I'm Hooked!.......2007-03-20
Dead Hot Mama is set in a small town in Wisconsin in the middle of winter. Retired dentist Doc Osborne and his fishing buddy/girlfriend Police Chief Lew Ferris keep having their holiday celebrations interrupted by the unusual number of dead bodies that keep turning up in their neck of the woods. Initially, Doc Osborne gets involved to handle the forensic dental exams on the bodies, but as staff shortages, small town politics, and winter storms complicate investigations into the murders, Osborne, his family, and even his wacky neighbor Ray all get pulled into the tangled investigations.
And in between investigating these crimes, they manage to carve out a little time for fishing. There is a surprising amount of information in this book about fishing. And while I am not big fan of fishing, this aspect of the book is both interesting and enjoyable. It is also seamlessly incorporated into the book - this is one of those books that the reader is just sucked into and completely immersed in.
Cozy readers beware - this book has a high body count and some icky bits. But if you can take a little ick, it is a great read. And I won't give it away, but there is one plot line in this book that will have you running to the internet to do some research of your own. If you aren't running outside with your fishing pole, that is.
Did I guess it? Yes. Will I read another? Absolutely, Houston is up near the top of my list.
Best Yet, But . . ........2006-01-16
This is the fifth in the Loon Lake Fishing series. In this outing, Christmas is approaching as is a storm sure to dump several inches, if not feet, of snow on Loon Lake. Doc Osborne and Chief Ferris are looking forward to some down time only to be called out to one of Osborne's neighbor's home to investigate what looks like murder.
This entry in the series is by far the most complicated. What looks like a "simple" murder soon becomes much, much more - the harvesting of bodies for parts and tissues. The relationship between Osborne and Ferris does not advance in this book, but does not retreat either.
The one issue I had with this book was that the ending seemed very rushed. I can say no more without giving away too much of the ending, but suffice it to say Houston gave up a potentially nail-biting, page-turning ending to speed to the end of the book by tying up loose ends in short stilted paragraphs.
Great book.......2005-12-09
This was the first book of Victoria Houston's that I have read and I thought it was great. It was funny and suspenseful. Even though I picked out who was behind everything kind of early in the book, it was still great. I like at the end how everything was tied up in a neat little bow. I highly recommend this book.
Best one yet!.......2004-11-01
I've read all of Vicky's books and I like them all. I've gotten to know Doc, Lew and Ray pretty well. I also am very familar with the Northern Wisconsin area she writes about. My Grandpa lived in Manitowish for 30 years and I spent alot of time up there. She takes me back there in every book. She knows and has seen the places I've seen too. Probably fished the same waters as well. Love the books, this is a very good one. Read them all if you can.
Best yet in the series..........2004-07-13
I thoroughly enjoyed "Dead Hot Mama" and the entire series. The characters continue to grow and evolve, the plotting is tight and twisted. Being from Wisconsin, I especially enjoy the Northwoods backdrop and localisms. Don't let the fishing theme scare you off from reading this series. I fished every summer with my Grandpa and all I ever caught was a cold, but I still LOVE this series and can't wait for the next installment!!!

Classic D&D Novel........2006-01-05
To me this is THE classic Dungeons and Dragons novel. The Penhaligon Trilogy was my first exposure to D&D books, and after reading dozens and dozens of Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms novels etc. since, nothing has yet to come close to this.
Great story of an exiled fallen hero who attempts to save face by saving the people who have shunned him. Throw this in with love,an epic battle with a dragon, and an unsuspected ending and youve got yourself a classic. Although these themes may sound typical, this book and the following two ( The Dragons Tomb and The Fall of Magic) are not, they are great!
A Timeless Epic.......2004-08-07
This book is one of few that clearly defines what i have always been looking for in fantasy novels. The author paints a vivid world where the reader can lose themselves and completely identify with the suprisingly lifelike characters. Each character has a unique personality and sucessfully evokes true human emotion. Anger, sadness, lust, bravery, honor, and guilt paint the pages of this tragic yet beautiful work of art. It is so rare that a story can display such emotion and beauty, which makes this novel all the more genuine.
The rise and fall of Fain Flinn.......2002-01-07
The Tainted Sword is, as I'm sure you've gussed, a fantasy. There isnt a definable main character, but the story focuses on two people in particular above the rest. These two are Flinn and his Squire-to-be/lover-to-be,Johauna Menhir. Flinn is a knight who has fallen from grace in his court. The book never really explains why so many people support his fall, seeing as he has saved the land multiple times, but he is constently tormented by everyone he sees.He adpots an very mean spirit and refuses to talk to anyone he sees. Finally someone gets through his rough deamanor and sees the goodness in him. That someone is Johanua Menhir. A really nicely written relationship between them begins and is even delayed at one point where the author could let it all come together between them. Flinn evetually reagins his titles and his honor and heads out back inot the world to destroy his sworn enemy who has been ravaging the world, the dragon Verdilith. The final encounter between then is very intense and the end is totally different from what I would expect from a book with 2 sequels. This is a very well writen novel, that expresses a lot of human emtion and has vey believable characters. I would highly recommend it.
An engaging story line with great twists and character depth.......1999-02-17
I've bought this book when I was in forth grade, and I'm still reading it in tenth. It would be impossible to sum up the greatness of this book in just a simple paragraph, but to generally put it... The characters each had a unique personality, which the author has done well to describe them.
The storyline is unpredictable, and leaves you wanting more. In a matter of fact, I would love to see this trilogy be extended to a 4 or 5 book series.
This book also arises many different emotions throughout the book.... happiness, fright, anger, sadness, depression, abandonment... All to a great extent.
This novel combines romance, action, and magic into one great novel that you would surely want to read.
Contains all the stuff that makes Dungeon and Drangons great.......1999-01-29
This book was filled with everything, romance, magic and swordplay. Also they end the book with a great cliffhanger that leaves the reader wanting to go out and read the next book.

Book Description
They happen to skiers. They happen to cyclists. They happen to basketball players and joggers and football players. They even happen to people out for a simple walk. They are knee injuries, and in 2003, Americans will suffer more than 8 million tears, fractures, and sprains. Many of those patients will eventually develop chronic problems, joining the 30 million Americans whose knees hurt for the duration of their life. Written by leading sports medicine doctor Brian Halpern, The Knee Crisis Handbook will prove especially essential to athletes, who will appreciate sections on individual sports and the knee risks associated with each. But anyone can benefit from The Knee Crisis Handbook's, chapters on preventing injury, maximizing workout results while protecting the knees, and treating a recent break or tear, even without surgery. Co-authored by leading arthroscopic surgeon Dr. David Altchek, and strength-training expert Marty Jaramillo, The Knee Crisis Handbook is the last word on knee injury.
Customer Reviews:
Covers it ALL!!!.......2007-07-31
This has everything - surgery, sports, special knee exercises, how to determine your risk, tests the docs will do, and more. How to reduce your risk, risky sports & what to do if you still want to play. Also tells you when you shouldn't play. Special attention to women's higher risk of knee injury, why it occurs, and what to do... I am using the exercises to strengthen my knees. Exercises well organized & very detailed. General knee health routine, stretching routine, ACL injury routine, balance exercises, weight bearing exercises (& don't need any fancy equipment either - just a small ball or yoga block!) Have already recommended it to 2 other knee injured people.
Hope for hopeless knees.......2007-07-24
This book is amazing! I've been suffering with knee problems for 30+ years and have seen many specialists, but never have I understood the knee, its mechanics and its problems the way I do now. I have purchased a copy of this book for everyone I know who suffers with bad knees- from sports, injuries, arthritis, etc. Written in enjoyable prose, Halpern explains the way the knee is constructed along with its inherent problems given that we force it to operate in ways it was never designed to move and that we don't pay enough attention to medial healing. The strength and flexibility-building exercises are superb, and include everything I've ever done in (expensive) physical therapy and more. Everyone! should have this book!
Great Especially If You're Considering Surgery.......2007-03-10
I'm planning on ACL surgery in two weeks and I picked up several books yesterday. This is the most useful of the three. The Chapter on Preparing for Surgery is very good. It provides questions you might want to discuss with the doctor, what to expect and things to do ahead of time to prepare (lay in a stock of your favorite food, duct tape and hefty bags to waterproof . I would never have thought about half of these things, and they make a lot of sense! And there's a section on how to use crutches, which those of us who have been healthy until now have never had to think about. For me, these were worth the price of the book.
Good informaion.......2007-02-12
I have knee injuries and arthritis as a result. I am always looking for ways to understand my limitations and work with what I've got. This book is very helpful.
You "Kneed" This Book.......2006-03-27
Corny review title, I know. But if I only knew ten years ago (five years, one year) what I know now...what I know now because of this book.
Dr. Brian Halpern of the "Hospital for Special Surgery" in New York has written a thorough and highly readable primer on caring for the knee. There is a knee crisis in the United States...and I am sadly one of the recent casualties.
With sections entitled "The Knee," "Preventing Knee Injury," "Getting Better" and "Groups with Special Concerns," you have all the information you need to prevent, diagnose, know whether it's time to go to the emergency room, prepare for surgery, find a physical therapist and participate wholeheartedly. There is also a chapter about "Complementary Medicine," discussing acupuncture, vitamins, herbal supplements and massage.
I read it in a night, but will refer to it for years to come...whether I have surgery or not. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
In 1956, Miles Davis's legendary quintet went into the studio for a series of marathon recording sessions. The resulting albums, including Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet, are among the most influential in the jazz canon. Just over 30 years later, chef Charlie Trotter began staging his own nightly sessions, bringing the art of improvisation into the kitchen of his Chicago restaurant. Trotter continues to take inspiration from the jazz greats, using his mastery of tastes and textures to fashion brilliant, daring culinary compositions out of an ensemble of the finest ingredients.
Trotter's award-winning PBS cooking show, The Kitchen Sessions, first presented the chef's artistry to home cooks around the country, and now he's back with a new 26-part series. In the companion volume, Trotter presents more than 80 recipes, arranged by ingredient themes that are fundamental to his cooking. Trotter sounds off the bass notes of root vegetables and squash in such dishes as Salsify Wrapped with Serrano Ham and Phyllo with Pears and Roasted Endive, and Zucchini and Duck Confit Gratin with Hazelnut Vinaigrette. He celebrates the summer bounty of corn and tomatoes through Halibut with Red Wine-Corn Sauce and Grits, and Tomato Tarts with White Anchovies and Caper Vinaigrette. For the last course, Trotter puts the spotlight on cheese desserts such as Honey Mascarpone Cannoli with Pine Nuts and Mint, and then presents a generous selection of chocolate- and fruit-based desserts. Workin' captures one of the world's most innovative chefs at the top of his form. Never have the results been more beautiful to behold and accessible to the avid home cook.
Customer Reviews:
Charlie Trotter book covering TV series & some.......2007-03-22
Reasonably easy recipes to make, ingredients can be easily located. Wine notes are an added bonus
Cooking outside of the box; a great read and fabulous food.......2005-06-28
I've been reading and cooking from this book for a couple of weeks now, and thrilling myself (and my resident taste-tester spouse) with the results. I've learned something new from every recipe, and it has helped loosen up my own creative cooking juices and get me out of the "old standby" rut. Trotter takes standard techniques and turns them on their head. "Leek confit" soup swims around oil-poached salmon, and a Thai-style curry sauce takes on a new meaning when it is used in a braise of short ribs and served over herby, crusty roasted root vegetables. No, this cookbook is not for someone looking to whip up a meal in 20 minutes or less with what they have in the fridge. But there are lots of other cookbooks for that. These recipes are challenging but very doable for anyone who has a good foundation in cooking, access to quality ingredients, and who is eager to spend some time in the kitchen. All of the dishes I've tried have rated high on the "wow" scale. I look forward to learning new riffs on old standards from this masterful chef.
Interesting in concept, difficult in reality.......2005-01-09
I am an avid cook and know how to follow a recipe. I made Artichoke & Tomato Turnover with Herb Puree. After hours of chopping, simmering, making & rolling dough, etc, the results were inedible. The cream cheese dough was made is cream cheese, butter and flour; part of the butter melted out when it was baked. I can't imagine drizzling olive oil with herbs and romano cheese on top as the recipe directs. I later calculated that the recipe was 4000 calories for 4 servings. Trotter's "Cooks at Home" or Keller's "Bouchon" are better and more practical if you actually plan to make the recipes.
Great Dishes. Great Inspiration. Small Practical Value.......2004-12-07
`Workin' More Kitchen Sessions With Charlie Trotter' is based on Charlie Trotter's latest PBS series where, according to Trotter `friend and colleague' Rochelle Smith, Trotter imitates Jazz greats by improvising savory dishes based on twelve (12) central ingredients, plus a series on desserts. Like so many celebrity chef cookbooks, the chef whose name is on the cover generally provides the ideas and may actually create the dishes in the kitchen, but it is the support team which actually writes the recipes, edits copy, tests, the recipes, and does just about every other activity involved in creating a book. As Trotter himself prepared these recipes on TV, we can be certain that he certainly had a lot to do with actually coming up with the recipes, so his creative contribution to the book is assured.
Trotter is easily one of the most creative and influential writing chefs in the country, along with Thomas Keller, Alfred Portale, Daniel Boulud, and Tom Colicchio. Unlike culinary businessmen such as Wolfgang Puck and trendsetter restaurateurs such as Alice Waters, these chefs create new cuisine and explain to all of us less talented what it is really like to be a creative chef in a fine dining establishment. With all of that, why am I so disappointed with this book?
For starters, it is important for me to say that I am convinced that virtually all the recipes in this book are about as original as they come and I am sure that they are about as tasty as the finest ingredients and the best culinary minds and hands can make them. There is not a single conventional spaghetti, paella, risotto, roasted chicken, crepe, omelet, Panini, or crostini recipe in the book. Virtually the only recognized name dish in the book is a cassoulet, but this is done in a very unconventional way. There are some soufflés and a paella inspired recipe here and there but nothing you will find in Tony Bourdain's excellent send off of bistro dishes. Thus, like John Coltrane's famous renditions of `My Favorite Things', these dishes simply have never been seen before, and it is quite possible Trotter will never make them again.
Here lies the germ of the problem. If these dishes are one off improvisations by a world class chef, what in the world give us any assurance that these dishes have any value whatsoever to the practical home cook? The problem is compounded by a few very pedestrian problems with the design of the book. For starters, the headnotes to each dish are in a small type with a very light ink. It was literally difficult for me to read these paragraphs. Second, the very imaginative organization of the recipes by a principle ingredient was largely meaningless, as almost every dish could have been made a set piece for any one of half a dozen ingredients. My favorite example is a truly fantastic looking dish made of a lamb tenderloin with a peanut sauce, ginger, scallions, onion, carrot, parsnip, bell peppers, and so on, with a touch of mizuna, tatsoi, and basil. If I were looking for something to do with a head of frisee or romaine or Boston lettuce and I was paging through the section on greens, this recipe would do absolutely nothing for me. Third, while the photographs of the completed dishes were as good or better than I've seen in most books, the `atmosphere' snaps were done in a very dark green shade where one's eyesight would have to be a lot better than mine to make the effort to appreciate what Herr Trotter was doing when the picture was taken. Fourth, this is obviously a book meant more for the coffee table than for laying open on the kitchen table. This may not be a serious complaint, as Thomas Keller has given us an even larger `Bouchon'; however, Keller's book is literally packed with familiar recipes which virtually all of us can reproduce to good effect. Trotter's book has no such recipes. Fifth, I think the author(s) really short-changed us in the pantry recipes. I am very suspicious of the stock recipes as their procedures are very short and they instruct us to chop vegetables and simmer these for up to six hours. Virtually every other expert I have seen puts whole or simply peeled and halved vegetables in a stock pot and simmers vegetables from one to three hours. I think Trotter's stock recipes in the hands of an amateur who does not have $100 chinois strainers on hand are recipes for very cloudy stocks.
Some of the clues that tell me that these are not recipes for mere mortals are the instructions to do a brunoise dice of seeded tomatoes. According to my trusty Larousse Gastronomique, a brunoise is a `minute dice'; generally giving cubes an eighth of an inch on a side. I challenge you to successfully brunoise the flesh of a tomato! A second case is when the instructions ask you to do a chiffonade of onions that have been baked for an hour. Trotter may be able to do this without a lot of thought but I am simply not up to these prep tasks.
These are simply not practical recipes for amateurs. There is a lot of inspiration here and there is a lot of very good use of American ingredients. This is purely a book for professionals and serious foodies. I will come back to this book for inspiration when I have the urge to create a recipe for artichokes, corn, fennel, greens, legumes, mushrooms, onions, potatoes, root vegetables, squash, tomatoes, or cheese, but I will pass on it when I want to do my next 100 family meals.
Like Trotter's book `Raw', I give this three stars not for the lack of great culinary skill behind the recipes but as a warning to look twice before laying out $40 for this book. Keller's `Bouchon' is a much better value for the money.
Great Cookbook.......2004-11-28
If you like to cook and like creative dishes. This is the cookbook for you. I love this book. Charlie Trotter creates great tasting, creative combinations. I have yet to make anything in this book that was not fabulous. Good Christmas Gift!

Book Description
The Incredible Ball Point Pen tells the story of the ball point pen's painful development, its cacophonous launching, the public hysteria accompanying its debut, and its outrageous and scandalous promotion. It recounts the fabulous riches which followed, the public's rapid and total disillusionment with the product, the collapse of the market, scientific breakthroughs in the 1950s, the industry's resurrection, myriad improvements occurring from 1950 to 1959, and the modern period from 1960 on. This is the most exhaustive work available on early ball point brands, manufacturers, and models. It includes over 400 photos of pens, copies of original ads, patents, documentation, and a comprehensive spotter and price guide. All who appreciate the ball point pen as a collectible and investment and who wish to further their knowledge about this fascinating topic will certainly want this book.

The Incredible Ball Point Pen.......2001-09-18
As a new pen collector, I thought the pictures in this book were fantastic. I have no basis for the price references, but they seem to be fairly accurate.
An excellent reference book.
Great pen information resource.......2000-12-20
The book is an incredible resource for even the most knowledgeable pen expert. There is a great deal of information out there for the fountain pen collector but not much for others who prefer other writing instruments. This book does a great job of filling this glaring gap.
A special book on a unique topic........1998-08-17
Good. Exelent. Amazing. Brilliant. Perfect. A++++. Great. Pens. I've never seen anything this great!! A real bargain for a good book!
Short but good history and many photographs of pens.......1998-06-27
I was doing a research on the Ball Point Pen and this book was really insightful. It assembles a great deal of articles that have been written on this pen. It gives a good historical analysis from 1889 to 1960 but, on the negetative side, the history is fairly poor after the 1960s.
Furthermore, it has many photographs of old an collectible ball point pens.

BOOK SCOTTS LAWNS ND EDITION
Customer Reviews:
Get the 2nd Editon.......2007-10-10
The book is quite solid, well written & illustrated. No qualms there.
However, Amazon sells both the 1st & 2nd edition for the same price -- but makes no mention of there being a 2nd edition here. This is the FIRST edition, get the second instead. Do a search for "Scotts Lawn".
Also, as someone else mentions, this book (1st ed) is an updated version of the Ortho book on Lawns.
Again, the book is solid, but look for the 2007 2nd edition.
A Great Book on Lawn Care but..........2007-04-19
I was looking for the perfect all in one book but that's really impossible right? Well, this is a really good book but the one thing I think it misses are the "organic" options to things like fertilizers and pest defense. All in all it's a great help but I would have liked to see organic fertilizing options and organic pest control. In any case it will get your lawn green again.
Excited to Start Renovating my Lawn!.......2007-04-16
We bought a brand new house last year with an acre of land and had no idea how to take care of the freshly laid lawn. A year of trial and error and the lawn is covered in weeds and missing patches. I just started reading this book and am already very impressed. It has simple steps and is written so clearly that I, someone who killed a lawn, feel comfortable starting over. If you want an easy to follow book with wonderful hints this is your book. I cannot wait to start fixing our lawn!
Lawn care heaven.......2007-01-10
This is a fantastic book. Better than many that cost much more. My dad reads it, looks at the photos and drawings, and is making plans for the spring.

Excellent practical resource for maintaining your home lawn. I found many good practical applications in this book. I would recommend it for anyone that just wants to use for making sure their home lawn is well maintained.

Attention Tokyo Billionaires - This is the book for you!.......2007-01-16
I feel that this book is mis-categorized and inappropriatley titled. The description alleges that this book will provide "practical advise, the book guides readers through the steps, tricks and techniques needed to create a multitude of lighting atmospheres and unique decorative features for both interior and exterior spaces." This is not at all true. Unless you are a millionaire, Japanese boutique hotel designer, or avant-garde eccentric this book is not for you.
The first section provides examples of lighting schemes that are in no way practical - i.e. fancy built-ins from the homes of the very-well-to-do, a bathroom drenched in harsh neon-red light (I thought bathrooms were supposed to be soothing, not rage-inducing). The next section is basically a list of resumes from lighting design firms that would cost more to hire than the cost of my home.
This is followed by what amounts to a shopping cataolg of extremely over-priced, unavailable lighting pieces.
I was looking for ways to improve the lighting in my home, not by flying over some London-based designer, or spending $8000 on a chandelier the size of my couch. In addition to being inexcusably impractical, the book is poorly edited and produced. There are numerous descriptions for which there are no accompanying photos or illustrations; many descriptions accompany the wrong photo; and in one instance a sentence was cut off right in the middle, no punctutation or completion of thought.
If you cant read, but want to see pretty pictures of expensive stuff, buy this book.
