5 out of 5 stars Brilliant reimagining of Sunset Boulevard.......2007-06-29

Bruen's no-nonsense powerful prose style is perfectly suited for this kind of noir sensibility, an even darker (if you can believe it) reimagining of the classic SUNSET BOULEVARD. Here you'll find professional heartless criminal, lovers unhinged by cruel affairs, and storyline steeped in a pulp atmospheric feel that goes a few steps farther than you'd ever guess.

Bruen is well-known for his Jack Taylor and Brant series, but give his stand-alone novels a chance if you've never done so before. They're possibly even gutsier, nastier, and more mesmerizing.

5 out of 5 stars "It's About Absolute Devastation".......2007-04-02

"Mitchell" is a hard guy. He is just out of prison after three years of payback for a brutal beating he doesn't remember. But best mate Billy Norton is waiting at the gate with a sweet setup for Mitch as the muscle for a loan shark. Though Mitchell's feeling are mixed. While the perqs that come with the leg breaking are good, he'd just as soon skip another stay at the gray bar hotel. When a job as a live-in handy man for aging actress Lillian Palmer falls into his lap, Mitchell takes a shot - if a somewhat tentative shot for the career criminal - at the straight and narrow.

From this backdrop, the prolific Ken Bruen literally rips out another savage crime novel with more grit than Jones Beach and Bruen's trademark black humor. Lillian Palmer, deliciously demented and coming complete with a sexual appetite that belies her years, provides a bizarre twist to what otherwise may have been a pedestrian and often-told story of betrayal and retribution. But the real brilliance in the author's twisted logic comes in the form of "Jordan", Palmer's mysterious butler who proves to be so much more. Bruen's staccato dialogue and disregard for small annoyances like punctuation or other literary convention add to the quirky appeal of Mitchell and the eclectic cast of thugs and wankers that follow him through the pages of this razor-edged page turner, which should keep you guessing right up to the bloody last sentence.

Adding to Mitch's (and Bruen's) sandpaper charm is an uncongruous and unabashed love of crime fiction and the authors that pen them, with references to Andrew Vachss, Dennis LeHane, and other masters of crime who are liberally quoted and add credibility and depth to an already addictive storyline.

If you haven't read Bruen yet - an unforgivable injustice that he remains relatively unknown, at least on this side of the Atlantic - then "London Boulevard" is a great place to start what you can expect to be a long, entertaining, and brutal acquaintance.

3 out of 5 stars No Sunset Blvd, but pretty good anyway.......2006-06-05

I should say first that Sunset Blvd (which this book is an "homage" to) is my favorite movie. I was really excited by the premise of this book for that reason and in the beginning I really enjoyed it. The writer has a really engaging, fresh, readable style that I liked a lot and the book is true to noir form. And the beginning of the book is really great fun. Unfortunately, though, what was fun in the beginning started to look a little trite after awhile (how many other noir books can the main character mention? yes, we all read them and catch the references, but after a certain point it gets a little ridiculous to have the bad guy quoting Ellroy and such all the time). Also, you spend a lot of time in the middle waiting for the other shoe to drop, plotwise. And, I'm not sure the extra "fleshing out" of certain aspects of Sunset Blvd. make the story any more fun, especially when the author is really kind of just copying certain parts of the Sunset Blvd. story and explaining them more.

Having said that, though, I still really liked the premise, the author's style, and the characters. It's definitely a solidly good, three star book. It's just not *quite* as good a book as it seems to think it is, and much of it is just a little bit TOO much just ripped right out of Sunset Blvd. itself, so I was a little disappointed. I think it is definitely worth reading, though - I really like Bruen's style and will definitely read him again - I can see that maybe when he isn't riffing on another plot he's even better. Overall I think this is a very enjoyable novel with good characters and the only problem is that it takes itself just a little too seriously.

4 out of 5 stars Dark but compelling........2005-04-10

There is something about Bruen's writing which is unique and compelling. His characters are not likable, but we're drawn to them. His writing is spare and sharp. His books are dark and somewhat disturbing, but irresistible. His books are not for everyone, but they certainly are on my must-read list.

5 out of 5 stars If Mickey Spillane wrote with a cockney accent and knew R&R.......2004-01-05

For mystery readers, Ken Bruen is the best kept secret around. For a while it was George Pelecanos but I believe that now the title of "superb, excellent but underappreciated" has been passed to the former Galway English teacher.

I read Bruen's "The Guards" last year and then followed that up with "The White Trilogy," both literary journeys well below the surface of the pool where the bottom feeders live and ply their trade.

Mitchell serves three years for aggravated assault in a London prison. One imagines almost a sullen Steve McQueen-like character, Mitchell never had a recollection of how the crime actually happened since he's a black out binge drinker. We are left to imagine that it was the circumstantial testimony of the victim and Mitchell's good mate, Billy Norton, that get him the sentence.

He gets out and tries to go straight but there's an entire cadre of people who keep setting up roadblocks for him. Billy meets him after his release and wants him to go into the loan shark collection business with him. Briony, his lovely sister, keeps telling him that she and her husband Frank will meet him for dinner, but Frank's been dead for 5 years. And Lillian, the aging actress who hires him to be a handyman on her enormous estate, wants him to be full service handyman. All this while he finds true love in Aisling, who loves him and wants to marry him, and in all of this confusion . . . he does too.

Ken Bruen is like James Crumley, high praise for both. There are no sensitive remarks between buddies and it's sure not written for the movies. It's a stark, tough life. Not everybody makes it and those that do are never the same.

The publishing is of poor quality, with occasional improper spacing, incorrect punctuation, missing periods, reverse quotation marks. But the quality of the work is extremely good. 5 stars. Easily 7 or 8. Larry Scantlebury

SCARRED LANDS FORSWORN, DEAD GOD #2

Vladawen the Titanslayer, the high priest of a dead elven god, continues his quest to resurrect his deity. Following prophecies and portents, he and his companions head first to Hollowfaust, the dread City of Necromancers, and then into the wasteland beyond to explore the ruined cities of the Slarecians, a people so vile the gods and titans cooperated to destroy them.

These fortresses of the unhallowed dead welcome the Titanslayer with gaping maws. He finds there scheming mystics and shambling undead, the vengeful ghosts of those who died in his name, and an enemy who may be even viler than the titans. The resurrection of his god may mean the destruction of all he loves.

Can he forswear his faith to save his world?

The double whammy of successful infertility treatments and an increase in the number of women having children later in life has resulted in a staggering--but perhaps not surprising--phenomenon: a tremendous increase in twin, triple, and quadruple births. When You¹re Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads is an outstanding, much-needed addition to the pregnancy genre for women who face the alternating joy, terror, and ambivalence associated with carrying, delivering, and coping with young multiples.

Subjects like nutrition, mom's changing body and emotions, fetal development, potential complications, and labor and delivery take on new meaning when you add another baby or two to the standard equation. With the goal of minimizing risk factors associated with multiple births, Dr. Barbara Luke and her team of writers cover each subject with a buoyant determination to tell it all and tell it well--avoiding the typical "how to name and dress your twins" issues. Accompanying the detailed medical perspective of Dr. Luke are personal experiences gathered from the journals of a few articulate moms, making each subject as real as it is educational. Simple illustrations, valuable charts (including one to plot and monitor fetal growth in grams or pounds), specific menu examples (like how can you consume 4,500 calories if you're expecting quads???), and lots of reassurance make this book a winner. --Liane Thomas

This book told you how great the author's clinic was, but very little of useful information about your pregnancy. It said you must gain a lot of weight thru any mean possible, including eating junk food. If you didn't follow their advice, your babies would be born premature and/or have low birth weight.

I was depressed after reading the book. I read "What to Expect..." instead, and loved it! I followed their advice and gained only 30 lbs, not 40-50 lb as this book suggested. At 37 weeks, I gave birth to a 8 lb boy and 6 lb 12 oz girl.

5 out of 5 stars The best out there.......2007-08-27

This book is truly the best resource out there for moms carrying multiples. This book provided a lot of reassurance that I could carry triplets, and some great tips for making my pregnancy with the triplets last as long as possible. It really is a must have for multiple pregnancies.

          4 out of 5 stars Informative .......2007-08-23

This is a wonderful informative book for mothers expecting multiples. The nutrition and diet information is great however, I found out I have gestational diabetes and so the menu and diet information was not relevant.
I would have liked if the book also catered to those who have gestational diabetes, preclampsia or other pregnancy complications.

          3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings. . ........2007-08-12

This is a great book in the sense that it made me feel like I had some control over a pregnancy that was high risk. I followed all of the dietary recommendations. I took time off work after about 20 weeks. I thought I was doing everything right. But, I still went into preterm labor at only 30 weeks and my boys were born at 31 weeks. My boys were great size for 31 weeks (4lbs and 3lbs 15.8oz) and had people in the NICU questioning their gestational age (I was positive)! So, perhaps it truly makes a difference for some, but it didn't seem to for me. (Perhaps I would have gone into labor even sooner, but I doubt it.) I do think the book gave me too much confidence that I would carry my boys to term that I failed to do as much research as I should have regarding life in the NICU (where my boys were for 5 weeks, 3 days). Additionally, my OB raised her eyebrows at many of the ideas saying they weren't necessary (too much food, too much weight, etc)--and my OB is one who normally just goes with the flow of things and encourages people to do what is best for them. Keep in mind that although this book is by a "Dr.," this Dr. is not an MD, but someone with a PhD!

5 out of 5 stars You will have a great multiple pregnancy!.......2007-08-07

I picked up a copy of this book as soon as I found out I was expecting twins in 2006. Here is my story...I diligently read the book and found great merit in what the authors had written (all based on research). I followed much of their advice (drinking a gallon of water a day, omega-3 supplements, etc.) and I strongly believe this helped me to naturally deliver healthy twin boys at full term (38 weeks). Both boys had great birth weights: 6lb 10oz and 6lb 12oz. I even worked up until 37 weeks b/c I was so healthy and my doctors had no medical reason to put me on disability. My doctors called me "the poster child for twin pregnancy." I recommend this book to everyone who is pregnant with multiples!

            Book Description

Great recipes are family treasures and America's culinary legacy. But what should be enduring heirlooms are easily lost-gone out of fashion, or locked up in one cook's recipe box. Endangered Recipes showcases dishes in danger of extinction-homey favorites, the kind of food eaten on the summer porch, at the neighbors' house, or with your grandparents.

Lari Robling has tapped into America's food memory bank to unearth almost-forgotten classics such as Welsh Rarebit, Green Goddess Dressing, and Nashville House Fried Biscuits with Homemade Apple Butter. The recipes she's collected reflect the extraordinary range of American cooking, from Parker House Rolls to Crispy Fried Chicken to Homemade Banana Pudding.

Endangered Recipes also contains Robling's own cooking memories and some of the great food stories she's encountered, as well as sidebars that spotlight the people who are "recipe rescuers." The author also includes a practical guide to preserving your own family's food legacy-its recipes and its stories. Now is the perfect time to begin saving-and savoring-our nearly forgotten dishes.

just a wonderfully written, delightful recipe boodk. I savored each page for it's stories, "eye candy" photos of items from bygone eras and Lari's accounts of sweet and happy family memories....i was glad she told me about her book when i met her at Habitat for Humanity in Philadelphia.

This wonderful book is not just full of recipes, but full of memories. Any cook book can list ingredients and directions, but not all of them also contain stories about the recipes. Mrs. Small's Crab Cakes are delicious and I don't blame Dorothy Small for keeping it to herself until the very end.

Thank you, Lari Robling and Mark Thomas.

Lari has bravely written a book that celebrates food as we once loved it-because it tasted good. Each recipe is accompanied by a nostaligic note that enhances its flavor. There are kindly written hints with each recipe that you will hear in your mother or grandmother's voice when you read.
Your heart, soul and stomach will be satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Comfort Food and Classics.......2004-10-31

Lari Robling has written one of the friendliest books around, and user-friendly as well. It is full of classic American home recipes, comfort food, really useable recipes. All those cooks who are weary of the pretentiousness of the glossy magazine presentations, and who want real food in real time are going to love this book. Lari writes as if she is talking to a friend, and she understands what we all have to do in the kitchen to feed our families, but she makes sure we have a good time, too. The stories about the recipes are priceless but this is a book for cooking from, too.

5 out of 5 stars A Book "Too Good to be Forgotten".......2004-02-01

Lari Robling's book "Endangered Recipes, Too Good to be Forgotten," is a pleasurable mixture of food, folklore, stories, and cultural and family history. The recipes and narrative make you want to head for the kitchen and start pumping parents, grandparents, great-aunts and uncles for family dishes and food tales.

From vignettes on several recipe rescuers and "Kitchen Wisdom" tips, to a section on how to collect family recipes titled "Passing Down the Plate," this work has something for anyone who eats, loves, and yearns for a link to their past. All accompanied by a chatty, informative and intelligent narrative. Beautiful work!

1 out of 5 stars Misleading, confusing and out-dated.......2007-07-04

I also found this book extremely outdated (the original version was written in 1987 and there has been an enormous amount of research and experience with captive parrots since then that has revolutionized the way parrots are perceived and kept), with much information that is contradictory, confusing or incomplete. This is indeed a "dangerous" book for someone who knows little or nothing about Amazons (or parrots in general) and is looking for advice and information. Examples: In considering "Amazons as pets" the "warnings" are incomplete and/or euphemistic (most Amazons will outlive their care-takers; they not only "soil things", they are outright destructive if not constantly supervised; owning an Amazon, or any parrot, is a major committment to a labor-intensive responsibility that is time-, energy-, money- and attention-consuming and should not be undertaken lightly); the "Advice for buying" is terrible!! and any parrot book written these days, especially for the American market, is not complete if it does not mention the thousands of parrots that are given up every year to shelters and rescues - many of these birds are desperately in need of a good home and can be adopted by serious people; under "Dangers for your Amazon", fumes from Teflon pans in the kitchen are not mentioned and these can be speedily fatal; the diet advice is simply awful!; advice to breed to preserve the species that are threatened with extinction is completely wrong - parrots bred in captivity do not contribute in any way to preserving the species, as is now recognized by conservationists.
At least one of the addresses given under "Information" is completely out of date; a large number of the references have nothing to do with Amazon parrots, but are about budgies, African grays or Australian parrots - Amazons, as the name implies, come from South and Middle America.
Yes, the pictures are lovely, but the incorrect and misleading information make this book one that should be removed from the shelves.
Anyone looking for good up-to-date parrot information can best consult the Internet - there are a myriad of excellent sites, with forums for questions. Here you can also get recommendations for books that will really be helpful, informative and up-to-date. Be sure to look at many RELIABLE sites to get a good over-view the pro's and con's of parrot owning before beginning - we are talking about living, intelligent beings here, not playthings.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, and dangerous.......2006-11-23

The book not only provides scant and outdated information, some of it is erroneous, and quite a part of it harmful. I am quoting the ones I can remember: amazons, like all parrots, do NOT need to be fed grit; not only cherry, but a lot of other types of fruit tree wood are poisonous to parrots, including apple and apricot; acorns and celery are both harmful to parrots, and should not be fed to them. All in all, this is a guide to quickly and painfully disposing of your pet, and ought to be avoided. I don't give it one star mainly because it has some pretty pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Amazon Parrots Complete Owner's Manual.......2002-06-21

After purchasing just about every Amazon Parrot book out there and being disappointed, I found this one. Instead of pretty photos and general narrative fluff, this book has good solid information for anyone interested in the species. Thank you.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and outdated; wonderful pictures though!.......2000-09-25

As a new Amazon owner I was looking for a species-specific book that would give me detailed information about my blue-front. Unfortunately this book seemed superficial, simplistic, and somewhat out-dated (with some information actually contrary to what is widely recommended now). It has some wonderful pictures, and fragments of useful species information, but overall I think there are better general care books available (certainly more detailed), and this book's Amazon-specific information was sketchy.

1 out of 5 stars Nice Pictures, but the information is very out of date.......1999-04-18

I bought this book to help me learn more about the amazona genus that I was considering as a pet. But what I found was a book written before 1992 which was around the time importation was banned and hand raising and breeding birds within the United States had became more common. This resulted in very little information about todays common amazons. Also, this book described all the the precautions one must take to ensure the saftey of your wild caught bird, precautions that are now just plain useless! Though if what you are looking for is a picture book about amazons, this is almost a good book for you.

              Book Description

However depressing the Depression Era may have been, the manufacturers of glassware did their best to add color to peoples lives. The kitchens of America were awash in blue, green, pink, and golden glasswares, not to mention the opaque hues of Jadite, Delphite, and milk glass. Prominent among them were the milk glass spice shakers shown in this book. They are avidly collected today with lithographed (no decals) apples, birds, butterflies, cherries, cattails, dogs, Dutch motifs, flowers, fruit baskets, hats, figures, leaves, Mexican motifs, musketeers, Niagra Falls, sailboats, and more. For Depression glass collectors and shaker collectors alike, this is a valuable addition to the available literature. Hundreds of shakers are presented in 119 beautiful photographs. Prices are provided for each shaker, with check-off boxes to record additions to your collection. This book will delight and inform.

5 out of 5 stars Great pictures, realistic prices -- a well planned guide........2001-08-05

For the collector of kitchen shakers, especially shakers manufactured by Tipp City, Barbara has successfully captured a diversified collection of patterns and colors which have been wonderfully photographed so that you can see each shaker clearly and precisely. Yes Gene Florence has wonderful depression glass books but Barbara has the best pictures available at a reasonable price, especially to the beginner. A lot of designs have never even been found in a kitchen depression glassware book previously. The GUIDE is arranged to be used as a check off for collectors. Prices are much more realistic than in the latest book by Gene Florence. Nothing against Gene Florence, I have all of his books, but many of the pages are exact repeats of previous editions. Let's give Barbara a chance and a hand for taking on the job of presenting a colorful and informative book on kitchen shakers with realistic prices. I hope she will be motivated enough to come out with a second edition when additional shakers are found for inclusion. I have bought and sold hard-to-find kitchen shakers for over twenty years and I certainly wish this book had happened on the scene a long time ago when prices were $5.00 a shaker. Kitchen depression shakers are very much in demand and a lot of the new collectors need as much information and reference material as possible. Thank you Barbara for your time and effort in this book. This is one dealer that really appreciates it.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT REFERENCE BOOK!.......2001-08-01

Even though this book is limited to a particular group of Depression Era kitchen shakers (milk glass with lithographs and I am biased to these!!), it is an EXCELLENT reference guide for those of you who collect them! And if you do collect them, the check-off boxes are a handy item. GREAT SIZE for taking to those flea markets and auctions to see what you need to have! The prices listed are a good start to bargain with! BEAUTIFUL color photos of the shakers. It sits on my coffee table! Thanks, Barbara!

5 out of 5 stars Go buy it!.......2001-07-31

GO BUY IT NOW! This book is an excellent and virtually complete book of shakers. The pictures are beautiful and the prices are great, too! I would highly recommend this book to shaker collectors as it is much better than any book Gene Florence has ever put out! All I can say is: Go buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars Best book ever!.......2001-07-31

I recently purchased this marvelous comprehensive book and I cannot believe the superior quality! The pictures are unbelievably clear and I love the checkoff boxes to keep my collection organized. The prices are much more accurate than I have ever seen! Say good-bye to Florence and hello to Mauzy!

1 out of 5 stars As Close To Useless As Could Be.......2001-07-19

Awful. Just awful. I know the book is inexpensive, but I literally would not have paid more than 25 cents for it if I had seen it before purchase. Very little information about few types of shakers. Spend a little more for the excellent Gene Florence book.

3 out of 5 stars Errors make me scared to try his plans........2007-04-05

This was one of the first landscaping books I purchased when I moved back to Texas and bought a newly constructed (read barren all but grass) house. It IS very inspirational and I always thought that it would be the first book I would reach for when I could afford to start my major landscaping project around my property. Now I'm ready to really begin planting and I've bought a few other books in the past few weeks to assist me in planning. (Other reviewers who say that you'll also need a plant guide specific to Texas are right, in my opinion. The plants the author picks may do well in Texas, but they're not necessarily natives and some will need special attention in the vastly different growing conditions throughout our great state.) I really thought the other books I purchased would supplement this one but then I sat down with all my books, pencil and graph paper, my property survey, and my local (native) nursery's plant list. I was finally making actual plans, not dreaming about it.

What do I see on page 28 as I work on plans for my front bed? A Red Oak planted 7 feet from the front window. HUH? I'll confess myself to be a novice but I'm not THAT much of a novice! Most people with a shred of common sense know that a tree that will eventually attain both a height and spread of 80 feet should not be planted anywhere near that close to your house.

Sadly, the book does not have any actual photos of the landscape designs presented, only illustrations. Lovely though they may be, they are not necessarily realistic. I'm guessing that a real picture of a Red Oak 7 feet from a home might be hard to find, since few people would be silly enough to do it. Due to my lack of faith in the plans, this book rapidly went to the bottom of the pile for my planning. Even the plant portraits he provides (the only photos in the book) could be found in better books.

Here's something interesting. If you click on the author's name above, you will see that he's produced these landscape designs for almost every region in the US. So, I'm guessing this is actually a mass-market production. I would be interested in comparing the Texas book to the others to see if there are many differences. I have a guess already. In this book, he does discuss hardiness zones but in every other Texas landscaping book I have, the actual regions of Texas are the focus. Hmmm, specifics about Texas in a book with Texas in the title. How novel.

Some books I can recommend wholeheartedly are the following (in the order I think they're useful to my paper and pencil, real, true planning):

Texas Wildscapes: Gardening for Wildlife LOVE LOVE LOVE it! This book does it all. I'm particularly interested in attracting birds and butterflies to my yard. This book discusses the regions of Texas and their different needs, gives you a step-by-step plan for developing your own landscape design and gives a rundown of the needs of local wildlife and instructions for completing specific projects. You will need a supplemental plant guide though because this book is not photo rich in that area. The book was poorly reviewed for having a vast plant list that was not searchable but someone from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. left a review telling how to get the searchable index by e-mail. I got it within hours of sending off a request.

Native Texas Plants: Landscaping Region by RegionWONDERFUL! Gives professional quality landscaping plans for each region plus other landscaping plans for specific needs like wildlife, water, etc. It also has an excellent written and photo description of the plants she uses.

Landscaping with Native Plants of Texas If you're not interested in the Wildlife book above, this one is another that presents a great step-by-step plan for the creation of your own landscape design. Unfortunately, it doesn't give any sample plans for you to look at like Native Texas Plants does. It does offer some useful information about wildlife and xeriscaping.

Month by Month Gardening in Texas: What to Do Each Month to Have a Beautiful Garden All Year (Month-By-Month Gardening in Texas) Excellent book for the planner. Not what to plant but a calendar to tell you when. It might make you puzzle about how hard it is to find a tree or perennials at Home Depot or Lowe's in Fall and Winter but check out your local nursery that carries natives and you'll find plenty.)

Texas Gardening the Natural Way: The Complete HandbookHoward Garrett is widely recognized as an authority on Texas gardening and uses organic methods. The book has an excellent section with photos and descriptions of all kinds of plants but lacks the landscaping plans I was after. Also, they're not all natives although not everyone minds that so I included it in this list because it is a good reference.

5 out of 5 stars Great landscaping guide.......2007-02-20

This book is great -- it has info on lots of local plants that really grow. I think one of the best features are the plans they have for different areas in your yard and sun exposure with excellent renderings to go with them. They even take you through the seasons so you can see how an area looks in December as well as May. Very user friendly!

5 out of 5 stars very helpful, informative.......2007-01-13

Great book, especially for novice garders and those learning gardening in a new climate. Easy to use and full of good ideas.

2 out of 5 stars Not Enough Texas.......2006-12-05

This is an okay general guide for beginners in home landscaping. However, it is not particular to Texas, despite its title. There are only about 30 pages devoted to plant material, and this is not covered in depth. The text makes no real attempt to help gardeners select plant material suitable to the many different soil types and environments found in Texas.

The title and first 10 pages of this book are great. Unfortunately, the task of integrating these principles was beyond the ability of the authors. The 'rest of the book' doesn't really rise above a traditional 'gardening in suburban Austin, Texas.'

The seven principles of Xeriscaping are:
                1. Plan to use your micro-climate instead of eradicating it.
                2. Find out what kind of soil exists on the site.
                3. Select plants that take advantage of your soil.
                4. Limit or exclude turf areas unless you get 50+ inches of rain per year.
                5. Create irrigation systems which conserves water and maximize the benefits of what gets used.
                6. Use mulch to retain moisture.
                7. Minimize use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

These 7 items become chapter headings for the rest of the book. Several of these chapters can stand alone: soil analysis, efficient irrigation systems, minimal use of chemicals and using mulch. The other three, planning for your micro-climate, finding plants suitable for your soil and micro-climate and using appropriate turf require an integrated view. Unfortunately, he authors of each chapter seem to focus on their subject and ignore the other 6 principles. The chapter on planning ignores any discussion of microclimate. The chapter on soil analysis offers no guide for self-testing or getting with a lab. The chapter on plant selection never mentions micro-climate or soil type. The chapter on turf does little more than promote the use of turf irrespective of micro-climate.

Publication of a good Xeriscaping book for the diverse micro-climates and soil types of Central Texas remains an often discussed but illusive goal.

                            Book Description

Should African American be construed as a race or as an ethnic group? If African Americans are defined as an ethnic group, what role does culture play in their lives and how can we measure their culture? This groundbreaking volume argues that we reject the concept of race and define African Americans as a cultural group. It presents the first scale ever devised for measuring acculturation among African Americans, along with powerful studies that empirically explore the role of culture and acculturation in African American behavior, health, and psychology. Among the authors' findings are how acculturation predicts symptoms--such as depression and anxiety--and physical problems such as hypertension. Public and mental health researchers and professionals will find this book an intriguing and useful presentation of an emerging approach to psychological and health theory and practice. "I found this volume to be compelling and informative. I believe that this book will stimulate a great advance in the way we conceptualize African American psychology in particular and psychology in general. The authors do an outstanding job of integrating perspectives from multiple disciplines into a psychological perspective and then in applying that perspective to their empirical work. . . . This is a wonderful book and is of great service to the field." --Hardin L. K. Coleman, Ph.D., Department of Counseling Psychology, University of Wisconsin
