Good introduction to Rumpole.......2003-09-22
This is a selection of stories chosen by the author himself, showcasing the talents and idiosyncrasies of Horace Rumpole, described by his own wife (known as 'She Who Must be Obeyed') as a character. We follow Rumpole through various cases, which give us an insight into Rumpole's views of life and the law (he is quite scathing of both). We meet various regular inhabitants of the Rumpole stories - the Timosn family, who with their many and varied exploits provide Rumpole with much work; 'Miz Liz' Probert, Rumpole's feminist protégé; uncle Tom, who hasn't seen a brief for many a year and spends his days in chambers practicing his putting; and many others. While very humourous, some of the humour is a bit dated, though this may be part of its appeal for some.
The book is a collection of short stories, originally published elsewhere, and each stands alone. so you are able to dip in and out of this book. I am not really a fan of legal stories, humourous or otherwise, but in short dose these make a light break. It is also a good introduction to the Rumpole stories for those who haven't encountered Rumpole before, or have only met his television incarnation. And the individual stories are short, so it's not like you have wasted much of your time if they are not for you
A sampler of great stories.......2002-03-15
Well, yes, a strong case could be made that these stories represent the Best of Rumpole, although Rumpolemaniacs must argue for a few omitted cases, but, great as these stories are - and they are engaging, clever, funny, satisfying - I don't know what the purpose of this sampler is meant to be. To introduce Rumpole to a prospective reader I would start with The First Rumpole Omnibus. It addds much to the pleasure of reading Rumpole to get to know him as he develops over the course of the original stories. On the other hand, this makes a terrific airplane or travel read, even for those who've read them all before (Rumpole is one of those characters that not only holds up well read after read but actually improves with familiarity).

If you were introduced, as I was, to the Rumpole character through the excellent PBS series, there's a treat in store for you. John Mortimer's Rumpole stories are almost too good to be true; they're witty, humorous, and can be enjoyed as examples of good writing in addition to being well-plotted mysteries. They're one of the few mystery series which don't lose enjoyment even after you've seen the film adaptations. My favorite Rumpoles are probably Rumpole a la Carte and Rumpole on Trial; this "Best of" compilation features stories, chosen by Mortimer, from several different eras, including Rumpole's very first appearance. The book is a good way to get acquainted with Rumpole, and it also makes a great gift.
The only possible downside is that, after reading the Rumpole stories, you may think that Mortimer's other fiction doesn't *quite* measure up. Here's hoping he decides to bring back Rumpole!
A touch of wry British humour, and starkly genuine.........1998-06-14
Mortimer paints a realistic picture of life in a barristers' chambers, but lightens the solemn and sombre mood with the playful descriptions of the characters to whom you will become strongly attached in time.
Even though for one who does not hail from an English background, it was relatively easy to comprehend the sarcasm and ironies aimed at the empty follies of the English legal practioners, which Mortimer portrays through the thoughts and words of Horace Rumpole. Rumpole is a good sort, who seems often the underdog, but deep down he is the barrister who would be the champion for the unjust.

Moore notes a pasty, rival scientist "looked like Death out for his after-dinner stroll before a busy night of e-mailing heart attacks and tumors to a few million lucky winners," and that killer whales (which are all named Kevin), are "just four tons of doofus dressed up like a police car." What a weird strange trip.......2007-08-01
I've only recently discovered the writings of Christopher Moore, but I'm now on a quest to read all of his books, and I can't tell you why. They are all uniquely quirky and funny. Each of his novels is a fairly quick read with a love story, a mystery, and some sort of paranormal element thrown in for good measure.
His style of writing makes his books so easy to digest. You don't have to think, just giggle.
I started out by reading "LAMB" and actually 'learned' some religous history. I found his account fascinating and exciting. It led me to want to read more of his writings, and I've been glad that I have.
Fluke is a great book, but its premise starts to get a little strange. If I want to start thinking about my impact on the planet, I stick to "ISHMAEL".
I recommend Christopher Moore as an author and this book as a second or third book of his to pick-up. To get a flavor for his work, start out with "YOU SUCK - A LOVE STORY" and then either this or "LAMB".
Laugh and learn about sea mammals.......2007-07-28

For anyone looking for a break from the mundane, cliche novels that are out there, then Christopher Moore will certainly fit the bill; and Fluke is no exception. The story is of a whale biologist and his eventful (and unbelievable) research in Hawaii. Of course, Moore's insane and inane plot devolves from there.
Although this book delivered a few laughs, I did not find it nearly as funny as "A Dirty Job" (although Moore's comments on "advanced poop-chute technology" should not be missed).
The plot overall is as crazy and unexpected as you would expect from Moore, but seems to drag a little toward the end. Also, I was not terribly happy with the resolution of everything.
The characters are very likeable, but do not seem to do much growing over the course of the novel.
Fluke is worth checking out if you are a fan of Moore's, or if you have some free time on your hands, but you may be better off getting it at the library.

Enzymes for alot more than Autism.......2007-08-26
I bought this book because my son has mild Asperger's Syndrome. I had already discovered that vitamins B6 and B3 (niacin) work better for his anxiety than zoloft, so I expected to learn more along the same lines from this book. I had no idea that yeast overgrowth (dysbiosis) caused leaky gut syndrome which results in neurological disorders in the young (which continues throughout their lives) and all kinds of other autoimmune disorders in older people. I made the connection that my lifelong shyness, 4 years of constant yeast infections and 10 years of worsening joint inflammation were caused by dysbiosis when I read this book. I bought the enzymes for my son to take with meals, but he wouldn't take them, so I tried them myself and in two days my hips weren't sore. They had been throbbing constantly for the past year and I assumed that I would have to be on anti-anflammatory meds for life, which I was resisting. So, we are both treating for candida yeast overgrowth and building up our probiotics. I might try again to get him to take the enzymes, but the probiotics produce some results also. Without the enzymes, it will take many months to see the results that we could have if he took the enzymes now.
This book doesn't cover all aspects of yeast kill, but neither do most of the other books and websites that I've read. I've learned something new from each source. I highly recommend this book as an excellent start for correcting your dysbiosis including products to use, daily maintenance and a timeline. This author could revamp the book to cover B vitamin deficiencies (B vitamins secrete from our beneficial bacteria which is compromised by the dysbiosis) and mention all auto-immune disorders and re-title it: Enzymes for Autism and Other Neurological Disorders plus Over 5,000 Diseases, Syndromes and Symptoms.
I would also like to mention that congress is on the side of pharmaceutical corporations which have deep pockets and lots of lobbyists to ensure the sales of their products. If the public were well aware of the magnitude of yeast overgrowth and its results so that we could treat the cause and not have to medicate the symptoms of all of these diseases, they would lose billions of dollars in revenue! They know this and they are attempting to eliminate their competition. They have attempted, through the FDA, to make manufacturing requirements so strict for nutritional supplements that it would put alot of companies out of business. Most politicians aren't aware of their real reasons for this. We have to be watchdogs about this, especially with so many of our leaders on the side of government-controlled medicine, it seems logical that government-controlled nutritional supplements would follow if the FDA is pushing it.
A wonderful option every person with autism should try.......2007-06-20
This book, written by a mother of two children with sensory integration and other neurological issues and who has sensory issues herself, gives all the information a parent of a child with autism or other neurological condition needs to start using enzymes, which can be an alternative to the popular gluten-free/casein-free diet. DeFelice details what enzymes are, how they work in the digestive system, how to start using them, what to expect when starting, the myriad benefits of using them, and much more.
After reading the book, I started my 2-year-old son on enzymes. It has been just under 4 weeks, and we have gotten through the "regression/withdrawal" phase and are already seeing good things: more language attempts, sweeter disposition, good appetite. I am excited to see what the next several weeks bring.
Written in easy-to-understand language, this book offers a message of hope to parents!

This book contains a lot of helpful information. I learned so much about using enzymes for Autism and have found by using enzymes that behaviors have improved. This book explained why they work and how they work.

My son is autistic. After seeing a DAN doctor, I was so overwhelmed with the supplements recommended, and the drastic change in my child once the supplements were started. This helped me understand that each autistic child is so different, and a slow steady approach is what is needed. My son has had very good results with the help of this and Karen's other book Go with the Gut!

I haven't had a chance to try any of the recipes yet, but looking through the delicious recipes, I can tell they are really fantastic, or should I say "Fabulous." The book has lots of info regarding techniques, freezing fruit and even types of glasses. Very nice and can't wait to actually taste some of these creations.

This book was a real eye opener for me. I love
smoothies and I've also been trying to hone my
bartending skills, but for some reason I never
associated the two. When you think about it, it's a
natural combination, and the recipes in this book make
it clear how easy many of my favorite cocktails, and
several others that are new to me, can be transformed
into an alcoholic smoothie. The rum smoothies and
liqueur smoothies are my favorites, but I was
surprised how well so many vodka, whiskey, and gin
drinks make the transformation as well. It's a great
book. If you're into cocktails, or want to be, I
highly recommend it.

Hi, this is Margaret H. Bonham, the author. I want to tell you a bit about A Dog's Wisdom. It was a very hard book to write because it was very emotional. I decided to explore the reasons why dogs are so great. Dogs seem to have an inherent wisdom that we humans sometimes lack. They know to take care of their own, to party with wild abandon, and to love those who love us (and many times love those whom no one loves).
This book explores the unique relationship we dog owners have with our dogs. Over the years I've had the joy of meeting many wonderful dogs -- and even a coyote whom I affectionately called Maynard. I tried to put into words what I saw within those deep brown (or in some cases, blue) eyes.
To be honest with you, I can't read some of the stories without getting all teary-eyed. Yes, there are sad stories, but there are happy, funny, silly, touching and even amazing stories. I have found wisdom in so many dogs I've known. I bet you have too.

A book to get you started........2007-05-31
If you're the type of person that likes to do things without a lot of theory, this is a great book.
I'm a novice gardener and the introduction gardening instructions just didn't have enough information for me. I decided to purchase Gardening For Dummies and various other books to satisfy my need for detailed information before setting some serious time, money, and effort into a balcony garden for my apartment.
This book has great ideas and did a good job of introducing me to different herbs and plants to grow to be used in cooking. But if you want to get more "hardcore" with gardening I recommend getting other texts as well.
A sweet useful gem of a book...........2003-01-08
First let me admit I am biased, since this gem is written by someone I know and admire, here in Northern California. But it nonetheless a gem of a book with superb photographs as well as excellent advise on Do's and Don't of raising a variety of herbs. I also like the book because it shows that one can successfully raise year round fresh herbs, and do so on an acre or on a small patio. And the author also covers edible flowers another favorite of my families.
Great little book............2002-09-19
LITTLE HERB GARDENS is a great book for the novice. The authors have assembled a lovely collection of photographs and interspersed them with succinct text that explains how to identify and select easy to grow herbs; when and where to buy them (spring, fall, summer, nurseries or catalogs, plants or seeds); how to pot them (containers, soil, etc.); and where to place them (balconies, patios, or in small gardens).
This little book will inspire you to create a green space in a kitchen window, an assemblage before a patio or balcony door, or a collection of pots on the balcony. Herbs grow best in full sunlight, so if your balcony faces south, you are in luck. If you live in a town house or have a small patch of ground you can think more expansively, but this book does not really deal with garden design, or the issues associated with herb gardening. Herbs are frequently garden thugs that run amuck in the open. I suggest you find a more in-depth book such as RODALE'S ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBS if you intend to go beyond pots and are thinking of growing mints, yarrows, violets, or some of the other "easy" to grow herbs suggested by this book. RODALE'S book also covers the poisonous aspects of herbs. (Some of them can kill you.)
The last section of LITTLE HERB GARDENS briefly covers kitchen uses of herbs including making herb-infused vinegars and herb-flavored sorbets. If you want to know more, once again you will have to turn to something more comprehensive such as THE COMPLETE BOOK OF HERBS by Lesley Bremness. Even if you can't grow herbs, you can buy them at the farmer's market and some food stores. LITTLE HERB GARDENS is not the only book available for learning how to grow herbs or use them, but it will get you started.
Concise and Beautiful.......2000-06-16
This book has it all--eye-pleasing photography and concise, useful information. The heart of the book is an herb-by-herb description of how to grow the plants. It's organized in a unique way according to where you could keep them--windowsill or fire escape, inside porch, outdoor pots, pantry, etc. There are suggestions for special ornamental techniques (such as topiary) and recipes for culinary herbs. Finally, the book lists seed and plant sources in the U.S. All in all, a real pleasure to read.

Excellent Intro Tutorial.......2001-10-10
Excellent step-by-step presentation of the basics of Microsoft Publisher. While not pretending to be a complete course, this six chapter text takes starts with basic concepts and then walks you through creating various publications for the fictional "Adventure Works" tour company.
Quick Course/Microsoft Publisher 2000 - Don't bet on it.......2001-05-17
A word of warning to those who believe the title - the authors claim it is for the 2000 version of Publisher, but many of the screens and keystrokes they portray are of an earlier version. After struggling through several pages of the intro, they thoughtfully threw in a text box on page 10, to explain that the book is based on the '98 version of the program and that "the appearance of your screen might not match ours..." Terrific. If you are a veteran of Publisher, this might not be a problem, but if you bought this thing thinking it would lead you through the 2000 edition of the program, you are left to wander through it, and getting stuck on a page with no way to go back without losing what you already have done. If you are a rookie on learning this program, don't expect this book to be your guide. Take a class instead or keep looking for a better tutorial.

The Lord asked his disciples to pray "the Lord of the harvest that he send labourers into the field". The fields are white, it's labourers, anointed labourers that are needed. This book will give people a renewed vision of what a man + God can accomplish. God is still "looking for a man"!
