* Third in the bestselling and award-winning series featuring Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A little cliche, but still a good read........2006-11-24

Although this book was somewhat predictable and Ms. Coel seemed to be on her soap box environmentally, I still enjoyed the story. The mystery part of the book was exciting enough, and I still really like Father John. The book is about a large energy company wanting to put a nuclear waste dump site right smack in the middle of Wind River Reservation. Despite all the jobs that this site would yield, Vicky Holden cannot go along with the idea, and she publishes her viewpoints in the local papers as well as at local meetings. Then there is the old cowboy that Father John finds murdered in an abandoned cabin. Do these two things have something in common? Before Vicky and Father John find out, more murders occur on their Reservation. What makes these books so special are Coel's characters. They are very real and very well-drawn. This is a very good series.

5 out of 5 stars Shattered dreams.......2005-08-29

"The Dream Stalker" has everything you could want in a mystery novel -- a suspensful and compelling story, well-drawn characters and setting, an intriguing glimpse into the Arapaho culture and frustrated love.

About the only complaint I could make is I wish Margaret Coel would continue the stories of her supporting characters from novel to novel. For example, her last book ended with Susan, Vicky Holden's daughter, in drug treatment. In "The Dream Stalker," it is mentioned Susan has returned home to L.A., but nothing else is stated about her recovery or her strained relationship with Vicky. Coel is so good at making me care about her characters, I want to see what happens to all of them.

However, that's a small quibble about a series that is rapidly becoming one of my favorites.

I also want to note the villain in "The Dream Stalker" was one of the most chilling killers I've ever encountered in mystery fiction, a person made all the scarier because of their absolute conviction that what they are doing is justified.

5 out of 5 stars Have just found this series and.......2005-04-25

simply love it! Read Wife of Moon first and now Dream Stalker...what a teriffic storyteller. Likeable characters, interesting local color and I learned a bit about Plains indians I did not know. If you like Hillerman, you will like this series, I think.

4 out of 5 stars Third book of the series.......2003-11-22

The attraction that Father John O'Malley and Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden feel for each other deepens in this third book of the series. Father John receives an anonymous phone call late at night, requesting a meeting with him. When he goes to the meeting place, he finds an unidentified body whom he is sure is the caller. Meanwhile Vicky is working to oppose a transaction which would allow a ranch to be turned over to a company which will use it for a nuclear storage site. More people die, and Father John is afraid that Vicky will be next. There are abductions, car chases, and other scarey moments while the Jesuit priest and the Arapaho attorney pursue the murderer. There are also the usual glimpses into the Arapaho culture which always enrich Margaret Coel's books. This is another good entry to this series.

3 out of 5 stars Short on Science.......2002-08-31

I have bought Ms. Coel's other mysteries partly because her protagonists and mysteries are interesting, and partly because they are set in my home state. In this particular story, however, science was murdered in addition to a drunken cowboy, a tribal chairman, and odd assorted other unfortunates. Irritating careless errors certainly decreased my enjoyment of the book and detracted from the storyline. For instance, Ms. Coel has lightning flashes that follow closely after claps of thunder, "underground lakes" that are filled up with water pumped into oil wells to increase production, and "one to the minus six" being "much less" than "one in ten million"...(one to the minus six equals one). I found myself hunting for the next mistake instead of enjoying the mystery. Better luck next time, I hope.

          Book Description

THIS IS THE WAY THE TENSION BUILDS...

          ...Michael Tangerinephant has problems.

          He is:
-On the outs with his cyborg-prostitute girlfriend.
-In trouble with his (formerly) criminal syndicate MOB, Inc.
-Set up to take the fall in a trillion dollar finance scam.
          -Abducted by TV-obsessed aliens.

The Chill are strange. The Chill are deranged. Unpleasant things swim towards the surface in their presence. They might make Mike live out their fantasies. They might never let him go. They might make him crazy. If he isn't already.

A swirling vortex of science fiction, satire, and surrealism, TANGERINEPHANT will suck you in and chop you up into moonrocks.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Middle schoolers should read this instead of Harry Potter.......2006-10-05

The bizarro genre is characterized by funny, inventive novels which, though worth reading, are never very deep or long. Many would make ideal reads for older children and teenagers. So it is with this book.
Michael Tangerinephant lives in a dystopian future world where metal body enhancements are common and the Mafia has inexplicably been taken over by Scotsmen. Prostitutes have vaginas in their armpits, and humans can put themselves into the Internet as in SNOW CRASH (unlike in that novel, they have to watch out for advertisements). I agree with the reviewer who said there isn't enough background detail in the book-I'd love to see more of what this guy's imagination can dream up.
TANGERINEPHANT is a good novella to bring to the therapist's waiting room-it's long enough to last the wait but not too longwinded or distracting. Just make sure to put it in your mom's purse before you go into the office!

5 out of 5 stars The title is just the beginning........2006-04-12

Maybe you can't judge a book by its cover, but this book has a great cover and a title that introduces Kevin Dole 2's unique word play.

The book was at times: weird; laugh out loud funny; thought provoking. But, what I loved most about it is the way Kevin Dole 2 played with language throughout the course of the book.

          A very fun read.

3 out of 5 stars Future book lacks Description of Future.......2006-01-17

If you are looking for a book that will suck you in, look no further; this book will keep you reading as you cook, eat, and . . . well, you get the idea. Though Dole's writing style is unique, if you are hoping to have a futuristic society painted in your mind, this is not the book for you. As I read my mind continually racked my knowledge of Star Trek, Blade Runner, The great comic book Transmetropolitan, Farhenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, and The Fifth Element. Is this future dark and dirty or bright and colorful? Is there smog? Food in pill form? Are there bars? Chicken Wings? Libraries? Art? What is this "Camp" and why did our protagonist go? How are babies made? Dole has given us about 50% of what could have been an excellent science-fiction novel. His writing style provocative and story-line original and human, all it needed was an undertanding of the society's workings and Tangerinephant's relationship to it.

5 out of 5 stars Bizarro Cyberpunk Fiction.......2005-06-10

This is a great book! If you're into cyber punk-like oddities -- by authors like William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, Jeff Noon, or Jack Womack - then you will love it.

But...it's a bit weirder than the work of the aforementioned authors. It's about this guy, Michael Tangerinephant, who already has enough problems to deal with on earth, but also now has to endure constant alien abductions by The Chill. Only instead of anal probings, he has to star in a variety of bad TV shows.

The real star of the book is its futuristic dystopian setting. It is extremely imaginative.

We already worry that our food makes us fat, dull, disease-prone, and sleepy. Now we have to worry that it also makes us crazy. According to certified clinical nutritionist Carol Simontacchi, the food industries that give us packaged, processed, artificially flavored, chemical-ridden, artificially colored, nutrient-stripped pseudo foods such as sodas, processed soups, sugared cereals, and fiberless bread "wantonly destroy our bodies and our brains, all in the name of profit." We Americans (adults and children) eat 200 pounds of sugar and artificial sweeteners each year. Our children's test scores and grades drop. We become violent, illogical, moody, depressed, drug-addicted, and crazy. The reason, according to the author, who is pursuing a doctorate in brain nutrition, is that we're starving our brains with lack of nutrition.

This isn't a process that begins when teenagers start snacking on sodas, chips, and ice cream. Rather, this nutrition deprivation starts in the womb: mom doesn't get the right nutrition (essential fatty acids, high-quality protein, unrefined carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water), so baby is born already brain-nutrient deficient, says the author. Infant formulas, processed baby food, and sugared cereals exacerbate the problem through the stages of childhood, with kids not getting the nutrition their growing brains need. Simontacchi also skewers prepared foods, additives, over-processed grains, school vending machines, and fast-food chains.

This book isn't only about children. Starbucks and its ilk get a "Crazy Maker Award" for "encouraging us to self-medicate with stimulating beverages that mask the symptoms of nervous system and adrenal exhaustion." We adults are genuinely fatigued, but instead of getting the sleep and rest we need, we succumb to the "marketing hype of sophisticated companies that convinces us that self-medicating with an addictive substance is the answer to our energy crisis." You may not accept all Simontacchi's views, but once you've read this book, you won't reach for a café latte or feed your kids sugar-frosted cereal with the same complacency. --Joan Price

          Book Description

An unprecedented and impeccably reported look at how American food manufacturers and their "products" may be endangering our minds.

In The Crazy Makers, nutritionist Carol Simontacchi reveals that brand-name consumer food producers may be putting items on the market that redefine what we commonly think of as "food." From infant formulas to supposedly health-conscious packaged meals, these pseudo-foods may be causing chemical levels in the brain to rise to alarming heights.

Based on new research, epidemiological evidence, and a formal study of schoolchildren's eating habits conducted by Simontacchi, The Crazy Makers will open your eyes as it identifies how the latest food products may be driving you crazy-and will tell you what you can do about it. Notes. Index.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on nutrition in today's world........2006-08-10

The book describes the essentials to providing excellent nutrition for babies, children and teens specifically when it comes to brain development and health. It details the dangers of allowing the food industry to decide what your kids should eat. If you want your kids or future kids to thrive and succeed in life, this is book hits the importance of doing it right from the start.

          5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2005-11-26

          I really enjoyed this book.
I have been saying forever that sugar and formula is what's wrong with health and kids now a days.
I think everyone needs to read this book, and really rethink what you are feeding your kid.
I wonder if the food company is in cahoots with the entertainment business, working together to the dumbing down of America?

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!.......2005-11-11

Not only does it get the sensationalist words "crazy" and "destroying' worked into the title, but it also ties them into other such sensitive topics as (1) our brains and, (2) our children. The only other things it could have mentioned is (1) the elderly, (2) kitty-cats, (3) puppies, (4) rainbows, (5) gumdrops and sugarplums, and, (6) Jesus. Maybe the author can re-think the title to work all those things in to make it more dramatic and appealing to the masses.

But, as for the book itself, I was amazed. I had no idea that my brain was being so adversely impacted by the food industry, particularly when I have so strictly followed Dr. Colbert's diet outlining what Jesus would eat and how Jesus would cook it. Nevertheless, it seems the food industry has it in for me, and for you (and for themselves). Apparently though, the food industry, while destroying our brains, is only *harming* our children. Their brains are being left intact. Thank God for that. We have to have some generation to look after us. But, I'll admit, I'll never look at a box of Ding-Dongs again.

5 out of 5 stars The Crazy Makers: How the Food Industry Is Destroying Our Brains and Harming Our Children.......2005-09-30

I Loved this book. I bought it on a whim at a local natural foods store and have
bought a few more to give to my friends and family. It is a very complete, yet readable
handbook on all the additives, chemicals and such that is put into our foods. It is definitely something I would recommend to anyone with a passion or interest in the
          foods they eat.

I watched my husband glace at the book and he just started reading it and about 15 minutes later I realized he was still reading it. He doesn't even cook! Anyway, inspired by his attention to this tome, I grabbed my tea yesterday and hung out on the pet's couch for a good read! I was not disappointed! I now feel I wouldn't be shy about cooking with exotic mushrooms. I can't wait to try the mushroom chile (which I read about in Metropolitan Home mag.)for the Superbowl Party tomorrow. Wow! Thanks Amy Farges!

I bought this to give as a gift, and ended up cooking from it, and now it's ALL MINE. The recipes cover just about every kind of cuisine, including comfort foods like cream of mushroom soup, etc. I knew about portobellos, but man, this portobello salsa was way off my radar! I did it ahead and it was incredible! Served it with tortilla chips. Another cool thing is that in the back, there's a page for each mushroom , w/ a picture, and how to store and cook them. I give this cookbook my best-ever rating!

5 out of 5 stars Can't Keep It On My Bookshelf!!!.......2000-08-30

I bought my first "Horseman's Bible" many years ago when I became a first time horse owner. I constantly picked it up a read, and re-read it as situations came up, as they ALWAYS do with horses. I respected the knowledge in the book so much that I started giving one as a gift to every one I knew who bought their "first horse" hoping that they would benefit as I did from its vast reserve of knowledge and understanding of what a horse truely is. Not having a copy handy as I gave my last one away, I hope I can quote one sentiment from the book. We are foremost "Stewards" of the horses we keep and love, we can never truely own such a magnificent beast, just care for it the best we can while we have them with us. I am ordering two copies today, one to keep and one to give to my cousin who just purchased her first horse and needs all the help she can get!!!! Obviously, I highly recommend this book. It is NOT a sentimental story book about horses, it is a common sense guide on what to do and especially what NOT to do with an animal that weighs over 1,000 pounds and has an animals mind and behaviour patterns. It is also a life time responsibility that should not be entered into lightly, but with great forethought and sufficient funds to do things "right" by a companion that can live close to thirty years if well taken care of. Buy this book BEFORE you buy your horse, you will never regret it.

          1 out of 5 stars Disappointing!.......2000-08-17

From the title of this book, I imagined that it would be something which I would read out of each night. With such an image in my mind, I got this book, but did not get past the first few pages. There are phrases such as "horses have no conscience". This made me thing that the author had never been near a horse before!

4 out of 5 stars A basic reference book for older children and adults.......2000-03-05

This is a classic, plus the price is right. A much, muchearlier edition of this book (copyright 1966) was one of the firsthorse books I purchased; and it is still on my shelves, although a bit tattered. It has a little bit of everything for the beginner, in a easy to read but not insulting style. Some on confirmation, some on riding, some on horse care, some on feeding, some on breeds, etc. I used it as primary curriculum while tutoring a reading student, who was also horse crazy. Later, the excellent drawings were useful in teaching the English names for the parts of a horse to an ESL class of Spanish speaking farm workers. I think this book and "Happy Horsemanship" should be the first two horse books any new-to-horses adult or child should read.

The Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse is a must read for any serious student of the Bible. Especially the book of Revelation which this book is a study of. This book would also be an excelent companion for the exciting 'Left Behind' series by Dr. Tim Lahaye and Jerry Bridges. Wish it was still in print.

4 out of 5 stars A good book, but not my first recommendation of his books.......2007-04-20

a good book about how to really see things in nature, not just the obvious. it also goes into some of the basic and more technical aspects of tracking people and animals.

however, i felt that it was to much in the middle of basic tracking and very technical tracking. personally if you want the basics of tracking i would buy his book entitled "Tom Brown's Field Guide to Nature and Survival for Children". this lines out basic tracking skills very well so that a child can understand, but i have found it very helpful in my practices. And if you want very technical tracking advise i would get his "Science and Art of Tracking" book.

And pretty much all of his books go through some nature observation guide. this one just has a lot more excercises for practicing it.

4 out of 5 stars A mind-opening book about nature and the outdoors.......2005-10-05

I've read this book twice, and both times I've learned (and re-learned) to see and feel and experience more when I go outdoors, go camping, or take wilderness trips.
The book teaches a lot of good stuff about tracking, but its best material, I think, is its section on nature observation: on learning to have a wider range of vision, to see more peripherally, to be quieter, and to be more aware of one's surroundings.
"The tragedy in life is not what men suffer, but what they miss," Tom Brown quotes Thomas Carlyle as saying, and this book is all about helping you not to miss so much.
The book contains great advice and tips on building sweat lodges (to cleanse your body and mind and increase your awareness), on getting more out of your outdoor experiences,on getting closer to wild animals, and on letting the outdoors free life from its tensions.
The book is also full of little exercises designed to heighten your awareness.
My favorite is one where you use sticks to frame a single square foot of outdoor ground. Then you stare at it from a standing position, making note of everything within it: little rocks, a plant, a hole here or there. Then you kneel down and study it from that level: all of a sudden you can see mouse pellets, tiny bugs, and seed husks around the holes on the ground. Then you get down on your stomach and put your face right up to it: suddenly you can see where beetles have nibbled the plant's leaves, you can see the footprints of mice, and you can see the holes are deep, and wider than you'd thought. Then, after about an hour of fascinated scrutiny, you stand up, and the square foot, and all the ground around it seems to pop and buckle, as the realization of how much was all around begins to hit you. The ground seems writhing with life and interesting things, and you can never look around you the same way again.
                  It's very cool.
I highly recommend this book. Its lists of various scat and tracks are a bit long for casual cover-to-cover reading, but as a guidebook its information is thorough and fairly complete. Read it, learn from it, and add new depth to the way you view the world.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable guide to outer and inner awareness.......2003-01-04

This is an unusual book in which hard core tracking tips are blended with instructions on cultivation of the inner silence. As opposed to other stories about tracking which border the domain of fiction (e.g., "The Way of the Scout"), Brown gives us in this Field Guide practical advice on reading animal tracks, constructing shelters etc. The tips on "Nature Observation" in this field guide are unsurpassed by any other tracking book I know. TB provides us with priceless descriptions of what happens the moment we enter the forest - that is, how the alarm signal spreads from the birds to mammals and how long it takes for it to subside. The forest he is talking about is a living entity, where everything is connected and where one can plug into the circuits of the information flow by learning to listen to the sounds, by studying the terrain and the wind and by knowing how to camouflage and mask one's smell. The book provides useful info on various types of walking/stalking in the woods. Finally, there is deep reverence for nature something which occurs when one has learnt to be silent amidst the whispering trees (no mean trick for the Westerner who tends to function through the head). Tom Brown has learnt the inner silence tricks from his Apache teacher ("the Grandfather") and trackers might find this book useful for learning more about Native American attitudes toward nature. A similar approach to nature is encountered in some of Paul Rezendes' books (which i also recommend). In short, this book will be useful to those who are interested in approaching nature on its own terms. It will inspire the beginners in tracking and complement knowledge of hard core SAR UTS trackers (:)

This book gave me a renewed enthusiasm for nature and an urgent need to be outdoors, I wanted to do everything he was teaching as I was reading it. I went right out and practiced his techniques as soon as possible during and after reading this book. I've never seen so much wildlife as I do now. It has made me a better outdoorsman and has given more meaning to my time spent outdoors. I can't wait to share it with my father who taught me some basics of tracking when I was a boy. This book taught me all the stuff I wished I had learned long ago, now i must make up for lost time I spent with my eyes closed to the things that connect me with the earth.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Hiking and Camping.......2000-09-20

This book guides you to a deeper communion and awareness of nature not possible through the ordinary outdoor pursuits most authors write about. Here you will learn the basics of camouflage, observation, and movement which opens the door to seeing more in the outdoors then you thought possible. After reading this book for the first time, I took Brown's advice and simply sat down in the woods. Within fifteen minutes a woodchuck came blithely walking by totally oblivious to my presence. That was more wildlife than I had seen on a dozen previous hikes or camping trips. It was the starting point of twenty years of exploration and discovery and the end of mindlessly walking along trails and missing everything along the way. In this book Brown takes you beyond the "veneer" most other tracking guides cover. He helps you learn how to age tracks, identify the animal's sex, and read the animal's movements and emotions from the shapes and forms found around the track. Brown teaches through stories and experiences that brings tracking to life. This is in stark contrast to the dull didactic recitation of measurements and readings most other books provide. If you ever wondered if Native Americans could really track like the Apache in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the answer is here because Brown learnt everything he knows from an Apache Native American. Are you tired of returning from long hikes or camping trips only to feel that you somehow missed something? then get this book and welcome to Tom Brown's incredible world of adventure and discovery. Keep one thing in mind however, this book is only the beginning. It's up to you to decide how far along this path you want to walk.

5 out of 5 stars not a showcase or cafe book.......2007-08-30

good theory for teachers, useful articles from other lecturers and useful type theory that works. No colorful and amazing samples on pages. It's totally theory! worth it.

2 out of 5 stars did I really buy this book?.......2006-04-28

Reading this book is difficult, I don't know if I'll be able to get through it.

12 point type gets a 12 point paragraph indent, 14 point type gets a 14 point paragraph indent, this book has paragraph indents of .5 inch, which suggests the type should be 36 points

It's as if the book is trying to hypnotize a person into being a good typesetter, my eyes zigzagged back and forth, and this voice started saying, "you will be a good typesetter, you will be a good typesetter." Something about the excessive white space at the beginning of the paragraphs was putting me to sleep. So any good information about typesetting will be hard to extract.

5 out of 5 stars The basics of teaching and learning typography.......2005-03-09

It's important to learn the elements of type before embarking on an exploration of graphic design: that's what makes Steven Heller's The Education Of A Typographer so important. Essays, interviews, and course syllabi explore the basics of teaching and learning typography, with writing by top designers and educators providing insights on the finer points of typography. Discussions cover everything from how to choose type among the hundreds of choices available to common elements of sloppy typographical choices, how to identify and eliminate them, and understanding typographic delivery to different audiences.

4 out of 5 stars Good, for the right reader.......2005-02-21

The right reader teaches typography and wants, at minimum, to know that [s]he is not alone out there. This book offers a number of essays, Q&A with praticing educators, and a few syllabi. This book consists of 40 or so brief pieces. That's way too many for any one voice ot dominate, but certainly covers a wide range of views and practices. There are a few minor gems here, including discussions of the unique needs of Hebrew and Arabic, and about the 'voice' of a printed text. There's no organized bibliography here, but the careful reader will be rewarded with a good long list of titles, some of which are sure to be unfamiliar.

Though by no means unanimous, there was wide agreement that hand-work exercises, using physical media, are helpful or necessary for understanding what computerized systems are doing. I have to agree. If nothing else, computer users have a tendency to treat the quirks and oddities of their chosen software as laws of nature. This inflexibility stands in sharp contrast to most students' use of ink, paper, and all the rest, where their goal is to push the medium to its limit or beyond. Because they have no way to adapt the software tools to their concepts, they constrain their concepts to the tools, sometimes unknowingly. Users of physical media may at least have the vision to see beyond those limits.

The practicing typographer won't find much to relate to here, except a formal statement of what was probably done to her in the classroom. This book is about training educators, not about training the practitioners themselves, so there is very little discussion of the concrete design issues.

This book has a rather narrow intended audience: type educators. Others (like me) can still read it, and still get some measure of insight into typography and typographers.

                          Book Description

This generous, representative sampling from the daybooks of Carl Van Vechten, one of the most significant figures of the Harlem Renaissance, is a rich resource and major reference tool for reconstructing the culture of 1920s New York, the social milieu during Prohibition, and more. Bruce Kellner has provided copious, informative notes identifying central figures and clarifying details.

Between 1922 and 1930, Van Vechten kept a daily record of his activities. Not exactly diaries, but more than appointment books, the daybooks record his daily comings and goings as well as the alliances, drinking habits, feuds, and affairs of a wide number of luminaries of the period. They catalog tales of bootlegging, literary teas, shifting cliques of artists and writers, cabaret slumming, sexual and social peccadilloes, and a seemingly endless sequence of parties.
