In Paradise, Ohio, the annual July 4th Founders Day Celebration is the highlight of the year. The biggest event is the pie eating competition sponsored by the Breitenstrater Pie Company. Only this year's contest will be one that no one will ever forget!
When an executive dies during the contest, rumors of murder surface. That is when local laundromat owner, Josie Toadfern, and her circle of friends jump into the mix. But what Josie does not know is that there is a deep, dark family secret lingering in the air that may very well shock all those around.
**** This is a story that just begs readers to come get lost in Paradise and all the people that life there. The characters are full of flavor and wit. I found it to be amusing and charming, all at once. A "must read" for mystery fans. ****

Everyone in Paradise, Ohio, is eagerly awaiting the upcoming July 4th Founders Day Celebration. Trudy Breitenstrater is a mixed up youth who gets local laundromat owner and stain removal expert Josie Toadfern to sponsor her to the Paradise Historical Society meeting. At this meeting the Paradise Town Hall Players usually each get their parts for the upcoming July Fourth Breitenstrater Founder's Day play. Seems Trudy has rewritten the town play, unbeknownst to Josie. No one seems too happy about this. Especially her father, Alan.
Then Alan announces that at the annual pie eating contest sponsored by the Breitenstrater Pie Company, he will be making a big announcement. His brother Cletus says that he has one too.
Since Josie's uncle Otis has walked off the renovation job at the Paradise Theatre, she steps in to help her cousin Sally complete the job before July 4th.
At the pie eating contest, Cletus is no where to be found, so Alan steps into his place. Unfortunately Alan ends up dead before he can make his announcement. Apparent heart attack, but Josie thinks the timing smells of murder. But, can she figure out what really happened.
She enlists her friend Winnie to do some research. She also gets her boyfriend Owen to help, but only minimally because he has recently lied and she isn't sure what her feelings are for him anymore. This is just one of the many things going on to sidetrack Josie.
Many things begin to happen. Josie is right in the middle of most of them trying to uncover the truth. She ends up putting herself in danger as well.
This is a well-written mystery. It is a good cozy. Josie and her friends are likeable characters. Paradise is a typical small town with many secrets.

The small Ohio town of Paradise is home to Josie Toadfern, owner of Toadfern?s Laundromat and an expert in removing stains. Paradise is a small town where the leading family, the Breitenstraters own the town?s main business the Breitenstrater Pie Factory. Josie is looking forward to the annual pie-eating contest but the day is marred when Alan Breitenstrates dies after eating a pie that was originally meant for his brother Cletus. Cletus never showed up for the event even though he attended it every year for decades.
Josie, who was watching the scenario, casually, asks her boyfriend and her best friend to take the pies and bring them back to the Laundromat while she distracts the police and a security guard. Though the authorities think the victim died of a heart attack, Josie wants to get the pies tested to see if they contained poison. When a ferret eats a piece of one of the pies and falls into a coma, Josie is sure that at least one of the pies is poisoned. She intends to find out who poisoned the pie thinking that information will lead her to a killer.
Shannon Short?s second Toadfern mystery is very delightful and a real puzzler because no one is above suspicion in this charming cozy. The cast of characters are totally charming and quirky, the type of people one would want for a next-door neighbor. DEATH OF A DEER DISH PIE is an upbeat who-done-it that will have readers laughing at some of the actors of the main characters, including the protagonist.

Disturbing and dangerous.......2007-01-27
This book was purchased to learn more about hormone balancing, particularly the use of bioidentical hormones as replacement therapy. Instead, I found it to be an endorsement of what we've been told for years and has done so much damage: estrogen supplementation recommended for most all our hormone-related ills. Not only that, Dr. Greene condones synthetic pharmaceutical hormone use as well as bioidentical options. It is well known the havoc they as a class of drugs has caused in women's bodies for decades. It is also well known that many women today actually suffer from estrogen dominance, yet this fact goes unstated. To make matters worse, hormone level testing to determine existing levels before supplementation, via blood or saliva, is never even mentioned. Progesterone as a balancing hormone is given hardly a nod by Dr. Greene, and that not a favorable one. I was shocked to read he not only thinks birth control pills are safe, but he endorses their use for other purposes than avoiding pregnancy. For example, Seasonale, an oral contraceptive that subjects women to 9 more weeks per year of synthetic hormonal exposure than conventional monthly birth control garners this comment from Dr. Greene, "Seasonale is another good alternative.... designed so that you have one menstrual cycle per season. This kind of menstrual regulation is totally safe and preferred by a great many women for its convenience and predictability." Meanwhile, the manufacturer's prescribing information states, "Like other birth control pills, SEASONALE® has serious risks, which can be life threatening, including blood clots, stroke, and heart attack and are increased if you smoke cigarettes....." To make matters worse, Seasonale is listed under the heading, "Best Hormone Treatments" at the end of the section on sleep problems related to the menstrual cycle as well as after a discussion of cognitive decline. He keeps alive the theories that estrogen replacement protects against Alzheimer's, certain cancers, and many other age-related afflictions even though there is a growing body of evidence that says otherwise. Although he does discuss hormone balancing through numerous methods (diet, lifestyle, etc.), I would hardly call his program a "breakthrough". His advice in the book is slanted to the mainstream method of pharmaceutical "answers". I was very disturbed reading this book, and actually threw it away fearing another woman might read it and become assured that synthetic, patented estrogen compounds are safe and useful for many ailments. This book is dangerous.
Very Important Information...........2006-11-17
I've read quite a few books on the subject of HRT and hormonal balance. Yet, Dr. Greene's book is by far the most comprehensive and best written of all those I've come across.
The material emcompasses not only information about menopausal issues, but information about the hormonal system of a female from the beginning of life. It is a book that must be read by every female who is curious about what makes her tick...and is willing to learn a lot about how to keep her health at an optimum.
I found the book fascinating, easy to read and a very very potent support tool when speaking to my health care providers about how I wanted my hormonal treatments to be designed. Really clear information about Estradiol, Estriol and Estrone. Which one of these estrogens is helpful and which ones are mainly waste product. And how to provide yourself with the appropriate amount of the more valuable estrogen in order to keep the brain healthy and cognitive functions at peak effectiveness. This is a book to give as a present to your female friends and their daughters. A book to have, to use, to share even with the male people in your lives. Particularly if you care enough about them to want them to know deeply about what makes you, as a female, work.

This is the most comprehensive, factual information that I have ever read about the issues surrounding hormonal imbalances. Dr. Greene gets right to the point and explains very technical information in an easy to read style. His natural, holistic approach to solving menopausal related problems, is cutting edge and easy to understand. This is now my number one gift for all of my dearest friends.

The dozen or more recipes tried from this book have been terrific. I am primarily interested in appetizers that can be made ahead, frozen and re-heated. A large number of the recipes fit this criteria. I have bought several copies as gifts for friends based on the recipes I have tried and I've enjoyed this book as much as I enjoy my new beverage of choice. Made from 100% organic soy, taste just like coffee and no caffeine. Finally, I got rid of that wired up feeling all day and feeling great. Look for it on the net by googling "s o yfee".

Endless Choices for Parties and Gatherings.......2004-09-01
My mother swears by all the Junior League Cookbooks which she always relies on for parties and gatherings. This was one of the first of many I tried!!!! Filled with endless choices of creative and easy to prepare starters including cold and hot plates and some ample first courses such as shirimp, crab cakes, cheesecakes, quiches and more--All the ingredients are easy to find and common to most well stocked pantries- so you always can find something at the last minute to prepare!! Also, many of these receipes can be made in even less time if you use pre-chopped veggies,pre-cut meats, etc.
The only thing I am not crazy about is that many of the dips and cold startes use commercial cream cheese, sour cream or similar products to create the base of the receipe--just doesn't seem to heart healthy to me...But none the less, they are all yummy in the end if you don't focus on that.
Whether for work gathering, faimly and friends you will be cetain to find one or many starter you can rely on again and again for stress free entertaining!

This is geared towards party recipes--- from drinks to demitast soup to finger deserts to all kinds of dips and snack mixes.
Many will find here the ole reliables, and as I can determine, just about all of them--from Party Mix fame to Wassail to many ways of serving crab and shrimp dip.
I particularly am attracted to the unusual, and there is plenty of that here. I enjoy such as Escargots A La San Diego, Goat Cheese Tortillas, and Papaya Stuffed with Curried Crab.
This will assist those looking for some easy but delicious things to serve the party guests that will bring raves.

The Party Recipes from the Charleston Junior League is my favorite cookbook. Of all the cookbooks I own I always buy the ones that have lots of pictures. I usually like to see what it looks like first before I make anything. This cookbook was the exception, as it does not have pictures of the food. I looked through the cookbook and immediately saw at least 30 recipes that I knew I wanted to make. I couldn't put it down, as there was such a collection of recipes that I always wanted to try. Whenever I need a recipe for a party or gathering, this cookbook is always the first one that I pick up. I have never seen so many party favorites in one book. I also like the short comments with each recipe from the recipe contributor. The people of Charleston, South Carolina know how to throw a successful party. I'm glad they shared their most popular recipes in this book.

Anytime you can find a cookbook that has been reprinted as many times as this one, you know that you have found something special. As diverse as the city itself, CHARLESTON RECEIPTS has a unique blend of regional recipes, kitchen hints and ideas, and practical shortcuts. I did enjoy the book and many of the photographs were a pleasure -- however, I was SO glad I bought it used from an Amazon reseller. I would have been really annoyed if I paid anything close to list price. I felt this book did a surface job both with pictures and narratives. It left me wanting more, but not in a good way. Also, it probably should be called "The Most Beautiful Garden STRUCTURES in the World" -- because garden structures dominate the photographs. Criteria for choosing "the most beautiful" also unclear.

I'm not sure why the previous reviewer did not like this book. I thought the photographs were absolutely beautiful, vibrant, and clear. Each garden was photographed from several different angles. The photos take up entire pages and several are on fold-out pages for a panoramic view. The book is printed on quality paper and is quite heavy. I bought this book as a gift for my Mother but I enjoyed looking through it several times before I finally giftwrapped it.

I love gardens. So, I was excited about receiving this book. The photos weren't as beautiful as I thought they would be. I wanted to return the book. I wish I had. I'm glad Amazon did not charge the list price of $60.00. I would have returned it for sure.

Le Toquin photographs gardens from around the world, including Iranian oases, Italien grottos, English topiaries, and Versailles in winter. The photographs are gorgeous and there are numerous fold-out pages with panorama shots that give a feel for the garden as a whole. The choice of locations highlights the wide range of spaces that are encompassed within the definition of a garden (including one with no plants whatsoever). The accompanying text provides summaries of the histories and predominant features of each garden, but the amazing photographs are what really makes this book shine.

Although this text is a vital first step in design education, it falls short for an experienced designer; basic juxtaposition, etc. Get it out of a library and spend your money on any of the Looking Closer series by Michael Beirut... they will infinitely expand your perceptions of what design is and explores contemporary issues facing designers today.

This new edition brings fully up-to-date a book widely praised for its clear and objective presentation of changes in American racial attitudes during the second half of the twentieth century.
The book retains the division of racial attitudes into principles of equality, government implementation of those principles, and social distance, but adds questions concerning affirmative action and beliefs about sources of inequality. A conceptual section now opens the book, evidence on social desirability has been added, and a new chapter deals with cohort effects and with the impact of income, education, and gender. In key instances, randomized experiments are introduced that test hypotheses more rigorously than is ordinarily possible with survey data. Throughout, the authors have reconsidered earlier ideas and introduced new thinking.

Schuman et al.'s "Racial Attitudes in America" is a must-read for students and researchers interested in race relations and intersections between race and politics. Well-written and insightful, "Racial Attitudes in America" is also very understandable for the curious observer of race relations. Schuman et al. analyze national survey data from the 1970s to the present in order to understand how the public feels about such important issues as affirmative action and other "race-targeted" policies. Moreover, the authors examine the extent to which prejudice and other negative racial attitudes are still widespread in the United States. Though extremely informative, the book devotes far more attention to examining trends in racial attitudes than to understanding the sources of them. Nonetheless, this book will provide a valuable starting point for any student or researcher interested in understanding the sources of racial attitudes.
