Book Description

Conjuring up the last golden days of the Raj and the turbulent early ones of Indian rule, this suspenseful and atmospheric first novel—the winner of the Crime Writer Association’s Debut Dagger competition—draws the governor of Bengal, local police authorities, and visiting Scotland Yard detective Joe Sandilands into an increasingly baffling and bizarre case of serial murder. It is 1922, in Panikhat. In March of each of the past five years the wife of an officer in the Bengal Greys has met with a violent and terrifying death. One died in a fire, another by a cobra bite, the third from a fall, and the fourth victim drowned. Of course, they all might have been accidents, while the death of Captain Somersham’s pretty young wife, who was found with her wrists cut, could be ruled a suicide. One link between the five cases, however, points to foul, disturbing play. On the anniversary of the deaths small red roses mysteriously appear on the women’s graves. With only a few days to go before the end of March and with faith in the new Western science of psychological profiling, Joe Sandilands finds himself running a race against time and a serial killer who alone knows the recipient of the next Kashmiri rose. “The atmosphere of the dying days of the Raj is colorfully captured.”—Sunday Telegraph “Introduces an intelligent author and an interesting investigator.”—Morning Star

4 out of 5 stars Satisfying Whodunit.......2007-10-07

This historical mystery set in India in the 20s amid a British colonial army outpost isn't terribly ambitious in its plotting or period detail. The murders are firmly of the "cozy" variety ala Agatha Christie; so don't look for a great deal of grit or realism. But the book does have charm. The stalwart hero and the plucky heroine may seem a bit stock, but when the author gets them talking they come pretty vividly to life, so do the rest of the regiment. There's a good resonant reveal at the end, as well. The whole thing has more of the feel of a good period melodrama like The Letter or Conduct Unbecoming than it does a really rich historical novel that transports you back to its setting.

5 out of 5 stars A very good mystery.......2007-07-22

Good characters, good plot, interesting setting. Have been re-reading Christie, Marsh, Peters, for lack of good new writers.

I always hate Barbara Cleverley's books to end. THis was no exception.

3 out of 5 stars Satisfying, But A Little Too Traditional For Me.......2006-11-03

I love stories of the British Empire, like Rudyard Kipling's SOLDIERS THREE. And I love stories about rebellious Twenties youth (especially female youth,) like LOVE FOR LYDIA. So when I heard about this Indian mystery set in the 1920's, it seemed like a perfect fit.

To be sure, I liked these characters. I liked plain old Joe, the London detective pressured to find a killer in hot, sweaty India. I liked Nancy, the trim, efficient, sexy young officer's wife who helps Joe crack the case. I liked Naurung, the loyal Sikh officer who works with the sexy man and woman team, and looks the other way during the love scenes. I even liked Midge, the flighty little thing who just might be the killer's final victim.

The thing I didn't like, is that we got lots of British India, but not enough of the Twenties mood. We know that the British Empire is on its last legs, and that things are changing in India. We know that the young have seen horrible casualties in the Great War, a war that did nothing to make England or the Empire stronger. Just the opposite in fact.

What we don't see, however, is how this changed the characters. All of the officers (and their wives) are just as "sold" on the idea of England and empire as they were before the war. There's not a hint of rebellion, boredom, or discontent among the ladies. Everyone's drinking, yes, and enjoying the regimental festivities, but there's no real sense of reckless or feverish abandon -- no sense of burning rebellion or passions under the surface. All the characters, good and bad, are too noble and self-sacrificing. Nancy cheats on her husband, but only for the highest motives. Midge the little flirt is spoiled and reckless, but she never really challenges authority in any way. There's no sense that her life will be any different than her mother's -- just with a happier ending. Joe is a lower class man, who has been allowed to rise, but he never challenges the class system directly. Even the killer seems to be totally commmitted to the codes of his birth.

Is there a rebel in the house?

4 out of 5 stars rethinking this author.......2006-05-09

I wasn't too enamored of Ragtime in Simla, but this book (the author's first) was actually pretty good. She starts with a lot of action once again, but this time has a story that hangs together and moves along, as well as including more detail about life in India at the time. A mystery is necessarily plot driven, and she has it center on a group of serial murders in a community over a period of years, always a good device. The situation in fact gets downright scary and I had trouble putting it down near the end. The story is definitely told from the British point of view more than the Indian, but there is nothing wrong with this. A novel doesnt have to be 100% politically correct to everyone or present all possible points of view to be effective as long as the author keeps his own views out of it. I did learn more about Joe's character, including that he is less upstanding than portrayed in the second book, jumping into an affair with a married woman. The sex scene out in the wilderness made me wonder, however, weren't they worried that a 12-foot king cobra might shoot out of the bush and take a bite of them (it would have put a damper on my enthusiasm) and how was Nancy going to explain to her husband how she got tanned all over?

Also, some reviewers were obsessing about the Mourning Cloak butterfly that figures in one of the deaths. I don't think it is rare today, not in North America or in the Eastern Hemisphere, but I have to say it is really cool looking and well worth checking out its color photos on the web. While you hear that butterflies only live a day or so, this one lives for 10-11 months. One thing I like in a book is a piece of information that leads me to something else that is interesting.

This book was much more enjoyable than Ragtime in Simla. The only thing is that I wish the publishers would quit referring to this as the final days of the Raj. This is so misleading that Daedalus Books actually put in their catalog that this book takes place in the 1940s after the end of World War II. I couldn't understand why the second book took place 20 years earlier, which is why I bought that one.

    5 out of 5 stars Every Angle.......2006-12-31

A teenage boy travels up a winging road along Crooked Brook, to find a sign advertising for an apprentice of a wizard of the pyromancy disciple. He, Douglas Brightglade, applies, and is soon put to work learning what is needed to be a good pyromancer.

Soon, Dead Winter, a very cold winter, sets in. The people of Dukedom begin to starve and freeze. Douglas, and his master, Flarman Flowerstalk, set about helping the residents of Valley make it through the winter.

Then the journeys and battles begin...

Don Callander is skilled at showing many sides of the story, not just the main character's point of view. Chapters in the book are even from the point of view of the lesser-evil characters. I believe that this is so that the reader can see the stark contrast between them, and the pure evil king, who is so evil that there isn't a point of view from even him.

4 out of 5 stars Simplistic, But Fun.......2001-08-09

The first time I read this book, I was about sixteen, and I loved it. I liked the characters and the style of the writing. I couldn't wait for the inevitable sequels. However, when I read it again, only two years later, it wasn't quite the same. I read the whole book and I couldn't put my finger on what was missing. Well, again two years passed and I read it one more time and that time I was able to identify what was less than perfect about it.

First, though, it was well-written. The book was fun. I will definitely read it again in the future and I will enjoy it. All the characters, even the little mentioned ones and the "bit players", are enjoyable and likable. The villians are bumbling and fun to laugh at and also somewhat likable. The first time I read it I got quite caught up in the plot and I enjoyed reading about the hero's training.

However, when I say the book is simplistic, I do mean it. The bad guys aren't really bad guys so much as fumbling and idiotic. They stood no chance at winning any time in the book and it was obvious. Plot holes popped up, but were ignored. It's written in such good spirit though, that it's sort of hard to complain about it.

I'd suggest this book to older children who like fantasy as a good entry point into reading more epic fantasy. (It's certainly better than a lot of the books out there for older children and teenagers, anyway.) I also suggest it for anybody who wants to read about the good guys triumph easily over the bad guys and then read about the celebration for that triumph.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite novels!.......2000-11-06

This book is one of the novels that I like the best! I usually don't read novels very often, but I made an exception for this book. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down! I've always been a fan of fantasy and sci-fi books, so I really liked Pyromancer, because it has a lot of fantasy elements in it. Basically this book is about Douglas Brightglade, a young boy who's chosen by Flarman Flowerstalk to be an apprentice Pyromancer. A Pyromancer is basically a fire wizard who conjures and controls all forms of fire. If you like this book, be sure to get the other books, as well!

5 out of 5 stars Best fantazy I've ever read (and it was translated!).......2000-07-29

This is one great book! The best fantazy I have ever read. And Having in mind that it was translated to my language (Bulgarian), it must have lost one bit of it's magic in the translation process. So far I have read it more than 20 times, but soon I'll read it in original (English), to gain on the lost effect.

    Wonderful!

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!.......1999-11-19

I loved this book, It takes a while to get into it, but once you are it is a wonderful story, makes me wish I lived in a land where such powerful magic existed, I can't wait o read Aquamancer :)

          Book Description

Fitness expert Adam Zickerman presents a revolutionary exercise program – slow strength training – that will forever change the way people work out.

The Power of 10 seems to contradict nearly everything we're accustomed to hearing about exercise. Forget hours on the treadmill, and forget daily visits to the gym. This new program offers 20 minute workout sessions, once or twice per week, with an alluring emphasis on rest and recovery on your days off. The principle behind The Power of 10 is simple: by lifting weights in slow motion, making each rep last 20 seconds (10 seconds lifting and 10 seconds lowering) instead of the typical 7 seconds, you can maximize muscle transformation. The short workouts are so effective that your body will need days to recover and repair properly. Studies have shown that such routines can increase lean body mass, help burn calories more efficiently, and prevent cardio–vascular disease more effectively than aerobic exercise alone.

5 out of 5 stars slow lifting feels better.......2007-10-10

If you're interested in the idea of lifting weight slowly, there are 3 books, that I am aware of, to consider:

          1) Super Slow: The Ultimate Exercise Protocol, by Hutchins
          2) The Slow Burn Fitness Revolution, by Hahn
          3) Power of 10, by Zickerman

To sum up 1-3: lift weights slowly to help lessen momentum so you are lifting the weight using as much muscle as possible, which will lead to muscle failure, and can help reduce the possibility of injury. Also be wary of the stress caused by aerobics. Work out less per week so you have time for a real life, and follow a sensible diet.

Note that 1-3 all are preachy about weights being superior to health over aerobic exercise, although 3) is much less so. Also note that they don't seem to say 'get rid of' cardio, but that weightlifting provides some cardiovascular benefits itself, and to do aerobics as a supplement never as a substitute.

          Some miscellaneous comments:

          1) reads like a dissertation or a scientific manual, while 2) and 3) are popular reading, 3) moreso.

I like the comparison to taijiquan (t'ai chi ch'uan) that 1) makes.

Dislike the endless "this worked for me!" anecdotes in 1-3.

          3) seems to have zero references.

          2) and 3) take a lot of material from 1).

          3) doesn't seem to be against stretching, but rather says stretching is built into the slow moving full range of motion system.

Final verdict? Get 3) because it is less preachy, costs less, and presents the main ideas from 1) in a more accessible form.

          5 out of 5 stars It's working for me.......2007-08-24

I have been working out at home now for 4 weeks using one of the routines from Power of 10 and the wife has been noticing the pounds melting off around the waist. My sister noticed I was looking trimmer and she too has just bought the book. I love the work out because I am finally losing weight that has hung on to me despite the fact I bike to work 7 miles each way 3 or 4 times a week. With this work out, using just dumb bells and my own body weight, I get a deep work out in just 15 to 20 minutes (Though the book focuses on gym workouts, it also provides several workouts that can be done at home and on the road). As a beginner I try to work out 2x a week, but often times I have only worked out once a week because I felt I needed a little more rest before hitting the weights again.

5 out of 5 stars Great sense and sense of humor.......2007-08-24

Zickerman's humorous style makes this book fun to read even though you are reading a book about pain (otherwise known as working out). He is right on the money about weight training verses aerobics. Tons of personal success stories are very motivating.

5 out of 5 stars Great program for a person with little time.......2007-04-14

I have been doing the Power of 10 workout for 1.5 years now. I learned about it while watching a news program by Barabara Walters (embarrassingly enough for me, hate to admit I watch that much TV). In any case, I was a working mother with a toddler and an infant ... seriously out of shape and also overweight. I had no time to exercise, but I was miserable. In my 20s, I had been really fit and exercised obessively for several years. I thought I would at least give this program I try; I could commit to going to the gym once (or twice) a week for 30 minutes.

The book is easy to read and explains the principles of strength training well. The nutrition program includes some good, reasonable advice, but I have to admit I haven't really followed it closely since I like food. I eat what I want, but try to eat reasonable portions. In the past 1.5 years I've only lost 12 pounds, but I've had a complete body makeover. I feel strong, my posture is better, and I've gone down two sizes. Most importantly, I feel fit. Last year (six months into training on my own) I visited NYC and had a session with Adam. It was a great experience, and I wish I could train on a regular basis at his gym as I know I'd be much further along. With a trainer and his special equipment, I had a much more effective workout. Nonetheless, the experience showed me how to amp up my own Power of 10 workout.

All thing's considered, this is a great program for someone who is strapped for time. If you're new to strength training, you might be discouraged by the sore muscles, but if you can take the burn and rest through the soreness, you'll see great results.

I'm still no where near the size or fitness level I had in my twenties, and officially I'm still "overweight" (BMI=27) but my percent body fat is in the normal range. No one can guess my weight accurately, they're always 15-25 pounds too low. The most important thing is that I'm not spending four hours a day working out like I did when I was superfit. These days, my minimum goal is one Power of 10 workout per week (20 minutes), plus cardio twice a week (30 minutes max) and some yoga for stress relief and flexibility. The program keeps producing results and I continue to whittle away at the fat.

          5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-04-13

I had tried this workout a few years ago on my own at the gym and was never quite sure if I did it right. Fortunately I live in NY and work close enough to the actual studio that Mr. Zickerman owns. I scheduled my first workout with one of his personal trainers for yesterday April 12th and can honestly say that I am HOOKED! The workout is intense and my muscles felt jittery after I left, but there was this kind of strange feeling of being happy afterward. For someone who NEVER really feels that way or perhaps 2% of the time, I became a believer. This morning I woke up feeling not exactly the same way, but still on a high and wanting to go right back to the gym to experience it all over again. I usually dread intense workouts and have tried to convince myself in all manner of ways that working out is good for me. But because I never experienced what some call a "high," I thought that it was only in a person's head and you had to have a certain kind of personality for it. So NOT true! Highly recommended!

Vegetarian Express claims that each of its recipes can be prepared in 28 minutes or less. If preparation time sometimes stretches to 40 minutes on a few of the more complicated recipes, it hardly matters, for you end up with an extraordinarily delicious, low-fat meal in as much time as it takes for the local pizza place to deliver one of its greasy pies. This book was written with busy people in mind: folks who like to eat well but don't have the time to spend steaming, blanching, soaking, and simmering after a full day of work. Instead, Nava Atlas and Lillian Kayte encourage cooks to use prepared foods as often as possible: canned chickpeas, frozen spinach, and quick-cook rice add up to a blissful curried chickpea stew; frozen corn, canned olives and tomatoes, and tortillas combine to make a dynamite Mexican lasagna. The book is divided into sections on grains, pastas, sandwiches, and more, including recipes for side dishes to compliment each entree.

Accompanying each recipe is a checklist for ingredients; a breakdown of the calories, grams of fat, and protein contained in each serving; and instructions for when to begin each phase of preparation. With Vegetarian Express, even the most harried cook can prepare healthful, tasty meals in record time.

            4 out of 5 stars Helpful Cookbook.......2007-07-21

I have enjoyed this cookbook and I am not a vegetarian. The format is a little different from other more traditional cookbooks, a menu is given then the recipes, and then a shopping list. The authors try to offer easy, quick recipes for the busy home cook, and I think they succeed. Personally I like the menu ideas provided and have found the recipes easy and tasty. The recipes are all very healthful, low fat, low salt, and lots of fresh fruits & veggies.A person with limited cooking skills can easily use this cookbook because the recipes are very basic. I can understand other reviewers commenting on recipe blandness. The recipes use almost no processed ingredients and almost no salt. There are no pictures but I don't feel it hurts the book in any way. I recommend this book for anyone who needs to cook easy, healthy meals or needs some inspiration. For a vegetarian none of the recipes or ingredients are new or innovative. To a non-vegetarian this book offers a nice simple introduction to a few ingredients not normally used such as tofu and TVP. A few recipes I enjoyed: cinnamon-apple glazed baby carrots, simple sesame-soy oriental noodles, broccoli, carrot, and cashew stir-fry with tofu, basic bean burritos, and golden rice.

5 out of 5 stars Love This Book!.......2004-03-26

My husband and I are long-time vegetarians and we both love this book! The text is well-organized and a pleasure to use when hurrying out to the grocery store. The recipes are generally quite easy to make and they really do keep to 28-minute meals! Almost all of the recipes we've tried have been delicious (some just weren't right for our particular tastes) and I feel like we've uncovered a treasure of beautiful and simple-to-make delights. I love making new recipes these days...and my husband loves eating them!!!

I was dissapointed with this book. The meals are not that quick and easy. There is a good variety to choose from, and they look tasty, but I haven't made too many due to the complexity of the recipes.

Well, I really wanted to like this book. I read it like a novel then rolled up my sleeves to try some recipes... I ended up throwing a lot of food, as I couldn't get anybody else in my family to eat them! Even I could not bear to eat the leftovers. And the recipes weren't as quick and easy as I wanted. Maybe I'll have better luck with a cookbook by Jeanne Lemlin, which I will order next.

5 out of 5 stars My most used cookbook.......2002-12-18

I have at least 20 vegetarian cookbooks and this is the one I have used most. I love that the recipes include a full meal plan - main dish and side dishes, as well as suggestions like serve with bread, green salad, baked potatoes, etc. It takes a lot of thinking out of meal planning. My family has enjoyed 80% to 90% of the meals I have prepared from this book and most of them take under 30 minutes to prepare. I highly recommend this cookbook. I wish Nava Atlas would write another one like this one.

Shirley is upfront on what it takes to become a Disaster Search team. The team is the dog and handler and while the dog may have the skills the handler also has to be prepared to handle the disaster scene.

Shirley explains how agility skills can be translated into helping your dog become a Disaster Search Dog as part of her training triangle. Shirley also comprehensively lays out training goals and plans and how to implement them with your dog to make you successful in this new training.

The Appendix information is helpful for determining if your dog would be successful as a Disaster Search Dog or if your puppy would be. There's also useful instructions on how to build your own training equipment. The book uses photographs and diagrams to explain concepts to further learning.

Shirley will be a guest author at CSDogBookReview in August 2006 and many are looking forward to her visit!

            Book Description

Gambling, simply stated, is as American as baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie. Despite the best efforts of our Puritan forbearers, America has, throughout its history, been a country of rebels and gamblers. The games-pharo, poker, keno, hazard, roulette, and others-have produced objects that are highly collectible and valued by a growing number of aficionados. This wonderful new book explores the world of gambling collectibles in a way that will inform and amuse both the novice and the established collector. A myriad of gambling items are illustrated in over 400 full-color photographs. Included are some that are very rare and some that are not, but all of them are exceedingly attractive. They have about them an aura of romance and intrigue. In addition there is substantial text, helping the collector to put the items in a historical context as well as giving very practical information about building a collection.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book for starting a lawn.......2004-05-22

I planted my first lawn from scratch this Spring, and spent a lot of time reading and re-reading this book. The advice the book gave was great, particularly when it came to selecting the type of grass to plant for my particular needs and in my area.

The other reviewers are correct about the photos being not very useful, but they certainly are pretty! However, I found the author's descriptions of grass types to be very clear and putting pictures of grass types would have been redundant.

There were a few things that could have used more coverage, though. In particular, the description of the various options in boundaries and edgings was difficult to follow with very few pictures. Plus, the section on sprinklers touched on only about half of the types of sprinklers offered by my local garden center.

My neighbor across the street planted his lawn at the same time I did mine, but without the book. He's a nice guy, but his lawn is a joke! Maybe I'll loan him my book this Fall when he starts over....

3 out of 5 stars Ok but not great.......2001-08-28

The few color pictures are pointless. There is some good information, but the section on revitalizing your lawn is too small. I was looking for a general reference, but they say to aerate but never mention when you should do this (I have read this in other books) and they don't mention other techniques that I have read other places. This book would be pretty good for someone starting from scratch. If you just want to improve your lawn, buy another book.

                  Book Description

A must-have for designers, not to mention that quirky group in love with type for type’s sake (you know who you are), Typology is the most visually dynamic compendium of typefaces on the market. Steven Heller and Louise Fili, two of the most admired and respected designers working today, cover everything from the classic elegance of the late 19th century to the fractured hypermedia of today. Organized by historical era and country of origin, each section introduces the culture and aesthetic of the period, discusses how individual styles developed, and offers insights into the artistry of key typographers and foundries. Expertly assembled and thoughtfully written, no other book encompasses this wealth of type styles in historical context. Its pages are profusely illustrated with hundreds of complete alphabets, and such original artifacts as typesheets, catalogs, broadsides, posters, and many other primary source examples. In all, Typology is the long-awaited type encyclopedia destined to be a standard reference work for years to come.

                  Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not to be taken too seriously.......2007-08-04

This book is unfortunately popular in many Typology and Type and Image courses. This was a required read in one of my early core classes.

The book is mediocre all around. The beginning chapters give the reader a crash course in type through the ages, while the later chapters, commenting on the current age, are heavily opinionated and overwhelmingly biased. It is difficult to take in information while the authors allow their personal tastes and preferences to slip through so regularly.

While I suppose this book is fine for a student who is just looking to pass a quiz, or an individual who wants to dapple in typographic history to impress their friends, it isn't a resource to be taken very seriously. The book does a fairly good job in explaining the history of type setting from hot metal to the digital age and the spread of styles through different European countries but anyone truly interested in expanding their knowledge on the subject should look towards another source.

Design wise this book also lacks. While it offers a fair amount of full color large examples from each era the page set up is rather confusing and disjointed. The first page of every chapter has extremely leaded, open kerned type and an awkward image smack dab in the middle of the page. Since the text is not set in columns you must read through the image and across the page. Not too easy on the eyes since the type is so open.

This shouldn't be hailed as an excellent type resource. It is a decent illustration of various type styles explained in layman's terms.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for any designer.......2007-02-19

I purchased this book as a text book for a Type and Image class, and I was pleased all around with the book. Not only is it well-produced with great, full-color images, thick pages and a flexible yet durable cover; it is well written giving the reader a good background in type and graphic design from the Victorian era right up to and including the digital age. After reading this book, I am much more knowledgeable of designer's names, type faces they created, aesthetics and theories of design. The book is divided into chapters based on design movements such as Victorian, Art Nouveau, Dada, Avant Garde and Commercial Modernism allowing the reader to find specifically what they want. Within each chapter, they talk about how these movements affected design in different regions of the world, and they touch on major products and designers of each era and region.

This is a great book for any design student or professional to have in their library. Great content and the perfect reference book to have on hand. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book with Great Insight.......2007-02-07

I have read many type books in my career, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The examples and historic value are insightful, thoughtful, and well illustrated by examples of each movement.
I bought this book and used it several times as references for my class. This is a wonderful book, easy to read, and I would recommend this book to anyone studying graphic design.

This book stands out and I would bought this book twice because I lost the first one.

                  1 out of 5 stars A typographic abomination.......2005-12-18

It's pretty clear that the other reviewers of this book share the authors' fascination with type as a design element rather than as a means of communication.

If it were only a matter of taste, however, I'd be able to shrug it off. In fact, the authors display in the design of the text of this book their indifference -- or hostility -- to what most typographers regard as good type design for readability.

The Introduction, and the intros to each section, are set in what appears to be about 14/28 on a 7-inch measure -- far too long for comfortable reading, even with that much leading.

Worse, given such a generous measure, the text is still spaced abominably -- e.g., page 10, where a hyphen break leaves two letters from "typehouses" at the beginning of a line. Even the spacing in the narrow columns that accompany the illustrations in each section is atrocious; for people who are so concerned with the way type looks, they seem totally unconscious of the way that spacing affects color.

In many places, it's clear that the text was padded (with circumlocutions) to fit the space allotted to it on a page, and in others it appears that the spacing was adjusted to fill out the page. I won't even mention the typos...

Unfortunately for these authors, I had recently bought and read "The Complete Manual of Typography" by James Felici and "Thinking With Type" by Ellen Lupton, both of which are real books on typography that are eminently readable -- and practice what they preach. The Felici book, in particular, is a treasure.

Jan Tschichold, one of the leaders of Die Neue Typografie, ultimeately recanted and became one of the masters of classical typography. The authors of "Typology" should follow his example, and you should not buy this book if you're anything but a graphic designer who's looking for ways to use type that have nothing to do with actually reading it.

Because this is not a book to be read: it's a book to be looked at. If I'd had the opportunity to preview it in detail, I'd never have wasted the money; and the chances that I'll ever open it are slim to none, while the Felici book I mentioned earlier will be at my side whenever I set type.

                  5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2004-05-12

This book, which is a close cousin of Heller's and Fili's Deco/Modern series ("Deco Type", "French Modern", "Deco Espana", etc.), is not just a book of fonts. It has plenty of those, and in complete form, so you can use them, but the emphasis is on excellent graphic design and how distinctive, intelligently-used fonts feature in it. This is made vivid with lots of illustration (much of it in color) and lots of text, which is informative, insightful, and very analytical. This is an essential reference and educational tool: students should consider it a small investment, and I can't imagine a professional designer being without it around the office.

The emphasis is rightly placed on early to mid-twentieth century design, but the book is fairly comprehensive, with enough of the Victorian Era and the Digital Age to justify its subtitle.

The book itself is a nicely-bound softcover with thick pages and good, clear reproduction.

First published in1969, the second edition of this open, forthright story of her life reveals a deep awareness of some of the major social issues and personal problems of our time-race, colour, human relationships, mixed marriage, the search for God. With vivid descriptions of people and her surroundings, she tells of her Jamaican school days and the attitudes and prejudices which influenced her; of her life as a psychology student at London University; of the discrimination against her which came to a head when her proposed marriage to an Englishman was opposed by his family; and of her early problems of adjustment in marriage.
