4 out of 5 stars The Perfect Title for the Perfect Book.......2006-06-23

The curious reader that selects this unique, well written, detail filled, and often heartfelt collection of nostalgic memories shared by the chosen authors within will enjoy a wonderful surprise page after page. Whether you are a historian, classic Hollywood filmbuff, "Saurian" scientist, or devoted Kong fan, there is inevitably something of interest for everyone. The chapters are actually essays, primarily written by male authors, artists, and scientists, who begin their tales with the memory of seeing the 1933 epic movie for the 1st time, then conveying how it impacted their lives. The title, "Kong Unbound- the Cultural Impact, Pop Mythos, and Scientific Plausibility of a Cinematic Legend," is exactly what each writer tackles essay after essay. In addition, compelling questions about the details of the, "Beauty and the Beast," story are brought up, and solutions are offered, while supplying trivia about Hollywood at the time, the stars of the film, and what was going on in American history during the era that the movie was released. A plethora of knowledge is also shared with regards to other King Kong films and novels that have attempted to rival the epic original.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and was sorry to read the last essay, because it was so interesting from cover to cover. I am a science teacher now, and my history teacher while in college suggected the themes mentioned in the title towards a thesis paper. If only this book were available at the time. I look forward to a volume 2.

2 out of 5 stars Monkey Business.......2006-03-20

Let's forget for a moment what it means for a 48-year-old man to not only purchase a book titled Kong Unbound: The Cultural Impact, Pop Mythos, and Scientific Plausibility of a Cinematic Legend, but to then cavil about its quality. What did I expect, a tome to the cinematic simian on a par with Agee on Film?

With that little mea culpa out of the way, this volume features a dozen and a half essays by some pretty notable figures, most of them in the field of speculative fiction, all of them pontificating on the modern myth that is King Kong. A fine idea -- if only a lot more care had been invested in the execution of the project.

Witness the book itself: printed on cheap paper, rife with typos and formatting errors. Didn't anybody proof this thing before it went to press?

Regarding the content, while a handful of the essays are interesting and entertaining, too many of them traverse the same ground ad nauseam. Material incessantly overlaps and we're presented with the movie's plot way too many times (would anybody who didn't already know the film by heart be reading this book in the first place?). Karen Haber, who is credited as the editor, should have shaped the material, organized it in such a way that there wasn't so much repetition, and presented it in such a fashion that each piece complemented the next.

Some of the information provided is just outright incorrect, such as Harry Harrison's comments on the special effects in Creation, the aborted RKO film that would eventually become King Kong: "They were created by Willis H. O'Brien, assisted by a youthful Ray Harryhausen, who virtually invented stop-motion special effects for film." The problem being that Harryhausen, who indeed would go on to work with O'Brien on Mighty Joe Young in 1949, was only 12 years old at the time of Creation. Didn't anybody fact check this book before it went to press?

While some of the writers, like David Gerrold (who here invokes the fun of his books The Trouble With Tribbles and The World of Star Trek), approach the subject with tongue-in-cheek reverence, too many of the essayists seem to have seized this book as an opportunity to confess for their sin of ever having enjoyed King Kong, what with all its scientific and technical inaccuracies and improbabilities, in the first place. In those instances, the book reads like an interminable treatise on why there isn't a Santa Claus.

Robert Silverberg's essay, "The Magic and Mystery of Kong," shines, speaking to the child in all of us. He successfully draws from art and literature to examine Kong's popularity and longevity.

The "conversation" about King Kong that closes the book, between William Joyce, Michael Chabon, and Maurice Sendak, is fairly pointless. We're not apprised of its context (were they on a conference call, onstage, sitting in a bar?), and what's been provided appears to be nothing more than a transcription, with Chabon mostly contributing "Uh-hum" and "Right." Once again, the editor abrogated her responsibility in helping organize and render this material more meaningful.

Sadly, even Ray Bradbury and his best friend Ray Harryhausen's opening essays are disappointments, amounting to not much more than fan letters to Kong. Too sentimental, they are of little value towards understanding the subject at hand. Much better in this vein is artist Joe DeVito's childhood remembrances in "King Kong: A Kid's Tale."

Speaking of Ms. Haber (who is married to Robert Silverberg), she goes on and on in her introduction about the co-opting of King Kong, yet apparently isn't troubled by the "Kong Official Movie Merchandise" labels plastered on the front and back of her own book.

Perhaps part of the problem is that Ms. Haber only commissioned science fiction and science writers to write about the classic 1933 film. While indeed the prospect of modern-day dinosaurs and a giant ape are indeed the stuff of science fiction, Kong, what with its dark dream imagery, remains as much a horror story. I can't help but wonder what the likes of Stephen King or Clive Barker could have contributed in terms of how the film insinuates itself into our psyche and wraps itself around our deepest fears.

Money would be better spent on the The King Kong Collection, a two-DVD set that includes the newly restored and digitally mastered 1933 original film, commentary tracks, and numerous intelligent and informative documentaries about the making of the film; included, too, are the films Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young. While Son of Kong unfortunately stands as RKO's quick-buck effort to capitalize on King Kong's success, and Mighty Joe Young is arguably nothing more than New Age Kong redux, the original film, the one that started it all, not only speaks for itself -- it roars.

4 out of 5 stars Kong Transcendent.......2005-12-09

KONG UNBOUND (The Cultural Impact, Pop Mythos, And Scientific Plausibility of a Cinematic Legend) is a collection of essays inspired by the original 1933 KING KONG. The book shouldn't be dismissed as another rushed, media tie-in to the Peter Jackson remake; there are some genuine pieces of interest by noteworthy SF writers and illustrators. The best of which are those by Robert Silverberg, William Stout, Philip Currie, and Joe DeVito. The latter's personal recollection is one of the best-- capturing the impact of the film on a small boy in the 1960s. The other contributors add the usual quota of "phallic symbols" and "rape analogies," and other pieces are either silly or downright wrong. Contrary to what Richard Lupoff writes, co-director Ernest Schoedsack was never a member of Merian Cooper's Kosciuszko Squadron. And Paul DiFilippo diminishes the extent of Ruth Rose's contribution to the original's screenplay despite the fact that 90% of the final dialogue was hers! Christopher Priest, meanwhile, reveals an almost snobbish contempt by attacking the "amateurish" acting and linking the "trashy appeal" of the screenplay to pulp fiction. Despite these and other weaker pieces, the greatness of the immortal Kong shines through. The contributions by Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury alone make this a must-read for any fan of Kong.

Book Description

Isle of the Dead
Centuries in the future, Francis Sandow is the only man alive who was born as long ago as the 20th century. His body is kept young and in perfect health by advanced scientific methods; he has amassed such a fortune that he can own entire planets; and he has become a god. No, not a god of Earth, but one of the panetheon of the alien Pei'ans: he is Shimbo of Darktree, Shrugger of Thunders. Yet he doesn't believe that his personality has merged with the ancient consciousness of Shimbo, that he really can call down the skies upon his enemies. The time comes, however, when Francis Sandow must use these powers against the most dangerous antagonist in the universe: another Pei'an god -- Shimbo's own enemy, Belion. And Belion has no doubt whatever of his own powers....

Eye of Cat
A retired hunter of alien zoo specimens, William Blackhorse Singer, the last Najavo on a future Earth, is called upon by the World Government to aid in protecting an alien diplomat from a powerful and hostile member of his own species. Singer, in turn, seeks the aid of a shape-shifting alien known as "Cat" in carrying out the mission. Cat accepts, with one condition: when the mission is over, he wants a return bout with the man who captured him -- a chase with Singer as the hunted instead of the hunter....

3 out of 5 stars Two Mismatched Stories in One Book.......2006-07-20

I feel sort of bad about rating this book at only 3 stars. But, the two stories in this book are just worlds apart in how good they are. The 2nd story (though listed first on the cover) is "Isle of the Dead," which is a really good story in classic Zelazny fashion. The other story, "Eye of Cat," is not that good at all. Now, if the publisher had put "Isle of the Dead" together with its sequel, "To Die in Italbar," I'd have given the compilation a 5 star rating. But, since the actual two stories have nothing in common, I'm forced to just take an average of my two ratings. For ease of reference, here are my write-ups for the individual stories:

Isle of the Dead: This is classic Zelazny: the merging of man and mythology. In this case, the mythology is entirely alien (the Pei'an pantheon), and, as seems to be the norm for Zelazny, the man (Francis Sandow) is darn near immortal. Also, as usual for Zelazny, the magic is there. My only complaint with the book is that I wish there were more of it. There's an awful lot of stuff that Zelazny hints at that could form entire books on their own. Unfortunately, the only other book with this main character in it is "To Die in Italbar." It's been a while since I read that book, but I remember it as also being very good. Wishing for more, I rate this book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.

Eye of Cat: Usually, I really like Zelazny's work. Unfortunately, in this case, he's just gone too far with his mythological basis. I'd estimate that more than half of this book consists of nothing but his interpretation of snippets from Navajo mythology stuck smack in the middle of a story. There IS a decent action-packed plot buried in there, but it's just overwhelmed by the mythology. By the end, the whole thing becomes a psychological "experience" as Zelazny basically drops the plot so the protagonist can confront himself. Even worse, the very last pages leave me unsure about whether or not he succeeds. With a tighter linkage between mythology and plot, this could have been an excellent book. But, because the two elements are so disjoint, and because Zelazny emphasizes the mythology over the plot, it just fails. So, unfortunately, I have to rate this book at a Not Very Good 2 stars out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars The Waters of Acheron.......2005-02-28

Roger Zelazny has a tendency to create main characters who are either eternal or have lived a very long time. This isn't a fault, because he relies on this only to establish the depth of the character, not as a major plot device. In fact, perhaps the biggest lesson his heroes learn is that, if you live forever, you can make a lot of enemies. Some of them aren't even your enemies.

Francis Sandow is on such mein character. After a shaky star in this century, modern science and sheer luck have contrived to make him the worlds oldest rich man. The luck was falling into the hands of the Peians, who taught him how to create worlds and some experience in the fine are of revenge. Worldscaping is the basis for his money, but it didn't save him from offending people.

One such antagonist has taken up stealing the dying personality tapes of some of Sandow's best friends and enemies in an effort to lure him to the Isle of the Dead. His offense was to be a human and qualify for the honor of bonding with a Peian god and becoming a planetscaper. A Peian who didn't pass the grade took offense and has spent several hundred years working on getting even. Now he has reconstructed the people and Sandow bites the lure.

Of course, the revenge you see is not necessarily the revenge you get. Things go awry in spectacular style. Sandow is forced to incarnate Shimbo, the Shrugger of Thunders, and suddenly the scope of the conflict goes out of control. Anotherr truth about Zelazny is that even his villains have redeeming traits, and in this wry but tragic tale, the reader will find it hard to dislike anyone.

For some reason, Isle of the Dead has remained one of my favorite Zelazny stories. I won't claim that it is his best, but it pushes all the right buttons for me and I keep coming back to it. Sandow is my kind of hero - a bit of a rat, but basically a good guy in a tough universe. He has every excuse to be bitter, but he refuses to crumble. In any case, this book has a habit of regularly going out of print. If you are a Zelazny fan than find it how you may, I promise you will find it worth the effort.

4 out of 5 stars 1 great book, 1 good chunk of Zelazny........2002-08-17

I'm writing this because nobody else bothered, and a writer of his caliber deserves reviews on everything he ever produced.

Well, this is the trouble with double editions: it's impossible to issue a single rating, especially when the two works have markedly different levels of quality, as in this one. So, I'll just do the two separately.

Isle of the Dead: Really ... cool. THIS is why we read Zelazny 30-odd years after he set this stuff to paper. Of the SF novels of his I've read, this belongs on that top tier, shared with Lord of Light and at most one or two others. Where sometimes his dazzling style wanders a bit into navel-gazing(which is why he was so bloody good at short stories: they minimize such tendencies), here the descriptions are sharp, the narrator is one of his classics, and the ideas are captivating. The controlling metaphor is pretty cool, the action is exciting, and the psychology of the narrator kept me riveted. In short, this novel is EXACTLY what one thinks when s/he thinks of "good Zelazny". 5 stars.

Eye of Cat, on the other hand, seems more like what happens when the old master just sits down and decides, "hey, I'll write a story about X". It's still good; I mean, the man's talents wouldn't have let him write complete tripe if he tried. There are some very interesting moments, too; Cat is a striking presence, and some of the throw-away lines are great. His exploration of "primitivism", however, is patchy, and some parts aren't very convincing; in certain spots he even sounds almost a bit bigoted (people from old tribal cultures can't order their thoughts?), even though it is clear he has respect for Native American cultures. Also, parts of the plot meander and drag. All in all, it's a must-read for those of us hungry for more books that have that signature Zelazny style, but if it weren't in this double, I'd tell you to leave it for later.

So: one good + one great novel by Roger Zelazny makes this a good value and a must-buy, but remember, it's the second, shorter one that's the best part.

5 out of 5 stars A concise, compelling epic.......2000-09-25

One of Roger Zelazny's finest novels, this tale of a man who embodies an alien god encompasses science-fiction, mythology, psychology, and the poignancy of being human - and does so in well under 200 pages. There's no overload of unconvincing background minutiae here - with no more than a few colorful strokes, Zelazny creates a rich and meaningful universe for his flawed protagonist Francis Sandow. What begins as a confrontation between two powerful men swiftly becomes a private apocalypse between two gods ... without ever losing its human scale. Dazzling, exciting, moving, satiric, this book deserves to be reprinted soon!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Pilates.......2007-04-09

For those just getting into Pilates, this book is an invaluable training tool. This manual will teach you all the basic exercises.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-01-12

If you have ever used an exercise ball, this book has nothing new to offer. I bought the book specifically for the CD. The CD is terrible - really no program to follow. It is so basic and doesn't take you through an organized routine. I looked through the book; watched the CD one time, and the book is now in my garage sale pile!!

4 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners.......2007-01-10

This is a beautiful book, but I didn't learn anything new. I'm a personal trainer, and I already knew most of the exercises in this book. I think it would be very good for beginners, but not for the more advanced.

5 out of 5 stars Great results!.......2007-01-01

I've always been fairly fit, but the pilates workout in this book has improved my level of fitness and flexibility. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great program!.......2006-03-04

I've been doing Pilates on the Ball by Colleen Craig for a year now. The book alone is not enough; the DVD is essential. I keep one eye on the TV, both ears on the gentle background music and Ms. Craig's voice, and my whole body relaxed, as Ms. Craig leads me through my 45 minute workout, both verbally and visually. I'm in my mid-60's, and this program is helping my posture stay young and my body strong. I've recommended it to several colleagues, and I'd recommend it to anyone. Ms. Craig speaks the instructions on the DVD, so you can follow the exercises even if you can't really focus on the TV screen as you do them. She speaks to bodies which have sore backs or sore knees, and advises people how to be careful so they don't get injured. I just love this program!

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book..........2005-06-18

I cannot remember the last time I went through a cookbook and listed dozens of recipes I want to try. This kind of homey cooking is so appealing. The photos are superlative. We are planning a trip to northern Indiana as a result of reading this book. The resources in the back of the book for places to eat, stay, and see will be most helpful.

5 out of 5 stars best book on amish and their cooking.......2003-04-04

This book is awesome. Not only does it have wonderful recipes, especially desserts, which the Amish are famous for, but also has so much wonderful info. on the Amish people and their culture. I own several books about the Amish, and this is better than those other books even though this is a "cookbook." And the pictures are marvelous. Other than general info. on the Amish, my favorite part of this book is the fact that she divides the food into many different chapters and has a little story about each. An example is Baking Day, Lady Food, and the lunch bucket, as well as many other. This has info scattered throughout it about gardening by the signs of the moon, how to bake perfect cookies, and how to bake an angel food cake. I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Finally had to buy it!.......2002-01-26

I discovered this book over a year ago, at the public library. I read through it, and after I returned it I would find myself thinking: "I wonder about ", and either my wife or I would have to go back to the library to check the book back out!
When I realized I was getting the book almost monthly, AND it stayed at the local branch because that's where I last returned it, I realized it was time to buy it!

With that little story, the rest of this review is simple: This is an excellent cook book. This is not a 'healthy' cookbook. There's no focus on lean, loosing weight, or heart-happy cooking here! This is good, rich, smother-it-in-gravy country cooking.

If you know the Amish, and you have visions of the men coming in at dusk from working the fields all day to a kitchen table stacked with fresh, home-cooked *American* food, this is your cookbook. It simply doesn't get better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2001-06-20

Originally from the heartland of Amish Country in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, I found this cookbook outstanding. It bring's back many memories as a kid with it's recipes. I live in the sunshine state now and sometime's miss the great food I was raised with. To have found this book and have been able to make the recipes for my family has been great! I hope Marcia Adam's plan's on writing more like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2000-05-08

This is not only a great cookbook, but also provides an insiders look at the interesting life of the Amish and Mennonites. The pictures are beautiful, and make one long for the simple life they live. I have all of Ms. Adam's cookbooks, and cherish them like old friends!

1 out of 5 stars Good pictures - but OUTDATED!.......2007-04-14

Check the publication date for this book. I had a copy of this one in high school! Good pictures (especially of East Atlantic animals) but forget the care information - hopelessly outdated.

4 out of 5 stars An essential field guide..........2004-07-03

and book for the determined aquarist. However, this book is geared more toward aquarium species than ones found in the ocean or freshwater lakes. For instance, the Asian pufferfish is a species that has never been mentioned in any field guide, except this one. Without a doubt, it is an aquarium hybrid. There are not very many species of betas, fightingfish, or goldfish covered here. A person looking for heavy coverage of that will be slightly disappointed.
The other fishes covered, such as puffers, triggerfish, or cowfish, have more species listed, and more details given. People interested in pufferfish (such as me), will find this guide useful. The only downside that takes away one star is that some species are hybrids, including betas and goldfish. Most triggerfish and cowfish are authentic species.
If you are looking for a field guide to take along with you on a scuba diving trip to the Caribbean, forget it. This is not the one. However, if you are searching for fish to put in your aquarium, this book is definetely for you..

2 out of 5 stars A good review of fish but a bad guide for setting aquarium.......2002-12-02

I bought this book as a fish familiarization reference after setting up my aquarium with another book and am glad I did. To say this is a bad intro book on aquariums is an understatement. Anyone considering fish as a hobby would immediatly change their mind upon reading the introduction to this book (which covers setting up an aquarium). For one thing it is way too scientific with diagrams of how pumps work and loads of discussion on things you don't need to know in detail and glaring lack of easy to understand explanations on what you do need to know.

I read a 40 page Wal-Mart book on setting up an aquarium that was 100 times better than this guide in that respect. So, if you're setting up a new aquarium and want to know (in English) how to set up an aquarium, or want to know information on aquarium products, chemicals, techniques, etc. don't use this book to do it. Any of a dozen short, "so you want to buy a fish" guides will do. You don't need to 4 pages of when/how/why to quarentine fish in order to set up your first aquarium. And even if you did, this book doesn't describe the "how-to's" well enough anyway.

This book IS a pretty good guide to freshwater and saltwater fishes, plants, reptiles, and invertibrates (like crabs, starfish, etc.) It covers about 300 specimens in total, 88 of which are freshwater fish and about 100 salt water fish. The rest fall into the other categories. It's not comprehensive by any means. There's ONE entry for Goldfish, for instance, even though there are dozens of readily available variations of goldfish. The one entry will give you generally what you need for the entire family, but it won't show you pictures of the many flavors available. Many generally available fish are also not in the book at all - but most are.

This book does, however, cover a good range of common freshwater and saltwater aquarium fish. And each entry discusses what you need to know about that fish such as required temperature, food, characteristics, behavior and what other fish (or fish types) it gets along with. All this information is necessary to have a happy community (or species) aquarium.

This book does Not adequately cover breeding fish and other expert topics. Its claim as "A guide for beginners and experts alike" is a bit of an overstatement in that regard. (At least that's my opinion.)

My conclusion is that I like it for what I got it for - pictures of possible additions to my aquarium with a general description of needs, behavior, etc of each fish. I didn't buy it as a comprehensive guide or a guide to setting up my aquarium. In my opinion, if you want that information go elsewhere. There may even be better pictoral fish guides, but I liked the compact size of the book and the easy to swallow ($$) price tag. Happy Fish Keeping

5 out of 5 stars Great reference guide for those who keep pet shops to kids!.......2002-04-24

Awesome reference guide (I have a 1977 edition).

Over 300 full-color photos of freshwater & marine fishes, plants, reptiles and invertibrates. Includes common names, scientific names, families, distribution in the wild (where do these things live), a good verbal description, as well as a good photo, pH, temperature, water hardness, light and other pertinent info about where it lives, and what it needs in an aquarium, feeding info (a bit sketchy there, unless you are already knowledgable), as well as behavioral and compatability information (a MUST for keeping social fishes with others, and keeping those that don't get along apart from each other!)

Basic aquarium knowledge is not required to enjoy the book, but to use the technical stuff for fish keeping, one must have some other background info (another book on the basics, or several trips and brain picking of a reputable pet shop employee is helpful!)

Basic chemistry knowledge (especially dilutions [YES! There really is a use for all that math you took through jr. college!] for the disease treatment section is a must of using this to treat diseases)

Fish diseases section is small, but to the point, and covers most common diseases one will see in aquarium fishes, especially fresh water.

If you want to keep a salt water aquarium, this is a good reference, but you'll also need a great salt water aqaurium book!

My edition also does not cover Chloramines, which were added to our tap water after the book was published - use GOOD, distilled bottled water whenever possible, or perhaps a reverse osmosis system w/ filteration, if your house is so equipped. For salt water, I've found it best to change out water directly from the ocean (away from the coastline and rivers), but then too you risk getting diseases in your aquarium that way... I did keep a star fish (sea star)and a Spanish Shawl nudibrach in a goldfish bowl this way for about 3 years, then when we moved sent them back to the ocean... They were awesome, but required we change the water abuot every 2-3 days.

This is an awesome book, great pictures, but I'd suggest also getting another to supplement this one... My supplement is about 30+ years old, and is no longer in print, and I've not seen one in years.

4 out of 5 stars Easy To Use!!!.......2001-11-30

YES, as title says - Simon and Schuster's Nature Guide Series - and I have several, are extremely easy to use. They do not contain alot of details about subjects - but enough to identify different aquarium fishes. And the pictures are quite good.
I have enjoyed this book and utilized it often to identify many fish.

          Book Description

Cigar Box Labels: Portraits of Life, Mirrors of History pays tribute to cigars and the pictorial glory of Victorian-era cigar box labels, a unique form of commercial advertising that flourished in the business place a century ago and helped drive cigars to widespread prominence in American society. Those who fancy these stunningly beautiful paper images as a hobby are in the midst of the hottest area of antique tobacco advertising collecting today. Showcased here are some of the finest and most desirable examples produced by the old stone chromolithographic method between 1860 and 1910. This book also explores some of the rich historical past that surrounds cigars-their manufacture, marketing, and, most of all, their mystique. Also featured is a potpourri of contemporary anecdotes, poems, and other bits of literary whimsy designed to amuse, educate, and titillate the imagination.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended - Especially for Newbies.......2004-06-09

I admit it, I know nothing about gardening. I just figured out the difference between an annual and a perennial. This book is amazing. It's simple and easy to use. The book is mostly pictures but there's also descriptions of what plants are included in the pictures. You can also learn how to draw bed layouts. If you're new to gardening, pick this one up for some great idea.

          4 out of 5 stars A useful collection.......2003-12-06

Beds and borders are the heart of most gardens and finding new ideas for creating and improving them is always a treat. In this book Taunton Press has collected more than twenty of the best articles on the topic from its "Fine Gardening" magazine. They deal with issues such as design strategies, plants, techniques, and there is a special section on problem solving. Each article has a tiny photo and very brief bio of the writer so you get a sense of their background.

The illustrations in these books, as in most Taunton books, are just gorgeous and the individual topics are well chosen. My favourite was "Lacing the Border with Beauty" which showed ways to lighten the border with lacy foliage and delicate flowers. The writer came up with ideas I'm dying to try, along with a list of lacy garden plants.

Each article has a fresh approach, new ideas to solve problems such as a hot climate, wet soil, rocky soil and techniques for choosing and planting shrubs, perennials and annuals.

The pleasure of books of collected articles is that you get a taste of many approaches without having to wade through thousands of words from any one writer, This lightness of touch, together with the careful selection of articles and first class illustrations make this book a delight.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Gardening Design Guide to island beds and borders.......2001-05-01

"Creating Beds and Borders" is a volume in the series of 'Fine Gardening' Design Guides issued by the Taunton Press. The book consists of separate articles by various contributors to 'Fine Gardening' magazine. Continuity is supplied by the subject matter, garden beds and borders.

This book's articles are grouped into four sections: (1) Design Strategies; (2) Great Border Plants; (3) Special Techniques; (4) Garden Gallery. It begins with four articles on the design of island beds and borders. Plant selection and placement are the topics covered by the majority of the essays, along with techniques for starting and renovating perennial beds. Gardening in the shade, in bogs, and in Southeastern heat and humidity all receive special attention in section four.

The one topic I felt could have used more coverage was flower bed edging techniques. One of the authors advocated a six inch by six inch trench to separate the bed from its surroundings. Another author, Sydney Eddison wrote an interesting article on "Good Looks Begin at the Edge," but she concentrates on edging plants, rather than on the physical separation of bed and lawn. Perhaps a future volume in the 'Fine Gardening' series will address the challenge of excluding the lawn from the flower bed (information I could certainly use).

Because it discusses a technique we're currently experimenting with, my favorite article in "Creating Beds and Borders" is "Roses Enliven a Border" by Judith C. McKeon. Up until a few years ago, we segregated all of our roses into one bed, away from the other perennials (I don't remember why). However, McKeon advocates growing roses as specimens in a mixed border:

"When shrub roses are grown as graceful specimens in the mixed border, they become part of its architecture, giving structure and a substantial backdrop for perennial companions. Like other ornamental deciduous shrubs, roses enhance the garden with the seasonal interest of their flowers, foliage texture and fruit displays."

I would only disagree with McKeon's recommendation to use the old Alba rose, 'Konigin von Danemark' as part of a mixed border. Our specimen of 'the Queen' is a hefty seven-footer and she is absolutely covered with thorns. Even the thorns have thorns. If you plant one of these royal ladies in your border, you'll never work in there again unless you cover yourself in leather.

'Konigin von Danemark' is a beautiful, raspberry-scented rose that could possibly be used as a deer hedge. For a mixed border, try other McKeon favorites such as 'The Fairy' or 'Gertrude Jekyll'.

Color photographs grace almost every page of "Creating Beds and Borders". It is not organized as a reference book per se, but is a collection of beautifully illustrated and well-written essays for (most particularly) the American gardener.

            Book Description

Since the mid-twentieth century Ugaritic studies has witnessed an enormous increase of edited texts. Naturally, but scattered in numerous publications, at the same time huge advances have been made in epigraphy, grammatical analysis and lexicography.

The current dictionary is an updated and considerably augmented English edition - prepared by W.G.E. Watson - of G. Del Olmo Lete and J. Sanmartín, Diccionario de la lengua ugaritica. It systematically brings together all insights gained so far, and provides answers to numerous existing lexical problems by applying new techniques of lexicographical analysis, and at the same time drawing from conclusions reached in other branches of Semitic philology.

The work is a complete inventory of words (morphemes) and meanings, affixes and proper names of Ugarit as studied so far. With isolexemes, full bibliographical references and translations in context.

A true, modern and indispensable key to understanding Ugarit.

              Book Description

Ugaritic, discovered in 1929, is a North-West Semitic language, documented on clay tablets (about 1250 texts) and dated from the period between the 14th and the 12th centuries B.C.E. The documents are of various types: literary, administrative, lexicological. Numerous Ugaritic tablets contain portions of a poetic cycle pertaining to the Ugaritic pantheon, but there are also administrative documents that shed light on the organization of Ugarit, thus contributing greatly to our understanding of the history and culture of the biblical and North-West Semitic world. This important reference work, a revised and translated edition of the author's Hebrew publication (Beer Sheva, 1993), deals with the phonology, morphology and syntax of Ugaritic. The book contains also an appendix with text selections.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars When they said "reference work", they meant it........1998-12-29

The book seems to be for people who already know Ugaritic and just want a comprehensive reference, assyriologist types who already know several semitic languages and just want to be able to formulate opinions about Ugaritic, etc. The book is NOT suitable for someone who just wants to use it to learn the language. Normally, I am not afraid to use reference books as text books as I am used to making my own lesson plans and the like, but this book does not even have a glossary. The texts in the back are provided in Latin transliteration, so there is no way to familiarize one's self with the cuneiform alphabet other than completely self devised excercises or aquiring cuneiform texts from other (probably comparably expensive) sources. The book is a fantastic reference, however, and makes wonderful efforts to make Ugaritic useful to scholars of Biblical Hebrew, showing how Ugaritic has possibly shed light on a number of Biblical passages and constructions. As a reference, the book is excellent, but there is no glossary of linguistic terms, so if you do not know what a voiceless aspirated labio-dental fricative phoneme or a jussive or cohortative is, you may need a dictionary. Most terms will be familiar to those who have studied Biblical Hebrew though. Overall, the work is for scholars and quite a good treatment of the language, but even a scholar will havbe dificulty relying on this book to learn the language. Excellent reference work. Nothing more. As a reference, I would give 4 stars, but lack of thought about how they could make the book more suitable for a wider variety of uses (a glossary of Ugaritic vocabulary and more involvement with the cuneiform) forced me to knock it down a star.

                    Book Description

After nearly five centuries, Leonhart Fuchs' herbal, De Historia Stirpium Commentarii Insignes (Notable commentaries on the history of plants), is still one of the most beautiful books in the history of science. The 512 superb wood-cut illustrations set the standard for fidelity and artistry in the depiction of plants. Until the Renaissance, Western herbals were largely repetitions of the work of the first-century Greek physician Dioscorides. In 1530, Fuchs, also a physician, saw an herbal by Otto Brunfels and immediately realized the value to his profession of accurately illustrating and describing plants. His work not only surpassed Brunfels', but achieved a lasting influence that still inspires botanists today. This Octavo Edition shows every detail of Fuchs' herbal and includes an index of modern plant names linked to the corresponding woodcut. Commentary by Karen Reeds.

3 out of 5 stars Masterful Commentary, Dissapointing facsimile.......2007-10-08

The team have done a great job of making this wonderful herbal accessible to the public, however I was disappointed to find that the facsimile volume is only black and white (including the illustrations). Also this edition is entirely in Latin (except for German names given along with the Latin ones on the engraved plates). The second volume contains a number of appendices which discuss the context of the herbal, its predecessors and influences and a few chapters are translated into english. There are colour copies of the engraved and hand coloured plates in the second volume but this is not complete. A lot of work went into this production but for the money I would have expected a colour reproduction showing the work in its full glory!
