Book Description
The eight short stories in Judge Dee at Work cover a decade during which the judge served in four different provinces of the T’ang Empire. From the suspected treason of a general in the Chinese army to the murder of a lonely poet in his garden pavilion, the cases here are among the most memorable in the Judge Dee series.

Judge Dee Short Stories.......2005-01-21
Dutch diplomat Robert van Gulik wrote the Judge Dee mysteries (in English!) to introduce the West to the Chinese version of the mystery story, which arose centuries before the English detective story. Judge Dee is an actual historical person, a magistrate of the seventh century during the T'ang dynasty, who was renown in China for his ability to solve crimes. In Judge Dee at Work, van Gulik presents us with eight short stories each of a single case (the novels, in the Chinese tradition, involve 3 intertwined cases) that take place throughout the judge's long career (magistrates were usually moved to a new post every three years). A table at the back of the book, places each case and all the novels within the timeline of Judge Dee's life.
I have read about half the novels and this book of short stories, and I have enjoyed them all. Early on, Judge Dee employs three different men to be his lieutenants, and they do much of the legwork for him. However, Dee is also very hands-on, going to the crime scenes and sometimes even going about in disguise. In some of the short stories here, he solves the mystery on his own. van Gulik has created a good detective in Dee; he is very, very smart, fair, compassionate to victims and stern with criminals. The cases are varied and interesting, and difficult to solve. I especially like the setting of ancient China. van Gulik really seems to know the era he is writing about, and he brings it alive through the actions and dialog of the story. There is no exposition here. If we need to know the differences of Taoism to Buddhism, we find out through a conversation of Dee with a monk or other character. That really makes the stories glide along. Sometimes a choice of phrase seems a little odd or modern for the setting, and I assume that arises from the fact that van Gulik was Dutch writing about China in English. In any event, these quirks become rather fun and don't detract at all from the stories. van Gulik also made illustrations in the traditional Chinese style of the time, and they add to the stories. I am very glad I have found the Judge Dee mysteries, and Judge Dee at Work is an excellent way to meet the judge and his world. You will be glad you did.
Wonderful Chinese detective stories - 7th Century style!.......2000-07-19
I first became aware of the Judge Dee stories after reading the short story "He Came with the Rain" in a historical mystery collection. I loved the story so much that I promptly went to Amazon.com to find more Judge Dee novels and stories. This collection of eight short stories is particularly interesting as it covers about 20 years in Judge Dee's career through several of his postings. The stories are extremely interesting, both for the wealth of historical detail as well as the actual mystery content. Judge Dee as a District Magistrate is the leading civilian authority but I found stories such as "The Red Tape Murder" particularly interesting when he clashes with military authorities. This gives Dr. Van Gulik the opportunity to introduce snippets about ancient Chinese history, particularly about the clashes with Korea and the Tartar offenses on China's Western borders. This is a period of Chinese history where very little is known - almost a sort of Chinese Dark Ages - so it is wonderful to learn more about that time, also about the social customs of the era, which I found surprisingly modern, with the exception of the accepted practice of polygamy! If you are interested in historical mystery fiction, I would highly recommend the series. Also try the Sister Fidelma series about a mystery solving nun in Dark Ages Ireland - it is equally atmospheric!
Sketches of the Judicial Life: China,Seventh Century.......2000-06-13
The wonderful thing about these stories is the sense of time and place which comes through in all of them. We find ourselves easily transported to seventh century China, and the world of a highly organised empire, with its representative in the various cities which serve as venues for the stories, the Magistrate, in the person of Judge Dee.
Robert Van Gulick's picture of Chinese life, crafted from his own extensive study of China, both underpins and overlays these elegant detective stories. Those inhabiting these stories are truly the inhabitants of the places: walking through the streets, eating at the restaurants, working in the Tribunal, and interacting with all classes of their highly stratified society.
The characters are well developed, from Judge Dee himself to his various colourful assistants and lieutenants, who do most (but not all) of the Tribunal's leg work. Criminals, victims, witnesses, and others along the way complete the fascinating tableaux.
There are references to the various Judge Dee novels at the beginning of each story providing a context within the magistrate's career. Numerous line drawings by the author gently illuminate the stories.

Review by BIG D.......2007-04-23
Darren Shan is a half-vampire. His friends, Mr.Crepsley, Vancha March, Debbie Hemlock, and the police chief inspector, Alice Burgess,(and sort of Steve Leanard) are all helping Darren find the Vampaneze Lord. Something tragic and very unneeded happens to Mr. Crepsley and they find out who the real Vampaneze Lord is. Over all I think Cirque du Freak: Killers of the Dawn was the most exiting, gory, and sad book of Cirque du Freak yet.
Shan, you..........2007-03-26
A LOT happened in this li'l bookadoodle. Darren went to...JAIL! Along with Mr. Crepsley, Harkat, Vancha, and Steve. But that's only a few hours of this dark book. A great battle against the Vampaneze awaits. I liked this book, it was written well, and at one chapter, I actually believed it! (You'll see...) But there was one thing I didn't like...
***WARNING!!!! MAJOR, MASSIVE SPOILER AHEAD!!!! DO NOT, I REPEAT, !DO!!NOT! READ THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE ALREADY READ THE BOOK. IF YOU DO READ THIS, YOU WILL HATE YOURSELF FOR A LONG TIME!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!!***
I didn't like how he killed of ister-may epsley-cray. I liked him, and without him, the Darren we know would not exist. He was a good, important character. I also thought he was a cool vampire, who laughed, was angry, loved someone, and held Darren up, unlike all the other vampires, such as Seba Nile, Gavner Purl, and even Vancha March who all seemed to act and talk the same to me. He really cared about Darren. Fortunately, Darren seems to be strong enought to go on without him. Still, it kinda sucks that he died there.
***OKAY, END OF MAJOR, MASSIVE SPOILER. IF YOU READ THIS BEFORE THE BOOK, WHOOPSIE!!!! TOLD YA NOT TO DO THAT, NAUGHTY PEOPLE. *wags finger* BACK TO THE REVIEW!!!!!!!***
That aside, it was good. I look foreward to the next book, and based on the exerpt I read (it was in the back of this book) we may find out a bit more about Harkat, which is cool, 'cause I like him. I hope things look up...
death sucks.......2007-02-20
I like it a bit because it was violent and dramatic for example, in the scene where Mr. Crepsley died trying to save the entire vampire race. He died because there was a threat to the vampire race called, The Vampaneze Lord. This guy was going to lead the vampaneze in a war against the vampires. The difference between them is that the vampires drink as munch as they need and they hardly drink on humans, vampaneze are the ones that we think about from the movies and so on, they drink all of an animals blood because they think their superior.
I think if he put less drama added more plot and violence, it might have been better. I liked the scene where the random vampaneze attacked Darren Shan because it was very bloody and it reunited Darren w/ his best freind since elementary, Steve. If it had more scenes like that it might have been way better.
I gave it this much because he was reunited w/ his old girlfriend and his old best friend (pissed at him for being a ½ vampire this guy is the vampaneze lord). It didn't have as much violence as the others did like in the first one, he jacked Mr. Crepsley's spider and got bit. I liked some of the drama for example, when he made out w/ his old girlfriend (who is like 25 now and his only 19 or 15 and she's a high school teacher). I recommend you guys to read it and everything before and after this! =]
The War Begins.......2007-02-17
This story is about Darren Shan a Half vampire Larten Crepsley, and Vancha March. Crepsley and March are full vampires who are on the hunt for the lord of the vampaneze. When all else fails one of them has to lose his life so they can kill the lord of the vampanese. The only thing is that the one they kill isn't the real lord of the vampenese.
The author captured my interest by beginning the story with a battle with the police. Children under the age of 13 should not read this book because of all the blood and violence.
Wait.... that was really unfair...........2006-10-13
This series was great. I've followed all the books up until now. The setting is totally unique, and the characters are likeable. When this book started, there were three characters that really made me enjoy the books. Darren, Vancha, and Mr. Crepsley. Vancha's awesome just because he's so cool. Mr. Crepsley is great because he's the one who made Darren, and he's really loyal to Darren. His sense of humor is gruesome but awesome, and he's kind of the backbone of the story. He helps Darren through stuff that seem impossible. When he dies, though, the book kind of loses its atmosphere of lightheartedness. It was a serious book series to start, just because of the subject matter, but by killing off a character who I felt was one of the main driving forces of the story, Darren Shan's stories feel like they have lost momentum. The book series becomes too melancholy and sad.
Also, there was absolutely no reason for Mr. Crepsley to die. I know that in the book, it actually says that they didn't kill the vampaneze lord, which is another reason why his death was pointless, but it seemed like Mr. Crepsley's death was forced. I think the writer, Darren Shan, felt like he needed to make a character death , which is really unfair to the reader, especially if there is no reason at all. There WAS no reason for him to die his "honorific" death, which was sudden and uncalled for. I really miss Mr. Crepsley, and although I'll still keep reading the series after this book, I am only going to do it to find out what happens. The only way, in my mind, that Darren Shan can redeem himself, is by bringing Mr. Crepsley back from the dead. There just aren't enough satisfying things left in the book series to make them good anymore.
Customer Reviews:
the 9th book.......2005-11-23
This is the 9th book in the series of Cirque Du Freak by Darren Shan. This is about the search for the Lord of Vampaneze and Darren, Larten, Vincha, and Harket are on a search to find and kill the Lord of Vampaneze before that person becomes full Vampinese and grows stronger to wipe out the entire vampire. In the book Darren is told who the Lord of Vampaneze is, and after they think they killed him. Also, this book becomes the death of one of Darren's closest friend. Darren is also again reunited with his first love, Debbie. The vampires also get a helping hand from some one of the law.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has started to read the series, Cirque Du Freak or has read any other Darren Shan books before or like to read vampire books with lots of suspense.
About this book I liked how the book keeps you on the edge of your seat trying to guess what's going to happen next. The biggest shock in the book happens in the end of the book when the Lord of Vampaneze is revealed. I hate how one of Darren's friends die because it may be harder for Darren to make decisions on his own.

I love this book.. very good for your sorting out who or what you do not
need in your life.
Great Read for the Busy Person.......2006-09-21
This book is a great read for the busy person. Jon Gordon's tips are easy to implement and do help you get the energy you need to blast through your day.
Even though I work with a large number of people, there are many similarities between them. The majority want to feel better and get more energy. Those are number one and number two on the list. Gordon's book supplies anyone with these two needs the answers that work!
When I first picked up the book, I must admit, I thought there couldn't be anything in there that I didn't know myself. After a read or two I was wrong and I started implementing some of the principles for awesome results. (Have you seen me speak live?! If you have, you know what I'm talking about!)
I'm not going to spoil it for Jon here, but Tip # 39 is worth the entire price of the book and more! I let all my clients know about it and it helps them reach optimal health regardless of how busy they are.
Get it and get energized!

The best thing about this book is the format. It is easy to read, digest and take action on! Jon includes action steps for many items so you can incorporate these changes easily into your life and reap the energy benefits. He has combined information from various sources into an easy to read and use guide to increasing your energy. Excellent book!
Better then Ever.......2005-09-25
After hearing Jon speak at a conference and experiencing a session, I was hooked and wanted more. I feel better then I have in a long time, in fact better then ever. My ability to focus has increased. Tasks are being completed in a shorter amount of time. I'm sleeping through the night. All in all, my life is now better then ever!

Very Good Culinary History of Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan.......2007-05-20
`Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen' by Sonia Uvezian, a native of Beirut, Lebanon, and a leading culinary journalist on Middle Eastern cuisines, is both a personal and scholarly account of food history and modern practice from the Arab (and other) traditions of Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria.
The very best thing about the book is the mix of scholarly history, personal observations, and culinary content. While the scholarly aspect is firmly grounded in copious footnotes and a five page bibliography, mostly of 19th and early 20th century travelogues and histories, it is neatly tucked away, below the level of our stream of consciousness read of the excellent prose. The personal observations have all the richness of an upper class native, whose family could afford a country house up in the mountains east of Beirut, and also afford all of the best ingredients, and were familiar with the full range of the cuisine of the Levant.
All this makes the book very different from the long-standing authority on cooking of the Levant, Paula Wolfert's celebrated `The Cooking of the Eastern Mediterranean'. Not only is the approach different, but Ms. Uvezian does not even cite Ms. Wolfert, even though Wolfert's well-known book was published five years before Ms. Uvezian's volume. Ms. Uvezian also does not cite the other great writer on eastern Mediterranean cooking, Claudia Roden, with her `The New Book of Middle Eastern Food'. I point this out not as a criticism, but as an indication that Ms. Uvezian has much of her own thing to say and does not need references to other modern culinary writers. I compared Ms. Uvezian's recipes with those from Mme. Wolfert, and was surprised to find little overlap there, even in the very well defined realm of breads. All this adds up to the conclusion that if you have an interest in Arab cooking of the Levant, you would do well to get both books (although if your interest is strictly culinary, Ms. Wolfert has a slight edge, as she is the better writer, and has an extremely good eye for describing recipes, even if they were not learned at her mother's knee.)
Ms. Uvezian gives us a lucid description of the history the culinary history and landscape of Arab, Turkish, Druse, Persian, and French influences on the cooking of the Levant. It should be no surprise that in spite of the presence of Israel smack dab in the middle of this region, ancient Hebrew and modern Jewish food traditions are not covered, although there are shelves of other books dedicated to this subject.
This cuisine is part of the greater Mediterranean world of food, with some very important differences from the western (European) Mediterranean of Spain, France, and Italy. First, there is no charcuterie to speak of, since there is the prohibition against eating pork. Thus, there is also no cooking with lard; however, the rich sources of olive oil and nut oils make this absence virtually unnoticed. And, butter is more important than in pig-rich Spain and southern Italy. Next, there is no cooking with wine, due to the Muslim prohibition against alcoholic beverages. And, cheese (especially hard aged cheese) is largely replaced by yoghurt (The primary hard cheeses mentioned are kashkawan, imported from Turkey or Rumania and the famous Italian Parmesan). On the positive side, there is far more cooking with sugar and other sweet products such as dried fruit. While the Italians give little thought to sweet desserts, the Arabs of the Levant love sweet desserts and pastries. They also make much heavier use of spice mixtures, based on their being closer to the source, and somewhat under the influence of the great Indian tradition of spice mixtures. Where the great French cuisine can muster but two named spice mixtures, the Levant has a dozen or more.
While the book is subtitled `A culinary journey through Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan', the direction of the text is oriented more toward a historical rather than a geographical perspective, with each chapter giving an historical overview of how various food lines evolved.
One of the great surprises, given the absence of a tradition of bars, taverns, or other alcoholic dispensers, is the tradition of Mazza, virtually identical in social and culinary function as the tapas of Spain, the merende of Italy, and the mezze of Greece and Turkey. The typical mazza spread looks remarkably like all those other traditions, with ample portions of olives, spiced nuts, fresh fruits and bread-based bites, but without the salamis and hams and wide variety of cheeses. In the place of cheese there is the rich variety of seed and eggplant-based dips plus yoghurt preparations.
Like the very best studies of Italian, Spanish, and French regional cooking, the book includes chapters on virtually every corner of the culinary landscape, including chapters on Appetizers; Salads; Soups; Dairy Products and Dishes; Egg Dishes; Fish and Shellfish; Poultry and Game Birds; Meat; Kibbeh; Stuffed Vegetables and Fruits; Grains and Pasta; Vegetables and Fruits; Sauces Marinades, Garnishes, and Stuffings; Pickles and Preserves; Breads and Savory Pastries; Desserts; and Beverages.
The book includes a list of middle-Eastern food markets from practically every state; however, these are only in major cities, and there are no Internet sources. If your family is from this region, this book is satisfying oasis of great culinary history, lore, and recipes. For all others, it's a great supplement to Ms. Wolfert's famous volume.
A True Reader Experience.......2003-02-19
I recently purchased this cookbook and at first I thought that this was absolutely the best Middle Eastern book I could possibly get my hands on. However, after a few weeks use, I discovered that this book is very biased and does not reflect the true culinary journey through the Middle East. Furthermore, none of the receipes faired well with my favorite Courvoisier.
The one eastern Mediterranean cookbook I wouldn't be without.......2002-12-16
I was thoroughly disgusted to read the baseless criticisms of this superb cookbook. It is precisely to obtain an accurate account of the cookery of this region along with first-rate recipes that one needs to own "Recipes and Remembrances." Although Claudia Roden's "A New Book of Middle Eastern Food" is better than Paula Wolfert's "The Cooking of the Eastern Mediterranean," when it comes to recipes and text neither can approach "Recipes and Remembrances" in quality. I have cooked extensively from many Middle Eastern cookbooks, including these three, and I can honestly say that Uvezian's book upholds the highest standards of eastern Mediterranean/Middle Eastern cooking and is in a class by itself.
Fascinating History Book.......2002-10-09
While I haven't cooked a tremedous amount of food out of this book yet, it is probably the first cookbook that I have read more than once. It is some wonderful information on the people, history and food of the Levant. It goes through how the different groups in the Middle East serve and prepare food. Talks about the influence of foreign powers on the food and culture. I really enjoyed this book. It's only flaw if that it is long and difficult to wade through if you just in the mood to cook a simple Middle Eastern dish. One of the strengths is the spice mixes. I keep the prepared spice mixes in my cupbard within easy reach and use them a lot.
Deserves a permanent place on your cookbook shelf.......2002-06-14
A gastronomic find, especially for those who evaluate the quality of their lives in terms of what they eat. Uvezian's dedication to excellence is apparent on every page. Impressively authentic recipes and outstanding culinary background information make this richly illustrated volume enormously useful to both professional chefs and home cooks.
Another great cookbook by this author is "The Cuisine of Armenia."

The Official Book of Boston terriers.......2001-10-24
This is an excellant book for both the novice and experienced Boston Terrier fancier. The book defines the history and foundation stock of the breed with enough depth that a good understanding of the breeds development can be gained. Wonderful old photos of both Boston Terriers of days gone bye and their owners. In the contemporary section of the book we see a good cross section of the breed from both the US and around the world. Pedigrees, breed standards and grooming are all covered very well. The photo and text quality is supperb. Highly recommened to all lovers of BT's
Not what I needed........2001-07-06
Although this book has wonderful detailed history on the breed and many, many good colour photographs, it lacked detail in the care of and specific health problems of Boston Terriers. Health was covered in only 4 pages of 176 and these pages had photos on half of each page. I wanted a book as an ongoing reference as my puppy grows, what to feed him, when and how to train him myself; a book that I would continue to use beyond knowing the history of the breed.
AN EXCELLENT GUIDE TO THE BOSTON BULL.......2001-01-08
This excellent book is a comprehensive guide to the care and history of the Boston bull. The pictures are a delightful addition, showing the Boston in its natural glory.
I liked the part covering the history of this intelligent, hardy, high energy little dog. Champion Bostons are covered; their descendants are featured as well.
Special note has been made regarding the care of pregnant Bostons. More often than not, Bostons are delivered by C-section because their heads are too large for a natural delivery. Gentle suggestions are made to breeders and people who are interested in showing their Bostons.
This book is for everybody, from the serious breeder to the pet owner. It will delight anyone who has ever owned a Boston, owns one, will own one or who loves Bostons in general. Bostons are delightful little dogs.
A Wealth of Information!.......2000-07-04
Muriel P. Lee gives an excellent detailed history of the breed, from its beginnings in the late 19th century to the 1990's. This book contains hundreds of photographs of champion Bostons throughout the history. Additionally, the breed standards are described with some detail, as well as illustrations. The chapters on characteristics, showing, breeding and health deal specifically with Bostons. Information is provided on the Boston Terrier Club of America as well as regional breed clubs. It is an excellent reference for people who are looking for their first Boston as well as the experienced fancier!

Here is a fascinating study of commercial glass production along the Ohio River Valley in the 1950s and 1960s. Companies such as Blenko, Pilgram, Rainbow, Viking, Kanawaha, Bischiff, Morgantown and others made free-and mold-blown production glass in modern, sometimes bizarre shapes and wildly vibrant colors. The book is filled with over 400 color photographs of the beautiful glass, its labels, catalog pages, company histories and a price guide.

Useful resource for Fifties Glass.......2002-12-21
Subtitled "Color Along the River," this book features handcrafted glassware produced in the 1950's and 1960's along the Ohio River Valley, an area in West Virginia famed for its glassmaking. The book contains over 400 color photos of glassware, plus labels, catalog page reprints, company histories, and a price guide. Featured companies include Blenko, Pilgrim, Kanawha, Rainbow, A.F. Bischoff, Fostoria, Viking, and Morgantown. There is also a chapter on cased and satin glass from international sources, such as Italy and Scandinavia.
This book is a wonderful source of information on glassware that was poorly documented elsewhere in 1995: crackle glass, all those colorful decanters with pointy teardrop stoppers, cased glass, pinched vases, and oversized bud vases. (Many of these items were not marked, but carried paper labels which quickly wore off.) There is also a chapter on figural glass, featuring the fish, birds, and elephants that were so popular during these decades.
Much of this type of glass is definitely an aquired taste. People seem to love it or hate it: currently it doesn't seem to have the mass following of, say, Depression glass or Fenton. Colors range from the garish (orange) to the gloomy (brown, gray), and items range from the delicate to the downright clunky. Some of the styles are just too recent for people to get too excited about. Having said that, Blenko in particular is seeing quite an upswing in popularity: some of its large decanters--especially amberina--are currently selling for well over $100. And crackle glass has a lot of afficionados. There is no doubt that glass of the 1950's and 1960's will be highly collectible in the near future. This is a unique book, which highlights "a pronounced awareness of color, form, and texture" which took place during these decades.
Didn't live up to my expectations.......2000-12-14
I collect Blenko glass, and I got this book with the expectation that it would help me distinguish Blenko from the other WV glassmakers. The book is full of wonderful photographs, but there is only so much to be learned from a two dimensional object. There is a brief history of each glassmaker, and therein lies the problem. The history is much too brief, and there is very little if any discussion of what distinguishes each glassmaker from its competitors. The pictures are great, but the book left me wanting more information, and I came away from it unsatisfied.
Excellent referrence for collectors of viking glassware.......1999-03-10
I am a collector of viking glassware. This book is the single most helpful book I have found. It has great color photos and, what I find most interesting, actual pages from original viking glassware catalogues. It also has a great section reviewing the different labels from different series. Additionally, it contains a rather descriptive and detailed table of estimated values of the different pieces today. The book does a good job of giving histories of the companies inside as well. There are other types of glassware from the same geographical area (New Martinsville, WV) covered in the book as well. I, however, can not list them for you as my original copy of the book was recently destroyed in a fire so I am online today to order my new copy of the book!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent presentation.......2006-03-22
I have been looking for a garden design book for some time that would be heavy on how to lay out the design professionally on paper. This book goes through the progression of the design process and shows each step in the process. It has been extremely helpful in my designing of a three acre property.
Excellent for even experienced landscape professionals.......2006-02-01
I am using this book as a textbook for a Garden Design class. I have several years of garden design experience and have many more years of gardening experience. This book explains the design process in an easy to understand and inspiring way. I have found that it addresses planting and design in subtley different ways that jog my mind to be more creative. It is well written, well designed and very informative.
Great for Beginners.......2005-08-20
I moved into a new house and needed to do something with the landscaping. It is a mess. I cannot afford to hire a professional, so I bought this book hoping it would help me come up with a plan on my own. I haven't finished the book yet, but am finding it very helpful. It is more like a text book on how to draw up a garden plan, aimed at professionals, but it isn't overly technical and is fairly informative. I would have given it 5 five stars except that I am not very artistic, and I wish the book had more info to help me in that regard.
