Like Edinburgh inspector John Rebus, the resurrection men of the title are treading on thin ice--they've all been sent to a short course at the Scottish Police College because they've failed in some way, generally "an issue with authority." Rebus has been known to have issues of that nature before, which only boosts his credibility with the other cops in attendance, suspected by their bosses of being on the wrong side of the fence, on the take, or even guilty of murder on several previous occasions. The dour Inspector's agenda aims to bring the higher-ups proof of the so-called Wild Bunch's nefarious activities; in the process, his own conduct in the old case he and his college classmates must rework and revisit comes under scrutiny. A solid police procedural whose protagonist, the hero of 14 other titles in this internationally acclaimed series, continues to grow on readers who are just discovering him. --Jane Adams

Book Description

Inspector John Rebus has messed up badly this time, so badly that he's been sent to a kind of reform school for damaged cops. While there among the last-chancers known as "resurrection men," he joins a covert mission to gain evidence of a drug heist orchestrated by three of his classmates. But the group has been assigned an unsolved murder that may have resulted from Rebus's own mistake. Now Rebus can't determine if he's been set up for a fall or if his disgraced classmates are as ruthless as he suspects.

When Detective Sergeant Siobhan Clarke discovers that her investigation of an art dealer's murder is tied to Rebus's inquiry, the two-protÈgÈ and mentor-join forces. Soon they find themselves in the midst of an even bigger scandal than they had imagined-a plot with conspirators in every corner of Scotland and deadly implications about their colleagues.

With the brilliant eye for character and place that earned him the name "the Dickens of Edinburgh," Ian Rankin delivers a page-turning novel of intricate suspense.

1 out of 5 stars extremely boring.......2007-05-25

This book was so boring that I gave up. I really cannot understand how it could win the Edgar Award (usually books which won this award are good).

3 out of 5 stars You'd Better Have Your Wits About You.......2007-04-17

"Resurrection Men" is the fifteenth in the Detective Inspector John Rebus police procedural series by the outstanding, increasingly appreciated Scots author Ian Rankin, still a young man, lucky for us. In contrast to most Scots mystery writers at work now, Rankin sets his best-of-tartan-noir universe in the east coast Edinburgh, rather than the west coast Glasgow; it's a more beautiful, smaller city, the capital of the country, where you might expect the crime to be white collar, rather than blue. But Rebus always seems to find enough to keep busy.

As the book opens, Rebus has been sent undercover to Tulliallan Police College, where recruits are trained, and troublesome older officers sent to resurrect their careers. Sir David Strathern, chief constable of Lothian and Borders Police, Rebus's permanent posting, suspects several of the officers currently at the college are dirty, and he wants Rebus to find the proof. To Rebus, of course, this a difficult assignment. Aside from the obvious, St. Leonard's, his station house, is in the midst of an engrossing enquiry: Edward Marber, local art dealer, has been done in, and many of the usual suspects are known to Rebus. The policeman finds the college assignment doubly difficult because, for the unsolved case the officers there are always given to work, they're given a case they've never been given before. It's the Rico Lomax case, it was Rebus's, and he knows much too much about it. He can't help wondering...

Rankin is a highly talented writer with a great grip of the English language, Scottish subdivision; a grasp of police work, the ability to keep these three strong subplots going at one time, that sharp Scots humor, and the toughest tartan noir outlook around. Unfortunately, "Resurrection Men" has a few too many characters, and cites unfamiliar-to-Americans police nomenclature a little too often. It took me two readings to get it, and that's with helpful tables upfront.

The youthful writer is also a sharp observer of his city's weather, ambiance, and social systems. He writes that Edinburgh cops call their morgue the "dead center," and are proud to say they work at the dead center of Edinburgh. "The building," he writes, "is tucked away on the Cowgate, one of the city's more secretive streets. Few pedestrians ever found themselves there, and the traffic was intent on being elsewhere."

The author writes further on pedestrians and traffic: a "pavement drunk" causes them to step out onto the road. "The drunk was making for the opposite pavement, stumbling blindly across the road. They both knew he'd make it. He was carrying a bottle: no way a motorist would want that flying through his windshield."

"You worked hard all week, then prayed for oblivion at the weekend," Rebus muses of his city's inhabitants. But you'd better have your wits fully about you when you tackle this book.

4 out of 5 stars This is a throwback to English genre mystery books of the 60's.......2007-01-21

I think it is fitting that I am writing this just after 'Elizabeth' who wrote in her review that this book is "more a "guy type" book." That made me laugh because I was thinking this is more of a 'gal type' book and maybe that's why a lot of it left me wanting for more.

I think of this book as a throwback to the pre- Dick Francis days of English writing. Obviously, resurrection men is a contemporary novel, but it has the feel of a forgotten genre book of yesteryear in its unfolding contemplative and methodical story. I am currently trying to make it through the Edgar award winners and finalists listed here at Amazon. Rankin made it onto this list and for that reason alone I picked it up. What I came away with on completion of this book is that it is not the normal style of writing that I am pulled towards and it is not one that I will seek out in the future. I have read a lot of English mystery/thrillers, from Francis' work to Agatha Raisin and would push you in this direction over Rankin.

About the book... This is a story that never really grabbed me. The writing and character development is good enough to take note of, and the plot is complicated and original enough to perk ones interest. The story is understated and this is nice when you compare it to the likes of Patricia Cornwells 9th or 10th book and her heroine is tracking down several rampaging serial killers at once on two continents. Here we have the classic police procedural unfolding in a too dry manner. I am not English and find more affinity with the works of the 87th precinct or Hillermans stories that here. It might just be the cultural divide that was keeping me from entirely relishing this work. All I can say is that all the components are here for a first rate book, but for some reason, I just didn't enjoy it very much and why this is so is a mystery in itself for me.

3 out of 5 stars Resurrection Man.......2007-01-03

The book was chosen by my book club. It wasn't really my kind of read, more a "guy type" book.

3 out of 5 stars (three and a half stars) overall, a good crime thriller.......2006-11-30

Having learned that I had recently returned from a vacation in Scotland, a friendly neighbor handed me "Resurrection Men," not a book I would normally purchase, because I'm generally not into the "crime thriller" genre. To be honest, although Ian Rankin is obviously a talented writer, I found the plot and various sub-plots to be somewhat convoluted and, on occasion, simply absurd. Rankin juggles numerous characters, and thankfully provides the reader with a dramatis personae. Without this, I would have completely lost the thread of the more minor characters, some of whom, to me, were pretty much interchangeable. I'm sure that, like most serial novels, those who read prior John Rebus books had a much easier time following the web of characters and plots.

Nevertheless, I'm glad I read this book, and will one day pick up other Rankin works. Alot of "Resurrection Men" takes place in Edinburgh (pronounced, as I quickly learned, "Edinboro"), which is where I stayed in Scotland, so that was kind of fun. Knowing how many pubs there are, it didn't shock me how much the characters drank (with the notable exception of Siobhan, probably the most interesting character in the book) but it struck me that most of these people, including Rebus himself, were arguably alcoholics.

[SPOILER COMING UP!!!] One problem I had with the plot was that if three detectives, who recently comitted a serious (but seemingly undetected) crime together, are suddenly removed from duty simultaneously, and placed in a re-training program, wouldn't they be highly suspicious of any other detective who joins their little group? I would. Rebus' cover story was quite ridiculous and transparent.

In conclusion, "Resurrection Men," is certainly not without flaws, but anyone who enjoys crime thrillers should definitely check out Ian Rankin.

1 out of 5 stars There is good fantasy, and then there is this.......2005-04-14

I have no idea who Michael Scott is, but he should never work with Morgan Llewelyn again. She (Llewelyn) is one of the finest authors of fantasy and historical fiction I have ever read. Having studied in Ireland for half a year, I was able to garner a real appreciation for her books.

This however, is the fantasy equivalent of the worst sort of romance novel. It is trite and unoriginal. The characters are ridiculous and I feel no sympathy for them. When an author has to tell you how they feel, you know they are not doing a good job. I constantly felt like I was reading a psycho-analysis (and a poorly written one at that) instead of a book. SHOW, don't tell! One of the first rules in every creative writing class. Show me how they are feeling through their actions and their words. Don't tell me. Ugh.

If you want real fantasy, try George Martin, read Neil Gaiman, try Robert Jordan, (well at least the first few books). Read any of Morgan Llewelyn's other books such as Lion of Ireland, Bard, or Finn MacCool. But don't read this. It is a sophomoric fantasy that could have been written by anyone in middleschool. Michael Scott, whoever you are, stay away from Llewelyn, do not pollute her writing anymore. Thank god there are no more sequels to this garbage.

        4 out of 5 stars may i present a trilogy???.......2002-03-04

I am in agreement with most of the others on here. I absolutely loved the first two books. And have been waiting anxiously for the third to come out. The characters are well written and you really get a feel for them and we have been left hanging on their fate. This is a problem that just wont do to be continued as such! I really hope they will reconsider and write that third book. If just to bring a finality to the whole thing!!

        4 out of 5 stars It's Awsome.......2002-01-10

i Loved the book but like the second reveiwer said is does go on a bit but that easy enough to fix simple scan over it till you get to the interesting part again and continue reading but i like the plot and the characters and find it very well writen and trully wish thwe Autors would reconsider and write the third book

        1 out of 5 stars No exclaimation.......2001-06-12

While it's sad that there is no follow up book, there's probably a reason. The reason is probably that this is the worst thing I have ever seen with Morgan Llywelyn's name on it (Sorry, never read Michael Scott before). She is one of my favourite authors and EVERYTHING else by her that I have read has been magnificent. This repetive plot of boy designated by prophesy must save the world has become tiresome. The Wheel of Time has stretched into oblivion, with the Sword of Truth following afterwards, and it was done 30 years ago with Star Wars. The writer also repeats passages over and over, almost as if to drag the reader out of their sleep and remind tham what they reading. While these passages are appreciated at the start of a sequel, I only want to hear ONCE per book that Gwynne lost her family and is so sad etc etc. Anyway, I highly suggest Llywelyn's other works (Bard, Druids, Finn MacCool, The Red Branch, The Horse Goddess) but The Arcana Series isn't even worth half-price book cost.

        5 out of 5 stars OUTRAGEOUS.......2000-11-14

I'm a great fan of this fantasy n-logy and find outrageous that there won't be a follow-up in the series. It's like geting us readers out of the table before serving dessert. I beg the authors to finish it!!!

This was an extremely informative book. I would recomend it to anyone who wants to learn about becoming a vegetarian.

        5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2007-07-05

This book covers all the bases of becoming a vegetarian..even the ones you may have not thought of! I was especially concerned with iron consumption and absorption...COVERED! The authors obviously have first hand knowledge of what new vegetarians go through, from the psychology of "coming out" to friends and family to nutritional concerns. I have had many questions already and the book hasn't let me down yet.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-07-03

I think this book is a must for anyone that is considering becoming a vegetarian. It is not something that you just jump into without researching. This book explains vegetarianism from a nutritional perspective, without being to preachy. Even if you're not thinking of becoming a vegetarian, the health information in this book is very easy to understand, and a definate eye opener.

5 out of 5 stars straightforward, easy to understand nutritional advice.......2007-05-17

When I decided to become vegetarian I knew I wanted to do it in a healthy way and this book helped me do it. It provides all the information you need on how to create a balanced diet for yourself, and it breaks it down very simply so that you can understand what your body needs and what foods you need to be eating to meet those needs. It is not a cookbook, it's a nutrition book, but I have found it invaluable in planning this new way of eating. I eat much better now than I did before and that is largely due to the fact that I now understand what I need to be eating. The chapter I found most helpful was the one on the vegetarian food guide pyramid. It shows you all the categories and how many of each you should eat, and gives you a scoresheet so you can check to make sure you are eating enough of everything. The authors also give helpful advice on how to deal with some of the social aspects of being vegetarian, which to my surprise came in handy as a couple of weeks ago a co-worker said to me, "Well, that goes against my Christianity--God told us to rule the animals"--even this sort of thing is addressed in this book!

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for!.......2007-05-04

When I first realized that I no longer enjoyed eating meat, I immediately thought that I would need some kind of guide to help me get a healthy and balanced vegetarian diet. I began searching and asking around, and "The New Becoming Vegetarian" was reccomended to me. I'm so happy I bought it. The very first thing that surprised me was how easy it was to read. I was afraid that it be very dry, but it wasn't. It's probably the single most important and informative book I've ever read. I have learned so much from this book. With it, I realized that even when I was eating meat, my diet wasn't necessarily healthy, because I wasn't balancing nutrients correctly. I'm also fueled with so much information, that I can intelligently respond to almost every question or concern that I've been faced with so far. In fact, this book is so full of information that I will definitly have to read it again!
I now know how and where to get every nutrient I need, without eating any meat. I now know how to lower my risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and obesity. And I now have a very solid foundation of knowledge on which I can build a vegetarian lifestyle. Now, if only I could actually cook...
My only complaint about the book is Chapter 10: Vegetarian for Life. The chapter gives insite on how to construct a healthy vegetarian diet no matter if you're pregnant or if you're feeding children, or very elderly. However, there is no section for people 19 to 54. The Table of Contents says that "Part 4" of the chapter is for people "13 and over," but when you flip to the section it's really only for teenagers 13-18. Then "Part 5" jumps straight to people 55+. I can't find a section anywhere in the book that's for people in my age group. Ah well, despite that one flaw, it's a very great book overall. I fully reccomend it to anyone!

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-13

I loved this book. It is a great read with lots of things most people who are not Greek would not know.

4 out of 5 stars food, facts and anecdotes.......2007-05-12

Hoffman has managed the right mix of anecdotes, Greek myths, folklore, history and recipes. This is one of those enjoyable creatures: a readable cookbook. The recipes are practical and delightful. Be careful: if you have visited Greece, it will make you desperate to return; if you haven't, it will make you want to visit.
The prose is a bit overdone, epecially when she waxes liyrical about how "Greek beckons with rich and vivid people, multifarious folkways - and incredible food." But her passion for things Greek is excusable. A delightful book on all counts.

5 out of 5 stars Fits on any bookshelf, not just in the kitchen!.......2007-02-20

Having never been to Greece, I won't even begin to comment on how "authentic" Ms. Hoffman's recipes are. They are, however, accompanied by many sidebars, articles, anecdotes and mini history lessons that make the recipes seem like illustrations in a wonderful travel book.

The recipes run the gamut from difficult (exotic ingredients and complicated prep) to simple (glass of water, anyone?) and not all dishes are for everyone. But there is a nice sense of generality to the collection, from the traditional to the seasonal, as if everything you ever wanted to *sample* from a Greek table is in this book.

What really makes it so attractive, however, is the conversational running commentary kept up by the author throughout. One learns why water is such a sacred inclusion at the Greek table, why Constantinoble became Istanbul, and what it takes for a foreign woman to be accepted by her Greek neighbors. Whether giving us a history lesson or just a glimpse into modern daily life, Ms. Hoffman's experiences in the Greek Isles are an invaluble inclusion here. 5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-10-02

This book is a very well organized history and recipe book in one. Not only that, the entire book is a work of art, it is soooo beautiful to look at.

        5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Adventure.......2005-12-09

This book is truly a winner. The recepies are just delicious and I have been serving them not only to my own family but at school meetings and community parties, and everybody wants to know where I got them and what makes them so increadibly good! But also all the little stories and facts are delightful. Each one is like a new little adventure within a greater adventure. I have never been to Greece but if it's anything like it sounds like from this book, I want to go there--and never leave! I will take this book as my guide as i move from dish to dish! A charming, lovely cookbook which has brought me many happy friends and smiles.

            Book Description

From 1900 to the end of the sailing ship era, West Coast shipping companies became the predominant owners of the last breed of sailing ships, the square riggers. Most of these ships were built elsewhere, but became a representative part of Pacific commerce, basing their operations at west coast ports from California to British Columbia. Included is a detailed insight into the sailing ships known as the Lord Templeton, Somali, and Glenesslin.

2 out of 5 stars Put Back this Front Yard Book.......2004-02-26

I love elaborate front yard plantings, but this book just isn't the inspirational guide that Liz Primeau's similar "Front Yard Gardens: Growing More Than Grass" is.

It's a fairly pedestrian, utilitarian book, nothing special. The Primeau alternative actually conveys a sense of the excitement and adventure inherent in de-lawning your front, and the examples shown are more interesting than the bland gardens depicted here in Taunton's offering.

I've read through this once, then returned it to the library. "Front Yard Gardens" I bought, and I've read through it three times. Buy it instead. Do redo your garden, but don't expect Taunton's Front Yard Idea Book to inspire you.

Note: a 3 star ranking from me is actually pretty good; I reserve 4 stars for tremendously good works, and 5 only for the rare few that are or ought to be classic; unfortunately most books published are 2 or less.

                    5 out of 5 stars Ohhhhh! Excellent!!.......2003-12-13

I can't begin to say how much I adore this book!! I'm telling you now, if you read this book from cover to cover & allow yourself to digest each & every picture, you'll never look at a front yard the same again. Literally, American is stuck in a rut. I look up & down my street, & all I see are blank, bland, boring lawns!! Wretch! This book has made me realize something that took me directly out of that silly, traditional mindset: I PAY AS MUCH FOR MY FRONT YARD AS I DO MY BACKYARD! This book has motivated me to "reclaim" my front yard for my own use, & I can't wait to have it all in & done! It won't be my neighbor's front yard anymore! It won't look like public domain anymore!!!

5 out of 5 stars Practical ideas for real houses not magazine covers.......2003-11-12

A good-looking front yard isn't just a wise investment in your home, it's a gift to your neighborhood. Webber's book is packed with ideas for real families and real houses. For example, the book's chapter "Driveways and Parking" offers ideas on expanding a narrow driveway or parking spot, even parking bays and pull-offs!

Webber uses a logical, easy to follow pattern. First she gets us thinking about our goals for an area, then she provides reliable information, combined with Taunton's characteristically good photography.

All in all, the book's a good investment for any homeowner with a front yard.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great ideas.......2003-06-17

My book is so filled with post-its marking which ideas I'll be emulating. It may take awhile, but it'll be worth it if my front yard ends up anywhere near as beautiful as some of these pictures. I'm looking forward to enjoying my front yard in a private garden setting, just like I enjoy my back yard. It's mine to enjoy, not to work like a dog on just for the neighbors benefit!

Editing to add - it is now three years after I originally posted this review. I used many of the ideas learned from this book, and it sparked many of my own! My front yard looks like a park, I love to look out my windows and enjoy. Even a walk to the mailbox has become a serene experience because of the lush gardens and plantings.
People drive through our neighborhood, stop in front of our house and I see them looking and pointing at different gardens, etc. We'll be selling our house to retire in a couple of years, and I feel confident that our place has tremendous "curb appeal" because of what I learned and implemented from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great primer, great pictures!.......2003-05-03

This is a really good first book on front yard gardens and has some excellent pictures. If you're thinking of adding a little life and color to your front yard, striving for some curb appeal or just plain tired of mowing the lawn, pick this up. Easy to read and written in a nice relaxed style, it's a good starter.

                    Book Description

Renowned garden designer Gordon Hayward's newest book focuses on one major principle: creating front-yard gardens that will inspire and invite, transforming neighborhoods and encouraging people to create compelling spaces in which to relax, visit with neighbors, and enjoy a natural space. A front garden should welcome, enliven, enrich, and engage. < BR>

                    3 out of 5 stars HAYWARD-Welcoming Garden.......2007-02-07

This is a decent edition, though I can't say it improves on Hayward's Your House, Your Garden or others in the field. The quality of the illustrations really varies, and some locations are redundant to YHYG. I was looking for advice about replacing my front lawn and wish I'd found more here. My top picks for garden design remain Natural Gardening in Small Spaces, by Noel Kingsbury; Front Yard Gardens, by Liz Primeau; and the Piet Oudolf books.

5 out of 5 stars Blueprints for Welcoming Front-Yard Combinations.......2006-07-28

"The new American garden means living and walking among plants, following a path from driveway to front door among ornamental grasses and Russian sage, talking with friends under apple and cherry trees at the front of the house." ~Gordon Hayward

Gordon Hayward's ideas can be incorporated into any style of garden. If you have a walkway to the front door or need to manage an especially large lawn, his ideas will create a beautiful nurturing space you will love coming home to.

The book is organized in a step-by-step design. You can see the complete design from a landscaper's viewpoint and then see the finished beauty in pictures. Some of the features include:

An Old Weathered House with a Cottage Garden
A Home Completely Surrounded by a Garden
A Small Garden around Big Front Steps
A Garden Running Straight to the Front Door (cover picture)
                    Sidewalk Garden
A Generous Sitting Area in a Small Front Garden
                    A Sunny Organic Garden

Each idea also has a special section of "Design Principles." The author explains the pictures so you gain a sense of how a designer thinks when planning out a new yard. There are many ideas to love and there is a good balance of creativity and practical solutions.

5 out of 5 stars Designing for the Front of the House.......2006-04-05

The tradition in the United States has been to have a fairly plain front yard and to put the emphasis on the back yard. If we think of the front yard at all, it's usually pretty bland. The chairs, the table, the fountain go in the back yard.

This book kind of turns that around. Here are gardens for the front of the house. Maybe that's where the view is, maybe you just want guests to feel welcome, maybe you don't have a back yard, maybe you just want the house to be a nice from the front as the back.

Gordon Hayward is an expert in garden design. Here he concentrates on the front yard. He features many of his own designs as well as designs from all around the country.

The book is broken into ten chapters that cover all aspects of designing a garden for the front yard. It begins with a discussion on style and then has a chapter on each major component such as driveways, walkways, the strip between the sidewalk and the street and so on.

Each of these chapters is beautifully illustrated with full color photographs. The result is a raft of ideas that you might use as you create your own design.

I checked this out of the library so many times that I finally desided to purchase a copy of my own. This book describes how to make your outdoor area more wildlife friendly from a small balcony to larger acreage. Although this book focuses mostly on attracting smaller animals such as birds and squirrles, it is still an excellent resource. The main requirements of wildlife are discussed: water, food and shelter. In addition, there are many items that you can build both to amuse yourself and provide something of value to the local wildlife. The projects are accompanied by clear illustrations and instructions. The photos would make the book worth the price on its own.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Edition of Old Syriac Inscriptions.......2001-03-27

This book represents the definitive edition of all the existing published Syriac inscriptions that are neither Jewish nor Christian. It replaces the small book of texts of a set of Old Syriac inscriptions that H. J. Drijvers provided in 1972 or so, with a more thorough presentation of every published inscription, as well some identification of those inscriptions that are in the process of being published. Plates or sketches, and sometimes both, are included for every inscription. For the text of each inscription, the editors offer transliteration, translation, and line notes. There is a fascinating series of inscriptions taken from mosaic floors of the third century, which represent families in their "house of eternity," or tomb. Having worked with all of these materials as presented, I am an unqualified admirer of the edition. It is not always completely neutral in evaluating previous editions; generally, however, the editors recognize that responsible people can disagree on the sense of an inscription. This is a very useful academic tool for understanding the third century milieu out of which Classical Syriac emerged. petersig@ccat.sas.upenn.edu

Crabcakes, James Alan McPherson's first book since his Pulitzer Prize-winning short-story collection Elbow Room, is a meditation on many topics. While McPherson figures prominently, the text is laced with recollections of other people, places, and times. Thus the story at the heart of the book--McPherson's decision to sell a Baltimore house he has owned for nearly 20 years, evicting his elderly tenant--is interwoven with reminiscences of a waiter on the Great Northern Railway, Baltimore street scenes, and a bittersweet set of instructions about what to do when stopped by police. Although it's almost impossible to characterize, Crabcakes is richly rewarding.

                            Book Description

With the same grace and lyrical precision that distinguish his vibrant short stories, James McPherson surveys the emotional upheaval of his last twenty-one years. From Baltimore, Maryland, to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Iowa and Japan, Crabcakes witnesses McPherson's confrontation with the past, and his struggle to make sense of it and to bind it, peacefully, to the present. His elliptical search for meaning -- and his ultimate understanding of what makes us human -- finds in Crabcakes a powerful and enduring voice.

5 out of 5 stars Crabcakes wasn't an easy read.......1999-12-02

I read Crabcakes almost right when it came out, because Jim McPherson is a writer I greatly admire, and because he was my teacher and friend at U of Iowa while I was there.

I used Crabcakes as a text in my Sophomore English class at U of I, and generally people had a negative reaction. It was slow, plodding, confusing, and over-philosophical. It was also obscure in meaning, place, and time. Some students refused to finish it, and others came to class angry that they couldn't understand it.

When I first read it these were my reactions as well. However, I decided to use the book in class because it eventually came to rest securely with only a handful of works that I didn't enjoy reading: stories I only came to appreciate later. Many of the most engrossing novels I've read don't have the staying power of some of the most difficult, and such has been the case with Crabcakes.

McPherson's often convoluted sense of pacing, and his involved sense of meaning (that spans cultures, continents, and languages) was a pretty big project to get through, but once I was finished I couldn't stop thinking about it for a long time.

This is the best of art, the kind of creative endeavor that puts me in awe--when someone has an intensely personal vision and manages to communicate it with such accuracy that, for a time at least, the world looks different.

                            I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars This book could have been better........1999-11-18

I did not enjoy this book to the fullest. I got confused about certain characters. I hated it. I could not get into the book for some reason. He should have had a dictionary in the back . So, that the reader could find defintions of certain words. Certain parts of the book were interesting but most of it was boring. I would not recommend this book to anyone at anytime. The book could have been better if it was well organized. He jumped from one subject to another, many times. That totally confused me. I wish the book was shorter also. I really didn't understand why he complained so much about everything. He stayed in his house forever. This seemed unusual for a writer of his caliber. I believe he was under much stress when he wrote this book. And that's why the book is not wrought reading. This is my opinion of the book only many others said that the book was great. That's probably because they understood him. Truly he was very unsuccessful when he wrote this book.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful imagery-ricochets from Baltimore to Osaka and back........1998-01-19

Crabcakes follows an action taken(McPherson's impulsive purchase of a Baltimore rowhouse at auction because he sympathisized with the plight of its tenants) through the unexpected results on his life for years afterwards. His reflections make you pause and consider ripple events in your own life. "Etiquette Necessary for Survival on Secondary Roads" is brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars A moving, illuminating memoir from a great American author........1998-01-13

James Alan McPherson, the author of two of the greatest short story collections of the postwar era, Hue and Cry (1969) and Elbow Room (1977) ends tewnty years of book silence with a moving, illuminating memoir of his journey from personal isolation to acceptance and understanding of community. We meet some memorable characters, Mrs. Channie Washington, the narrator's tenant, who always enclosed a small affirming note with the rent check, Ira Kemp, the dreamer and former co-worker of McPherson's as a railroad waiter in the early 60's, who became a lawyer and argued a case before the Supreme Court, Howard Morton, McPherson's neighbor, who looks out for him, while carrying for his own invalid son, and several Japanesse friends, who teach the author "religio," neighboring or binding. McPherson's quiet humor, dignity, and clear human insight make this a book of continual surprises, recognition and beauty. In answer to the question who in the world would you most like to have dinner and conversation with, some would say Thomas Jefferson, Einstein or Rembrant. My answer: I'd like to eat crab cakes with McPherson.
