Mah-Jongg?
Yep. In hip Hollywood, that kitsch old game is fast becoming the next "new" obsession -- and that calls for a party! Madeline Bean and her charming partner Wesley Westcott are determined to throw a gonzo Chinese New Year banquet. But among the hot mah-jongg tiles, the steamy dim sum, and the frosty Singapore slings, no one expects to find one of the players ice-cold dead!
Meanwhile, in one of the historic celebrity mansions that Wesley is restoring as a sideline, a well-aimed crowbar uncovers a stash of precious objects -- including an antique mah-jongg set. As Madeline pieces together how these two events are connected, she must separate the yin from the yang to uncover a killer. It doesn't take a fortune cookie to spell it out. There is always a price to pay...whether gambling at mah-jongg -- or murder.

Always full of surprises.......2007-08-28
One thing that I've come to count on with books in the Madeline Bean series, is surprise. Although Madeline very clearly states that she "hates surprises", the plots for these books always have a lot of them, right from the beginning. The first surprise in this book is the discovery of an antique mah-jongg set that Mad's partner Wesley finds in a house that he is renovating. From there Madeline finds herself in all kinds of surprising situations as she tries to trace the history of this antique game. It's a journey that takes us along with Madeline to the houses of the rich and famous in Hollywood. And of course there will be at least one body along the way. These books are lots of fun. The characters are believable, and the mystery is not that easy to figure out. A smart and "kitschy" series. I can't wait for more.
First Time For This Author.......2005-10-04
This was the first book I've read by this author. I've read many books by varying writers and favor those mysteries that add a little humor to their stories and styles. I was a little disappointed in my first read by Ms. Farmer as I felt it was pretty slow going and didn't really catch my attention until midway. Too much emphasis on the game of Mah-Jongg and how it's played for my tastes. It may have been just the theme of this particular book that was off for me. Hopefully, "Killer Wedding" or "Sympathy For The Devil" will make me want to become a follower of Jerrilyn Farmer's work.
An Old Mah-Jongg Set, a Theft, and a Mysterious Red Book.......2005-02-08
This intriguing mystery finds Madeline Bean and her co-workers preparing a Chinese New Year's feast for the Sweet and Sour Mah-Jongg club, a group of Hollywood friends who meet to play the latest Hollywood rage, Mah-Jongg. On the day of club'a Chinese New Year's party, Madeline's partner Wesley shows Maddie an antique Mah-Jongg set that he found hidden in the wall of an old house that he is renovating. Wes knows that the MJ set belonged to old Hollywood legend Dickie McBride, and he wants Maddie to return the set to McBride's widow, Quita McBride, who is a member of the Sweet and Sour MJ club. Maddie and Wes also discover a silver dagger and a slim red book hidden in the bottom of the game case. Before Maddie has a chance to give the MJ set to Quita, the case and everything in it is stolen from a Santa Monica farmer's market. Running after the thief, Maddie and Wes find the MJ case in a dumpster, but the dagger and book are nowhere to be found. As the story develops, Quita McBride is discovered dead, having fallen down a flight of stairs after the MJ party, and Maddie is convinced that Quita's death is no accident. Maddie sets out to find out who killed Quita, and she is convinced that the missing red book will lead her to the killer.
This was a very well-written and funny mystery. I loved the background about the Chinese New Year celebration, the game of Mah-Jongg, and the culinary background of dim sum. Madeline's love life takes another left turn, as she dumps boyfriend Arlo, and this time Maddie swears it is for good. The final dinner shared by Arlo and Maddie is a very funny scene.
Every detail in this plot clicks, just like the Mah Jongg tiles in the games played throughout the story. "Dim Sum Dead" is the strongest entry yet in the Madeline Bean series.
fourth in this charming culinary mystery series is delicious.......2003-04-25
Event planner Madeline Bean and her partner Wesley are again surrounded by mysteries, mayhem and celebrity sightings in this fourth instalment to Farmer's charming series of culinary mysteries.
This time Hollywood insiders are enraptured with mah-jongg as the partners prepare a dim sum Chinese New Year feast, and the clues to a murder are scattered among Hollywood's oldest secrets. Along the way, you learn about the origins of dim sum, the significance of particular mah-jongg tiles, how to make an authentic Singapore Sling, and the correct way to greet a star.
Madeline's personal life is realistic without detracting from the story, and the story is interesting right away and paced well. The mystery is well-integrated but not transparent. The dialogue is fun, and the characters are likeable. This is a lively mix of Hollywood dish, mouth-watering recipes and the Perils of Pauline. Quite fun. Well-written. Looking forward to the next one.
Good little morsel.......2002-09-30
This book will keep you turning the pages to find out who did it! Drop into the world of aging Hollywood starlets and the new craze of Mah Jong. Sweet little mystery with an upbeat undertone.

A brand-new paranormal romance from Five Star!
When boat-smuggler Mahri Zin kidnaps a Healer to cure her family and he turns out to be the Prince of Sea Forest, she must use too much of the magical zabbaroot to escape his enemies. From her root-induced coma she learns that the natives of this planet plan for her to Bond with him, a joining so final that to tear it asunder would mean the death of them both. Mahri only wants her freedom, but as they plunge through the dangerous waters of the swamps she finds it hard to resist the physical lure of Prince Korl. And the Prince must change the entire world of Sea Forest in order to gain her heart, and ultimately determine mankind's survival on this landless planet.
Kathryne Kennedy is a college graduate and business owner, and has published nearly a dozen short stories in the speculative romance genre. She lives in Arizona with her husband, two sons, and the rest of her wonderful family.
Customer Reviews:
UNBELIEVABLE!.......2005-08-01
This book has such vivid descriptions of Sea Forest that the fictional world comes to life immediately. I LOVED the setting, and the characters!
The main characters are Mahri, a water-rat, and Korl, the Prince of Sea Forest and a Healer.
One night Mahri sneaks up to the Healer Tree in the city to kidnap a Healer to save her village and family. Mahri has a high tolerance of zabbaroot, which allows her to See and have magical powers, but water-rats and commoners are not allowed the knowledge of the root, nor is it legal for them to use it or sell it. Mahri has a very stong tolerance for the zabbaroot, but she does not know how to use it to heal her family from a deadly disease that has spread through the swamps. Her lifemate and young child have already died a horrible death because she was unable to save them, and she vows to not let the same thing happen to her lifemate's family.
This is the reason that Mahri decides to kidnap a Healer that no one will notice is missing...instead she kidnaps Prince Korl, and has the royals after her. Mahri curses her luck...but what she doesn't know is that the natives of Sea Forest have brought Korl and Mahri together, because she is his soul's other half.
The arrogant Prince falls in love with Mahri instantly, even though she is just a water-rat, as he is constantly reminding her. But stubborn Mahri will not give in to her feelings for Korl, and only admits to a physical attraction.
Korl and Mahri have many adventures in the beautiful and mysterious swamps, and when they reach Mahri's village and find her niece deathly ill, the two agree to Bond, which is the only way to heal the little girl. No one has Bonded in years because the Bond links two minds together for life, and once one of them dies, so will the other.
Still, Mahri resists Korl, and Korl is angered because usually he gets anything he wants, and he vows that he will make Mahri love him.
I won't give anything else away, but this is a VERY good fantasy/science fiction that I recommend to anyone who likes romances, because this is first and foremost a romance, with some sexual scenes interspersed throughout the story. This story, ESPECIALLY the setting, is absolutely breathtaking and unforgettable, and you won't want to miss it. I really hope that this author will write another book like this one soon.
Couldn't put it down!!.......2005-01-16
This was a delightful romance/science fiction novel. The setting was very refreshing compared to normal science fiction genre of a waterworld. The protagonists had plenty of sparks flying and sexual attraction to keep the book interesting. Great description of the world, but it makes me want another book, this went too fast. I wish the other characters were developed better, but the book would not have read as fluidly as it has if effort was made in that direction and certainly leaves room for another of a series book. I enjoyed this book thoroughly and would recommend it for adult readers since there was plenty of sexual activity and reference throughout.
Phenomenal fantasy world of trees and water .......2004-07-29
On an unknown planet somewhere in the future, humans have created a new civilization; one that requires Zabba to survive. For Mahri, a swamp-rat and a smuggler of Zabba root, she is content to live in the wild swamp. But when a serious illness threatens those she cares about, she travels into the city, to the Healers Tree trying to get aid for the people in her village. Hoping to kidnap a low level healer that won't be missed, she is instead horrified to discover she has abducted the crown Prince Korl!
Ms Kennedy has written a where technology is lost, huge creatures of the sea rule the planet and people live in giant trees that serve as cities and land. I love this world! It's a different version of Kevin Costners' WATERWORLD, but one I found so much more believable. Monsters still live underwater and giant birds of prey (think flying dinosaurs) live above the tree canopy. The forests are so beautiful thru Maris' eyes and described so well by Ms Kennedy. There is both beauty and danger in the jungle; were animals are familiar, and yet and the same time so different than our Earth animals.
Zabba root is coveted by the Royals, as is the true history of Mahris's people hidden by them as well. Zabba, from what I understand, opens the mind, and depending on the person's tolerance depends on the extra-sensory abilities allowed.
While the attraction between Mahri and Korl has a lot of chemistry and sparks flying, Mahri fights the attraction' at the same time it's an instantaneous union. She doesn't trust him, yet she is too easy on him. Regardless, I really liked Mahri as a woman. She is strong, independent and yet discovers she needs more to be complete. Korl is strong and is studying the Healing arts to help his people. He is a healer first, then the crown prince. However, with Mahri he is tenderhearted (like all hero's should be) yet still manages to have the arrogance you would expect as due his station of Crown Prince. I felt he was the epitome of a good alpha hero.
Jaja, Mahris' pet is part monkey-part fish, as well as telepathic. In my mind I had such a visual of all his facial expressions that between his actions and his personality I laughed out loud.
BENEATH THE THIRTEEN MOONS is such an awesome story! I only hope Ms Kennedy has plans for future novels as I highly recommend this novel.

Terrific story..........2004-04-08
This is a terrific story. When someone loaned me this book, I did not think it would be nearly as good as my friend was exclaiming. It turned out to be even BETTER than I could have possibly imagined.
I tell everyone I know to go look for this title in the stores and that is not something I do often. I am going to get my own copy, for sure!
Buy this book! Enough said.

W-O-W. Don't miss this one!.......2004-03-12
Picture a world entirely of swamp where people lived in homes carved into the trees.
Mahri Zin was what the Royals called a water rat. She was a boat-smuggler whose only thought was to kidnap a Healer to cure her hidden village, even if it killed her. Mahri had a high tolerance for zabba, but even with all the power the root gave her she could not save her village without the knowledge Healers had. When she finally kidnapped a Healer, he turned out to be Prince Korl Com'nder! Even so, Mahri could not return the Prince of Sea Forest until her village was safe.
Korl was the most arrogant, spoiled-rotten man with an extremely healthy ego. He fell for Mahri even when he had woken up to find that Mahri had taken control of his muscles with her root enhanced powers and was knocking out his guards with her bone staff. She WOULD be his! What he wanted, he got! He just had to make her understand it.
Korl was a Healer first, a Prince second. But when they realized the only way to save the village was to have a Bond of Power, they still hesitated. A Bond was for life, unbreakable. Whenever one of them died, the other would too. They would be One, knowing each other inside and out. They would See into each other's very souls. They would share power...until death.
Korl's time with Mahri and her village would change him. However, when he finally returned to the Palace Tree, his half-sister would do all she could to kill him and take the Crown. Only Mahri could save him. Together, Mahri and Korl would change the entire world as they knew it!
***** In a single word, "Wow!" I mean W-O-W-! I have never read such a wonderful tale as this. Kathryne Kennedy's computer must smolder from the power she creates in her stories! I simply cannot describe how awesome or how thrilling I found this novel to be. I am begging everyone out there who reads my words here...BUY THIS BOOK! If you love romance and fantasy (magic powers) you will NOT be disappointed. Enough said. *****

Don-David Lusterman, a psychologist practicing in Baldwin, New York, believes that couples who work hard can save their marriages following an affair: "People often find that once infidelity is discovered and its aftereffects are behind them, their relationship is stronger than before, and subsequent infidelity is unlikely." This isn't true only of married couples--Lusterman points out that people in long-term, committed relationships, whether straight or gay, face the same devastating emotions and have to go through a similar rebuilding process if they want to remain together after one has strayed. Whether or not a troubled couple chooses to stay together, Lusterman says the best outcome is when both partners experience changes and new insights into their lives. He provides several case studies in which couples began to regain their trust through new communication, and instructs on the kind of feelings-expressing language that can help. (He also provides a section on finding a good therapist.) This book will help people on either side of an affair begin to understand what's going on, and help them find the resources they need to continue that quest. --Ben Kallen

Faith and Trust Put to the Test.......2007-10-05
This is a brief and succinct book on the subject of infidelity. While much of the material is addressed to couples experiencing marital difficulties, the counsel and advice provided is helpful to unmarried couples in long term relationships also. Too often, the term "infidelity" is used as a polite euphemism for adultery. While infidelity can include adultery, a more narrow term which has both legal and moral implications, infidelity is really a much broader concept that relates to betrayal, disloyalty and faithlessness. Infidelity is all about breaching trust. As Lusterman correctly observes, while adultery always involves illicit sexual activities in violation of marital vows for at least one of the parties in the triangle, infidelity can encompass even purely emotional affairs that do not necessarily include sexual intimacy in all instances. Someone who maintains that a long time confidant is just "a good friend" may very well be involved in infidelity nonetheless by violating the exclusivity of another relationship with an innocent third person. One may be engaged in infidelity through dishonesty and unfaithfulness alone. Since communication is a key element to the success of any meaningful relationship, constant lying or omitting to speak the truth often rises to the level of infidelity. While many couples are able to rehabilitate their relationships by renewing communications after an episode of infidelity is exposed and improve themselves in the process, Lusterman warns that such recoveries are impossible with offending individuals who fail to admit their faults despite evidence to the contrary and who refuse to express any remorse for the harm that their actions have caused to others. The best one can do in these instances is to admit the obvious and move forward. Lusterman has a doctoral degree and a lengthy career record as a therapist. This concise book addresses the pain and shock that often accompanies the discovery of infidelity, often after lengthy periods of suspicion, and methods for coping with the hurt and recovering a sense of one's own self esteem. In an era in which many people rely upon the Internet to maintain regular communications and in which long distance relationships are increasingly common as a result, one needs to be prepared. Bad things sometimes do happen to good people. Lusterman's book is a valuable reference tool. It may even serve to promote a sense of healing for some people who have been victims of infidelity and allow them to forgive those who committed the acts of infidelity.
Great place to start.......2006-10-27
This book lays out a very tough subject in an approachable way. I felt much better after reading this guide. As the recently betrayed I was looking for so many answers, and this book pointed me in the right direction. My cheating spouse also found this a helpful, "easy" read.
The FIRST book you should read........2006-08-11
I think this book is great, it addresses the children involved in infidelity much more than any other book I have read. It also explores how people can react when you confide in them. I honestly think this is the very first book people should read upon discovering an infidelity. It can act as a great guide post keeping the situation from getting any worse than it already is. Pretty quick read, and VERY helpful.
Clear and Comprehensible.......2006-04-08
Dr. Lusterman comes to this subject with years of experience as a private practitioner and university level teacher in family therapy. This book is well written in language suited for professionals and the couples who seek their help in recovering from the trauma of affairs.
Need help understanding?.......2005-05-13
I bought this book to help me understand and put perspective on my marriage. Last year I had an affair and told my husband. We both had a hard time. He couldnt understand why I did what I did, and neither could I. We had been married for 10 years and together for 13. After a few months he went and had an affair with a mutual friend. I couldnt understand and have spend the last year trying to understand and get through it. It was totally eating me up/ I know I did the exact same thing and several times more than he did. I was so hurt by the betrayal. I ordered this book and read it in 2 days. It had really helped me understand why I had an affair to begin with. I was trying to replace the romance I thought was missing. It gave good insight into what leads to the breakdown of a marriage and how to prevent it. I could have used this information a year ago. It also spoke of retalitory affairs. It shed some light on how my husband was feeling and how bad I had hurt him. After reading this book I was finally able to sit down and talk to him about everything that happened without either one of us getting mad and screaming. We are working on building trust and with the help of the knowledge we got from this book, I have faith in us. I would recommend it to anyone who is hurting like I was.

Authentic, yet accessible........2007-03-02
I bought this book while I was in Nepal, knowing that I would miss the food when I come back to the States. It seems that the recipes are for the most part pretty authentic, similar to dished that I had in Nepal (momo's, various dal dishes, various veggie curries, roti). The ingredients are usually available in Indian grocery stores here, and
if an ingredient is hard to find, the book provides alternatives.
Like other reviewers have noted, this book doesn't have pretty pictures or beautiful cover. So, if you are looking for eye-candy, I don't recommend it. But if you are looking for good, accessible recipes on a rarely-written-about-in-the-English-language cuisine, I recommend this little cookbook!
Pictures are not needed to improve this cookbook!.......2003-08-27
I'm really writing this review in response to the previous. Nepali cooking is not about PRESENTATION---it is about TASTE! Nepali cooking, unlike so much American cuisine, sometimes looks unappealing until one takes their first bite, then wow!! If you really need you food to look attractive and 'just like the pictures' then this is not for you, stick with box mixes and Betty Crocker. If you are looking to make something different and special, then this edition is a dream! I cannot say enough good things about this book.
Yum!.......2003-05-30
I actually bought this book in Nepal after serving for 2 yrs there as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I knew I'd get a hankering for some home cooked Nepali specialties once I got home. I haven't made the majority of the recipes in it, but it was certainly worth the cost of the book for the ones I have made, especially the spicy fried pork cubes which I make quite often. Kasto meetho lagyo!
Try something new.......2002-07-08
This is an excellent cookbook for people who want to use new techniques and recipes in their kitchen. Nepali food offers an interesting array of spice combinations and food preparation, including sun-drying and curing. The Pan-Fried Asparagus and Potatoes is an excellent vegetarian dish, as is the Sun-Dried Lentil and Vegetable Balls with Potatoes. The Marinated Lamb Kebobs are great for grilling; try the Gundruk soup if your culinary spirit is bold and borderless. This book is well worth its modest price tag, and I recommend it to my friends who like Indian and Asian cuisine.
Authentic Nepali Cooking.......1999-11-09
My Nepali friend says the book does good representation of Nepali cooking although there were a few recipes she couldn't recognize. There are traditional Nepali dishes along with Indian and British-influenced ones (e.g. chop). This is not for people who care about pretty pictures, but for people like me who would rather have MORE RECIPES.

encyclopedia of nepali food!.......2007-09-16
"Taste of Nepal" is truly an encyclopedia of Nepali cuisine with a wealth of popular and specialty Nepali dishes from "momos" to "Raajkhaani Taareko"! It is a great book for young Nepalese like me studying in the US. I used to have to call up my aunts living in the US and ask, "How do I make tama-aloo tarkari like Ma used to make in Kathmandu OR What masala aren't you supposed to put in eggplant?" Now, I've got a reference book right in my kitchen. I would highly recommend the book to anyone delving into Nepali cuisine for the first time or to those like me who wished they had paid more attention to their mothers/grandmothers in the kitchen.
A 'must' for any serious international cookbook collection.......2007-09-08
Finally, a cookbook devoted entirely to Nepalese cooking which offers a range of classic dishes adapted for American kitchens and equipment. History, discussions of Nepalese cuisine, and introductions to each dish which offer serving tips and insights - as in a Spicy Stuffed Eggs, compared to Deviled Eggs and advised to serve at room temperature by itself - makes for a cookbook clear in instruction and approach. No color photos - but the easy recipes don't need them. Access to a spices shouldn't be a problem either, as most - ground cumin, chopped cilantro, ground coriander and fresh ginger, for example, are readily available in American markets. Highly recommended: a 'must' for any serious international cookbook collection: there's simply nothing like it on the American market.

fantastic!.......2007-08-22
With several dozen cookbooks on our shelves, my wife and I are fairly critical of new additions. This one definitely passes with flying colors. Pathak has included the little details that make shopping, cooking and eating such a delight. Not only do you get Nepali recipes in exquisite detail (an extremely rare occurence in and of itself) but you come to learn much about the country, its people and its customs. I highly recommend this book to any foodie or otherwise.
Excellent Book on Nepali Cuisine.......2007-08-20
This is an excellent and most thorough book on Nepali Cuisine published to date. It includes recipes of Nepali dishes from all over the country. The recipes include ingredients or substitutions commonly found in regular grocery stores, which makes it extremely easy to prepare the dishes. Definitely, a must have for people liking Nepali food.
Hey Foodies - looking for something different?.......2007-08-11
Taste of Nepal is a great new book that's easy to use. The author gives helpful hints on where to find unusual ingredients even offering alternative names or easily found substitutes so you don't have to be afraid you won't be able to find the right ingredients. The planned menus at the back are helpful for first timers and the chutneys are really tasty even paired with western foods.

Book Description
The Libellus of the Carolingian monk Walahfrid presents a first history of the Eucharistic liturgy, with special reference to topics such as fasting, frequency of communion, and arrangement of sections of the mass. Walahfrid also examines the origins of certain liturgical actions in baptism, traces the development of hymnography, and considers the etymology of various terms for church architecture. Walahfrid's unusually explicit citation of sources makes his work of particular value to the modern historian. This translation is the first into modern English. The commentary establishes the place of the language and argument in the development of early writings on the liturgy, while also relating it to the wider context of non-liturgical writings from the Fathers to mid-ninth century. The author's detailed examinations of Walahfrid's sources--historical, legislative and literary--show the lines of transmission of texts and their availability in the Carolingian period.
Book Description
Twentieth-Century Type surveys the significant issues that have shaped the history and evolution of typography and graphic design, showing how current typographic trends are part of a continuously changing movement that can be plotted through the decades. Generously illustrated with over three hundred examples-more than two hundred of which are in color-the book charts significant topics including the arrival of mass-production; the birth of the art director; the appearance of the grid (and its subsequent rejection); the coming of non-print media; and the launch of the Macintosh computer and its ushering in of a new generation of designers enfranchised by digital technology. This revised edition of a fundamental work brings the story up to date with new text and images covering type on screen and, in particular, type for the internet. Combining an assessment of the culture of experimentation in contemporary typographic design alongside a clear presentation of the field's historical context, the book is an informed and accessible source for all students of design and for designers needing an expert overview of typography.

great reference.......2007-06-23
This book is one of my favorites as far as type books. It is a great reference and the layout is easy to navigate.
Great Overview of the 20th Century.......2005-09-30
This is a great book containing a very good overview of the 20th century changes in typography. It covers everything from pre-art nouveau to postmodernism. A good resource for any design or typography library. My only complaint is that Blackwell waxes a bit too poetic on 1990's postmodernism. Also, they used a tight-fitting Helvetica for the body copy - so reading it takes some effort.
This is certainly worth having in your collection.

A Reader.......2002-09-07
I commend the author for being able to tell her story in such an honest, no holds barred way. It must have been difficult to relive her life of substance abuse and now living with a disability. This is a must read for families who has family members involved in drugs. It is helpful in a way of understanding the many stages of substance abuse. (Again,a must read)
I thank God she's alive.......2002-08-21
The courage it took to overcome such a catastrophe and write in such a vivid and understanding style, this exceeds all of my thoughts and images of a person being brought up in a dysfunctional family. Ms. Chapman is one of the lucky ones, who was able to learn early, although the hard way, as she say, never-the-less, in time. Many others are not so lucky. This book is informative to those who are involved with drugs in any way, from the user and sellers to those who are in the business of ceassation and rehabilitation. It is also helpfel to those who are dealing with the physical and emotional problems of paralysis

A story that certainly tugs at the heart strings. After reading this book of memoirs, it raises the question for many woman on the professional level. What would make you, after a life of not being exposed to the street life and substance abuse at this level, sample a drug such as crack cocaine that would eventually hook you? It has opened my eyes and got me to thinking, could something like this happen to me?
A Reader.......2002-06-30
A candid story that examines substance abuse and what a woman of color faces after receiving a disability. This true story is heartwrenching and makes me think as a woman in my forties, would I become weak enough to try drugs at a time in my life I should be established and enjoying it. The author makes me think. Could this happen to me?
