Book Description
Dog's Life columnist Holly Winter has just landed a plum contract to write a book on Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge's legendary pre-World War II dog shows. Holly arranges to interview one of the last living participants in those fabulously opulent and exclusive shows: canine fancier B. Robert Motherway.
But there's something decidedly unsettling about the gracious old gent's imposing home with its acres of kennels. His dying wife wails piteously in an upstairs room, his servants are his sullen son and his downtrodden daughter-in-law, and his favorite German shepherd dog has an ill-bred snarl. Meanwhile, Holly's mail is laced with anonymous packages-old photographs, letters in German, and a brochure on pills for listless pooches.
Nothing makes sense until a garroted body is found in a nearby cemetery. Suddenly Holly and her Alaskan malamutes, Rowdy and Kimi, are on a seventy-year-old trail of deception, decadence, and death. And either they unearth the skeletons or join them.

Not one of my favourites.......2007-05-21
I truly enjoy the Dog Lovers Mystery series, but this book was not one of my favourites. I found it difficult following it, and there wasn't enough about the dogs to keep me interested either. Although we do see Rowdy and Kimi, they are almost in supporting roles. In the book Holly is doing research for a book on 20's and 30's dog shows and on the people that set them up. She uncovers an old Boston family that was involved with these shows, but she also uncovers a whole lot family secrets that get her and Rowdy into trouble. I will continue the series, but I hope that Conant gets back to the dogs in the next one.
one I never reread.......2007-02-27
Nothing to like in the characters here. Didn't like the characters, the setting, the mystery. All very negative in tone. A reader has to have some hope, some enjoyment, to keep going. The author has forgotten that in this book
Forced myself to finish it..........2005-06-07
I am a loyal Conant reader. I love all of her books but this w=one took a wron gturn. What happened here Susan? I hated this one! If this was your first time reading her books and you hated it, don't give up! I suggest The Wicked Flea. That one is my fav. I've also read this, Bloodlines, Black Ribbon, and one more that I cannot remember. Don't give up on her! This is the best series ever!!!!
Evil Breeding.......2001-08-21
Never have I disliked a main character as much as the woman in this book. The character was so self-centered, rude, arrogant and obsesssive about controlling her dogs that it interfered with the marginal plot.
For Alaskan Malamute Lovers Only.......2001-03-04
This is the only one of the series that I've read, and now I doubt I'll bother with the others. Conant has hung a bunch of red-herring plot twists and turns on a simplistic semi-mystery that in the end is nothing more than a guilty-family-secret story. Nazis, eugenics, dog shows in the thirties, a Rockefeller heiress, the Isabelle Stewart Gardner museum -- all turn out to be irrelevant to the story line....

Customer Reviews:
Well, Breeding Something, At Least.......2004-12-21
Shelby Parker used to work for the FSA. Now she is a private investigator. She has just been offered a case that could help her financially and get her practice firmly in the black. The job is for the FSA and involves looking for a missing person.
Shelby follows the leads and does some undercover work which eventually leads her to a medical facility that might be holding the object of her search. But why is she really on the case? What is really going on in the facility? Is she being played by the government? All of these and other questions are answered.
The plot is pretty good but nowhere near as dark as the back of the book makes it out to be. The end involves an unsupported revelation (usually taboo in mystery and suspense novels) but does offer a continuing thread for Wolfe's next book, Natural Selection. Shelby left the FSA at some point but the narrative gives differing time frames as to when it happened (I felt that was clumsy). I found no real suspense and the plot really was pretty mild. Shelby does not rally come off as the competent agent she is supposed to have been, more like someone playing at being an agent based on what they have seen on TV.
All in all I would not really recommend this book. It seems to have been at least one draft shy of being ready and the plot seems to have been set up to make as many characters female as possible (not really a bad thing but it seems forced here). Maybe her next book will be more finished but I don't think I will check it out.
Action, adventure, romance, suspense..........2004-06-08
Finally, a female action character who doesn't sound like a typical romance heroine! Shelby Parker knows how to think on her feet no matter how horrifying the circumstances. Finally, an action adventure with men who don't always have to take center stage! This is high drama, without the melodrama.
Breeding Evil is filled with remarkable characters - the women are refreshing in their strength without all of the uber-sexiness. Finally, powerful women you can admire for their brains, not their beauty. Their lives and actions intertwine in a fascinating read. This book has everything - treachery, suspense, super-technology and even a little bit of love interest.
mega action espionage thriller.......2004-05-16
After a decade of bouncing from one black op to another, Shelby Parker left the Federal Security Agency. Because she has no marketable private sector skills outside of sneaky surveillance, she opens up an investigative firm. Now six months since she left the government, Shelby is at the Denver FSA office wondering why handler Ethan Calder needs exclusively her to look into the disappearance of fifteen people connected to The Center for Bio-Psychological Research. Though more in line with the FBI mission, Ethan explains that this is not FSA sponsored, but he a concerned citizen worried about a close friend of his wife vanishing. Needing the money, Shelby accepts the case.
Shelby applies for work at the Center in order to get close to key researchers, Dr. Ruth Carson and Dr. Jonah Thomas. She quickly realizes she is not alone when she uncovers FBI agent psychiatrist Mac McRae working an inquiry from the inside. The two pool their efforts though it grates Shelby, who always works alone. As they work together under the covers and undercover, they must save a pregnant woman carrying a special genetically altered fetus who is the prototype of a future obedient soldier who will be sold to the highest bidder. That is if they live long enough to do so for even safe houses are unsafe.
Fans of espionage thrillers with no respite from the action once Shelby accepts the case will want to read this fast-paced tale. The story line moves so fast, the audience never is able to catch their breathe even when the heroic duo takes a sexual time out. Though the personal relationship between Mac and Shelby seems off-kilter, genre readers will enjoy this non-stop mega action thriller.

Finally Something New & Exciting!!!!.......2004-05-11
Ms. Wolfe has penned a book that has it all, and I mean all!! A little sci-fi (breeding a meta-human), paranormal (psychic abilities), suspense, action, and great characterization. There is even a little bit of romance but before you go ewwwww....it's very much a sideline storyline and no sex scenes to sidetrack you.
Shelby is not your typical female character. She is bold, strong, and very capable. She is out to rescue Shannon and her son Sam from "The Center" and nothing and no one will stop her from reaching her goal. She is a former FSA agent and she has been called back to perform this OP by her old handler. She is sucessful in the fact that she gets into "The Center" and manages to not only rescue Shannon, and Sam but also Zoe. Of course she dosen't just waltz in and waltz out, she uses her great ability at disguise and other things she learned while working for the FSA to make this happen and again this is not the end of the story. Add to this Mac a great looking Aussie that has become to her dismay a partner (she has issues about working with anyone, fact is she doesn't work with anyone at all and if that is not enough she finds herself in her sleep wrapping herself around him and finding him very yummy) he is also working the case from the side of the FBI. There is the added danger that comes from her old handler at FSA headquarters, her conversations seem to lead the bad guys right to her, she knows the Ethan could not possibly be the leak but she can't avoid the fact that the bad guys seem to be in the know as far as safe-houses and rescues. Who is the mole in the FSA? They need to find out before this person manages to ruin everything.
This was an extremly fast-paced read that managed to maintain it's momentum throughout the entire novel. I made the mistake of thinking it would be a great book to read on my way home from Germany. Well, it was in fact so good that I managed to drop my responsiblity of reading the map and my husband and I saw a little more of Germany then we planned! I can hardly wait for the next book by this author. For a debut novel this is strong and shows that Ms. Wolfe has great potential and she has quite the imagination as well. For an entertaining read pick up this book!
Great Book!!.......2004-05-11
What a great book...held my interest throughtout! Great characters & storyline...A can't put it down read!!

Customer Reviews:
Sorry. I couldn't finish it........2007-03-20
The book reads like mediocre fan fiction, which isn't that horrible in and of itself. I've read fan fiction much worse than this. The difference is that I read that fan fiction online FOR FREE. This book was not worth it's $25 price tag, especially for not being hard cover.
Most anyone even remotely familiar with vampires in pop culture should have some familiarity with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's probably also more likely that a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer would buy this book. As such, it was probably unwise for Miss Davenport to include certain elements in her book. If you don't know much about the Buffy tv series, then only one thing off this list will really strike you. But if you know Buffy, then this list should be pretty groan-worthy. And ALL of these items were present within the first 80 pages.
Things That Hint of Buffy
-A vampire named William who, before he became a vampire, was an awkward lovestruck man who wrote bad poetry.
-A vampire named Darla who seduces her prey.
-A young girl who seems supernaturally strong and fights vampires.
-The vampires are able to change their faces to either look like normal humans or to look "bumpy" in their true form.
-A bar owned and operated by a human for demons to hang out in.
As for Camila herself, I had a hard time finding any depth to her. She felt one dimensional, and I really didn't care what happened to her.
Then there's the editing, which isn't entirely the author's fault. Even the best writers make mistakes. That's what editors are for. It's a shared responsibility. Upon reading the first 80 or so pages of this book, I found so many typos I started to wonder if this publishing company hires free lance editors because I could sure as hell do a better job than this, and it'd be nice to get paid for it. Basically all the typos were the kind of errors one would find if someone just ran spell check in Word. Sure, all the errors were real words, but they were misused. Examples include incorrect homophones (two/too/to, there/they're/their), words that become other words when you remove, replace, or add a letter (through/though, wander/wonder), and missing words in sentences. It was very distracting, and reflects poorly on both the author and the publisher.
Finally, there were the portions taking place in different eras. The first 80 or so pages of the book were Camila's journal from when she first became a vampire in the year 1812. Honestly, all you needed to do was add some netspeak, and you could put it up as a modern-day LJ. The language did not match the time. The characters used colloquialisms that were not in place in 1812. For example, one of the characters said the word 'cool' to refer to something that was good. I assure you in 1812, if someone said the word 'cool' they would only be referring to temperature. Then in a later section, shortly before I stopped reading, the action was taking place in the 1400s. The characters kept saying 'sure' as an affirmative response to questions. "Do you want your husband here for the birth?" "Sure." Granted I'm no language expert, but I don't think that was proper for the period either. Those kinds of things were very jarring.
So yeah, not good. I congratulate Miss Davenport on getting published so young. It's a nice thing to put on one's resume, as long as prospective employers don't actually read the book. The other benefit of her being so young is that there's time to improve. She still has college ahead of her, and hopefully she will take some creative writing courses. Some authors are naturally good authors. Other authors can become good authors with help. She needs help.
Great Vampire Novel.......2006-05-09
Review: Camila, The Tale of a Vampire
ISBN: 1-4137-7583-7
Author: Kristen Davenport
If I were to choose one vampire novel to read (and study) it would be Camila-The Tale of a Vampire. It is an epic piece of fine work in this genre that captivates a reader through every one of the 327 pages. Ms. Davenport begins her work by a first person account of the transition in the early 19th century and chronicles the life, instead of chapters, dates are used-the initial mixed emotions finish with a resolute desire to kill in order to live as one of the living dead. Early I determined this section-and later the entire book-would be a good audio book as well as the content of a challenging screen play.
Ms. Davenport successfully makes the transition to third person and begins to organize the rest of her book by chapter-and there is an ingenious reason to do so concerning the fight that will ensue between good and evil. Within the pages there is a sexuality that gently invites you in up a point of border that is not crossed. This is done exceptionally well with just enough tease, emotion and description to lead a reader through a kind of eternal saga between a man and woman-between men and women. I was taken inside the mind of the author's excellent rendering of the psychology of the vampire life form, its extraordinary processes of training, knowledge and motivations. Not too slowly, not too fast, eventually the title character is structured to become a being without conscience and to the place where the two main characters became the most powerful of the set of monsters for a good while.
Seduction is used as well as it might be if vampires were real. Traps, innocently beginning an assortment of relationships-whether done in minutes or hours-until the victim is used to sustain perpetual youth across centuries of existence. Ms. Davenport displays a brilliant use of dream sequences that continues throughout the work until the final battle-but leaves that as only a possibility. I saw apocalyptic surges and precursors, with characters right out of kinship to Camila-it was evil versus evil, and good versus evil-scenarios in the world that actually happen of course. I was treated to diary entries form the 16th century, dream sequences that filled out the story line as events foretold from the depths of hell to places where demons gather to pursue every purpose of their evil master.
The intelligent work is a masterpiece of fiction, written with the serious reader in mind who enjoys a deep, character driven and surprising work of epic dimensions-so as to get your money's worth. The book obviously involved a great deal of hard work and good writing (the dialog is outstanding). Either it has been meticulously edited or the author suffers significantly less errors along the way than I do-perhaps than most of us do. The novel is written and finished smartly, thorough and well. It is a complete examination of vampires, evil, demons, demon hunters. Camila is a work of different settings, scenes, backgrounds-exceptionally well written, that added realism to my investment. I recommend the book as one readers of vampire and fantasy novels would not want to miss.

Customer Reviews:
Must Read for Women W/ADHD.......2007-05-21
Exceptionally valuable, helpful and heartfelt information. Every woman who has this quirky brain issue will find more self-acceptance as well as a good laugh and some well deserved peace of mind.
Needs to be re-written.........2006-12-29
This book is a disappointing hodge-podge compendium of works by various authors. The chapter on CFS/Fibromyalgia-ADD link could have and should have been a milestone work that catapulted the book and the authors to world recognition but they totally dropped the ball and missed a golden opportunity here. The parts of the book that are actually written by Nadeau are quite good (few though it may be) but everything else will leave you bewildered. Too bad. Maybe if they revise it and clean it up with a better editor I will be able to recommend it.
Great reference book .......2006-11-10
This book contains valuable info not easily found elsewhere, for women with ADD / ADHD. EXCELLENT questionaires for evaluation and self-knowledge. Discusses how hormones and hormone changes affect ADD. Also discusses frequently co-existing conditions and treatment strategies, as well as the empowerment that can come with a diagnosis of ADD / ADHD. This book reads like a textbook but is not as heavy as most. moves quickly along and is neatly divided into specific areas of interest.
Good AD/HD Resource.......2005-12-21
When I was first diagnosed as ADHD (emphasis on the "H"), I craved knowledge on the subject. I turned to this book and learned so much. However, true to my inattentiveness, I haven't actually FINISHED reading the book! It's one of those things that comes with so much information I can only absorb it in small doses. So I read the chapters as they become meaningful for me in my journey of coping with ADD. Eventually I'll finish the book. Especially meaningful has been the section of "Women in the Workplace".
I ultimately purchased the book so that I could have the liberty of making notes in the margins and taking the self-assessment test in the front of the book. This book is a good place to start if you're new to the world of AD/HD and how to cope.
Must Read.......2005-08-18
This book will be a validating reading experience for any woman who has AD/HD, not to mention those in her family who want to understand her better. The author breaks down the symptoms, perceptions and realities of AD/HD so that the reader can get a clearer picture of what AD/HD is for women and what can be done in order to improve their lives. There are many references included in the book so continued research and reading is made easy. Do not pass this book by - you'll miss out on some VERY important information that will change your life for the better.

Customer Reviews:
One of my most used/best loved cookbooks.......2007-08-17
I bought this book just before ETSing from the Army in 1999. After three years in Bavaria, I knew that one of the things I would miss most was the wonderful food.
Mrs. Youngkrantz does a fantastic job translating traditional German dishes for the American cook. She avoids hard-to-find ingredients. Everything in the book can be prepared with items you can buy in any supermarket, yet it all tastes completely authentic. I pull this one out for special occasion baking and for everyday suppers (I particularly love the Sauerbraten, prepared with a side of homemade Spaetzle). Anytime I get homesick for Germany, I know that I can turn to this book for, at least, a taste of what I miss.
The book is well organized and the recipes are set up in an easy to read format. They are usually contained to one page, so there's no flipping back and forth. The occasional anecdotes about German folklife are charming. I enjoy this cookbook so much that I have given copies as gifts.
4th Generation from (German) Luxembourg.......2006-08-28
Anything that I make from this book, except the creamy carrot and potato dish, was something my Father (4th generation) was perfectly satisfied with. (He has a dislike for milk.) My Father spoke German as a child, in New Riegel, Ohio. If you want a variety of salads, soups, casseroles, desserts; this book is for us. She has no "pie" as we know it. Her pizza could be made from the Onion Cake recipe, sans onions! Only one chicken recipe, though. Bouillon: I would reccomend the dry low sodium variety, needed for most soups. The cookbook is now well used - I've had it for 10 years, but, I find that I do tend to use my KitchenAud cookbooks that came with the appliances for breads and soups, now. Remember to put carrots in your spagetti recipe! (That is her ingredient.) And, brats: In boiling water, then brown!
It's Pretty Good.......2006-04-12
I like the home publishing and the really good home cooking. I DON'T like the plastic comb binding as they deteriorate and break too fast. I bought mine at a winery in north central Arkansas and paid too much there. But I am a sucker for German home cooking.
Excellent Book if you like German food.......2005-08-08
I bought an earlier edition of this book when I was stationed in Berlin back in the 80's. It was written by a German Woman who had moved to the US and could not easily find the ingredients her original German cookbooks called for. The goulash soup in this book is the closest I've ever come to the restaurants in Germany. This is not a professional chefs book. It was made for the home cook who wants to make dishes like they've had in Germany.
A delightful book.......2004-04-27
I bought this book at Milwaukee's Germanfest several years ago, and I consider it a lucky find. The quotes and information about German holidays and customs, are just delightful! And the recipes bring back many memories of time we spent in Germany.
It is worth getting the book for the brötchen recipe alone. We thought we'd never see good brötchen outside of Germany. Now we can make it at home!
I especially appreciated having this book when I was preparing holiday meals for my now-late German-born father-in-law. He was very pleased as well.
The recipes are easy to follow and use ingredients that are easy to find in America. The binding allows you to open the book and lay it down flat - very handy while you're cooking.

Somewhere in San Diego, nine cats, one canine, and two humans live in bliss, without a fur- or dustball in sight. In the colorful house that Bob (BobCat) Walker and his wife, Frances Mooney, have designed for pure feline pleasure, this peaceable kingdom is in constant, fetching flux. Cats into Everything, Walker's follow-up to The Cats' House, records the endless fascination the stars of the show exert. From litter habits to excessive ear licking, no subject is taboo. The couple even went so far as to place a camera, set to flash every 13 minutes, over their bed in order to record nocturnal comings and goings. Suffice it to say that on average two people and five pussycats tossed and turned, though one photo features seven cats. (The heavy occupancy rate leads us to suggest that the authors invest some of the profits from this book in a king-size mattress.)
Walker's finest innovation is photographing from the ground up. Somehow, BobCat gets his charges onto large sheets of glass and snaps away, turning quotidian activities like eating, stalking, and sleeping into an art that may not be high but is definitely hilarious. The full-page photo of Denise, left front paw smooshed against the glass, her gaping mouth in search of maximum kibble, is only one among the book's many laugh-fests. And the next spread, three tabbies lapping up milk, is even more entertaining. Of course, there's a thin line between doting and dotty--one this menagerie more than occasionally toes. But underneath all the silliness lies a serious aim, as Walker writes: "It is our hope that Cats into Everything will encourage others to look into their own relationships (animal and human) and devote more 'quality' time before it's too late." Mission mirthfully accomplished. --Kerry Fried

Interior Design with Cats in Mind.......2007-01-20
This is the second book by the authors of The Cats' House. We bought this copy for friends in B.C., and they tell us they love the ideas in the book. They also plan to "open up" the walls of their new home with cat-ways, make cat-tunnels between rooms, and paint everything in bright Mexi-colors. We can't wait to see how it turns out!
If you and your friends love color and cats too, this is the perfect gift!
They Sure Are!!!.......2005-09-07
Amazing what cats can "Think" of to get into. Such delightful creatures to watch, enjoy, love!!!
Wonderful. This folks love cats almost as much as me!.......2003-06-23
This is another book by the authors of the Cat House. This is their story of how they live with the felines who run their home. It's both funny, touching, silly and amazing to what lengths they go to keep their furry brood happy. I can only say that they've exceeded my efforts, but only just. Best wishes to them and to the felines blessed to share their 9 lives with them.
Required Viewing.......2002-04-14
Every kitten should come equiped with this book. If you don't like it, you ought to consult a physician. A no-BS, colorful, I-wanna-kittie book, we loved every page. But then...ours is a multi cat home with house cats, barn cats, in-the-studio cats and even yard cats. So maybe I'm a bit too subjective, waddya think?
It's not brain surgery, it is just plain cute. Right now I am ordering six more copies to send to friends and family. No kidding.
Ok, but rather a disappointment.......2002-01-24
This book did not match my expectations. It is fun to flip through and look at some of the images, but most of the photos are not very well done, too cluttered with everything, but the cats. The layout of the book is too cluttered, confusing too. That said, there are a few very nice shots and overall it's a fun book, but i still put it down with a bad taste in my mouth. If you're looking for cool pictures of animals in nice pet-friendly surroundings, but "Animal House Style" by Julia Szabo. It's a so much better book!

Book Description
Grab your lint roller and come cavort with the cats! According to the American Pet Products Manufacturing Association's 1999-2000 National Pet Owners Survey, there are more than 64 million cats in American homes. Now that's a lot of cats, and Cats Into Everything: The Cats' House 2002 Calendar hilariously showcases eleven frisky felines purring and playing their way into all aspects of their family's life. Authors Bob Walker and Frances Mooney once again celebrate life with kitties in this fresh, funny, full-color calendar based on Walker's book, Cats Into Everything. They have struck a universal purr among cat lovers with their comical and endearing photographs of America's favorite pet.
Book Description
Nothing about pruning is obvious; in fact, most of it is downright counterintuitive, says expert Cass Turnbull. This second edition of her definitive illustrated guide adds 40 percent new material, with more coverage of different kinds of trees, shrubs, and ground covers and how to prune them for health and aesthetics. The book is organized around the most common types of plants found in Northwest gardens: evergreen and deciduous shrubs; bamboos and tea roses; rhododendrons, camellia and other tree-like shrubs; hedge plants like boxwood and heather; clematis, wisteria and all those vines; and detailed information on trees by species from dogwoods to weeping cherries. In her trademark witty style, Turnbull also addresses tools, landscape renovation, and design errors. Included too are her amusing Ten Commandments for gardeners, which feature such treasures as “Thou shalt not weed-whip the trunk of thy tree, nor bash it with thine mower, nor leave anything tied on thy tree or the branches of thy tree, as is done in the land of the philistines.”
Customer Reviews:
The best pruning guide, funny and very readable........2007-05-06
I discovered Cass Turnbull's original guide several years ago through on-line research - and was amused and excited to read about her work forming Plant Amnesty, an organization with a goal of protecting plants from mal-pruing into meatballs and other boring shapes.
Her guide is structured to provide a general introduction to pruning techniques, then branching out to cover different classes of plants, finally focusing in detail on many common plants with specific guidelines for pruning. This has become my pruning bible.
Suffice to say that this second edition is more of the same, more plants covered, more photos and how-to illustrations, and more humorous stories. Well worth your investment!
Read it, refer to it, prune by it. And learn to respect your plants by pruning them naturally!
Great pruning guide, especially if you live in the PNW.......2006-09-07
MUCH better than the highly rated American Horticultural Society pruning guide, in my opinion. I bought them both at the same time. She doesn't cover the huge variety of species that other books try to, and the book is actually a collection of short treatises she wrote for a periodical publication, so there's a lot of repetition. But the repetition is all information that you really need to learn, so it's better to get it hammered in right. Instead of a big quick listing of facts, you'll get to know the personalities of various types of plants in depth, and know how to put that knowledge to use. I definitely don't look at people's yards the same way anymore, and I feel confident that I can take care of my own shrubs and small trees now. I also enjoyed her dorky sense of humor, compete with bad puns and comic illustrations.
A superb supplementary reference and resource for gardeners, homeowners, and landscapers.......2006-05-05
Now in an updated second edition, Cass Turnbull's Guide To Pruning is a no-nonsense guide to pruning plants the right way, since the wrong way can lead to "water sprouts" (stringy, hairy twigs that grow straight up on a tree) or other eyesores and disasters. Professional gardener Cass Turnbull gives step-by-step instructions for pruning more than 160 species of trees, shrubs, ground covers, vines, and more. Over 150 b/w illustrations clarify the various techniques, and new highlights of the second edition include additional chapters on pruning ground covers and hedges, expanded coverage of mounding-habit, cane-growing, and tree-like shrubs, pruning tips organized by regions of America, new illustrations, and more. Cass Turnbull's Guide To Pruning is a superb supplementary reference and resource for gardeners, homeowners, and landscapers.
A book about pruning is fun to read? Absolutely!.......2006-02-20
Cass Turnbull brings both her expertise and her fun spirit to this excellent book about pruning. It's a page turner, with lots of great information and insight. Turnbull's writing makes it enjoyable to read, unlike many boring gardening books. I'm glad I found it before attempting some major pruning this year.

Great Pruning Guide.......2005-05-14
End the senseless mutilation of trees and shrubs. Clear, concise, and with a sprinkle of good humor to boot. From PlantAmnesty (www.plantamnesty.org) founder Cass Turnbull, this pruning guide is a must for gardeners everywhere!
If you can get a hold of a copy, I also recommend the out-of-print book "The Complete Guide to Landscape Design, Renovation, and Maintenance: A Practical Handbook for the Home Landscape Gardener"
updated 3/21/2006: new editions of both books mentioned in this review are now available.
Before biting the garden bullet, read this!.......2005-01-14
Cass Turnbull is to pruning and informed gardening today what Thalassa Cruso was to the 1970s and 80s - a botanical Julia Child whose depth of knowledge is matched only by her common sense and wit.
In this inexpensive, indispensable book subtitled "What, When, Where & How to Prune for a More Beautiful Garden" Turnbull takes the no nonsense approach to both the inexperienced and highly skilled gardener, and with her straight forward writing explains in easy to understand terms how to make plants, bushes and trees look and feel their best.
One could quibble with the paucity of illustrations, but that may just be part of Turnbulls' technique: if you are serious about learning this art of pruning, then invest the time in the reading. She has a profound respect for plants (she is the founder of PlantAmnesty based in Seattle) and encourages the fearful first-cutter to look, feel and tend to plants and their shaping needs like a caring surgeon.
There are few dos and don'ts that Turnbull doesn't cover in this helpful manual. And in the end she instructs us with such wry wit and goodwill that we feel we've communed with Mother Earth! Grady Harp, January 2005
Don't Miss Gem of a Book for Beginners & Experienced Pruners.......2004-06-04
In my opinion, this is an excellent guide for beginners or experienced pruners, and represents quite a departure from the average pruning book format and formula. Pruning book authors should take heed of the fact that the information in this book is highly USABLE and approachable. Do not be deterred if you don't know who Cass Turnbull is or never heard of Sasquatch Books. This is a little gem that you will miss if you only buy your books at the local chain bookstore.
Cass Turnbull has been pruning and teaching about it for probably 20 years, and the book represents the voice of all that experience and skill. Translated, that means she not only knows how to prune, but she can also teach others to do it. She started Plant Amnesty, a Seattle-based nonprofit devoted to stopping the senseless mutilation through mal-pruning of shrubs and trees. People in the Northwest know her and love her; in my opinion, she deserves to become well known in the rest of the country.
Cass provides lots of details but they are very easy to understand. The book contains thorough instructions (several PAGES each) on pruning a commonly-used landscaping shrubs and vines. See the book's table of contents to find out if the plants you want to prune are included.
I think the book's subtitle should be "Pruning for the Real World." I find that the key impressive feature of this book is that it integrates the theoretical "selective heading cut" and "thinning cut" type info with the real-life experience of crawling around in shrubs and deciding what to cut. In the real world, shrubs that should never be sheared are cut into geometric forms regularly, or, people get busy and neglect their shrubs and then try to figure out what to do about them.. In the real world, owners of such shrubs often don't know how to deal with the result. In the real world people make pruning errors and don't know how to fix them. Or, even though you understand how to make the cuts, you don't understand WHAT to cut and why for aesthetic improvement. The book addresses those situations, and explains how to undo pruning messes or gradually rejuvenate overgrown shrubs. The concept of the pruning budget - how much you can prune without stimulating ugly and fast regrowth -- is explained and defined for many of the shrubs in the book.
By the way, Cass also has a sense of humor which is amply displayed in the text and the illustrations. This subject doesn't have to be dry and boring!
The biggest mystery for me of pruning an unknown shrub is "How will it respond?" It's like a dark tunnel with no light at the end when you don't know from firsthand experience what will happen when you cut a branch off. Quirks of individual shrubs are explained (squiggly regrowth on rhododendrons, the tendency of dogwood and Viburnum to sucker/water sprout very easily). Problems you will encounter and decisions you will have to make are covered, and improving the way a shrub looks without drastically cutting it back are explained.
I find myself reading and re-reading the information-packed sections to glean more information. I think the unique thing about this book is that you gain something of the many years of Cass's experience rather than a brief formula. Basic information plus more subtle points are included. So many war stories are included that I found it quickly boosted my judgment and confidence in pruning.
In future editions, I would like to see an even more detailed section on tools with even more about important features and maintenance of more saws, pruners, shears and loppers. Cass also gives burning bush (Euonymus alata) high marks, I disagree, since it is proving to be very invasive in the Northeast and is ruining some of our lovely forests, I would like to see it on the "Not recommended - one pruning cut at the base" list. On topics that have been covered extensively and that are said to have many subtleties, such as rose or Clematis pruning, Cass simplifies rather than complicates, and some may desire more details than are provided. Minor quibbles.
I don't think anyone who buys this book will be sorry. If you are also pruning many unusual shrubs, buy an additional "1001 shrubs" type of pruning book as an adjunct. This one will build your pruning prowess fast; the other will give you little tips on specific plants that will make much better sense once you've read and used Cass Turnbull's Guide to Pruning. See the online table of contents for the trees and shrubs that are covered. Although this book is published by a Northwest US regional publisher, most of the plants covered in the book are grown also in the Northeast (and the book is actually intended to be useful all over the US). In all, a very usable and readable book at a very reasonable price.

Idiosyncratic take on minimalist interiors.......2000-01-11
As someone who loves both London and minimalist architecture, I have to say this book doesn't *quite* redeem its promise. I think the fault may lie in the series' concept rather than the book per se. While it does sound many of the right notes - Pawsonian asperity first and foremost - by restricting the ambit to London, the authors miss out on many of the most interesting trendlets in this most adaptable style. It's both pretty and well-presented, but as a comprehensive statement doesn't entirely succeed. For a more comprehensive take on *architecture* as opposed to decor, I'd look at *The Architecture of Minimalism*; for those looking for a more purely idea-driven sourcebook, I'd check out *Minimum*.
The Bible for Minimalism and its British origins.......1997-09-11
For anyone wanting to discover what is minimalism and wher it came from, this a must. No one has managed to outline and seize precisely the essence of it as well as H. YPMA. Outstanding photos, and a fantastic insigt into London
Book Description
This book shows the before and after of these ancient sites after excavation as never seen before. The wonderful and romantic images from David Roberts as were first seen when he travelled to Egypt, are contrasted with current photographs of the same sites. Although saving these monuments to the ancient past is most important to the world, one can't help but to wish to come upon these wonders when Roberts captured them in his drawings. Truely a must for anyone who has been to Egypt, or simply wants to arm travel through history.A large book with full color plates.
Customer Reviews:
thank you mister Roberts........2007-06-30
This book is no more available in France (I'm from Paris), and I saw some sketches of David Roberts a trip in Aswan, so wished discover his work. I am delighted with this book. The high quality of printing, the intersting texts (even for a french citizen) are what was expecting. The most spectacular sketches are those of Isis temple that show the paintings on columns and ceiling nowadays disapeared. It is also fascinating to see the evolution of egyptian civilisation from 19th century and today, regarding way of life and architecture.
In one word : thank you mister Roberts.
A good overview of a great artist........2007-06-15
Many books on David Robert's are small or not generous enough to allow you full scope to enjoy his paintings or they focus on his Levantine paintings.
This book is probably the best around that is not to expensive but gives you a feel for his grand Egyptian paintings. Some really nice ones of Sphinx, pyramids and also some of the lesser temples feature. The only other book which is now out of print that deals with this subject well is Peter Clayton's the Re-discovery of Ancient Egypt. Thames and Hudson.
Egypt / Lost and Found.......2007-01-03
As in the previous Roberts books, this format of a real-life photograph side by side with the artist's rendering of the same scene gives the reader a very reflective perspective into the Ancient World.
Egypt: yesterday and Today.......2006-03-17
This is a most amazing book, it has both water colours and photos of the sights of Ancient Egypt. As a reminder of a special holiday or a factual account it is the best. The size of the book makes it prominent coffee table book and easy to just pick up and dip into another wondeful page.
Spectacular Egypt Drawings.......2006-03-10
This is a most interesting and beautifully photograph and drawn comparison of ancient and modern Egypt of David Roberts Lithographs. This book is for anyone interested in Egypt. A beautiful coffee table book

Book Description
In 1838 and 1839, painter David Roberts traveled throughout Egypt and across the Sinai Peninsula to Petra, Jerusalem, and Palestine. The lithographs based on the sketches and paintings he produced during these trips won him fame that endures to this day. This exceptional slipcased package presents, in two volumes, full-color plates of his original artwork, accompanied by commentary and extracts from his journals. In a fascinating comparison between the lands that Roberts depicts and their modern-day incarnations, White Star has juxtaposed new photographs from travel photographer Antonio Attini with sketches of the same site drawn by Roberts, revealing the same view, more than a century and a half later. These pairings, accompanied by an insightful text by Fabio Bourbon, provide readers with a unique perspective on changes that have occurred in these legendary regions. The two volumes are supplemented by The Life, Works, and Travels of David Roberts, a concise yet comprehensive biography of David Roberts.
Book Description
The autobiographies of former slaves contributed powerfully to the abolitionist movement in the United States, fanning national--even international--indignation against the evils of slavery. The four texts gathered here are all from North Carolina slaves and are among the most memorable and influential slave narratives published in the nineteenth century. The writings of Moses Roper (1838), Lunsford Lane (1842), Moses Grandy (1843), and the Reverend Thomas H. Jones (1854) provide a moving testament to the struggles of enslaved people to affirm their human dignity and ultimately seize their liberty.
Introductions to each narrative provide biographical and historical information as well as explanatory notes. Andrews's general introduction to the collection reveals that these narratives not only helped energize the abolitionist movement but also laid the groundwork for an African American literary tradition that inspired such novelists as Toni Morrison and Charles Johnson.
