I have really enjoyed this author's other books and was disappointed in this one. Could have been 1/2 the length as many of the chapters just repeated the same theme again and again. By the end there was one character I could have gladly seen killed off just because he/she was so boring! Do read her series, maybe you'll enjoy this installment more then I did. Hoping for better next time.

If ever there were a prescription for longevity, the folks of Okinawa, a collection of islands strung between Japan and Taiwan, have found it. Considered the world's healthiest people, residents of this tropical archipelago routinely live active, independent lives well into their 90s and 100s. Their rates of obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, memory loss, menopause, and breast, colon and prostate cancer rank far below the rates for these illnesses in America and other industrialized countries. In fact, researchers believe many Okinawans are physically younger than their chronological ages. In essence, the Okinawans have found a way to beat the clock.

How do they do it? In The Okinawa Program, Bradley J. Willcox, M.D., D. Craig Willcox, Ph.D., and Makoto Suzuki, M.D. reveal the islanders' age-defying secrets. Of course, there are really no surprises here: a low-fat diet, exercise, stress management, strong social and family ties, and spiritual connectedness--the same things experts have been recommending for years--all play key roles in keeping the Okinawans youthful. But in this fascinating read, which is peppered with inspiring anecdotes about these remarkable people, the authors provide concrete evidence that adopting these healthy habits pays off significantly in terms of tacking more productive years onto our lives.

Based on the authors' 25-year Okinawa Centenarian Study, this extraordinarily well-written book demonstrates that genetics provide only so much protection against disease. Indeed, the authors often remind us that when younger Okinawans pick up Western habits, their rates of obesity, illness, and life expectancy start to match ours as well. Clearly, when it comes to longevity, healthy lifestyle habits will out. That said, the major message of The Okinawa Program is that we can easily adopt the life-lengthening strategies that have served the Okinawans so well for generations. To that end, the authors pack chapters with suggestions for following "The Way," from eating a low-fat, low-calorie diet packed with fiber and complex carbohydrates (cooking up the book's more than 80 recipes is a start) and learning tai chi to finding time to meditate and relax, developing one's spirituality, doing volunteer work, and building a solid network of friends and family. Rounding out the book, the authors pull their key recommendations into a comprehensive yet doable four-week plan that's meant to get you started. Following "The Way" isn't a free shot at immortality, but it certainly helps stack the deck in your favor. --Norine Dworkin

    Book Description

There is nothing more universal than the desire to slow down the aging process, to live a long, full life with health, energy, and independence. The Okinawa Program presents the first evidence-based program to make this possible. Authored by a team of preeminent medical and scientific experts, this breakthrough book documents the diet, exercise, and lifestyle practices of the world's healthiest, longest-lived people and reveals how readers can apply these practices to their own lives.

In Okinawa, the occurrence of heart disease is only one fifth that of American levels. The rate of breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers is less than a quarter of American levels. And the number of centenarians per hundred thousand is six times that of the United States. Most important, Okinawans have the world's longest disability-free life expectancy.

Concluding a long-term, collaborative scientific study, The Okinawa Program clearly and expertly explains the reasons for this remarkable successful aging phenomenon. With a realistic four-week Turnaround Plan for diet, fitness, and psychological well-being, this book offers nearly one hundred easy, fast, and delicious recipes, as well as a moderate exercise routine derived from the former island kingdom's unique martial arts. The authors introduce the cognitive and spiritual practices that have emerged as crucial to the overall health of Okinawan elders and also include resources and an extensive reference section for further information.

Accessible, authoritative, and comprehensive, The Okinawa Program can help readers minimize their risk for heart disease, breast, ovarian, prostate, and colon cancers, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's disease, as well as maintain healthy body weight, reduce stress, and develop more satisfying personal relationships. The Okinawa Program is a life-changing guide to increased health and youthful vigor at any age.

4 out of 5 stars An Escape from America's Toxic Lifestyle.......2006-09-18

America isn't a very safe place to live.

I'm not talking about crime rates, but about death rates, or more specifically health expectancy rates, which is the length of time a person can expect to live in good health, living independently and productively with a sound mind and body.

The United States ranks 24th, dead last among all developed countries.

Why? What is so toxic about the American lifestyle?

Well, the old saying goes, if you want to spot a counterfeit, go study a genuine dollar bill.

Likewise, if you want to spot what's wrong with America, why not go study the healthiest people on Earth?

Well, that's what two brothers, one a physician and one an anthropologist, have been doing for the past decade in the islands of Okinawa, studying over 400 centenarians--people over 100 years old. And not decrepit, demented shells over 100 either-- people still living in their homes, gardening, walking to market daily, chatting with friends.

Why are they living so long? Why are their bodies on almost every biochemical measure 20 years younger or more than equivalent American bodies?

That's the subject of the book The Okinawa Program, and a fascinating read it is. The authors both try to describe the health and lifestyle of the Okinawan culture, try to explain what is healthy about it, and then how to incorporate it into our lifestyle.

The distinctives that the authors bring out chapter by chapter are a healthy primarily vegetarian diet, regular exercise, a low-pressure lifestyle, use of meditation and other forms of stress-reduction, a close supportive social network, and their "spirituality" which is mostly positive and optimistic in nature.

The book itself is well-written and documented as far as this genre goes. It's only downfall (also common to the genre) is tunnel-vision. The authors' enthusiasm for all things Okinawan rarely points out anything negative at all about the culture, to the point that you wonder how objective they really are. Beyond that, they often downplay the very tenuous nature of drawing conclusions about looking backwards and trying to figure out why things are a certain way-- you can use common sense and a little science to make a good guess that eating foods high in flavinoids may extend life, but limited science plus common sense has led us down the wrong path many a time before.

Another major point to be made is that these non-Christian authors cannot perceive the difference between mere religion (which they apparently believe is generically good for both its placebo like effect on the human body and possibly tapping into some generic higher power) vs. a genuine relationship with the genuine God.

Of course, this draws a rather brutal line in the sand for those of us who do name the name of Christ. If our lives have truly been touched by the living God, then why are we dying by the droves in our gluttony and physical laziness and frantically paced American lifestyles, while people who do not know the true God over the ocean are living lives which I suspect more closely model what Christ would have us live? Food for thought, and a worthwhile book to read and ponder.

This has got to be one of the most well-researched books on health and longevity that I've read in a long time. Based on a landmark study on the people of Okinawa (Japan), the authors outline the preventative lifestyle techniques that keep the elders of Okinawa healthy well into old age and with lower rates of disease and disability than here in the West.

Also highly recommended is the book The Okinawa Diet Plan, as this is more specifically geared towards those trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy body weight. Definitely two books that belong in the home library of anyone seriously interested in health and longevity.

1 out of 5 stars great book even if you don't hunt or fish.......2006-11-14

I have had this book for at least 20+yrs and every time somebody tells me they won't eat wild game or duck I go to the L.L. Bean cookbook and find a great dish that is easy to cook and that same person always loves the dishes. When I lived in Oregon I used the book mostly for venison but now that I live in Texas I have cooked wild turkey, duck, fish. I have also used their brining recipe and used a stovetop smoker to make smoked turkey breast. YUM.

5 out of 5 stars Best Fish and Game Cookbook.......2006-11-10

This book does everything. It looks good on the shelf, is interesting to read, has nice illustrations, and contains much more information than just recipes. Oh, it also has a lot of fantastic recipes. It's not even close as to what I would keep were I to only have one game cookbook. This one's the best. Makes a great gift - I know, that's how I got it and I think of the person that gave it to me with warm thoughts every time I use it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Game Cookbook Available.......2005-09-16

As an avid hunter and fisherman, I am always looking for great game recipes. This book delivers. I have owned it for many years and have prepared virtually all of the many venison recipes, as well as many others. I have never been disappointed. Some favorites include Buck with Bourbon, Venison steak with Porcini mushrooms, Devil River Venison (a spicy casserole from Texas of venison with pinto beans), and the Scottish classic Steak and a Dram (venison steak in a sauce made with Stilton Cheese and just a dash of Scotch Whisky). Another favorite is Heart of Venison Braised with Root Vegetables. Even if you don't like heart this dish will make you a believer. There are also many great ground venison recipes. For anyone who hunts or fishes and loves to eat what they catch, this book would be an outstanding choice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on dressage.......2004-02-13

With all the books on dressage out nowadays, this is one that emphasizes developing the horse with daily exercises that he explains and then shows in lots of photos. The instruction is good and really helpful to a dressage rider.

3 out of 5 stars Thoughtful but disorganized.......2002-02-03

The message is all there in this book but finding it is a treasure hunt. There is some excellent advice, excellent exercises, and great information on how to progress. In order to put it together logically, I needed to create my own index and map to the information.

        5 out of 5 stars A fine dressage book!.......2001-01-17

At the risk of repeating what everyone says about every book that they like, you must be this book and digest it thoroughly if you are at all serious about dressage. I have nearly every training manual that has been published about dressage, but this book deals more with the theory of gymnastic training of the horse that is so vital if we are to understand why we do all the things that we do. It will also save you many hours of frustration and anguish as you are trying to perfect movements. I would write a proper epistle about more of the merits of this great book (get 'The Ethics and Passions of Dressage', too) but to tell you the truth, I'd just as soon get back to Chapter 10 right now!

        1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2000-06-28

very disappointing book. The writing is poor, the book is disorganized, and consists primarily of repetitive statements about the author's philosophy on dressage. I wasn't able to read more than half the book before giving up in disgust.

        5 out of 5 stars Practical book.......2000-03-31

of great usefulness for riders of any level and discipline. The author discusses manege patterns that help achieving correct athletic development of your horse and help remedie faults such as crookedness. Too often, riders resort to use of equipment, such as draw reins, to control their horse. After reading this book, these people will realize that that is completely unneccessary and, moreover, is inhumane and has adverse effects. This book is more to the point than some of the other books by the same author.

5 out of 5 stars a huge help for one new to gardening.......2007-09-21

Being pretty new to perennials but having read many books I was having sort of a writers block when it came to WHAT to put in my new garden.

I knew all about HOW but with so many choices I was overwhelmed!

This book has a good number of templates to give you a jump start and many outstanding photos of combinations of flowers that work together. In fact this has some of the best photos I have ever seen in a garden book.

It also covers difficult situations like what works in Heavy Clay and wet sites an so forth.

My plan was a butterfly garden and they had the perfect template for a 12x8 garden.

Excellent book for beginners or people that are looking for new combinations!! My fav book so far. (out of the 30 I have looked at).

3 out of 5 stars Decent book, lousy photos.......2007-04-25

One of the drawbacks of buying gardening books online is that you can't see the photos. If I had thumbed through this book I don't think I would have purchased it. Not that it doesn't have a lot of good information and ideas. It's just that the photos are, for the most part, awful. The color is garish and over-saturated and the images actually look blurry. Also, many of the plant combo photos are very close up, which doesn't help when you are trying to figure out how to place your perennials when planting. For me, a good gardening book has to not only give useful information and how-tos (which this book does for the most part), but it has to inspire with lovely photos! And that is where this book fails.

                2 out of 5 stars No Juice.......2007-03-29

This book was (is) a big disappointment, containing as it does nothing new regarding perennnial combining that isn't covered in at least a dozen or more recent and more interesting books, not to mention the classics. This is perennial combining 202 with no spark of imagination in the pairings that can make a garden jump for joy. The photography is so ordinary and the color is extremly garish. Is that due to the Digital Imaging Specialists Dale Mack and Jane Ramsey or what? I can find no photographic credits (except for the cover) which is probably just as well. Obviously in a book this size (351 pages), from someone who is as accomplished as Mr. Burrell, there is useful information to be gleaned but I already have books that serve that purpose. If I had seen this in a book store, having thumbed through it for a few moments, I would never have bought it. However, if you are just beginning your library of perennial books this one may be useful to you.

5 out of 5 stars Love This Book.......2007-03-22

Although I have a plethora of gardening books, this one stands out as one of my favorites. It shows a picture example on every page. It has planting diagrams (garden plans) so you can duplicate what you see and it gives a lot of information about the plants. It's the best of both worlds - you can use the information and get creative, or follow the plans and duplicate what you see. Either way, you'll have a great garden!
Although I've been gardening for a good many years, it's nice to have a reference as to how things will look together, instead of my usual "plant it here and hope for the best" approach! I'm tired of moving my plants every year.
I bought my book over the winter and it's a great "dream" book. Now I can't wait till I can get out there and put it all to good use!

                5 out of 5 stars perennial combos.......2007-02-16

This is a wonderful guide to planning and developing a perennial garden. The author gives examples for numerous planting condition, such as shade, sand, clay. I can't wait for spring!

                    Book Description

Preclassical and indigenous nonwestern military institutions and methods of warfare are the chief subjects of this annotated bibliography of work published 1967-1997. Classical antiquity, post-Roman Europe, and the westernized armed forces of the 20th century, although covered, receive less systematic attention. Emphasis is on historical studies of military organization and the relationships between military and other social institutions, rather than wars and battles. Especially rich in references to the periodical literature, the bibliography is divided into eight parts: (1) general and comparative topics; (2) the ancient world; (3) Eurasia since antiquity; (4) sub-Saharan Africa and Oceania; (5) pre-Columbian America; (6) postcontact America; (7) the contemporary nonwestern world; and (8) philosophical, social scientific, natural scientific, and other works not primarily historical.

                          Excerpts from Kirkus Review (11-1-1993)

“Any analysis of the American Black experience demands close attention to both the political and the personal, and this extraordinary memoir by Williams … offers just that, as well as making a noteworthy contribution to recent American legal History.”

“Becoming a Children’s Court probation officer … she contended with the political pressures of placing the children of Ethel and Julus Rosenberg … In the early 70’s, the author took on her most important case, defending her niece, Assata Shakur, “leader” of the Black Liberation Army.”
