Book Description
When a magistrate rules Harlan Westover's death a suicide, something smells fishy. Amidst a sea of unanswered questions, the clever Mrs. Jeffries wants to get to the bottom of it-and make sure someone doesn't stage another "suicide"...
Customer Reviews:
Another Mrs. Jeffries winner........2005-12-24
I truly enjoy this series, and the biggest part of that is the liking that I have for the characters. The staff at Upper Edmonton Gardens are truly wonderful, and I think of them as old friends by this time. In this mystery Mrs. Jeffries and her crew are sussing out an apparent suicide. Their Inspector Witherspoon and themselves all think that it wasn't a suicide, but a carefully plotted murder. As they are all digging further they uncover all kind of unsavory things, such as marital discord, fraud and yes, murder. This is a wonderful series with truly believable characters. A Victorian cozy series that is worth reading!
charming, upbeat British police procedural cozy.......2003-04-12
His peers admire him; his subordinates emulate him; His superiors think that he is the perfect policeman in Scotland Yard. Very few people have any inkling that his servants, who adore him, use their connections and their wits to help Inspector Witherspoon solve his homicide cases. The housekeeper, Mrs. Jeffries uses guile and flattery to subtly direct the investigation. Aside from helping their employer, his servants like working behind the scenes to see justice done and know they had a part in making it happen.
Mr. Westover's death was originally ruled a suicide but Inspector Witherspoon's superior wants him to take another look at the case because the victim's landlady knows he was not the suicidal type. When the inspector begins his own investigation, he discovers that the victim was in a locked room with the key outside the door. He also learns that he was very angry just before he was shot and it was had something to do with work. Using information subtly given to him by Mrs. Jefferies he begins to get an inkling as to who committed the murder.
MRS. JEFFRIES PLEADS HER CASE is a charming, upbeat British police procedural cozy. Readers might guess early on why Westover was killed but they won't be able to deduce who the perpetrator is because many of the suspects had means and opportunity to perform the deed. Emily Brightwell, the author of this long running series, has written another fine work that fans Of British cosies will just love.

Book Description
Sanctuary: fantasy's grimiest, nastiest, ugliest city. Shadowspawn: fantasy's most notorious thief. Shadowspawn's Guide to Sanctuary: the indispensable Thieves' World handbook. In this weighty tome, you'll find an overview of the city's neighborhoods and surrounding areas, descriptions of important locations and key sites, advice for aspiring Thieves' World Game Masters, and full details on the principle characters of both eras, including such favorites as Lythande, Tempus, Ischade, and of course Shadowspawn himself. The book also expands the rules options for the Thieves' World Player's Manual with new backgrounds, cultures, prestige classes, and the mysterious and powerful Ur-words. Shadowspawn's Guide to Sanctuary gives you everything you need to run roleplaying games in this classic fantasy city.

Serviceable Guide.......2006-12-28
This is one of several manuals or modules available for the latest attempt at a Thieves' World RPG (Chaosium took the first swing back in 1981). Other volumes from this go-around include a player's handbook, a gazetteer, and an introductory adventure. Endorsed by Lynn Abbey, who was heavily involved throughout Green Ronin's development of the RPG material, this book gives a significant amount of background details on the city of Sanctuary, the core setting for the game.
What I actually found most valuable were the two lengthy sections on prominent NPCs from both the "classic" era (during the original run of the dozen or so anthologies in the '80s and '90s) and from the current period that was introduced in a fairly recent relaunch novel and a couple of ensuing story collections. There's plenty of stuff to be found on old favorites like Lythande, Jubal, Enas Yorl, Lalo, Shadowspawn, and even the vile Tempus, not to mention all of the assorted enemies such as Ischade and Roxanne. Biographies of the characters in the new age are also provided, although so far only Cauvin has really stood out.
I have a bit of a quibble with the map of Sanctuary, which seems dramatically out of scale. Note that if you are yearning for information about anything outside of the city, you must pick up the gazetteer, because this book does deliver what it promises: stuff about Sanctuary, and not much else. So if you really must know about Ranke and Ilsig and such, the gazetteer is a must-have (it is also packed with historical backgrounds on all of Sanctuary's neighbors).
I probably had bloated expectations for this book, but for whatever reason, I ended up mildly disappointed. I would rate it at 3.5 out of 5. Important note for RPG-types: as far as gaming goes, this setting is very heavily skewed toward fighters and thieves, unsurprisingly; clerics and mages would have a rough time of it. And it's definitely both a low-tech and low-magic world, which is true to the source material.
Overall, a good resource for character backgrounds and some commentary on the city.

Unbeknownst to the general public, two alien races, the Plith and the Anktianra, wage secret battles in an endless war for world domination and the absolute control of temporal portals that were created due to Man's indiscretion. Every war needs soldiers. In this war the people of the Earth are ripe for the picking. In the late 21st century, the Plith and the Anktianra actively recruit members from society's underbelly, the Shadowspawn, to become unwitting soldiers in the battle for Earth's past, present and future. Who will be recruited to fight in this war? Will the unwitting recruits, the pawns of aliens with domination on their minds, be remembered by history as heroes, or villains? Only time will tell.

Not worth the money.......2005-10-19
I am an avid reader and have managed to get through many mediocer books in my time but I couldn't get beyond the first chapter of this one. The list of problems I had with this book is too long to type out here but if you're looking to spend the money I'd suggest doing it elsewhere.
born out of darkness.......2003-04-26
I have read this book and found it to be very interesting, it was very hard for me to put down.
I hope this author has more of the same in the works, as they hold your attention

to live and die in thieves world.......1997-08-16
I was just a lad when I first read the Thieves World series. Even then I knew that these books were special. The thing I like most about these books is the way that the point of view changes with the characters. The authors have this carefully nurtured rivalry amongst thier pet charactors Which makes these books anything but predictable.
I remember reading a little inscription in one of the Thieves World novels which says it all, "you write your first thieves world novel for money. you write the next one for revenge."
If you enjoy fantasy and you can manage to get your hands on a copy of a Thieves World novel you will not be disapointed. The Thieves World novels had it all long before Dragon Lance oozed onto the book shelves

"Avoiding sugar is the easiest, safest, and most permanent way to stay slim" is the bold promise nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman makes in her book Get the Sugar Out. Gittleman, who also authored Beyond Pritikin, gives the hard facts about why refined sugar contributes to weight gain, mood swings, weak immunity, diabetes, and more. Low-fat diets, the book claims, frequently let people down, because manufactured fat-free foods often contain more sugar than their full-fat counterparts!
Don't be fooled, though: ridding your diet of sugar will not be an easy task. The 501 tips provided in the book may seem rather daunting at times. Luckily, Gittleman doesn't expect you to incorporate all of them into your life. She notes, "Even if you incorporate only one-tenth of the tips in this book, you're sure to reduce the sugar in your diet and change your life in a positive and noticeable way." So even if you find it's too difficult to give up your diet sodas, you can still improve your health by learning all the names sugar hides under (including tongue twisters such as xylitol, sorghum syrup, mannitol, and maltodextrin) and avoiding products that contain them. Some of Gittleman's suggestions, though, are not only simple, but fun. For example, you can substitute frozen grapes, raspberries, and blueberries for hard candy. This easy-to-read book even has 50 delicious recipes (how about Peanut Butter Muffins or "Gone Nutty" Frozen Bananas?) and a week's menu to get you started. So if you're ready to get going on "a satisfying, high-energy, low-sugar regimen," this just may be the book for you. --Jenny Brown
Book Description
This timely book is aimed at the millions of people whose low-fat diets aren't providing the health benefits and weight loss they expect. The reason? The "healthy" promise of low-fat products masks the excessively high levels of cornstarch, sucrose, and other forms of sugar. More than 50 recipes make Get the Sugar Out a great guide to low-sugar adaptations of favorite meals, snacks, drinks and desserts.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2007-08-09
I think that this book was very helpful. The background info about the dangers of sugar/sugar substitute consumption and the diseases/conditions related to sugar/sugar substitutes was concise and informative. Personally, I am not going to make use of all 501 suggestions, but with so many ideas, I found a bunch that are going to help me kick the sugar habit (hopefully!).
A very nice feature was that among the 501 ideas, there were also a bunch of recipes that look really good, and they're (for the most part) healthy.
I would recommend this book!
Concise and practical.......2007-04-01
A concise and practical handbook that is a real eye-opener, especially as it exposes sources of hidden sugars in the diet.
best on the topic.......2007-03-07
There are many fine books to tell you about sugar in your diet. This book however is the most concise with over 500 practical, easy to read and remember suggestions to really help you to get the sugar out of your life. It gets right to work with what it tells you. Particularly excellent for someone who already knows a lot about the dangers of sugar but wants to have practical , intelligent and doable suggestions you can begin following immediately after you read them. Excellent simple recipes which are not complicated are also included. A must have . A must read for anyone who is seriously wants to get the sugar out of their lives especially anyone with conditions that require sugar be eliminated to gain or regain their health e.g. obesity, diabetes, etc. Great!
very practical.......2007-03-01
What a great, practical book for anyone and everyone looking to get sugar out of their lives.

It's a good book with many tips that shows you sources of hidden sugar.
Book Description
The pleasures and adventures of cruising under sail are amazingly affordable, say Lin and Larry Pardey. But to keep your dream on budget, financially, emotionally, and timewise, you have to decide - are you a cruiser or a consumer? In this book, a logical successor to their Self Sufficient Sailor and Capable Cruiser, they discuss topics ranging from making your getaway plans to finding a truly affordable boat, keeping your outfitting costs and maintenance time in control, then learning to feel confident as you cruise farther ahead. Their chart of the gear considered necessary by many shoreside experts, compared to that carried by several cost-conscious cruisers, will give you a convenient checklist to gauge whether you are buying true necessities or overloading your budget and boat with high-tech items that can break down and steal your sense of confidence offshore. Chapters on getting the most from your cruising funds, the attributes of successful long-term voyag! ers, how to upgrade your boat using your own hands, plus answers to the ten questions most frequently asked by potential cruisers - all will help you prepare to explore under sail.
Customer Reviews:
A classic, and mandatory reading........2006-07-28
Everything by the Pardeys is good. This book cannot be too highly recommended. Still, even the Pardey's budget(at least for their super swanky boats, albiet minimalist) might seem unachievable for many. I'd get Anne Hill "Voyaging on a Small Income" and Jerome FitzGerald's "Sea-Steading" to fill out the bill.
The Cost Conscious Cruiser.......2005-09-15
This is very useful for preparing a boat (and crew) for a cruise. Helped put many things in perspective...especially what you can do without. Excellent ideas!
It Helped Me Select Gear for My Sailboat.......2004-02-28
I bought my first sailboat, a Catalina 30, in 7/02. The boat did not have much equipment. This book helped me in the selection of the appropriate level of equipment for the type of sailing I intended. In particular this book helped me avoid spending more than I would otherwise have spent and feel good about it. As an example, I followed the advice to avoid buying the very expensive "offshore" foul weather gear. However, I still spent much more that the Purdey's would say is necessary. The book helped me make better spending decisions. The writing is clear. The tables are helpful. The stories from their vast experience taught me a lot. The book is less helpful to someone who is looking to use their sailboat for just racing or day sailing.
These people have done their homework.......2000-09-15
I don't have a small boat, in fact mine is 38 feet long. But I definitely agree with the majority of what I read in this book. Not only that, I enjoyed reading stuff like the pros and cons of tiller vs wheel even though I would never give up my wheel (first because it came with the boat, second because I don't like using tillers.) The Pardey's have hooked me and I plan to read more of their books. In fact I gave my sailing partner their Care and Feeding of the offshore Sailor book and she complained because I kept reading it. Good solid advise with a good bit of humor. Their ultra simple life style appeals to me, but I don't plan to duplicate it. On the other hand, they don't seem to expect people to - but they do remind potential voyagers that taking care of a cruising boat/home is not easy when you get away from stateside facilities. Good read, good info and logical presentation.
Get out there..........2000-06-21
This and all the other Pardey books are the core curriculum for the particular cult of sailors that believe that the most important thing in sailing is to be small and self sufficient. After all, the whole point of sailing is to use the inexhaustible wind to drive you along. So why clutter up your already cramped boat with gadgets that (1) you don't need in the first place and (2) you can't repair when they let you down? Their advice that, if you can't fix it then it probably shouldn't be on the boat, is some of the sagest crusing wisdom around. And the fact that they have covered the globe in safety and comfort without an auxiliary engine is inspirational. For those who poo poo this, listen to the Pardey's spin you some tales of some of the hundreds of heartbroken sailors they have seen, up to their elbows in a diesel engine, missing out on paradise because of engine failure. Too often these unfortunates can't sail their boat well enough to do without the engine (in other words they can't get it out of the marina) and therefore are stuck in a hell of their own making. And it isn't just engines: it's radios, electronic systems, electric anchor windlasses, roller furling, refrigerators, all the doodads we are told we can't sail without. Nonsense. The Pardey's will innoculate you against such tragedy.

A waste.......2003-10-11
I thought this would be a book I couldn't live without. Thankfully, I didn't pay a lot for it, but I NEVER refer to it. Yes, it's got nice big pix of the usual trays, but the vast majority of CC trays?...you won't find 'em here. Precious little content, unlike the other CC trays book out there, which blows this one out of the water.
If you can pick this one up for a handful of dollars or less, buy it. But don't expect much for your money.

Book Description
Ever since 1897, when the first "Delicious and Refreshing" glasses of Coca-Cola were poured, Coca-Cola trays have become magnificent pieces of advertising art. The evolution of American popular culture is found in their images. From ribbons-and-lace girls of the late Victorian era through Roaring Twenties flappers, World War II war brides, and the working women of today, Coca-Cola has called upon images of glamour girls and girls-next-door to sell Coke. Warm family scenes, baseball, and children at play are also favorite tray illustrations. A price guide is included. Through the 260 color photos, including several new to this edition, you will come to understand the charm and appeal of these trays. The price guide is also newly revised to reflect today's market.

Coca-Cola Trays by William MacClintock.......2000-04-19
This book contains some wonderful photography and estimates for trays in perfect mint condition. I was let down by the fact that not more trays were represented, and that no apparent scale of grading used trays is given. Also, I was disappointed that not more information was given on how to tell a really old tray from a reproduction. "If you like it buy it," is just not enough of an answer for a serious collector.
A must for Coca-Cola tray collectors.......1998-05-03
I recently purchased and read this book. The photography was excellent. There was only one page where the description of the trays were inverted. The layout was done very well. Any and all Coca-Cola memorabilia collectors should get and read this book and keep it around when they go on their many tray hunts. Enjoy!!!

Best Seed Info Book made.......2007-04-27
I have the previous edition to this book and have been using it for years and years. I had a greenhouse and have been starting and growing flowers for 14 years. In my Or town, I am known as the Flower Lady and I can thank this book. It is one of those hard to find DOWN TO EARTH EASY TO READ INFO books. It tells you if the seed is difficult to germinate, and sometimes those seeds you can buy in packets in the stores, you couldn't start no matter what unless you owned a nursery and had all the equipment. Like I like to grow and sell perennials as they bring in good money and many of the perennials are very easy to grow from seed, but some of them are very hard, almost impossible, so before I start with a flower seed, I always look in this book. It is a life saver for me. I thin it also has veggie's ??? I can't remember and I can't find my copy but I"m digging. I alreay know most of what is in it, but this is the book for you if you want to grow flowers from seed and be very successful, but always remember the most important ingredient in growing flowers is goods soil. NOthing much worthwhile except a few grow in average to poor soil. I heavily ammended mine before I began. Good luck and your kids would love to grow too :)
Superb Manual for all Plants. Buy It!.......2007-01-30
`The New Seed Starters Handbook' by Nancy Bubel is a serious and superior manual on virtually all aspects of starting all different types of plants from seed. As with books on cooking, there are hundreds of books on gardening which are designed to go directly to the budget book pile and give relatively small value for the space they take up on your bookshelf. There are several obvious symptoms that this book is not to be dismissed as a lightweight. The first is the fact that Rodale Press publishes it, which may be the only publishing imprimatur which has a serious commitment to its particular speciality of organic gardening. The second is that this is a second edition of an already successful book. Unfortunately, a third easy sign of a book's quality is missing, as there is no thumbnail sketch of the author's biography and credentials.
Fortunately, a quick browse of this book quickly reveals that Ms. Bubel has got serious game when it comes to instructing us on how to raise plants from seed. I'm especially fond of the opening to her introduction where she says her first attempts were not immediately successful, setting a realistic tone that even with the best instruction, growing plants from seed is not easy. That is not to say it can't be simple! I'm often enchanted by the difference in the cooking world between `easy' and `simple'. While making a great soup is not easy, if you break it down into its various steps, it is really rather simple, if you have the patience and the time to carry out each step with care and love (that is, close attention to what you are doing). Ms. Bubel cuts no corners in covering all the details, but lays everything out with an affection for her subject which invariably draws one in to wanting to run right out and build some cold frames.
The author addresses all types of seed started plants, including vegetables, herbs, `domestic' flowers, wildflowers, trees and shrubs. However, I suspect her first love is in growing vegetables, as that seems to come first and occupies the most space. But, in most cases, what works for your carrots will probably also work well for your marigolds, with only a few variations.
My fondest feelings for the book arise when I see Ms. Bubel going far beyond the average suburban garden plants of tomatoes, zucchini, and sweet peppers. Her dictionary of planting techniques even includes entries for the relatively exotic artichoke, peanut, and salsify. This brings me to the most appealing reason for growing your own vegetables. There are many species that are simply not available in even the biggest megamart. This includes even relatively easy to grow varieties of salad greens. And, even if you do find a good `summer mix', it is probably outrageously expensive. The second most appealing thing about growing your own, even if you limit yourself to a very few species, is the fact that homegrown vegetables can taste so incredibly better than store-bought stuff. I was pleasantly surprised when I cooked with some Italian parsley which had grown up from self-seeding from the previous year, and the difference in taste between it and the local fare was simply amazing.
The book is amply stocked with great appendices on sources. The only annoyance is that this is a pre-internet publication, but no Internet jocky worth their salt will have any problem locating the sites for, fore example, `Johnny's Seeds' or `Charlie's Greenhouse Supplies'.
Indispensable for serious start from seed gardeners.......2006-01-28
Nancy has researched and presented in simple and easy to use format the critical information needed for successful early season indoor gardening. If you want to save a ton of money and have great bedding plants you grow yourself, this book will give you invaluable assistance. I like her "down to earth" approach and clear explanations of her methods. If you're a serious gardener, you will seriously love this book!
Great All-Around Gardening Book.......2005-05-07
This book is an introduction and reference for people who want to grow plants from seeds. The book is organized into 5 main sections: starting seeds indoors, preparing outdoor beds to receive transplants or seeds, detailed instructions for growing individual vegetables from seed, saving seeds, and record keeping and exchanging seeds. Bubel integrates the results of scientific studies and her own growing experience in her advice to novice gardeners. In striving for completeness, she even includes a chapter with folk wisdom about planting, noting which moon phases are thought to be best for planting and which are not. The book is amply illustrated with black-and-white photographs and drawings. End material includes a glossary, a bibliography, a list of suggested readings, lists of seed and equipment suppliers, and an index.
Although the book is written for people with very limited gardening experience, it is so full of information that even experienced gardeners are bound to learn something through reading it. Bubel's approach to gardening very much follows organic practices. The section on individual vegetables is a very valuable reference, with its details on when to plant, when to fertilize and how much to use of what, and when and where to transplant in the garden. Interspersed with the text are charts summarizing information such as germination rates for different vegetable seeds at different soil temperatures, or viability of vegetable seeds over varying storage times. The sections on preparing the soil for planting or transplanting and on saving seeds at the end of the season round out the book quite well, making this an excellent general gardening book, and not just a book about starting seeds.
Vegetable Gardening in Northern Climates.......2003-02-09
This book should have a subtitle: Vegetable Gardening in Northern Climates. The author assumes that every reader has snowy winters and hot summers, and that every reader is a vegetable gardener. If I just described you, then without question, you should buy this book! I live in a cool coastal climate of California, where temperatures are generally between 50-65, regardless of season. I'm not trying to grow vegetables, simply trying to replace the weeds in my yard with no-watering-required wildflowers, herbs, etc. If this describes you, then I will say that the book is still good for basic seed-starting tips, fertilizing, etc., but that at least 70% of the book will not apply. FYI, here are a few of the things I've learned in the past several months: Birds eat seedlings/baby plants. Really. I've sat with coffee in hand watching them. Bird netting must be raised up at least six inches and stretched taught to keep them away, but then it is dangerous to wildlife. I took it out after I found a young possum caught in it, and had to cut him loose. He had badly wounded himself trying to get free. I've replaced it with basic clear plastic from the hardware store, the kind we californians all have around the house for flood control. So far, it is working great.

Customer Reviews:
great book.......2007-04-17
I had never read Mari Sandoz so I can't compare this to her other books. The writing style is unique and pleasant. It is a very interesting, and unfortunately sad story about Indian life on the great plains. The book seems very well researched and therefore more interesting to read since it is about history. The Indians suffered strategically from a lack of organization, but their whole life style was about independence and in fact a much more pure form of democracy in selecting and de-selecting their leaders. In reading the story with regard to the lies and deceipt of the white men it reminded me that world politics and war is no different today than then. Crazy Horse had attributes that leaders should aspire to, he wanted to help his people and he was not vain about himself as leader. In the end he was tricked into surrender by his own people.
I thought it was one of the best books of Indian life and history that I have read.
An Authenticated Portrait.......2006-12-13
Little is known about Crazy Horse in comparison to other legendary chiefs, warriors and heroes due to the quiet-spoken and solitude-seeking nature he possessed. Indeed, Crazy Horse was considered "strange" due to standing true to his ideals and who he really was, instead of the conventional ways of others no matter how traditional. Born of lighter hair and skin, young Curly stood out as different from the beginning of his days. Most humble and purely strong and good-hearted, Crazy Horse grew to be the truest and most brilliant leader of the Lakotas. Self-sacrificing even to the bitter end, Crazy Horse earned his place of honor as a hero to be respected.
Combining interview information of Eleanor Hinman with survivors who knew Crazy Horse, with Mari Sandoz's meticulous research, gives "Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of The Oglalas" clout in accuracy of detail and fact in the day and time of Crazy Horse. I very highly recommend this book.
Excellent book..........2006-08-09
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and couldn't recommend it more. If you are a Native American history buff, or have any interest at all in the so-called Indian wars of the Great Plains, this book is a must-read. It is written in the vernacular of a Native American who speaks English tolerably well, and I believe this adds a great deal of character to the writing. The story of Crazy Horse's life is a sad one filled with the mistrust and back-stabbing deeds of his own people, along with the well known deeds committed by the American settlers and soldiers. Crazy Horse's ultimate downfall was aided by the restraining hands of his own people, as foretold by his vision. A sad ending to his life indeed, but Sandoz's re-telling provides a fascinating work of history. One word of advice to the reader: A much better understanding of the events that occur in this book can be had by "pre-reading" a good, concise history such as Indian Wars by Utley and Washburn.
A Novel or Biography?.......2005-04-14
The strange man of the Lakotas made very little contact with the "white man" and remains a mysterious character of native American culture. Not much is known about him, his birth, his death, his burial.
Sandoz attempts to document as much history is known about this man, and she puts it in the form of a novel. It is easy to read and entertaining. Yet it includes historical facts, events and characters. While it is difficult to pen a biography about someone who so little is known about, Sandoz documents all that is known about him in this book. Many of the facts were taken from interviews with people who knew him and lived with him. Those people are all long gone. The only comprehensive memory of Crazy Horse is this book.
A Beautiful and Compelling Biography.......2004-05-21
This is a highly unique biography and is a well-deserved classic in the world of literature. Sandoz did not write the standard Native American story from the point of view of the outsider (that is, the white conquerors), but created a book that feels as if it was written by the Indians from their own world view. Sandoz had the great advantage, in the 1930s, of interviewing still-living oldtimers who really knew Crazy Horse, and her combination of first-hand Indian accounts and meticulously well-crafted prose makes for an extremely compelling story of the last years of Indian freedom. In fact, this is not so much a biography of Crazy Horse, but a much larger story of the Lakota (Sioux) people in which he is the central character. The book does not include much historical detail, as that would be the white man's method of writing, so for such information on late Sioux history you would have to look elsewhere (such as *Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee* by Dee Brown).
However, we do get a book full of beautiful and poetic prose such as "there was a star with a long white tail to speak of good things," and consistent use of Indian terminology such as "burning cup" for whiskey or "soldier chief" for army officers. This style of writing does make the reading of this book stiff and long-winded in places, but Sandoz must be commended for her very unique and moving methods. In the end, Crazy Horse himself comes across as a troubled loner among his people, a bit manic-depressive but a strong leader and warrior, and he remains as dark and mysterious to us as he was to his friends and enemies. And as usual for Native American histories from this period, the end of the story gives us the depressing loss of the people's freedom and the noble but hopeless efforts of a great leader to save his people. Concerning the special 50th anniversary edition of the book, you can ignore the rather sycophantic introduction by Stephen B. Oates, but the stunning cover painting by Ed Lindlof is almost worth the price of admission alone. [~doomsdayer520~]

Book Description
It does a man no good to be free until he learns how to live.
These were the words of Amos Fortune, born the son of a king of the At-mun-shi tribe in Africa. When Amos was only fifteen years old, he was captured by slave traders and brought to Massachusetts, where he was sold at auction. Although his freedom had been taken, Amos never lost his dignity and courage. He dreamed of being free and of buying the freedom of his closest friends. By the time he was sixty years old, Amos Fortune began to see those dreams come true. Amos Fortune, Free Man is a Newbery Award winner that is based on a true story.

Excellent vocabulary resource!.......2007-07-27
I've used Amos Fortune Free Man as a powerful tool in building vocabulary and dictionary usage skills for my fifth graders. It is not an easy read, but does open young eyes to the way of life in colonial America. The book develops the character as they read, and I point that out to my students. Advanced readers told me that they thought it was boring at first but got better as they read. The concept that fiction and historical fiction books often develop in that way came through clearer by having them read the book than by my merely telling them. They learned not to give up on a book after reading just a few pages. I highly recommend it for gifted readers.
Understanding Freedom.......2007-03-19
Do you forget how vital freedom is in everyday life? Elizabeth Yates, the author of Amos Fortune: Free Man, informs her readers of how important freedom is. Atamun, the protagonist, was a representation for all of those Africans who struggled up the steep road, full of obstacles, to freedom. He stood for a large mistreated group of Africans who were deprived of their freedom and forced to work against their will.
The central theme of freedom began with the concept of slavery. Atamun, who represents all the Africans who were once free in their own continent, was a prince in Africa until he was captured. All along the perilous and excruciating voyage, Atamun wished for freedom. He wanted to be back in Africa. Africa was a place where he did not need to earn freedom. However, the pain of the voyage was a constant reminder that snickered, "You cannot escape without receiving more pain and suffering."
At last, the voyage ended and Atamun's trials had just begun. He refused to listen to the embarrassing words that echoed from the mouths of those who wished to force him deeper still into the pit of slavery. The Europeans tried to do so by selling Atamun to other Europeans so he would have to work for them. In addition, the Europeans who wanted to buy him insulted Atamun by laughing at his looks and inability to speak English. Atamun was finally bought by a Quaker. He was re-named Amos, but I have chosen to call him Atamun because Atamun was his original African name. The pain of being owned weakened Atamun physically and mentally. Like most slaves, Atamun was re-sold to someone else. Fortunately, he was freed quickly. The burden of being a slave was removed but was quickly replaced with new hardships.
Bigotry and injustice seeped into Atamun's life at different times like poison because his lack of liberty was due to his color. Once, Atamun needed land. He had earned enough money to free his own family. Now, he wanted to expand their lives by giving them land. There was plenty of land, which Atamun discovered in a spacious settlement. The constable of that settlement, however, stood against him. Thankfully, the constable finally agreed. Atamun was lent a large plot of land.
Having journeyed far in his life and gotten past two obstacles, Atamun was proud of himself. However, Atamun did not have the power to do certain things. Atamun reached other obstacles, such as want for land of his own and lack of business. Atamun received business once his reputation as a tanner grew, but Atamun's color caused limitations. At that time, Atamun was unable to sit anywhere other than the back pew at church or to be paid the proper amount of money. He, however, did raise enough money to buy his own plot of land. Atamun reached a final obstacle. What was he going to do about others who were kept down by slavery? Atamun decided to help others by funding the school for Africans in his settlement. Atamun had fulfilled the dream of the slave. Atamun was truly free in his heart, mind, and spirit!
Freedom is a blessing that makes everyone's life better, but most people do not consider its magnitude every day because they have liberty in abundance. Elizabeth Yates did an excellent job of informing you that freedom is essential for a peaceful life and how horrible life can be without it.
What A Great Book To Read .......2006-11-30
Amos Fortune Free Man is one of the best books I have ever read. Amos Fortune is a biography,So he really lived. I personally love to read biographies whether it's sports or history. Amos was from an African tribe, but slave traders came over to Africa. Amos even though he lives in a different country is trying to save his people. This book can make you wonder why something happened or did not happen. This book was so good that I had to read it for an second time. All the biography lovers out there need to read this book. Also this book can get a little boring sometimes, but it's still a good book!If I get another chance to read this book I definitely will.
More Boring Than I Thought.......2006-11-01
As with most other kids I thought this book was not worth writing. While reading the description it sounded fantasticly exciting. In the beginning it actually sounded like an interesting piece of history. By the end it was one of the most boring books I've ever read. Now I have come to realize that just because a book wins the Newbery Medal does not mean that it is a good book. With 1,000 good books one book can be published because it is pollitically correct or is spewed out by a good author. I have no doubts about Elizabeth Yates but I think that Amos Fortune is a book about a man that had a good life, but one that was not nessicarily worth writing about.
Not so boring........2006-04-14
Quite contrary to other peoples opinions on this book I found it engaging rather than boring. The main character (Amos) is an example good of patience. It is well written and an excellent book.
