Book Description
Two centuries ago, with the support of the young Revolutionary government, George Robers Clark led a small but fierce army west from Virigina to conquer all the territory between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Here is the adventure, the romance, the struggle, and the betrayal of his life. Rich in the heroic characters, meticulously researched detail and grand scale that have become James Alexander Thom's trademarks, LONG KNIFE, his first historical epic, is simply unforgettable.
Customer Reviews:
riveting piece of history..........2007-03-08
a piece of American history that is overlooked so easily in an fascinating tale by James Thom. Mr Thom combines history and storytelling to make this story of the Northwest campaign of George Rogers Clark into an American hero.
Incredible story of harship and American heroism.......2004-11-20
What an incredible tale! Most people focus on the campaigns east of the Appalachain Mountains when it comes to the Revoultionary War...but very few are aware of the details of the campaign by George Rogers Clark to take the Nowrthwest Territory west of the mountains.
And nobody tells such a tale better than Thom.
Despite recruiting a far smaller force than desired, George Rogers Clark set out to do the impossible, displace the French, to defeat far superior British forces, defeat or pacify far superior numbers of Indians, to control as big as the thirteen colonies...and to succeed with less than 200 men.
This is a story of the classic American spirit overcoming all odds to win for liberty. Sadly, it is also a tragic tale about how a true American hero was forgotten by the country that should have hailed him alongside Washington in so many ways.
If you are interested in American history, and want to read a finely researched piece of that history presented in as compelling a fashion...read Long Knife.
Not a quick read, but well worth it........2003-02-01
This is the second book I've read by James Alexander Thom. I love the way this author writes. Like the first book that I read, Follow The River, this book pulled me in and I couldn't wait to get back to reading it to see what happened next. Thom does a superb job in his research. I read the book over the Christmas holiday when I was travelling. After the holidays I happened to catch a History Channel presentation on George Rogers Clark. To my surprise, Thom was included among the experts that they interviewed. I would recommend that anyone who likes to read about history and have it brought to life in the story read this book. I can't wait to read another book by Thom.
long knife.......2002-03-24
this story shows how the efforts of "george rogers clark" contributed to the growth of this country. we are used to hearing about the exploits of the revolutionary war but not often do we get a chance to know what was going on in the northwest territory. this is one of the best books i have ever read that covers how important a part was played by what was happening there. i recommend this book as an excellent read and most informative.
Not one of Thom's better works........2001-10-28
I believe this was Alexander Thom's first novel, and it certainly reads like a first time effort. It's not half as good as his later works like "Follow the River" or "The Red Heart." In "Long Knife" Thom recounts Patriot George Rogers Clarke's epic march during the Revolutionary War to destroy British power on the western frontier. Thom is only partly successful in relaying this powerful tale into a moving work of fiction. The weakest element is a cliched and poorly developed romantic subplot involving Clarke and a Spanish commandant's sister. Pretty amateurish stuff. However, the strength of the novel is, of course, Clarke's army's 240 mile epic winter march, including long stretches through icy waist-deep water, to attack the British fort at Vincennes. It's here where Thom really shines bringing immense detail to the agony and fatigue faced by those men. (It's actually very reminiscent of Kenneth Roberts' description in his terrific novel "Northwest Passage" of a similar march by the famed Robert Rogers and his Rangers during the French and Indian War.) Unfortunately, Clarke's march is just a small part of the book and, although it's historical fiction writing at its best, it does not completely atone for the weak parts of "Long Knife."
I would recommend this book to Revolutionary War buffs and Alexander Thom fans. However, if you're new to Alexander Thom then I would recommend you check out some of his later books before reading "Long Knife," his first attempt at a historical novel.
Book Description
"I Never Knew the Knife Man's Name" is a selection of memories from the author's one-woman show of the same name. The show, which is performed for groups throughout the country appeals to men and women from Baby Boomers to Golden Agers. The chapters of the book deal wistfully and humorously about the way life used to be from ice cream parlors with swivel seats and 10 cent cones to home deliveries, having a "colored" cleaning woman, simple food simple times, and simple pleasures. You'11 laugh, you'11 cry, you'11 nod in agreement, you'11 reminisce. Most of all, you'11 enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
Best Volume of RG Veda ever!.......2007-07-13
(NOTE: I'm using my dad's account)
Although the earlier volumes of RG Veda bored me to tears and annoyed me a bit- this is the best volume I've read of RG Veda, yet! It's in this volume where we meet the mysterious General Jikokuten (who before had never even shown their face to the other Generals), The Five Stars arrival to Zenmi Castle, the revealing of the Last Star, and the dramatic meeting of Ashura and his traitorous mother, Shashi.
However, this is also where the real tragedy begins in RG Veda- besides the massacre of the Yasha tribe, and the tragic deaths of Gigei, a close friend of Ashura's; Rasetsu, Lord Yasha's brother; and Shara, Rasetsu's kind wife. The most light-hearted of the main characters is killed, and a favorite character with a seemingly kind personality turns out to be the exact opposite as everyone once knew her. (Also she seems to have no problem attempting to battle, and even kill her love, despite the fact that she stated many times in the series how she chouldn't bare for her love to perish).
The mysterious and light-hearted Kujaku is shown his serious side and we finally see one of the many unknown truths about him, and a "similarity" he has with the ruthless God King Taishakuten. It is also during this volume where the sweet and loving Ashura changes forever and is then finally released as the true King of the Ashuras.
The artwork and battle scenes are simply breathtaking and is, which I believe, one of CLAMP's masterpieces- even though RG Veda is not as well known as Cardcaptor Sakura or Chobits. RG Veda should be getting more credit then it is, and the series also shows that CLAMP can do tragedies just as well as they can do light hearted comedies such as Angelic Layer or Magic Knight Rayearth (which also has some tragic elements).
I would not recommed this series for anyone younger than 13 or 14 mainly because of the brutal violence (which happens more often after volume 5).
I've read this volume of RG Veda more then ten times all ready, and I can't get enough of it! I can't wait for volume ten!
RG Veda volume 9.......2007-06-11
The battle is on. Ashura and his gang has finally entered the castle.
Here Ashura finally meets his mother, but things take an unexpected turn from there.
An unexpected enemy showes up, a new general, some one will die, but who?
Fantastic!.......2006-12-03
For those who rated this badly....DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This story is complex and meant for older readers. The plot is very serious and tragic. If you can't take things like that, then don't read it. This story is neither romantic nor a comedy. Despite the lack of elements that most readers typically enjoy, it is an awesome series. I first read the Chinese edition and bought all ten of the books. Reading it in English, however, is a different experience because of cultural differences that would affect translations. The point is, THIS SERIES IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my faves!.......2006-11-10
Please remember, this is CLAMP's 2nd series, and is still very green, so keep the insults to a minimum.
I really enjoyed reading this manga. However, the only problem with it is that the first volume is slow. But, after that, the story line is very dramatic, and for the older readers. While some people *cough cough* who wrote a studid review because the simply can't handle the serious plot line. i reccommned this serious for people who can handle a serious plot, if you are looking for funny CLAMP manga, I recommend Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, CLAMP School Detectives, xxxHolic, or Chobits.
I am...THE FANTASY CRUSHER!!!(and, I'm a GIRL, too...).......2006-07-11
I'm sorry if I totally piss off anyone who absolutley LOVED this book...but I can have my own opinion! It's LEGAL!!! Yay! I am hereby giving this book a terrible rating simply because I don't like it. The plot confuses me. I mean, it's people killing people because they hate them for reasons that don't really make much sense most of the time, and the warrior main character guy whose name I always forget is totally booooring. I don't care if he looks a little hot or not! And Ashura, or whatever his name is, is a sissy. Seriously. He looks like a girl. He acts like one too. Maybe he SECRETLY...likes...avacados! That would explain a lot...Anyway, the plot is also too serious, and it doesn't have much comic relief. The only guy who I think is funny...doesn't show up all that much. And I forgot what his name is, too. See?! THIS PROVES IT! The manga is so unmemorable, I forgot everyone's name! I have also read up to the fourth book, so it's not like I didn't give it a chance! Anyway, if you like books that are kinda funny...do not waste your money on this book! Save your green! RUN AWAY! WAAAAAAAAAUUUUUGGGGGGHHHH!!!!Keep running! WAAAAAAAUUUGGGHH! Oh, and, if you couldn't tell, I like books with comedy in them. I don't know why. Anyway...WWWAAAAUUUUGGGHHH!!!

I keep this with me all the time!.......2007-09-17
I am on a low fat diet for health reasons, and this is a quick reference book that I can keep in my purse. Very convenient!
This works better than anything else I've tried so far.......2006-09-29
I'm buying this updated guide for the 2nd time - 12 years ago I lost many pounds that I kept off for over 5 years using this plan. Then after going off and gaining, a few years ago I tried the fad low-carb plan and lost lots of weight and gained back double. So I'm doing this one (T-factor) again because I know it works for me long-term.
The little book is great and fits easily in a purse to carry around wherever you go so you can check calories, fat grams etc. and it includes well-known restaurants/fast food items as well, so you can really compare before choosing foods. It's also great for cooking and knowing fat/calories of each ingredient as you prepare your meals.

Customer Reviews:
The Best Grilling Book I Own.......2006-11-22
I bought this book on a whim and have been amazed at how comprehensive, easy to read and execute, and just fun the book is. My husband has really gotten into grilling in the last year, and we have a small library of top grilling titles, and this is always our go-to. When, for example, we wanted to grill Cornish game hens, this book was the only one with a recipe (and a delicious one at that). If you like grilling, you must own this book!
Best book for developing the skill of grilling.......2006-11-10
Over the last several years I have been working on developing the skill to really make grilling work. I have collected a lot of books on grilling and honestly have found most to be a list of recipes rather than useful information about using the grill. In fact, a lot of them seem to just say "then grill for x minutes" after spending a page on the prep.
This book is different in that it really helps to develop an understanding of how grilling works. This allows me to develop skill, rather than just repeat instructions (with mixed results).
I am most fond of the "101" sections at the beginning of each food type. It really helps to lay out the process. These sections often repeat information shown elsewhere in the book, which at first annoyed me. However, I now find that having it all in one place allows me to quickly review before grilling.
On the negative, I think they went a little overboard with the number of recipes. For example, there are several steak recipes that really are just about how to make a sauce to put on the steak after grilling. The book is fairly priced even if I never use them, but it does force me to sort through a lot of these "quasi" ideas to find the good recipes. Related to that, the attempts to personalize each recipe became tiring. In a few places it was kind of nice, but after a while you feel like you are reading her diary. As my rating shows, neither of these was a big enough issue to detract from the overall excellent nature of the book.
I will be giving a copy out to many people on my Christmas list.
I should know, I tested the recipes!.......2006-01-12
Culinary school did not teach me how to man handle the grill, Elizabeth Karmel did! This book will light your fire and keep it burning; even in mid February when you're sporten your long undies.Taming the Flame is full of great tips, tricks, and techniques. If you don't own this book my guess is you're just flat out grilling wrong!
-Lisa Taylor, VT
Fabulous Flame Tamer.......2005-10-25
If you follow the clear step-by-step instructions from lighting the fire to clean-up and select any recipe in this well written, fun to read book, you will have a wonderful meal and increase your confidence about grillilng.
Catch the Passion & Heat.......2005-07-22
Having sizeable Grill/BBQ cookbook collection already, it takes something to catch my eye and add at this point. Browsing through this one did it.
She is definitely into it, and conveys this energy and expertise in this over 350 page offering. It will provide basics for initiate and wealth of great recipes and tips for all up to expert.
Begins each unit with a 101 intro, as well there is great intro to types of grills and smokers, and glossary and sources along with a menu suggestion section. Nice style with about 20 4 color photos of some dishes makes for an attractive cookbook. Further, great grilling time charts in every section which are very useful!
What caught my perusing eye was such creative entrys as "Beer Can Turkey" (already into the Chicken on the Can); Sweet Pork Sausages in a Dijon-White Wine Sauce; French Onion Dip burgers; Jack and Coke Soaked Pork chops; Portobello Mushroom Dip with Pita Points; Italian Grilled Cheese Skewers; and a terrific twenty source rub and sauce recipe section.
This adds much to the spectrum already out there, including Bobby Flay, James Purviance, Chris Schlessinger, Steven Raichlein, et al. Neat to see the ladies really into great grillin and BBQ, e.g. Karen Adler and Judith Fertig.
Fun book to read and use.

Customer Reviews:
care for your cacti/succulents with a base of knowledge.......2007-07-23
I've read this book from cover to cover a number of times, always exposing more useful information. Particularly of interest are the many excellent photographs, which help us longtime cactus fans who've bought various cacti through the years without knowing what we've bought, or purchasing packets of mixed seeds, stand a chance of identifying these plants. Even in the photos that suggest planting possibilities, the plants are identified. Perhaps the most useful suggestion is the purchase of an inexpensive moisture meter (I picked one up at a ubiquitous discount chain for less than $5 that is a marvel of invention), which showed me that my watering habits needed rethinking. The book is printed on heavy stock, loaded with luscious photographs and details concerning the needs of any particular group of cacti/succulents - yes, there are omissions - the book covers; also there are planting tips, information on growing medium, fertilizing, etc.. Overall, this is a very worthwhile and valuable book for the cactii/succulent enthusiast.
GREAT ADDITION TO MY LIBRARY.......2006-09-24
I've been collecting these wonderful plants for a number of years now and am constantly adding not only plants to my collection, but books. I am glad I added this one! No one book can completely cover every aspect of cacti lore and this one certainly does not, But, this work, added with several others, help to round my research library out. Each new addition, i.e. books, helps and this was certainly a good addition. The text is well done as the author is abviously very knowledgeable and I did like the photographs. I did agree with another reviewer in that the shots from the top of the plant, looking down are indeed pleasing to the eye, but they fail, in some cases, to give a true picture of the plant. I photograph plants and find it is helpful to get side views of different subjects. That is not big deal though. This is a helpful book and I do recommend it highly.
Not Complete but still Very Good.......2004-10-27
The book is very well produced and the photography is very good. The author is well known and respected in Cacti circles and the book reflects his knowledge and status. The first section relates to the history and discovery of cacti and shows some amazing photographs of cacti in their habitat. It goes on to show how best to display your cacti in suitable containers and then a chapter on the differing shapes of the plants and their flowers The plant catalogue itself does not show too many of the different genera, but the popular ones are there and what it does do is show photographs of a number of species within a certain genera and this appeals to me. Too many books try to over-reach themselves and try to cram in as many genera as possible, showing a photograph of one species and very short descriptions of one or two other species. In this book the descriptions of each plant give the average height, flower colour etc. and also the min. temp. each plant will stand. The book shares space equally between true cacti and succulents and they are presented separately which makes the book layout clean and easily readable. At the end of the book are several pages on plant selection in sections, i.e. Plants for beginners; Plants for the Greenhouse; Free Flowering plants etc. This is another plus. One criticism I have is that many of the plants are photographed from directly overhead, this may be aesthetically pleasing, but does not give a true reflection of the size and shape of the plant and is not really my cup of tea. But this is a small moan about what is otherwise an excellent book. At this price the book is a good buy and there is something for everyone interested in the care of these unusual plants. I am happy to have this book in my collection.
Not the "Complete" Book without Yuccas!.......2003-09-29
This is a georgeous book, but it doesn't mention Yuccas at all! There is very little on Agavaceae in general.
The outstanding photography makes it somewhat worthwhile. All of the plants are photographed on white seamless, so they really pop off the page.
Excellent reference, not just for beginners.......2003-02-14
If you had to limit yourself to just one book, this should be that book.
For novices, this book has excellent basic advice for getting started, including many pictures and of how to display and plant them. For those with more experience, the book is a handy first reference before searching a specialized botanical tome.
This book makes the specific point that (popular, commonly available) cacti are no more difficult to grow than any other house plant.
The book thoroughly covers the needs of these plants, including what kind of soil, how much water, what temperature and amount of light they prefer.
The largest section has all of the popular genera, including the tropical varieties. This section has excellent photography of the plants at their best. If a person had a cactus that's in this book, that person would very likely be able to identify it from the descriptions and pictures. The book usually describes the distinguishing feature that classifies the plants of that type.
Typical and maximum sizes are given, along with the plants' growth habits and the age at which they first flower (some varieties do not flower until they are many years old).
Also included in this section is the hardiness, or how cold the plants can get before they die. If you don't live where these plants naturally grow, this is very important information. For instance, many kinds of cactus grow where it snows in the winter and can be grown outdoors in most of the USA.
At least one of each of the different general forms of cactus is shown: columnar cacti, prickly-pear types, barrel types, etc.
Following the section on specific cacti is a fairly representative section on popular succulents. There are so very many different kinds of succulents in the world, even a book ten times thicker would barely scratch the surface. This book concentrates on those species which are most commonly planted alongside cactus.
The lists at the back of the book are almost worth the price of the book itself. There are lists that categorize cacti and succulents in every which way, including many species that were not pictured or discussed in the main sections. There are lists by how easy the plants are to grow ("easy", "moderate", "difficult"), lists by temperature range ("cool", "temperate", "hot"), and other useful groupings. These lists help make this book continually valuable, even as one's experience and knowledge grows beyond the basics.
This author (Terry Hewitt) has written other books on cacti and succulents. Those books are also excellent, and worth purchasing for the unique information that they contain, but mainly as supplements to this book.
There are also other excellent cactus books that are more complete, but also more technical - or more specialized (for instance, there is an entire reference work on just the "opuntia" (prickly-pear) species).
This book is perfectly written for the average amateur cactus lover.

A Visual Feast for the Cactophile.......2005-02-07
This is a terrific book devoted entirely to Cacti (no succulents are shown. The photographs are superb and many of them show plants in their natural habitat.
Each plant description gives brief cultural requirements for the plant shown and these are qite adequate but this is not really what this book is all about. The book is a visual feast of photographs, many of the plants quite rare in cultivation.
The book also uses what may be a unique form of layout, rather than the plants being shown in alphabetical order, they are classified according to their geographical origin.
There is also a place in the book for hybrids and specialist varieties. next to each plant photograph throughout the book there are symbols for light requirement and overwintering.

Book Description
From a child refugee of Operation Pedro Pan, a mission similar to the Kindertransport of World War II and the only political exodus ever of unaccompanied children in the Western Hemisphere, comes this touching tale of adventure and coming of age in America. After Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba, more than 14,000 children, unaccompanied by their parents, were airlifted to the United States in a controversial effort to provide an opportunity for a better life. This book is Elena Maza's page in that great collective story, masterfully captured in a series of interviews.
In 1961, at the age of thirteen, Elena Maza and her two sisters left their parents in Cuba and were placed in foster homes in the United States. Eventually reunited with her parents, who also managed to immigrate, Embracing America is the story of the Maza family's survival and Elena's adaptation to life in the United States. Ironically, Elena left a Marxist revolution to encounter a social one: a civil rights struggle, an anti-Vietnam war insurgency, a women's movement, a sexual revolution, and the drug culture of the 1960s and 1970s.
From childhood exile through the Woodstock Nation to the rediscovery of her Cuban identity, marriage, and the earned respect of the Washington and New York arts and community advocacy scenes, Elena Maza emerges as a remarkable woman who was one of the participants in the significant historical events of the last century.
