lots of great little short stories .......2005-06-01
most of the stories are about 5-10 pages. interesting easy to read stories chosen from the Alfred Hitchcock mystery magazine. The book was put together after Hitchcock's death and stories of course were not written by hitch.
Stories NOT by Alfred Hitchcock.......2002-06-20
I havent finished the book, Im saving it for those long summer days that are filled with nothing to do. For the most part the stories are cool, but some are as dull as dirt. I wont name any stories because I have 2 of these types of books and I may confuse stories from the other and write that they are in here. The big thing for me was the fact that these stories were chosen by Alfred Hitchcock, no he didnt chose some of his favorite stories that he wrote; he chose stories by other authors. The book says that he chose them, but it also states that this book is By:Alfred Hitchcock. I have no clue why, its sort of like hes stealing other authors stories. Anyway this is more an adult book unless you are a very good reader. I purchased this book when I was 14 and I am now 15 and I am able to understand most everything in the book, but there are some big words in it. But I am also one of the best readers in my class(at when reading to myself, I hate reading out loud). So if you are looking for something by Alfred Hitchcock then you might not want this book. If you want something that Mr.Hitchcock liked then you may want this. For the most part the stories are enjoyable and scarry, but dont expect this from all of them.

Hard to be Objective.......2002-12-28
I find it hard to objetivly reveiw this book. It found that it was very well written, and presented, and I truly had a hard time putting it down. I did have trouble however trying to figure out why Katherine Kurtz went this direction with the characters. I found all that happened very interesting and captivating, but the events seemed so out of place when compared to the path taken in earlier books. I am not dissapointed, just surprised. It felt as if the characters left their usual way of life and went on an african safari postponing everything else. Even taking all of that into consideration Ms. Kurtz has kept her amazing ability to write intact. Her characters are still believable, and her development of them and the plot are captivating.
A great disappointment . . ........2000-11-13
It's hard for me to be objective about this novel. I grew up with the Deryni books, I read them over and over again, and the first six (Deryni Rising, Deryni Checkmate, High Deryni, Camber of Culdi, Saint Camber, and Camber the Heretic) represented one of my favorite fantasy novel sagas of the time, huge in scope, vast in the apparent stretch of time, richly detailed by an author who knew the historical period, ahhh, it was hard for me to find anything that could measure up.
I waited, with great anticipation, the arrival of the third trilogy, heavily advertised. Bishop's Heir proved excellent and The Kings Justice was also quite interesting (and although I didn't know it, the seeds of my disatisfaction were sown here).
The Quest for Saint Camber, though. The title implied so much, and I knew that this author, so brilliant so far, would never do anything trite, easily expected, or trivial.
However, from the get go, the novel led me down a path of anguish. All the characters started going in odd directions, as if a great fleet had lost its commander, they stumbled around, failed to see things right in front of them, and then were surprised when they were bitten. I felt sick to my stomach, literally.
I went through a short term depression over my disappointment with this book (at that age, my novels were all I had). I will most certainly never read this novel again. I wish it had never been published, much less that I had spent money on it.
Perhaps my expectations were too high, but then, eight previous novels had led those expectations to a high pinnacle . . . the fall hurt.
An Amazing Adventure, with epic results.......1999-12-23
This is one of Kurtz best works and a highly enjoyable read. It pits family members against one another, king's against subjects, Deryni against deryni, and emotions against everyone. Keep kleenex and alot of time handy for this one, because you will need both! Kurtz does a masterful job of bringing the characters to life and vividly describes the heart ache and dissapointment of parents who lose a son, a man who loses the love of his life, and a king who must survive against the toughest odds only to come home and be emotionally destroyed. I DEFINATELY recommend this novel.
Better clear your calendar b4 reading this book........1998-07-29
Because you are never going to put it down. Once I opened it I never shut it until I had finished. It's very gripping and emotional. I would have a kleenex handy while reading. However I was saddened by yet another of Kelson's near brushes with happiness. That boy has the worst luck with women. He needs to find a nice girl to settle down with. Anyway I think it's about time for Katherine to get us off the edge of this cliff. We need the the next book. Please write the next book. Please?
A great read that is difficult to put down.......1998-04-09
The main theme of the book seems to be Kelson's search for relics of Saint Camber, but there is much more going on than that. Kelson at last comes to terms with the death of Sidana and realizes his growing love for Rothana. Kelson and Rothana promise to wait for his return from the quest before deciding on their future together. While on the quest Kelson and Dhugal are lost, last seen going down a crumbling cliff side and into a raging river. Kelson's jealous cousin, Conall, whether by accident or design, falls into place as the heir to the throne and regent after he brings about Nigel's debilitating seizure. As heir and regent, Conall needs a bride and has set his sights on Rothana. Many loose ends concerning Dhugal's heritage and Duncan's relationship with the church are wrapped up in this book.
This is a great read that sweeps you along and pulls you in, much like the river that Kelson and Dhugal are lost in. In the end it left me wanting more.

Spiritual development for families.......2006-04-06
Karen Yust has written a wonderful text about spiritual development of children. Her approach is very practical with excellent themes and tips on how to help children spiritually develop. She shares stories and themese from her family.
Every person interested in spiritual development of children MUST read this book! Teaching children spiritual practices at a young age is essential. She provides the tools needed to do so and the confidence in how to do that. I highly recommend reading this book.
Real substance.......2004-06-11
The author, Karen-Marie Yust, is a professor in charge of the Christian education programme at my seminary. A person of skill and accomplishment in both practical and academic aspects of ministry and education, she brings a lot of knowledge and resources to the task of looking at the spiritual development of children. This volume is part of the larger series on Families and Faith, looking at different aspects of faith formation in family settings, published by Jossey-Bass. The purpose of this series, according to Diana Garland and J. Bradley Wigger, is to help make love and grace real in family, congregational and community settings.
The idea of education for children, in secular and religious settings, is far from new, but the idea of formation for spirituality in children is relatively uncharted in the modern world. Spirituality is one of the ways in which we as human beings, adults or children, make sense of the world and where we belong in relationship to each other, and all others. Children have a sense of discovery and exploration, an appreciation for mystery and the unknown that is a vital part of spiritual formation - many is the adult who tries to recapture this sense in their own journey.
Finding appropriate resources for guiding children is not an easy task. Yust discusses the almost paradoxical situation of living in a society that purports to love and support children, but is lacking in resources appropriate to vital tasks - Happy Meals and Dr. Seuss books abound (and, in some ways, are valuable), but the tools for helping children exist as spiritual beings and grow into spiritually aware adults are lacking. She references John Westerhoff's text, `Will Our Children Have Faith?' drawing a similar conclusion that children will have faith so long as adults make the spiritual journey with them.
Yust's book is a practical one; it presents theory and observational data as appropriate to the task, but it is really a how-to guide in many respects. In one chapter, she likens the American culture in some ways as a `foreign' culture to the religious culture, and compares the struggle to co-exist in both to the way that immigrant families learn to co-exist with elements of the `old country' and their new home, developing a bi-cultural identity. In other chapters, she looks at the use of narratives and storytelling, as well as adaptation to language use (even if the same language of English is spoken in both home/secular culture and religious culture, the real `language' of meaning can be different).
The fifth chapter deals with prayer practices, and how to make these real and meaningful for children, including centering prayer and guided meditations. This is a useful guide for adults, too, as the chapter goes through in a clear and organised fashion the various types of prayer (supplication, confession, intercession, etc.) that we often forget. The next chapter deals with the introduction of theology for children - what they can know and grasp, and in what ways (which is often more than adults think!). The next chapter deals with action and expression of faith by children - social justice concerns, helping others, being aware and accepting of diversity.
Yust's conclusion deals largely with finding and fitting in with a community of worship. Not all congregations are created equal, even with denominations. There are various aspects to note, including availability of activities and opportunities for participation - this is not limited to who has the best Sunday School or who has the best youth group programming.
There are many nice touches here. Yust begins the introduction and ends the conclusion with reference to Maya Angelou's journeying poem, drawing the text full circle. There are reflection and discussion questions appropriate to each chapter; these can be for self-reflection or used as part of small groups and congregational/leadership events. The book would serve well a congregation that wanted to devote an eight-week study session to the subject of children, spirituality and their place in the community. Each chapter has pull-boxes with highlighted concepts, questions or activities for further consideration. Yust's reference list is nicely annotated, making further readings easily identified.
A wonderful text in many ways, it should find a home in the hands of every minister of a congregation with children, every Christian educator and parish leader, and every parent concerned with their children's spiritual development.

The best compilation I've seen yet........2002-01-20
This was my first cocktail book I ever bought, and it's still my favorite. Anthony Dias Blue goes into detail about bar setup, the do's and don'ts of making drinks, and even the history of the different alcohols and liqueurs. My favorite sections are the signature drink sections, where famous bars have their well-known drinks described in detail. There is a large portion of non-alcoholic drinks to boot.
I recommend this book to everyone, and even may buy myself a new one, as my current copy is water-stained. :D
a unique guide organized by spirit type........2001-11-30
this book is unique among bartending/mixed drink books because it's organized by type of spirit. in other words, if you have tequila in the liquor cabinet and nothing else, you can go to the section marked "tequila" and see what mixed drinks are available to you. it also includes an informative and interesting introduction to each spirit explaining it's history, distillation, and other tidbits. this is my favorite guide i've come across.
GREAT all-round cocktail guide for bar tenders!.......2000-08-03
As a bar tender, I found this book an excellent resource in my line of work. I do live in Australia and although some of the metric conversions might be difficult for the average home buyer of this book, most people who work in this industry know what an Oz is and can follow the measuring units easily. Great layout, with easy to follow steps and illustrations. Also a GREAT selection of non-alcoholic drinks (the most I've seen) to satisfy the non-drinkers out there. An excellent size, so it is handy if you do plan to use this in a bar to store under the counter. Good value book for the busy bar tenders out there, or for the home user who likes to impress friends.

A good book for a budding instructor.......2004-02-02
This manual for the most part, lays down rudimentary knowledge about teaching riding. Its a good source of information for someone hoping to become an instructor, and would even be good reading for someone who just started riding (to clarify questions).
It has details on different types of courses for different students, rider safety, and covers student progression up to the beginner/intermediate level.
For someone who has moderate experience as an instructor, it may be redundant information but its still very usefull as a reference, and will clear up any small teaching obstacles that you may have with your younger students.

This book is a well written, concise basic introduction to the subject. The book helps the beginning businessman stay out of legal trouble by providing information on licenses, taxes,and zoning codes. Different operating options are provided as well as plant care and equipment requirements.
Not much useable info but some good ideas........1999-02-18
Only one paragraph on greenhouses, no wonder he only can make a few thousand. You really need a greenhouse to grow your starts in this business and to have only a little on this subject tells me alot..( he never made it big) There is no mention of caring for the enviorment here, The use of posins are recomended and no real overall plan for runoff or water table poulution, guess he doesn't care. Any way if you got extra bucks, get it cause one good idea can be worth the price.

The 207 page book delivers on its promise. The book is particularly good in explaining the value of "time" in the nursery business. If you expect to make money with your greenhouse... or with a nursery business, this is an EXCELLENT book to get.
It's easy to read and contains lots of money-making ideas. Here's a way to get that greenhouse by your spouse... "look at the extra money we can make!" If you have teenage children, this is a great way for them to earn extra money. If you're a business man, I think there you can make more money with less work in other ways. But hey, it's fun. The book is oriented to growing flowers and shrubs... and not so much for growing vegetables. Although growing herbs is one of the things recommended. They deliver on describing how to make $5,000 in only 1,000 sq. ft. The most important thing this book delivers is the core thinking process that a nurseryman must analyze in terms of time, and profit per unit of time. I didn't realize this was so important, but now it makes sense to me.

It offers reasons for his editorial choices, and explains his interpretations of the text as reflected in his translation. I read this book many years ago when I was about 18... I loved it. It a very intriquing book about self discovery in the worst sense. I would definately read it again.

Pre Psych School reference.......2000-10-14
This is a book every student concidering a career in Psycology or Psychiatry should read, and take an honest look at. In a day when these professions solution is to drug people, and research now shows that a moderate excercise program to remedy depression better than drugs do, it is an honest look at those professions. It is a book taking a look at a "profession" that uses a vote of hand to discover new deseases of the mind, rather than scientific evidence. I highly recommend this book to anyone concidering a career in these fields. Then go and become a Vet or something!
SHRINK ASSAULT - VERY FUNNY.......2000-09-19
This book is excellent. If you're a budding psych then I highly recommend this book. It manages to balance out the view of psychs that many students are submitted to during their degrees. We're certainly not all wonderful and if any psychs admitted to the fact that they don't have a clue what they're doing, then it would be a step in the right direction. The book takes a humorous look at the torture psychs inflict upon the mentally ill, the arrogance some psychs display and the 'fabulous' logic some exude.
Buy the book - it will provide insight to those who have not yet been exposed to the evil side of psychs and it will provide humor to those who have.
