Book Description
Game warden John Marlin hopes that Burnett, a likeable kid, isn’t found dead in his burned down house. But Marlin doesn’t have the same warm fuzzy feelings about rancher Vance Scofield, who is missing after his SUV is found in the river. Scofield, a skirt-chasing SOB, is a “high fencer,” a rancher who pens trophy bucks behind deer-proof fences which lazy hunters can bag for a fee. To Marlin it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. Worse, a range war of sorts has erupted with the low-fence ranchers, and things are turning downright ugly. Of course Marlin still doesn’t know about the X-rated pictures a blackmailer took of the state senator in cahoots with the high fencers...the scheme being hatched by two bumbling poachers...or the stolen red Corvette which may be the key to everything. What has caught his attention is the sheriff’s department’s pretty new deputy...
Customer Reviews:
Dullest First Half of a Book I've read in years.......2007-09-06
There are a lot of books about the Blanco County Game Warden who is the hero of this book so someone must like them. The first half was just terrible. I only kept reading because I try to finish all books, no matter how dull. In the second half of the book the focus shifts from the game warden and his even duller rural county law enforcement buddies and looks at the bad guys. That part is interesting, there just isn't enough of it to save the book. It is way too late for that. Also the big tough game warden turns into Beaver Cleaver at the 8th grade dance when faced with the pretty, competent, smart, insightful, brave, strong, female deputy. I guess the author had his eye on a screenplay and wanted to make sure there was a strong, central female character. He just went a little overboard. Like every single "thriller" written in the last ten years the cover blurbs say it's funny and fun. Believe me it is neither.
Return to Blanco County.......2006-10-26
Book four of the Blanco County Mysteries presents a story of a driverless SUV in the flooded river, a missing corvette, blackmailing of a kinky Texas state senator, debates of high-fence hunting, mistaken identities, murder, and sexual depravity. Another good book for Ben Rehder. Characters continue to build in this addition to the Blanco community, many of them being as oddball as any character out of a Carl Hiaassen or Tim Dorsey novel. We get the return of Game Warden John Marlin, Sheriff Garza, Phil Colbey, and your favorite rednecks, Red Obrien and Billy Don Craddock. Good central story in this book but the side story with Red & Billy Don seems to be reaching just to include them in the book. But if they weren't in the book at all, it would be a shame. Overall, another good outing as we head to Blanco County. Rehder is really coming into his own now and people are starting to take notice of him.
Author Knows His Texans.......2006-08-18
According to my son-in-law, this author has Blanco County "down pat" and the reason he says that is because he used to live up around Medina, Texas and feels like he has known the characters mentioned in the book. My son-in-law wants me to read all the books by Mr.Rehder and I might take him up on it, once all his buddies have finished reading them.
Also, the service from Amazon.com was excellent!
Guilt Triip-A hoot.......2005-10-08
Ben Rehder has done it again. John Marlin and company are off on a funny mystery plot. Enjoyable reading, as usual.
4.5 Stars.......2005-09-24
Rehder took some of his great wit out of this book. While it is excellent, it is a bit more serious and not quite as much fun as his previous books. The characters are fantastic, let them be funnier (and screwier) in the next book.

The complete set of five books.
Book Description
The Woman's Book of Yoga and Health is the first comprehensive book about women's health issues and how to treat them with yoga. The authors offer a complete yoga program for general health as well as pose sequences that address specific health problems—all in the Iyengar tradition, which targets health needs more than other forms of yoga. For example, in the first part of the book, Patricia Walden has organized three chapters showing yoga poses with clear instructions that tell how to get into each pose and describe its benefits: chapter one is the Essential Sequence for all women, and includes modifications for people who cannot or should not do all the poses; chapter two is the Restorative Sequence for stress relief and relaxation; chapter three contains advanced poses that energize and tone. The second part is presented in four sections that broadly represent the stages of a woman's life: teen years and early twenties, later twenties and thirties, midlife, and wisdom years. Each section contains chapters offering specific information about a particular health issue from author Linda Sparrowe, as well as sequences of yoga poses from Patricia Walden that address the problem. For example, the back care chapter includes information about common back problems and their causes (scoliosis, arthritis, lordosis, sciatica, kyphosis, among others) with an emphasis on: emotional and psychological roots of some back problems; physiological information about the spine and back muscles; general information about how yoga addresses different areas of the back; and finally, Patricia Walden's sequences of poses that target different back problems with the goal of not only relieving back pain but of strengthening, and healing old injuries and misalignments. Sections of the book include: Teens and Early 20s: Eating disorders, menstrual health, immune support 20s and 30s: Back care, pregnancy, headaches Midlife: Depression, menopause, digestion Wisdom Years: Osteoporosis, postmenopause, the heart The final section of the book includes listings of yoga centers, instructional videos, yoga equipment, and where to go for more information about yoga.
Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2006-10-30
Comprehensive, well presented and informative book. I would have like to have seen more on pregnancy though.
This is excellent. I would LOVE a disc accompaniment.......2006-08-11
I've done Bikram yoga for two years and am trying to broaden my experience. This book is one of the best I've found. It includes several complete, balanced sequences to do at home, which is a concern of mine since many dvds don't deliver a balanced workout and many books don't help a novice construct one. I am 48 and it addresses physical issues of mine with knowledge and compassion -- and I'm buying my 16-year-old daughter a copy, for the same reason. She will have to share it with me.
The only way this book could be improved would be if the authors would issue a dvd or audio cd of the sequences, so I could focus on doing them instead of reading the directions.
Lots of Great information.......2006-04-03
This focuses on the Iyengar technique and shows how to use the props they are so fond of in that tradition. A wealth of valuable health information for women. I feel that one would need a live class in order to truly be sure they were doing things right (ie. in the Iyengar tradition- wink wink).
A good addition to your yoga library.
Yoga Teacher with over 10 years of experience.......2006-03-29
A great read for the beginner and advanced women practitioner. Great for teachers needing more substance in identifying what a women practitioner wants to hear. The information is detailed and very easy to understand.
A great book for women.......2006-02-27
Effective solutions for women using yoga to increase their health and well-being. Very well organized book. It is easy to find what you're looking for just from the table of contents. A great book for women, especially those who don't have time to practice at a yoga studio.
Book Description
The queen of vegetarian hip is back! Convinced that entertaining doesn't have to be high-stress or high-maintenance, Didi Emmons presents an alternative view: the best parties aren't meticulously planned. Crammed with innovative ideas for delightfully informal gatherings and hundreds of globally inspired, big-flavored vegetarian recipes, Entertaining for a Veggie Planet proves that having friends over whether for the season finale of a favorite TV show or for a book group discussion is not only easy, it's fun. From dips and cold bites (Malaysian Spring Rolls) to main dishes (Shiitake Mac "n" Cheese), from brunch (Cardamon Blueberry Cake) to "sweet eats" (Oreo Key Lime Pie), Emmons's dishes offer endless possibilities for vegetarians, vegans, and anyone else in search of a satisfying meal. Her creative menus ("Vegetarian Solutions to Turkey Day") and her spirit of fun ("if you're serving only one food, make it homemade ice cream") will put all cooks in the mood to share.
Customer Reviews:
way beyond standard veggie fare.......2007-01-23
Both of Didi Emmons cookbooks are among my most reliable recipe sources. As someone who's been a vegetarian for years and who also cooks for serious carnivores, I love that I can find recipes that pair ingredients I would not come up with on my own. Favorite recipes in this book include cambodian tomato soup, pomegranate walnut dip (muhammara,) hazelnut mushroom burgers, and chard and eggplant salad.
entertaining for a veggie planet.......2006-04-07
the best recipe book i have ever read and used
Creative and delicious recipes - plus it's a riot to read!.......2004-05-02
This book is worth the price for her pan-fried tofu recipe alone. Indisputably the BEST way to prepare tofu. Even people who are confirmed tofu haters love this method.
My only minor quibble with Didi is that she (page 219) eats fish on occasion and thus considers herself a "95% vegetarian". For a vegan, the suggested use of "fish sauce" in a vegetarian recipe book is annoying. However Didi does suggest alternatives - and her recipes are fine without it.
A good friend suggested that the lone negative reviewer may have substituted some other yeast for the nutritional yeast called for in many recipes, I'm sure she's correct. Folks, there is NO substitute, you need genuine nutritional yeast (mild and cheesy) - NOT brewer's yeast (bitter), and definitely not (shudder) baker's yeast!
This book rocks!.......2004-03-20
The recipes in the book are fabulous. I have tried several recipes and they have all been a hit - the kind that will get your friends to ask for the recipe (even the non-vegetarian ones!)
The recipes are very simple yet creative. I have "read" the book cover to cover, and everything looks so delicious and interesting that I cannot wait to try more of them out. Sometimes I find when I buy a cookbook that I only wind up caring for a few recipes in the whole book. I don't think it'll be the case with this one!
I have bought several copies of the book to give to friends, meat eating ones included.
Good Commentary, Bad Recipes.......2004-03-18
I purchased this book several months ago, in hopes of delightful recipes even non-vegitarians would love. Since then, out of all the meals I have prepared, about 50% of them were just plain disgusting!! Some of the recipes were so bad we couldnt even choke them down, and ended up throwing them away and heading for the nearest fast food.
If you are good in the kitchen, you could probably fix some of the recipes; As, I have thought of better things I could do the next time I prepared the meal... If there ever will be a next time!
On top of the gross outcome, most of the recipes call for unusual, hard to find, ingredients. She includes a glossary that recomends where to find the strangest ingredients (usually from various ethnic markets). Living in a small town, ethnic markets are few and far between... and definatly out of the way for saturday morning shopping.
On a lighter note: She does have alot of helpful tips and comments mixed in among the recipes, which i really enjoyed (I wish every cookbook included her commentary)...
And of the recipes that were good, they were really WONDERFUL!
I think Didi Emmons relies entirely too much on her cat's taste approval for her recipes... or perhaps she has burned out her human taster's tasteing sense and thats how she was able to publish these recipes.
I guess I would only recomend this book to experienced cooks, who live in large cities with several different ethnic markets around (Indian, Asian, Latin, Middle-Eastern, Mexican, etc. etc.).

Showmanship was something I never understood when I was growing up. It seemed like it was unspoken gospel. People told me that this was the way to do things and that was forbidden in showmanship classes, but still I never really understood why. Finally now I have a concise guide to every question my students can ask me about this mysterious and until now dreaded class!!

Retelling of as story from Shandong/Shantung province.......2004-10-05
This is a story about a poor farming family and their emperor who loved to watch cricket fights. The Emperor ordered a new tax to be paid by everyone and this tax was to be paid for in crickets. The father was worried because of little rain the past 3 years produced little money and no money to pay his taxes. The Cheng family's only hope would be to catch a fighting cricket. One evening the father hear the chirp of a cricket and called for his son to be a bamboo tube and they caught a nice big cricket! The son didn't see the cricket and just wanted to take a peek at it, and when he did the cricket got free and off the son when chasing after the cricket. The son followed the cricket until he was so tired he could go no further. All of a sudden a voice spoke and asked the book what was wrong. The boy told the man his story and said he'd do anything to get the cricket back. The old man asked if the boy would take the place of the cricket and he replied if only I could. The next morning the father had a small red cricket hop into his hand... his was really his son.
I'm not going to give the ending away, but I really enjoyed this retelling of an ancient Chinese tale. At the very end of the book is information on when the "Fighting Cricket" was recorded and information on it's original author Pu Songling. There is also a glossary, but it is only English word your child might not be familar with .

Book Description
As globalization continues, the phenomenon of microregionalism, at the subnational and cross-border level, is becoming increasingly important. This book provides an analysis of such processes in East Asia, examining the specifics of corporation production and investment networks that link parts of Japan, Taiwan and China.
Sasuga reinterprets conventional views of China's integration with the world economy by stressing the vital contribution of microregionalism, and the ways in which local state and non-state actors have been able to work together to build innovative cross-border governance relations. To illustrate these processes, he looks in detail at the particular case of the electronics industry-the most important economic sector in terms of imports and exports in East Asian countries-as an agent of microregional integration.
Making a significant contribution to the research on regionalism and multi-level governance in East Asia, this book will appeal to those interested in international political economy and Asian Studies.

Warwick China Co. book review.......2005-10-24
I was totally impressed by the Warwick China book by John Rader which I bought from Amazon.com. The entire book is excellent and was exactly what I was hoping for, and then some. This hard-cover book has a great history of the Warwick China Co. in the front, then section by section about the products it produced, complete with lots of high quality photos. Best of all, this book has easy to understand estimated values of each item, which helped me price several Warwick pieces I currently own. This is an invaluable reference book for any Warwick collector or dealer.

Book Description
One of every seven flowering plants on earth is an orchid. Interest in growing orchids has risen dramatically in recent years, and many new varieties that can be grown in the home without a greenhouse have been developed. Research biologist and full-time garden writer Judy White now brings her expertise--and her stunning photographs--to this much needed book for the expanding world of home orchid growers.
Customer Reviews:
beginner orchidist.......2007-05-13
I originally bought this book for the descriptions of the orchids, but found a lot of basic orchid care information. I have several orchid books, and this is one of three I use the most.
Still can't identify my orchid.......2007-04-06
My girl friend left me with four orchids when she departed to take care of her sick parents. These were definitley the dregs of her 20+ collection. Surprisingly, I've been able to get two of them to bloom, but even all these pictures can't help me identify the blomming orchid.
Excellent for instructions on how to take care of the plants; however, I will have to report back later if their procedures worked for me!
A Gem of a Book.......2007-02-27
An excellent book with cultural information that goes well beyond what's in most beginner books, yet is accessible and easy to understand. The 300 gorgeous color plates, if overly saturated with color,at times, are restricted to a satisfying mix of genera, both species and hybrids. This book is compact and impossible to keep open and would benefit from a much deserved larger format. Highly recommended.
EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR YOUR LIBRARY.......2006-01-13
I grow and collect orchids strictly as a hobby. I first purchased this particular work at the time of it's publication and have been using it ever since. The photographs are wonderful and I have found that the 300 + orchids covered in this book are truely that...covered and covered quite well. The author's text, as to discriptions and "how to grow," are extremely useful. The grower/collector must realize though, that as the title of the book states, this covers more than 300 orchids. Needless to say, there are many, many more out there and If one wishes to own just one book that lists all of them, then be aware this one does not. That being said, I have yet to find a book that does list all of the hundreds and hundreds of varities and thousands of hybrids. I shoud think that this would be an impossible undertaking as each year these numbers increase many fold. I personally own several dozen books on the subject and am constantly adding to them. This is a good book, one that should be added to the many others you will no doubt purchase if you pursue this wonderful hobby. I recommend this one highly.
Not very practical.......2005-11-03
Depending on what you're looking for, this book is not for everyone, definitely not for the beginners. There're very little instructions on how to cultivate orchids. I find the binding of the book awkward. The pictures are of great quality though.

Book Description
In a career that has spanned more than forty years, Matthew Carter has designed many of the typefaces that we see every day in and on publications, books, signs, and screens. Carter's celebrated typefaces include such stalwarts as Galliard, Mantinia, and Verdana. In 1975, he created the now-pervasive Bell Centennial specifically for use in phone books. Publications including Sports Illustrated, the Daily News, Wired, and the Washington Post, along with cultural institutions such as the Walker Arts Center and The Victoria & Albert Museum, have all commissioned Carter fonts.
Typographically Speaking: The Art of Matthew Carter entered the field in the days of hand-cut punches and hot-metal type, and has continued to innovate through the eras of photocomposition and digital design. Essays discuss the form of his work, his position and use of typographic history, and his technological innovation. All of his fonts are reproduced in full for reference, and illustrations place his designs in context.

the personal is political.......2004-05-21
Green writes an engaging account of her life in this volume. She grew up with an abusive father and mother whose own educational goals were thwarted. From this beginning, she becomes a local pioneer in the nursing and hospital administration worlds of Dallas in the 1960s and 1970s.
I found the book well written by showing how an individual's actions can affect larger civil rights activities.
The lack of a bibliography or secondary sources for the book does detract from the overall ideas Green presents. I would have liked some corroboration of her memories beyond her immediate family. Other than this concern, the book is a great read for the civil rights movement, the history of nursing, or about the life of black women in East Texas.
