A Thriller Cozy?.......2007-09-20
My first "Mrs. Pollifax" novel. With little buildup, the reader is in Syria with Mrs. Pollifax, a CIA biddy, and her sidekick. Their mission is to find and rescue an American girl who has saved a planeload of passengers and then disappeared. They have various adventures until they land in an archeological dig. This was an odd book, and it finally dawned on me that there's minimum violence, in spite of one murder, off screen, and that it's actually a cozy. If Mrs. Pollifax did a bit of knitting and had a cat, the genre would be complete. Instead we have sheep and an unlikely rescue. In spite of the oddball, bloodless scenarios and capers, I rather enjoyed the escapade, and came to like Mrs. Pollifax who seems to be a rather clever old bat.
Mrs Pollifax unveiled.......2007-02-22
Mrs Pollifax is someone I discovered by accident a couple of years ago and since then I have been trying to collect the series in which she figures. Delightful is what comes into my mind to describe the books. A new location each time, a new adventure, and absolutely plausible where simple common sense rules the day. In this one, she is off to Africa with barely a clue in her hand - just a mission to locate a girl who did a heroic deed in disarming hijackers and then completely disappears. Mrs P finds her - going from clue to clue, and in the process averts an assassination. The stories never stale, and can be re-read and the enchantment still holds.
In Strange Places Where There Is Danger........2006-06-26
Emily Pollifax has gone through a lot of dangerous adventures since Dorothy Gilman created her best known character in the '70s. She was known as a super sleuth as a CIA (?) secret agent on assignments in unusual places. Some of the fifteen or so titles called her amazing, elusive, pursued, unexpect, and innocent. She survived many death-defying situations like being locked overnight in a medieval Swiss Castle.
For a Garden Club member from New Brunswick, New Jersey, she found herself in many tight spots, like her espionage assignament in Morrocco, Turkey, in the 'Whirling Dervish.' This one is similar as she balks an airplane terrorist. You can always find her in foreign locales while her husband carries on at home. I can't choose which is my favorite, but Mrs. Gilman has been a most prolific writer and creator of Mrs. Pollifax.
Don't miss out on Dorothy Gilman.......2005-10-26
Fun fun fun. I highly recommend all of Dorothy Gilman's Mrs. Pollifax books just for the pure escapist, fun of reading about an "older" woman who knows how to take care of herself!
Patty Hearst syndrome.......2003-07-02
There is a question whether an American woman is alive or dead in Syria. The CIA summons Emily Pollifax and another free-lance hand, John Sebastian Farrell. They travel to Syria. It seems that rumors in the bazaar indicate that Amanda Pym, the person concerned, is still alive after having been kidnapped six weeks earlier. She had foiled some hijackers and entered a wrong car directly after the event when being interviewed by news organizations.
When Mrs. Pollifax and Farrell arrives in Damascus and checks into the hotel, Mrs. Pollifax finds a note. She had been advised by her superior, Carstairs, that help could be expected. The note directs themn to go to the Citadel. Things really heat up as Farrell gets taken into police custory and Mrs. Pollifax, having been struck in the head with something, makes her way to an archaeological dig, a caravansary, to find the next clue. Traveling the following day in a borrowed land rover in search of the shepherd who may have seen Amanda Pym, Mrs. Pollifax and her guide, Joe Fleming, enter an area of the desert where snipers are boing trained. They find a burned American passport that may have belonged to Amada Pym.
Farrell arrives at the camp reporting that he had been held by a nefarious group, not the police at all, who seemed to know everything about Amanda Pym. Determining to view the encampment at night, to try to see what the shepherd saw, they look through the binoculars and see Amanda Pym among the people in camouflage garb who were supposed to be snipers in training. Farrell comes to know more about Amanda Pym by piecing together pieces of her journal found in the vicinity of the burned passport. The means Mrs. Pollifax, Farrell, and Joe Fleming employ to separate Amanda Pym from the others I care not to disclose. I will say that the solution involves the aid of sheep and golden hamsters. The working out of the details both in Syria and elsewhere proves to be extremely exciting and delightful from the point of view of the reader.

Book Description
Phthor is the sequel to Chthon, less intricately structured and less complicated in plot, but still quite dark and ugly in theme and detail. Rather than flashbacks and flashforwards, it has a Y outline, with the stem the initial story and the ends alternate futures, neither of which is acceptable to Aton's son Arlo. Arlo has his own encounter with a Minionette, and naturally destruction is upon him and all with whom he associates. Write/editor Charles Platt was so impressed with the chthonic setting that he wrote two additional sequels, Plasm and Soma, which are even darker and grimmer.
Customer Reviews:
Classic Piers Anthony.......2003-03-07
Phthor is certainly one of Anthony's better works, written during his more prolific period, and serving as a reminder that there's much more to Piers Anthony than Xanth. While Chthon is the preferable book in the series (there are 4, the first two written by Mr. Anthony himself, the latter two written by Charles Platt), Phthor holds its own as a good sequel. The subject matter is dark, and often frank (in the case of many of the main characters' perennial nudity), and presents many interesting themes throughout.
Worth the time, especially if you've read (and enjoyed) Chthon.
Phthor is a very good book.......1998-06-12
I really liked this book. The main character, Arlo, was pretty cool and the minionettes were also intriguing. Their inverse emotion telepathy was confusing at first, but once I got into the book, I understood it. This is a very good book. Read it, you'll enjoy it.

The Better Brain Book, by David Perlmutter, MD, FACN
Loss of memory and acuity is not a natural part of aging, and celebrated neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, FACN, shows readers how easy it is to regain and maintain clarity.
Most people can see the signs in their lives-they can't remember where they put their keys; they forget who they're calling mid-dial; shopping lists are the only things that give them an indication of why they've entered a store. However, these are not normal signs of aging. They are the symptoms of a distressed brain, one on its way to more serious conditions that can leave the individual unable to care for him- or herself later in life.
The Better Brain Book provides all the tools any reader will need for rejuvenating the mind, whether they've become forgetful and less able to focus at work, or are trying to help a loved one who has suffered a serious illness. This helpful guide helps you to:
discover hidden brain toxins in your medicine cabinet, your household products, and the food you eat;
learn how to bring back clarity and mental vigor; and
find out what your doctor won't tell you about preventing and treating stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other neurological conditions.
In addition, The Better Brain Book offers a unique three-tiered food and supplement program that helps heal damage and restore youthful sharpness and memory, as well as specific exercises for keeping the mind alert. (You'll never lose your keys again!)

Compares to Ornish .......2007-06-09
This book clearly presents an alternative resolution for memory loss and dimentia. It reflects a breakthrough in this area of medicine that rivals the insights into heart disease that Dr Ornish provided.
Excellent book for increasing health and vitality.......2007-02-12
This is not an overall review, however, I want to let everyone know how the Tier 2 supplements protocol affected my eyesight. It took me a couple of weeks to notice that I was no longer wearing my glasses all the time. The effect was dramatic (only 2 weeks!). My eyesight is improved, and I am using another book containing vision exercises to improve it even more. I do not find eyesight mentioned anywhere in the book, but this is one of the benifits I am reaping.

Words You Never Expected to Hear from an MD!.......2006-06-23
If I were diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer's, I'd head straight to the Perlmutter Health Center. But if that were the case, it might be because I had neither read nor followed the instructions found in this wonderful book.
This is information you won't hear from your doctor: How diet, supplements, exercise and more will influence and can decrease your risk for Alzheimer's and other major diseases of the brain; What the drugs widely used for symptomatic relief may create in other areas of the body.
Research from medical journals published in 2005 and 2006 confirms much of what Dr. Perlmutter discusses here. The latest research adds information to his method but denies none of it.
If you care about your brain's health, this book is a "must read." Get it, study it, and start using the information for your good health!

Book Description
Saké, the Japanese alcoholic beverage derived from rice, is quickly becoming one of the "coolest" international drinks after almost 2,000 years of popularity in Japan. The current nationwide rise of saké bars and saké-influenced drinks such as the sakétini hold testament to its newly gained popularity.
This newfound buzz has people more curious than ever about this traditional Japanese drink. Did you know that there are thousands of varieties of saké or that saké has 400 flavor components to wine's 200? Also, did you know that most of finest saké's are supposed to be served chilled? Or that saké has no sulphites and that the premium grades won't give you a hangover? Also, in Japan, saké is rarely served with sushi; ironic, as for most Americans saké and sushi go hand-in-hand.
Rocky Aoki, the famed restaurateur and founder of the Benihana franchise restaurants and Haru, explores this relatively unknown drink, supplying a full background to this still-mysterious beverage. Aoki examines how the rice is grown and brewed, the background and history of saké in Japanese culture, the differences between the variety of styles of saké, what types of food should be eaten with what types of saké, and where one can go to purchase or order bottles of saké.
With the same zest and appeal he has brought to his phenomenally successful Benihana chain, which entertainingly introduced the world to Japanese cuisine, Aoki, with this book, will likewise extend the same appeal to the joy of saké.
Also included in the book is Rocky's own saké guide, brands he has selected that are commonly found in the United States as well as other more specialized brands that can be purchased on the Web. They are rated as to quality, grade and price, and accompanied by suggested meals with which they are complementary.
Book Description
In praise of author's previous book:
"I couldn't think of a single question that wasn't answered helpfully by this excellent book." -Elizabeth Marshall Thomas
"Here's a book your cat would have written for you. Anyone who has a cat, wants a cat or wants to know a cat should read this loving, lucid, comprehensive handbook. It's a gem." -Sy Montgomery
In 1985, silently as fog on little cat feet, cats padded past dogs as America's most popular domestic companion animal. While cat owners love their purring, fuzzy friends, cats can have another, rather unpleasant, side. Some cats spray; defecate and urinate on carpets, in corners, in shoes, on visitors' leather jackets; shred upholstery; chomp houseplants; ambush guests; caterwaul at all hours; and scratch and bite children, sometimes causing serious injuries and infections.
Skeptics will claim that it's impossible to train a cat. Happily, Wendy Christensen knows they're wrong. True, cats are intelligent, adaptable, patient, independent, stubborn, observant, and extremely quick learners. But they're also remarkably self-interested and quick to exploit a good deal. Outwitting a cat means persuading the cat that what you want is also what he wants.
Whatever your immediate, urgent specific cat problem-aggression, bullying, clinginess, refusal to eat-you'll find answers here. Wendy Christensen can tell you what works-and what doesn't. What to do right away-and what never to do. She'll share tips and cat-and-owner-tested secrets to reversing, redirecting, and solving-for good-even the thorniest behavior problems. And she'll tell you how to head off future problems, simply by understanding how your cat thinks.
Customer Reviews:
Must have book for anyone who lives with kitties!.......2007-04-07
I have lived with kitties my entire adult life and love them dearly. I also have many "how to" kitty books. This is by far the best. Interesting, fun, and comprehensive. What more can we ask? Buy it! You need this book!
Finally found "the" book!.......2006-05-18
I have been looking for the cat complement to Dr. Fogel's wonderful "The Dog's Mind" ("The Cat's Mind" isn't it!). This book fits the bill. For someone who knows virtually nothing about cats and did not intend to have one, the introduction to the physical and mental nature of felines is indespensible. The behaviors covered are exactly what is needed as well. The author is obviously a "cat person" and gets a little biased, but the info is still solid. And it is so well-written that I had a hard time putting it down!
Whether or not you agree with the title ("Outwitting" is a series, BTW, and authors had to kinda retrofit their writing to fit the theme - Outwitting Dogs is another excellent entry in the series), this book holds nothing but useful information.
Enjoyable read!.......2006-02-24
This book was very informative and entertaing at the same time. I highly recommend!
Wonderful, and very helpful........2005-12-15
This is a wonderful and practical book about feline behavior and why your cat is the way it is. It lays it out straight to those of us who couldn't figure out why our cat would never listen when told "No!" and never come when she is called. They're cats, not dogs, not babies... they are independent-minded and headstrong and no amount of punishing, bribing or begging will get the cat to do exactly what you say.
The book is full of practical information about how to deal with "naughtiness", how to read your cat's body and vocal language, and how to be a better cat parent. It's also decidedly funny and even tongue-in-cheek at times ("Mewphy's Law #11: If you pester a cat long enough, you will get scratched. Mewphy's Law #12: You will deserve it.") It's packed with information about the history of cats and the physiology of cats, but the really pertinent information is the psychology and behavioral aspects of cats, something that most cat-care books don't give a lot of information on.
This book is really excellent, particularly if you're new to owning cats (as I am) and need a little bit of guidance in figuring out their personality.
Good book - not accurate title.......2005-10-20
This book is interesting and easy to read, and I definitely learned from it, despite the fact that I'm no beginner with cats.
It provides a good basics, from a history of the domestic cat, to an overview of a cats body structure, to tips on making your house more "cat friendly." I was just a bit dissapointed in the "outwitting" suggestions though.
Although there are a few ideas that I may try, many were either obvious (to outwit a cat who eats magazines, put the magazines in a drawer), gross (to outwit a cat who eats off your plate, just let them have a few bites and they'll lose interest) or impractical (to outwit a cat jumping on furniture that you don't want them to, set up motion-activated audio recordings of you yelling.)
I would still recommend this book to anyone with an interest in learning about cat behavior and/or looking for ideas on improving their cat household. It's one of the best overall cat books I've read, but the title is just a little bit misleading.

Peter D'Amato has been raising carnivorous plants for three decades, and his nursery, California Carnivores, houses the world's largest collection of flesh-eating flora. There's not much D'Amato doesn't know about growing these oddballs of the plant world, and he imparts his expertise gracefully and with humor in The Savage Garden, which is aimed at curious gardeners who want to grow carnivorous plants both indoors and out. From the ever-fascinating Venus flytrap to the aquatic bladderwort and the rather extravagantly sexual-looking pitcher plant, these exotic plants have a reputation for being difficult to grow, but D'Amato proves otherwise. The necessary water and soil chemistry, proper lighting, and propagation tips are discussed thoroughly along with descriptions and growing tips for many species in each of 11 plant families.
If plants can have personalities, these do--or at least appear to in the hundreds of witty photographs and colored illustrations that show them both at their hungriest and at their most innocuous. This is a stunningly comprehensive guide that will inspire and fascinate even the most squeamish gardener. -- Barrie Trinkle

the savage garden.......2007-10-01
Zeer goed boek,
Awesome read!.......2007-09-26
I have read many reviews about this book, and now that I have gotten this book, I have to agree that it is packed full of information! I was not able to keep carnivorous plants alive before I read this book, and now they are bright and beautiful! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in starting a carnivorous plant collection!
An excellent book for anyone ranging from novice to experienced CP growers.......2007-07-24
The book is well written and well organized. It presents a wealth of information, and is an indispensable part of anyone's library interested in carnivorous plants.
Perfect!!!.......2007-04-11
If you are going to buy one book to help you out with growing your carnivorus plants then this is it. It is the number one best reference book to cultivating, caring, learning and just about anything else you want to know about carnivorous plants. This book has been my bible and I never make any changes to my Carnivorous plant arrangments without consulting this book first. This is the king of all Carnivorous plant books. It has even made me want to take a trip from Phoenix, Arizona all the way to Sebastopol, California where this authors Carnivorous plant nursery is located. Not to mention that Peter D'Amato's nursery is supposed to be the largest Carnivorous Plant nursery in the US. If you are looking for a book then stop right now and choose this one. You'll be glad you did.
Simply an amazing book and a great value! .......2007-01-03
This book is worth its weight in gold, plain and simple. It is an absolutely wonderful collection of history, humor, scientific and horticultural information about virtually all known types of carnivorous plants. While not geared toward the die hard biologist, it is packed with enough detailed information about the plants, presented in clear and elegant fashion, that it will satisfy readers from almost any background.
In this book you will find, without a doubt, some of the best information for growing these wonderful and increasingly rare plants. Whether you're a novice grower or have a modest collection, there is something for you in this book. This book covers it all, from growing medium to green houses, from terrariums to watering techniques, it's all there in clear, concise form and expertly organized.
This book is literally a steal at its current price and I would easily pay twice as much for it. There is a reason that this book has gotten, with one exception at this time, five star ratings from everyone that reviewed it. It's the same reason that anyone and everyone who seriously grows carnivorous plants already owns a copy. Do yourself and your plants a favor and buy this book.
