Book Description
A string of mysterious, gruesome deaths in the Shiprock area has attracted the attention of FBI agent Diane Lopez. She believes the killer is a vampirebut the only vampire she knows of is Lee Nez, a State Police officer who prefers his blood chilled from the refrigerator, not hot from someones neck. The victims all worked for a secret government lab, experimenting on a captured vampire. When the vampire, Stewart Tanner, broke free, he avenged himself on the doctors and technicians who had been torturing him. Now he is threatening US government officials, and his vampire abilities make him a nearly invulnerable assassin. If Lee and Diane cant stop Tanner, they will have to kill him, something Lee is reluctant to do. After all, Lee might be the next vampire in the lab.

Whether you believe or not!.......2007-03-13
Whether you believe in vampires or not,is not important in this enjoyable read. This was my first Thurlo novel and I enjoyed it. Although at times I thought it was too long, with no action, but I did enjoy the storyline and plot.(Have you ever read a novel and just wanted to find out what was going to happen? That was what it was like at times when I was reading this novel.) It is a simple, yet at times, complicated plot.... A man (Stewart Tanner) is being held and experimented on by a secret government organization because he appears to have a sensitivity to light, extraordinary healing powers and strength. The people who are holding him "seem" to believe he is a vampire or at least believe that there is something worth risking their lives for to find out. You aren't sure who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. Anyway, Mr. Tanner escapes during a power outage and goes on a murderous rampage to "payback" those that tormented him. Hawk (Leo Hawk aka Lee Nez aka half Navajo/half vampire) is on the case with his trusted partner and girlfriend (although no romance happened, with the exception of stolen glances) Diane Lopez. There are a few other surprises that I am not going to spoil for the reader, but I am interested enough to read another Thurlo novel.
Sink your teeth into this savory book.......2005-10-28
The Lee Nez novels featuring duh Lee Nez, who now calls himself in the present, Leo Hawk, has a continued quality of excellence. The Thurlos, as many others, have other series with other characters, but Lee Nez appealed more to me - see, he's a half-vampire - ravaged by a vampire, he goes to a medicine man who knows how to counteract the curse to let Lee be able to function in the daylight hours (with lots of sunblock) and to be able to eat and drink like normal - although he likes a good drink of calf blood now and then - He's a functioning vampire -
His partner, now turned to partner/girlfriend, is Diane Lopez - she knows his secret and partners with him very well.
Pale Death deals with a secret government experiment testing the healing properties of a real vampire - who in truth is tortured and is truly driven into a mad killing rage - you kind of see both sides to the vampire thing -
Also in this series, there is a lot of Indian lore, which is rich and based on earth and elements and dignity.
This series keeps getting better - a great read.
strong horror thriller .......2005-10-04
State police officer Leo Hawk, once known as Lee Nez, is a Navaho half vampire who frequently works with FBI agent Diane Lopez who knows what he is and cares about him anyway. They are called to a crime scene where three people are staked and bite marks are on their neck. They trace the works to a nearby top secret federal facility where vampire Stewart Tanner, a full fledged vampire was being held against his will.
Experiments were conducted on him that were painful and could be considered torture. Eventually he went insane and when he was able to escape he killed his captors and is now going after federal employees. Dianne and Lee are assigned to the case and Lee has the best chance of catching him even though he is only a half vampire and Tanner is stronger and faster than him. As the body count mounts, Lee knows he has to work faster to take Tanner down but it is difficult when he has to hold back his true nature because he is working with mortals that will use him to experiment on if they discover he is a half vampire.
Navaho culture is woven into the vampire legend and what results is a fantastic storyline that is creatively different than most vampire stories. Lee is a good man who protects mortals from the evil vampires that want to kill or turn humans. His sense of justice is strong and as a result he recognizes that there are good vampires in the world and he has no reason to go after them. PALE DEATH will appeal to horror and mystery fans as well as those who love to read tales that are refreshingly original.

Crime, punishment, and redemption -- in a comic book?!.......1998-04-12
This is an engrossing, adult story about the overthrow of a king. It is a perfect companion piece/sequel to Frank Miller's "Born Again" storyline, which followed Matt Murdock aka Daredevil as his world fell apart due to the machinations of the Kingpin of crime, Wilson Fisk. This time around, Daredevil seems to have crossed the line and is not so heroic as he once seemed. He wants revenge on the man who destroyed his life and he wants to regain the last few missing pieces of that life. He will stop at nothing to accomplish this; he compromises his ethics, manipulates people, and pursues his quarry with vicious determination. At times, it is tough to bear in mind that Daredevil is our protagonist, not the Kingpin. Wilson Fisk is humanized here to a degree not seen before. He is as vulnerable and desperate as Murdock was in "Born Again". My only complaint about the tale is that Daredevil's access to incriminating information and its use by law enforcement officials against the Kingpin seems at times hurried and not as detailed as it should have been. It should be ten times harder for Daredevil to expose and destroy the Kingpin than it was for Fisk to do it to Murdock simply because the Kingpin is more resourceful, protected, and powerful. All in all, though, a highly enjoyable read filled with crisp action and well-drawn characterizations.

Essential for everyone who takes prescription medication.......2006-08-04
In this modern era when pharmaceutical drugs are the main way that physicians treat illnesses and the average person routinely takes one or more prescription medications, it is essential that everyone learn the most important facts about their medications -- including possible interactions with other medications they may be taking. Yes, many medications come with some sort of printed insert full of fine print, but can you read and understand these inserts easily and with understanding? In many cases I can't, and I'm a research chemist with many years of training and 44 years of experience. That's why I turn to this excellent book by Dr. Rybacki when I want information about pharmaceutical drugs. It is well-written and easy-to-read and to understand. Furthermore, it almost invariably contains all the important information I am looking for, often including information I might not have thought that I needed. I can't recommend this important book too highly. I think everyone should have a copy -- including doctors. I'd like to add that even people who currently do not take any medications themselves may need this book if they care for children or relatives who do.
Easy to use and understand, but needs to cover newer drugs........2006-03-19
This book is very easy to use and is written in language that is easy to understand. I was disappointed that James Rybacki did not cover some of the newer drugs that are out and which have been used for several years. Many of these newer medications are being used more than some of the older medications which he did include in the book. I think that it needs further updating every year.
The absolute Best script book for laymen ever printed.......2006-03-18
The easiest, most understandable up to date book for laymen on the market, especialy when considering possible side effects of a med (as important as the targeted condition the med is taken for). It doesn't cover ALL drugs but the ones it does is in a comprehensive easy to use format.
I've been buying this book every year it's been in print (since 1987, except one or two years when it was wasn't reprinted). Some years it may not even get used but for 20 bucks when it's needed it's there.
Having tried, or thoroughly looked at, just about every med book on the market (including the Physcian's Desk Reference), I can, without reservation, say this one is the best for laymen. No one who takes any kind of medication should be without it.
Essential Guide.......2006-02-24
Excellent resource book. Has more information than any web site for drugs. Easy to understand and very thorough.
Well worth having on hand for basic info.......2006-02-22
This is one of the most accessable books for reading and understanding the basic and most common prescription drugs as well as their side effects and interactions with other medications and herbal remedies.
The info is timely, up to date and well-written. You'll only find more info in something like the PDR (Physicians Desk Reference) but the PDR is far too dense for the average person and is written with such complex medical terminology that you practically need a translator to understand. The Essential Guide is a good alternative, containing the most important facts. With it, you're likely to stay safe, informed and healthy.
In this age of soaring medical costs, I especially like the tips for saving money on medical care and prescriptions. There are also special sections for those in their 50s and 60s as well as a section for pregnant women. In short, this one covers all the bases.
One caveat: Don't assume that this book (or any) has the newest, most up to date info. Be pro-active and look for any changes in info, whether it be in your daily newspaper, on tv news shows or on internet sites. New research comes out every day (such as the new Black box warnings being put on many ADD meds) and NO book can possibly contain the absolute newest info. But as a basic reference guide, this one is just fine.

Payard Pâtisserie and Bistro has won the devotion of Manhattan's pickiest sweet tooths, who hardly know which of its treats to devour first: the extra-tart Lemon Tart, the Chocolate Mikado Cake, or the Frozen Coconut Soufflé, among other delights.
Besieged with requests for the recipes, the store's award-winning owner and pastry chef, Françoise Payard, has responded wisely with a book geared to the home baker. Simply Sensational Desserts presents over 140 Payard classics transformed (where necessary) to make their preparation absolutely accessible. Everyday and advanced bakers alike will delight in Payard's easy yet uncompromised formulas, not to mention the results they yield.
Beginning with chapters devoted to ingredients, fundamental techniques, and pastry basics like sweet tart dough and genoise--the building blocks of Payard's repertoire and never more simply conceived--the book also presents dessert soups, cookies and petits fours, chocolate cakes (don't miss the Chocolate Pudding Cake), tarts, soufflés, candies, ice creams, and granités. Special chapters devoted to weekend cakes like pain d'epices--portable treats designed for casual munching--and holiday cakes, cookies, and bites conclude the feast. And a feast it is: besides recipes for the four-star goodies mentioned above, Payard includes Rhubarb Lemongrass Soup, Pistachio-Almond Biscotti, Pecan Reine de Saba, Rustic Peach Tart, Chestnut Yule Log, and Soft Chocolate Caramels. Payard also offers his special take on Belgian waffles, tuiles (his pistachio-almond version is stellar), macaroons, pound and fruit cakes, charlottes, and that most perfect dessert (and dessert accompaniment), vanilla ice cream, among others. Color photos profile Payard's homey yet sophisticated desserts--all designed, as Payard tellingly notes, to be made. --Arthur Boehm

the best ..........2007-06-04
this book is for everybody who love good dessert, simple, easy and result are absolutely fantastic, even my sons (13 years old) use it
Practical, not over-charging resources, spectacular. .......2006-05-21
I am highly impressed with this book. There are too many cookbooks on the market written by chefs that advertise their own restaurants, or require highly expensive and inaccessible ingredients, or with recipes that require a whole weekend to construct just for visual effects, or all of the above. Francois Payard truly understands the needs and resources of a home cook.
So far, I have tried 5 dessert soups (mango soup with gingered raspberries is my favorite, and it caused a standing ovation from my family and guests), a few cookies (coconut tuiles are sooo simple and sooo delicious), 4 cakes ( the Chocolate Pudding Cake is the simplest cake in its category across several cookbooks, and fantastic in terms of flavor and impressive in terms of presentation; Gateau Alexandra caused deep envy of my husband's male friends :)), and 4 tarts, all of which turned out delicious and quite original. I appreciate that the author gives one recipe for tart dough which works for several of the sweet tarts (there are variations for some other tarts). I already had 6 lemon tarts/pies/cakes in my cooking repertoire, but Payard's lemon tart is just unbelievably flavorful, tasty, beautiful, and so simple! Mediterranean Swiss Chard tart is very original, takes little time to make (you can make several batches of tart dough once and use a prepared in advance batch), and is versatile - try it with other nuts, or golden raisins, or soak raisins in Amaretto instead of rum, or use dried cherries instead of raisins and soak them in Kirsch instead of rum. Hazelnut Tart with Chocolate Chantilly Cream also gives an ubelievable return on investment: it tastes great and looks very sophisticated for the actual time required to make it. It is somewhat rich, so I had to preceed it with a lighter entree when serving it as a dinner dessert course. There are recipes for warm souffles and for frozen souffles, which gives a good representation for one book. The photographs are beautiful. Not only is this book very practical, but it will also make a great gift.
I believe that this book is worth every penny and I recommend it very highly. Bravo, Francois Payard!
Fantastic book - wish I'd bought it earlier.......2005-09-15
I've been purchasing books from Amazon for ages. I love cookbooks - but especially books on baking. I've had my eye on this book for a while but I wish I'd bought it earlier. I've used several recipes from the book and they all turn out fantastic -some require a bit of effort - but you will be well rewarded. I made the bunny cake for my son's 3 year old birthday and every single person who tasted the cake raved and raved. Delicious recipes and great instructions. Thank you Mr Payard.
Disappointing, overall.......2005-08-10
Although there are a few good recipes, I found this cookbook to be disappointing overall. I'll start off with the good: The lemon tart recipe is not only delicious, but a breeze to make and worth the price of the book. The chocolate sorbet is also delicious. The quality of the paper and photographs are excellent, with many beautiful color photographs illustrating the finished product. Now the bad: There is at least one glaring typographical error in this book. The recipe for Linzer Cookies calls for over 2 sticks of butter, 1 cup of hazelnut flour and 1/3 cup of flour. These proportions simply do not work. I had to add at least 1 1/2 cups of flour to prevent the cookies from melting into puddles of butter in the oven. Given that the cover price is $35.00 and the author is a prominent N.Y.C. pastry chef, this alone justifies the two star rating. There simply should not be any recipes whose failure is not attributable to any individual person's taste preferences but to incorrect ingredient proportions. In addition, for what it's worth, three other recipes that I tried (Apricot Tea Cakes, Pineapple Tea Cakes, Golden Banana Cake) tasted very bad in my opinion.
For a good cookbook containing French-style pastries, try "Paris Sweets," by Dorie Greenspan instead.
Big Hoopla, Mediocre Recipes.......2004-09-18
This cook book starts out with many promises and a big name attached to a famous patisserie. There are some good points; in the end, however, it turns out to be a decent, if undistinguished, dessert book. This book is especially valuable for those who are fans of the author's eateries.
All of the popular, wonderful items at Payard's patisserie on the East Coast have been adapted for the home kitchen. Gone are the multiple component creations that take several days to execute at home, as are the sophisticated decorative touches that take talent and look like Picasso or Dali on a bad day. There are few components to do (e.g. only one pie crust recipe, rather than the dozen or so you will find in competing books), and all that is left is the wonderful taste. This, at any rate, is the stated intention of the author. Problem is, the recipes themselves are things you can find in almost any all purpose cook book, and there is little reason to pick this one over a cook book you might already have on your bookshelf. It is true, however, that all of the finicky bits are missing and procedures for the most part are not that difficult to do, and do not require any special skills.
The first part is a good step. It lists delineates tools, techniques, and basic recipes (genoise, simple syrup, buttercream, apricot glaze, etc.) that are crucial, but are often relegated as boring stuff tossed in at the end of many cook books. This book, happily, lists weights as well as volume measures for both liquid and dry ingredients, the mark of a good cook book author (thank you, chef). However, it has several lapses. It does not describe the proper procedure to beat egg whites, fold batter, or tell you what a batter that "ribbons" means. For ingredients: he specifies grade AA large, but does not indicate that the size ("large") and not the grade is important (AAA, AA, A, and even B will work as long as the egg size is correct); Armagnac is specified, but substitutes for those who cannot get or afford it are not specified (in fact, any decent quality brandy will do; I use California ones and usually get better flavors than with Armagnac), and a similar remark applies to his choice of chocolate (whenever a cookbook specifies Callebaut, I substitute Hershey's Special Dark, and always get identical results).
The Fruit Soup chapter is like Mexican agua fresca with Asian flavors (lemongrass, ginger, and five spice powder). Note that the Cookie chapter is about classic French cookies (tuiles, sables, macaroons, etc.), and not American ones. The Cake chapters were uninteresting, but the tarts were pretty good (especially the Lemon, and also the individual Tartes Tatin). In the Souffle chapter, half of them were frozen souffles (really just frozen mousse). I cannot tell you about the ice cream chapter, since I do not have an ice cream machine or a freezer cold enough to make granite. The last two chapters on Holiday stuff and Candy have some decent recipes. A listing of all recipes in the table of contents or chapter heads would be an improvement.

Customer Reviews:
Fuzzy Flowers.......2001-07-27
The title of this book should be "Fuzzy Flowers". I have never been so disappointed in receiving a flower arranging book!
Most of the color photographs of arrangements are taken in some kind of 'fog'. If this is done for some kind of artistic reason, one or two would be okay but to show almost every arrangement as though in a cloud of dust or out of focus is just unecessary. The arrangements themselves seem to be quite good if one could only discern their placement and color of flowers.
From a technical point of view, the text is useful and covers all one would need to know as a flower arranger.
I would not recommend this book to my friends and will give this one to my Garden Club.
Good reference.......2000-03-22
Malcolm Hiller's book is an excellent resource for floral design. The pictures are great! There are flower and foliage guides by season which are very helpful when selecting flowers for big events. Mr. Hiller's arrangements are also very different and inspiring.
Customer Reviews:
Great for beginners!.......1998-03-12
This book has many colorful pictures to inspire your creations. It has good step by step instructions for beginners. It also looks great on a coffee table!
Customer Reviews:
Great for color combinations.......2006-07-13
This book has a big emphasis on color and color combinations. The front of the book has pages of dried flower bunches grouped by color and the arrangements shown within the books pages all revolve around keeping within certain colors and color schemes to be used at particular times of the year or for certain occasions. Details a variety of different styles of arrangements and discusses texture and style. Photos are used to show arrangements for inspiration for your own ideas there are no detailed instructions to make particular items. There is some detailed information about making flower swags and ropes not found in a lot of books. I would not say this a book for a beginner it might be a bit intimidating but it's a great companion book anyone who wants to be creative.
Dried Flower Growing, Harvesting, and Arranging Made Easy.......2001-07-28
This book makes you want to run right out and cut a bundle of something to dry so you can make something gorgeous right away.
The fact that this book was first published in 1987 and is still being printed is testimony to the valuable information and beautiful photos contained inside.
When the two authors first penned this book, they had already been in the dried flower business for 17 years. Their expertise and understanding of their craft shows in every word they write.
Chapters include instructions for growing the plants, viewing what the plants look like when dried, choosing your wreath bases or making your own, constructing wreaths, hangings, bouquets, swags, and choosing containers for table arrangements.
One of the best features of this book is the chart at the back of the book that lists a hundred or more plants, their botanic names, which season to harvest the flowers or leaves and which drying method is the preferred for that plant.
There is a short reference to potpourri with several recipes, as well as a couple of pages on pressing flowers.
The section on Seasons and Special Occasions covers, not only the obligatory Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, but gives innovative ideas for weddings.
It is wonderful that the authors actually grow much of what they dry and that they air dry most of what they pick.
Every page has a tip or set of instructions to make your arrangements with dried flowers both successful and fun.
A Classic.......2001-01-19
I purchased this book 12 years ago when I developed an interest in making arrangements from dried flowers. Since then I have bought many more books on the topic and have made hundreds of arrangements, simple to elaborate. This is still my favorite book, and I refer to it often. Despite the fact that it was published in 1987, it is not dated. The section identifying dried flowers is comprehensive and well organized, as is the chapter on choosing containers. The instructions for making arrangements, wreaths, swags and specialty pieces are thorough and easy to follow. The floral arrangements are truly inspiring. The concepts are easily adaptable to silk, paper and fresh flowers.
Book Description
From an intricate corsage to a simple tied posy, flower arranging requires care and consideration. In this book advice is given on color, balance, scale and proportion, flower care, equipment, containers and using fruit and vegetables in displays.

Book Description
Latin Americans have long been relegated to the cultural background, obscured by the dominant European culture. This biographical dictionary profiles 75 artists from the United States and 13 nations of Central and South America and the Caribbean, including painters, sculptors, photographers, muralists, printmakers, installation artists, and performance artists. Some of their works recall pre-Columbian times; others confront the cultural imperialism of the U.S. over Latin America; and many explore how the dominant elements of culture can affect identities of class, gender, and sexuality. Profiled artists range from the renowned to the little-known: Frida Kahlo; Tina Modotti; Diego Rivera; Myrna Baez; Raquel Forner; Patrocino Barela; and many more. Color photographs are provided for many of the works. Each entry includes information about the artist's childhood, schooling, creative growth, and artistic styles and themes. Exemplary artworks and influences are described, along with a look at popular and critical responses. Supplemental features include artist cross references, a glossary of essential terms from the art world, and a number of vivid photos portraying the artists in their creative environments.

Book Description
This dictionary provides an exhaustive reference guide to representative figures in Hispanic literature within the geographic, political, and cultural boundaries of the United States. While concentrating on contemporary writers who have made or promise to make a lasting contribution to multiethnic letters in this country, it is designed to make accessible to the English-language reader a literary world that has until now been articulated primarily in Spanish. Focusing mainly on Puerto Rican and Cuban writers, each entry summarizes the importance of the subject and indicates the literary genres and themes cultivated. There is a brief biography of each author, an analysis of major works and themes, and a survey of the criticism of the author's works. The first and most comprehensive volume on the subject, this extraordinarily detailed sourcebook is a compilation of bio-bibliographical essays on leading Hispanic novelists, poets, and dramatists, and includes secondary bibliographies for each entry as well as a general bibliography on Hispanic literature. Especially highlighted are such authors as Nuyorican Miguel Pinero, winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best American Play; Chilean novelist, critic, and editor Fernando Alegria; the Cuban-American chronicler of life in Miami's exile community, Roberto Fernandez, and others. Kanellos' work answers a definite need for comprehensive biographical and critical information on these writers, and it will be a significant addition to academic and public libraries, and to research in Spanish, English, bilingual education, and ethnic studies.

Book Description
U.S. Latinos have made important contributions to American society, and this biographical dictionary is devoted to celebrating those contributions. All 127 men and women profiled in this work have immigrated to or been born in the United States and have made major contributions to American life and culture. Cuban Americans, Puerto Ricans, Mexican Americans, and others of Spanish, South American, Central American and Caribbean heritage--more than one-third of them women--represent 35 fields of endeavor and all 50 states. From historical figures to the newest sports champion, figure-skater Rudy Galindo, this work provides profiles of both prominent and important but less-familiar people who have made significant contributions in their fields. Many of those profiled can be found in no other biographical source. A selection of photos complements the text. All biographies have been written by experts in their ethnic fields. Those profiled range widely from distinguished scientists to sports stars, from actors to activists, from businesswomen to political personalities, from literary luminaries to labor organizers. All are potential role models for young men and women, and many have overcome extreme odds to succeed. These colorfully written, substantive biographies detail their subjects' goals, struggles, and commitments to success and to their ethnic communities. Among the 127 people profiled are: Nobel Prize-winning scientist Luis Alvarez; Treasurer of the United States Romana Acosta Banuelos; actor/composer/activist Ruben Blades; classical dancer Fernando Bujones; baseball player Jose Canseco; U.S. Secretary of Education Lauro Cavazos Jr.; writer Sandra Cisneros; fashion designer Oscar de la Renta; U.S. Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart; teacher Jaime Escalante; composer/singer Gloria Estefan; tennis players Gigi Fernandez and Mary Joe Fernandez; playwright Maria Fornes; U.S. Men's 1996 Figure Skating Champion Rudy Galindo; physician/political activist Hector Garcia; Coca-Cola CEO Roberto Goizueta; labor leader Dolores Huerta; U.S. Ambassador Mari-Luci Jaramillo; artist Marisol; civil-rights activist Vilma Socorro Martinez; businessman/politician Jorge Mas Canosa; federal judge Harold Medina; graphic artist Nicholasa Mohr; U.S. Surgeon General Antonia Novello; astronaut Ellen Ochoa; Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Severo Ochoa; TV personality Geraldo Rivera; U.S. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen; educational psychologist George I. Sanchez; newspaper editor Roberto Suarez; women's rights activist/businesswoman Maria Elena Torano-Pantin; New York State Supreme Court Judge Edwin Torres; mystic Teresa Urrea; film producer/director Luis Valdez. For ease of use, the heading of each profile identifies ethnic group, field of endeavor, birthdate and, where appropriate, death date. Each profile concludes with a suggested reading list of books and periodical articles about the subject. An ethnic index, field of endeavor index, and a general index make research easy. This much needed reference work is essential for school and public libraries.
