Book Description
A nine-year-old boy is found murdered at the bottom of a well near a beach resort in southern Italy. In what looks like a hopeless case for Guido Guerrieri, counsel for the defence, a Senegalese peddler is accused of the crime. More than a perfectly paced legal thriller, this relentless suspense novel transcends the genre. A powerful attack on racism, and a fascinating insight into the Italian judicial process, it is also an affectionate portrait of a deeply humane hero.
Gianrico Carofiglio is an anti-Mafia judge in Italy. This is his first novel, a bestseller in Italy and now the subject of a television series. It has won a number of prizes, including the Marisa Rusconi award.
Customer Reviews:
Unusual murder mystery.......2006-01-03
Rather more information on the procedures of Italian justice than I wanted, but a great narrator, and the emotional content of his relationships - to his (ex)wife, his new lover, and to the accused - were well developed. The book has a satisfying although not unexpected ending.
It's clear you don't want to be Sengalese and a transient vendor in Italy when a child disappears, but it's a story that could probably happen anywhere. An interesting book. Had it been an American/British murder mystery, we probably would have found out "who dun it" - if you need that, it's not here.
A very good book.......2005-12-13
The author is a working criminal lawyer (an investigating magistrate, sort of like a cross between a DA and a judge, if I understand correctly).
In any event, it's clear that he knows of what he speaks in this marvellous Italian trial procedural. Carofiglio has an acid wit, and the book is very amusing.
I found the character development and the romance less interesting, as it was not captured as well as the criminal case. But that's not why one reads this sort of book, anyway.

Windsingers - Humanity Tempted to Power.......2000-10-07
In the first book of the Windsinger series, Harpy's Flight, Lindholm describes a struggle to cease from mourning, to accept the worthwhileness of life despite the fact of death and loss. In this second book of the series, Lindholm goes on to ask whether, after all, there is nobility in common humanity, or whether we should aspire to graduate, to transform into creatures with longevity and power. The Windsingers are mistresses of the weather and political intrigue. They are as fascinating and scary a women's club as the Bene Gerit or the Aes Sedai in other fantasy worlds. In this book, Ki's lover Vandien attempts to retrieve a sacred relic of the Windsingers. As a reward, his painful and humiliating facial scar will supposedly be healed. Meanwhile Ki unwittingly becomes the agent of the Windsingers' most powerful enemy, the Wizard Dresh. But who can really be trusted? What is the real reward, and what the actual cost of success? This is a great story, with plenty humor, suspense, and good sense. These books should never have gone out of print and I trust a new edition will be published soon. In the meantime, it is well worth its cost on the used book exchange.
Fantasy probably can't get much better.......2000-04-16
I was fifteen when I found this book and the third part of theWindsinger trilogy on the leftover table of a local bookstore. By aninner impulse I bought them and never regretted it. If I had known beforehand how well written and deeply involving these books were, I probably would have been willing to pay much more than I had...the fate of these books tells us how easily very good novels can be overlooked in the neverending line of average fantasy books they are published along with.
As I said in the review to "Harpy's Flight," Lindholm created one of the most vivid worlds in fantasy writing you'll encounter. She walks on the grate of being able to tell the reader how this world and all its powers work and still leaving it enough of it secrets to keep it out of a sterile light, which would reveal it all. She highly succeeded in that. For example, you will find out that the "Windsingers," girls and women who form some sort of cult, are able to steer the weather by their singing and can bring misery or wealth to whoever displeases or pleases them. Some is revealed of how they formed and what powers might lie beyond them, but Ki, one of the main characters in the book, won't find out and you aren't either. Ki can only imagine as far as she cares and so can only you.
Where character development was still, well, "developing" in Harpy's Flight, it is in very good condition here. Ki is a very strong female lead and equal to Vandien, her partner who travels along with her from time to time. What makes them so deep is that they are not perfect. They encounter sides to themselves and each other they might not like but have to get along with. This development is especially true for Ki in this trilogy, but Vandien gets his share in "Luck of the Wheels." They are imperfect, sometimes moody, have a couple of bad habits but are good at heart. In other words, they are human and have a personality and you'll hate to part with them.
If you manage to get a hold of one of these books you are in for some very enjoyable time. END

HELP IS HERE
Bipolar disorder has recently been identified as one of the most misunderstood and underdiagnosed conditions affecting children -- and it is dramatically on the rise. The Ups and Downs of Raising a Bipolar Child gives parents the sound advice and expert information they need to cope with this challenging diagnosis, and shows how to provide essential care and support for a bipolar child as well as for the rest of the family.
Customer Reviews:
A Child Psychiatrist's Review.......2005-12-29
This book is a godsend for clinicians, bipolar children, and their families. It includes every important experience, concern, quest, and resource I have ever come across in my practice full of many bipolar children and their families.
The book is written in a compassionate style and knowing vantage point that only the author-mother of a bipolar child could achieve. The brief but pointed notes from the psychiatrist at the end of each chapter provide added expertise in an artful and humble way which I think parents can really appreciate. By so placing these comments, the message is clear: we psychiatrists often learn more from our patients than they do from us. Occasionally, we have something relevant to add.
I found each chapter not only incredibly true to life, but extremely informative. Especially useful are the web sites, names of organizations and support groups, and other recources which are usually obtainable only by laboriously researching a vast number of widely varying and often unrelated sources.
To top it all off, the last chapter discusses guardianships, trusts, and other methods of financially protecting bipolar children. These issues are seldom brought up in timely fashion, if at all, by clinicians. Further, families are often totally unaware of the options, and have no guidelines for even posing the necessary questions.
Since reading this book, I have recommended it to every parent of a bipolar child who has walked into my office. For some parents, reading this book has provided a diagnostic revelation, and hope for a future which had seemed hopelessly bleak.
The seal of authenticity offered by the author-parent, as well as by the testimony of the parents who responded to her surveys is the most convincing "selling point" of this book for parents who are otherwise tired of hearing quasi-expert opinions from professionals, family, and friends.
I have also recommended this book to my colleagues, most of whom treat only adult patients. I hope after reading this book, that they will listen with a different ear to their adult patients who describe the particular trials of parenting their children. Perhaps, rather than buying and reinforcing many a parent's guilt ridden self report that their own inconsistent parenting is the identifiable problem, informed clinicians will ask the probing questions which may uncover the real issues, and bring more undiagnosed bipolar children into much needed treatment.
Many thanks for this honest, wonderfully researched, and beautifully readable book.
A sympathetic voice.......2005-09-06
I thought I was alone in dealing with my daughter's situation. Absolutely no one in my community understood what I was going through, and blamed me for her behavior. I feel more in control, now that I've read this book. The author shares stories from others who have endured experiences similar to my own. She describes the physical condition behind Biopolar disorder in laymen's terms. Then, she gives practical sugggestions for dealing with the situation. The book is a quick-read--something you will appreciate if you need to help yourself FAST.
This is the besk book in the whole, wide world!.......2004-03-10
This book is extremely informative and helpful. I love the "notes from the couch" sections at the end of each chapter. No really good books had been written for parents before this. Thanks and conragulations to the authors (ESPCIALLY DR. CANDIDA FINK).
One of the best books on Early Onset Bipolar Disorder.......2004-02-12
This is a must for any parent with a child with Early Onset Bipolar Disorder. I very rarely highlight a book but this one now has many pink markings and I have told my husband he must read this. There are very few books on Early Onset Bipolar Disorder and this is one of three that I strongly encourage you to read.
Many believe that BP stands for bad parenting, this book dispels this myth. If any child in your family has Early Onset Bipolar Disorder I would suggest reading this book and passing it onto all the family members!!

Not enough detail.......2006-08-21
I returned this book as it did not give enough detail regarding time, nor did it give enough simple recipes. I am a new "slow cooker" & needed more help. There are much better books on the market.
Great Cookbook- easy, good food.......2001-09-13
This is not about fancy cooking or exotic ingredients. For the most part, this book is full of one pot meals that you can make with very little effort. Every recipe I have tried has been easy to make with on hand ingredients.
I particularly liked the wide variety of recipes: casserole recipes, crock pot recipes, wok recipes, one pan/pot recipes etc.
I refer to this one many times when planning meals or looking for a last minute meal to prepare.
Great work night cookbook!.......2000-07-04
I liked this cookbook so much I'm buying another for my sister. The book has easy, wholesome, one-pot meals perfect for working families.
Customer Reviews:
Buy this book before you buy a Chesapeake.......2007-01-11
I have browsed this book and if you are thinking about getting a Chesapeake you should buy this book first. It will cover many of the things I mention here in greater detail. Many people have bought Chesapeake Bay Retrievers without doing enough research and then gotten rid of their "problem" dogs. In almost all cases "the problems" were caused by the owners because they did not understand the requirements of this breed.
I have owned and trained my Chesapeakes for over 12 years now and I can tell you that they are a wonderful and unique breed. There is no other breed with the qualities of a Chesapeake. They are very intelligent, extremely loyal and dedicated to their masters, great with kids (if raised with them) and love to be part of the family, have unbelievable determination and will, and in many ways have almost human like personalities. For these reasons and others, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers make absolutely wonderful companions.
However, as Chesapeake breeders will tell you, these dogs are not for everyone. Their intelligence and energy requires a need for daily activity that challenges them physically and mentally and that is rewarding to them. They thrive when given what they interpret as a problem to solve. They respond much better to praise then they do discipline. Robotic methods of training don't work as well on Chesapeakes and for that reason many pro trainers won't train a Chesapeake because they think they are too stubborn or just dumb.
This is rarely true, but it takes a strong commitment on the owners part to provide the dog with an environment in which it thrives. Chesapeakes have a lot of self-pride and if you try to force them to do something against their will, they may often resent you and become uncooperative.
Chesapeakes love to swim, retrieve, play, hunt, or just show off their physical strength and stamina by lifting large logs and rocks out of the water for hours on end. If not given the proper physical and mental outlets a Chesapeake bores very quickly and can become destructive and depressed. For these reasons Chesapeakes do not like being left alone in a kennel for hours. Being part of the family is very important to them and they love attention. They are fine in the house but need a large fenced yard also. Again, if they are ignored or neglected, they will resent you and it will lead to destructive behavior or depression.
Other things to consider:
They are protective of their home and family and may bark at strangers. They are not naturally agressive towards strangers or other dogs, but if their protective side is overly encouraged, or if they are taunted, they could become that way.
They shed. A lot. Nuff said.
They eat a lot so they poop a lot. Nuff said.
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a very special breed and they make great family dogs and excellent hunting dogs. But they require a patient but dominant personality in their owner, training adjusted to the Chesapeakes personality with lots of positive reinforcement, love and respect as part of the family, room to run, and lots of happy and rewarding activity. If you feel you can fullfill and commit to these needs, then a Chesapeake Bay Retriever may be the right dog for you.
Eastern Waters Owner.......2006-08-07
I bought this book through Janet Horn, our dog's (Timothy Scott)beeder before she passed away.I feel Janet's insight into a Chessie's personality to be dead on.She really loved her dogs (Her home in New Jersey was filled with Chessie's) with all her heart .When I visited her the day we bought our dog I could feel that knowledge as she advised me on what to do with our dog.He is a shining example of what a Chesapeake should be- so are his puppies!Buy this book!
Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are Fun, but They are also Lots of Work.......2006-02-27
This book is very thorough and complete, covering all aspects of this breed of dog, from buying a new puppy, to training, to grooming and preparing for a dog show. If you're intrigued by this breed of dog, just keep in mind that this is a very active breed of dog, and its activity level can drive some people bonkers! This book is quick to point out this fact, and it is an important one to consider.
I'm happy with my Chesapeake Bay Retriever, but he can be quite a handful at times. My dog, through daily spoiling, weighs around 90 pounds, which is about 15 pounds larger than the average male of this breed. He isn't fat, just more muscular than average, which makes him even more fun to handle. What this book says about this breed is pretty accurate, based on my personal experience. These dogs are hearty, active, and have unique personalities. One needs to keep these facts in mind before making this breed a member of one's home.
If you are interested in knowing more about this breed of dog, then this is an excellent book to buy. It will quickly familiarize you with the basics of this breed, and let you know what you can expect if you decide to add a Chesapeake Bay Retriever to your household.
The New Complete Chesapeake Bay Retriever.......2005-09-03
Very informative book for new (and old) chessie owners.
A 'Must-Have' For Bay Shoppers.......2000-03-14
When I was in the market for a medium to large sized sporting dog, I began to research dogs such as the Chesapeake Bay retriever and of course the Golden and Yellow retriever. My search led me closer to the Bay retriever because of 2 reasons: athletic ability and intelligence.
Upon closer scrutiny I soon discover from 'The New Complete Chesapeake Bay Retriever' that indead this was the superior choice over all other retrievers. The book explains that the Bay retiever is less popular than other retrievers simply because not many people have heard of this American breed. And as a benefit, over breeding has not occured with the Bay retriever. Hunters prefer the Bay over other bird dogs due to their undistracted committment to retrieve. As a family dog, they are gentle and stoic enough never to over react or bark in any situation
The book was a terrific guide for shopping for a pup and especially for raising and field training the dog as a hunter or as champion show dog.
My dog is a family pet and I owe plenty to this book for guiding me logically with the raising, training and breeding of my dog.
I discovered later that my dog's ancestry is mentioned in the book. His grandparents are previous champs and are showcased through out 'The New Complete Chesapeake Bay Retriever'.
'The New Complete Chesapeake Bay Retriever' is thorough, logical and very acurate with selecting, raising, and training the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
Book Description
What style is it? How is it put together? Is it real or is it a fake? How can I make it look its best without destroying its value? A savvy authority answers these and many other questions about when, where, how, and even why a piece of furniture was made. And by juxtaposing genuine works with copies, he shows how to judge the quality and authenticity of antiques to distinguish a fake from the real thing.
Covering three centuries of changing styles, this handsome and useful volume details each period's essential traits, offering practical guidance to novice and seasoned collectors alike. The book moves sequentially through major design periods, including the popular William and Mary and Queen Anne styles, Rococo and Chippendale, Federal, Shaker, Modern, and Revival. Illustrations of silverwork and paintings set the furniture in context, and comparisons with European pieces point out the unique aspects of American design.
JOHN T. KIRK, Emeritus Professor of Art History, Boston University, and for many years a principal lecturer for the American Arts Course at Sotheby's, New York, has held museum curatorial positions at Yale University, Rhode Island School of Design, and the Rhode Island Historical Society. His various awards and grants include a Guggenheim Fellowship, which led to his book The Shaker World: Art, Life, Belief. He lives in Seattle.
251 illustrations, 57 in full color, 7 line drawings, 81/2 x 111/2"

comment on content.......2002-04-25
I do not have the knowledge of 17th/18th century museum quality furniture to properly rate this book. I just want to comment on the very misleading assurtion that this book covers furniture styles up to the present - unless you consider one 1961 furniture company ad and a photo of a Stickley bookcase as proper coverage of 20th century american furniture.

Customer Reviews:
Groovy.......2007-06-01
This book is great for people who know absolutely nothing about gardening, but want to grow a window flower box garden or want to start a backyard herb and vegetable garden. Takes you through the details of gardening in an informative and easy-going way and answers all your questions.
The perfect book.......2007-05-31
I'm always looking for the perfects books and this is certainly one of them. It's chock full of ideas, tips and tricks and lots of fun projects.
I'm new to gardening and I had a lot of questions on my mind and I found every possible answers in this book. How to prepare soil, how to prune, what about fertilizing, compost, and lots more.
The design of the book is great, I just love it !
My only complaint is that the temperature used in the book are only in F even if the author is Canadian. I would've appreciated having both F and C degrees.
Great read; terrific reference.......2007-03-29
This book included even more than I expected. It's fun to read and has tons of info that will guide me through my garden all year long. Fun projects, plant and pest info, and suggestions and resources. My 9-year-old son even found a project! Fabulous photos, too.
Great book for beginner gardeners.......2007-03-28
This book is a great resource for all gardeners, particularly ones just starting out.
This is the gardening book I would have written!.......2007-01-30
So many gardening books out there -- and this one is just the one I was going to write, but I didn't have to! It's not written like a text book, and has lots of photos so you can see what things are supposed to look like and what they're not supposed to look like. There are also several DIY projects that are just fun! (A gardening apron, a fence made from sticks, a muslin tea bag, and several more.) I bought this book and lost it in a long-distance move, so I bought it again! It's an easy-to-use handbook, and makes gardening less intimidating than my college textbooks (for my landscape horticulture courses) made it seem!

Book Description
The Dorylaimida represent a large and very important group of soil and freshwater inhabiting nematodes of great agricultural importance. Both in appearance and mode of life they represent a wide diversity and as a consequence the number of species and higher taxa that have been described hitherto is the highest within Nematoda. The identification of species, genera, families, etc. of Dorylaimida is very difficult and at times causes problems for the specialist too. The large number of species on the one hand and often the meagre descriptions on the other make even well-known taxonomists to look at Dorylaimida with great hesitation and desperation. M. Shamim Jairajpuri and Wasim Ahmad have undertaken a great task in summarizing, evaluating and systematizing all the knowledge that has been published so far.
