Book Description
With the help of Detective Poirot, mystery writer Ariadne Oliver must solve a murder from her past--before the tragic piece of history repeats itself.
Whodunit? The question is posed of mystery writer Ariadne Oliver. This time it isn't asked by her readers, but rather detective Hercule Poirot. And the unsolved crime is from Oliver's own dark past.
"Christie...cozier than ever...in a lethal way, of course." (Library Journal)
Download Description
"E-book exclusive extras: 1) Christie biographer Charles Osborne's essay on Elephants Can Remember; 2) ""The Poirots"": the complete guide to all the cases of the great Belgian detective.
""The Ravenscrofts didn't seem that kind of person. They seemed well balanced and placid."" And yet, twelve years earlier, the husband had shot the wife, and then himself - or perhaps it was the other way around, since sets of both of their fingerprints were on the gun, and the gun had fallen between them. The case haunts Ariadne Oliver, who had been a friend of the couple. The famous mystery novelist desires this real-life mystery solved, and calls upon Hercule Poirot to help her do so. Poirot is now a very old man, but his mind is as nimble and as sharp as ever and can still penetrate deep into the shadows. But as Poirot and Mrs Oliver and Superintendent Spence reopen the long-closed case, a startling discovery awaits them. And if memory serves Poirot (and it does!), crime - like history - has a tendency to repeat itself.

What the Dog Noticed.......2007-07-29
"Elephants Can Remember" does not read like a typical Hercule Poirot mystery. Agatha Christie's famed detective is drawn into an old case by his friend, the amateur sleuth and mystery writer Ariadne Oliver. The case involves what was apparently the double suicide of a loving husband and wife, and the concern that these past actions might have left a horrible impact upon their children.
The story switches between the findings of Ariadne Oliver and Hercule Poirot as they each go in search of 'elephants' who might remember what happened around the time of the accident, because after all, an elephant never forgets. While there is no definite evidence as to what happened, there are those who have never accepted the double suicide theory because they couldn't answer the question why. But with Poirot and Mrs. Oliver working together, a long-unspoken truth is certain to be uncovered.
"Elephants Can Remember" is classic Agatha Christie, in terms of mystery. It's central mystery has a unique, if perhaps a little predictable, twist, the denouement of which is quite evenly paced and satisfactory. However, this might be one novel where the time period of the plot is more glaring than others. The prose is heavy-handed at times and one does get a little sick of all the mentions of 'elephants'. The characters are borderline two-dimensional and, therefore, the reader does not care about them, even if they are still interested in the mystery at hand.
Not Very Good, But Not Horrible Either.......2007-07-24
Definitely one of my least favorite Poirot books. As other reviewers have mentioned, the solution to this mystery is quite apparent about halfway through the novel. I sort of wanted to shake Mrs. Oliver and Poirot and ask them how they could be so obtuse and not realize the solution. The quirks our beloved Poirot typically display are all gone here; all that is left is rather dry prose and a mystery that should have been shortened by about sixty pages. Having said all of that, it does make for a quick read that does not require much thinking. If you are looking for a great example of a murder-in-retrospect book by Christie, I would recommend "Five Little Pigs" instead.
Ariadne Oliver's last case.......2006-07-21
Detective novelist (and Christie alter ego) Ariadne Oliver has been coaxed into attending a literary party, something she, like Christie, did not enjoy and avoided whenever possible. Mrs. Oliver's experience at this one would ensure that it would be a long time before she attended another. An overbearing woman, Mrs. Burton-Cox manages to corner the author cross examine her about her goddaughter, one of many Mrs. Oliver has managed to acquire through the years. And now that the young woman, Celia, is quite grown up, one with which Mrs. Oliver has quite lost touch. It seems that Celia and Mrs. Burton-Cox's son are engaged, or will soon be, and Mrs. Burton-Cox wants to know if Celia's mother killed her father or did her father kill her mother. Mrs. Oliver was quite shocked by the rudeness of the encounter and troubled about what to do about it so she contacted her friend, Hercule Poirot, for guidance in the matter. Soon the pair, each in their own unique way, begin to tackle the problems, re-establishing contact with Celia, investigating the old tragedy and finding out just why Mrs. Burton-Cox is so insistance on knowing the answer.
For fans of Ariadne Oliver this is a particular treat, giving the reader more information into her (and perhaps Christie's) personal life, than any previous stories. It is interesting to see Oliver's and Poirot's different approaches to investigation, even to the point of different interpretations of what the actual problem is.
This is not the cleverest mystery that Christie ever wrote, nor even the best written but it is a very enjoyable one none the less and is a definite must read for any Poirot or Oliver fan.
Another Excellent Poirot Mystery.......2006-05-31
When Adriane Oliver, noted crime author, is asked if she knows great whether her God-daughter's mother killed her father or vice versa, she enlists the help of the great Belgian slueth, Hercule Poirot to uncover the truth of a strange double suicide (or was it murder) from the past.
Through a series of interviews, often revealing conflicting views on the same events, Ms. Oliver and Poirot reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the deaths in question. Personally, I enjoyed this book. Christies narrative is top notch and the solution to the mystery is neatly tied up and intuitive. I tought Christie did an excellent job of taking the reader from point A to point B and all the way to the end. Little clues were dropped along the way, as well as a few blind turns. As always, Christie's characters are interesting and well-written. My only complaint, and its a minor one, is that the solution was a bit predictable. Not necessarily a bad thing.
Egregiously Bad, Monumentally Boring, and No Mystery.......2005-10-24
This must be the worst Agatha Christie book ever. It's her very last Hercule Poirot novel, and one can see that the writer is very old by now (82). There is no freshness left in her prose; it is stale, predictable, corny, and generally trashy. As other reviewers have said, the material contained here would barely be enough to sustain a short story. To make a full-length novel out of this really is ridiculous. The book fails at what normally is Agatha Christie's greatest strength: the plot and the denouement. With dozens of pages left to go, the reader *knows* the solution! Unheard of in the world of Christie; if for nothing else, then for this the novel cannot be rated higher than 1 star. However, the characters and dialogs are boring and cliche-ridden as well, so the book has no redeeming qualities either. Nothing ever happens on the 200 pages of this book; no crime, no mystery, no real conflict among characters; it's all just endlessly boring talk, talk, and nothing but talk about the past. The only interesting thing, perhaps, is to contemplate the autobiographical hints Christie gives us in describing one of the novel's detectives, Ariadne Oliver -- a mystery writer. But these hints are only interesting because they throw light on our favourite writer, Agatha Christie -- they are not interesting in themselves and therefore do not improve the book's literary quality. It was excruciating to have to wade through the turgid prose of this book; this title cannot be recommended to anyone except extreme Christie enthusiasts.

This Body: A Novel of Reincarnation
ASIN: 1402200110 |
Book Description
If true love can travel across time, can true evil be far behind?
When the beautiful Dr. Nina Winston's patient Bucky Buckingham reveals his secret to her, she has to doubt him. Reincarnation? True love across four centuries? But Nina is fascinated and lets herself be drawn into the charming and vulnerable Bucky's tale and into his life. Through hypnotherapy, she meets his former identity, and in real life, she meets his former paramour. If Bucky did live before, is Constance Rawlings his reincarnated lover? A dangerous search begins for the truth behind predestined love, and Nina is caught in the middle of soaring passions and raging jealousies.
Peter Paul Rubens's painting, Venus and Adonis, which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is the inspiration for this fast-paced thriller set alternately between the seventeenth century in Antwerp and the present day in New York. A novel of intrigue and suspense, The Other Adonis is a tale of true love and murder, a mystery that takes the reader back in time to another world, with a resolution that will delight romantics and turn skeptics into believers.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-06-04
Bought this book used and it was already signed by the author. Frank Deford spoke at my local library. Never new a sports writer could write such fun fiction.
Even if you're not into reincarnation..........2004-04-07
This was a good book. Finished it in one weekend because I could not put it down; I had to find out what happened. There were more twists and turns than I was expecting after reading the inside flap description. Don't really like books about reincarnation, but this was a very interesting book. I liked the characters and the plot was more complex than I thought it would be. This was the first book I've read by Deford, and I'm looking forward to reading another.
Wonderful story!.......2003-02-14
I truly recommend this book. I gave it as a Christmas present this year to some friends who also loved it very much!!! You can't go wrong with this story even if you aren't a fan of reincarnation (which I'm not) you will still love the story and appreciate that it is well written.
Play it Again Bucky.......2002-08-14
An uniquely imaginative love story / mystery where science, religion and art collide with a more mystical world. Part new age, part time travel, threads of reincarnation mixed with art history. While the author presents us with some highly provocative and creative scenarios, he really doesn't "get" his women characters, whose reality seems to be either the pages of Cosmo or perhaps the fantasies of an adolescent. Specifically, do you know ANY women friends who think they have a fine butt?
Obvious flaws aside, the book did teach me a great deal about Rubens, and I think the story worked in a very peculiar and thought provoking way. Mr. Defore paints quite a landscape and sense of place, and has a distinctive perspective on happily ever after ....
Nicely written page turner.......2002-02-22
I had never heard of Frank DeFord. My father bought this book as a Christmas gift for my husband, thinking it would be about sports. I had no intention of reading it, but when you're home with the flu, what do you do? Well, you read for 7 hours straight because you can't stop. Even if the characters were a little bit two dimensional (not Nina and Hugh as much as Bucky and Constance), the story of love transcending lifetimes was intriguing and fresh. It has something for everyone--romance, action, mystery, mythology, history, spirited debate and religion. This is a love story above all, but it's a thinking person's love story.
My biggest complaint is that we never got to find out who Hugh and Nina were in their past lives--though after what they went through, I can understand them not wanting to open that can of worms. This book will make you wonder if you have found your soul-mate, or if they are half a continent away.

An informative and absorbing read for both medical practitioners and their patients, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer takes aim at "the breast cancer industry" with a barrage of thought-provoking ammunition.
The book is equal parts criticism and suggestion. Current health treatments, including HRT, receive serious condemnation, and authors John Lee and David Zava carefully provide plenty of medical research to back up claims that excessive estrogen is a main source of cancer-causing irregularities. While the names of all the different natural and synthetic hormones can get overwhelming for the lay reader, with perseverance your new vocabulary of terms like androstenedione, estradiol, and cortisol will enable you to communicate more effectively with your doctors. The authors credit these hormones not just with a role in cancer, but with culpability for everything from insomnia and acne to fatigue and migraines. A full chapter extols the virtues of natural progesterone cream, and urges women to order their own saliva tests for proper evaluation of their hormone levels.
Diet and exercise recommendations are simple, outlining reasons to limit fats, sugars, and meats while increasing vegetables and adding a multivitamin. These recommendations extend to adolescents and urge getting off the couch and beginning a gentle exercise program to women of all ages and in each stage of life. --Jill Lightner

Essential reading for all women.......2007-08-26
This is a well researched and well written book. Unlike many publications in this genre - it explains the science and provides the references for back-up.
The book is easy to read - even for the non-scientific - and has a clear message for all women in this age of artifical hormones and petro-chemical pollution.
Find an oncologist who will read this book.......2007-02-11
My mother had a double mastectomy and radiation. This happened because estrogen dominance led to osteoporosis, and that led to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Now she's been sentenced to 5 years of Tamoxifen. She read this book twice and went to her oncologist with the information. The doctor wouldn't even listen to her. Dr. Lee's knowledge about estrogen dominance, HRT, and progesterone cream will ring true for many women with a predilection to breat cancer, with breast cancer, with any type of cancer, or with any of the multitude of estrogen dominant conditions (allergies, autoimmune disorders like lupus and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, decreased sex drive, depression, foggy thinking, migraines, miscarriages, PMS, and strokes just to name a few!). If you have breast cancer- my advice is to read this book and then take it to your oncologist. If he/she isn't open-minded enough to read it, find another doctor. It could save your life. Also, for all who are suffering through pre-menopause or menopause, I highly recommend Dr. Lee's other books: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About PREmenopause: Balance Your Hormones and Your Life from Thirty to Fifty; What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause: The Breakthrough Book on Natural Hormone Balance.
Reader beware #2.......2006-03-28
My mother and father read this book and it enflamed them against the doctors who were trying to convince my mother that she needed to do something about her Stage II breast cancer. She was scared to death by what she read. Perhaps literally. While she was scared, her cancer progressed to Stage IIIC. We're not sure she's going to make it. She received three opinions regarding recommended treatment from some of the best hospitals/doctors in the U.S. Then the cancer spread to her breast bone area. She is finally following doctors orders, including chemo, and her tumors are shrinking. We pray it is not too late. I'm sure this book has some useful information, but my mother only showed me the scary bits--the things that made her wait. Too long? Who knows. Beware.
BOO!.......2004-09-16
This book will scare the bejesus out of ya, so make sure you're ready for the in-your-face reality this book offers. Are you ready to read about everything contributing to breast cancer from pesticides to plastic bottles? We're talking bug spray, plastic water bottles, beef, cow's milk + milk products, nail polish, polish remover, furniture, hair dryers, computers, and on and on. I was afraid to eat or touch anything for days! But the premise of this book isn't to scare but to educate you.
While this book focuses on progesterone and diet to ward off or control breast cancer from spreading, it also slams current drug treatments and drug companies, along with mammograms. The information in this book is exactly the opposite of what your doctor will probably tell you. But are you willing to bet your life that your doc really knows what he or she is talking about and not just repeating the widespread word of rich and powerful drug companies or manufacturers of mammography equiptment?
So if you're like me and have just recently found a lump in your breast, take some time to get used to the idea that you might have cancer. Then if you want to know the harsh reality about breast cancer, read this book. It might just save your life.
A book every loving husband must buy.......2004-08-24
If you love your wife and if you want her to be "All that she can be", then you must read this book. It will tell you what's going on with her and more importantly, if you can get her to read it, then you will have a healthy wife instead of one that slowly falls apart. Easy to understand and wonderful

Save Money & Eat Well.......2006-01-31
We all do it - buy too much of something just because the bigger container was a better buy. This book addresses that and even has an exercise to understand your food buying habits. A lot of the book is devoted to recipes to help you use that food surplus, but the book also gives shopping advice and helps you streamline your pantry.
I really like the Big Food Action Chart which helps match the food I have on hand with the recipes needing those ingredients. This is the book for anyone who hates to see those outdated supplies clogging up their pantry shelves and hates, even more, throwing such stuff away.
Customer Reviews:
Not detailed enough.......2005-05-31
I've had this book through 4 cats and kittens, and if you have a really healthy cat who never develops any illnesses, it's great. I find myself using the Cornell Feline Health Center online for my cats.
The diagnostic tree is just too vague, the descriptions of diseases are also too vague and there's just not enough information. Using a vet's resource center with a dictionary handy does you--and your cat--more good, especially if your cat has something really serious.
Not helpful enough.......2003-07-05
This book has a very serious omission on the subject of outdoor cats. The book does not mention at all that outdoor cats are in grave danger of attack by coyotes in many parts of the country. Coyotes are in places where many people wouldn't even expect them, such as in cities. There are precautions you can take to eliminate this danger or greatly reduce the chance of an attack. Unfortunately, this book does not list the precautions that should be taken. And by the way, bobcats will also be happy to kill a house cat and similar precautions would apply.
The only Cat Book I Have.......2000-06-08
This is a wonderful book. My wife and I have 7 cats and we received this as a gift from my in-laws. This is the only cat book we own and we look at it all the time. The book has great pictures of various cats acting out various behaviors, what a kitten should look like at a certain age, and even different parasites that a cat may get. Also included is a list of emergency situations and ways you can help your cat if he/she is injured. This is a great book no cat owner should be without.
Love This Book!.......2000-02-28
I find this book highly informative and well organized. I have 5 cats and own many cat books, but this one is by far the most referenced. I especially like the health reference section since I have not found this in any other books.
You don't need this one........2000-01-11
I expected more, and better, from the ASPCA. This book is so basic, much too elementary for anyone who already owns a cat. Really. In two years I've learned more from my cats than this book could tell me. The information level is cursory, and in some cases, spotty. It was published in 1992, so there's NOTHING here about breakthrough medications for flea and heartworm prophylaxis. The only good thing to say about this book is that the photographs are beautiful. Wish I could send it back and buy something more informative.

Book Description
Who does Pelé think are the greatest professional soccer players alive? David Beckham, Zinédine Zidane, Mia Hamm, Ronaldo, Diego Maradona? This beautiful book, which celebrates the centenary of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the governing body of international professional soccer, reveals his selection. Commissioned from some of the world's leading photographers, these portraits are surprising and unexpected. Unlike familiar sports books packed with action shots by anonymous news photographers, The FIFA 100 captures the very essence of athletic greatness. These arresting portraits reveal the athletes' strength and artistry of movement, and the book is a fitting tribute to all the players who have made the game so beautiful.
The book contains more than 100 stunning portraits by such well-known photographers as Marc Quinn, Patrick Lichfield, Norbert Schoerner, and Helena Christensen, biographies of each player and photographer, and forewords by Pelé and Sepp Blatter, the president of FIFA. It accompanies a touring exhibition of these pictures, organized by FIFA for its centennial year. AUTHOR BIO: Pelé, one of the greatest soccer players of all time, led his native Brazil to three World Cup titles and later played for the New York Cosmos. He was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Commitee in 1999. Sepp Blatter is the president of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the governing body of international professional soccer.

This is a bad joke.......2006-07-12
Please do not bother with this, the most incompetent list I have ever seen.
Don't bother.......2004-12-23
FIFA is all pomp and hubris, really, and though Pele is arguably the best player ever in this game his list is laughable. Where is Garrincha, with all due respect? Pele immediately reminds us that it is a list of the 100 greatest LIVING players, Garrincha having passed away in shocking poverty and utter destitution long ago. Where are Jairzinho, Tostao and Gerson then? They are alive, or so I am told... Incidentally, these three countrymen of Pele also played alongside him in the 1970 World Cup. Is omitting your teammates a gesture of courtesy? Other more laughable omissions include that of Marco van Basten because the Dutchman, it is rumoured, was too arrogant to pose for the camera.
Surely football/soccer is the most beautiful game there is, but FIFA is a very poor representative of it, being embroiled in politics and diplomacy, sacrificing excellence of the game for so called multiculturalism. Personally, I fail to see how inviting more undeserving teams to the World Cup final to be trampled on by the giants (Saudi Arabia and China being the two prominent examples in the 2002 World Cup) will help to boost the image of soccer in these nations. In that case, adding undeserving players and omitting famous legends to this list of 100 all-time-greatests does not help either.
The Best 100 ? Where ?.......2004-07-20
Sorry , but if you want to do a book called FIFA 100 , you must put there the Best 100 players ever , and not a put togheter to satisfy international market.
How can Brasil have only 14 players..and ...France 13 ....Italy 13....this is not right....Crazyyyy People who think this way.
You have to be kidding......Garrincha....Zizinho...Didi ....Gerson...out....Nakata , the Korena....in....pleaseeee.....that really makes me laugh.......Helooooo? Brasil a 5 times World Champion ...Penta Campeao.....
And not just that but who did this book was not Pele.....and yes..it was Blatter, using the imature Edson , because Pele would not do that....and got to Brasil...saying Iam sorry...the List was already done...I just selected a few players......Sorry FIFA ....you stink
Book Description
FIFA, the International Football Federation, celebrates 100 years of soccer with a beautiful gift book that every fan will cherish--the first official publication on the sport's history, and the most comprehensive and wide-ranging. It's filled with rare and breathtaking images, interviews with soccer's top personalities, and other material from FIFA's extensive archives.
FIFA has spared no expense in creating this lavish volume, which celebrates a century of soccer--and the care shows on every page. It's the fullest, most fabulous history ever of this global sport, beginning with the ancient ball games that were soccer's direct ancestors, moving on to the establishment of official rules (in a London pub in 1863), and continuing right to the present day. All the richness and diversity of this extraordinary sport come through in an examination of different styles of play, various stadiums throughout the world, the international media coverage, and the growing importance of women's teams. Money, politics, personalities, fan mania, the youthful players who are soccer's future--they're all here. Above all, there are the amazing pictures, which not only capture the excitement of the game (with players caught flying in midair, and even upside down) but also feature posters, images from magazines and newspapers, and paintings by soccer-loving artists. Like the sport itself, it's simply magnificent.

Put Back this Front Yard Book.......2004-02-26
I love elaborate front yard plantings, but this book just isn't the inspirational guide that Liz Primeau's similar "Front Yard Gardens: Growing More Than Grass" is.
It's a fairly pedestrian, utilitarian book, nothing special. The Primeau alternative actually conveys a sense of the excitement and adventure inherent in de-lawning your front, and the examples shown are more interesting than the bland gardens depicted here in Taunton's offering.
I've read through this once, then returned it to the library. "Front Yard Gardens" I bought, and I've read through it three times. Buy it instead. Do redo your garden, but don't expect Taunton's Front Yard Idea Book to inspire you.
Note: a 3 star ranking from me is actually pretty good; I reserve 4 stars for tremendously good works, and 5 only for the rare few that are or ought to be classic; unfortunately most books published are 2 or less.
Ohhhhh! Excellent!!.......2003-12-13
I can't begin to say how much I adore this book!! I'm telling you now, if you read this book from cover to cover & allow yourself to digest each & every picture, you'll never look at a front yard the same again. Literally, American is stuck in a rut. I look up & down my street, & all I see are blank, bland, boring lawns!! Wretch! This book has made me realize something that took me directly out of that silly, traditional mindset: I PAY AS MUCH FOR MY FRONT YARD AS I DO MY BACKYARD! This book has motivated me to "reclaim" my front yard for my own use, & I can't wait to have it all in & done! It won't be my neighbor's front yard anymore! It won't look like public domain anymore!!!
Practical ideas for real houses not magazine covers.......2003-11-12
A good-looking front yard isn't just a wise investment in your home, it's a gift to your neighborhood. Webber's book is packed with ideas for real families and real houses. For example, the book's chapter "Driveways and Parking" offers ideas on expanding a narrow driveway or parking spot, even parking bays and pull-offs!
Webber uses a logical, easy to follow pattern. First she gets us thinking about our goals for an area, then she provides reliable information, combined with Taunton's characteristically good photography.
All in all, the book's a good investment for any homeowner with a front yard.
Great ideas.......2003-06-17
My book is so filled with post-its marking which ideas I'll be emulating. It may take awhile, but it'll be worth it if my front yard ends up anywhere near as beautiful as some of these pictures. I'm looking forward to enjoying my front yard in a private garden setting, just like I enjoy my back yard. It's mine to enjoy, not to work like a dog on just for the neighbors benefit!
Editing to add - it is now three years after I originally posted this review. I used many of the ideas learned from this book, and it sparked many of my own! My front yard looks like a park, I love to look out my windows and enjoy. Even a walk to the mailbox has become a serene experience because of the lush gardens and plantings.
People drive through our neighborhood, stop in front of our house and I see them looking and pointing at different gardens, etc. We'll be selling our house to retire in a couple of years, and I feel confident that our place has tremendous "curb appeal" because of what I learned and implemented from this book.
Great primer, great pictures!.......2003-05-03
This is a really good first book on front yard gardens and has some excellent pictures. If you're thinking of adding a little life and color to your front yard, striving for some curb appeal or just plain tired of mowing the lawn, pick this up. Easy to read and written in a nice relaxed style, it's a good starter.
