Laura Cardinal, a detective with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, is called to a crime scene in the town of Bisbee. The body of a teenage girl has been discovered-bearing all the signs of a serial sexual predator, and calling to mind the murder of Laura's schoolmate 18 years earlier.

Too Slow Paced and Convoluted.......2007-02-05
I read a lot of thrillers, and I really didn't enjoy DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN that much. It's too slow paced and convoluted to be an effective suspense novel.
J. Carson Black is a good writer, but she needs to tighten and streamline her plots better. This novel was drawn out and featured too many characters who were difficult to keep track of. It didn't help that the main character is a rather bland heroine, lacking both humor and personality. In the end, I found this to be a rather tedious read.
I was also disappointed by the ending of DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN, which really came out of left field. It basically involves taking a character who was perfectly normal for the first ninety-five percent of the novel and making him a psychopath for the last five percent. I was very unhappy about this abrupt transformation, which had no foreshadowing whatsoever. I also didn't find the motives for his crimes to be believable or satisfying.
I think Black definitely has writing talent, but I would like to see her apply her talent to a much tighter storyline that actually makes some sense. My advice is to skip this book.
J. Carson-Black Weaves An Excellent Tangled Web.......2006-07-31
Parents do you know where your children are? Once we were rest assured our children and
teens were safe because they were home by curfew. They knew not to talk to strangers, and
to look both ways before crossing the street. That was pre-internet. Now our children meet
those strangers in their bedrooms, the family den, in the well lit and populated public libraries.
We have given predators the key to come into our homes, and all our good intentions are
countermanded by those we seek to protect.
Laura Cardinal, homicide detective for the Arizona Department of Public Safety, is not newcomer
to the murder and mayhem that walks our streets and drive our highways. But this case will
take her back into the pain of her own past as she hunts a pedophile that stalks Internet
chat rooms ever in search of his next victim. Caught in the middle of department politics and
Saddled with a pretty boy partner, Cardinal takes us step by step through her investigation in Bisbee, Arizona to the Florida panhandle and back again, even to the gates of hell to bring a deadly predator down.
J. Carson - Black weaves a deceptively simple tale of deceit, death, and cunning, tinged with
a maniacal madman's belief that he is beyond the hand of the law. Walking step by step through
Cardinal's investigation you will untangle an intelligently crafted plot in the deserts of Arizona
that will leave you wanting more from J. Carson - Black's pen.
Terrific Writing, Great Characters, 4+ Stars.......2006-06-18
For a debut novel, this book exceeded expectations! I wonder if they tried for that First Novel Edgar? It was certainly good enough.
First, the writing itself was excellent. The dialog was natural, which isn't always the case (some very popular mystery authors write dialog that is hideous), and I didn't stumble over any awkward paragraphs. There were even a few laugh-out-loud passages. Ms. Black is a clever lady and clever enough not to use her book to show off, either.
Second, the characters were all well-drawn and interesting. Laura, the protagonist, was especially compelling. I liked her, warts and all.
Third, the plot was exciting. It IS a page-turner.
As to the criticisms some have posted...
There were a couple of coincidences that did activate my willing-suspension-of-disbelief gene but I didn't much care. I've had stranger ones happen in my own life.
There were a lot of characters. This mattered at first when I was trying to read it a little bit at a time (I kept forgetting who the people were by the time I ran into them again), but when I finally gave the book the day it deserved, there was no trouble at all keeping them all straight. As I said before, they are well-drawn.
I'm going to go get the next book right away--what better compliment is there than that?
it collapsed.......2006-02-24
I admit it: I bought this book because the cover was so awesome, and because I like dark, gritty police thrillers. I was jazzed when I dived into this book and found myself on a very realistic and gritty crime scene. I was thrilled to meet a new female cop who seemed to have some substance (in spite of the kind of bizarre opening that has her talking to the ghost of her dead mentor...too awkward and weird).
But except for this initial crime scene, there really was no interesting forensic details or procedural details, nothing that stood out as the writer having done any kind of real research, and certainly nothing that really hooked you.
The rest of the book is rather flat, leading Black's Laura Cardinal through a rather mundane investigation, involving far too many suspects and characters to possibly keep them all straight, so that when you DO find out who the killer is, well, honestly, I almost didn't care because I'd lost track of who the person really was.
I kept waiting for something else to happen....another murder, another crime scene, SOME action....but alas, the plot simply disintegrated. I'm still debating picking up Black's next novel, forgiving her this one as it being her first.
Almost.......2005-12-03
4/5 of the way thru, the plot collapses under the weight of coincidence and implausibility. Up to that point, not a bad effort. But that last fifth was painful.

No matter how many self-help books we read, workshops we attend, spiritual endeavors we pursue; no matter how often we cuddle our inner child or redesign our outer adult, many people keep returning to a gnawing angst and vague unhappiness, according to T. Byram Karasu, author of The Art of Serenity. One of the problems is that many of us define happiness in paradisiacal, childish terms, causing us to feel like we're missing out. "Happiness in adulthood, however, requires realism, reciprocity, and coming to terms with one's mortality," he writes. And, of course, it requires us to cultivate the art of serenity.
Like M. Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled, Karasu brings a psychological background to the area of spiritual growth. (Karasu is the chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, as well as the editor in chief of the American Journal of Psychotherapy.) Sometimes blending spirituality and psychology muddies the waters, but Karasu has a solid understanding of how the two worlds intersect and has created an outstanding and completely accessible guide to lasting inner happiness. The door of joyful serenity can only be opened by a "combination key involving both soul and spirit," he explains. And it all culminates in the love of God. Using real-life cases from his psychotherapy practice, Karasu illustrates how the principles of soul work and spirit work are applied to daily lives. From lovers' jealousy to workplace angst, from friendships to solitude, Karasu offers original, lasting advice and insights. Read this one and put it on your shelf by your other spiritual classics--it's sure to be a lifetime companion. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
We all face adversity, both man-made and natural. How do we survive the loss of a loved one, a betrayal, illness, even impending death, and still find meaning in our lives? Even a "normal" life can seem empty, in spite of material possessions, success, power, and pleasure. In our search for fulfillment and meaning, we work through our past and present conflicts, cuddle our inner child, and redesign our outer adult. We attend workshops on life and secular spirituality and explore the comforts of traditional religion. We get married and divorced, experiment with drugs and alcohol, change jobs. And while our restlessness and unease may abate temporarily, the hollow feeling that there is something missing always returns.
In his profound and accessible work, The Art of Serenity: The Path to a Joyful Life in the Best and Worst of Times, Dr. T. Byram Karasu offers us the key to an extraordinary state of mind -- authentic, soulful happiness -- in the face of everything our life has to offer and take away. The door to this state of mind is opened by a combination of soul and spirit. It involves the soul through the love of others, love of work, and the love of community. It involves the spirit through belief in the sacred and belief in transformation. It culminates in the love of and belief in God. Brilliantly synthesizing psychology and spirituality, Dr. Karasu will guide you to explore the deepest yearnings of your heart.
There is no end to the journey to real happiness; there is no best place to start or best time to begin. So where and when to start? Start here, where you are, and start now.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful quotes and content, but very fragmented writing.......2007-09-18
I was very much looking forward to reading this book. It even started off very well. There were wonderful quotes from other authors, references to mythological tales, a couple named Joe and Lisa that suffered many problems but were a perfect example of people like us.
Then I began to realize that the book was disjointed. These little tidbits were everywhere, and often popped up out of nowhere, breaking the flow. There would be a heading in a chapter, but Karasu wouldn't elaborate on it. Paragraphs didn't flow. The ideas jumped around. There was no cohesive wholeness. The reason this is so disappointing is because he picked out many wonderful quotes and does seem to have very insightful, important messages for his readers. But they aren't well presented.
Karasu is too absolute at times. For instance, he says that the only way to forgive is to forget. Period. No arguments, not too much discussion. But isn't an individual irresponsible and setting him/herself up for failure by simply forgetting. I don't want to harp on this, because this example isn't my point. My point is that he states his ideas too absolutely.
I am a Christian who is soul searching, and I thought this book would help. It did not. But that doesn't mean it won't help others. If you are looking to read a little at a time, and feel good about some stories and about some tidbits and quotes you pick up each time, this may be perfect for you. But if you want a solid flow, and to dive deep into these topics, you may want to look elsewhere.
A Breakthrough in Spirituality Requires a Backward Leap To Faith - Believing And Loving God .......2006-08-20
How do we live life with all its "twists and turns" to find meaning and happiness? T. Byram Karasu in his extraordinary book, "The Art of Serenity", takes us on a journey to find the answer. Karasu, presently Silverman Professor and the University Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Montefiore Medical Center, serves as an excellent guide in finding the answer.
Karasu begins with the premise that we are born with the knowledge of God and are innately spiritual beings, making the cultivation of our spiritual side critical to achieving serenity. "Be a grown-up, soulful, and spiritual person...The first-step is growing up. If you have not, you cannot cultivate your soul and spirit, and will be chronically susceptible to unhappiness."
Breakthroughs in spirituality can only be made possible by a backward leap, returning to faith, that is believing and loving God. This return to faith leads us to the love of self, the love of others, the love of work, and the love of belonging - all critical to finding meaning, fulfillment, and happiness in all aspects of life.
"The Art of Serenity" is told in three parts - "The Way of the Soul" (why love makes a difference); "The Way of the Spirit" (why belief is critical to our transformation); and "The Way of God" (why religion is the natural ground of spirituality). This content-filled book can be digested by everyone, but will be most appreciated by those who have taken the first step, growing up. "Art" will not be a quick read as you will want take your time, absorbing and reflecting on its richness.
We are spiritual beings on a human path on a pilgrimage for meaning, fulfillment and wholeness. Karasu's "The Art of Serenity is a great guidebook, with all the landmarks and detours well marked.
Rare And Precious Wisdom.......2003-02-17
T. Byram Karasu, a respected teacher and author in the field of psychiatry, has ventured far beyond his field in this masterpiece of spiritual wisdom. Clearly he has been doing more than seeing patients all these years, he has been reading assiduously, absorbing the wisdom of the ages. Now, in The Art of Serenity, he distills this wisdom and his own expereinces, for all of us who are willing to taste.
It is not light reading. Karasu deals with the deep questions of life. He begins with love, work, belonging, moves on to the spiritual journey, the nature of self, the acceptance of aging, and the understanding of death. His concluding chapters, dealing with God, and bringing spirituality back home to its ground in religion, are like soaring towers, straining toward the light. The final section left me stunned, wanting to go back and read the book again.
The author uses clinical vignettes, folk-tales, bits of poetry, the Bible, the Quran, and many other works. His writing is fluid and graceful, with a kindly sense of humor. He says little about himself, putting himself into the background, and so his presence is powerfully felt--a man of learning, integrity, wisdom and care for others.
This book, I'm afraid, is not for everyone. It does not promote (or denounce) any single religion. It is not for the narrow-minded. And, I think, it is not for the young. It is a book for those who have some maturity and life experience. For those who are ready it will be a life-changing masterpiece. Thank you, Dr. Karasu. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber
Well-titled!.......2003-02-09
"The Art of Serenity" is RIGHT! This book is incredible in that it really brings you directly into the glaring face of serenity--and then serenity doesn't break eye contact!! People always say: "Do not judge a book by its cover" but I'm going to have to plead the opposite in this case. The cover of this book gives you a perfect idea of the calm nothingness that awaits inside.
Take serene and multiply it times 25! THAT'S HOW SERENE YOU WILL FEEL AS YOU READ THROUGH PAGE AFTER PAGE OF "The Art of Serenity." It is the literary equivalent of a handful of sleeping pills, and I mean that in the most positive, relaxing way. In closing, I would like to assert (serenely) that if I hadn't read this 5-star book, I would never have been able to pin down what "happiness" is. I wouldn't have known that BEFORE I can love someone I have to love MYSELF...
The price of this book is absolutely ridiculous for what you get:
total self-comprehension.
Nurturing, reassuring, and hopeful.......2003-02-08
This book doesn't leave a stone unturned in finding all paths from all backgrounds and all schools of thought in our eternal search for inner peace and happiness. Great book. Also recommended, The Little Guide To Happiness. Another book that brings us closer to the prize.

Centered Riding.......2002-08-16
This book was very helpful to me in terms of developing an attitude and approach towards my riding. Not only were the technical aspects of riding covered, the mindset that allows one to gain confidence and control was addressed at length. As a high-beginner rider I found the information in this book very useful for taking the next step, into intermediate riding skills.
Very useful.......2002-04-08
I am an absolute beginner in horseback riding and I have really appreciated the attention that the Mrs.Hill gives to the mental side of riding.(maybe due to the fact that I am not so young even if I started riding only some months ago...)
It's very useful to see and understand that beyond your posture in saddle ,also your mind approach is important to get the best from the equestrian activities.
My personal target in equestrian sports is to have relaxed riding and in this book you may find important suggestions in starting with a relaxed (but not careless) approach to the horse, to the grooming, to the riding etc... having the best , avoiding to transform a anti-stress activity in full-of-doubts-and anxious-one.
This doesn't mean that also worrying features (like injuries) are not considered: on the contrary there are many parts treating about the potential dangers in riding, the wrong approach to the horse, the best way to ride safely .
...To be prepared is the best defence and gives you a stronger and safer confidence when you're going to ride...
I strongly recommend this book to the beginner-riders who are searching for a good source of suggestions to prepare "their souls" to face without worries and approach with self confidence the"obstacles" in riding horseback.
A book for the novice rider.......2001-02-21
I have read quite a bit of Ms. Hill's books and have found them very helpful. However, I was a little disappointed in this book. It is geared for a beginner and isn't very useful for the more experienced rider who needs improvement. She had a few useful points here and there but I felt like I was reading a motivational and/or human anatomy book. I would recommend Swift's Centered Riding as a wonderful source instead.
I am so glad I got this book as a gift.......2000-12-21
As a beginning adult rider I really appreciated the value I got with this book. I wanted to make the most of my weekly riding lessons and I feel I really already learned so much from this book. I got it as a gift from my husband but, if you buy it it is definitely worth the money. It prepares me for my lessons and also clarifies things very well. The most astonishing thing about this book is how it addresses every issue in a way that can improve skills and understanding for everybody- Beginner and Advanced, Western and English,etc.). It is very easy to read and understand. I really like Hill's writing style and will try out some of her other books.
A very, very good resource.......2000-07-27
This was one of the first books I purchased for my riding library five years ago; at age 33 I was a rank beginner just starting lessons, and I wanted to supplement the physical experience with some off-the-horse studying. Today it's pretty dog-eared, which reflects how often I've gone back to it. It covers just about every aspect of riding one can think of(the aids, body awareness, feel, creative imagery to help position, psychology-even proper attire and tack!), and is written clearly and concisely, never getting dull or overly technical(wish I could say the same for some of the others I've shelled out for). It is also very reasonably priced-a good "value for money", as the british say, which is why I've rated it so highly. I would give it as a gift to any novice, adult or otherwise.

Customer Reviews:
A great value filled with wonderful art.......1999-07-13
This book presents the work of 14 artists who were prolific in the calendar illustration field during 1900-1960. Information on the major calendar companies and production methods is provided as background. For each artist there is a detailed biography, 2 or more full page color illustrations & several pages of smaller b/w illustrations. This is a wonderful look at the art that was part of most households in the first half of the century. Women are by far the most popular subject matter here, including stylish ladies, mothers, Indian maidens & alluring but tasteful pin-ups. The work of Rolf Armstrong, the "Father of the Pin-up" is most notable here. Other subjects include animals, landscapes, western & historical scenes. For collectors, value and market information is provided for this increasingly popular field. This is a wonderful look at a beautiful and vibrant body of art driven by popular demand.

Great Photography.......2007-03-11
But, I wanted to know more about specifics that take place in the Disney's horticultural arena. Also, why talk about the oldest specimen on property (a yucca in the Mexico pavilion over 250 years old) and then not have a photograph. I am a serious gardener and an avid Disney fan. As an annual passholder I travel down to Walt Disney World 4-6 times a year. As much for their gardens as anything else. I was really hoping for more in depth knowledge of horticulture at Disney. A lot of information in the book is very basic. If you love Disney and love plants then I would still recommend this book for your collection. Just be prepared that you are not going to receive the "inside look" that I anticipated.
Awesome Photography.......2007-02-17
As a Disney-holic I can never get enough information on DisneyWorld. This book is beautifully laid out with awesome pictures and great information, even for someone like me who "kills" silk! Great book!
You must have a garden or half of the fun is lost.......2007-01-03
This is quite a nice book to have, but it's not a must-have unless you are fond on gardening and/or would love to have or have a garden. Pics are very nice, but if you're looking for new pictures with unusual points of view, you may find yourself a little disappointed.
Disney Secrets Still Secret.......2006-07-14
I was very excited when I received this book; however, the excitement was short lived. The information in the book is very basic. For example, the book devotes two pages to explaining the USDA zones and another two on how to plant a tree. About the only secret was the directions for making the floating planters from Epcot and since I don't have a pond they were interesting, but not too useful.
Also, the pictures were beautiful, but I wished that the plants in the photos and the locations had been identified. It devotes four pages to the Haunted Mansion gardens, but then doesn't identify the variety of the Haunted Mansion's prolific red roses.
Many of the photos were taken at the 2005 Epcot flower show and I enjoyed reliving the experience through the photos.
If you go to WDW and are amazed at the gardens and have no idea how they do it, then this book would be useful. If,however, you have a good basic idea about how the gardens are created and maintained, then you will not discover many secrets with this book.
Worth the wait!.......2006-07-03
After many delays, this book finally arrives in glorious hardcover format. If you've ever been to a Disney park, you'll appreciate that a lot of effort has gone into making it bright and beautiful and green all the year 'round. This book is far more than just a collection of photos showcasing these gardens, although it does serve that function in part, but it is really more of a gardening guide for the reader. It isn't quite like your traditional garden book either, but it does provide handy hints as to how to make your own potting mix, when the right time to plant is and so forth.
After a brief introduction about the history of the parks, the book goes on to cover specific topics such as building an entry arbor; selecting the right plants for your region; planting a productive potting garden; and getting the right colour/border mixture. From there, a great section entitled 'Setting the Mood' examine the ways in which you can re-create the 'feel' of a Haunted Mansion through to Tomorrowland by choosing the right plants and arranging them. The 'International Flora' section concentrates largely on the World Showcase at the Walt Disney Resort in Florida, while the final section, enticingly titled 'Trade Secrets', examines how they make those topiary animals and floral portraits, such as the one at the Main Entrance of Disneyland. Maybe one day your garden will look as good as Disney's - of course, I'd be nice to have the land and money they have too.
Probably for serious Disney Park enthusiasts only, and those that have an eye for gardening. To be honest, I just enjoy looking at the pictures.

Book Description
"Black-Jewish relations--at the symbolic level--are in shambles," writes Cornel West. One has only to recall the 1991 Crown Heights tragedy and its aftermath to recognize to what extent Black-Jewish relations have deteriorated. The emergence of frequently anti-Semitic black demagogues like Louis Farrakhan and Leonard Jeffries and the Jewish community's turn to neo-conservatism have only made matters worse. Mistrust, ambivalence, and other negative feelings characterize much of Black-Jewish relations. Unlike most books on this topic which are written from a sociocultural, historical, and literary perspective, this anthology looks at the psychological motives, beliefs, and desires that impair relations between the two groups. For example, unresolved vulnerabilities in respective communities from the Holocaust and slavery remain driving and complex passions that still disrupt Black-Jewish relations. Psychoanalysis is a powerful conceptual tool to untangle these issues and other aspects of the larger societal race-relations problem.
