Book Description
Blind magistrate Sir John Fielding investigates corruption and murder in the seaside town of Deal, which has become a haven for smugglers.
Customer Reviews:
I liked this book!.......2007-07-08
I love the Sir John Fielding series, and I thought this book was A1. It was a nice mixture of adventure, swashbuckling and murder. Jeremy Proctor is growing up to be a remarkable young man, and he is so straightforward and modest as he narrates the stories about the blind magistrate, Sir John Fielding. I thought the mystery was excellent. It moved swiftly and was nicely paced. And I loved the descriptions about the late 18th century ships and the smuggling trade which has gone on for centuries. I also love Alexander's characters. They are very real and fully-rounded. This is a top-notch series and I recommend it highly. It should be read in order though in order to get the full appreciation for Alexander's sense of time and place. The late 18th Century comes alive under his pen.
Another Welcome Visit from Sir John Fielding!.......2006-10-19
SMUGGLER'S MOON transplants the blind Bow Street magistrate from his beloved London to the coastal town of Deal where smuggling is rampant. The smugglers soon turn murderous and Sir John and his right-hand man, Jeremy Proctor, lead the battle to eradicate the evil-doers.
I haven't been reading the Sir John Fielding novels in order; this dates from 2001. While I didn't give it a five-star rating - it doesn't take a genius to guess who the villain is - I enjoyed the book nevertheless. There's enough twists and turns and rousing action to keep the reader's attention. Then too, the late Bruce Alexander had a wonderful eye for period detail and a corresponding ear for dialogue. There is a charming quaintness to the world evoked in the Fielding books - the language, manners, the sights, sounds and smells, etc.
If you're a Sir John Fielding fan, you'll enjoy this book. And like me, you'll probably finish the book with the hope that the next adventure returns him to his Bow Street haunts.
Just OK.......2003-10-27
Alexander's series about London magistrate John Fielding is, inexplicably, getting weaker with each passing book. It's as though he's running out of steam. This is the end of the line for me. The series was good for a while, but I'm moving on.
About the Same as The Others.......2003-09-30
Bruce Alexander's series of 18th century detective stories were sort of fun and interesting for a while there, but this is the eighth one and they're just not getting any better. Readers know from the outset who the bad guy is, so it's sort of like watching a Scooby-Doo episode and waiting for him to be unmasked. Alexander's writing is passable in a pop-fiction sort of way, but the plot is too thin and wooden and the characters too one-sided and predictable. Nothing is really happening in this series. I've read my last Alexander novel.
Smuggler's Moon.......2003-06-01
Really truly love or maybe I should have said loved this series. The adding of the charectar of Clarissa has turned me
off somewhat of the series. Why Alexander tinkered with what was a great series is a bit of a mystery to me in
itself. Maybe his editor felt like the series needed a Nancy Drew touch. It doesn't. Use to couldn't wait for the
next book in the series as they are so wonderfully written and would rate all the past books a five star. Oh, I will get the next book but not with the same excitement and anticipation as I had in the past.

arrived in ok condition, fast ship.......2005-09-20
arrived in slightly worse condition than expected, but arrived fast.
Rated PG-13 At Least..........2002-12-29
We purchased this book for our son for Christmas on a recommendation from someone else. However, the cover art is definitely not family-friendly, and a quick glance at the text revealed language that would be offensive to nearly any Christian. If the book were made into a movie, it would have a PG-13 rating at the very least, just on the basis of profanity. If language and nudity concern you, this book is not for you.
It Takes a Brilliant Mind...........2000-12-02
...To write a novel as hilarious as this one. I can't imagine how _Gnome Man's Land_ was ever allowed to go out of print; it's one of the most hysterical, unbelievable things I've ever read, and a book I find myself coming back to again and again. The characters, the plot, the parodies--all are priceless, and the message of the ending equally so. I have never seen anyone better than Friesner at delivering a moral without spoiling the spirit of a humorous story. Not only will the reader quite possibly be in tears from laughter, but he or she should come away from this book with a sense of having read something meaningful as well as entertaining.
Five stars aren't enough. I'd give this one ten if I could. If you can find a copy of _Gnome Man's Land_ anywhere, snap it up--and then hunt down the two sequels, _Harpy High_ and _Unicorn U._ They'll all be worth your wait!
Ow, my aching lungs!.......1998-10-11
Wow. Pure, nonstop comedy. Whether or not you're a comedy fan, you'll enjoy the skewering of traditional fantasy figures. Rarely does a book move me to laugh out loud, but Friesner is the best in the field.
One of the funniest fantasy novels I have ever read!.......1998-03-27
This novel is Friesner at her very best. A rift develops between here and the "other side" and the traditional spiritual companions of mankind are back in our world. These entitities spread out seeking humans of compatible ethnocultural backgrounds and move in with them. The protagonist, Tim Desmond, a teenager of Irish ancestry, is joined by a drop-dead gorgeous (and naked) Banshee. Tim's mother, of Russian descent, draws the attentions of a Bannik, the Russian spirit of the bathhouse. T'ing Hau Kaplan winds up with an Ancestral Spirit, a Mongol warlord named Bu, etc. Soon the world is elbow deep in lares, penates, leprechauns, kelpies, brownies, goblins, sprites and the like. The plot moves at a hell-bent-for-election pace, and Friesner's wry control of language has never been better.
Book Description
G.I., which is short for Glycemic Indexor blood-sugar indexmust be maintained at an optimal level for weight control and sustained energy levels. Author Barbara Ravage recommends prudent dietary habits as she focuses on the varying effects of different carbohydrates on blood-sugar levels. Readers who follow her guidelines will conclude that it's neither difficult nor disagreeable to substitute low GI-rated foods for others with higher ratings. For instance, she suggests pasta rather than potatoes, berry fruits rather than bananas, and wine rather than beer with meals. She also offers advice on cooking and processing foods for optimal GI ratings. Extensive charts list the GI ratings of everyday foods, specifying the grams of carbohydrates each serving yields. For easy reference, foods are grouped into types that include: breads and bread products; cereals and grains; cookies, crackers, and cakes; fruit and fruit juices; vegetables and legumes; rice and pasta; milk and dairy foods, sweets and chocolate; and drinks. Here's a wealth of no-nonsense information in a compact volume for health-conscious readers.
Customer Reviews:
This one really works!.......2007-07-04
I bought this book a year or two ago along with another GI book and read them both. It was easy to incorporate the plan into my nutritional activities, even though I did so half-heartedly. Within the past six months, people have been asking me if I was on a diet or if I had lost weight. I personally did not notice; the change of seasons and wardrobe switch precluded my observation from looser fitting clothes. After weighing myself, the scale showed that I lost 13 pounds by simply combining my foods properly and reducing the glycemic index. Unsolicited weight-loss made me feel uneasy, so for one month, I intentially ate high GI foods. This resulted in weight gain of approximately a pound a week; and this calmed my fears regarding a potentially pathologic cause of unsolicted weight loss. My daughter has been diagnosed with PCOS and needs to jump on board a full-blown GI guided nutritional plan. I will join her and it won't be difficult because the concept is simple. The only disadvantage could possibly finding the GI of foods. Huge databases of GI ratings are not yet available since the interest is relatively new. I have been told that the University of Sydney is performing ongoing GI testing of foods, and the database is available to online viewers. I have not tried it yet, but this is what I've been told. Glycemic index.......2007-04-01
This book is very important in learning what foods to eat to maintain a low yet healthy glucose load. Worth the cost. Great adjunct to anyone's health.
Good, but simplistic.......2006-03-14
I found this book to be a good introductory text. I was disappointed to find that the G. I. lists were not very extensive and did not include numeric values.
Excelent resource of nutritional information.......2006-03-14
Should be on everyone's bookshelf whether they are diabetic or not.
best reference for low carb diet.......2006-02-28
I bought this book after buying the Aitkens diet book, and found that it gave me more of a variety of foods to choose from. Not only have I lost just as much weight using this book, it is a handy reference for combining food groups to benefit your low carb diet. The g.i. guide is important if you seriously need to lower your weight and have health issues to deal with. I ordered three more of these books for friends who are also using them in their diet for daily reference, and they also find the information concerning the g.i. index an invaluable guide. The book has so much info and ideas for your diet, it is one of the best books you can buy.

As the carts roll by, a quick glance at the book will tell a jean gow choy bang (chive dumpling) from mong gwor bo deen (mango pudding), and demystify the contents of that bamboo steamer. With tips on restaurant etiquette and how-tos for everything from refilling the teapot to handling chopsticks, Dim Sum is yum yum for everyone.
Customer Reviews:
Great Dim Sum restaurant companion!.......2007-03-09
Though it isn't an all-inclusive encycolpedia of all things dim sum, It's a great portable primer, with many common favorites featured. It doesn't have my favorite custard bun in it (someday I'll find out what they're called...), but it pictures many of the items you usually find on the carts. It's great to have both a photo, a description, the characters and a shot at a pronunciation when you want to try something. A great help when broadening your cuisine horizons!
Great guide to dim sum.......2007-01-07
If you've never eaten China's famed tea lunch, dim sum, this is a great guide; if you're a fan of dim sum (touch the heart) this is a great guide! Pocket size with excellent brief descriptions and good pictures, this little book covers virtually all aspects of eating and enjoying dim sum and identifies the major types of food. This is a guide to understanding, eating and enjoying dim sum and is not a cook book.
excellent resource for non-Chinese dim sum enthusiasts.......2006-07-09
This little book packs so much information to help non-Chinese speaking dim sum lovers-- descriptions and photos of common ingredients and dishes along w/ both the Chinese names & pronunciations. It even covers the customs/etiquette of dim sum dining. I've seen it help even the most experienced dim sum enthusiasts. This probably goes without saying, but dim sum is a totally different experience when you can actually ask for things by name. And the book is small enough that you can hide it in your lap or under your leg, if you don't want to be completely obvious. Or, you can hold it out in full view and point to what you want.
Dim Sum.......2004-10-18
I bought this book at the check out counter as I was leaving the bookstore. I took it with me to China when I went to adopt my son two weeks later. I loved it and had so much fun with it. I was able to order all sorts of things. I was able to attempt Cantonese pronunciations and if all else failed I could point to the picture and characters. I loved the little book and it was so easy to tuck in my purse.

Book Description
THE HISTORY OF RETRIEVERS By Charles C. Eley A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT. Originally published in 1921, this is one of the earliest detailed works on Retrievers and Retriever Trials. It is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. Two hundred and sixteen pages contain seven detailed chapters:- The Flat-Coated Retriever. Early History. - The Flat-Coated Retriever. History. - The History of the Labrador. - The Labrador at Field Trials. - Curly-Coated and Golden Retrievers. - The Future of Retriever Trials by Captain Harry Eley. - A Record of Retriever Trials by Walter Baxendale. This is a fascinating read for any Retriever enthusiast or historian of the breeds, but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. "Men who shoot without dogs tire of sport early in life, whilst all who are fond of animals and of training them retain a long lasting pleasure in it." F.R. Bevan. 1891. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

For every bride (and her mother), The Knot Book of Wedding Flowers provides an invaluable and inspirational guide for planning a perfect storybook event--be it a private family affair or an all-out bash in a hotel ballroom. Author Carley Roney, editor-in-chief of The Knot online wedding planning site, which has branched out to offer this and other books (like The Knot's Complete Guide to Weddings in the Real World), provides extensive information, friendly advice, and helpful tips for brides of every budget. Special features of the book include beautifully illustrated glossaries of a wide variety of common wedding flowers as well as surveys of the various shapes and styles of bouquets, centerpieces, guest favors, and boutonnieres. How-to sections help the bride decide on her floral style and palette--deep red or purple flowers are popular modern choices, and of course all-white weddings remain perennially popular. Do-it-yourself instructions, clearly illustrated, help brides create their own flower decorations. And even brides with very deep pockets will appreciate the guide to choosing a florist, as well as the timeline planner and sample worksheets at the back of the book. Throughout, 150 glorious color photos seem practically fragrant. --Judy Fireman

Customer Reviews:
Informative on a basic level for brides-to-be.......2007-03-30
The first part of the book provides a list of favoured wedding flowers (with photos), and it gives a basic summary on their characteristics, seasonal availability and cost. The second part of the book contains a few DIY tips (not a lot) and a small gallery of centerpiece/bouquet designs, grouped by colors and themes.
The information in this book can be helpful for brides-to-be who are unfamiliar with the names of flowers, or what certain flowers look like. I personally think that the design examples are quite simple and unintimidating (ie. not flashy or over the top), and thus this book will be useful for brides who are looking for inspirations along those lines.
I recommend this book as a preliminary reference and it's a good start before meeting with your florist to discuss wedding flowers.
Not too exciting.......2007-03-07
I didn't find this book very exciting. I looked through it and there's really nothing in it that I can use. I was looking for ideas for my wedding bouquet and I really got NONE.
OK--but not the best.......2007-02-25
If you are looking for some floral tips and arrangement ideas, this book will help you with those ideas. However, if you are looking for an instructional book on how to make arrangements yourself, this book doesn't give enough information on this. (Yes, there is a small section in the book about making them yourself--but does not tell you how to make certain ones shown in the book). I would like a more informational--how-to-make boquet book. I might just have to write one myself!
The knot book of wedding flowers.......2007-01-20
I bought the book used, but it looked brand new. I was pleased.
Great basic guide for brides!.......2007-01-16
I found this book useful in that it was simple, straight forward guide to the most common flowers used in weddings. The first half is essentially a glossary of flowers. It provides basic information that made it easy to compare flowers: photo, meaning, colors available, when in season, and price range. The book also provides information on bouquet styles, color schemes, and flower arrangments, but I found the single flower photos most educational.
This book enabled me to have an intelligent conversation with my florist and narrow down which flowers I wanted for my wedding. I even took it along with me to discuss specific flowers with my florist.
I plan to lend it to all my friends for their wedding planning!

Customer Reviews:
A hefty and thorough bio of a micromanaging prelate.......2004-07-13
Future students of management, from any field, might find much here to enjoy. This biography, admittedly massive in its investigation of every detail extant of McQ's long career, never flags, even if not all the information is scintillating. I found the humanity of the "AB" touching at moments, against the stereotype that most hold him in today, and Cooney deftly weighs the harsh legacy which ultimately weakened the Church in Ireland against the struggles McQ faced personally and professionally as his ambition to become Cardinal and primate of All-Ireland never were fulfilled.
Surprising vignettes pepper the text. My two favorites: his rat-shooting skills and his questioning of clerics about what kind of underwear soldiers wore in the US Army. The sad dealings with sexual abuse do gain careful explanation here, even if the evidence IMHO is not air-tight, McQ's life does show the price paid for the Jansenist scruples inherited by his own Congregation and dictated to so many of the Irish people during his tenure. The struggles with DeValera over the Constitution of 1937 gain much scrutiny here, a very critical contributor to the social climate of mid-20c Catholic Ireland.
A fine resource for scholars and an accessible read for the rest of us too!
