Bring on the next one!.......2005-07-08
Wise-cracking thriller.......2003-11-06
In this case the variation is classical. The letters are from Thanatos, Greek for death, and address Irene as Cassandra, the seer who's fated never to be believed until too late. Thanatos describes his victims and methods in terms of Greek and Roman mythology and taunts Irene with the possibility that if she's quick enough she might save a victim and catch the killer. And if she's not, she may be his final victim.
Burke keeps the pace moving. With ingenuity, police work and investigative skills that ring true, Irene and her fiance, police detective Frank Harriman, find a link between the victims that reaches back 40 years. Still the mystery is far from solved and people keep dying while Irene finds strange tokens from Thanatos in her locked car.
A good, suspenseful story with plenty of meat in the plot, a bang-up finish and just a little too much wise-cracking banter from Irene.
Another fabulous Irene Kelly mystery!.......2003-03-11
In this 3rd installment, Irene is recovering from the physical and psychological injuries she incurred in "Sweet Dreams, Irene" (definitely an ironic title, I'd say!) and is trying to recover her natural (feisty) courage to deal with a new threat: someone sending her mail, calling her his "Cassandra" and giving her "hints" about future horrific murders defined/described by mythology ... implying that SHE must solve the murders to stop them.
Besides dealing with the frustrations of her physical limitations from previous injuries (leg cast, sore hand, painful shoulder), Irene must conquer the unwelcome fears her previous experiences had inflicted upon her ... and recapture the fearless curiosity that made her such a great reporter ... so she can keep more people from getting killed and bring the killer to justice.
I enjoyed "watching" Irene follow the clues (and her instincts)to investigate & solve the mystery, even while dealing with the "conflicts" of reporter vs. police (confidential questions/informers) and conflict of interest (being engaged to a detective!)*AND* trying to deal with overly sympathetic friends, family and "suspects" who want to help.
Did I say I had to read the whole book in one sitting?
Pat, looking forward to the next Irene adventure!

"Here you have these wonderful files, and you seem little interested in how we cope with increasing age ... our adaptability, our zest for life," one of these subjects wrote to Vaillant, a researcher, psychiatrist, and Harvard Medical School professor, about how he was using this information. Vaillant took this advice to heart. In Aging Well, he presents personal narratives about people from these studies whom he interviewed personally in their 70s and 80s. He describes their history, relationships, hardships, philosophies, and sources of joy. We learn their perspectives and what makes them want to get up in the morning.
We also learn what makes old age vital and interesting. Vaillant discusses the important adult developmental tasks, such as identity, intimacy, and generativity (giving to the next generation), and provides important clues to a healthy, meaningful, satisfying old age. Health in old age, we learn, is not predicted by low cholesterol or ancestral longevity, but by factors such as a stable marriage, adaptive coping style (the ability to make lemonade out of life's lemons), and regular exercise.
Vaillant is empathetic and sometimes surprisingly poetic: "Owning an old brain, you see, is rather like owning an old car.... Careful driving and maintenance are everything." He freely includes subjective observations and interpretations, giving us a richer picture of the people he interviewed and insights into their lives. Aging Well is recommended for readers who are interested in learning about the quality-of-life issues of aging from the people who have the most to teach. --Joan Price

The close-up photos in the "identifying" area are certainly helpful, but are not for the squeamish. And it's not just the creepy crawlies that are a little discomforting--shots of full-blown bacterial infections on tree trunks aren't exactly a welcome sight, either. But to ensure healthy lives for their plants, responsible gardeners need to be as familiar with ladybug larvae as they are with lavender. It's better to recognize these problems in the early stages. Treatments discussed focus on organic and biological methods whenever possible. Beer-traps, barriers, and beneficial bugs are all explained in detail, along with reminders that regular weeding and cleanliness aren't just for looks, but for health as well. When chemical solutions are recommended, proper care is emphasized--not just for you, but for the other plants and animals in your garden. Proper techniques for preparation, treatment, storage, and disposal are gone over at length, as well as stern advice to only use these in moderation, and correctly--if they won't solve the problem thoroughly, then they're not worth the risks involved. Thorough and straightforwardly technical, even beginning gardeners will find it possible to tackle tough problems with this intelligent aid. --Jill Lightner

Book Description
DeWayne Wickham was just eight years old when his father murdered his mother and then killed himself. Woodholme is his poignant memoir about growing up haunted by this traumatic event and about how he eventually overcame the reality of his loss. A troublemaker in school who nearly ended up in jail, DeWayne found a home among the black caddies at an all-white Jewish country club in suburban Baltimore--Woodholme--an oasis from the strife of the civil rights era and his own problem-plagued life. The encounters he had there helped him to accept responsibility as an unwed seventeen-year-old father, and finally to come to terms with the death of his parents. Gracefully written and wryly humorous, Woodholme is an evocative portrait of growing up black in the 1960s, a sensitive exploration of paternalism and paternity, and a deeply moving story of self-discovery.

Vaillant, George E. (2002). Aging well. Boston, Little, Brow.......2005-01-01
George E. Vaillant is well qualified to write this book. He is a psychiatrist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, a professor at Harvard Medical School, director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, and a respected researcher. Harvard Medical School professors have been studying the basic elements of adult human development for more than five decades. Three separate cohorts of 824 individuals were selected as teenagers for different facts of mental and physical health and studied for the rest of their lives to observe the adult life cycle and to provide a theoretical framework for understanding how older people become fulfilled or not.
Harvard men were studied. In 1940, men who went to Harvard were rich, privileged, white, born to American born grandparents, and expected to equal or exceed their natural ability.
In 1939, Sheldon Glueck obtained funding to do a prospective study of 500 youth sent to reform school and 500 matched school boys who had not been in any legal trouble
at age 14. His wife restudied the groups at ages 17, 25, and 32. The control nondeliquent group had the same social risk factors that helped doom the delinquents-had repeated two grades or more in school, had foreign born parents, lived in blighted neighborhoods, and were from families known to five or more social agencies and more than two-thirds were on welfare. Valinti inherited the study when the subjects were 40, and subjects continued to have physical examinations every five years. At age 60, all but 2 of the 456 subjects were known to be dead or alive.
For the Terman Women Sample, Terman tried to identify most of the brightest children in his three city area. He asked teachers to indentify the brightest in each class. He learned that the unattractive and shy children tended to be overlooked so that he only captured about 80 percent of the bright children. He used the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test to identify 1 percent of the California urban school children with IOs greater than 135 to 140 most of whom were born between 1908 and 1914. Four generations of investigators have followed the Terman men and women by questionnaires about every five years and by personal interviews in 1940 and 1950. The Terman women were not asked to provide regular physical exams. However, when compared to classmates, they had better nutrition, more humor, common sense, perseverance, leadership and popularity among their classmates. By age 80, they had half the mortality of white American women in their birth cohort.
In comparison, at age sixty-eight to seventy, the inner city men had the same physical decline as the Terman and Harvard cohorts at seventy-eight to eighty. The difference was attributed to less education, more obesity, and greater alcohol and cigarette abuse among the inner city cohort.
These cohorts seemed to demonstrate that it is social aptitude or emotional intelligence rather than brilliance or parental social class that leads to a well-adapted old age. Vaillant concluded that individual life style choices contribute a greater role than genetics, wealth, race, or other factors in determining how happy people are in late life. He found that " It is not the bad things that happen to us that doom us; it is the good people who happen to us at any age that facilitate enjoyable old age. Healing relationships are facilitated by a capacity for gratitude, for forgiveness.... A good marriage at age 50 predicted positive aging at 80. But surprisingly, low cholesterol levels at age 50 did not. Alcohol abuse -unrelated to unhappy childhood-consistently predicted unsuccessful aging, in part because alcoholism damaged future social supports. Learning to play and create after retirement and learning to gain younger friends as we lose older ones add more to life's enjoyment than retirement income. Objective good physical health was less important to successful aging than subjective good health.... It is all right to be ill as long as you do not feel sick" p. 13.
This research report can help us understand that we can do little to changer our genetic make-up, but we can change our habits so we avoid alcohol and smoking, eat a healthy diet, exercise to maintain a healthy weight, develop loving relationships, and continue to learn. These are important lessons for all of us wanting to age well, but it takes a sophisticated reader, knowledgable about research and willing to wade through research findings to read this research report. The book has 12 chapters, 11 appendices, notes, acknowledgments, and an index.

Andy is a former executive who followed his dream of opening the type of wine shop, in New York City, that he HIMSELF always wanted to visit, but could seldom find. He has written this book in a very readable, accessible style. He speaks to you as if you were his client who might come in to his store to ask his advice, time after time, on what wine to buy for your various different needs, over time.
There was one really important thing I learned from this book, which was not covered in either my internet wine course, or in another excellent book I had purchased. That was wine BODY. In my wine-tasting group, we had been noticing the different percentages of alcohol marked on different bottles. But we didn't really know what that meant.
Andy explains that the very first thing you should consider in choosing a wine--even before taste--is body. Body refers to the weight of a wine. Wines can be light, medium, or full-bodied. Andy says the old rules about white wine with fish, and red wine with meat, have completely fallen by the wayside. The new rules say that warmer days, or more delicate foods, require lighter, more delicate wines. Colder days, or richer, bigger fare necessitate heartier wines. The degree of alcohol in a wine is an indication of whether it will be light, medium, or full-bodied. Generally light-bodied wines range from 7 to 10.5 percent alcohol; medium wines range from 10.5 to13 percent; and full-bodied wines are over 13 percent. I had never looked at wine this way, and found it an extremely helpful tool to use when selecting wine in a store.
One of the things I liked most in this book are Andy's suggestions for "educating your palate," or learning about the different grape varieties through a series of specific tastings. He talks about eight grape varieties that he calls "the everydays." He explains that once you know what these eight varieties taste like, and once you know among those which you like, and don't like, how you can make intelligent decisions about most wines on the shelf. He suggests which categories of wines to taste together (usually an Old World and a New World wine in a single grape variety, compared against a third wine, which is a contrasting type of taste, so that you can see the difference). For each grape variety, he gives a good description of what the grape is supposed to taste like, how the grape taste differs in Old and New World regions, and what foods he recommends pairing it with.
He then has another section discussing the lesser-known grape varieties. He also explains what each variety tastes like, and tells you who would like it. This is based upon you having discovered which of the eight varieties you like, to which he compares the new varieties. For example, he says if you enjoy Chardonnay, you might also like Viognier, or Gewurztraminer. He finishes with making two small, nifty charts, which could be easily photocopied and taken to the wine store. The first chart lists the "everyday eight" grapes across the top. Down the side are the other 16 grape varieties which are less common. You are to choose on top which varieties you like, and look for dots in the column below, which indicate which other wines you might therefore like. What a tool! The next chart (also on a single page) lists the 24 grape varieties discussed in the book (the "everyday eight" + the other 16) across the top of the page. Down the side are all the most common flavor descriptors (57), in alphabetical order. Under each wine, dots appear under the name of the descriptors that are supposed to describe each type of grape. Again, what a great tool! I know my wine-tasting group is going to really appreciate these charts, too.
I am so delighted Andy wrote this book and that I found it at Amazon. I live in Morocco. When you walk in to buy wine, help is absolutely non-existent. Now this won't be a problem for me anymore, as I will be able to make intelligent decisions myself. I have learned so much form this book. I literally could not put it down, and read it cover-to-cover (180 pages) in a single day. Andy's writing style is a pleasure to read, and he includes many clever anecdotes. He talks about his brother-in-law in California, who goes out to dinner, and phones him in New York to discuss the restaurant's wine list! He also uses many clever wordings throughout the book which even had me laughing out loud while reading. I especially enjoyed an anecdote he included about a philosophy class, which ends with a punch line about wine.
I plan to follow every one of Andy's wine-tasting suggestions. I would very much like to thank Andy for writing this book. It distills all of his hard-earned knowledge into an easy, useable, readable format, that can be referred to again and again.
