Book Description

The secrets of the dead are in her hands.

The bones of three young women are unearthed in the basement of a Montreal pizza parlor, and forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan has unsolved murder on her mind as she examines the shallowly buried remains. Coming up against a homicide cop who is convinced the dead have been entombed on the site for centuries, Tempe perseveres, even with her own relationship with Detective Andrew Ryan at a delicate turning point. In the lab, the clean, well-perserved bones offer few clues. But when Carbon 14 confirms her hunch that these were recent deaths despite the antique buttons found near the bodies, Tempe's probing must produce answers quickly to stop a killer whose grisly handiwork has seen the light of day.

"A riveting new Temperance Brennan forensic thriller from Kathy Reichs, the internationally acclaimed forensic anthropologist and New York Times bestselling author... Temperance Brennan, forensic anthropologist for both North Carolina and Quebec, has come from Charlotte to Montreal during the bleak days of December to testify as an expert witness at a murder trial. She should be going over her notes, but instead she's digging in the basement of a pizza parlor. Not fun. Freezing cold. Crawling rats. And now, the skeletonized remains of three young women. How did they get there? When did they die? Homicide detective Luc Claudel, never Tempe's greatest fan, believes the bones are historic. Not his case, not his concern. The pizza parlor owner found nineteenth-century buttons in the cellar with the skeletons. Claudel takes them as an indicator of the bones' antiquity. But something doesn't make sense. Tempe examines the bones in her lab and establishes approximate age with Carbon 14. Further study of tooth enamel tells her where the women were born. If she's right, Claudel has three recent murders on his hands. Definitely his case. Detective Andrew Ryan, meanwhile, is acting mysteriously. What are those private phone calls he takes in the other room, and why does he suddenly disappear just when Tempe is beginning to hope he might be a permanent part of her life? Looks like more lonely nights for Tempe and Birdie, her cat. As Tempe searches for answers in both her personal and professional lives, she finds herself drawn deep into a web of evil from which there may be no escape. Women have disappeared, never to return....Tempe may be next. With its powerful mix of nail-biting suspense and cutting-edge forensic science, Monday Mourning is the best yet from this superbly gifted, megastar author who, as New York Newsday says, is ""the real thing "

2 out of 5 stars Good science overwhelmed by a variety of uninteresting details.......2007-08-27

I came to Kathy Reichs' work via the BONES TV show, which while far-fetched has an entertaining quality that I thought might be a bit more grounded in her fiction. Well, it is grounded and not in a good way. After wading through Brennan's love life, with a dilemma about her boyfriend's young companion that has an answer so obvious it is insulting that Brennan doesn't figure it out or at least ask the right questions to deal with it, Brennan's friend going through her own marital crisis, and the contentious relationship with one of the investigating officers that seems so unprofessional that I can't believe it hasn't been resolved at this point in the series.
The saving grace is the science that is well explained and fascinating, without the sci-fi elements present in the TV show. The case dealing with the discovery of three bodies in the basement of a pizza parlor leads to a variety avenues of investigation which is well done until Brennan plays hero and the reality is once again drained away from the book. I don't think it's fair to judge a popular series with one book, but if this is a prime example of Reichs' work I'll stick with the TV version.

3 out of 5 stars Monday mourning: a long week reading Kathy Reichs.......2007-08-20

I have been a Reichs fan since the start. Initially I was relieved to find such great books after tiring of the increasing implausibility of the Patricia Cornwell series. However, Monday Mourning is a disappointment. Reichs' strength is her intellectually challenging plots, dropping tidbits of information at regular intervals that occupy the mind without enabling us to solve too much of the puzzle before she does. The second half of Monday Mourning does not disappoint in this regard, if you are still reading by then. But the first half . . . slow, repetitive, riddled with painfully laboured descriptive allusions. It's like watching paint dry. There simply doesn't seem to be enough story for it to have any pace. And without pace, one is left to contemplate the stilted, flowery writing. Brennan herself is annoying. These kinds of books work well too if the central character is interesting. But Reichs has taken to portraying Tempe as a caricature: she has no depth. Same old mindless hostility at Claudel, the endless emphasis on how fresh and emotionally affected she is by "her girls" (the crime victims) despite years in the job (if this was for real she'd have a nervous breakdown), and a demonstration of the relationship skills of a goldfish in her senseless attempts to terminate her relationship with Andrew Ryan, without actually ever asking him why he's seemed a bit preoccupied lately. The only relationship that felt at all real was the one with her friend Ann. As I said, the last part of the plot unfolds in true Reichs style, but if the rest doesn't pick up in the next book, I'll be reading someone who hasn't lost their edge instead.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-06-01

The Kathy Reichs books are made all the better by the TV series Bones. You can visualize the Dr. Brennan perfectly. Gifted writer whose story was so compelling I just couldn't put it down!

4 out of 5 stars Another Solid Performance.......2007-04-25

thoroughly enough Tempe and the people she surrounds herself with. For this one Tempe finds herself helping Claudel investigate the burial of three skeletons in a pizza-by-the-slice joint's basement. Claudel feels the bones are ancient and that it's a non-priority case; Tempe feels differently. The book has a slow start with a few subplots that don't really add to the book (and in fact seem to be a device to make sure one character is available at the end of the book) but don't detract from it either. I figured out the twist about 30 pages from the end; not bad for me when it comes to these sorts of books. I'm not sure if that means the book was a bit more predictable or if it means that I'm getting better at the sleuthing thing. The little blurb in the back of the book advertising for Cross Bones makes me want to run out and snatch that book up to read next.

I'm happy with the way Reichs seems to be working on her annoying habit of giving too much description. She doesn't lapse into that nearly as much in this book as she has in previous ones. Her writing appears to be getting tighter with a better flow. Another satisfying read.

Book Description

What would you do if a dragon came home to roost? More specifically, what if he came to your home? Melvin Harp is having a bad year. Apprenticed to a second-rate magician who is better at creating fireworks than spells, Melvin was certain that he'd never get the chance to be a true wizard. All that changed, however, when one of the magician's fireworks went astray and blew up in a dragon's cave, aggravating the dragon's swollen tooth. Now, with the assistance of a hornless unicorn, a well-read troll, and an Amazon with an attitude, Melvin must travel to the fairy kingdom of Floweria and obtain the services of a tooth fairy to heal the dragon's tooth or the dragon will destroy his hometown of HappyDale. And, since nothing in Melvin's life is easy, along the way he will also have to face gnomes, zombies, vampires, harpies, and, of course, the screaming squirrels.

4 out of 5 stars This book is very good!.......2004-10-16

My nine year old son loved this book. He became completely absored in it and read it in a single day. Here are his comments:

This book is really good. I like it because it has some really funny parts and it also has very strong characters. It held my attention and I couldn't stop reading it.

I recommend this book for anyone who has a child that likes fantasy novels. It is a lot of good, clean fun.

5 out of 5 stars Losing Weight and Feeling Great.......2007-09-11

This book has been a godsend in my life. I had lost 8 pounds by starting walking, got stuck, lost another 8 pounds through Weight Watchers and got stuck again for several months. Finally, I decided to try Dr. McDougall's plan. I had the book for quite some time, but didn't think I could follow his plan. Wow! What a surprise! Not only am I having fun with it, I've lost a total of 22 so far on the McDougall Plan with only 9 left to reach my idea weight and it has been faster than anything I've tried before - about 1.5 - 2 pounds per week. It has been easier than I could have imagined because I am never hungry. For the first time in my life, my body tells me when I am full and I can stop eating. I have always loved starches anyway, and this diet is perfect for me. I've started trying a lot of the recipes and have been thoroughly happy with most of them. I have only one disagreement with Dr. McDougall and that is in the area of plant fats (unprocessed) like avocados. I eat them quite often and am still losing weight and feel great. If I slow down in my weight loss, I may try to cut down, but right now I'm doing too well to change anything.

5 out of 5 stars McDougall Book Lean and Clean .......2007-04-06

Dr. John McDougall is that rare doctor in American medicine: One who tells the truth about the drugs or surgery stance of the AMA. Most refreshing is his absolute candor, leading the reader to wonder at times why his medical license is stil in tact. For those who seek medical truth, it doesn't get any straighter John McDougall.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting information.......2007-03-20

I purchased this book after visiting Dr. McDougall's web site. Actually, almost all of the information in this book can be found at his web site, so if you are looking for new recipes or other information not posted on his site, this is not the book for you. You might want to buy something else, a newer book or DVD. This book outlines his recommended diet and lifestyle for optimal health including the rationale for avoiding certain foods and including others - basically avoiding all animal products and lowering fat intake. There is a 12-day diet plan included as well as various recipes and information on a number of health problems that can be helped by healthy eating. Overall, very interesting reading and a good start for anyone wanting to follow a low-fat vegan diet.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my life.......2007-01-12

This book, and all Dr. McDougall's works, are incredible. So straightforward and sensible. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful bread baking experience.......2007-09-09

This book is just wonderful! I have been baking bread by hand for several years now and have thouroughly enjoyed it, but this book has helped me to stretch beyond the recipe and try some new things. In the past 2 weeks, I think I have made 7 recipes out of this book. I just can't seem to stop. The Bulgur Oatmeal bread, I think, is the best bread I have ever tasted. Absolutely AMAZING! I also made the Sesame Burger Buns, Whole Wheat Long Rolls, Vienna Bread, Pain Campagne and Farm-Style White Bread with Cardamom. I have probably 200 cookbooks and this is my new favorite! A must read!

4 out of 5 stars Bread Bible is Worthy.......2007-07-19

This is a fine cookbook. It explains in detail the ins and outs of yeast and flour. The recipes are good, but I was expecting a little more pizazz, a little more creativity and a few more fundamental recipes. I would like it if next time they include more "bread machine" recipes for a 2 pound loaf, and a few more bagel recipes.

If you need a basic bread book, this one will do nicely.

Weighing almost as much as a small child, Beth Hensperger's The Bread Bible contains 300 recipes, plus slice after slice of baking wisdom. Hensperger certainly knows her bread: she is the author of several other yeasty numbers, including the mouthwatering Bread for All Seasons and the feisty Breads of the Southwest. Her Bible features simple, basic breads, such as White Mountain Bread, French Bread, and an Old-Fashioned 100 Percent Whole-Wheat Bread, as well as fancier breads such as Brown Rice Bread with Dutch Crunch Topping and a tangy Anadama Bread with Tillamook Cheddar Cheese. Not forgotten are scones, biscuits, pizzas, croissants, waffles, muffins--and even coffee cakes. As can be expected from such a hefty, all-encompassing volume, many breads demand the skills of agile and able bakers. Crescia al Formaggio, an aesthetically pleasing savory cheese bread, requires scrupulous time-keeping and copious amounts of elbow grease and patience. Of course, the rewards are high. Happily, many other loaves can be whipped up in a bread machine, and are equally satisfying. An Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Bread using Irish oats makes everything good with the world with its rich, nutty texture. Hensperger's sweet treats are also a delight--the Blueberry Gingerbread works wonders with vanilla ice cream, and won't take up your whole day slaving over a hot stove.

Although The Bread Bible would have benefited from color photographs to tease the taste buds, Hensperger's latest ode to bread will still prove invaluable for both new and seasoned bakers. --Naomi Gesinger

I really enjoy this cookbook; I cook the banana bread recipe from this every time I get 3 mashy bananas. I keep running through different recipes, and I've still not gotten a bread disaster. I tend to mostly use my bread machine's dough cycle, and form the bread myself, but since I got a higher quality bread machine, the recipes are also working fabulously in the various machine cycles. I highly recommend this book; lack of illustrations seem to bother some, but it's not really been an issue for me.

4 out of 5 stars A Bible for the Home, but not for the Seminary.......2004-01-17

This is the first of two books by the same name `The Bread Bible' written by Beth Hensperger and published by Chronicle Books in 1999. The second book with this title, written by Rose Levy Beranbaum and published by W. W. Norton & Company in 2003 I have reviewed earlier, before I discovered this title.

This occurrence is actually a rare good fortune, as it gives us a chance to compare two essays of exactly the same subject and pick that effort which does the better job on the subject. Both authors appear to have ample credentials for the chuzpah required to write a book with such a pretentious title. Ms. Hensperger has written five other books on bread baking and Ms. Beranbaum has written three other large, well received books on baking, two of which are also `bibles' on their topics.

Ms. Hensperger gives us 473 pages of text and 21 pages of index at $32.50 while Ms. Beranbaum gives us 608 pages of text and 21 pages of index for $35.00. Ms. Hensperger gives us 25 very useful introductory pages on equipment, flour, and general techniques. Ms. Beranbaum gives us 62 pages of what I considered to be a model of culinary writing on the ten essential steps to making bread. This is the first sign that Ms. Beranbaum is aiming at a much more sophisticated audience than Ms. Hensperger.

Ms. Hensperger gives us no color photographs or diagrams illustrating techniques. The few line drawings seem to be primarily for decoration. Ms. Beranbaum's book provides four sections of full color photographs of the baked products essayed in the book. She also provides many pages of expertly done line drawings illustrating baking techniques such as the `business letter fold', layering foccacia with herbs, and making sticky buns. Other line drawings give very good pictures of baking equipment.

Ms. Hensperger's Table of Contents with the name of each and every recipe spelled out is much more to my taste than Ms. Beranbaum's simple chapter headings. Fitting Ms. Hensperger's home baker orientation, she has two whole chapters devoted to using a food processor and a bread machine for bread recipes. Ms. Beranbaum discusses bread machines, finds useful things they can do, but ultimately keeps them on the sidelines due to their small capacity and the tendency of most to heat the dough, causing a too fast rise in the dough for optimum taste. Rose is certainly not a Luddite, as she makes extensive use of the KitchenAid stand mixer and its big brother the Hobart stand mixer. I prefer to not use bread machines. If you are comfortable with them, Ms. Hensperger may have more to offer you.

It is no surprise that both authors deal with brioche. Ms. Hensperger includes four recipes for brioche and three variations. All are embedded in a chapter on egg breads including Challah. Ms. Beranbaum devotes a whole chapter of 45 pages to brioche, including Challah, cinnamon buns, panettone, and a provocatively named `stud muffin'. Lots of variations on each recipe are given. As with all recipes, Ms. Beranbaum's approach is much more detailed and precise. The most obvious sign is that all of Rose's recipes give ingredients in both volume and weight in imperial and metric units. This feature alone would swing my choice in favor of Ms. Beranbaum's work. Another example of Rose's precision is that she specifies the high gluten brands of all-purpose flour rather than simple `all-purpose flour. I am constantly amazed at the variety in recipes for brioche. Like every other authoritative recipe, both recommend an overnight rise, but the two recipes start the sponge in much different ways, with Ms. Beranbaum using a much more finicky approach, being very careful to avoid exposing the yeast in the sponge to salt than Ms. Hensperger. When separating the dough to be put into molds, Ms. Hensperger is unconcerned about differences in size. Ms. Beranbaum is not compulsive about same sizes, but does recommend a scale to achieve uniform amounts of dough in the molds.

Neither author oversimplifies her procedures, but Rose Beranbaum consistently gives a much more professional instruction and a deeper understanding about what is going on along the way. Both have an ample amount of passion and love for what they are doing. If you are a home baker and can find Ms. Hensperger's book at a good discount, you will not go wrong. If you are a baking hobbyist or even aspiring to being a professional baker, then Ms. Beranbaum's book is the one you want. Both are excellent. Ms. Beranbaum and her publishers seem to have invested much more energy, money, and precision into their volume.

Judging from other reviewers comments, some errors have been detected in this book. The same is true of Ms Beranbaum's book. This issue is a wash and I have stopped holding a small number of minor errors like that against cookbooks.

          3 out of 5 stars A little one sided.......2004-04-15

I wanted a book that discussed the ethics behind captive animals, however this book was decidedly one sided. While I generally agree with animal rights ethics, I wanted to learn more about the reasons TO keep animals captive, and this book did not furnish that side. In fact, I felt most of the submitting authors displayed a hostile tendancy. It is a decent book on the history of zoos, as long as you're only interested in seeing this subject from one perspective. It left me feeling defensive.

5 out of 5 stars Good material on history and future of zoos.......1999-06-25

This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the history and future of zoos and animal parks, as well as offering an assessment of present day facilities. Pro and con essays on a variety of topics related to zoo management, aquisition of animals and captive breeding provide both sides of the controversial issue of maintaining animals in captivity. Slight bias toward the view of zoos as the only viable future situation for wildlife but still offers critical analysis of

          issues involved.

This book is great and a MUST HAVE for serious and casual or would be collectors of Candy Containers. I have been collecting glass Candy Containers for many years and have just begun collecting the plastic containers. This is the BEST book on the subject. It is well organized and provides just enough background on the history of candy containers. It must have taken thousands of hours to compile such an extensive list and take all those pictures... Such great detail! The price evaluations are surprisingly accurate. Even though there is a disclaimer that value is what it is worth to you and the hobby is ment for fun. What a book. I bought 6 of 'em for gifts.

I'm so happy a book finally came out on this, not so old, collecting of plastic candy containers. I can now see so many that I do not have, that will make the "hunting" so much more exciting. The book title says it all, "Modern Candy Containers & novelties", because there are few older ones listed. All in all, I think this is a great book and do recommend it to any one that enjoys collecting fun "stuff"!

              Book Description

A forest garden is a food-producing garden, based on the model of a natural woodland or forest. It is made up of fruit and nut trees, fruit bushes, perennial vegetables and herbs. It can be tailored to fit any space, from a tiny urban back yard to a large rural garden.
A close copy of a natural ecosystem, it is perhaps the most ecologically friendly way of gardening open to us.
It is also a low-maintenance way of gardening. Once established there is none of the digging, sowing, planting out and hoeing of the conventional kitchen garden. The main task is picking up the produce!
This highly practical, yet inspiring book gives you everything you need to know in order to create a beautiful and productive forest garden,

              including:
              * Basic principles
              * Layout
              * How to choose plants
              * Details of over one hundred plants, from apples to mushrooms
              * the most comprehensive account of perennial and self-seeding vegetables in print
              * A step-by-step guide to creating your garden
              * Full details of an example garden, and pictures of many more
Forest gardening is an important element of permaculture. This book explains in detail permaculture design for temperate climates and contains much of interest for anybody wanting to introduce sustainable practices into their garden.

              Customer Reviews:

              3 out of 5 stars Title misleading.......2007-01-14

First I want to say that I very much agree with the approach to gardening presented in Mr. Whitefield's book. That said the title is very misleading. The reason for my 3 star rating. The book has little to do with actual "Forest Gardening". Multi-layer planting or poly culture, more accurately describes his approach. He does use these terms periodically to describe this way of gardening. Early on Whitefield makes a brief comment on the idea that if you don't have much room, you might try a "forest garden" in a container. Perhaps in England they have forests in a pot, but in the part of the U.S. where I live people maybe have several acres of actual forest to work with. He also tells the reader to be aware of full day shade caused by nearby buildings. Important information if your forest exists between two multi-story buildings. But that is not a concern in a forest. This book does offer some constructive information for those who have a city lot or small yard to work with and wish to have a fruit tree or two, some berry bushes, combined with a vegetable garden. What I did learn from this book is that for gardening in a real forest a fair amount of the fruit trees and plants suggest by Whitefield probably won't work due to the light condition created by the forest canopy. Also the reader should know the hardiness of some of his suggestions are defined in general terms like, "can withstand cold temperatures". He does mention ability to withstand frost relating to some plants. One will need to check with other sources for plant hardiness, as cold for someone in England may be different than for someone living in Wisconsin. If you are actually wanting to garden in a forest you would might be better off researching native plants that may already be in your local forest environment, do some experimenting with plants to check their light requirements, or checking with your state university. They may have information on agri-forestry or other alternative approaches for food production in a forest environment. Bottom line... If you are planning for your back yard you might consider this book as a good starting place. It will give you some good information and designs for a progressive way to produce your own food. If you are planning to co-existing in a forest setting, in a way that allows you to produce a variety of fruits and vegetables I don't believe this book is your best place for ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Clear explanations of basic concepts........2007-01-10

I bought this book for my wife who is an avid gardener and who has been studying permaculture for several years. We wanted a good book that would explain basic concepts of "forest gardens" that we have only begun to study. She loves the book, and while traveling recently, she read the first two chapters to me. I found the author's explanations to be very clear and concise. He presented some ideas which got me thinking differently about the way we develop and use our small yard. We are anxious to try out many of the ideas he presented. Overall, we are both very happy with this book, and it well fulfilled our expectations. If there is one downside to the book at all, it is the fact that he bases his explanations on the circumstances and climate of Great Britain. We would love it if he had his forest garden here in our area, and mentioned plants specific to our area. That makes it a bit of a challenge to interpret the specific methods to our own climate, but the general principles are useful anywhere. Yes, we highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a 'forest garden blueprint' for us all........2006-11-10

If you are looking for a book that will inspire you to make a forest / woodland garden then this book has everything and more.

When the realisation of low-maintenance gardening can produce such an incredible variety of produce, in such a sustainable way, it defies belief that this way of gardening is not implemented all over the world.

Absolute value for money, and, as the principals of forest garden can be easily applied to the smallest garden space, there is no excuse for anybody not to give it a go.

This book will give you all the help and guidance you need to make this vision a reality and the plants will just keep on giving. Truly inspirational.

              4 out of 5 stars I have this book.......2006-06-22

4 out of 5 stars Practical and Informative... A great concept for self-sustainability!.......2006-04-28

I happened upon this book while learning more about permaculture. As we are preparing to plant a private orchard, this book was invaluable - it altered our approach entirely! Being quite mindful of the ecology on our rural property, we are quite pleased that we can provide natural, healthy food for our family without altering the ecosystem that surrounds us. As a matter of fact, we are now living more harmoniously with the wildlife.

This book provided the framework for us to devise an effective plan for our property in the Mid-Atlantic region although it was written based upon UK geography.

I would have gladly given 5 stars to this book if it had included more color photography and detailed illustrations. Nonetheless, it's a valuable addition to your self-sustaining library.

"Dr. Mary Allison has written a fascinating book about her nearly forty years as a medical missionary in the Arabian Gulf. . . . Dr. Mary in Arabia is a valuable addition to the writings of foreigners about the Middle East. . . . Mary Allison provides detailed information on many aspects of life in the region to readers with few contemporary native sources at their disposal. . . . The fact that she is a complicated and interesting human being adds to the pleasure of reading what she has to say about her profession and the places where she practiced it." --Middle East Journal Until fairly recently, Islamic women rarely received professional health care, since few women doctors had ever practiced in Arabia and their culture forbade them from consulting male doctors. Not surprisingly, Dr. Mary Bruins Allison faced an overwhelming demand when she arrived in Kuwait in 1934 as a medical missionary of the Reformed Church of America. Over the next forty years, "Dr. Mary" treated thousands of women and children, faithfully performing the duties that seemed required of her as a Christian--to heal the sick and seek converts. These memoirs record a fascinating life. Dr. Allison briefly describes her upbringing and her professional training at Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. She then focuses on her experiences in Kuwait, where women of all classes, including royalty, flocked to her care. In addition to describing many of her cases, Dr. Allison paints a richly detailed picture of life in Kuwait both before and after the discovery of oil transformed the country. Her recollections include invaluable details of women's lives in the Middle East during the early and mid-twentieth century. They add a valuable chapter to the story of modern medicine, to the largely unsuccessful efforts of the Christian church to win converts in the Middle East, and to the opportunities and limitations that faced American women of the period. Dr. Allison also worked briefly in Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and India, and she includes material on each country. The introduction situates her experiences in the context of Middle Eastern and medical developments of the period.

This book tells the story of Dr. Mary Allison, medical missionary in the Arabian Gulf from 1935-1975. Dr. Allison, or Dr. Mary, as she was known in the Gulf, was the daughter of a minister and decided at an early age that she wanted to be a missionary. Since women at that time were not commonly called to the pulpit, she trained as an M.D., a general practitioner, and applied to work for a missionary society as soon as she completed her training. She was sent to Kuwait in 1934, where she served in a mission hospital until 1964, with brief sojourns away during World War when she worked in the US and India. Following her time in Kuwait, she also served in Bahrain and Oman until her retirement in 1975. This book represents her personal memoirs of her years of training and service, stretching from her early childhood through retirement. The book includes a small collection of black and white photographs documenting scenes of daily life in Kuwait and Oman, as well as the clinics where Dr. Allison worked and her patients and helpers.

Dr. Allison comes across as being very modest about her training and skills. She claimed she was of average ability, and many of the anecdotes described in the book tell of her medical failures, although some highlight her successes as well. She possessed an unwavering faith in her particular version of Christianity, heavily influenced by her Dutch heritage. She felt that even if she wasn?t the best doctor in the world, her very presence and willingness to serve gave life and hope to her patients. Given the low level of development in the Gulf at the time and the lack of access to quality medical care, she was able to save hundreds, if not thousands of lives, through her work. As for saving souls, she describes how she only knew of one or two Muslims during her entire 40 years in the Gulf who had converted to Christianity, and seemed to have trouble understanding why more were not attracted to her faith by the kinds of work the mission hospital was offering.

The documentation that Allison provides of mission life in the Gulf during the first part of the Twentieth Century is invaluable. Allison was in the middle of all the changes that came to pass as the oil money began to flow. When she first arrived, she learned to survive and work through the desert summer heat without AC. Her patients came to her with trachoma, tuberculosis, and infected feet from stepping on needles. Then oil company men came from the West, and she even ended up marrying one herself. She describes how the oil money brought AC, electric lights, cars, and schools. If she could re-visit Kuwait today, she would find very little trachoma or infected feet. Instead, there is diabetes, heart disease, and car accidents, the scourge of the Gulf which ensures that polygamy will be a common practice for all of the foreseeable future. Although she left the region before all of these changes came to pass, she could already see them coming.

Anyone who has spent time living in the Gulf will recognize that many traditions have changed very little since the time when Allison first arrived. The Arabs still drink their coffee with cardamom, and a visitor must take 3 cups, swirling the last to signal satiation. Many women are still not free to pursue health care on their own, and medical personnel will not touch a woman, even in an emergency, without a husband?s permission. Blood for transfusions is ever in great need, especially because of the innumerable car accidents, but people don?t die anymore for lack of blood donations because enough ex-pats are around to keep a steady blood supply, and even some Arabs are now willing to donate blood. There is still a dearth of nurses from the Gulf, but the shortage is no longer due to lack of proper education for girls. It turns out that Gulf Arabs just don?t like nursing as a career, so they still import the vast majority of their nurses from India and the Philippines.

Although the information in the book is fascinating in itself, the book could really have used quite a bit more editing. There are a number of places where Dr. Allison repeats the same anecdotes, and she occasionally even confuses the location where she met a particular patient, sometimes saying it was in Kuwait and later in Bahrain, for instance. All in all, though, the book is well worth reading for anyone with an interest in the Gulf, especially those considering taking a medical posting in a Gulf country.
