Book Description

Judith and Renie's dreams of R&R on a deluxe cruise ship are dry–docked when murder occurs at a pre–launch party. But the stabbing death of cruise line owner Magglio Cruz is only the first in a trio of homicides as the cousins prowl the steep streets of San Francisco.

They're in good –– and bad –– company, however. Fellow travelers Rick and Rhoda St. George may be pleasantly plastered, but their eyes aren't blurred to motive, method and mayhem. Along with the ships' Art Deco decor, the St. Georges' breezy 1930's presence (accompanied by their wheezing dog, Asthma) makes Judith and Renie feel as if they're living in a time warp.

Of course the cousins will be lucky to be living at all by the time they sort through the suspects...

1 out of 5 stars Stick a Fork In It.......2006-09-16

I've read this series since the first installment, and unfortunately they keep getting worse.

Renie, who used to be somewhat amusing, keeps getting more and more annoying. Way too much time is spent on stupidity such as her stuffed ape being "kidnapped" and her rabbit dressed in a tutu. Her mouthiness and attitude are also no longer entertaining -- the character has become unbearable. And Judith isn't much better -- people talking to her because she smiles warmly at them has long since gotten ridiculous.

When you run out of feasible reasons for your characters to be involved in murder and the reasons become as convoluted and lame as they have with this series, it's time to stick a fork in it.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Read.......2006-08-18

This was my first Mary Daheim book, I picked it up on a whim.

I was disappointed in the book, in no small part because of the unlikeable characters. After about a quarter of the book was behind me I found myself wondering why I should continue, because the heroines were just as cranky as the supporting cast, and even the cruise ship setting, which had some great promise, lacked sparkle.

Unless you have an interest in reading everything in this particular series, I'd devote my time elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Guys and Dames.......2005-11-19

On a cruise that is not to be, Renie and Judith find, of course, a corpse. The theme of the cruise is 1930's and once everyone disembarks into the wonderful city of San Francisco ( which is well drawn)it seems the theme continues ashore. Part of the mystery is for the reader to discern who the characters represent from past famous mysteries. At times enjoyable, frivolous and - tedious.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and boring.......2005-11-18

I'm a fan of this series and have read them all. After the last installment (This Old Souse)I hoped for a return to Judith and Renie I met in the earlier books, but this book isn't it. The strength of the books for me has always been the skewed take on life these two have, but in this book, they just seemed silly, almost caricactures of their former selves. Like the cruise, the book didn't go anywhere - the two cousins seemed to run around a lot, but getting nowhere, I think since the plot was so weak and the other characters so "cardboard cutout". I miss the focus on Hillside Manor, the family characters (Joe and Gertrude are almost non-existent in this book), and the comfortable atmosphere and the earlier books have. It seems as if the author has run out of ideas and is forcing the humor. I actually found myself skipping parts of the book, impatient with what sometimes seemed like needless diversions or filler. I hope the next book is better, or maybe it's time for this series to end.

4 out of 5 stars Up to their necks again.......2005-09-18

This was a fun read and a fast read because it kept moving. As usual they find murder around every corner and have fun out-witting the local police detectives and keeping their husbands at bay until things are solved.

    3 out of 5 stars i liked it.......2002-07-15

Well, I do NOT play the rpgs, sorry so I can't tell you how this relates to that, but from an outsider's pov this was an interesting foray into another magical world. I don't think one should read this by it's self, rather read this in one sitting with the other two books.

    3 out of 5 stars Mildly disappointing........2000-06-23

The first book of the trilogy of which this book is the second, "The Toybox", did a very good job of being a self-contained story, rather than obviously the first third of a trilogy. So I had hopes that this book would not suffer from "middle-book-itis", as so many second books (or movies) do. Even Tolkein failed in this regard; none of the books of his trilogy can stand alone. In the "Star Wars" movie trilogy (not counting the most recent prequel) the second movie, "The Empire Strikes Back" suffers from this fault. And this book, too, cannot stand on its own.

Still, while it refers back to the events of the first book quite a bit, and doesn't really have a satisfying ending of its own, it does do a better job of at least ending at a reasonably plausible break-point than many middle books of trilogies do, and the writing is still enjoyable (if not quite as much so as in the first book) and the characters are as compelling as ever. Obviously, if you've read the first book and enjoyed it, you should continue with this one. But be forewarned; you won't find an ending here; one could plausibly have read just the first book, stopped there, and not felt cheated. One cannot do that with this book; it will be necessary to continue to the third book of the series.

    Book Description

HYSICAL is the story of a hard-living, happily married, middle-aged American (the author) who gets a three-day executive checkup at the Mayo Clinic and is thereby forced to confront his mortality, not to mention glove-wearing doctors and the pair of dominatrix-esque technicians who supervise his stress test quite strictly. James McManus must understand his revised actuarial odds in the light of his not-so-long-lived forebears and the fact that his youngest children are only six and five years old. He has to survive his own cardiovascular system, inherited habits, and genetic handicaps long enough to see Bea and Grace into adulthood. But with so much at stake, and in spite of his terror of death, he may not have the willpower to follow the Mayo clinicians advice. On a related health front, McManuss twenty-nine-year-old daughter, Bridget, has lived with juvenile diabetes since she was four, and the Bush Administrations opposition to the stem-cell research that could save her life makes him feel like he might have to do something rash. Meanwhile, should he have a vasectomy? Or try for another child, having lost his only son? How much longer will he be able to perform such manly feats without Viagra? Is his grateful wife sleeping with the brilliant opthalmological surgeon who saved their daughters vision? PHYSICAL negotiates the political and medical forks in the labyrinth of our health care system and calls for sanity and enlightenment in the stem-cell research wars. Its a no-holds-barred, wrenching, often hilarious portrait of the looming mortality of a privileged generation that cant believe the partys winding down, if not over.

1 out of 5 stars Deceptive Title. Book is more POLITICAL than Medical.......2007-03-26

I must admit I was curious to read a book that detailed the plight of the middle aged male going in for a physical especially being in health care myself. I was curious to read his oberservations. However, What I got was a liberal political agenda with a smattering of info on actually getting a high dollar Mayo Clinic physical.

The first 1/3 of the book talks about his complete experience at the Mayo Clinic. However, from then on he takes liberty to bash Christians, President Bush, creation, and anything else remotely to the right of moderate.

The author needs to do a better job of researching his facts. He missed the boat on stem cell research as well as evolution. The author repeatedly tries to 'prove' his case or facts by using op ed columns instead of concrete documented research. Real facts are backed up by scientific research not op ed pieces of people who agree with you.

Part of the book includes the author's frustration with the illness' of his kids. He whines repeatedly that they are sick and President Bush and science is keeping his grow kid with diabetes down b/c they won't fund embyro stem cell research. However, the author fails to check or reference the many advances that adult stem cells HAVE ALREADY DONE FOR PEOPLE.

Finally, as a healthcare provider, I look to solve the problems of my patients instead of just treating symptoms, I was not happy with the author's constant quest to find a pill, injection, QUICK FIX to cure all his and his families woes. If we took responsibility for our actions, many healthcare problems would go away.

This book is very light on the physical (in fact part of getting a physical is poked fun at by the author) and heavy on a very left leaning liberal political agenda. (I would not have minded this if the book was well researched and spent more time on the actual physical).

Save your money on this one and if you're remotely curious check it out from the public library.

3 out of 5 stars Repetitive and not all that compelling.......2007-03-01

I wanted to like this book, I really did. I love reading about the art and career of medicine, and this book sounded right up my alley!

But basically all that happened in this book is the author goes for some tests at the Mayo clinic and is surprised to find that his drinking, smoking, and high stress haven't put him in the greatest condition to care for his second, younger family (his children with his second wife are only 5 and 6). There is a bit of interesting information in here about the Mayo clinic, some history of medicine, and general info about certain common diseases and maladies, but nothing so interesting that it made me feel excited about continuing.

Later in the book, he gets on a rant about stem-cell research and how he had hoped that it could help his diabetic daughter live a longer life, but how deeply disappointing it is that the Bush administration won't allow federal funding for this kind of research. I agree with him passionately on this topic, but even my sympathies were tried by the amount of times he returned to that same rant. I think a good editor could have really helped in that regard.

So this book gets a disappointed 3 stars from me. I got some information out of it, but I didn't get any earth-shattering insights from it, and I didn't really find his personal musings about his health all that interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to categorize, but incredibly funny..........2007-01-14

This was an "I need something to read" library pickup, and I wasn't quite sure what to expect... Physical: An American Checkup by James McManus. It's a personal story of a typical middle-aged man facing his mortality and deciding to get "the full physical". Mixed in with his experience, he also spends plenty of time railing against healthcare and the government's stance against stem cell testing. A bit uneven, but incredibly funny when it's clicking...

McManus is a typical guy who is middle-aged, drinks and smokes, but has never really paid much attention to it all. But he starts to think about whether he'll live to see his six and eight year old girls by a second marriage grow up at his current pace. His genetics work against him too, as the men in his family don't fare too well in terms of longevity. He's given the opportunity to take a three day "executive physical" at the Mayo clinic, and he goes into bitingly funny detail on the procedures. The treadmill stress test "dominatrixes" are a riot, and you can just feel how his male ego is taking a beating at the hands of these two ladies. When not discussing his personal physical, he's commenting on the state of healthcare in the United States, as well as the government's refusal to allow stem cell research. He sees it from the point of view of his daughter, a lady in her late 20's with Type 1 diabetes. Stem cell research holds out hope for one day finding a cure for this disease, as well as others, but progress has been handcuffed by the Bush administration. Although there are two sides to every story, I can relate to his frustration as I have a son with the same condition. The possibility of seeing him live without needles and insulin is a dream and wish of mine also.

It's hard to slot this book into just a single genre... It could be comedy if you just focus on the physical. It could also be social commentary if you just focus on the government rants. Depending on where you stand on the stem cell issue, you could end up loving or hating this book. In any case, McManus puts a personal face on many of the health care issues confronting us today, and Physical will probably have you laughing some and thinking a bit all the way through...

4 out of 5 stars Great Writer - But Lacks Focus.......2006-12-28

I have always enjoyed the author's work, and "Physical" is no exception.
However, the only thing missing in this novel was a plot: it was more the daily musings of a middle-aged man, than anything resembling a novel.

His anti-bush rhetoric was enjoyable (surprisingly), a plus for this genre, but, ultimately, his tyraids took away from the subject at hand. Some of his stem-cell-research data was outdated, but he addresses this in the after-word to the paperback edition.

buy this book - but only in paperback.

    3 out of 5 stars Mildly interesting.......2006-08-27

I imagine many readers in the author's age range who pick up this book hoping for new insights into modern health care or tips on obtaining the best physical for their dollars will find nothing new. The author is fortunate to have an employer willing to stand the cost of the workup at Mayo. Although he's happy with the outcome, he'd probably have been able to produce a more interesting piece if he'd had more wrong with him. He turned out to be a fairly typical middle-aged physical specimen who needed to lose a few pounds and get his cholesterol and triglycerides down. And it cost someone about 8,000 dollars to have Mayo's verify this. Unfortunately, most of us can't afford this sort of comprehensive exam (the fact that it's referred to as the "executive" exam suggests the target market), and it's way beyond the level of checkup Medicare will spring for as the annual physical it permits each recipient.

      Book Description

Food safety is a matter of intense public concern, and for good reason. Millions of annual cases of food "poisonings" raise alarm not only about the food served in restaurants and fast-food outlets but also about foods bought in supermarkets. The introduction of genetically modified foods--immediately dubbed "Frankenfoods"--only adds to the general sense of unease. Finally, the events of September 11, 2001, heightened fears by exposing the vulnerability of food and water supplies to attacks by bioterrorists. How concerned should we be about such problems? Who is responsible for preventing them? Who benefits from ignoring them? Who decides?
Marion Nestle, author of the critically acclaimed Food Politics, argues that ensuring safe food involves more than washing hands or cooking food to higher temperatures. It involves politics. When it comes to food safety, billions of dollars are at stake, and industry, government, and consumers collide over issues of values, economics, and political power--and not always in the public interest. Although the debates may appear to be about science, Nestle maintains that they really are about control: Who decides when a food is safe?
She demonstrates how powerful food industries oppose safety regulations, deny accountability, and blame consumers when something goes wrong, and how century-old laws for ensuring food safety no longer protect our food supply. Accessible, informed, and even-handed, Safe Food is for anyone who cares how food is produced and wants to know more about the real issues underlying today's headlines.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Eye opener.......2006-07-10

As a food safety trainer I did not realise the rest of what has and is going on to deliberatly sell us food that is not fit for the purpose all in the interest in profit.

One could have doubted what was written but we have just had the blatent disregard for food safety by 'CADBURY' the famous chocolate people claiming that only minute traces of bacteria may be present.

You either have bacteria or no bacteria there is no halfway house, this book will open everyone's eyes.

5 out of 5 stars An important and well-documented expose.......2005-01-27

This is a well-written book by an author with experience in both the scientific and public affairs aspects of food quality and safety. Marion Nestle makes an effort to describe the complex scientific procedures associated with foodborne disease investigation, and the creation of bioengineered foodstuffs, reasonably clear to the layman / woman. Her message is simple and direct: as far as US government regulatory agencies, and the food industry itself, are concerned, food safety and wholesomeness is regarded as a secondary consideration to corporate profit. Her thesis is supported by a wide and varied list of references, including the scientific literature, print media, and quotes from participants involved in the struggle to make food safety one of the more urgent issues in contemporary public health. "Safe Food" covers such important topics as the outbreaks of E. coli caused by feces-contaminated ground beef; the ineptly regulated release of genetically engineered crops into farm systems and the spread of transgenes into native species; and the farcical (but ultimately tragic) mishandling of the "mad cow" epidemic by a British government blindly devoted to promotion of the beef industry. In each instance, Nestle documents how the food and agrochemical industries conspired to weaken federal oversight of food safety and quality by manipulating politicians and government officials, all in order to maximize profits.
The book is not perfect; some of the sections describing various scientific procedures may have benefited from the inclusion of explanatory diagrams, rather than somewhat belabored text descriptions. But overall, "Safe Food" is an important and timely book, and one well worth reading by anyone concerned about the quality of the food we eat.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-07-27

"Safe Food" is a terrific look at the issues involved in keeping our food supply uncontaminated. It is also a look behind the scenes at how our democracy really works, and it's not a pretty sight. Corporations choosing profits over public health, government representatives more often than not siding with industry rather than consumers, corruption, greed, and ineptitude are all part of this fascinating story. Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars more questions raised about the author's intentions.......2003-06-08

I just heard Marion Nestle on the Mike McConnell raido show. All I could ask myself during the interview was, "What are her intentions in writing this book." All I could think of during the interview was she was another Rachel Carson writing her "Silent Spring".
My general impression was that she wrote this book to create fear in the food consumer, but never really offered any solutions except more government intrusion. She never presented, in the interview, the fault of the consumer in poor preparation practices or lack of control when eating out.
In Nestle's view its either "big" business' fault by being cheapskates or the government's failure by not legislating.
Yes I believe that there needs to be safeguards, but I also believe that regulations can become so excessive that it could become not profitable to produce food products. That is why there should be a certain amount of responsibility by the consumer (i.e. don't eat tuna fish that's been sitting out in the sun for a few hours).
In the interview of besides presenting herself as a prophet of doom, I also found her to be very condescending to people who challenged her opinions.
If you want to read her work, I can only recommend reading this with a very critical eye.

I'm very happily working in a pet profession, I just adore the vet & pet shows on animal planet (from popped out eyeballs, to beloved sick iguanas) , and I am a big sap for animal stories and moving stories of any kind. I guess I expected this to be more stories (happy and sad, but moving), maybe even like chicken-soup style but longer? I was very disappointed. The stories were often short (sometimes 1/2 a sentence) and few between. Lots of vet perspectives on life, and personal vet perspectives on the profession, and worldly views of everything. I was really bored. I kept reading hoping for the next story to come, but I ended up reading skipping more than 1/2 the book because after a while I just couldn't read the quotes from the vets & techs anymore, and the lists of things they teach the other techs, and their years of schooling and personal experiences (educational & interests - not animal stories) was redundant and boring for me. The medical descriptions were not detailed enough to be educational orinteresting, and were too detailed that they distracted from the emotionality of just telling a story. I still have 20 pages to go before I finish, and I can't even remember the last story I was actually moved by (it was somewhere in the first 30 pages. The book is organized by "topic", but it doesn't seem to really have any flow (it went from dogs & cats to much less interesting stories of wildlife & exotics - which are usually very interesting, but they left out all the emotions other than "we eventually had to put it asleep, that was really hard". A few times they didn't even list the end of the story, or what decision the owner made for treatment - I really hate that (what happened to the kangaroos eyen cancer???)!

I'd really like to give this book 2 or 3 stars at least, because they really tried. They talked to may vets, and plopped in tons of quotes and lists of things they "learned" (quoted) from them. But I just feel so disappointed (more every time I try to finish it) that I can't. I've been a lot more moved by the cat behavior books I purchased at the same time - more stories, more details on personal emotions, trial and error, and results, and much more follow up to the stories.

I have to say I did like it when they listed the estimated prices for things. Although they did this infrequently, just for expensive procedures that may be ineffective. Sorry - I might recommend this book for the current used rate of under $2 if the shipping wasn't $4.99, but I can't justify $12.00 + shipping.

5 out of 5 stars Biology Book Review.......2001-12-20

From an anorexic snake to a myopic kangaroo to a bloated akita, from the tricky diagnoses to the hopeless cases, this captivating paperback tells of the perilous situations that have occurred at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. Is it really right to spend all this time and effort on animals when some people lack food, shelter, and proper medical care? The veterinarians who unveil their heart-warming and emotional stories in this 194-page book, Animal ER, by Vicki Croke (copyright-1999) show us that the world is meant to be shared by animals and humans.
Each chapter of this brilliant book displays and describes a different animal/pet and its unique problem. Biology plays a major part in this book because it's about the science of studying and curing living things. It exposes the drama of life in the emergency ward of a veterinary hospital, which is a biology-related occupation. The first chapter summarizes the atmosphere of the Intensive Care Unit at Tufts; it's sad and yet successful too. The next eleven chapters of Animal ER present various animals and their life-threatening problems. Some require complex surgical procedures, while others are solved by unexpected and simple means. The last chapter returns to the Intensive Care Unit and reveals what the animals teach the veterinarians. The main idea expressed at the closing of the book touched my soul as tears rose to the surface like a newly found spring. Vicki Croke wrote that the animals who are cared for seem to teach simple lessons about life. "Animals continue to surprise me with their patience, their level of tolerance, and their strength," Nishi says, "but most of all, with their ability to forgive" (194).
I would strongly recommend this brilliant book to my friends or those people who are thinking of going into the veterinary field of study. Since I've never had a pet, I cannot relate to the owners of these sick animals; however, I can see this book as a slice of a veterinarian's life. It captures the essence of the Intensive Care Unit during first examinations, x-rays, surgery, and post-operative care. It is clear to see, as they treat animals, that Nishi Dhupa, Dr. Mark Pokras, Dr. John Berg, and other staff members at Tufts have the "healing touch". So even though some people don't have their primary needs met like food, shelter, and clothing, animals have a right to our care and concern.

5 out of 5 stars Sad and Touching Stories.......2001-11-07

Animal ER is a marvelous book for anyone who has an interest in animals or the world of Vets. Most of this book showed how these vets work everyday, but it also touches on the emotional side of the proffession. Vets have to decide when to put an animal to sleep and when to give them extra treatment . They also have a responsibility to comfort the owners. Find out more about the world of the vet by reading this fantastic nonfiction.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully compassionate Author and Compelling stories.......2000-08-31

When my sister lost her beloved Great Dane, I mourned for her too. I'm a cat person, and this big black incredibly sweet baby was the first dog I ever loved. When I visited my sister last year and she showed me this book, explaining that the author had been there in the Tufts Vet ER with her when Azaria was brought in, I was amazed. I continued to be amazed as I saw my sister's very special love for my doggy-niece through the eyes of a total stranger. It would have been very easy to dismiss how painful losing a pet can be, very easy to miss the ties of love between a pet and her owner. My sister loved her dog, quirks and fears and vet bills and all. I loved her too. Thanks, Vicki. Your gentle presentation of their story is the finest tribute Zari could have had.

          Book Description

Berkeley, California (January, 2005) Considered the most flammable state in the US, California has a fire season that lasts eight months, with one in four residents at risk of encountering a wildfire. Since 1990, 53 lives and more than 11,000 structures have been lost in the State to wildfires, costing individuals, and local and state economies millions of dollars.

Many homes are landscaped and gardened in a way that actually increases the risk of wildfire damage. Wilderness Press is pleased to announce the publication of Firescaping, Creating fire-resistant landscapes, gardens, and properties in California's diverse environments, a practical, hands-on guide to help lower that risk. Its fresh, reality-based perspective gives simple, achievable strategies for those who want to reduce their garden's fire hazard, while promoting its long-term health and function.

This book describes what types of properties and landscapes are higher-risk, how to make a home more accessible to fire-fighters, and what to do to minimize the chances that a home will be damaged or destroyed by a wildfire. It covers fire-safe fencing and roofing materials, has tips on using water efficiently, gives best methods of effective vegetation removal, and provides versatile and comprehensive plant lists and maintenance calendars useful for those living in California's diverse climate zones. Includes two-color diagrams and illustrations.

Professionals from fire-protection agencies as well as landscape and architecture experts have contributed to Firescaping, to make it a complete and essential resource.

While the book includes specific plant lists and climate information for California, any Western homeowner who lives in an area that is at risk for wildfires needs a copy of this book. It is an essential resource for landscape architects, landscapers, developers, community leaders, and groups concerned with minimizing the risk of fire to their neighborhoods.

          Book Description

In 1775 Prince Marcantonio Borghese IV and the architect Antonio Asprucci embarked upon a decorative renovation of the Villa Borghese. Initially their attention focused on the Casino, the principal building at the villa, which had always been a semi-public museum. By 1625 it housed much of
the Borghese's outstanding collection of sculpture. Integrating this statuary with vast baroque ceiling paintings and richly ornamented surfaces, Asprucci created a dazzling and unified homage to the Borghese family, portraying its legendary ancestors as well as its newly born heir.
In this book, Carole Paul reads the inventive decorative program as a set of exemplary scenes for the education of the ideal Borghese prince. Her wide-ranging essay also situates the Villa Borghese among the sumptuous palaces and suburban villas of Rome's collectors of antiquities and outlines the
renovated Casino's pivotal role in the historic transition from the princely collection to the public museum. Rounding out this volume is a catalog of the Getty Research Institute's fifty-nine drawings for the refurbishing of the Villa Borghese and Alberta Campitelli's discussion of sketches for
the short-lived Museo di Gabii, the Villa's other antiquities museum.
