Book Description

In the latest Homer Kelly mystery, Homer and his wife Mary are engaged in a steeplechase, a pursuit of a mysterious lost church. Chapters alternate between present and past, and slowly the events of 1868 in the town of Nashoba unfold as a disabled Civil War vet tries to get back to normal. Central to the story is a gigantic tree, the Great Nashoba Chestnut. And crucially intermingled with its fate are a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and the story of Three Billy Goats Gruff. In addition to the customary impeccable sleuthing, the author has provided numerous drawings and a number of nineteenth-century photographs.

5 out of 5 stars The past is a mystery.......2006-07-12

Jane Langton has tapped in to a great theme: that the past is itself a mystery. We can never truly know what happened during any historical event, large or small, global or personal. And the "truth" is relative and subjective.

Bouncing back and forth between 1868 and the present heightened the suspense, and raised a philosophical question: does it matter how a past event actually happened? If it is lost in the mists of time due to misplaced evidence, burned records, faded photos, then hasn't the event itself changed in some way? History only exists in our collective recorded memory. And that is a fluid existence indeed, subject to new findings, new biases, and the inevitable decay and loss of all evidence.

Homer and Mary can only uncover what is there to be found. The rest they attempt to fill in with their considerable insight into human nature. I appreciate their practicality. Mysteries of dirty deeds in church cloisters may be fascinating, but these two never ignore lunch, or love, or their fellow humans in the here and now. Great role models, since the here and now is all we have, after all.

1 out of 5 stars Homer is a mystery.......2006-04-08

I enjoy discovering a new series and had never read the "Homer Kelly" books. However,I had a hard time getting a handle on "Steeplechase." It went back and forth between Homer and Mary in the present day, to the 19th century. With short chapters, it was especially difficult to hold my interest in either the present or the past, especially since I was having a hard time getting a handle on who Homer and Mary were.
I understand there were many previous books in the series. However, an author should realize a reader may be new to the series and give background information on the main characters. This was not the case.
I follow a series when I am interested in the main character. However, character development was nil. Who are Homer and Mary??? After I read this book, I knew Homer was a professor at Harvard, over 6 feet tall, and his previous published book, which achieved little success, has had current interest and is now at the top of the best seller list. There was absolutely no further information on him and nothing about Mary, except that she was his wife and related to the 19th century characters. I don't even know what Homer taught or what his book was about. Hector is introduced in the first few pages. I never did find out who he was. Overuse of the word "whoopsie" made it sound like a children's book. Rather than "comedy" as a review described, it seemed silly. While the plot and symbolism in the 19th century part of the book could have been interesting, it was too late in the book to keep my interest.
I thought of reading earlier books in the series to see what it was about, but why bother. There are too many other books out there.

4 out of 5 stars Maybe the books in this series should be called Historical Mysteries ..........2005-12-26

... because Homer and Mary Kelly are always delving into interesting stories from the past. This time, Homer is working on a book about church steeples found in and around Concord, Massachusetts. His editor wants him to uncover titillating scandals in the process, but Homer isn't finding many. In alternate chapters, we drop back to 1868, where a dispute between two ministers and their families is brewing in Nashoba, not far from Concord. It begins with a chestnut tree and ends in the division of one congregation into two. Readers are encouraged to stick with the unfolding of the historical text; it takes a commitment of time to figure out which characters to focus on. Gradually we see that what happened back then is exactly what Homer Kelly was looking for all along. Perhaps the savviest of readers will even understand the symbolism of wounded soldier James Shaw's interest in Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities." We're given a lot to digest in these pages.

Langton is good at several things here: showing single events from the perspective of multiple characters' views, and making fiction seem like nonfiction. By the end of the book, I was so curious about the historical revelation that I was ready to drive along Route 2A in search of a church-turned-pizza parlor in Nashoba. Alas, my search would have been fruitless, for not only did the author fabricate the historical episode unveiled in "Steeplechase," she also placed it in a fictional town. I wanted it all to be true!

3 out of 5 stars Please give us back Homer & Mary....no more history!.......2005-11-08

I can understand that J. Langton wants to branch out, probably bored with Homer and Mary.

But I read her for Homer and Mary, not history.

If she wants to write history, she should start a new series, not disappoint Homer and Mary fans.

I picked up this book at the bookstore, flipped it open to see more "history," and said outloud, "Oh, no." I did buy it, but was very disappointed and will wait for this kind of book to come to the library next time.

What I do is skim the history and read the parts with Homer and Mary.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining intelligent mystery .......2005-10-25

Harvard Professor Homer Kelly has the New York Times number one nonfiction seller, Hen & Chicks. His editor demands he write a follow-up immediately so he can stay on top while the iron is hot. Homer works on his next tome Steeplechase, a look at the historical churches of New England. His wife Mary persuades him to begin the treks starting in Concord and eventually nearby Nashoba. They will find post Civil War aerial photos by the Pratt brothers that showcase a church steeple and a great chestnut tree in Nashoba; while the steeple seems to have vanished without any references besides the pictures, the tree remains standing today.

In 1868 Nashoba, disfigured veteran James Jackson Shaw comes home wanting to simply die. He refuses to see any of his friends and barely tolerates the care of his wife Isabelle and his in-laws including Reverend and Mrs. Gideon. At the same time, Eben Fleet wants Isabelle as his while Ella Viles desires Eben. These disjointed relationships will collide near the Nashoba Chestnut tree that magnificently stands by the First Parrish Church.

In the shadows of Longfellow, STEEPLECHASE alternates chapters so that the audience sees the real events of 1868 vs. the Kelly interpretation of those same activities. This makes for an intriguing historiographic look at how each generation re-interprets the past. Though the 1868 saga is more gripping than the current times fans of a thought provoking, yet very entertaining intelligent mystery will appreciate the latest Homer Kelly thriller.

    4 out of 5 stars Odd.......2005-10-19

It's odd that nobody has written a review on this book yet. I actually bought this as a collection to my Robotech/Macross stuff. I was curious to see how the story would pan out, but was really dissappointed find the print so small. I believe they took the original Comico series and tidied it up to fit in this new graphical novel format. The story is completely inline with Macek's original idea. However, compared to the more recent Yune releases, I must say that the artwork is meteocre. But because so much story takes place in this book, I do recommend it.

I'm still awaiting the day that TokyoPOP releases the original Macross Graphic Novel by Big West. The characters are for sure to look more like the original character designs of Macross.

5 out of 5 stars The most fantastic book I have ever read-you MUST get the cookbook too, though!.......2007-07-09

The first time I went on this way of eating (it is NOT a diet) I lost 44 pounds. I felt SO much better! It is a way of eating for the rest of your life. You must be very dedicated and diligent in keeping on this way of eating as you make everything. Fresh vegetables, fruits, homemade breads with flours from the health food stores, that are buckwheat, rice, etc. that have no wheat gluten or yeast in them. It is so worth it, though. Illnesses that you have just disappear! I would recommend this book to anyone that has been sick for a long time, and doctors tell them that it is in their "head", which is what I was told. Or, people with high colesterol, high blood pressure, and many other ailments. I HIGHLY recommend this book! I also strongly suggest that you get the cookbook along with this one, as it has a lot of great different receipes to cook from!

        1 out of 5 stars Quaaaaak.......2007-06-10

If eating nutritional yeast supplements (dead) or yeasted bread (dead) could cause totally unrelated species of yeast (c albicans, living) to overbloom on your body, this would be a scientific watershed, and this finding would have appeared in a peer-reviewed scientific journal instead of a self-help book written at the third-grade level without citations, evidence, and plans for further research.

This book encourages readers to think that they can control a virtually unlimited range of maladies by applying a one-size-fits-all quack cure. It thus discourages readers from getting safe and effective help from real healthcare professionals.

I believe this shows an utter lack of ethics on the part of the author.

Readers would be better served by reading a history of medical science (e.g. The Cambridge Illustrated History of Medicine) or an introduction to critical thinking (e.g. The Power of Critical Thinking: Effective Reasoning About Ordinary and Extraordinary Claims).

5 out of 5 stars Whoa! Get me off this hellish emotional rollercoaster..........2007-03-08

This book opened my eyes to the evil that moldy/yeasty/sugary foods can do to the body. Don't get me wrong, I still struggle with sugar addiction, BUT this book was the first to make me see how all the emotional turmoil I experience each month could be eliminated or minimized with the help of the M E V Y diet (Meat, Eggs, Vegetables, Yogurt). It is amazing how cloudy thinking, mood swings, energy levels, skin, could all be related to something as simple as sugar, but there your are. Thanks to you William G. Crook!

        5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-01-19

i bought the book and learned a lot from it... i followed some of the steps in the book and realized how effective removing certain things from your daily diet has a remarkable affect on the body. i would recommend reading it and using it as a guide to what you wish to achieve... even following some of the steps helped me.

        1 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me.......2006-03-25

First of all, I didn't think the book was very well written - it needed much tighter editing. Many points are repeated over and over again, and I found several typos. It is also heavily aimed at Americans with poor diets.

However, I did it, although I had to go to 3 doctors to find someone who would prescribe the necessary drugs, and then only reluctantly. I have just finished 6 months on it and am going to stop now. It has helped none of my health problems, and I have in fact had new fungal rashes develop while I was doing it. The food restrictions make it very hard to lead a normal social life.

According to his questionnaires, I am a prime candidate for candidiasis, but this treatment did not make any difference. No harm in trying it, but don't put too much hope into it.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Guide to Yeast.......2006-07-10

This book is packed with information on yeast overgrowth, symptons, rememdies, and meal plans. I found it very helpful in learning what yeast does to your body, how you develop candida, and how to stop the cycle.

        5 out of 5 stars Help, finally!.......2006-04-01

This book has been a lifesaver for me! After 7 years of suffering from a myriad of symptoms, going from doctor to doctor, with no resolution to my problems, I finally got some relief after reading this book. Little did I know, all my symptoms were related to one root cause: systemic candidiasis. After doing some research on the internet, I was led to this book. I had seen several recommendations for it, and excellent reviews. This book will help you to confirm what is happening in your body, and give specific steps you can take to start treating yourself to feel better. I have been putting Dr. Crook's suggestions into practice for a little over a month now and I feel so much better! So far, I have only been able to use homeopathic remedies - no prescription drugs - and have noted a marked improvement in my general health and well-being. I highly recommend this book to anyone who suspects they have a systemic yeast infection.

5 out of 5 stars Good place to start.......2005-08-12

I agree, to a point, with the reviewers who didn't find this book to have all the answers, BUT like another reviewer pointed out, this should be just one of the books in your library. I have suffered from candida for more than 20 years. If the reviewer who claimed that candida was invented by the author had suffered from it, then (s)he would know that it is very real and can be, for some people, debilitating. I suggest you check this book out of the library before you buy it. If you are well versed in this disease, then you might not want to buy it... but if you are just starting your research, you'll find a lot of answers in here.

5 out of 5 stars This is required reading for anyone who wants genuine.......2002-03-16

quality of life and medical care.

This book has really been a turning point in my own health trials and trevails and I applaud Dr. Crook and his confederates for persisting despite the typical reaction of the public in rejecting that which is not add water and mix. And yet, this is as simple as that in many ways.

I also enjoyed Proof Positive and really think that if Dr. Nedley could explore the yeast connection he would really have a very well rounded book because Dr. Crook has not ignored the very real and pervasive danger of chemicals and their deleterious effect on us humans and it's correlation to yeast problems.

Highly recommended reading for the intelligent and open minded.

This comprehensive work has been considered a classic ever since it was first published nearly three decades ago. Mrs. Kuo, a master chef and veteran restaurateur, clearly explains the basic techniques of Chinese cuisine, enabling her readers to understand how and why they are utilized. The more than 300 recipes, which range from simple everyday dishes to banquet creations, are imbued with the "teaching presence" of the author. Although many volumes on the subject have appeared over the years, "The Key to Chinese Cooking" still remains an essential resource.

Also recommended: "The Complete Asian Cookbook," by Charmaine Solomon.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Chinese Cookbooks-get this one!.......2006-02-19

My book is from 1977, and I have photocopied recipes to give to others, as it's still out of print.

I like it's treatment of each recipe..A recipes may start with background history, the ingredients are next, and the directions are very clear, telling you how to cook by knowing when a "cooking stage" is met, that is, when something is browned, another is blackened..it isn't just a "2 minutes" and on to the next stage.
Substitutions are listed, and the recipes do not have an excessive number of ingredients, so a trip to a regular grocery store, and an infrequent visit to an Asian store are all that's needed.

Ms Kuo gives many cooking "pearls" among the many recipes...these are helpful in French, or Argentinian cooking for example, not just limited to Chinese/Asian cooking. Even hints on how to reheat leftovers the next day is given...nice!

Get this for a great introduction to ways to cut and prepare foods, and learn in the opening chapters much about cooking in oil, cooking in liquids, and cooking with dry or wet heat.

It has recipes with Szechuan peppercorns...which were "outlawed" until just 2005, so Chinese afficionados will be delighted to have one more "real" ingredient to cook with. Get the "seeded" rather than the "whole" ones, as she points out "the flavor and the aroma come only from the petal-like husks". (The seeds are gritty and undesireable.)

When mincing or chopping, she recommends wetting the cleaver's blade to keep food from sticking...she has a chapter just on the different ways to cut, tenderize, chop...just about any food! Makes one realize why many chefs prefer just a medium weight cleaver for 95% of their work, over an array of varied specialized shaped knives.

This book had over 500 pages of great recipes and wonderful instruction...buy this...this is a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the Best Chinese Cookbook Ever Written.......2004-06-06

The eleven other reviews of this remarkable book (as of early June, 2004) all give this book 5 stars, an equally remarkable achievement. As one of those eleven people said, this is truly the Julia Child of Chinese cookbooks. I've been using it now since 1978 and there are still hundreds of recipes I haven't tried because the ones that I *have* cooked are so wonderful that I go back to them time after time. Most of the recipes are reasonably simple, with ingredients that can be found in even the most modest Asian market, or even in a Safeway these days, but some of them are a lot easier to make if you live in San Francisco (as I did for a number of years) and can find *everything* she calls for without undue trouble.

If I were marooned for life on a well-stocked desert island, this would be one of my two cookbooks, Julia being the other one. As wonderful as Italian food is, and as great as Marcella Hazen's Italian cookbook is, Chinese cuisine (with its many regional diversities) is far richer and with far more subtleties -- only French cuisine is its equal. Haunt the used book stores, or on-line sources, and try to get this unparalleled book.

5 out of 5 stars How I learned to cook Chinese.......2002-02-18

In the mid-eighties I had a job that allowed me to get home at 5pm. I used Irene Kuo's book to learn to cook Chinese. Not only are the recipes great, but the book is highly educational. I found it particularly useful to shop for the right ingredients.
Oneof my favorites is crab and corn soup. Overall, it's one of my "top 10 all time" cookbooks.

5 out of 5 stars Best, most authentic, very thorough Chinese cookbook.......2002-01-29

... I was thrilled to find a used copy. I have been making the food from my Chinese childhood, and yes, the recipes make dishes that taste exactly how I remembered everything. Her instructions are clearly-written and concise.

The number of corals imported into the U.S. rose 249 percent between 1995 and 1996, an indication the coral reef hobby is booming. Concerned hobbyists have begun growing corals domestically so that people can enjoy reef tanks without destroying natural reefs. This book combines information on setting up and maintaining a reef, as well as ecological concerns.

5 out of 5 stars Brief and easy to understand but very well explained.......2004-12-08

I first bought this book because of the author. When I recived it and thumbed through the pages I concluded that it was a book for beginners. In any case, since I had already spent 11 bucks I thought what the heck, if I could get at least one good idea out of it it will be worth the time and money.

I was delighted to find the clearest explanations I've ever read on aquariun systems. I have a much better understanding now. I also picked up some very useful tips.

Fantastic book. Very clear, easy to understand but detailed explantions of complex systems.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginning Reef Starter Book.......2003-12-01

This is a great book to ease your way into learning about the reef. It uses simple and scientific verbage to teach the basics about the coral reef. I love it, read it twice, and will read it again. :)

                3 out of 5 stars Too Simplistic.......2003-04-09

I was disappointed by this book.

For one thing, this is a very small book. It has only about 100 pages on a 4 X 8 size paper. And most of it is occupied by photos. But I also have to accept the fact that this book is much cheaper pricewise than the other comprehensive books out there such as the one by John Tullock.

So in view of its shortness, the subject of coral reef keeping is not covered comprehensively. There is very little in depth explanation of the equipment and the biology of the hobby. As a rough comparison, most of the other coral keeping guides are more than 400 pages long.

Coral reef keeping is an advanced subject (as opposed to marine fish keeping), and the equipment are varied, from lights, filtration, skimmers, chemical additives, chillers, etc. Each of these subjects is covered in a couple of paragraphs, as opposed to pages.

A beginner will not have enough advice to start a new tank error-free, while a more advanced hobbiest will not be satisfied with its simple explanations.

There are much better books out there.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book if you want a great start!.......2001-11-15

This was the first book I've purchased as I was recommended by various hobbyist whom I have lots of respect for. When I started reading this book, first thing I told myself "Wow, how little I knew". I would highly recommend anybody who is getting started with Reef Hobby. Dr Ron is not only an experienced (PhD) Marine Biologist, but an active participant/contributor in various related Forum, Magazine and so on.

On a different note, I would like to respond to the reader from Kingston, MA. Bristle Worms are your friend :p . They are mostly scavengers and will be a great member of your cleanup crew. There are some cases where aquarist found bristle worm gorging on their favorite fish, but the truth behind that almost always is, your fish died of other reason and Bristle Worm really doing its job, cleaning it up for you. If you have a super huge Bristle Worm, you may or may not choose to relocate it. Happy Reefing.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for those just entering the hobby.......2001-09-29

I fell into reef aquarium ownership almost overnight. I didn't know what I was getting into and bought an established 140 gallon tank with rocks and fish. The second hand tank had been neglected and there were only 3 surviving fish and the rock didn't look too healthy. I had no idea what I was headed into and I bought and killed a number of beautiful, expensive fish out of total ignorance.

This book would have not only saved me a lot of money, but a lot of headache, heartache and trips to the local fish store.

Dr. Shimek includes tips on inexpensive ways to equip the hardware and contents w/o spending an arm and a leg on overpriced items at the store. He tells you what animals to avoid (especially for beginners) and which ones are must-haves.

For a beginning book, it is packed w/ info in just over 125 pages and in a very affordable package. Most aquarium books are VERY expensive and you'll never read the whole thing.

I read this book in about 2 weeks (I work full time and I'm a slow reader) by taking it with me during my lunch hour and it has already saved me hundreds of dollars in items/livestock I was considering on purchasing.

My only criticism is the lack of photos of critical things the author was citing. There are tons of high quality photos in this book, but some creatures were mentioned that I would have like to have seen represented in a photo and still have no idea what the author was talking about.

The author does assume some knowledge in some areas where it seems he may have forgotten his audience. Had I not already dealt w/ some issues during my "baptism by fire" experience of learning the hard way for months before buying this book, I wouldn't have understood some of the concepts he brought up.

This book was one of the best purchases I've made in regards to aiding my hobby. Thank you, Dr. Ron!

3 out of 5 stars Good for getting started but becoming outdated.......2001-02-19

Mr. Consalvi's book was a godsend when I first started to determine the values of my Steiff teddy bears. However, we are now in the year 2001, and the book is in danger of becoming outdated with regard to its price guides and the values of Steiff collectibles. Additionally, many new bears and animals have been made since 1990 but are not included in this edition, except for the Disney animals up to 1995.

A new, revised and up-to-2000 or 2001 3rd edition needs to be released ASAP.

In the meantime, puzzled Steiff collectors should look for a copy of "Steiff Sortiment 1947-1999" by Gunther Pfeiffer. ("Sortiment" here means "Assortment".) When used in conjunction with Mr. Consalvi's book, both provide a comprehensive look at Steiff's many world-famous toys, both old and new, but Pfeiffer's price guides are accurate up to 1999. Also, the new "Sortiment" has (at last!) an English translation from the German, making it much easier to locate your Steiff bear or animal.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite the best.......2000-10-30

I am fairly new to collecting Steiff and found this book was caught between the begginer and slightly more ecperienced collector. Some very good pictures and an in depth price guide which could have been just a little better organised. Several Steiff pieces that I looked for I couldn't find, I am not sure if it because they were made outside the time scale for this book. I would say a good addition and informative although I am back here at Amazon looking for something better.

5 out of 5 stars A Wish Book for Contemporary Steiff Collectors.......1999-12-17

This is a great reference book for contemporay Steiff collectors. It focuses on the 1980-1990 Steiff pieces, their editions & values, photos.

I really enjoyed the book. It was laid out in a straight forward manner, and I can see why do many have purchased this book over the years.

Baker's book trades on simplicity and practicality and in that respect reminded me of Haley's Hints. Haley's Hints

I recommend this book to anyone with a love of gardening or think they may have it within themselves to develop a love of gardening.

I started using this book in mid summer and so far I have been amazed. I purchased a house that had nothing but weeds in the back yard. I hired someone to get rid of the weeds and all they did was kill what little grass there was. A friend gave me The Impatient Gardener and I started doing what it recommended and now I have a yard full of grass. My next door neighbor came over to find out what I had done to make the grass grow. I plan on giving her the book for Christmas.

This is a super book that will give you common sense, easy step methods to the best looking lawn and landscape around. We moved into a new house that had no grass or landscaping when we moved in. Three weeks later, we had neighbors stopping by our house to find out what our secret was to starting and KEEPING grass growing in our difficult to grow clay front yard. This book contains basic fundamentals on pruning, manicuring, and how to's on picking the right grass and ingredients for your lawn.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Has many helpful tips if not a systematic guide.......2004-05-17

This book is not a detailed lawn program for lawn care. It is more or less a collection of articles and tips on lawn care. I certainly found many useful tips and helpful advice as I read through the book. However, in reading it front to back you will find that Mr. Baker differs in some small details from one presentation to the next, but his overall conception of what goes into a good lawn remains quite consistent throughout.

Mr. Baker offers several of his famous tonics that I look forward to trying. Some of the advice seems a tad dated - he talks about buying things from Brookstone that aren't offered on their website anymore and he doesn't mention his own website www.jerrybaker.com that does offer many of them and more.

The book discusses different types of grass and weeds, but doesn't offer much in the way of pictures. There are books that do and I find the pictures of the weeds very helpful in identifying them. But this book does offer state-by-state help on certain things and resources you can tap to get more information - very helpful.

This book is certainly worthy the price I paid for it and I like the tips I picked up. It isn't perfect, but deserves a place on your shelf.

5 out of 5 stars The greenest grass imaginable.......2000-05-26

I bought this book for my husband. He follows it faithfully, and you can see the results in our yard. We have the most beautiful, lush grass in the neighborhood - which seems to be a miracle, since our yard was an overgrown field just two years ago. Jerry Baker provides simple ways to establish and maintain your lawn. I also appreciate the fact that we do not have to go to a gardening store to find the items recommended in his book.

3 out of 5 stars It might be easier to be green than you think!.......1999-10-22

I'm sure my fellow gardeners have noticed how a nicely tended strip of grass sets off a garden bed perfectly! Designers say our eyes need a place to rest before we can see all the beauty in front of us. Although most people make their New Years resolutions in December or January, I promise myself every July I am going to do something about my grass.....something other than dig it all up. We've all seen Jerry Baker on television spraying ammonia and dish soap all over his yard...I find it very intriguing. Jerry's book on lawn care has a ton of info to offer..and true enough it is a little hard to follow sometimes, but most people will not do everything anyway. For my poor lawn anything is an improvement, so if you are task-oriented, schedule based and really really care about your lawn this book should be very helpful. There are a lot of chemicals included in the regimen so beware if you like me avoid them. But there is a lot here that will be used on my own little patch of soon to be healthier grass. If you want more details, reviews of other gardening books or simple little garden musings.

4 out of 5 stars Good (albeit inconsistent) advice; your lawn will improve........1999-09-22

After reading through this book twice, highlighting various tips and tidbits, I realized that I couldn't put it all together into one organized plan. So I went through the book a third time, taking notes, and trying to categorize the author's advice. Guess what? It's not possible. This how-to book IS very disorganized, and worse, internally inconsistent. However, I concluded that if I just took a stab at using parts of his advice, formulas, when-to's, etc., that my lawn would probably improve. It did. No question. I like the fact that his methods are easy and inexpensive. I got much better results than I did with my previous 6x/year TrueGreen lawn service for $250. If you're interested in understanding what your lawn wants, this book has the advice if you're willing to sift through the disorganization.

3 out of 5 stars Good information but very disorganized.......1999-07-19

General information is good. Jerry writes about everything from lawn equipment, watering, home to homemade tonics. However, the book is very disorganized. Jerry did a very poor job of summarizing the steps to a great lawn.

This book provides good ideas for things to do in many areas of your garden. Unfortunately it does not identify which plants are suitable for each region. In Southern California, for example, very specific plants are appropriate for the climate and precipitation. It would be helpful to link the information to a zone reference, e.g. the Sunset Western Garden Book.

                          Book Description

Brill's New Pauly is the English edition of the authoritative Der Neue Pauly, published by Verlag J.B. Metzler since 1996. The encyclopaedic coverage and high academic standard of the work, the interdisciplinary and contemporary approach and clear and accessible presentation have made the New Pauly the unrivalled modern reference work for the ancient world.

Five volumes (Classical Tradition, I-V) are uniquely concerned with the long and influential aftermath of antiquity and the process of continuous reinterpretation and revaluation of the ancient heritage, including the history of classical scholarship. Special emphasis is given to the interaction between Greco-Roman culture on the one hand, and Semitic, Celtic, Germanic, and Slavonic culture, and ancient Judaism, Christianity, and Islam on the other hand.

Brill's New Pauly presents the current state of traditional and new areas of research and brings together specialist knowledge from leading scholars from all over the world. Many entries are elucidated with maps and illustrations and the English edition will include updated bibliographic references.

Just as he skillfully deconstructed the Black Panthers in his groundbreaking The Shadow of the Panther, Hugh Pearson presents in Under the Knife a familial tale of a different kind of black power that evades our most ingrained social clichés. Pearson's uncle, Dr. Joseph Griffin, lived in segregated Georgia and moved up the socioeconomic ladder by secretly performing abortions and treating the sexually transmitted diseases of the white folks in his community. When they couldn't pay up, the good doctor extorted property deals from them! He also hired down-and-out blacks as butlers and chauffeurs and was a pillar in the Negro community (in a Robin Hood fashion). Pearson blends fact with rural fiction as he shows how African Americans in the era before the civil rights movement were sometimes able to outsmart the bigoted whites who, in a cosmic twist of fate, depended on them when the chips were down. --Eugene Holley Jr.

                            Book Description

Hugh Pearson grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana, encouraged by his parents to believe that nothing was beyond his reach. If he needed any further inspiration, he could look to his great-uncle, Dr. Joseph Griffin. Although Griffin had stayed in the Deep South, he managed to become a pillar of his community at a time when Afro-Americans -- then called Negroes -- rarely prospered. He became the first Negro surgeon in south Georgia, donating millions of dollars to Afro-American institutions and building the largest private hospital for Afro-Americans in the State. Griffin inspired Louis Sullivan, who later became President Bush's Secretary of Health and Human Services, to go into medicine and a young Hosea Williams, who grew up to be one of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s most trusted aides, to aspire to be someone important. He served as a father figure to Donald Hollowell, the lawyer who became a mentor to Vernon Jordan and earned the nickname Georgia's "Mr. Civil Rights" for his legal battles on behalf of Martin Luther King, Jr., and other activists.

In Under the Knife, Pearson embarks on a personal journey to learn more about his great-uncle and the rest of the men in his family. What he has uncovered are cold truths about the moral complexities of success and power in a racist society. His uncle's fortune was largely built on performing backdoor abortions for women of all colors, on treating sexually transmitted diseases in Caucasian men too embarrassed to seek help from their regular doctors, and on coercing donations of property from many patients when they couldn't afford to pay their medical bills.

Pearson concludes that the same drive and willingness to bend the rules that helped men like John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J. P. Morgan become wealthy and powerful in less enlightened eras were just as necessary in an ambitious Afro-American man like his great-uncle, who faced a far more difficult path. Pearson discusses his great-uncle's relationships with southern Jews who befriended him and uncovers the buried history of Afro-American physicians in the Jim Crow era. He dramatizes the struggles of other successful men in his family, charting his forefathers' rise from slavery to ownership of large Georgia farms and flourishing businesses in Jacksonville, Florida, and the accomplishments of his own father, who became the first person of any color in his rural Georgia county to earn a medical degree.

With Under the Knife, Hugh Pearson brings to life the pains and triumphs, as well as the ambiguities and fortitude, involved in the rise of middle-class and wealthy Afro-Americans, and restores the true legacy of an overlooked and oversimplified part of the American experience.

5 out of 5 stars Sensational piece of work.......2002-03-02

Its been a long time since I've read a book that truly captivated and held my attention like "Under the Knife".
Brother Pearson has done the community and humanity a service
with his very real portrayl of the the south and the way in which African-American physicians went through, around and over
discrimination. As an AA physician myself,I read and absorbed the words in this scholarly tome in a much different light than perhaps the average non-physician reader. It was enlightening,

refreshing and down to earth. And lastly, I appreciate Hugh's
avoidance of the usual thou does no wrong image that is often
cast upon our AA heroes. They are "great" men and women who deserve all the praise and glory due each and every one of them,
BUT they are human - and the admiration is even greater when we do not deprive them of this fact.Brother Hugh continue to write

Hugh Pearson wrote a painfully honest discussion of that which he uncovered as he took a personal journey to learn how his great-uncle, Dr. Joseph Griffin, 'a wealthy negro surgeon, wielded power in the Jim Crow south.' I both enjoyed and was disturbed by this excellent look back at a grim era in our collective past. Mr. Pearson shares with his readers the pride as well as the conflict he felt upon learning the extremes to which Dr. Griffin chose to resort to fulfill his dreams and aspirations.

Mr. Pearson's style of writing is refreshingly straightforward and in-your-face honest. I was particularly impressed with his impressions of the connection between the Jewish community and the Black community (long an interest of mine,) which haunted him throughout his journey.

In a convoluted way, the story was inspiring. Dr. Griffin went to many lengths and used any means possible to attain wealth, and subsequently power, in an age when power was unattainable to southern Blacks. As the real means of attaining power (education, real estate ownership, political involvement and money) are still out of the reach of many black Americans today, we must ask ourselves how--if at all--have things changed since the days of Dr. Griffin?

I strongly recommend this book to any student of history who would appreciate an accounting of the Jim Crow era, from its last remaining survivors.
