Spam.......2004-12-16
I have not read the other Penn Dutch mysteries but the Spam in the title caught my eye. Magdalena was funny, especially with the nicknames but she talked about her ex-husband too much. I enjoyed Strubly Sam and the other characters. The mystery was too rushed which is why I give it only 3 stars. Had there been more focus on the mystery and sleuthing throughout the book and less about the ex-husband it would have rated higher.
The most ridiculous book I've ever started reading!.......2004-05-05
This book is the silliest pile of nonsense I have ever run across. If you've got nothing better to do with your time than read one of the Penn Dutch Inn books then you've got more time than good sense.
Unbelievable bad!.......2004-04-06
I received three books from this series as a gift. I have to wonder if the person that gave them to me did it as a passive-agressive form of punishment. All three books(including this one)were terrible. Every book in this series seems to have the same awful one-liners. It takes way to long to develop anything even remotely resembling a plot. You can't even figure out when the "mystery" has been solved because you haven't even realized one began. The main character is completely unlikeable. I just wanted her to be murdered to end the misery that is this series. I am a huge mystery buff and I have never disliked any books so much. This auther is horrible.
Magdalena Funny Again........2003-11-23
In this book, Magdalena is funny again. Some of the humour in the last few books has seemed forced and slapstick, but in this book Magdalena is her usual hilarious self. The book also has a little thicker plot than usual as Magdalena gets drawn into a reunion of World War II vets who have rented out rooms in her newly rebuilt inn. (the first inn was apparently destroyed by a tornado sometime between this book and the one previous). We also meet a new character that I hope we see more of - Strubbly Sam. He's wonderful - an Amish widower who may be after Magdalena (and he cooks too). I am looking forward to other books in this series again.

Very detailed and helpful book........2007-02-21
This book is very detailed and quite informative about this subject. It is pretty deep reading compared with "Your Body Doesn't Lie", but it is also very helpful on the subject. I would not suggest this book for newbies, but rather for those that would rather delve deeper into the subject.
very interesting.......2005-10-11
Its one of my favorites, all of the tricks that it mentions are great. Its hard to stop reading, its full of great information and tips, it opened my eyes as to how far chiropractic treatment together with kinesiology will help people eliminate obstructions, and achieve great health.
It has it all.......2002-03-07
It contains practical detox recipes and instructions, muscle testing guidelines and easy to read charts. It goes into alternative therapies and yet, thankfully in my case, skips gem therapy.
Expected More.......2002-02-25
The book did cover Clinical Kinesiology and related areas, but not at the depth that I had expected based on the other reviews of the book. The authors presented "real" examples, but failed to follow up with corrective solutions for the "lay person". Most of the solutions were "your muscle tested weak, see a professional for help". I didn't expect the level of detail that is contained in the six Beardall books, but some corrective examples (like in the Touch For Health books) would have been appropriate. Enough said, it was interesting reading.
Awesome! Great for any health professional.......2000-05-27
I found this book to be very insightful and detailed. It is easy enough for laymen as well as the professional. I got a hold of this book after training in Applied Kinesiology (AK). After a long hard look it appears that this book is the only Clinical Kinesiology book in print. All others appear to be out of print. I would enjoy more published work based on the late Alan Beardall, D.C.. Also, I'd like to comment on the great section in the book on sub-clinical Candidiasis.
Truely a great book (especially for the cost).
Book Description
Each title in this award-winning series offers an exquisite region-by-region taste tour filled with culinary specialties and surprises. Included in each large-format volume are gorgeous food and landscape photographs.
Customer Reviews:
SUPER!.......2006-06-07
I'm more and more impressed with each cook book I receive from this series. The recipe directions are easy to follow, the food is great and the pictures are almost National Geographic like. I really liked this one because I'm more familiar with the types of recipes, being that I'm a resident in the U.S. I'm looking forward to more cooking with this wonderful book!
My favorite in the series !!!.......2005-04-03
I now own four books from the "Beautiful Cookbook" series. This is by far my favorite. The food stylists and photographers for this particular book have raised the bar to a dizzying height. This melange of simple and upscale recipes is presented as down-to-earth...Texas-style. You can almost smell and taste the beautiful food. The stylish photos are works of art.
The recipes range from the traditional basics to "new Texas cuisine." Try to imagine a chilled "Cream of Tomatillo Soup" served in a bowl of ice...with edible flowers and herbs encased in the ice. (The ice bowl is easy to make!)
Does "Hot Crackered Texas Crab with Pecans" sound good? Or "Chili-and-Cheese Corn Husk Muffins with Pumpkin-Seed Topping"? What about "Chorizo-Stuffed Poblanos with Mango Salsa" or "Texas Hot-Pepper Shrimp with Avocado Salsa"? And for dessert, how about "Churros with Cinnamon-Pecan Ice Cream" or "Blueberry Creme Brulee with Rose Geranium"?
I could go on and on about the food and the presentation. These tempting and colorful dishes can all be made by the novice cook who enjoys the preparation.
Outstanding recipes and history.......2000-04-21
I LOVE this book! Highly recommended. Great pictures and food. Very authentic to the region. Great for the home or professional chef. A nice addition to anyone's collection.

500 Things My Ferret Told Me
ASIN: 0764100939 |
Product Description
Furry, cuddly, and bursting with energy, lovable ferrets are becoming increasingly popular as family pets. However, keeping a ferret in the home is different from keeping a dog or cat. Books on ferrets are readily available, but Training Your Pet Ferret is the only volume that speaks directly to the issue of training. The authors explain that effective training can start anytime, whether the owner adopts an adult ferret or purchases a baby as kit. The first seventeen chapters give information on housing and equipment. Following chapters give practical advice on litter box training, getting family members including the kids used to frequent handling of the ferret, protecting the animal against household hazards, protecting carpets and houseplants from ferret damage, communicating with your pet, and even walking on a leash, hassle-free travel, and games to play. Handsome, full-color photos help to demonstrate training techniques and show ferrets in the household. Paperback / 96 Pages / 6-1/2" x 7-7/8" / 1997
Customer Reviews:
Very good training book!.......2007-09-16
I loved this training guide! I loved the tips, handling instructions, and reward hints the author wrote about! This is a must have for every ferret owner!
Okay, but not for every ferret.......2005-10-24
My ferrets are either too smart or too stupid to be trained. The pictures were cute, but I couldn't find anything in it that I didn't already know from Ferrets for Dummies or Modern Ferret magazine. I read it once and gave it to the local humane society's library.
Some good info in there.........2003-07-21
This isn't the best book out there for ferret information, but it does have some interesting tidbits in it and a bunch of cute pictures. I haven't been able to successfully use many of the methods talked about in the book with my ferrets, but it's possible they work for someone else. Every ferret is different! I give it four stars because some of the information is good, and the pictures are adorable. For the price, I can't complain. :)
Trite, affectatious waste of ink.......2002-12-31
Do authors needing to start every thought with inane questions make you giggle more than thorazine? Do you have have commercial grade insulin handy for inoculations after every annacdote {which is on par with Elvis sightings?). Then this book is for you.
Having raised seven and now that my girlfriend has added eight and nine ferrets I feel I a qualified to comment on the usefulness of this book - nil. We added this book to qualify for free shipping while ordering Ferrets for Dummies - a much better buy. {loads of valuable info}
Read Ferrets for Dummies and if you have a bird line the bird cage with with Ms. Somerville's exercise in ferret dreaming.
One of the Best.......2000-06-30
Training Your Pet Ferret is the only book I have read that really does go in depth about how to train your ferret. It is filled with useful tips and advice on how to raise a better pet. Each page in the book has information that you can use. I have used many of the tips in this book and they all have seemed to work out perfectly for me. I am very satisifed with this book. As it says in the authors note, this is not a general care guide. This is a training guide. The only thing that I thought was bad about this book is the ferret pictures. The ferrets pictured in this book always look sad and unhappy. That is the only drawback, other than that, this is a perfect book for a new ferret owner or a ferret owner that has owned ferrets for many years.

Book Description

Includes precise botanical illustrations to aid in identification.
Customer Reviews:
Culpeper's Complete Herbal.......2007-01-10
The book was in excellent condition and arrived in very short order. I had, however, expected it to be a bit more of a modern resource book. No worries, it was reasonably priced, I'm keeping it and pleased to add it to my library. I'm a new student to his works. Now that I'm up to speed on his style, I am interested in obtaining Culpeppers Colorful Herbal, if anyone knows anyone who has one in good condition?
17th Century Herbal Remedies.......2005-06-25
This book played an important and yet controversial role between formal medicine and herbalism.
Nicholas Culpeper(1616-1654) studied medicine at Cambridge, but gave up his studies when his fiancée was killed in a thunderstorm. Culpeper eventually set up his own healing practice near London. He was moved by the suffering of the poor and decided to help the them by selling medicines to them at a very cheap price and encouraged them to use local species.
In the 17th century, the physicians were leaning more toward non-botanical medications such as mercury, arsenic iron and sulfur etc. It is most likely that the physicians of that day resented Culpeper's popularity and considered him a threat, since be made their secrets accessible to the common person--therefore they tried to discredit him.
The people of England due to his genuine concern for them loved Culpeper. The colonist took his herbal to the New World as a medical reference and guide of when to plant and harvest these medical plants.
His mistake was he threatening the near monopoly on medical knowledge that the College of Physicians enjoyed.
This book contains a comprehensive description of nearly all herbs along with descriptions of their medicinal properties and instructions on preparing and using them to treat many different illnesses. It also included precise botanical illustrations. For 300 years this book was the standard for herbal remedies.
A view on Medieval/Renaissance Herbalism and Medicine.......2000-11-21
I first heard of this book as being an excellent primary source for herbs and herbalism from the 16/17th Centuries.
It is very comprehensive and aside from a listing of each herb and its properties, it has several sections teaching the fundiments of medicine of the time. It covers:
* how a herb is assigned to a planet
* how a degree of strength is determined and what it means
* what 'humours' it affects and what 'humours' (bodily fluid systems) are
* and much much more.
If you are looking for a source to use for alternate medicine then this is NOT the best starting place. There are better works of a modern nature out there for that. However, as a back-up resource or a way of learning about the time when medicine was still holistic and not too scentific then this is he book for you.
The Wordsworth edition is in paperback and easy on the pocket. This publisher takes certain classic works and keeps them in print in small runs from time to time by demand. This means that although the book may be not immediately available, it will beome available again in the near future.
I hope this helps you.
Culpeper's Complete Herbal.......2000-01-09
If you have an interest in Herbs and their culinary, mystic and medicinal usages, both modern and historical, then this IS the book for you. It is beautifully illustrated and text is written in both medieval English and modern English.
Each plant (it includes some fruits and trees as well) is pictured and the habitat is described. Along with each description is any affinity to a ruling planet as well.
My only critisism is that it contains a great deal of jargon, you will need to read up on herbalism per se to understand how to make tinctures etc. That said the book is a reference to the plants not the art.
I have had my (well thumbed copy)for over 10 years now and it is a constant companion to my interests in the natural power of the Earth and her fruits.

Great Reference.......2004-06-25
This is a great reference book for anyone who is learning about herbs, their uses, and their true names. It reads well, covers the topics thoroughly without being boring... which is saying something! :) However...
This book has an obvious European bias which makes it difficult for someone like me in the USA to get all the info that I need. I will have to find another N.American reference book to complete my training. However, that is the ONLY problem with this book. It is, without question, the most thorough book I have on the subject, and certainly the easiest read.

Book Description
The book of travels by Evliya Celebi, the Seyahatname, is one the richest works of Ottoman prose and belongs to the most important narrative sources for the history of the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century. In addition to numerous anecdotes it offers a plethora of information about different subjects and for most of the regions of the Ottoman Empire. This book contains the edition of the travels made by Evliya Celebi in 1649-1650 from Syria to Istanbul. The main stops described on his journey are Urfa, Kayseri, Aksaray, Sivas and the plain of Muy. The edition is given in Ottoman transcription with a German translation. In addition, it contains a list of contents according to the headlines of the text, two glossaries and an index.

Product Description
This landmark book, first published in 1953 in a private keepsake edition and later revised and expanded, remains an indispensable reference for students of book design. It presents Stanley Morison at his best: opinionated, eclectic, offering his characteristic blend of erudition and insight. Finally available again after many years, A Tally of Types discusses twenty different faces, many cut under Morison's direct supervision, and most of them now translated into digital settings.
This is the real history behind the letters: who first cut them, how they were used (and should be used), and how the modern versions became accessible. Each essay is set in the typeface it discusses, making the book an exciting visual adventure as well as teaching of primary importance. An invaluable aid for modern practitioners and historians alike, this edition contains a new introduction by Mike Parker, former co-director of Typographic Development at the Mergenthaler Corporation.
Customer Reviews:
Visual and historical information.......2004-04-22
Typography may be unique among arts in its historical ties to commerce. Type foundries create and sell fonts as a matter of business. Trades like printing and advertising have historically publicized type by using it, and driven the creation of new fonts. Typography is also distinctive in that, for such small field, it has so many large personalities.
Stanley Morison is one of those personalities, and one of the people who made 20th century typography what it was. He had a unique insight into the type trade of the first half of that century, as well as a wealth of history about several other centuries of type design and designers.
The most strinking feature of this book is the way each chapter about some important typeface is set in that face. Seeing and reading a whole page of body text, set and spaced in the usual way, is fundamentally different from seeing menu of "quick brown foxes" or pages of nonsense words. Reading the type is different from looking at letterforms, so this gives real information that specimen books can never provide. (As a personal matter, I realized just how much I dislike the italics with slope angles different in the capitals than in the lower case.)
Don't pick this up as a text on typography; beginners won't get much they can use. If you already appreciate that subtle art, if you want to learn more about its history and practice, this is a very enjoyable way to learn.
Definitely worth reading.......2000-04-08
This book provides a great insight into the history and design of type, and quite a bit of the commentary is useful even today. Morison is well known, of course, for the Times New Roman face - and there is a section in the book on that face. But his commentary on the designing of faces like Plantin and Bembo is much more interesting, if you ask me. Also, if you are at all a fan of Eric Gill, you will like the section on Perpetua and Felicity. Anyone interested in the history of type should have this book, that much is certain.
Book Description
Home to one of the world's great arts festivals, the capital of Scotland is a city of contrasting moods and atmospheres. Rising from the volcanic ridge that runs from the Castle Rock to Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh is a combination of living history and vibrant modernity. The historic fastness of the Castle presides over the classical sweep of the New Town, the eccentric charm of the Old, the affluent haughtiness of the West End, and the whimsical respectability of the Southside. Gothic, Georgian and Modernist rub shoulders in this eclectic city, while literature, the visual arts, music, and drama have all flourished through the ages.
From the glories of the Royal Mile to the gritty reality of Leith, this book reveals the many faces, past and present, of a great world city.
CITY OF HISTORY: Royal intrigue and murder; Holyrood and the Castle; the building of the New Town; philosophers and bigots; Scottish nationalism and the devolved parliament.
CITY OF LEGEND: Underground Edinburgh; Mary King's Close and other ghostly tales; Greyfriars Bobby and Burke and Hare.
CITY OF LITERATURE: Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson; the poets of the Scottish Renaissance; Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting; J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter.

Makes me homesick for Scotland.......2004-07-06
I was born and went to school in Edinburgh, but have been an exile for 30 years, visiting as often as I can. My library on Edinburgh and its history is extensive, yet every chapter of this book gave me new and fascinating details about the city, past and present. The reading style of the book is lively and approachable, with interesting quotations, and I plan to acquire my own copy as soon as this one goes back to the library, so that I can add personal notes.
The information is accurate, as assessed by my visit at Easter, and the illustrations good, if a little sparse. The only addition I would suggest is a map showing how Campbell divided the city into regions, marked with the appropriate chapter numbers.
