Book Description
Revolutionary natural-childbirth book by world-renowned authority promotes comfort and safety.
Customer Reviews:
Not a "must have".......2007-06-18
I am planning a natural childbirth and I found this one the least helpful. It is great for promotting squatting during bith and has good pictures that illustrate why squatting is the best position.
However, beyond that I found that both the Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way: Revised Edition and The Birth Partner, Second Edition were much better for preparing my husband and I for the delivery.
A MUST READ FOR EVERY PREGNANT WOMEN.......2007-05-25
When I found out that I was pregnant, I was excited, but scarred. My neighbor, who is an Internalist, gave me this book. Reading it took away a lot of my fears and actually made me excited about giving birth.
I have always has reservations about hospitals so I ended up giving birth in a birthing center and was aided by a midwife, midwife student, a doula and my husband. Whith the laid back atmosphere, I was able to implement a lot from this book including the deep breathing to the walking and using the tub and shower to releive pain. And for me the birth ball was wonderful. I would sit on it, leaning on a pillow that was on the bed while my midwife stood on one side of me and my husband on the other, and when I had a contraction they would push on my hips. This helped with the pain and helped the pelvis open.
I was hoping to give birth to my baby boy while squatting, but he came so fast that I wasn't fully dialated, so I had to use the side-lying position while the midwife maneuvered my cervix over his head. Over all my birth experiance was great and I owe a lot of it to the information that I received from reading this book.
Great Content, pictures need to be updated.......2007-05-15
The content of the book is excellent and a good supplement to what a medical doctor would tell you. It is a must read for those who really want to have a natural birth, just try to ignore the outdated hair and clothing styles. Good Luck.
Hands Down this is the book you want!.......2006-12-27
I am a long time labor doula, childbirth educator, etc...and this is the singular book I recommend for moms to read if they want to know how to use their bodies to birth their babies or what to expect from Labor (and what expectant mama doesn't!).
Even if you plan on pain meds read this book. You will experience labor, and the more of it that you work through before asking for meds, the healthier the outcome for you and baby. Labor pain is a message from your body telling you to move, and this book explains the physiology of birth so that you will understand the messages your baby is sending you as she moves through a variety of positions during the birthing process.
Enjoy!
very enlightening.......2005-09-03
The birthing process is fully explained with attention to the female anatomy and how it changes due to pregnancy. The pictures and descriptions are very convincing. I like that it shows that active birth can be done at home, at a birthing center, or in a hospital. Also, there are some indespensible pictures of pre-natal yoga excersizes that you can do alone or with a partner. I combed through this book again and again since I got it, and I know I'll be referring back to it for at least the next nine months! Well worth the purchase, however I ultimately decide to have our birth experience.

Book Description
Anyone with diabetes knows how important it is to eat well, but healthful food need not be dull, nor does reducing fat and calories have to mean giving up flavor. Why feel deprived when you could start the day with blueberry pancakes with blueberry maple syrup? Company coming? Everyone will enjoy a savory chutney cheese spread or queso fundito followed by pork tenderloin with gremolata. For an easy weeknight dinner, try lasagna casserole or pizza with carmelized onions and smoked turkey. Want to indulge a sweet tooth? Lemon cloud pie or white chocolate cheesecake will satisfy. The recipes in this massive book draw on the latest diabetes recommendations and make the best use of the new lower-fat ingredients available today. Each recipe is accompanied by a nutritional analysis and the most current diabetes exchange information, and the book includes timely information on exercise, carbohydrate counting, and food-exchange lists.
Customer Reviews:
Proceed with caution.......2007-04-19
Many of the recipes in this cookbook have in excess of 50-60 carbs per serving. Many times a serving is way less then what actually we put on our plates. As a diabetic I could not recommend this book to someone new to diabetes control. A+ for the quanity and quality of the recipes but NOT for a diabetic.
Big collection of decent recipes with some caveats.......2005-01-23
On the plus side, there are 1001 recipes, so you have to be able to find some you will enjoy and the directions are easy to follow. Most of the recipes keep an eye on carbs, sugars and fat, but make sure you pay attention to the sodium and cholesterol content or your meal might get out of hand. I would like to have seen them include fiber and maybe even a breakdown of the carbs and fats in the nutritional info like some other cookbooks are doing. I ran into a couple of recipes that had minor errors in them, such as a listed ingredient not being used in the steps or vice-versa. The most troubling thing I found is that some of the nutritional information doesn't seem to add up. The "Chicken-Vegetable Manicotti with Creamed Spinach Sauce" lists 435 grams of carbs for a 2 manicotti serving. I guess errors are bound to happen when you have 1000 recipes, and I expect they will be fixed for future editions, but make sure you take a good look at the nutritional info and exchanges to see if it makes sense. All in all though, it makes a decent choice for your cookbook collection.
Great-tasting food for non-diabetics too........2004-04-06
I'm not diabetic, but as I looked through the appetizers section of this cookbook, I just had to try it. The recipes sounded that yummy. I bought the book and recommend it highly to anyone who wants to cook tasty food without resorting to lots of fat and sugar to do it.
I am on Weight Watchers, and the recipes are points-friendly without being tasteless, and "tasteless" is how I would describe every WW recipe and every "healthy" frozen dinner I have tried--sorry to say. By contrast, the food from this cookbook is great. I made the monkfish-cheddar chowder from the book last week and that recipe will be a longterm keeper. [By the way, it works with talapia or another firm white fish if you don't want to spend $$ on monkfish or can't find it at your local, land-locked grocery. :-)]
One of the best things about the book is that it teaches without being at all preachy. For instance, the chowder recipe called for pureeing some of the vegetables and broth before adding the fish. I first thought, "That's a pain in the neck," to this apparently unnecessary step, but I did it, and realized that the soup is much thicker and creamier--without cream--because a portion of the veggies were pureed. I learned something AND I got a great soup out of the deal.
All recipes list calories, sodium, fat, protein, carbs and the like, as well as "exchanges" for those to whom that language is useful. No fiber grams are listed, which makes the recipes a little harder to estimate WW points for than they would be otherwise. Perhaps in a future edition, the authors can list fiber grams. In the meantime, I'm very much enjoying the book and the food I can make with it.
1,001 DELICOUS RECIPES FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES.......2002-11-30
I'M A RECENT DIABETIC. I HAVE LOOKED OVER COOKBOOK AFTER COOKBOOK. NONE ADAPTED TO MY TASTE OR LIFE STYLE. THIS ONE IS TOTALLY GREAT. I MADE THE WALDORF SALAD FOR THANKGIVING. MY FAMILY'S WAS CRAZY ABOUT IT. THE HUNGARIAN GOULASH WAS GREAT ALSO. I HAVE BOUGHT, BUT I HAVEN'T TRIED THE 1,001 DESSERTS BOOK YET. IF IT IS AS GOOD AS THE RECIPE BOOK, I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING THE DESSERTS ALSO. IF YOU ARE DIEBETIC, YOU HAVE TO TRY THESE BOOKS. I CAN'T RECOMMEND THEM ENOUGH.
A Great Book!.......2002-10-27
I found this book to be incredibly helpful! Not only are there a variety of recipes, but this book also contains comprehensive nutritional information and general cooking tips for beginners.
I've been cooking for more than thirty years, and this book stands on my shelf with very few other cookbooks as one I will actually use.
I know we're not supposed to talk about the price of the book, but here goes: for my money, you won't find a better value. There really are a thousand and one recipes, but the other information truly puts this book over the top. Buy, try it. You won't regret it.

Too many carbs!.......2002-12-28
I cannot understand how anyone with diabetes or a carbohydrate intolerance of any kind could eat any of these items. They are so high in carbohydrates. I follow a low-carbohydrate regimen for health reasons (not vanity), and I could safely eat none of the recipes found in this tome. I returned the book

Annalee price guide usefulness.......2006-02-01
The colored pictures in this guide are beautiful and extremely helpful in identifying some Annalee dolls, however, with many of the dolls having similar names, and the dates on the tags not being when they were actually introduced, there are many dolls that you are not able to identify correctly. The original price guide, written by the Thorndike family, was very helpful because it gave very explicit descriptions of the dolls, making it very easy to identify specific characteristics of dolls with similar names. This guide stops early in 2001. A newer, more user friendly book needs to be published, but until then, this one will help somewhat with doll identification.

Book Description
This book contains a multidisciplinary collection of studies on women in miracle stories found in texts ranging from religious classics to contemporary literary fiction. Miracle stories are a genre of great importance for the study of women's religious inheritance and for the historical and cultural understanding of women as 'makers of faith'. Miracle stories are very generally speaking more open to popular religion and culture than, for instance, doctrinal and official ecclesiastical texts, and as such, they can be of special interest to the study of women's lives and religious aspirations. Remarkably, up till now this genre has not been looked at from this point of view. This book aims to open this field for further research by presenting case studies from diverse angles and disciplines.
Some of the questions this book tries to answer are: What do miracle stories specifically tell us about women? Are there some (types of) miracles that are in particular related to (certain groups of) women? What do these stories tell us about women as performers and/or subjects of miracles? What can be said about the social function and religious meaning of miracles by specifically looking at the way certain groups of women are practising and experiencing miracles? By including research on miracle stories in contemporary fiction written by women this book also wants to acknowledge and research the disputed status of 'miracles' as well of 'women' in our present society which is moving from modernity to post-modernity.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent advice and a fine collection of fonts.......2002-01-03
I'm only giving this excellent book a four star rating as it was published in 1995, so some of the information about using software to manage fonts and compose text is out of date, and although there is a chapter on e-mail, there's nothing on the WWW. However, this is only a small fraction of the body of this very valuable book. In addition to being an outstanding and clearly explained guide to typography, the companion CD contains a very superior and diversified collection of finely executed fonts. I've been using them professionally and personally since I first acquired a copy when the book was published.
Both the book and the fonts are well worth the investment. I hope this fine volume will be updated.
Mediorcre book with inflated reviews........1999-11-18
I hate when there are nothing but overly-ecstatic reviews for a particular book. You should be skeptical too. The first few chapters of this book are a good reference for designers who have little experience working with type on computers. There is also a chapter on "The Rules of Digital Typography" that offers a great deal of help for the novice, but will nauseate the experienced. It contains a chapter on creating juvenile Photoshop treatments such as "Type in flames." 100 out of the 271 pages of this book are spec sheets for the imitation fonts included with the CD. The overall design of the book is substandard for a design book. Overall, the book is a good resource for those who lack fundamental graphic design education (which includes typography), but of little use to the experienced designer.
Should be called the digital type bible.......1999-09-07
This is the best treatment of digital typography I've ever seen. Sean has not only addressed both technical and aesthetic issues, he has done it in a refreshing and witty tone that had me laughing out loud. Unlike many computer graphic design books on the market today, this one is NOT written for Mac users only; PC users will find this book immensely helpful in dealing with cross-platform problems that crop up when dealing with service bureaus. I consider this my most valuable reference book. With its wealth of technical info, beautiful typography, and solid design technique--not to mention the CD-ROM full of fonts!--it's a steal. I'd urge everyone from design pros to administrative assistants to buy this one.
This is a high quality book on typography and a great value!.......1999-05-05
As a college professor who has taught typography for the past 12 years, I have been waiting for a book & CD like this. The type history, technique tutorials, font handling tips and specimens are good overviews for my students and the font library is great. These fonts are good quality, and better yet, the CD contains both IBM & Mac in two formats for cross platform work. This is a good complete font library for beginners who are stuck using that long list of bad novelty display fonts which loaded with a word processing program. Also, any outdated info in the technical section (re: versions of software) is updated on the author's website.
A stunningly beautiful book about fonts........1999-01-25
This book contains all sorts of great information about fonts. As a bonus, the book design is gorgeous and the book comes with some wonderful fonts on CD-ROM. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in design and typography, especially those who strive to put a slightly higher level of quality and detail into their work.

Book Description
The status and prospects of African-Americans in contemporary society are of immense significance. They speak both to the conscience of the society and to ominous social and political portends. Involving issues of essential fairness and social justice are the practical problems of widespread poverty, unemployment, and the pervasive lack of opportunity stemming from stinted education. The stage is set for a national program of basic institutional reforms addressing the root causes of the African-American community's often analyzed but uncorrected economic, political, and social problems. The authors make a convincing argument that the emphases for solutions to the widespread social conditions gripping the African-American population need to be on the social processes that so victimize this segment of the nation's citizenry. They see societal institutions as capable of furthering or retarding progress not only in the economic order but also in its interactions with the political and criminal justice systems. Income disparities, lack of access to higher education, political exclusion, and unequal treatment in criminal justice administration are all seen as contributing to the characteristic institutional neglect or flawed program application. The authors make a compelling case for reform not only in the interest of social justice but for the assurance of a more productive and cohesive society.
