Book Description
There is no such thing as a good night. Maybe, as you fall asleep, you can hide away in dreams. Or so you'd like to think. Because, as every child knows, there are bad dreams. And bad dreams are a glimpse into the real world - where the monsters are. And the things in your nightmares that are worse than monsters: the creeping black memories that can bring fear and pain and blood. Even here, today, tonight ... in the most ordinary of homes, and against the most ordinary people, the terror will strike. An old man will tell his last ghost story... A young family will encounter a deathless horror... And the Doctor and his friends will uncover the terrible secret of the Deadstone Memorial.

Very British...right down to the Hob Nobs.......2007-02-12
This is the first Who book, I've read regarding Doctor 8. The story reads like a classic ghost story, and moves fast enough to keep the reader interested. I think this book would have made a good episode for the show, but the ending prolly would not have translated well to television.
The only complaint are the Doctor's characteristics, and I am not sure if you can blame the writer.
Doctor Number 8 is Earthy and very British. I do not mind the Earthy, however the British stuff from the jelly babies to the Hob Nobs seemed forced, and even out of place. There is a point in the book, where he says something along the lines of "Let's break out the Hob Nobs!" This came dangerously close to product placement.
If anyone, saw the Paul Mcgann movie, when he pulls the jelly babies out of his pocket, than you will know what I mean by forced.
Maybe if I had read other books regarding Dr. 8, it wouldn't not seem force, otherwise I think this would be a good book to give to a first time who fan
Superb!!!.......2007-01-29
This is one of the best DW novels I've ever read! It is superb! The writing is brilliant--funny, scary, adventurous, and action-packed. The plot is perfect. It all fits together so well. This is the best novel I've ever read with the 8th Dr. I highly recommend this one to any DW fan! Mr. Baxendale did a fantastic job. Get this one!
Eighth Doctor Gothic.......................2006-02-13
This is a well paced, well crafted and quite eerie story, and draws the reader in and does not let go. Baxendale captures actor Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor quite well and all of the other characters are well crafted and fleshed out as well. High on the "creepy" factor and suspenseful, this is an exceptional entry into the Eighth Doctor series, and I highly recommend it.
I love this book!.......2005-09-09
It has a great plot, good characters, and believable scenarios that could have been in the show. Great book! I wish they would put these books in normal bookstores. None of this, "We had one Doctor Who book, but it didn't sell." I hate that. Please ask your local bookstores to put these books on the shelves.

Superb Anthology of Urban Fantasy.......1999-10-15
This is an amazing book. Windling has created a shared universe in which Faery has returned to the modern world. However, it's not all happy elves frolicking with humans. The city/cities where Faery have appeared no longer support technology really, and the elves can be right bastards. It's gritty, realistic (for fantasy), and the stories tend to be incredibly well written. This is, in my mind, a classic urban fantasy novel. If you like Delint, you'll love this.

Great Book!.......2006-06-27
This is really a great book. If you don't like the way you look, have self-esteem issues, fears, or depression (all these may be caused by a poor body image), read this book.
Thomas Cash teaches you step by step how to overcome this crippling illusion and discover the beautiful person you are meant to be.
I would highly recommend this book.
Wow.......2006-04-26
I never thought that I would try using something like this workbook, but I'm glad that I purchased it. It's an easy book to read and understand and the exercises have been very helpful so far. It isn't for JUST people with weight issues, but people who are dissatisfied with their facial features, thinning hair, height, etc. Highly recommended for anyone with problems with any physical features.
A Body Image Wonderland.......2005-10-05
I have found this workbook to be very thorough in professionally addressing the issues of body image for a variety of people. It provides a positive reference tool to those who seek greater self-confidence, self-awareness, and self-esteem.
A MUST for Anyone with a Bad Body Image.......2005-08-02
I found this book to be one of the most helpful books I've read on overcoming body image issues. Everyone has body image issues to some extent. Others, like me, could have received many advanced degrees and done great things in the world had they successfully channeled bad body thoughts into something productive; like accepting oneself and learning to honor the body (and genetics) given to you. This book walks readers through a number of exercises designed to help first return to the core reasons (and identify humiliating public experiences) leading to a negative body image. The book then goes on to help the reader come to grips with their own expectations and realities surrounding their body image. My nutritionist is now "prescribing" this book to all of her patients. I highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with never feeling fully comfortable in the skin you're in.
A Great Workbook!.......2002-07-26
I never thought workbooks really work. I am on Step 6 in this book, and I am really beginning to notice a difference. I still have a negative body image, but I'm beginning to realize how much of my problem is related to my thoughts as opposed to my actual body. This book speaks to me on a very personal level, and has helped me realize that several people struggle with the same problem I do. I don't think I'll be totally cured by the time I finish the book, but I do think I'll improve my body image each day by practicing the steps in the book. It's a long process, but I truly believe this book will help me learn to love my looks!
Book Description
Revised and updated, a compact guide to the beverage that keeps us running.
A freshly updated edition of the best introduction to one of the world's most popular products, The Coffee Book is jammed full of facts, figures, cartoons, and commentary covering coffee from its first use in Ethiopia in the sixth century to the rise of Starbucks and the emergence of Fair Trade coffee in the twenty-first. The book explores the process of cultivation, harvesting, and roasting from bean to cup; surveys the social history of café society from the first coffeehouses in Constantinople to beatnik havens in Berkeley and Greenwich Village; and tells the dramatic tale of high-stakes international trade and speculation for a product that can make or break entire national economies. It also examines the industry's major players, revealing how they have systematically reduced the quality of the bean and turned a much-loved product into a commodity and lifestyle accoutrement, ruining the lives of millions of farmers around the world in the process.
Finally, The Coffee Book, hailed as a Best Business Book by Library Journal when it was first published, considers the exploitation of labor and damage to the environment that mass cultivation causes, and explores the growing "conscious coffee" market and Fair Trade movement.
Customer Reviews:
Life's little pleasures!.......2006-06-02
The coffee can cover attracted my attention, as did the handy take-to-cafe dimensions of The Coffee Book, plus I was pleasantly surprised by the contents. Not your usual non-fiction reader, the ample visuals helped hold my highly caffeinated short attention span. Learn more about your beloved legal stimulant and enjoy it even more!
Fascinating Book on History of Coffee.......2006-05-30
Fascinating book on the history of coffee, well written and style that flows makes the stories easy to follow . You find yourself winding through time and all the crazy social ramifications coffee has had on a variety of cultures - including European and American. Highly recommend for coffee drinkers curious to know how the cup of coffee they drink and today's coffee houses came into being.
The Coffee Book: Anatomy of an Industry from Crop to the Last Drop, Revised and Updated Edition.......2006-05-24
This is a must read for anyone who works with or loves drinking coffee. If you're looking for a crash course in the history, economics behind or current politics of the coffee industry, look no further!
Yawwwwwwn..........2004-01-07
I had hoped to read a thoughtful and measured history of coffee/the coffee trade. Instead, I found The Coffee Book to be heavy-handed, one-sided and didactic. Big Business Bad! Imperialism and Colonialism responsible for the Ills of the World! I had to force myself to finish it, and recently sold it for 50 cents at a garage sale. I feel a wee bit guilty; I think that the buyer paid too much...
Boy, what a disappointment THAT was........2003-06-05
Here I thought I was getting a book having something to do with coffee, all I got was a militant greenie screed against any business bigger than a lemonade stand.
Coffee makes rare and infrequent appearances in this book, which was written to reveal the evils of colonialism, how terrible slavery was, how underpaid Third World workers are, how awful America is in just about every way possible and to harrangue readers with straight doctrinaire party-line anti-business anti-WTO liberal international geopolitics. Coffee's just a stage prop for the authors' political rantings.
The authors clearly know nothing about coffee itself apart from the geopolitical ramifications of its trade as a commodity, what there is in the book pertaining to actual coffee is perfunctory, sketchy and cribbed from far better books.
Even on the book's real subject, which is to serve as a tract for liberal free-trade politics they can't get their facts straight. They mindlessly repeat the canards about Starbucks "imperialism" and how they're driving all independent shops out of business. Bushwa. Every study that's been done shows that wherever there's a Starbucks established, local coffee shops thrive and business for everyone goes up.
If you're into reading in-house literature for the free trade movement this book won't challenge your prejudices. But if you want to know something about coffee you won't learn it here.
Book Description
Tea is a beverage with roots all over the globe, from English tearooms to the mountains of Tibet. This exquisitely illustrated volume leads readers on an investigation of the many faces of tea: a mythic plant, a ceremony, the cause of wars (remember the Boston Tea Party), and ultimately one of the world's favorite beverages. The Book of Tea provides a comprehensive history and background of the beloved ritual of tea, providing photographed accounts of tea farming, tea barons and, teatime, and capturing the various tastes and nuances of teas from around the world.
This book, based on the original Flammarion title The Book of Tea, is now edited and brought up to date.
This book acts as both a guide to the appreciation of tea and a travel guide to the regions responsible for the production of tea, including Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. Anyone who loves tea will be delighted by the chance to delve into the magnificent photography and descriptive writing of The Book of Tea.
Customer Reviews:
Art Culinary, Historic, Photographic, and Legendary.......2006-03-28
THE BOOK OF TEA is in every way a superlative volume! Rarely has a topic as seemingly simple as tea resulted in a more comprehensive and fascinating excursion into the history of the leaf, of the myths and legends surrounding the leaf, the manner in which tea evolved as a drink, as a commodity, as an instigator for battles, and as a means by which gentility is measured.
Authors Alain Stella, Gilles Brochard, Nadine Beautheac, and Catherine Dozel have joined to provide essays on every conceivable aspect of the art of tea drinking and the results are a compendium of the influence of this popular drink in every part of the world where partaken, grown, and appreciated. The writing is skilled, informative, laced with both humor and intrigue, and fills in a lot of spaces in world history that haven't been explained as well in most other history overviews.
Couple these fascinating essays and forays with a wealth of old photographs of tea services from the most basic of cultures to the most elegant of formal tea parties, with drawings and paintings and prints that focus on the growth and art of tea, and then top it off with a series of new photographs by Marc Walter of contemporary settings of tea as still life and as celebratory images of tea plantations to tea in pots and cups, and you get an idea of how extensive this book is. The design of the book (from Flammarion) is stunning. This is a fine art book as well as a most informative resource about one of the staples of our civilization. Highly Recommended! Grady Harp, march 06

handy reference great for kids.......2007-06-09
this little book is perfect to take along on a trip or picnic to identify trees. lots of information in an easy to understand format, especially for kids but not bad for the adults either.
Very good and inexpensive book.......2002-01-15
I foun this one a very good book, it doesnt have any photos, but color illustrations are very descriptive and useful.
Its a must have because it covers all kind of trees, even some palm and cacti.
You wont find any problem to identify any tree, differences are very well noted on this book.
I give it four stars because it doesnt have an overview of trees forms, it only shows leaves, thorns, fruits, but not the tree form and dimensions.

This book is an excellent choice for anyone aspiring to become a successful desktop-publishing professional. In fact, it's the guide, long respected in the desktop-publishing community, and this fourth edition has more examples of good and bad designs than ever.
Parker and Berry first discuss essential design concepts such as relevance, proportion, consistency, contrast, restraint, and attention to detail. Next the authors teach you about basic tools for organizing layouts: grids, columns, gutters, headlines, kickers, captions, bullet lists, and pull quotes, to name a few. They delve into the intricacies of typography and font families, highlighting such concepts as type size, alignment, and leading and kerning. Next you learn about the use of white space and about rulers and accents such as borders, boxes, drop shadows, and bleeds. The authors discuss illustrations, clip art, backgrounds, charts, diagrams, tables, and maps and advise you on positioning those elements on a page. There's also a lot of information on selecting, resizing, and placing photographs. A full-color chapter illustrates how to choose color and use spot color, full color, and duotones.
At this point the authors move from theory to hands-on projects--you apply the design concepts that they have already put forth. You learn about the appropriate design, graphic, and text elements for newsletters, ads, catalogs, and other business correspondence. Each chapter in this section offers plenty of illustrations and ends with a checklist of reminders that you can refer to as you design.
Especially useful are chapter 12, which features common design mistakes along with illustrations and explanations of what's wrong, and chapter 13, which highlights redesigns of poorly produced publications. The latter is a before-and-after glimpse of designs of almost all types of publications, from newsletter to survey. These two chapters drive home succinctly and with great visual impact every point of design that the authors have previously discussed. Finally, the appendix offers extra tips on printing in color, and choosing image databases, paper, and service bureaus.
The authors don't refer to the Windows or Macintosh operating systems or to any software programs. The understanding is that you will learn how to use your software tools elsewhere and consult the book for elements of design. That's a reasonable goal, as the authors maintain a clear, concise tone and offer many tips that are tangential but still relevant to the subject matter. For example, the chapter on type has a short sidebar on the difference between kerning and tracking and a longer sidebar on font substitution. All in all, this book functions well as both a how-to manual for beginning designers and as a design reference for more advanced designers. --Kathleen Caster

Customer Reviews:
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-09-05
Are you discovering the challenges of desktop publishing? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Roger C Parker, has done an outstanding job of writing the sixth edition of a book that has been in print for 16 years, which is for those who want to make the most of their publishing investment.
Parker, begins by exploring the organizational tools you'll use in creating your published projects. Then, the author discusses in some detail the rules you must follow when selecting and arranging type. Next, the author explores the graphic page elements that are used in conjunction with type, to highlight and enhance the printed word. The author then shows you how to choose graphic elements and position them on the page for maximum effect. He continues by focusing on the techniques of designing a range of documents from newsletters to business communications to coupons. Then, the author discusses planning and design techniques that are important for any larger project. He then lists and illustrates the most common errors that sabotage otherwise effective designs. Finally, the author takes a look at some sample documents that are riddled with errors, while others are teetering on the brink of success; and, shows you how they can be improved, through the application of basic design concepts and a smattering of common sense.
This most excellent book has grown over the years to become the "Bible" for many students and publishers. More importantly, the best part of this book is that it will encourage you to learn while practicing your craft.
Excellent guide to what works and what doesn't..........2006-06-13
If you do anything with print or web media (aka desktop publishing), you probably know how easy it is to make mistakes and produce amateurish results. Looking Good in Print (6th Edition) by Roger C. Parker gives you the background and practical advice you need to start, well... looking good in print.
Contents:
Part 1 - Elements Of Design: Getting Started; Tools of Organization; The Architecture of Type; Building Blocks of Graphic Design; The Art of Illustration; Working with Photographs
Part 2 - Putting Your Knowledge To Work: Publications; Advertisements; Sales Material; Business Communication; Response Devices - Forms, Surveys, and Coupons; Designing Large Documents and Publications; Common Pitfalls; Redesign; Designing Documents for Web Distribution
Appendix; Prepress Tips and Techniques
Index
Any book that makes it past the 2nd edition is one I usually figure has stood the test of time, and must have something to offer. This book definitely fulfills that. It starts off with the basics of fonts, lines, alignment, and all those things that you probably just take for granted. There's a real science behind it, and Parker does a good job of clearly explaining it. But rather than just dealing in generalities and theory, he applies the knowledge to real areas of writing. Part 2 is valuable both for the explanation of how things should be done, as well as visual examples of how things go wrong. Unless you can see "what's not right", it's often hard to know why something would be considered a good practice. There's an abundance of example layouts and samples to illustrate his points, and you'd be hard pressed to find this much quality information in a single source anywhere else.
This will be a book I'll keep close at hand when I do my writing assignments. I'm normally more focused on content rather than form, but knowing what an editor might do to your work (both good *and* bad) can help you make sure that you come out looking polished, and that your content doesn't get lost in the layout.
Essential Resource For Print Design.......2006-05-09
'Looking Good in Print' by Roger Parker is an absolute must have for anyone working with print media and how it travels from the production house to the reader/end-user. Now in its 6th Edition, this guide provides essential advice, tips, and tricks from someone in the know who has been working with said topic for over a decade and a half.
Discussion in this book revolves around layouts, design, working with images, text, and how to output content itself in the wisest and slickest way possible.
For anyone that works with the design of laying out information in Print form (live or online), this book is an absolute best buy!!
***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Covers the latest potentials of desktop design........2006-04-14
The sixth updated edition of Roger C. Parker's LOOKING GOOD IN PRINT tops fifteen years in print with another edition addressing the latest potentials of desktop design. From creating professional-quality letterhead and business cards to learning how to print Internet documents, advice for desktop publishers assume no special program or experience but survey different design pitfalls, how to work with large documents, and how to create designs which 'wow'. Design tips apply to either PC or MAC users alike and are packed with techniques and tips that avoid the common pitfalls.
Practical advice for print and web.......2006-01-26
I like this book because it not only covers the technical side of print and web work, but it also covers style and to some degree content. I like how the author encourages the reader to reel the design elements in. All to often the lure of the design pallette becomes too tempting and the design overshadows the content. This book will have your design complementing the content, which is how it should be.
