1 out of 5 stars Where's the "mystery"?.......2006-09-08

This was my first encounter with this author, and sadly, will very likely be my last. I could not stay with the plot, nor could the author. It was hard to decide whether this was to be a comedy (although the humor often escaped me), historical (lots of "facts" regarding the Mennonite and Amish way of life) or a genuine mystery. I agree with previous posters...the "vailed" innuendos with regard to her pet kitten just don't come across the way I believe they have been intended.

Fortunately, there are some very good mystery writers available to keep me reading for years to come. I really don't like to be so critical, but I was really turned off by this book.

3 out of 5 stars Fast.......2005-05-11

I couldn't believe the "between you and I" phrases that appeared quite frequently in the whole book. It reminded me of Shakespeare and we certainly are not Shakespeare. The writer/editor/publisher team didn't seem to be doing a thorough job with the copy that I was reading. Nevertheless, it is an easy mystery and a fast read. I will certainly check out other works of Ms. Myers. Her sense of humor is cliché yet they make me smile and laugh out loud just the same. The main character is brutally honest and that makes the story move pretty fast especially when a lot of dialogues are introduced. The recipes are just a tad too rich for me so I wouldn't try them or if I did, I would cut down on the amount of eggs used. All in all, it is a suitable reading while being comfortable by the fire on a stormy day.

Tamar Myers, The Crepes of Wrath (New American Library, 2001)

I hate to say it, but I've binged a little too much on Tamar Myers over the last eight months. Like consuming too many ice cream sundaes all at once, the feeling you get after finishing your last one is more uncomfortable nausea than pleasure. When you've read four or five PennDutch mysteries in a concentrated amount of time, all the wailing will eventually get to you.

To be fair, Magdalena does do a lot less wailing in this book, but replaces it with various other W-words. One wonders, idly, which letter of the alphabet Myers will be abusing next in Magdalena's quest to solve the various crimes too complex for her stupid brother-in-law, Chief of Police Melvin Stoltzfus, to get his head around. In this case, a teetotaling Amish woman has keeled over from an overdose of angel dust; too busy with his campaign to bother, Melvin asks Magdalena to take the case. Not that she doesn't have an innful of weirdos to deal with, as usual, and her tentative relatinship with a guy who's not only from out of town, but Jewish to boot. You can almost hear her mother rolling over in her grave. (Magdalena does, more than once, in the course of this novel).

Tamar Myers is getting more scurrilous as time goes on (there's rather a large number of double-entendres involving Magdalena's pet kitten Little Freni; methinks Myers has developed a perfectly reasonable fondness for the British sitcom Are You Being Served? In recent years), which is always a good thing, and the book's as readable as ever. Actually, I liked it better than the earlier PennDutch mysteries I've read; Myers is getting more of a sense of how to plot as time goes on, leading to less explanation-of-the-mystery at the end (here, there's only about half a page of "aha! This is how I knew you were the killer!"). But be warned, dear reader, an excess of empty calories can lead to a tender stomach. Take Magdalena in small doses. ***

4 out of 5 stars Great fun.......2004-03-19

Sometimes we forget that a book of fiction is primarily to entertain the reader, to cause the reader to forget for a while his or her "otherwise drab and wretched life." I borrow that phrase without shame from Tom Lehrer.

This book is certainly an entertainment. The plot isn't all that much, I'll admit. Otherwise, I'd have given it five stars. However, I am just enthralled with Magdalena Portulacca Yoder, the skinny, middle-aged Mennonite innkeeper who runs around Hernia, Pennsylvania, with a small kitty asleep in her bra. If you haven't read the book, you won't believe that or understand it at all. Trust me, she does. And when that kitty is awakened suddenly, well....

The Amish and Mennonite neighbors (along with the "English" inn guests and neighbors) are also memorable--quirky but surely alive. The town itself and the country inn provide a fine atmosphere, one I would like to visit. My only reservation is the thinnish plot and a rather vague resolution, but at least we didn't get a confession and then a suicide.

I will definitely read more books by Tamar Myers. Thank you. You made me laugh outloud, and I haven't done that with a novel since "The Confederacy of Dunces."

1 out of 5 stars How Irritating Can One Book Be?.......2004-03-18

I began this book on a recommendation by a friend. I still consider her my friend, but the book struck me as so contrived and poorly written that I had to stop reading after a few chapters. There is no character development, and the author is simply trying too hard to be funny. Her attempts at humor fall absolutely flat. The main character alternates her speech between whispered grimaces and screaming. One dimensional people walk in and out of the scenes, but for what purpose? I didn't find the author delightfully funny; the book is not amusing--nor was it worth my time.

If you like detective humor mixed with cooking and recipes, I suggest any book written by Diana Mott Davidson. If you're looking for even funnier detective humor, try Janet Evanovich's series featuring Stephanie Plum. These two authors may have been the inspiration for "Crepes of Wrath" and other books by the author, but Tamar Myers falls far short of Davidson and Evanovich. I'm surprised that there is any sort of following for these books!

For readers looking for a more serious crime maven, I suggest Nevada Barr's books featuring Anna Pigeon. Wake up folks! There are some REALLY good authors out there to be discovered!

        3 out of 5 stars Frustratingly Repetitive.......2005-03-31

This book is decent, but it's hard to read at times, because it is extremely repetitive. Turtledove feels like if he doesn't remind you of something every five pages, you're going to forget. The most commonly repeated theme is that Gerin the Fox is so very, very clever, and this is reinforced by other characters constantly saying, "Gee Gerin, you're one clever guy." Every character is treated this way - they all have one character type, and the author refers to this whenever he possibly can. One character likes wine. One character always does what's obvious. Other characters don't like one another. If he would cut out the repetition the book would be half as long and twice as good.

On a similar vein, way too much of the narration and dialogue consists of sarcastic or ironic statements that the other characters are too dumb to catch on to. The author tries really hard to make sure you understand that King Gerin is so much more clever than the other dolts in his world, but he (Turtledove) really needs to give the reader more credit and allow them to figure some things out for themselves.

All in all, the story isn't bad, but it's nothing special either. It seemed like the other Gerin the Fox books were better, but maybe Turtledove's style has just grown stale for me as I've read more of his stuff.

4 out of 5 stars I hope Turtledove writes more of this universe!.......2000-01-01

That demigod is a very interesting character. He could turn out to be a very valuable ally of the Fox and his descendants. You got to admit, the Fox and/or the Archer could have saved themselves alot of trouble by fortifying the pass to the northlands. It would have been better if the Fox defeated the all imperial troops in conventional battle without the intervention of Biton. But then I wished that because I crave large-scale combat.

4 out of 5 stars The Fox muddles through, again.......1998-03-15

One of the reasons I have enjoyed the Fox books is that Turttledove's Fox takes what comes and deals with it. Usually with wit and guile, and a little luck; and recognizes his own limitations. It's nice to have a series where we see the maturity of the pricipals grow.

5 out of 5 stars Great series, keep it up.......1998-03-12

The continuing adventures of Gerin the Fox , King of the Northlands, are a wild ride. For a man who just wants to live in peace, Gerin has adventure after adventure. The return of the Empire after 20 years is a headache he doesn't need, on top of his problems with greedy neighbors and a 4 year old demigod. Great read.

5 out of 5 stars Well done, Harry!.......1998-01-22

I am working my way through most of H. Turtledove's books and this one is even better than most -- which means you should sit up, take note and go find yourself a copy.

                          Book Description

All about the Mediterranean Diet, from guiding principles to specific recipes, for people who want to improve their health by improving their eating habits. Most people know that a Mediterranean-style diet is "good for them," but many lack the information that determines the diet's success. The Mediterranean Heart Diet does what most doctors who recommend the diet don't: spells out which foods are "out" and which are "in," and why.

Doctors recommend a Mediterranean eating style to thousands who are diagnosed each year with heart disease because it is "heart-healthy"-it promotes lower saturated-fat consumption, and helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

It is an all-purpose style of eating that also benefits those at risk of developing certain cancers and those with a diabetic condition, because it is high in antioxidant-rich foods and whole grains. The Mediterranean Heart Diet not only provides a full range of satisfying recipes but also covers the science behind the diet's health benefits. Readers learn to create their own healthful eating plans and establish new habits.

More than 140 delicious recipes are included, from satisfying Lentil and Broccoli Soup to tangy Halibut in Citrus Sauce. All recipes feature nutritional analysis by serving, including food exchanges.

                          1 out of 5 stars Faulty Information.......2007-07-24

This is an absolutley "terrible" book. It first tells you what the Mediterranean Diet was many years and and how it is so helpful - THEN it tells you how to make bread with WHITE ALL-PURPOSE BREAD FLOUR. WHAT A STUPID BOOK. Then it goes on to tell you how to update the diet with new technology learned over the last century. THAT IS NOT WHAT THE AUTHOR SHOULD BE DOING = THEY SHOULD BE TELLING YOU WHAT THE DIET "WAS" NOT WHAT THE AUTHOR THINKS IT SHOULD BE. And as an added "insult" they tell you to stop smoking. Do you think the Mediterranean"s "Smoked". Of course, and they were living longer than anybody on earth. What arrogance.

4 out of 5 stars Great Heart Diet.......2007-07-16

This is a diet that the average person can live with and lose weight with for the rest of their lives. It isn't fast but steady, you're not hungry and you can have veggies and fruits, and pastas, chicken & fish. And occassionaly dessert and red meat. I only wish there were more sample menues or more about portions. I am losing weight at about 2 or 3 lbs. weeks and I love it!

I bought 3 different cook books at the same time. This is my favorite. The walnut topped portabello mushrooms are to die for. Everything in this book that I've tried so far has been excellent.

Not for people raised in the deep south and who have limited access to the ingredients in the receipes. Instead of buying this book just do what the doctors are always telling you. Cut down or out on red meat and eat more vegetables. Substitute fish or fowl in place of the red meat. Also do as the Apostle Paul said in the Bible, "take a little wine for thy stomach's sake". Then get out and walk more.

I love the food. I never realized there were so many different Herb and spices and what they were for. I always used Garlic salt instead of real Garlic. I replaced our regular salt with sea salt. Our cooking oil is now extra virgin olive oil. I am not only enjoying great food but healthier meals and I feel great.

I am the busy mother of a toddler and also a subcriber to Aviva's Six O'Clock Scramble weekly newsletter. I am also the owner of many, many cookbooks and this is my favorite one for easy weeknight meals. All the recipes are healthy, use fresh ingredients (no canned soups), and always turn out great. The recipes are so good that I even use several of them for entertaining (Spiced Chicken with Maple Butter Glaze and Warm Chicken Salad with Mixed Greens are two of our favorites). I highly recommend this book as well as the Scramble newsletter!

The recipes are healthy, delicious and easy to prepare. Yes, you can prepare food fast without it being processed, who knew?

                          Book Description

COLTER pairs one of America's most treasured writers with our most treasured "best friend." Colter, a German shorthair pup, was the runt of the litter, and Rick Bass took him only because nobody else would. Soon, though, Colter surprised his new owner, first with his raging genius, then with his innocent ability to lead Bass to new territory altogether, a place where he felt instantly more alive and more connected to the world. Distinguished by "crystalline, see-through-to-the-bottom prose" (Rocky Mountain News), this interspecies love story vividly captures the essence of canine companionship, and yet, as we've come to expect from Rick Bass, it does far more. "With an elegant, often erudite flavor to this story" (Book Page), COLTER illuminates the heart of life by recreating the sheer, unmitigated pleasure of an afternoon in the Montana hills with a loyal pup bounding at your side.

Although I know nothing about hunting birds or hunting dogs I really enjoyed this book-I read it in just a few hours because It was so captivating...I first read about colter in the book DOG IS MY COPILOT and ordered this book after reading an excerpt in that book and I LOVED IT....Of course I cried but I will read anything about dogs and I highly recommend this book....

For any dog lover this is a great read. Bass is a very sensitive and descriptive writer. You will laugh and cry as you relate to this personal story.

                          5 out of 5 stars Not really a hunting book...much more........2005-04-23

For Rick Bass, the qualities of innocence, wonder, and vibrancy of life come together in the form of a brown pointer who runs with a smile and an inquisitiveness about the natural world that forms a wonderful, compelling narrative. This book is not really about hunting. Nor is it about dog training; it is much more.
Bass tells the reader about his idyllic life in an extremely remote section of Montana where September ushers in a pre-winter appearance of grouse and pheasants signaling the advent of a new hunting season. Other activities throughout the year seem merely a prelude to this time of year.
And into his life leaps Coulter, an energetic addition to his canine household of Homer and Ann, brought into a seemingly foreign land. Coulter is described as the "runt of the litter", the last one to be selected, and the most unlikely to ever achieve any mastery of seeking out pheasants.
What emerges is a dog that transcends bird hunting and lands smack dab into the heart and soul of his owner.
For anyone who has ever treasured the companionship of a dog-loved and lost them-- this book is a tribute. It is also a reminder of the pure things in life that school a person in the important elements of being alive.

5 out of 5 stars Dog lovers and naturalists will treasure this book.......2004-02-05

I originally picked up this book because of the cover. The darling GSP pup is hard to resist. However, the beautiful imagery within is what stays with me.

I am a confessed dog-lover and outdoor enthusiast. I responded to Bass's descriptions of Colter's hunting skills and of the natural world. I enjoyed Bass's humility and sense of humor. Mostly, I could just relate to how much he loves his dog. I feel the same. I could not put the book down and have reread certain passages upon finishing Colter.

A great choice for people who appreciate the magic of working dogs-dogs that live to hunt or herd or help. Also, anyone who loves the Montana wilderness would like Colter, as well.

4 out of 5 stars Not Just for Dog Lovers.......2003-09-17

First off, I'm a big fan of Rick Bass' writing. Clear, compelling, and crisp. "Colter" is definitely a story about a dog and his owner. But it transcends the heart-string pulls that might imply and manages to paint a picture of place, character, and neighborly interaction in the American West as well.

If you enjoyed Rick Bass' "Winter" or his later story collections, "Colter" might be a welcome read.

"Prayer Rugs" by Ralph Kaffel was a pleasant surprise. Instead of just another pseudo-scientific rehash of someone else's field work Kaffel has presented us with a lesson in connoisseurship. All too often someone will read all the literature and present their distillation as fact. In "Prayer Rugs" Kaffel show us his sources and when there is disagreement he shows us the differences in opinion. In the discussion of Daghestan Prayer rugs he even gives us the opinions of auction house specialists such as Mary Jo Otsi and Jo Kris. This book is not ethnology or anthropology it is about collecting Caucasian Prayer rugs and in the light it gets a solid 5 stars.

This is a intricately researched and excellently illustrated book on a subject where good informative material is hard if not impossible to find. The author obviosly knows his subject and weaves the history of the region together with a thorough examination of Caucasian Prayer rugs to create a book for both the novice and the serious collector alike. Use it for your own research or put it on your coffee table.

This is a really informative book on Caucasian Prayer Rugs. Comprehensive data on this subject is not readily available in other rug books. Text includes a brief history of trade and rug weaving in the Caucasus in the 19th century, but my favorite feature of the book is the quality and selection of the color plates of the various types of prayer rugs discussed in the book. I learned alot from it.

This book was recommended by a friend and it is exceptionally informative and well written. I would recommend it to anyone seeking more info on organic gardening. It has ideas that are cheap to do that work wonderfully!

2 out of 5 stars Organic is not a synonym for boring.......2007-07-23

This book is so bland and boring it is nearly generic. If you are at all excited by the prospect of things organic, don't buy this book. Look for something with juices flowing in the veins or you will find yourself semi-comatose and bored with organic before you begin.

This book could have been more than just a [quite generalized] reference book. It could have been an inspiration. Fortunately it's recyclable.

                                            3 out of 5 stars It's okay, but it's not the original!.......2007-05-15

I was in a used book store recently and compared the old and new versions side-by-side. I bought the old one. The old version has so much great detailed information that the new one lacks.

Don't get me wrong, the new version is "prettier". It's still got some great stuff in it you might not find in some other sources. But, it is more of a treatise or "Cliff's Notes" version--it isn't exhaustive.

Still a great reference for those new to gardening. However, it should have been called "Rodale's All-New Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening: LITE".

Rodale always does an excellent job of researching what we gardeners want to know about. And the ALL-NEW ENCYCLOPEDIA of ORGANIC GARDENING is no exception. I refer to it frequently and usually find the information I'm looking for.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Beginner's Reference (with a small "bug" of an error).......2007-01-18

I have repeatedly returned to my copy of this book, usually when I am about to embark on a garden chore and want a refresher course in the hows and whys. The alphabetical topics include "Animal Pests", "Asparagus", "Beneficial Insects", "Cold Frames", "Edible Landscaping", Garlic, "Irrigation", "Pelargoniums", "Trees" and hundreds more, all simple to locate as though you were reading a phone book. Each entry contains an encyclopedia-style summary with an organic method slant. Beginners and intermediate gardeners will find the info provided invaluable, but if you want an in-depth explanation, seek a more expert book.

Other features include a recommended reading list, an index of common plant names paired with their botanical names, and simple line drawings illustrating many of the book's topics.

That said, I was sad to see a mistake in the "tomato" entry as I was reading it just now... the book recommends planting dill near your tomatoes to attract tomato hornworms. Unfortunately, these are not the same species and killing caterpillars found on dill will simply reduce the number of swallowtail butterflies in your garden (tomato hornworms are a type of sphinx/hawk moth.) I advocate planting the dill anyway and leaving the caterpillars alone! The rest of the 5 pages devoted to tomatoes includes an overview on choosing plants or seeds, bed preparation and planting, tomato pruning tips, recommended fertilizers, how to make long-lasting tomato cages, a disease summary, harvesting information, recommended cultivars for organic growers, and tomatoes raised in small spaces.

A nice reference for the gardener who is in a hurry to get outside and plant!

                                                    Book Description

This work comprises a detailed study of Bucer's thinking on ecclesiastical office. The Strasbourg reformer exercised a great influence on Calvin, among others. This exploration does not only contribute to the knowledge of the body of thoughts and views of this often ignored reformer, whose importance is increasingly being recognised. It also contains a large amount of material which is extremely valuable for current discussion - theological and practical - on office and structure within the Church. The author has based his research on various rare editions found in libraries all over Europe. He also used many unpublished sources from the abundant archives in Strasbourg.

Such a shame. What a force for progress this man and his book could have been.
There is so much good in him and in this work. His deep love and respect for his mother and for motherhood. His urgings that education is the bedrock of progress. His hatred of drugs. His disgust for the senseless, conspicuous consumption of material goods as a false display of success. His gut-wrenching guided tour through the streets and minds of the ghetto and its subculture of drugs, violence, death, and mourning. His accounts of racism within the FBI. His disgust with the failure of inner city schools. His passion for his family. These are the bedrock values that can lead any person or people to true success.

Yet there is so much here that is harmful to our society and African Americans in particular. His incessant message that whites are responsible at a causal level for virtually every malady suffered by Black America, including his father's rape of his own daughter and his brother's decision to use and sell drugs, and to kill people. His claim that an ultra secret, anti-African American conspiracy exists, which he does not define but which is apparently both international yet American at its heart. But most of all by his condemnation of African Americans who choose a lifestyle or who hold opinions that differ from his view of what a Black should do or be. These are the messages of a failure mentality, and they lead to further wasted lives.

The many polarizing lectures he delivers in this book are comprised 95% by passionate statements of his beliefs, and 5% by assertions for which he provides some factual support. This mixture is similar to the writings and speeches of other zealots from white racists to Marxist revolutionaries. The technique is very effective. You start with a fact, ideally one that fires the emotions of the audience, and then follow with a string of loosely connected points that steadily and imperceptively diverges and departs from reality. The original and occasional fact lends an air of legitimacy to the unsupported major part of the work which nonetheless appeals emotionally to the target audience.

His overview of the drug problem is one example. He asks why we don't strike it where it's grown, in the same way that we have attacked nuclear weapons facilities and ammunition depots. He concludes that the reason is someone very powerful wants the drug business to remain, because they are profiting from it. He further claims that this power also wants drugs to flow, because stopping it would free the inner city from its drug-induced stupor. The inhabitants, "no longer anesthetized and miseducated", would then realize that they are being "targeted for drugs and alcohol, cigarettes and pork, and heart attacks, strokes, and AIDS." This book is filled with his fixation on conspiracy and devoid of other explanations. He does not mention that there may be an awful lot of people who would have reasonable objections to our bombing coca fields in Bolivia and Peru. He has no room for the many, many other views on this complex, international issue.

In fact, Mr. Powers's intolerance for other views may be his most destructive trait. He insists that all Blacks who differ fundamentally with him are "sellouts". He cites the "unity" of the Jews as the reason for their success in defending themselves against prejudice, and says that African Americans must adopt the same strategy. He fails to acknowledge that the success of any group has been, more than anything else the result of its work ethic, especially in pursuit of education. And that this is manifested by the choices that individual people have made throughout their lives to defer pleasure and amusement for study and work, until they have earned a secure place. But closely following work ethic has been a respect for each person's right to pursue his/her own values and beliefs. To follow his example of the Jews one has only to observe the heated debates occurring in Israel, and the difficulty they have in even maintaining a majority government, because of the variety of passionately-held positions. The Jews do not practice Mr. Powers's version of unity, and neither does any other successful group. Freedom of thought and expression are central to advancement The author's caustic criticisms and name-calling of African Americans who disagree with him hurts the people whom he seems to honestly want to help.

Still, I recommend that this book be read, but followed with works of other Black authors, including one which Mr. Powers repeatedly vilifies, Tom Sowell. Do this, think for yourself, and then compare.

When I bought this book I was just looking for background information on the FBI from an former African-American FBI agents perspective. The book is very insightful, and gives great details on how there is still a hostile attitude toward African-Americans in Law Enoforcement among their non-minority colleagues. It is a must read for any minority (especially African-Americans) interested in a career in Law Enforcement!

I have been an avid reader for about two years. I always enjoyed reading but not as much as I have since I started reading mostly books from Oprah's list or the literature of African and African American authors. I bought this book shortly after my son-in-law expressed a long held desire to become an FBI agent. Since he is from Haiti and is not very knowledgeable about the opression faced by American blacks. I thought that this would be a big mistake. Eyes To MY Soul not only confirmed by belief, but gave me quite an enlightening experience. It gives a powerful reminder of what our ghetto brothers and sisters face each and every day. Even more importantly, it is an autobiography so it does not give you alot of trumped up horror stories just for shock value. Mr. Powers LIVED THIS LIFE, and was able to rise up from his childhood circumstances and uplift others of his race with him. I admire and respect this man highly and consider it a privilege to have read his book. I have been telling everyone about how great this book is and especially my son-in-law. At present he is pursuing a masters degree in Informational Technology so he hardly has time to read anything else. However, I intend to keep after him until he has read this excellent story of a Black man's struggle to rise above racial confines.

I think that in this autobiograph was a great book about the life as an FBI agent. In my time reading this book I found that Tyrone Powers was from the same neiborhood my family grew up in.An in this autobiograph he said that life was hard growing up in Baltimore during the time of racisum and predicus. He also says in his book that his mother was hard on hem and that she was hard on hem because of where he lived and the things that were happening around his neiborhood.
