Another Great Read By This Author.......2007-09-28
I found a new author and I want to read everything she has written! A friend loaned me this book and I couldn't put it down. It's suspenseful and keeps you guessing from one chapter to the next. One minute you think you have it all figured out and then you realize you are totally off track! Keeps you in suspense til the very end. A great read.
This is one of the best mystery authors on earth- once again a must read/own!.......2006-08-04
Are you looking for a book that pulls you into its world, has you hanging on the edge of your seat- like your watching a movie on t.v. Then you guessed it, this is the one. There is never a dull moment in a carlene thompson book, so this one is no different than the rest. You are guessing who is the killer among us? There are six characters who have been friends since childhood, slowly one by one they are being killed- but who could it be. No one is safe, and who will be next? Keep guessing. There are a bunch of twists throughout the book, which keeps your attention. You won't be disappointed when the killer is revealed. A must Read!!! Don't miss!! Its so cheap used and s&h is only 3.49. Never read a carlene thompson book. This was my very first one and I still love it. I now own her entire collection!
Fun Book.......2006-05-24
This was a fun, fast paced read. There were so many twist and turns in the plot, that my list of suspects kept changing, and I still didn't get it right. In the end( and don't peek), when you find out who the killer is, you'll be thinking, yes, that person really is the most likely, but you'll never quess who it is while reading. The book is actually quite funny at times, without being over the top. I read it in one sitting. If you like very serious thrillers, this book is probably not for you. This was almost like reading "Scary Movie" in book form. It is campy, and very enjoyable.
It's a mystery..........2006-03-22
why this book has almost five stars! I found the dialogue annoyingly stilted, the characters idiotic, and the plot uninspired. There are a lot better mystery and suspense authors out there, such as Lisa Scottoline, Jonathan Kellerman, and Jeffrey Deaver.
Always keeps you guessing.......2005-10-24
Carlene Thompson has written some amazing books. I love to read and I love her thrillers. She keeps you guessing till the very end. There are times when I thought I knew who was behind the killings etc, but I'm never right. She's a great author. Very underated. This is just as good as all her other books but this time there are more murders and Laurel has to try and find out who is killing all her old friends. This will keep you on the edge of your seat and you won't be able to put it down. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes a good thriller.

MOVE OVER MARY HIGGINS CLARK...THE HEIR APPARENT IS HERE..........2004-12-22
If you are a reader who enjoys novels of suspense, then surely you will find this one to be a rip-roaring good read. There are enough red herrings, enough twists and turns, to keep one guessing until the very end. So, hang on to your seat and enjoy the ride!
The premise here is simple. Thirteen years ago, six teenage girls who had formed a secret club called the Six of Hearts, decide to let loose, drink, and dabble in a psuedo satanic ritual in a deserted farmhouse in Wheeling, West Virginia. Before the night is over, one of them ends up dead. The surviving five swear to a pact of secrecy to never reveal what really happened.
Thirteen years later, one of them dies a violent death at the hand of an unknown person who leaves behind a clue that those who were members of the Six of Hearts club are at risk. Laurel Damron, a flower shop owner and one of the club members, begins to receive chilling mementos which can only mean one thing: that she, too, is marked for death. One by one, all the remaining club members claim to have received frightening mail which lead them all to the same conclusion as Laurel.
Who will be next, and who is responsible for this? That is a question upon which the reader may well ponder, as the reader sifts through the byzantine twists in the plot. Gripping and absorbing, this novel is sure to hold the reader in suspense until the very end.

Book Description
General Alberto Bayo is possibly the one individual most responsible for Fidel Castro's military successes against the Batista regime. Find the answers to suche questions as What is the most efficient size of a guerrilla unit? How will new volunteers be trained? What should be done if the enemy fire on us by surprise?
Customer Reviews:
The book by Castro's instructor........2005-10-24
Well, four stars, within its limits. The format may put off some readers from the start, as it is a hypothetical interview, with Bayo answering questions he made up. I found it very telling as to how Bayo viewed his position in history and his own importance. As a work on guerrilla tactics and techniques, it is pretty limited and the limits reflect its age. As a work on principles of insurgency and how to be an insurgent, it is not to bad. As a historical document relating to guerrilla warfare in the western hemisphere, it is pretty informative.
Regarding tactics and techniques, it is dated. There is no need for an aspiring guerrilla to learn to turn an aircraft propeller or hand crank a car engine. Morse code is not completely obsolete, but is very close. Basic push-to-talk, unsecure, voice radios were clearly high technology the author. Rocket propelled grenade launchers were not available. Some of the chemistry in '150 Questions' is very risky, and likely to cost an amateur some fingers. But... for the time the book was written, it was the best thing going, and there are principles that still have relevance.
The principles of how to be an insurgent and run an insurgency are still relevant. The author's discussion of how to use the cell structure and the different elements of an organization are spot on, and still in use with only minor changes, usually driven by technology.
Where '150 Questions' excels is as a historical document. Bayo influenced Castro and Guevara. Castro and Guevara continue to influence communists and rebels (and wannabes) around the world. By understanding Bayo's world view a little better, the chain of ideas and values behind current, active insurgents can be understood a little better.
I do not admire Bayo, Castro, or Guevara. The causes they fought for may or may not have had merit, but they were (and in Castro's case are) utterly corrupted by their own ego and vanity. However, I respect Bayo's professionalism, that he documented his work, and his desire to pass along his knowledge.
Book Description
Of all the problems that can affect physical or mental health, none is more common than thyroid gland disturbance. None is more readily and inexpensively corrected. And none is more often untreated, and even unsuspected.
Hypothyroidism -- low thyroid function -- is one of the gland disturbances that many people suffer from without even realizing it. It can be the cause of low energy or constant fatigue that is one of the most common complaints brought to doctors. It may be responsible for chronic headaches, repeated infections, unyielding skin problems, or circulatory difficulties. Even more frightening, it can be a major factor in heart disease, lung cancer, and emphysema. And it is responsible for many emotional and mental disturbances. Hypothyroidism: The Unsuspected Illness explains low thyroid function in easy, understandable language. It tells how it may be affecting your health and your life.
Dr. Broda Barnes and Lawrence Galton tell what the thyroid gland is, how it works, the problems its dysfunction can induce. They detail case histories of patients, often thought hopeless, whose problems were discovered to be related to hypothyroidism and were cured by Dr. Barnes's simple effective techniques. And they discuss whether you too may be hypothyroid, affected by a condition even a physician may not recognize.
Included is a simple test you can make at home to discover if hypothyroidism may be the real, previously unsuspected cause of your ill health.
If you know you are hypothyroid,
Hypothyroidism: The Unsuspected Illness will answer your questions about your condition. If you suspect you maybe, if you are unsure what may be causing those chronic headaches, infections, fatigue and low energy, it may help you find the answer.

EXCELLENT.......2007-10-05
I wish all physicians would read this book!!!

Hypothyroidism.......2007-04-06
This book is outdated and has no depth for todays lifestyle issues of which hypothyroidism is an underlying cause of many of our health problems.
Not enough emphasis on iodine and its role in supporting thyroid and emphasises too much on the medical answer with thyroxine. I was disappointed and would not have purchased the book had I saw the date of it. Anything written before 1998 and by a doctor is limited and narrow.
A MUST READ.......2007-02-14
This book is amazing, a real eye opener. If you've ever tested "normal" but know you're not normal, read this book! I read it after I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and I wish I'd read it sooner as I had all the symptoms for years.
Broda Barnes saved my life!.......2006-10-30
I had such bad hypothyroidism that went undiagnosed for so long, I almost died. I finally found a doctor who diagnosed me and is treating me with Armour. He studied and trained with Dr. Barnes. If it weren't for Dr. Barnes and his unconventional methods, I'd probably be dead today. My hair turned gray overnight, I gain 110 pounds in three months and hadn't changed the way I had been eating all my life yet I gained all the weight so fast and at the time I was doing aerobics and suddenly I no longer could because of the fatigue and joint pain. I starting falling asleep during the day. My immune system went bad and I ended up with bronchitis and pneumonia several times. My cholesterol and blood pressure skyrocketed and I ended up with heart disease. I became clinically depressed and felt suicidal. I had short term memory loss and couldn't remember to do my work, pay bills, couldn't remember where my car was parked, couldn't remember hardly anything any more. I almost lost my job and my life. I had one foot in the grave and I was only 30 years old! Conventional doctors and methods failed me. Read this book! Get on Armour and do the body basal temperture taking.
Some people are hypothyroid, but the TSH test doesn't even show it, like what happened to me. If you think you're hypothyroid, but your doctor and the TSH don't agree, read this book, go to the Armour web site and find a doctor in your area who will prescribe Armour and forget about the TSH, do the body basal instead. Armour is natural and has all the hormones that your thyroid natural puts out. The synthetic stuff only puts out T4, your body needs more than just T4. Some people like me, their body doesn't convert T4 to T3 so the synthetic thyroid medicine doesn't work well. I first tried the synthetic stuff and felt horrible. I then tried Armour and within hours I felt like a new person! Now my life has completely changed for the better and I have Dr. Barnes and my doctor to thank. Read this book and save your life!
Criminal misinformation....defunct theories.......2006-08-06
I've had to self-educate on thyroid problems since previous doctors had screwed me up. I saw this book and read it and I became very angry. When milk gets outdated and is no longer healthy to drink it starts to smell. This book should positively reek. The information in this book is more than a third of a century out of date. Barnes could be excused for not understanding basic workings of the thyroid, such as the pituitary controlling it through TSH and modern medications to treat thyroid problems, because his "theories" and "ideas" were made 40 years ago and before thi stuff had been discovered. On the other hand, you can't excuse any reader for thinking that this stuff is valid in the 21st Century.
If anyone thinks that they should be treated for thyroid problems based on the nonsense ideas in this book, they need to be educated. There's good reason why board certified doctors diss this book. The reason why fake doctors and "natural" medicine people like this book is it gives them an angle to get customers. I don't want to be a meal ticket for those frauds. Health is too important to mess with.

GREAT USED BOOK.......2007-08-23
THIS BOOK IS EASY TO READ AND FOLLOW THE RECIPES ARE NOT COMPLICATED WONDERFUL FOR ANYONE LEARNING TO COOK KOSHER OR JEWISH.
Best Jewish cookbook!.......2007-02-05
My mom received this little cookbook for her wedding 40 years ago, so these were the Jewish recipes I grew up on in my household. I have continued her tradition in using this as my main source of Jewish recipes. People always tell me I make the best matzah balls and latkes they've ever tasted, and I attribute that 100 percent to tips in this cookbook. A previous reviewer mentioned the noodle kugel and stuffed cabbage recipes as well - both of which my mom became famous for!
As close to tradition and Gramma as you'll find.......2006-11-09
My stained, strained and well-worn 1956 copy is my most loved Jewish cookbook; my Mom cooked all holiday recipes from this and many more. Sara Kasdan's writing style and the anecdotes are priceless. Even if you don't cook anymore, buy it just for a wonderful read and the taste of yesterday.
Can't beat it for good old favorites.......2003-05-15
Some of the directions were a bit complicated to follow, or didn't match what I knew the recipies to be. However, for the most part, this is right out of my memories of my great Nana!
Good basic guide to traditional Jewish cooking........1999-07-17
Along with The Joy of Cooking for everyday basic cooking, I learned to prepare tradiditional Ashkenazic (Eastern European) Jewish dishes from Love and Knishes when it was first published 40 years ago when I was a newly-wed. The recipes and preparation instructions in Love and Knishes are simple, the ingredients are usually staples and the commentary is very funny, even if now viewed as, perhaps, stereotypical. The recipes are easily adaptable to today's guidelines to healthier (lower fat content) guidelines. I'm giving this as a gift to my soon to be new daughter-in-law. If your mom didn't keep kosher or prepare traditional dishes for holidays, sabbath etc. then Love and Knishes is a good place to start learning.

horrible.......2007-05-24
Bernard Mayes mutilates the reading of this wonderful book. He sounds like Gollum from the Lord of the Rings. His reading is just horrible. Some word pronouncements are barely audible, the sounding of the letter s, makes it sound like he has some teeth missing. I am continually having to adjust my sound dial as he is up and down with the sound of his voice. I have no idea why blacstone audio went with this guy.
Book Description
Loving tribute to a legendary canine
For centuries the Saint Bernard was an indispensable part of the landscape of Switzerland and a lifeline for many stranded travelers near the Monastery that gave the breed its name. The Saint has inspired artists, poets and a long list of writers. Now comes an all-new book on this gentle giant of alpine legend that is bound to inform and delight everyone who has fallen under the spell of these spectacular dogs. The book includes fourteen information-filled chapters covering breed history, true stories of Saint courage, choosing and caring for a Saint puppy, adult maintenance, the standard, showing, breeding, health care and a view of Saints around the world. Lavishly illustrated with photos in black and white and color.

The New St Bernard.......2000-07-04
This book has been written by long time St Bernard fanciers and conformation judges, the Gwilliams of Coatham Kennels, England. Listed in the contents are subjects not previously included or only briefly touched on in other St Bernard books. The addition of a Hereditary Disorders/Conditions chapter is a bonus, as are the sections on Weaning and Socialisation. Feeding Tables which list the St Bernards daily requirements and the function of individual vitamins and minerals (including the results of deficiency or excess of these), are comprehensive. The aged St Bernard and Temperament are also covered in this responsibly written book. An American section, State by State, ensures that this book crosses the Atlantic. This book is right up there with the best St Bernard books I own.
Book Description
This beautifully illustrated book discusses the St. Bernard's history, characteristics and breed standard and includes up-to-date, accurate information about health concerns, puppy selection, feeding and caring for the dog.
Book Description
Grace and Freedom represents Lonergan's entry into subject matter that would occupy him throughout his lifetime. At the same time it is a manifestation of the thinking that has made him one of the world's foremost Thomist scholars.
The volume is in two parts. Part One is a new edition of "Grace and Freedom: Operative Grace in the Thought of St Thomas Aquinas", four articles written by Lonergan in 1941-42, first published in book form in 1971. This edition includes new notes and indices. Part Two is Lonergan's doctoral dissertation, "Gratia Operans", submitted to the Gregorian University, Rome, in 1940. Published here in full for the first time, the dissertation provides important context and background for the articles in the first part. Lonergan's thesis is that, from the sixteenth century onwards, commentators on Thomas Aquinas lacked historical consciousness, raised questions that Thomas had never considered, and obfuscated the issues. Lonergan's achievement consists in having retrieved the actual position of Thomas by adopting a historical approach that has reconstructed his intellectual development on grace. The majority of contemporary theologians now agree with the implementation of the historical method. What Lonergan also adds is a unique diagnosis of the mistakes made by the modern scholastic authors in their treatment of grace. Throughout this work, Lonergan discovers in Thomas a mind in constant development, displaying radical shifts on fundamental questions. Together the two parts not only reveal an essential step in Lonergan's own development, but also make an impressive contribution to Thomist studies.
Customer Reviews:
a key insight.......2007-01-20
This was Lonergan's doctoral dissertation. It focuses on the relationship between divine activity and human responsibility, between grace and freedom. To what extent are our good works our own, and to extent, or in what way, are they the product of God's grace? This issue is of fundamental importance for Christian theology. A deeply theoretical problem, its practical implications can be seen in the difference between the theological ethics of such thinkers as John Courney Murray and Reinhold Niebuhr.
I have found the first chapter in particular to be helpful. It traces the history of the development of the theoretical category of nature. Nothing in this world is purely natural; all is a mixture of nature, sin, and grace, but having the neutral term of nature allows theologians to avoid extremes that view humanity (including culture) as either absolutely fallen and thus totally helpless, or completely redeemed, and thus able to achieve anything on its own. Lonergan compares this to the theory of gravity: nothing actually falls at 9.8 meters per second squared, but this abstraction makes for some clear thinking about actual, concrete falling bodies, and thus, is indispensably helpful for very practical problems (such as, Is scripture the only source of truth? What is the relationship between church and state?)
The rest of the work focuses on Thomas Aquinas's treatment of the relationship between grace and freedom (our will and choices). It's very complicated, exploring such distinctions as actual and habitual grace, operative and cooperative grace, healing and elevating grace, their interrelations, and their relations with the will, merit, the theological virtues, etc. By a historical treatment of Thomas's thought, Lonergan seeks to present Thomas free from the ahistorical readings of decadent scholastic Thomists.
A great secondary source for this work is Michael Stebbins' "The Divine Initiative."
Worth the read..........2007-01-12
Anyone who buys this book knows what they're getting since it's certainly not for a mainstream audience. But as far as an entry point into Lonergan's appreciation of Aquinas the book is a must have. The editors of the collected edition have done an excellent job. Latin quotations from Aquinas have been translated afresh into English in the footnotes and there is a ready guide to Lonergan's latin in the back. An excellent index also helps the student of Lonergan and of course, of Aquinas. The addition of Lonergan's PhD thesis as well as the previously published edition was a masterful stroke since it gives a little more detail on Lonergan's thinking. I for one, found the dissertation far easier to read and comprehend than the previously published work which I had labored over for some time before getting my hands on this copy.
As far as the content of the work, it demonstrates Lonergan's mastery of his subject and the viability of his method - attend to the data before judging people!
The student of Lonergan will already own this. The student of Aquinas should seriously consider picking it up.
Book Description
"Best Garden Color for Florida" is a must-have for Florida gardeners and professionals who love garden color! It is not only loaded with 575 spectacular photos, but also includes reams of easy-to-understand information about use and care of 150 terrific Florida plants. The plant information is complemented with chapters filled with ideas about color for butterflies, sun, shade, salt, and wind.
The book is a result of decades of plant research by the author to determine which plants and planting strategies give the most color for the least amount of care. The author personally grew most of the plants, giving her practical experience with all aspects of the plants' use and maintenance. It is a companion to the best-selling "Easy Gardens for South Florida", which will be adapted to cover the whole state in 2004. No information is repeated in either book. The two work together to give you the best garden color for Florida.

Customer Reviews:
Florida gardening.......2007-10-03
This book has wonderful graphics and comments that are very helpful to a new Florida gardner.
Best Garden Color for Florida.......2005-10-21
It is very difficult to find a good reference gardening book for South Florida specially for the Miami area. This book along with her other book "Easy Gardens for South Florida" are a must for anyone trying to garden in South Florida. Great information on all the plants listed in the book.
Coloring a Florida garden........2005-10-11
This very splashy book with big type, excellent large color photos on big pages is a useful guide if you are looking to brighten up your Florida garden. Crawford provides more information about how to care for each plant than is available in most books. The format of two facing pages for each plant with the information arranged in a common format and organization makes it very easy to use.
Her carefully dealing with suggesting companion plantings and showing their combined impact in a garden is extremely useful.
There are some inconsistencies and editing errors for example on pages 122-123 Butterfly Bush, there is extensive comment about it being a better plant for North Florida and very short-lived or unsuccessful in South Florida yet she recommends it for zones 10a to 11.
Obviously her priority in plant choice in this book is color and her criteria of can she get it to perform. From my perspective I question her advocating the use of spray liquid fertilizers on nectar plants without mentioning the negative impact on butterfly catepillars of these chemicals.
I got the book as a gift--and a lovely one it was--but I have not yet become convinced to spring for the companion volume "Easy Gardens for South Florida. There are many ways in which they would make more sense together than they do seperately but I have been waiting for the new edition to come out.
Some of the plants e.g Forsythia Sage which she raves about I and the major nursuries here in Sarasota and Venice have been unable to secure.
Great book!.......2005-06-07
I've lived in Florida for five years and always wanted a lot of color in my garden. Most of my efforts failed, except for annuals which I constantly have to replace. This book introduced me to a whole new group of easy perennials that bloom a lot and last for years! And each plant description has more care information than any other book I've ever seen! This book has changed my garden from drab to gorgeous!
Fabulous for Floridians!.......2005-06-07
This book is geared toward our Florida gardens. I am a South Florida landscaper and use this book constantly on sales calls. It is a super reference book chock full of pertinent info & color photos. It is easy to read and covers all aspects of plant needs from lighting, watering, soil & space requirements, fertilization & even pest cautions. The variety of plants listed by Ms. Crawford are readily available in most local nurseries and do well here in Florida. This is exactly the kind of book we Florida landscapers have been waiting for!

The focus was more on the music than on the dancing that would be done to the music.
Book Description
Bruce Edward Hall may have an English name and a Connecticut upbringing, but for him a trip to Chinatown, New York, is a visit to the ghosts of his Chinese Ancestors -- Ancestors who helped create the neighborhood that is really as much a transplanted Cantonese village as it is a part of a great American city. Among these Ancestors are missionaries and reprobates, businessmen and scholars. There is the patriarch with three wives (two in China, one in New York), who arrived in Chinatown just as it was beginning to take shape, and who eventually became a key player in the infamous Tong Wars that ravaged the neighborhood at the turn of the century. There is the grandfather, whose nickname, Hock Shop, bespoke his reputation as Chinatown's favorite bookie. There is the dashing aviator whose dogfight in the skies over Brooklyn made him Chinatown's first hero in the way against Japan, and the matriarch who was purchased as a bride for $1,200 when the ratio of Chinese men to women was two hundred to one. And all of them shared the experience of the great-aunt who emigrated to New York at the age of eight months, but lived in fear of deportation for the next fifty years because this country refused to allow Chinese to become American citizens.
In Tea That Burns, Bruce Edward Hall uses the stories of these and others to tell the history of Chinatown, starting with the tumultuous journey from an ancient empire ruled by the nine dragons of the universe to a bewildering land of elevated trains, solitary labor, and violent discrimination. The world they constructed was built of backbreaking labor and poetry contests; gambling dens and Cantonese opera; Tong Wars, festivals, firecrackers, incense, and food -- always food, to celebrate every conceivable occasion and to confound the ever-meddlesome "White Devils" as they attempt to master the mysteries of chop sticks and stir-fry. A vivid and tactile story, rich with the sights, sounds, and sensations of Chinatown then and now, Tea That Burns reads like a novel, but is history at its best.

Tea That Refreshes.......2002-12-25
Tea That Burns was an unexpected pleasure to read. Not only is the writing fresh and engrossing, but the overall account of his family history back several generations is fascinating and rings of authencity. I have read numerous interesting Chinese-American memoirs, and what makes this one especially unique, is the ability of the author to connect the events occurring in U. S. History with concurrent events in China's history. This interweaving informs the reader in ways that are absent when the China context is not provided.
As a second generation Chinese whose father was a paper son, and whose parents had an arranged marriage, I already knew many of the factual aspects of the book. However, I never could entirely understand the 'process' underlying the facts until I read Tea That Burns. The author filled in many of these gaps with his eye for detail. The documentation at the back of the book reveals that the author knows his Chinese immigration history thoroughly, but fortunately he does not bog the reader down by inserting an abundance of citations within the body of the text.
I felt invigorated and refreshed after reading this excellent book.
Tea That Burns.......2001-07-10
Yes, it is a great book! I finish in one afternoon. I couldn't down the book once I started reading.... Mr. Hall provides a very rich history of the Chinatown in New York City during the mid-1800s period. He is succeeded to "enable the reader to smell history." In the book, Mr. Hall describes his father "denied" his identity of Chinese which shows the typical dilemma of the new generation of Chinese immigrants in the United States. However, I was "confused" by the subtitle, "a family memoir of chinatwon". I expect that the book mainly describes the author's family history, rather than concerns on the hisotry of Chinatown history.

More descendents of Chinese immigrants should share stories........1999-06-03
My mother grew up in the mining camps at the turn of the century, (1900) - it would be wonderful if more of the Chinese descendents would write their stories - it was surely a life of great hardship, and a history that needs to be shared. This is a wonderful story of family and life, societal views, prejudice and pain. Many expressions I heard throughout my childhood referred to the Chinese..."...didn't have a Chinaman's chance."..."...the rule was that the sun was not to set on any Chinese in town..." - what torment these people had to endure - yet we have very little literature on this subject. Mr. Hall has provided us with a wonderful, informative read and some true-life views that U.S.History certainly needs.
"Tea that Burns": After an hour you're hungry again........1999-02-10
I read Mr. Hall's narration and found it simultaneously interesting and dissapointing. Interesting because he cleverly portrayed the historical side of the story from an angle I could relate to, with credible detail that in and of itself made for the price of the book (Great Photos!). Disappointing because the individuals contained within were only briefly portrayed and therefore the personal aspect, that in my respectful opinion lends dimension to all historical fact, was somewhat disjointed. I look forward to Mr. Hall's next work to fill in the gaps and continue what he began.
