“B” Is for Burglar

“C” Is for Corpse

A good intro to the series.......2007-07-27
First off, excellent reading.
About the stories, they are fine, well writen books. Kinsey Milhone is a female PI in a small costal California town who takes on a series of murders in these three books. Better written than most of the series murder mysteries.
First Time Audio Book Customer.......2006-08-18
This collection was my first ever audio book and I have already ordered more. The reader uses a variety of voice changes, emotions and just the right amount of pauses to add to the suspense and enjoyment of listening. I hope to get the whole alaphabet!

Book Description
The Prodigal Troll is a tale of a human child raised by a band of mythological creatures that is both hysterical and moving.
When Lord Gruethrist¹s castle is laid under siege by an invading baron, he sends a trusted knight and nursemaid off with his infant son. Their escape across a wilderness landscape populated by fantastic creatures and torn by war takes unexpected turns until the baby is finally adopted by a mother troll grieving for her own lost child. Christened "Maggot" by a hostile stepfather, the human boy grows up amid the crude but democratic trolls until he leaves the band to rediscover the world of humankind.
But the world of man is a complex and capricious place. Maggot must master its strange ways if he is to survive... let alone win the heart and hand of the Lady Portia.
Finlay's society of trolls are unlike any you've ever read before, and his matriarchal medieval world, pitted as they are against an analog of Native American tribesmen, provides a rich setting for many poignant social and political insights.
Customer Reviews:
Boy raised as troll, with honest and original variations.......2006-05-13
Charles Coleman Finlay's The Prodigal Troll is expanded from some previously published short stories. A couple appeared in F&SF, and one interesting one appeared in Black Gate. This last, "The Nursemaid's Suitor", is actually the first part of the novel, but slightly -- though very significantly -- changed. As Finlay notes, it's the story that he would have told if the story was meant to be about the nursemaid and her suitor, rather than about Claye/Maggot, the actual protagonist of the novel.
In a fairly standard (but nicely presented) medievaloid fantasy world, Lord Gruethrist's domains are, at the open, taken over by an ambitious rival. Or, I should say, Lady Gruethrist -- in this world, all land is owned by women. Men fight wars and otherwise act for their wives, but only women can own property. Well, women and eunuchs (who are addressed as "she" and "her".) Lord and Lady Gruethrist have an infant son, Claye, and he has detailed one of his best warriors to help the child's nursemaid to escape to safety. The warrior in question, it turns out, has an unrequited passion for the nursemaind. But on their escape they learn that the situation is more dire than they expected -- it seems the political winds blow entirely against Lord Gruethrist, and all his allies are either dead or subverted. They try to make a home in an deserted cottage, but come to grief -- however, the child survives, because he is adopted by a troll.
Trolls, it seems, are an endangered humanoid species, living in the mountains. Claye, now called Maggot, is raised as a troll, but his differences soon become apparent. His good heart and intelligence serve him in good stead, against the suspicions of the dwindling bands of trolls -- victims of human incursion and their own inflexibility. Eventually Maggot comes out of the mountains, where he sees a woman who completely entrances him. Much of the rest of the novel concerns his fumbling attempts to attract her attention, leading to involvement in a human war, and eventually in corrupt human politics. The resolution involves some expected but satisfying coincidences, and an honest and not standard conclusion -- which quite effectively closes the novel's story but leaves open the possibility (but not necessity) of sequels.
Imaginative and original........2006-02-21
Charles Coleman Finlay's debut fantasy novel, The Prodigal Troll, shines in its compelling and powerfully imaginative treatment of dissonant cultures in conflict. Finlay manages to do well in a single piece what so many fantasy authors cannot, even in the multiple-volume sagas currently in vogue: weave a rich tapestry of hitherto unknown cultures and tell a damn good story to boot. Prodigal Troll neither takes on the creation of all the minutiae of an entire world, nor does it expound at excruciating length on the politics and economics of numerous kingdoms and empires with unpronounceable names.
An empire expanding its borders invades a wide and fertile valley, the territory of a tribal people. Technologically and militarily advanced, the empire inevitably pushes the tribes to the fringes of the mountains beyond the valley. However, the conquest completed, the center of the empire now seeks to curb the autonomy of the periphery, in particular the conquering hero Lord Gruethrist. Knowing that he cannot resist directly, Gruethrist plans to take to the hills as a rebel, hoping eventually to force a favorable settlement. There is one problem with this plan; Gruethrist's infant son, Claye.
With imperial forces besieging his castle, Gruethrist entrusts Claye to a knight and a nursemaid. These guardians slip away in the night with the infant, but before they can reach safety, they meet their deaths in the wild hills. A mother troll, grieving over the death of her infant daughter, finds Claye and adopts him as her own child. Claye grows into manhood among the mountain-dwelling trolls. When he desires to take a mate, however, his otherness leads him down from the mountains toward the settlements of men, just as the tribes begin to chafe again at the ascendancy of the invaders.
Jacket blurbs compare Prodigal Troll to LeGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness and Burrough's Tarzan stories. Perhaps these are apt comparisons, perhaps not, given some similar themes and plot devices; but Finlay brings his own strong, confident style to bear upon these themes. The fan of LeGuin and the fan of Burroughs should not expect to find a merely concurrent voice in Finlay. The Prodigal Troll works well enough on its own merits.
Although The Prodigal Troll is Finlay's debut novel, he can hardly be considered a newcomer. Finlay has contributed numerous short stories to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Accordingly, this novel-length work demonstrates a mastery of style and composition too often lacking in freshmen authors. At times, it is true, the prose becomes somewhat heavy-handed, with metaphors hitting the reader over the head like a giant hammer wielded by a giant hammering the reader over the head. These instances come few and far between. More often, thankfully, Finlay's writing approaches beauty, sometimes inspired, sometimes inspiring.
If there is a serious weakness in Prodigal Troll, it would be found at the ending. Without spoiling the book, it must suffice to say that Finlay concludes the book in an abrupt manner. The actions and motivations of the characters at this point do not entirely make sense. However, the ending works better by remembering that the opening scene of the novel belongs, chronologically, at the conclusion, and by assuming that Finlay sets up a sequel by ending The Prodigal Troll in this way.
coming of age fantasy .......2006-02-13
The invaders overwhelm Lord Gruethrist's castle. However before they complete their assault, Gruethrist assigns brave knight Yvon and trusted nurse Xarragitte to take his infant son Claye to his grandmother's home. The two day trek is filled with danger as both adults are exhausted and much that is dangerous prowl the woods. Tragedy occurs when Yvon and Xaragitte are killed by a lion. However, Claye is saved when a female troll finds and adopts him over the objection of her clan, who dub him Maggot due to his small size and sickly looking skin color.
As Maggot grows up amongst the trolls who consider him inferior though he is much more intelligent than any of them, he concludes he needs to return to his species because something is lacking. He begins a trek to find himself by finding humans. This need leads him into war, a seemingly normal human occupation in which the bringers on, claiming ethical right, use other people's children to fight. That morality lesion leads him to the marauders, specifically Portia, but where that will go only time and reading the book (and sequels?) will tell.
Though this coming of age fantasy starring a tremendous protagonist (Tarzan of the trolls) is a fun tale, the story line never decides between jocularity and biting social commentary. Still Maggot makes the tale as he as an "innocent" stranger when it comes to human behavior who observes the hypocrisy of people especially those claiming a higher moral position to defend violent acts. Overall thought provoking, PRODIGAL TROLL is a fine tale with the hero's quest to continue in future adventures that is if Charles Coleman Finlay is not under NSA surveillance for communicating with alien trolls.

Enjoyable.......2006-01-15
I spent a nice summer by the pool with this book, squinting up (or down, depending on what part I needed to tan) at page after page. It's a good read.
I know people have compared it again and again to Tarzan, but I don't think that's a bad thing. I enjoyed Tarzan the many times I read it, so to revisit the idea was an experience I found enjoyable, with a writer as perceptive as Finlay. Finlay takes his foundling past the turn-of-the-century (er, 20th) adventure tale and depicts his troll society with vivid, carefully researched behaviors and thought processes.
I personally found Maggot's characterization a little thin, but that may be appropriate since, so far, Maggot seems to be the reader's proxy for Finlay's engaging world.
I'm looking forward to any further installments in this milieu.
An outsider's quest for identity and destiny.......2005-10-24
Most of the other reviewers have compared this book to Tarzan, but I'll compare it with Tanith Lee's The Birthgrave, which also has a quasi-human central character alone and isolated, searching for her true identity amid a series of decadent and violent human societies. The difference is that The Birthgrave conveys both sadness and power; the mysterious guilt of the heroine is more interesting than the Troll-boy's innocence.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-08-07
This is a book no household should be without. Very informative and helpfull. The index is great and the information is to the point... Excellent photos and drawings. Only drawback: a bit bulky!
Mayo Clinic - Family Health Book.......2006-08-07
The Mayo Family Health book is a "wealth of information."
My husband recently became ill and was hospitalized. We were able to pinpoint symptoms in the book which helped us along with our health provider get appropriate testing and treatment for his condition.
With healthcare today, we must be "informed consumers".
I have worked nearly 35 years in clinical laboratory medicine and I still learn something new everyday....this book certainly helps.
A book I very much want to get .......2006-03-20
I like the format of this book. The six sections seem designed to truly make the work user friendly.
They are:
Part I: Living Well II: Common Conditions and Concerns Through Life's Stages III: Making Sense of Your Symptoms
IV: First Aid and Emergency Care VisualGuide: Anatomy and Common Disorders Part V: Diseases and Disorders
VI: Tests and Treatments
The great prayer is that most of what one learns from reading and going through this guide will not have to be useful or relevant.
This is One of the Three books you Need to Have.......2005-12-23
This is an excellent resource book that covers a large majority of health conditions and treatments. It give a thorough explanation of Symptoms, First Aid, Diseases and Disorders, Tests and Treatments. What is especially nice are the chapters on common conditions based on your age group and how to Live Well. The information is covered thoroughly with illustrations and diagrams. There is a full-color photograph and illustrations section in the book called the Visual Guide. This section is helpful when trying to identify things like rashes and skin disorders and for reviewing anatomy.
The other two books you should possess for starting your medical/health library should include a good drug/medication book (or use a website like www.medlineplus.gov) and a good medical dictionary (recommend Taber's, but MedlinePlus also has an encyclopedia/dictionary).
Mayo Clinic Family Health Book, Third Edition.......2005-09-21
I was needing an up-to-date health book and I am well pleased with my choice. The book arrived in very good condition and is everything I needed.
Thank you.

Customer Reviews:
The best in the series!!.......2007-04-04
This book has a whole section on calzones, pizzas, and hand tossed breads which is my favorite! Everything I have made turns out WONDERFULLY!!
This is an AWESOME cookbook, I love the way the recipes are listed in the book, very easy to follow. The ingredients are listed in order to how they should be placed in the machine, there are instructions for 1, 1/2, and 2 lb loaves. The print is large which also makes the recipes easy to follow. I own her whole series of BM cookbooks because I like them so much!! Great variety also--if I have a certain ingredient that I want to use up in my cupboard, 9 times out of 10 I can find a recipe for bread that I can use it in!! Can't say enough good things about this cookbook!!
I didn't want to give it back!.......2000-02-03
A friend lent me this book three months ago and I kept making excuses for not returning it. In the end, she came for lunch, and feeling guilty I thought I would just write out my favourite recipes, and ones I wanted to try ... an hour later and I was still writing! She came for lunch (I served Corny Bread, my favourite so far) and during dessert I was STILL writing. She felt so bad, she told me to keep it longer. She also suggested I tried Amazon, and here I am and have ordered all the books in the series, plus copies for some of my friends. This is the best Bread Machine Cookbook. It is simple, with no uneccesary information. The joy of Bread Machines is that once you have done a couple of recipes from your Instruction book you can cook anything and don't need to be told the same information over and over again. I love every recipe I have tried so far from this book. Everyone with a bread machine should have one!
Easy and delicious!.......2000-01-13
I checked this book out of my public library and cried when it needed to be returned! I absolutely loved it. I tried many of the recipes and found all to be wonderful. The 4 star rating is due to the directions not always being super clear. The book tends to deal on the level of one having had experience with a bread machine. Highy recommended!
A must have book that is easy to follow and indispensible........1998-08-02
This book has a great section on sourdough breads that I have used again and again. The author provides an accurate description of each bread with suggestions of menu accompaniments. I would consider this author an expert on bread machine breads! And so easy to follow.

Collecting Miniature Emergency Vehicles........2002-07-15
This is one of my favorite books on collecting miniature fire trucks and ambulances. I have used this book to keep track of what I collect and it is very informative on many models and manufacturers through 1985. I do not know of any other book that has been researched and complete concerning the collecting of emergency vehicles. I recommend this book to anyone that shares this great hobby...

Download Description
The basic business model of the book publishing industry remained largely changed between the Great Depression and the turn of the Millennium. Print a lot of books, try to get them reviewed so that stores would stock them on consignment, advertise, then hope that they don't come back as returns. Small imprints and self-publishers were reduced to begging distributors to accept their titles at discounts of 60 per cent or more, and were expected to accept returns in any condition and quantity. Print-on-demand book publishing, combined with short-discount distribution and Internet marketing, is turning the publishing business on its head. For the first time, authors are finding that they can launch their own publishing businesses and earn more from their writing than they would with a major trade publisher. Small imprints can invest their scarce resources in acquiring, designing and promoting new titles, rather than gambling on tons of books that cost money to keep in inventory. This book details the new method with which authors and publishers alike can use POD to cut costs and increase profits, while reaching new readers through the magic of Internet marketing.
Customer Reviews:
Morris knows - he's been doing it for a long, long time.......2007-10-01
Morris Rosenthal is an authority on self-publishing with Print on Demand. He was doing it long before most of us even considered it.
If you are publishing a book just for your friends and relatives, you might not need this book. There are plenty of "vanity presses" that will help you with that. But, if you are serious about publishing your book and selling it, and particularly if you plan to publish more than one book, then you definitely should consider using POD, and you must have this book.
I followed the advice Morris gives in the book and of others he recommended, and I'm thrilled with the results. Here is one of my books: Bicycle Shop Murder (Greg Tenorly Mystery Series, Book 1)
Thanks again, Morris!
A Good Reference on POD.......2007-08-25
I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about Print on Demand publishing (having had The Dream Catcher Tour POD-published) so I only bought this book to get my shopping cart up to free shipping status. I was surprised by how much I learned when I read it. As other reviewers have said, it is a basic primer on POD but that doesn't make it less valuable. Understanding the basics is key to understanding the complexities.
The most interesting thing to me was the clue to use the Advanced Search feature of online marketplaces to type in the publisher's name and then sort by Bestseller. This gives you an idea of how many books that publisher has made available to the online booksellers and how they sell in comparison to others in the publisher's list. It's another way to compare one publisher with another when shopping for a POD solution.
I think this book would benefit from an update. The publishing world is changing and POD publishing is emerging as a viable, respectable option for meeting publication needs.
This guy has the answers!.......2007-08-12
Mr. Rosenthal's book about publishing is very specific: it helps aspiring publishers (and the occasional, frustrated author) find a practical, low-cost route to joining the ranks of the published. I happened upon Morris' website about a year ago and have followed his informative blog ever since--it is one of my weekly stops for his thoughts on the world of publishing and on the world itself. He is as witty as he is informative, and his book reflects this--though, I must say, it doesn't suffer from his spontaneously-written blog entry spelling/grammar idiosyncracies--which is a good thing, because he recommends edit edit edit when it comes to printed books, and, obviously, a blog is much more spontaneous and free-flowing.
I can honestly say that Morris Rosenthal's book AND website are the two most helpful resources that I have used to successfully publish my first book. Through his copious writing, he will guide you, more or less, through the process of publishing, and you will have your first book to show for it! I've read other books, including the Rosses' book, and Dan Poynter's mess, and I can honestly say that Rosenthal's way is the right way--and he basically practices what he preaches, unlike many of the proclaimed experts on the subject.
Good Introduction to POD.......2007-05-08
A good, honest, if somewhat basic book on POD publishing. The Author spends time on describing the traditional publishing industry, print runs, agents, contracts, and outlets like Book clubs and the problems of getting shelf space in Bookstores.
He then compares that with the POD approach. The most interesting section for me was "A Year in the Life of a POD Title" where he gives a month by month breakdown of sales, profits and trends that affected sales of an actual book.
While the author does not lead you hand in hand through the POD process, it`s still a useful overview for Writers thinking about POD.
Helpful..........2007-04-27
The book is helpful but if you have read other books on self publishing, the information is pretty much in the same line. I gave it 4 stars because in all of the books I read (at least I) would like to see more referrals to companies such as POD printers and recomendations to good POD printers. I would also personally like to get more info on self- Audio publishing and I have so far been able to find some info online but don't mind getting some info in a book for which I pay.
I would like to also find out how can an author make sure that he is getting the correct reinbursement and not being scammed by the POD publisher.
Over all, the book is good and the author provides some more information on his website and answers questions you can post there. Find out what works for you and your budget.

Clear and careful instructions for some great projects.......2007-05-29
I own several books on book-binding, but I'm still struggling with case-bound books - so when an artist whom I respect recommended this one, I ordered it. I found that the instructions are very clear and well-illustrated; and that each project builds on the previous one. Each project contains lists of specific measurements and supplies, but the author also provides formulas for measuring, so that if you have some book-binding experience you can immediately modify the projects according to your own ideas. I felt so excited by the projects and the clarity of instructions that I went on a book-making binge, and made 5 of the projects in 3 days (including a very nice case-bound book). I haven't made any of the boxes yet, but I can see that the instructions for them are as clear as those for the books. I highly recommend this book.
Creating Books & Boxes: Fun and Unique Approaches to Handmade Structures.......2007-05-13
Paper of all kinds is easy to come by. This book teaches you how to create useful and decorative items from different papers. The author's handmade structures are well illustrated, and the directions are easy to follow. Once taught and inspired the sky's your only limit. Happy Papering!!!!!
Informative and instructive.......2007-03-05
It is an excellent introduction to book arts and box-making craft, and yet it contains information that are helpful to readers with more advanced skills. I have taken several classes from this author, and this book helps me to remember all the important techniques/principles that I learned from his classes: gluing, sewing, cutting, and figuring out the sizes of the paper/chipboard needed to create a specific book or a box. There are 11 book projects - four are of accordian type, one is of photo frame type, and the rest are bound type. And there are four box projects - one is three sided and the rest are four-sided, some with dividers. One of them requires no glue. Each project in this book contains a list of formulas and materials, thus making it easier for me to plan. The directions and diagrams are very readable and easy to follow. The surface treatment section is a nice and brief introduction to altering the appearance of the paper surface - four different techniques are presented. The gallery section contains many beautiful examples of how the basic techniques covered are used in different ways by various artists. It is truly a very informative, instructive, and inspiring book.
Book is as good as taking a class..........2007-01-27
I have taken classes with Ben, and his book is written so clearly and easily followed that it is almost like he is standing next to you, going over it step by step. Illustrations are very helpful but his 'real' work is even better. There is such a variety of projects in this book that I know I will keep it as a handy reference.
Very clear, easy-to-follow instructions for beautiful books and boxes.......2007-01-08
I'll preface this review by saying that I am not a crafty person. But every now and then, I like to challenge myself with an artistic project. After a few too many crooked scarves, I decided to try my hand at origami-style boxes, which is when I ran across "Creating Books and Boxes." This book strikes the perfect balance, whether you're a beginner like me or a serious artist with skills, offering simple, clear instructions, detailed illustrations and gorgeous book-binding, rubber stamping and box-creating projects. It covers so many different types of handmade paper structures--hand-stitched books, photo frames, accordion books, journals, container boxes, round boxes. What I really loved about "Creating Books and Boxes" is how approachable, and yet professional, the instructions are--from the techniques and terms to the materials (adhesives, tools, paper) you need. If you like making gifts with a personal touch, if you're into scrapbooking but hate the cheesy, mass-produced books sold in stores, if you want to make your own journals, this is the quintessential guide to doing it all, and then some. It's also an ideal gift for that hard-to-buy-for DIYer in your life.

James Melton's accessible study examines the rise of "the public" in eighteenth-century Europe. Focusing on England, France, and the German-speaking territories, this is the first critical reassessment of what the philosopher JÜrgen Habermas called the "bourgeois public sphere" of the eighteenth century. Topics include the growing importance of public opinion in political life, transformations of the literary public realm, eighteenth-century authorship, theater publics, and new practices of sociability as they developed in salons, coffeehouses, taverns and Masonic lodges.

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA DEPT OF METEOROLOGY report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A731083. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This Meteorological knowledge base for application of the Systematic Approach to Tropical Cyclone Track Forecasting in the Atlantic basin follows from similar knowledge bases previously developed for the western North Pacific, the eastern and central North Pacific, and the Southern Hemisphere. A common environment structure terminology has been adopted in which three synoptic patterns (Standard, Poleward, and Midlatitude) are found in each of these basins. Each basin also has a special pattern, which in the Atlantic is the Upper-level low. The conceptual models for these synoptic patterns with their associated synoptic regions are described here via a conceptual model, analysis examples, and the characteristic track segments within each region. A climatology of occurrences in each patter/region for the 1568 cases during 1990- 98 is prepared. The second key element in the knowledge base is the transitional mechanisms that change the environment structure and thus change the tropical cyclone steering flow. Conceptual models for these mechanisms are presented and illustrated with sequences of analyses. A climatology of recurring (at least four occurrences in nine years) transitions is prepared to indicate the most common track changes during these transitions.
