culture and heritage.

Doris Kartinyeri is a Ngarrindjeri woman stolen from her family and institutionalised in a home for Aboriginal children as an infant. The recent report, Bringing Them Home, on the Stolen Generation documents the consequences of the government policy on the effects of removing children from their families. Doris Kartinyeri was born in 1945 into the Ngarrindjeri community. She was one of thousands of Australian Aboriginals stolen as an infant after her mother's death. Her childhood was spent at Colebrook home with other stolen Aboriginal children. At fourteen she began working as a domestic in a private minister's home for no wages. Her first paid job was as a domestic at Northfield Infectious Diseases Hospital. In her late teens Doris returned to her people, married and had children. She found her cultural Ngarrindjeri heritage and her voice as a advocate for the stolen generation.

Doris Kartinyeri is well known in public circles. The book includes reproductions of photographic and textual documents.
