Book Description
In one of the finest novels yet in Tapplys long-running series, Nervous Water explores the previously hidden past of his much beloved character, Boston attorney Brady Coyne. Contacted by an aged relative with whom hed long lost touch, Brady agrees to help his Uncle Moze with a sensitive family matter. Having received a diagnosis of terminal cancer, Moze is looking to mend fences with his only daughter. But the daughter seems to have simply disappeared, leaving no clues or hints as to her whereabouts. As Brady tackles the seemingly impossible task of finding his cousina case that looks less and less like a simple missing person caseit becomes clear that whatever is going on now is related to a dark, undiscussed episode in his familys past: the brutal, still unsolved murder of another of Bradys uncles.

Nervous Water.......2006-12-25
"Nervous Water" is the 21st Brady Coyne novel by William G. Tapply whom I feel is one of the finest mystery writers working today. Brady is called by his Uncle Moze in Maine to try to find his daughter Cassie who has apparently disappeared. Cassie is actually Moze's niece, but he and his wife had raised Cassie as their own. Brady begins to search for his cousin and finds that most people who are close to her are not cooperative. Her husband Richard Hurley is not helpful to Brady and he wonders if Hurley knew something of her disappearance. When Cassie's former lover is killed, Brady knows that someone will stop at nothing to keep Cassie's whereabouts a secret. He even wonders if Cassie is still alive. When Moze suffers a heart attack, Brady knows that he needs to find Cassie. There is also a suplot in which Brady's girlfriend, Evie, is acting strangely. I gave this novel a 5 star because it is a fast paced and very suspenseful read. The only thing I felt was strange about the plot was the fact that Brady had not visited his uncle in 30 years, but I overlooked that and highly recommend this book.
Another page turner by William Tapply.......2006-06-15
William Tapply has written another winner in his Brady Coyne series. All books will stand on their own. I won't give away the plot. (Read the Amazon summary and other reviewers)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and read it in two sittings. Lots of twists and turns, there are some surprises and some---well you could guess whodunit. Great book for beach, poolside or plane.
First Brady Coyne novel I have read.......2006-03-22
I enjoyed this novel-an interesting and easy read. Storyline was intriging, plot twists convincing, and character development about as deep as a book of this length can provide. I could best describe the book as Greg IIles-lite.
A Dense Family Mystery That Doesn't Quite Make Sense.......2006-02-05
Brady becomes reacquainted with is favorite uncle from Maine, whom he hasn't seen or heard from in 30 years. Already you can see one problem with this book. That's an unlikely set of circumstances.
If you get past that one, Mr. Tapply throws you another unlikely event, Brady's uncle's daughter won't talk to her father and has gone missing. Uncle Moze wants Brady to be sure Cassie is all right and to get her to call Moze. Even if Brady can succeed in finding her, will she be willing to call?
Brady finds himself drawn to do something, especially after Moze has a heart attack. Brady isn't sure that Moze will survive without seeing Cassie.
Arriving at Cassie's house, Brady finds a family that seems to be pretending that nothing's wrong . . . but something clearly is.
As Brady checks out the alternatives by visiting with her family and friends, he seems stymied when a lead suddenly appears. From there the story takes many unexpected turns that will keep you turning the pages.
If you can buy into the story of Brady's connection to Moze and Cassie's relationship with Moze, you have a four or five star book on your hand. There are marvelous scenes of lobstering and fishing that make you want to head for Maine. The title theme of "nervous water" is nicely developed in the book. The mystery itself isn't all that mysterious, but it'll do.
There's an edgy backdrop of tension between Evie and Brady that adds a little personal touch to the story without advancing the plot very much.
After reading the book, I found myself wishing that Mr. Tapply had written this book as a case involving non-relatives of Brady's. I think the story would have worked better.
A glimpse into Brady's Coyne family.......2006-01-02
His uncle who he has not seen in thirty years contacts Boston lawyer Brady Coyne. It seems his Uncle Moze had a falling out with his daughter Cassandra and he has not seen her in a year and a half. Recently finding out that he has heart problems, Moze wants to make amends before it it is too late. The problem is that Cassie cannot be found. Moze wants Brady's help in finding Cassie. Is it a missing person or is it murder?
This is another fine entry in this underrated mystery series. NERVOUS WATER gives us a glimpse into Brady's family on his mother's side. There are a few skeletons rattling around on the old family tree. The story was well plotted and very engaging. In addition to the missing person case, there are a few sub plotlines that are interesting and keep the story moving forward. Brady is not the most dynamic of characters, he is a little to laid-back for that, but the character dynamic keep the pages turning....Brady and his girlfriend, Brady and his secretary, Brady and his dog. Tappley did a great job in setting the scene in small-lakeside town Maine.

Book Description
If Julia Child were to have written a cookbook for new moms, this would be it. The Baby Bistro Cookbook speaks to a growing population of parents who want the same fresh and healthy, great-tasting dishes for their children as they have come to expect for themselves. Not only will these recipes satisfy little ones, but they are delicious enough for the entire family. Unlike previously published baby and toddler cookbooks that either appear outdated or offer unsavory health food alternatives, The Baby Bistro Cookbook demonstrates how easy and satisfying it can be to cook for little ones with thoughtfully conceived and smartly written recipes. The book is chock-full of helpful sidebars and timesaving tips, such as: -Substitutions for children with food allergies -Directions for preparing an entire week's supply of dishes that can be easily refrigerated or frozen -Lists of the best finger foods and snacks to have on hand -Hints on what foods to pack when traveling with children -Pediatrician-approved information on adapting recipes to suit your child's age and tastes

Mixed Bag, But I Use It Regularly.......2007-06-18
THE BABY BISTRO COOKBOOK is not my favorite cookbook, but it is one that I have come back to again and again. When a very picky relative (meat and starch but no vegetables or spices) came to visit, THE BABY BISTRO COOKBOOK was perfect. If you have never considered cooking for your child, this is a great book to add to your shelf.
However, I could not get by with THE BABY BISTRO COOKBOOK as my only toddler cookbook. In my view, the strengths of THE BABY BISTRO COOKBOOK are in its treatment of some basics.
RECIPES WE LOVE: Baked Sweet Potato Sticks, Zucchini Coins, Vegetarian Black Beans and Rice, Korean Barbecue, Cheddar Chicken and Broccoli Casserole, Cornmeal Catfish (though we spice ours up more), Gingersnaps, Coconut Macaroons, Horchata
RECIPES WE LIKE: Apple Cider-Glazed Carrots, Risotto (though I had to add lots more liquid), No-Peanut Sesame Noodles, Shepherd's Pie, Curried Chicken, Salmon and Polenta (okay but have not liked it enough to repeat it)
NOT SO GREAT: Lemon and Rice Soup, Pumpkin Ravioli (will try this again)
RECIPES THAT DID NOT WORK FOR US AT ALL: Kiwi-Lime Agua Fresca (first recipe I tried, and it was wretched; there is no sweetener, so this is a very sour and tart drink); Steamed Japanese Egg Custard
NOTE ABOUT ALLERGIES: This is not a great cookbook if your child is sensitive to dairy or wheat. I was not able to do much with the book until my baby started to outgrow his dairy sensitivity.
ONE MORE NOTE: She recommends eating organic foods, but her cooking times seem to be based on white rice. If you are enough of a health nut to want brown rice, you'll need to make adjustments.
Interesting Concept, Recipes don't work.......2007-06-04
This book has some great ideas and the overall concept is a good one, but the hype gets lost in the details. Many of the actual recipes, as others have reported, just don't work. The vanilla cupcakes are salty and rubbery, the chicken soup has no flavor, the blueberry muffins stick and aren't done at the prescribed time. It makes me wonder if anyone ever tested the recipes before they were published. Don't waste your money on this book - just modify recipes that you already like and you'll probably end up with better results.
Yummy for baby and us too!.......2007-05-18
I just got this cookbook and already I have made quite a few recipes from it. My daughter loves them, and her mom and dad do too. They are easy to follow and well thought out. I really like this cookbook.
Perfect for picky toddlers/husband.......2007-05-06
Good food that is easy to make, and doesn't require a trip to the store every time you want to make something. Many of my favorites, including the sesame noodles, peanut sesame noodles, mexican rice and black bean soup can be made with pantry ingredients. My 2 year old ate everything I have made from this book, without any bribes. My 1 year old loves the cheddar coins, and they are easy to make, even with two toddlers in the kitchen helping. She has lots of good ideas, and its food you actually want to eat. I recommend this book to all my friends who have kids, its great because you don't have to make separate food for your toddler.
one word - boring.......2007-04-07
Thanks but no thanks. I do not need a recipe for mashed potatoes or applesauce. If you want boring and basic, this cookbook is for you. But if you want new and exciting flavors for your baby to enjoy, find another baby cookbook.

Almost there.......2006-11-22
I bought this a few years ago, and it is obvious that a lot of thought, care, and love went into this cookbook. At first the thought of having all the pre-work menu-planning done for me sounded appealing. But once I tried to get into the schedule, I felt suffocated. I was incredibly stressed the first two weeks. I think the problem is that although we all like new ideas, most of the time I like the tried and true. You don't want a challenge EVERY night, and an unfamiliar recipe is always a challenge the first time. The thought of a year of this stress was just too much for me. It felt claustrophobic. Too much of a committment. Too micro-managed. Also, like some of the other reviewers, I got tired of the "cute" recipe names that didn't always tell me what the recipe was about (Pinata Pie; Contemporary Chicken). A cute name won't win over a picky child. What if I wasn't in the mood for "Rat-a-Tatouille?" But if I tried to delete those ingredients from the weekly shopping list, I wasn't sure if I was sabotaging another recipe that week that might depend on the same ingredient. As for the food, some of the dishes were--how should I put this?-- terrible. However, I did find some keepers: I loved Fools Gold (mashed sweet potatoes with carrots), and was surprised how much I enjoyed Impeccable Peppers (I would never have thought of pairing allspice with red bell peppers). My recommendation is try a week of these recipes a few times a year, then go back to your normal routine in between.
a FUN cookbook!.......2005-03-29
I love to cook and try new recipes. I've had this cookbook for awhile, but hadn't ever used it until recently. I've started following all the recipes and trying new things. My husband is being very adventurous too! I either half the recipes, or cook for leftovers (since there are only the 2 of us)I like how the grocery list is all laid out. Because of calories I spend a few minutes before shopping and eliminate the desert items from the grocery list. My husband I only eat one desert a week,(unless it's a fruit desert) we pick which one sounds the best and have fun with it. I have gotten him to eat artichoke hearts, spinach, and cabage... all things he said he has hated in the past! This book is a must for any family.
Love the concept, not the recipes.......2004-08-21
I pined over this cookbook for months before I finally got it, I loved the idea of having everything planned for me, including the shopping lists. The book is laid out great and the recipes have fun and interesting titles, and are not the 'same old thing' I had been cooking before.
BUT - I found that many of the recipes took too long to make and were too complicated for me, even though the steps are all arranged. Yes, it did take less than an hour as the authors suggest, but only barely. I don't have an hour to spend in the kitchen every night. Every week at least 1-2 meals were things that just didn't sound good to me, and I'm not picky. I tried a few other recipes that did sound good, and they were OK, but not great. A lot of the side dishes are too complicated for my taste, I'd rather spend time on one main dish and just put it with a salad and pasta. I don't have the time or patience to make my own salad dressing - why bother? And each menu includes a dessert which I didn't want. And the beauty of this cookbook (the shopping lists) is also its downfall - if you make any changes or try to take out anything the shopping list is almost useless. Plus there are some nights when I have classes and such that spending more than 15 minutes in the kitchen is not happening.
I am a person who hates to cook and can't stand anything that takes over 1/2 hr to make. I'll admit my standard are very high, and this didn't live up to them. On the other hand, I gave the cookbook to my mom, and she loves it, so I guess its just a matter of lifestyle.
Menu planning made easy.......2003-01-09
Sometimes the hardest part about cooking day after day is coming up with the menus. This has a year's worth of weekday menus and recipes, organized seasonally. (Also bound nicely! Why don't more publishers think about how a cookbook is used?) Complete with a shopping list for each week and balanced meals. My only complaint is it's hard to find a recipe you want to repeat because of the "cute" names. A minor flaw though.
Great concept, poor execution.......2002-06-06
The organization of this book is top-notch. A complete meal on each spread, the shopping list up front, the countdown of preparation steps... perfect. Now, if the recipes were good, it would be my one and only cookbook. I've made about 20 of the meals. Every one left something to be desired, and some were just plain bad. The authors use the phrase "season to taste" a lot, and they mean it. We're not just talking salt and pepper. I usually use more of the herbs and spices they do call for and add others of my own. I've also encountered obvious mistakes in several of the recipes. In their quest for a year's worth of different recipes, sometimes they get a little too wacky with the ingredient combos, too.

Once revered as semidivine beings and collaborators in the hard work of transporting goods and materials, Thailand's elephants have fallen on hard times. With the destruction of their forested habitats, a consequent nationwide ban on hardwood logging, and the decline of traditional agriculture in the rapidly urbanizing country, their numbers have declined from tens of thousands just a decade ago to only a few thousand today. Many of the surviving elephants have been put to work in traveling circuses or used for black-market labor, subject to overwork and all manner of abuse.
Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid, Russian expatriates who have been working together for more than 30 years, have a knack, writes art curator Mia Fineman, for "transforming the solemn rituals of high art into high comedy." It was with the utmost seriousness, however, that the two, on reading of the elephants' plight, traveled to Thailand and established the Thai Elephant Art School, through whose offices elephants create pop-art masterpieces with palette, brush, and trunk. (Elephants, it seems, have a well-known gift for the visual arts and, in the Thai case, adore the work of Vasily Kandinsky.) Sold to collectors on the world market, pachyderm-painted pieces generated $75,000 at a single early auction, the proceeds of which were used to establish and maintain sanctuaries throughout Thailand.
Illustrated with elephantine artwork and more than 100 photographs documenting Komar and Melamid's project, this book makes a wonderfully offbeat gift, and one of a very good cause. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
For centuries elephants in Thailand have been revered as a nationalsymbol, worshiped as living gods and employed as beasts of burden in the nation's thriving timber industry. But when logging was banned in Thailand in 1990, these noble animals fell on hard times. Reduced to performing tricks for tourists by day and illegal heavy labor by night, Thailand's elephants were exhausted, malnourished, and dying in alarming numbers.
Hearing of their plight, a pair of unlikely heroes came to the rescue, Wildly eccentric Russian emigre artists Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid devised a brilliant scheme: to create the world's first quadruped occupational retraining program-a network of art schools for unemployed elephants. Taking a cue from elephant trainers in a number of American zoos, Komar and Melamid taught the animals to hold brushes in their trunks and apply paint to canvas. And the results were astonishing: Not only did the elephants' paintings closely resemble the expansive gestural work of such Abstract Expressionist artists as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline, but the pachyderm painters also began to develop clearly distinct regional styles-lyrical and expressive in the northern Thai school, subtle and atmospheric in the east, dynamic and angst ridden in the central school.
Sanctioned by the World Wildlife Fund, the Asian Elephant Art and Conservation Project has been a remarkable success; paintings by some of the most talented elephant artists have been auctioned at Christie's for thousands of dollars, generating funds to provide proper care for the elephants and support for their trainers.
When Elephants Paint follows Komar and Melamid and their eclectic entourage through Thailand's lush jungles and steaming cities, describing the odd encounters and creative cajoling that helped turn this seemingly whimsical idea into a concrete, beneficial reality. Illustrated with more than 100 photographs, including actual elephant paintings, this riotously funny and provocative book offers a valuable lesson in wildlife conservation and startling revelations about the nature of art itself.

Interesting and Beautiful.......2006-03-28
This book has many pictures and covers the material well. My only disappointment was that it was written to appeal to a slightly younger audience than I had hoped. However, I do not regret my purchase. I would highly recommend this book.
Beautiful Book.......2006-02-19
This lovely book is important proof of the highly evolved state of consciousness in elephants -- mental and emotional. It has wonderful photos of actual paintings by elephants, and is written in an amusing and witty style. It is an inspiring read for anyone interested in animals, but I think also helps cross the gap between those who already attuned to animals and those who need to have their eyes opened to what animals are really like.
Dissapointing.......2001-03-03
Beautiful photography and interesting text, but I was interested in the actual art as painted by the elephants, but there is very little of that. Mostly pictures of jungles. If you like that you will like the book. If you want to see the acutual artwork you will be very dissapointed.

Eight Collectors Collecting.......2001-05-05
I have to start out by confessing that I bought this book for the pictures. I am fascinated by the photography of the grotesque, and Rosamond Purcell holds high rank in this rarified genre. She is noted both for her own original work and her recording (museum, collection, etc.) work. Her photography in "Finders, Keepers" is remarkable, strong carefully composed images with lush color. Just as notable is her reliance on natural light and the simplest of Nikon cameras and lenses.
The only part of the book I originally read was Purcell's Afterword. It is a delightful exposition on her romance with collectors and museums, revealing a thoughtful, philosophical professional with a strong creative sense. After that much reading I was satisfied, and the book took its place on my shelves with Purcell's other works, to be referred to when opportunities of my own appeared.
Having decided to review it, I discovered, to my embarrassment, that the book was actually about something. The text, far from being the filler that often appears in photographic volumes, turned out to be a series of gemlike studies of eight collectors of note, consisting of Peter the Great, Phillip Von Siebold, Willern Von Heurn, Eugen Dubois, Walter Rothschild, Agostino Scilla, Thomas Hawkins and Louis Agassiz . Some of these men are popularly famous and others are known only to other naturalists, but they are all interesting. Their collections, sometimes known only from fragments are breathtaking.
The author of these essays is Stephen Gould, paleontologist and occupant of the Alexander Agassiz Chair of Zoology and Curator at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology. Despite these rather awe inspiring credentials his style is delightfully accessible as he reveals each collector's life and passion to the reader. If you like paleontology, or natural history, or glances into the strange mind of the collector you will find this a refreshingly pleasant volume, providing an equal share of education and delight.
Lush, fascinating view of collecting and natural history.......1998-10-08
One of the most beautiful books I own, combining Purcell's precise and beautiful photographs with Gould's intelligent and accessible writing. Finders, Keepers combines the diversity of living things, history, scholarship and art in an immaculately designed and printed whole. Absolutely stunning from start to finish.
Book Description
Ideal for would-be growers who were always afraid of roses, as well as for gardeners who already grow these beautiful flowers and want to learn more. Over 400 beautiful color photographs and 40 watercolor paintings.
Customer Reviews:
Good information, lovely photographs, attractive layout.......2005-04-04
As someone who's just getting into gardening, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this book includes sections on topics like soil evaluation and composting in addition to the expected chapters on choosing, planting, and pruning roses. Another nice aspect is that the fertilization and pest control sections emphasize organic methods, but also list others if you need them. The layout is also attractive and makes the book a pleasure to read.
Finally, what I've been looking for!.......2001-05-24
My friends and family all know I'm crazy about growing roses and collecting rose books. I'm often asked for just one book that a beginner could use easily, yet still not outgrow as his experience and interest expand. I know a number of books that fill part of this need, but not all. Finally I have found one I can recommend without reservation. This book covers the range from modern roses to antiques, why to choose own root or grafted roses, how to handle diseases and pests, and how to prepare the soil. The general orientation is for organic methods, but he presents the information without being judgmental. You won't feel guilty if you spray your roses, but he'll tell you how to avoid it most of the time by choosing easy-care varieties well suited to your own climate. All this, and I haven't yet mentioned the beautiful photographs and helpful instructional drawings.
Excellent photos and sound advice!.......2001-03-30
What first attracted me to this book was it's gallery of roses, the extensive chapter that describes numerous roses. After reading it, I realized that rose growing is more accessible than I thought, and I am ready to plant. Five stars!

A True Modern Master of a Fading Art.......2003-03-02
Ms Covey's prints are obviously deeply personal. Whether light and humorous or more typically dark and mysterious these prints provide some small glimpse into the psyche of one of todays pre-eminent printmakers. This book shows the development of her unique style and tells of some of her primary influences, as well as her personal history. Ms Covey is one of a handful of artists still practicing the art of WOOD ENGRAVING, not to be confused with the more common woodblock prints. The subtle shading and delicate shapes Ms Covey achieves are well depicted in this text. The only drawback of this book is, it does not cover her more recent works. Check out this book and you'll definitely want to see what she's been up to since. (Personally I have two copies!!)
She's got everything she needs..........2000-02-26
Rosemary Feit Covey mixes her decadent sensibility and technical proficiency into wood engravings that are wonderful to see. Imagine the latest work covered in the book: a girl in socks buries her doll tenderly; her sister is nearby in the foreground, tied with enormous ropes to the tree. Two fairies run off through the forest towards the marshland as the full moon rises and the birds take flight. The book suffers from a slightly washed out look, but is otherwise competently done.

Book Description
Memoirs of an Italian Geek is a collection of stories that tell the ongoing tale of the childhood and adolescent escapades of a third generation Italian-American Geek as he deals with the tribulations of life, technology, and friendship throughout the last few decades of the twentieth century. Starting with his earliest memories of the golden years, before school began, and on through to his graduation from high school, the endless impact of his friends and family influences continue to keep our Geek in a constant state of change and often confused. Dealing with personal issues and other cataclysmic changes, our Geek learns that not everything can be prepared for, and sometimes the most meaningful changes occur without warning. Confronted with the challenges of academic achievements (or lack there of) and endless extracurricular chaos (usually inspired by girls) our Geek fights a constant battle between trying to stay afloat on the seas of trouble childhood and not drowning in a coming of age riptide. Memoirs of an Italian Geek is the tale of this journey through churning and often unfriendly waters.
