5 out of 5 stars 2nd title in the Needlecraft Mystery series........2007-08-15

A nice edition to the Needlecraft Mystery. The type of book I like to read while waiting in line or traveling via plane. The story is not very complicated, so it's a book that you can put down and come back to easily. However, after you start this book, you may not want to put it down.

I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

3 out of 5 stars A satisfying read.......2007-08-09

Betsy Devonshire must solve the decades-old murder of a mystery woman that appears to be entangled with the present-day murder of one of her friend's ex-husband. Twists abound, and while Betsy is keeping track of suspects, she also must juggle dealing with her new business and closing on her sister's estate. Lots of needle-y fun that even the uninitiated will enjoy. While it wasn't the most enthralling book I've ever read, it was a decent enough mystery -- and I'm picky about my mysteries!

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good.......2006-07-04

I picked this book up at my local used bookstore because the cover looked interesting. I have no interest in or knowledge of sewing, embroidering, crocheting, etc. but I discovered that it didn't matter. This was a fun, easy to read, engaging murder mystery with no blood, gore, or cursing, and the revealing of the killer was heart pounding. Just the way I like my mysteries! If you have no interest in sewing, etc., just skip over the paragraphs that describe Betsy and her customers doing it. It's not a big deal. (and if you DO like sewing, then you'll appreciate the discussion of it, and the sewing pattern included in the back of the book)

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book, and will glad read the others in the series.

5 out of 5 stars A cozy mystery.......2006-06-16

This is the second book in the needlecraft mystery series. Betsy the owner of the store Crewel World is invited to watch a boat being raised from the bottom of the lake. When a skeleton is found on the boat with an old piece of lace. Many of the people in town begin to wonder if this skeleton is one of the two people who disappeared around the same time the boat sank.

Many of the characters in this book are great. I am looking forward to reading the third book in this series. I am also wondering if Sophie will be getting her cast removed in the next book.

5 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2005-12-21

This was the first Needlecraft Mystery I've read and it won't be my last. I loved it. The characters were fully realized and very interesting. The drama and mystery were intriguing. The story was just fast enough to keep it going and just slow enough to give you all the details. I like that Ms. Ferris did not spend too much time repeating clues over and over.

The sleuth, Betsy, is a really sweetie. I liked her feistiness but also her thoughtful personality.

There was one last thread left dangling but it didn't ruin the book for me. I think if you love mysteries you should read this. I am not a crafty person but I loved it anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Eagerly awaiting the sequel..........2007-01-16

A wonderful book! Nancy Attwell blends action, intrigue and romance in a story that is realistic yet grand and noble. Her characters, both those central to the weaving plots and those just passing through, are vibrantly alive, and your concern for their fate carries you through the story and draws you deeper into the land of Lothemia. Swordfights and battles, wit and revenge, love and loyalty- this book has a very wide appeal. A rare find that manages to have something for everyone without sacrificing quality.

          4 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......2006-12-17

This was one of those books that once you start, you just want to keep reading. I ended up reading it in one sitting. The fairytale influences woven into the real world made for an entertaining read, and the characters were beyond the often one dimensional characters found in historical/fantasy writing

          4 out of 5 stars Not a Fool's Path.......2006-12-03

This is a page-turner brimming with lifelike characters, interesting historical detail and surprising plot twists. Ms. Attwell's crisp prose propels the tale forward, and populates the world of the 13th Century with characters both true to their time, and timeless. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in traveling back in time for a rollicking adventure filled with romance and intrigue.

A note on stars: I seem to be the only one withholding that last star. The book is very fine historical romance. I think this means only that I'm a tougher grader, and my 4 stars is equivalent to someone else's 5.

          5 out of 5 stars Lovely story.......2006-03-03

Great book. Story was unpredictable and very enjoyable. I loved the characters and was sad when the book ended.

5 out of 5 stars Psychological Evaluation by Maggie Hunt-Cohn.......2006-02-20

Nancy's wonderful imagination created a world of people unfettered by today's "oh, you shouldn't feel this,,, you shouldn't feel that." With fairy tales as her inspiration, she shows a father and son interchange that would be considered dysfunctional in 2006, and a fight scene to allow one to dig out one's most painful hot button so successfully one could just throw away one's sword and walk happily away from disposing of the perpetrator permanently.

          Book Description

With the FDA's warning that antidepressants may cause agitation, anxiety, hostility, and even violent or suicidal tendencies, these medications are at the forefront of national legal news. Harvard physician Joseph Glenmullen has led the charge to warn the public that antidepressants are overprescribed, underregulated, and, especially, misunderstood in their side and withdrawal effects. Now he offers a solution!

More than twenty million Americans -- including over one million teens and children -- take one of today's popular antidepressants, such as Paxil, Zoloft, or Effexor. Dr. Glenmullen recognizes the many benefits of antidepressants and prescribes them to his patients, but he is also committed to warning the public of the dangers associated with overprescription. Dr. Glenmullen's last book, Prozac Backlash, sounded the alarm about possible dangers. The Antidepressant Solution provides the remedy. It is the first book to call attention to the drugs' catch-22: Although many people are ready to go off these drugs, they continue to take them because either the patient or the doctor mistakes antidepressant withdrawal for depressive relapse. The Antidepressant Solution offers an easy, step-by-step guide for patients and their doctors.

Written by the premier authority in the field, The Antidepressant Solution is an invaluable book for all those concerned with going through the process -- from friends and family members to doctors and patients themselves.

4 out of 5 stars ends hysteria against pshyicatric medicine.......2007-10-06

Diagnosed bi-polar I was looking for outside help in getting off Effexor, which I felt was not a good drug for me. I have found a huge amount of Online horror stories about the hell awaiting me, and friends on a constant "psychiatrists are Satan and all anti-depressants drugs are poison" rant had me filled with fear. This book calmed me down, helped me see when the "right time" to get off anti-depressants could be, and then how to do it. My psychiatrist was knowledgeable about the tapering off method, and I have had no problem worth mentioning in accomplishing this.
No doubt these medicines are over prescribed, and when given for reasons other than Major Clinical Depression can cause severe reactions, as would giving insulin to a non-diabetic. Finally, solid information. Excellent charts to copy if needed for withdrawal, common sense advice from someone qualified to give it.

          2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-12-21

Dr. Glenmullen does a fine job of underscoring the importance of carefully tapering off
antidepressants. This is tremendously important because many MDs, psychopharmacologists included,
take a casual, potentially damaging approach to the process of discontinuing these meds.

I found the book very well intentioned, but redundant. Glenmullen makes a set of points over and over again, yet he doesn't deal at all with other relevant issues, i.e. nutritional supplements which have been found helpful to patients weaning off these medications. Although the subtitle of his first book, "Prozac Backlash"suggests that it covers "effective alternatives" there is no mention whatsoever of alternative approaches here. (I haven't read "Prozac Backlash" -- I'm just surprised that that sort of valuable information would be addressed in the author's first work and entirely ignored in the second, especially when it might be highly
useful for people concerned with getting off anti-depressants.

5 out of 5 stars This book has the answer!.......2006-12-15

I recently decided to stop taking the antidepressant Lexapro. My doctor had me reduce my dose from 30 mg to 20 mg for a week, and then to 10 mg for one more week. Three days after being off of Lexapro, I felt extreme fatigue, headaches, and dizziness. I slept most of the day. When I called my doctor to ask him if I was going through withdrawal, he said " he did not think so". On the advice of the book and author Dr. Glenmullen, I went back on my last dose of 10 mg. The symptoms went away immediately. I had to slowly taper my dose down in order to get off of Lexapro without the debilitating withdrawal effects. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who needs help in overcoming the withdrawal effects of antidepressants.

5 out of 5 stars Courageous and Important Work.......2006-07-06

Did you know that antidepressant dose reduction and discontinuation can cause severe and debilitating withdrawal reactions? While 10% of the US population are taking antidepressants, most people, including most doctors, have never heard of antidepressant addiction and withdrawal. Glenmullen does a fine job getting the word out about this urgent health crisis. In 2004 Congress had to force the FDA and drug manufacturers to acknowledge the well-established link between antidepressant use and increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Glenmullen shows how severe withdrawal symptoms, which can occur within hours of a missed dose, can actually drive a person to suicide. Many face a horrible dilemma when their withdrawal symptoms are misdiagnosed as relapse. Glenmullen must be applauded for taking on his own colleagues, some of whom have accepted huge fees from the drug companies to suppress and misrepressent the severity of antidepressant "discontinuation syndrome." Numerous misdeeds are revealed in Glenmullen's astute analysis, but the book's primary purpose is not critical. He presents a detailed 5 step method for helping those who want or need to stop taking these drugs. The good news, according to Glenmullen, is that patients are "almost always" able to wean off these drugs if the dose is reduced gradually (according to each individual's tolerance) with the vigilant care of a knowledgable doctor who is willing to put in the many weeks, sometimes many months, required. To his credit, Glenmullen explores the limits to his method in the story of Andy, a 16 year old boy, who after a month on Effexor, decided he wanted off, but had to spend a whole year of his young life in hell caught between the side effects and severe withdrawal, despite a painfully slow dose reduction. Glenmullen would like to believe such reactions are rare, but what if they're not? Just because some people can reduce gradually with few problems, does not prove all people can. I am one like Andy. I too took Effexor. I spent 4 months reducing gradually and became so sick and debilitated, I had to quit my job. It's now been 10 weeks since I took my last dose and I am still too sick to function. I'm worried I may have been permanently damaged by this drug. I'm not depressed, but I have considered suicide. I'm a 53 year old woman with no husband or family to support me financially. If I had known when I started this drug 10 years ago that I could become this sick when I gradually reduced and discontinued it, I never would have taken it--but I couldn't have known 10 years ago because back then, the drug companies denied the existence of antidepressant withdrawal and deliberated suppressed and misrepresented the truth. They can't deny it any longer. Babies are being born addicted to Effexor. Their mothers may have known of the dangers, they may have tried to stop, but they couldn't because the withdrawal was too much to bear. These mothers were addicted by prescription with FDA approval. This is a major health crisis, much worse than crack babies. Glenmullen's book doesn't address addicted newborns, but you can read the horrible truth in Wyeth's most recent drug label for Effexor (June 2006, p24). In the debate over the risks and benefits of antidepressants, Glenmullen identifies himself as a moderate. He is, after all, a psychiatrist whose job is to dispense these meds. He deserves credit for trying to help the thousands of desperate victims, but his "solution" may offer only false hope, masking the problem and prolonging the suffering. Eventually the people will come to know the truth about these drugs and they will be banned or boycotted. Then those who have been profitting from the people's suffering will have to undergo their own painful withdrawal--from all that money.

2 out of 5 stars Book didn't offer a VIABLE alternative for me.......2006-05-23

I've been suffering from panic disorder all my life.

I've tried all of the so-called alternatives mentioned in the book, plus few more. None worked. Though I did learn some important skills along the way. But I've still required SSRI's.

One thing I've learned over the years is to stay clear of clinicians who seem to have an "agenda". Whether it be pro-meds, or anti-meds. This auther obviously has a ANTI-med agenda. Fine. Then offer a viable alternative.

The truth of the matter is that many people with depression, anxiety and panic need BOTH meds AND non-pharmalogical treatment (PT, CBT...etc.)

SSRI's are not the enemy, depression and anxiety are!

There are a number of books that explore New England, Louisiana, and Texas, but none of them delve so delectably into green-pea pie, Boston brown bread, dirty rice, and crawfish etoufee. John Thorne has the touch for seeking out a region's essence in its culinary expressions, which is to say he cares about places and the good grub they're known for. It's a pleasure to read the rich history of his favorite dishes and to salivate over Thorne's thorough research.

          Book Description

In this collection of essays, John Thorne sets our to explore the origins of his identity as a cook, going “here” (the Maine coast, where he’d summered as a child and returned as an adult for a decade’s sojourn), “there” (southern Louisiana, where he was captivated by Creole and Cajun cooking), and “everywhere” (where he provides a sympathetic reading of such national culinary icons as the hamburger, white bread, and American cheese, and sits down to a big bowl of Texas red). These intelligent, searching essays are a passionate meditation on food, character, and place.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Standard for Serious Culinary Writing........2004-04-02

Both currently available books, `Serious Pig' and `Pot on the Fire', by John Thorne and wife Matt Lewis Thorne, are composed of essays cut from the same culinary journalistic cloth, the authors' food letter `Simple Cooking'. These essays as bodies of work do not quite fit any established form of culinary writing. It is certainly not `The Best Recipe' genre followed by the magazine `Cooks Illustrated' and some writers, although there is some element of this point of view. It is not culinary history, since it is so distinctly done from the authors' point of view. There are some essays that taste like memoir or nostalgia, but these serve more as chapters used to set the scene for text dealing with the food. It is certainly not food science a la Shirley Corriher or Alton Brown, although Alton Brown does credit Thorne as one of his biggest influences. In a nutshell, the Thornes simply provide interesting writing about food.

I love intellectual connections, so I was delighted to discover that one of the wellsprings from which John Thorne draws his inspiration is the writing of Richard Olney. This ties up a string of influence from Elizabeth David to Olney to Thorne to Alton Brown, one of the most influential popular voices in culinary journalism. Olney is one of the most intellectual writers on culinary matters writing in English and available in the United States. And, it is clear not only in Thorne's `Simple Food' motto but also in his intellectual point of view that he owes much to Olney.

The first thing which changed my reading Thorne from simple pleasure to respect was his essay on the Italian Panzanella salad, which he describes in great detail and with great attention to what Italians really mean when they make this salad, a combination of tomato, stale bread, red onion, mozzarella, cucumber, basil, and salt and pepper. The subtle intellectual honesty that caught my attention was when Thorne created an adaptation using fresh bread and remained true to the original nomenclature by calling his invention Panzanetta salad. Contrast this to Alton Brown's borrowing the same Panzanella term and applying it to a twist on the BLT sandwich by adding bacon and forgetting the onion and garlic. Not Panzanella at all, I think. Not much to most people, but to a person schooled in the principle that language was something to be respected, I was impressed.

The second thing that caught my attention was the tale of how Thorne fell into the vocation of cooking and culinary journalism. Like so many things, and like myself, it was by accident and necessity. In Thorne's case, it was because he was a dropout with little money who needed to feed himself with as few dollars as possible. If this was the prime mover in his career path, a strong influence seems to be his Maine roots. More than one essay has the feel of Maine's Stephen King writing about food. Popular subjects are his old residences, Maine crops such as potatoes and blueberries, and Maine cuisine featuring the lobster and other seafood, and Maine restaurants. One of my favorite series of essays deals with the origin of chowder. I will never again respect a chowder recipe that does not include some potato or biscuit as a thickening agent. Maine does not monopolize the story. A long series of essays covers Cajun and Creole culinary topics from New Orleans. This is where he proposes the theory that a great cuisine such as the Cajun or Italian cuisine is based on emulating a memory of greatness. I think there is a germ of truth here, but I believe Paula Wolfert offers a much fuller picture in her Morocco book.

The third and most enduring attraction of Thorne's writing is that it is simply entertaining stuff. A writer could provide the recipes on these pages with no explanation or commentary and they would be good recipes, but the writing would be like the food with the salt and pepper left out. Similarly, the history / memoir / commentary would not be nearly as interesting without the instructions for preparing the dishes on which the essays expound. The very best example of a perfect mix of culinary technique with storytelling is the essay on `Perfect Rice'. It all starts with John Thorne's claiming that he makes a pretty good pot of rice, followed by a derisive response from Madame Thorne, who had studied the issue at some length before Sir John touched on the subject early in their joint lives. Thorne proceeds to relate the story of their mutual investigations into making perfect rice. In the process, we learn much about the world's rice varieties and why rices behave like it does. After seeing how much care one can devote to such a simple subject, I mentally demote people like Sara Moulton for posing as a teacher of culinary matters when they confesses to not being able to properly cook a pot of rice.

Both volumes are available in midpriced trade paperback editions with no pictures. It is a sure test of the fact that pictures are not necessary in works on cooking in that I never miss them. A really important addition to books of this type is a list of recipes in addition to the index and table of contents. Both volumes have this important tool. The most telling endorsement of these books is that I am sure I will read them again, cover to cover, and enjoy every minute of it.

A rare treat for foodie readers.

4 out of 5 stars Tall tales and mouth-watering recipes.......2000-05-10

Part memoir, part travelogue, and part cookbook, this compellingly readable book offers insight into the people, places, ingredients, traditions, and taste of classic American cooking.

Serious Pig is broken into three main parts. In "Here," Thorne explores his Maine roots, telling stories of his grandparents' childhoods and sharing recipes for lobster stew, baked beans, and the like. In "There," Thorne covers Louisiana's cajun and creole traditions. And "Everywhere" is devoted to American classics: barbecue, pancakes, hamburgers, coffee, chili, and other food typically found in diners.

The recipes are sprinkled in among all the yarns and reminiscences. This makes Serious Pig somewhat less useful as a cookbook (though there is a separate index of recipes if you really need to track one down), but it doesn't really diminish the value of the book. What you get here is a heartfelt appreciation of American cuisine and cooking, and introduction to the folklore of regional cuisine that's missing from other books. You can read Serious Pig like a novel, even if you never cook. But don't be surprised if your mouth starts watering, and you find yourself unable to finish any given chapter without a slab of pie and a cup of rich, black coffee.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful look at cooking along the coast of Maine.......1998-10-29

A serious look at Maine cooking both past and present. Full of both commentary and recipes. It makes you eager to take a country drive, stop at a few farm stands and then go home to cook an "classic" and hearty meal full of fresh produce.

Any one who has spent time along the Mid-Coast of Maine (or there abouts) will enjoy the book even more since part of "story" involves many people and places from that area including local farms, fisherman and hang-outs.

I thought this was a useful tool in teaching my new puppy some very fun and impressive tricks. Although she is not actually speaking English, I believe the book has improved our communication, and I'm speaking better Dog.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly How to.......2005-12-22

This is the only book I've found that tells you step by step how to do the many tricks listed, but also how to use the steps to get your dog to perform anything you want. My dog rolled over after 5 minutes on his 2nd try. And his methods are not cruel, by "correction" he means saying the word "no" or tugging on the leash a bit. No where in there does he mention slapping or beating the dog. Very useful book

          1 out of 5 stars Great information....50 years ago........2004-06-20

All the gushing reviews about this writer being the "father of dog training", or whatever, fail to mention that dog training has advanced by leaps and bounds in the past 40 or 50 years. So when a writer is using fairly cruel methods to train a dog ( and causing the dog needless pain and suffering ) most dog trainers that a) aren't 80 years old, or b) actually kept up with the changes in dog training, are going to rightly dicount using stone age training methods.
Welcome to the 1980's, readers - much better training methods ( and books ) exist now. Pass up this useless historic tome and spend your money on a book that works!

          4 out of 5 stars THE CAT'S MEOW!.......2003-01-01

Every dog can have its day ... and Captain Haggerty, expert pooch trainer and the man dubbed "The King of Stupid Pet Tricks" (he's appeared with his menagerie on David Letterman's late-night talk fest more than two dozen times), has written, with oodles of tongue-in-canine-cheek humor, the book to prove it. Imagine! Teaching Doris or Alma or Fido or Rover to retrieve the TV remote, scan the Internet do the hokey-pokey or bunny hop. There are 125 easy-to-learn tricks that will have your doggie the cat's meow.

With the character of Declan O'Hearn, the amazingly prolific Robert Barnard pulls off the hat trick that every novelist attempts but only a fortunate few actually achieve: he creates a person we quickly come to care for, someone so unique and recognizable that we would know him if he walked into the room. Declan, an Irishman in his 20s, is a wandering minstrel, trying to see a bit of the world before he settles into whatever fate has in store for him. He is intelligent, eager to please, but lacks maturity.

The plot revolves around the murder of a young man whose body is found dumped in an old car outside an Indian restaurant in the town of Haworth in Northern England. This is Brontë country, where throngs of tourists pay homage to the writing family. Sent from Leeds to investigate are detective constable Charlie Peace and his boss, detective superintendent Mike Oddie. Charlie's black skin marks him as an oddity in the small villages, but it also helps him dig up the kind of details which other cops might not be offered by the locals. Declan falls under an umbrella of suspicion, due in part to his relationship with his eccentric employer and the strange circle of acolytes who surround him. Peace and Oddie put together the pieces with skill. But this one isn't really a whodunit: you can probably figure that out in 50 pages. It's the motive and the circumstances of the crime that make the book a gem. --Dick Adler

                              Book Description

Masterly mystery writer Robert Barnard transports us to the Yorkshire town of Haworth, once home to the literary Brontës, now a crowded tourist mecca, for The Corpse at the Haworth Tandoori, which begins with the shocking discovery of a young man's strangled body in an Indian Tandoori restaurant parking lot.

Who is the victim, and how did he come to meet this untimely fate? Detective Constable Charlie Peace and Detective Superintendent Mike Oddie's search for answers soon leads them to Ashworth, a nearby artists' colony, where young Irishman Declan O'Hearn had recently sought work as a handyman.

No ordinary place, Ashworth is something of a shrine to once-renowned painter Ranulph Byatt, an egotistic man who craves adulation from his inferiors and resists the judgment of his peers. To the surprise of all and the jealousy of some, Declan O'Hearn is one of the rare people Byatt welcomes into his studio and allows to watch him paint.

Charlie Peace, an experienced police officer and always a favorite among Barnard's readers, has rarely encountered such tense undercurrents as he finds at Ashworth, and he's perhaps never been among a group of people so ill-matched. They live in supposed community but lead uniquely warped lives. How does young Declan, inexperienced in the ways of the world, seeking his first great adventure, fit into this dangerous mix?

Charlie suspects Declan found more than adventure at Ashworth. Following in Declan's footsteps, he searches for the incredible story behind the body in the parking lot and the sad facts behind the destroyed hopes of a youthful wanderer.

With the kind of classic twist that only Barnard can provide, The Corpse at the Haworth Tandoori evokes memories of such Barnard masterpieces as Death by Sheer Torture while claiming its own place in the Barnard body of work as a powerful, insightful, witty, and always superbly entertaining novel of suspense.

                              5 out of 5 stars Gripping!.......2004-06-04

This was the first book by Robert Barnard I read. I absolutely could not put it down...my toddler will tell you. Barnard weaves a tale of depravity that is almost unbelievable and yet so compelling. It was creepy and engrossing; a frightening reminder of how close genius comes to madness. I rate this as the best of all the Barnards I've read, and this one led me to read many more.

5 out of 5 stars 'Tandoori' is more than food for thought!.......2000-08-09

Robert Barnard is certainly an author with dramatic flair. His novels are always a treat--even an adventure--to read, as this prolific writer seems to know no boundaries when it comes to exciting, readable prose!

For example, "The Corpse at the Haworth Tandoori" is a worthwhile excursion into Barnard territory. This time it's to Bronte country in Yorkshire (one of his favorites), more specifically to Haworth and its nearby community of Ashworth. A corpse is discovered in the boot of a car parked at the Haworth Tandoori restaurant. The body is clad only in underwear, there's no identification, and shows signs of grim mutilation. And it's in the jurisdiction of Detective Constable Charlie Peace and Detective Superintendent Mike Oddie, two policemen extraordinaire we've met in previous Barnard works.

The duo finds the body eventually leads them to Ashworth, a collection of artists, wannabes, and hangers-on where a young Irishman Declan O'Hearn had come to seek employment and has now disappeared. The body is identified as his.

Barnard is known for his stylish twists, his clever plot designs, certainly his way with words. His prose is generally salted with plenty of creative expressions and humor--in short, never a dull minute--yet at the same time, he is able to sustain a gripping suspense that makes it difficult to put the book down. Don't be surprised at the surprises, and Barnard knows how to deal them out and not put off the reader. He is a master at characterization and young Declan is well drawn, as, indeed, are his other characters.

Peace and Oddie are able to unravel this puzzle, mainly with good police work and with some luck, too. Along the way, we meet members of the Ashworth community who are clearly not who--or what--they seem, and the revelations of this mystery unfold, logically, plausibly, and with much certainty. In police procedurals, perhaps there is nothing new under the sun, but in this one, Barnard takes his plot designs and strong characterization and presents a novel well-worth one's time. Barnard's a good writer and in the course of his some 30 novels gives us a smart taste of Yorkshire and the Bronte moors. "The Corpse at the Haworth Tandoori" is a delectable buffet!

5 out of 5 stars Another award winning novel by Mr. Barnard.......1999-02-07

In the British town of Haworth lies Ashford Farm which has many cottages located on the property. The residents of the farm have little to do with the townsfolk and viceversa. The only commonly known fact about the farm community is that everyone seems to have a cult-like worship of the owner, renowned painter Ranulf Byatt, an egomaniac.

A waiter going off shift from his job at the Haworth Tandoori finds a body in the back of his car. Officer Charlie Peace and his superior Detective Superintendent Mike Odie investigate and soon trace the corpse back to Declan O'Hearn, a former assistant to Ranulf. Through flashbacks, the audience learns about Declan's arrival at the farm and his growing dissatisfaction with the blind worship that elevated Ranulf to a God-like figure. As the investigators continue their digging, they find depravity that shocks even long time police officials like Mike and Charlie.

The mantle place in Robert Barnard's home looks like a who's who of mystery awards. His latest work, THE CORPSE AT THE HAWORTH TANDOORI, substantiates that he deserves his Nero Wolf, Anthony, Agatha, and MacCavity awards. No one will guess the ending or the revelations that keep the audience constantly in shock wondering what will happen next. The superb plot is brilliantly executed, especially since he leaves everyone sans the police officers as prime suspects. The audience will reread this novel on numerous ocassions to savor the special Brnard touch.
