Customer Reviews:
Great science mystery without being too scientific for lay people.......2006-10-24
Retired physicist Gloria Lamerino and her homicide detective fiancé Matt Gennaro are in Berkley, CA, to help her friend Elaine prepare for her wedding. Elaine's fiancé, Phil, is a fellow scientist, but he rubbed Gloria wrong from the minute she met him.
Phil's daughter's EMT work partner is shot dead by what is believed to be a mugger. Gloria is soon suspicious because of the information Phil seems to have about the shooting and the patient his daughter was helping transport when her partner was shot.
Gloria's suspicions of Phil soon alienate Elaine, but when Phil goes missing, everyone joins together to try to locate him. Plus Gloria is sure that this has something to do with his work and the shooting. Can she find him in time to save the wedding?
I really like Gloria. Even though she is a scientist, I don't feel these mysteries are written so that laymen can't understand even the scientific talk. I like that. This is a great cozy series that is such an easy read.
This one being set in California was fun. It was Gloria's old stomping grounds from years ago, so she knew people and places. Made it all more believable. I highly recommend this book and the series.
disappointing.......2006-07-07
As a retired chemist and fan of cozy mysteries I looked forward to what I thought based on the reviews would be a good new author with a scientific twist. This book is my first by Minichino. The involvement of Nitrogen in this was so superficial and sketchy as to look contrived. The two plots (nitrogen research and stolen medical supplies) were loosely tied together and very poorly developed. The connection was very forced and not convincing. The development of all the male characters was very, very poor with little dialogue. They were all vaguely there, even Gloria's fiance. The only good spot and character was the "star" Gloria and she kept me reading. But, I kept wondering when is this all going to tie together and where is the substance?
In summary, though the book had its interesting parts the overall conclusion was dissatisfaction and the feeling that it was put together to meet a publishers deadline. I might look for an earlier episode in paperback, but definitely never pop for a hardcover again.
Two Murders, Stolen Drugs, Secret Nitrogen Files, and a Missing Scientist.......2005-08-27
Retired physicist Dr. Gloria Lamerino is visiting California with her fiance, Revere Police Detective Matt Gennaro. Gloria's best friend Elaine Cody is getting married in two weeks, and Gloria and Matt are in Berkeley to help with the celebration and have a little vacation. Just as soon as Gloria and Matt arrive in California, though, trouble strikes when they learn that Tanisha Hall, a young paramedic gunned down at the door to an Oakland hospital is the partner of Elaine's future daughter-in-law. The plot thickens when they learn that the patient being transported to the hospital (who later dies of his wounds) is an Indian scientist working on highly classifed research pertaining to powerful new explosives using newly discovered nitrogen molecules. Gloria and Matt begin to suspect that Elaine's fiance Phil Chambers might be involved in the two murders. When Phil suddenly disappears, no one is sure if he's just gotten cold feet about his wedding or if he is running from the law.
There's a lot of interesting and well-tied together plot lines in this book. In addition to the mystery of the two murders and the missing Dr. Phil Chambers, there are some missing drugs and medical supplies, stolen from the ambulance company, which are found in the murdered paramedic's home. As in all the stories in this series, author Minichino sprinkles in a healthy dose of scientific knowledge. The information she gives on newly found nitrogen compounds and their use in new powerful explosives is really fascinating. The characters in this series are well-developed and very believable.
Being a former resident of the California Bay area myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the Berkeley setting. Whether or not readers are familiar with the previous books in this series, I highly recommend "The Nitogen Murder" as a very entertaining mystery.
superb scientific mystery .......2005-04-27
Retired scientist Gloria Lamerino and her fiancé Matt Gennaro are in Berkley California to attend the wedding of her close friend scientist Elaine Cody to retired chemist Phillip Chambers, a consultant to Dorman Industries. Phil's daughter Dana is still traumatized by seeing her EMT partner gunned down while bringing their patient Lakesh Patel to the hospital. Mr. Patel dies in the hospital and the killer makes off with his duffel bag but Dana brings home his briefcase what contains severed ID's under different names including access to Dorman Industries.
When Phil and Gloria meet, she isn't impressed with him but her mild feelings of disdain turn to severe anxiety when Dana confides that somehow the briefcase wound up in her father's apartment. Patel and Phil collaborated on several papers involving nitrogen weapons research. When Phil disappears, Gloria and Matt work together to try and figure out the connection between the dead scientist, the stolen research and the multiple identifications that Mr. Patel carried.
There are very few mystery authors today who can incorporate a lot of scientific data into the story and make it part of a one sitting thriller as Camilla Minichino consistently does. She makes the science understandable so reader can learn while they are being entertained. The protagonist of THE NITROGEN MURDER is spunky, strong-willed and totally loyal to her friends, which endears her to the audience. The relationship between Gloria and Matt is believable and affirms that there is life after retirement.

it breaks my heart.......2004-02-23
How can this book possibly be out of print? What madness has overtaken the human race, that junk like Gene Wolfe or Dragonlance rules the bestseller list, while this, a supreme accomplishment in the history of the American fantasy genre, languishes in relative obscurity? Jack Vance is so irresistable, so indescribable, that I won't bother to try to summarize Lyonesse; that's for fourth-grade book reports. Suffice it to say that it will haunt your dreams the way any of the other greats of the genre do, only Vance writes much better (and funnier) prose. For the love of all that is holy, get this book, and somehow or another get it back in print with a major publisher.
A Charming Changeling.......2000-12-01
Madouc, the third book in Vance's Lyonesse Trilogy, is probably the best. The first two books, Suldrun's Garden and The Green Pearl, are wonderful, but the title character, Madouc, and her search for her pedigree, are among the most charming characters and quests in fantasy. She steals the show.
Casimir, the relentlessly scheming king of Lyonesse, has learned the child he thought was his grandaughter, Madouc, is in fact a fairy changeling. That is somehow wrapped up in the mystery of Dhrun, son of King Ailias of Troicenet, of whom it was prophecied by a magic mirror that he would be the king of all the Elder Isles. Not if Casimir can help it. He wants that throne for himself.
And there are much larger, darker schemes afoot, as the evil magician Tamurello and the mysterious witch Desmei plot against Murgen, the Elder Isle's greatest wizard, who alone keeps the Elder Isles from sinking into the sea.
And into this web of political and magical intrigue wanders Madouc, determined to learn her pedigree, possessed of a bit of her fairy mother's magic and a truly wonderful charm all her own. It is Madouc who sets this novel apart from other fantasies. Vance does a splendid job creating a central figure who will beguile and amaze you.
Vance blends myths from half a dozen cultures into a seamless whole. The Elder Isles are saved, if at a terrible cost. The kingship is resolved, after a terrible war. And Madouc even learns her pedigree. The book is full of surprises, and sly references to other legends. As just one example, you will learn how the Holy Grail got to where Sir Gallahad could find it...
You should read the whole Trilogy. If for some reason you cannot, read Madouc. It's a wonderful conclusion to a wonderful trilogy.
this book is supreme........1999-08-16
Fantasy-lovers, take heed! Madouc is third in one of the greatest fantasy trilogies ever written. You will fall in love with the fairy changeling/royal princess whose search for her heritage takes you on a merry chase. Read all three of the Lyonesse books by Jack Vance-you won't regret it. A note: Madouc won the award for Grand Fantasy in the year 1990.
Product Description
This edition combines two of Joseph Pilates published works in one volume. Contrology is the complete coordination of mind, body and spirit, wrote Joseph Pilates. In Return to Life, first published in 1945, Pilates defines the concept of Contrology with specific advice regarding posture, body mechanics, correct breathing, spinal flexibility and physical education. He demonstrates his original 34 mat exercises, which are now basic repertoire in Pilates training. Each exercise is demonstrated by Pilates himself at the age of 60 in a series of photos accompanied by detailed instructions. Your Health, originally published in 1934, explains Joseph Pilates early theories about health and fitness. Its a fascinating look into the mind of the man who revolutionized fitness, and whose teachings form the foundation of a discipline now embraced by fitness enthusiasts, health educators, rehabilitation specialists, and exercise trainers around the world. Black and white, paperback, 158 pages.

Real Pilates course.......2007-08-08
I learned my first pilates mat on a specialized gym with a teacher, third in line with Joseph Pilates. Classes were really expensive and I started searching on internet for a video with the original excercises as the ones I learned. I did not have too much luck, until I saw this video and order it. It was the exact same routine that I was taught; so I left the gym and do them at home now. For any pilates course, you should always go to a licensed teacher first because if you don't you might damage your spine. There are certain positions which need help at the beginning and you can't do them on your own. After that, you can buy this DVD with confidence is really good. The purpose of the pilates workout is for flexibility, back problems and posture correction. They are excellent for herniated disk, I have two and after six months practicing pilates the pain was gone for good.
Lays it out for you. (Also, a PC alert in this review.).......2007-05-30
I have the DVD "Classical Pilates Technique - The Complete Mat Workout Series", which I love. But some of the stuff wasn't totally clear to me, such as when you start breathing in some of the exercises, even though it was touched on--maybe it's just me. So I got this book. When the book is open to an exercise, each exercise has a set of four pictures on the left page and on the right page there are complete instructions. I think it is useful as it is another view of what you are trying to do, so in complements the video I have. If I could only have either the book or the video, I would pick the DVD, but the book is nice to have.
A warning: Pilates, in a reference to the fact that a lot of other fitness teachers at the time were sick or had physical problems, referred to that incongruity as follows: "This is the '[N-word] in the wood pile.'" He used quotes to indicate that it was an expression, which it was at the time. This is on page 113, which is the second book within the book, originally published in 1934. Pilates himself had excellent health and was sure his system would give people excellent health.
Two of Pilates' Original Works.......2007-04-12
This book combines Pilates' first two books about his exercise system. You'll notice a few differences between how Pilates is taught today and how it was originally done.
The orginal writings of Joseph H. Pilates.......2007-02-09
This book is a compilation of two original works by the founder of the Pilates exercise system, Joseph H. Pilates. The first book, Pilates' Return to Life Rhough Contrology ("contrology" was the name that Pilates himself gave to his system) provides an overview of the method, including detailed descriptions of the 34 original mat exercises in the system complete with Pilates himself demonstrating via black and white photos. In the second work, Your Health, Pilates lays out some of the basic principles of contrology; concepts covered in this work include posture, body mechanics, and breathing. Those who have never read any of Pilates' original writings before will note that his passion about his work comes across as a certain smugness and conceit; in both books, he makes extraordinary claims about the benefits of the Pilates method and seems convinced it is the only way to attain true health and fitness.
Those who are familiar with Pilates matwork may also note that Joseph Pilates' own descriptions of the exercises (in Contrology) differ somewhat from how these exercises are usually presented today. For example, when lying prone, he often shows the legs raised only a few inches off the floor, whereas today, it is generally recommended to keep the legs at a 45-degree angle relative to the floor. In addition, Pilates often shows his back in a more extreme curve than what is seen in modern teachings. My guess is that these modifications have been made to the system to be more protective of the spine, especially in absence of working one-on-one with a Pilates instructor.
Although I found that Joseph Pilates' writing style was a bit dry and thus sometimes difficult to slog through, it was still fascinating to read about the technique from the founder himself. This book isn't for everyone, but I would definitely recommend it for those looking to learn more about Pilates directly from the horse's mouth.
Buon libro.
CIAU

Customer Reviews:
The Beer Man........2005-01-28
This is a very informative book from a very impressive beer connoisseur. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because he neglects Stone Brewing Company which in my opinion is one of the best Brewing Companies in the world. The main aspect of this book that is so great is that he gives reviews and descriptions of beers that a lot of people would be unfamiliar with. Such as beers from the Czech Republic. Also Michael Jackson gives critics on beers throughout the world. It is very impressive because he covers so many countries in this book. Another thing that is typical of Michael Jackson's book is his excellent descriptions of the types of beer and also the ingredients in beer. This is very educational, and if you want to know of some great beers this is a very informative guide.
If you can find a better beer guide, buy it!.......2005-01-08
I own and have read many prior versions of Michael's pocket guides. This 7th addition is his best ever. Authoritative, thorough, interesting, and humorous, Mr. Jackson's guide is without question the reference point for all serious beer tasters. I mean, the guy has tried more than 2000 beers! Try highlighting all the beers you have had that he lists, and I'll bet it's not even 10% of his tastings. I love to bring this book into a well-stocked liqour store and use it to help pick something out new for me and untested. My only complaint is that I am not aware of a new edition since the 7th came out in 2000. I also wish I had his job!
He Built the Store.......2003-11-01
Michael Jackson invented beer writing and is the acknowledged
"epicure of record," on things beery and the victuals that accompany them.
His ratings are most reliable and, better yet, they come from deep knowledge unfettered by brewers' marketing ploys or public trends.
indispensible.......2002-04-20
Another quality book from Jackson. A nice size, able to slip easily into a pocket or handbag. Details beers from around the globe in an easy to read format, rating them on an easy to understand scale. Surprising amount of information for such a small book. All you have to do is find the beer!!!
A Perfect Guide for the Traveler.......2002-02-26
This "Pocket" guide is a perfect companion (of course, there are better, human companions) for the traveling beer lover. There are concise comments and honest, useful rankings for just about any beer you will ever run across in your travels. As you'd expect, this pocket guide is easy to take with you (it's about twice as big as a wallet without all the cash and credit cards stuffed into it) and can serve as a helpful guide when trying to figure out what to order at some of the world's better drinking establishments. It's broken down by country and that's helpful as well. I once ordered all the five-star Belgian beers at a pub in Brugge and other than the trouble I got in when I returned to my hotel, this book was a perfect guide for making good decisions.
Book Description
This updated and expanded edition is packed with the knowledge about lameness Dr. Rooney has accumulated since he wrote the first edition in 1974. He explains the function and mechanics of the front and hind legs, and discusses what happens when things go wrong. He covers fractures, injuries to tendons and ligaments, muscles, the nervous system and much more. Dr. Rooney discusses the causes of lameness, how to diagnose every condition and the state-of-the-art methods of treatment. The book is full of illustrations and actual X-rays to help you understand what went wrong and what to do about it. Also featured are sections on gait analysis, biomechanics, and the horse's response to training to help you avoid problems.
Customer Reviews:
Generous rating........2005-01-06
I liked Dr. Rooney's book a lot. But I have to agree with the reader who wrote that Dr. Rooney's opinion on chiropractic isn't qualified. I gave it five stars because 99 per cent of the book is extremely useful. The 1 per cent on chiropractic can be overlooked. Still an "A" effort.
Informative, but weak in one area--chiropractic........1999-08-23
Dr. Rooney's, "The Lame Horse" is one of my favorite horse books. It's extremely informative, and readable. But he confuses opinion with fact. Dr. Rooney wrote a comment about chiropractic that simply isn't true--that is--the horse's vertebrae don't move and can't move with spinal manipulation. Dr. Rooney points to his "post-mortem" proof and defies the reader to move a dead horse's vertebrae even in the absence of muscle spasm. Well, what about rigormortus? True, a dead horse's spine cannot be moved, but a live one could--same holds true with a person. So, Dr. Rooney, stick to horse lameness. You're good at that. But leave your opinions about chiropractic at the gate--or at least do your homework. Unqualified statements made in a book puts a cloud on the stuff that is qualified.
Customer Reviews:
Obsolete? Not unless horse anatomy becomes obsolete. .......2006-05-19
This book is so good that it will survive the test of time no matter what. Reading and understanding it gives the reader the ability to judge correctly how to superbly care for horses. I'm very glad that Dr. Rooney has updated it, but I sure wouldn't be throwing out the old versions yet! I've worked with horses for 46 years, and I always have a copy of Rooney handy, plus a loaner copy for others.
A priceless book for anyone involved in the care of horses.
Obsolete.......2006-02-01
This first edition is long, long out-of-date, and it is high time Amazon woke up and stopped misleading the public by offering remaindered books without so identifying them.

This is the be-all and end-all of mushroom books! Truly an encyclopedia of mushroom facts and lore, lavishly illustrated with full-color photographs, literally everything you need to know about mushrooms, edible or not. Arora has taught mycology for close to twenty years and has hunted and photographed mushrooms across the North American continent. Threaded through the book are his wry and humorous observations and comments, making what could have been a rather dull, "just-the-facts, ma'am" reference book into a really enjoyable read. The stunning photographs of the incredible variety of fungi are fascinating and eye-opening, and while the author gives clear and factual information, the mysterious allure of mushrooms in their countless shapes, sizes and colors is only increased by this huge and delightful book. --Mark Hetts
Book Description
Nothing is more elusive and mysterious than the wild mushroom. David Arora celebrates the gathering and study of wild mushrooms with engaging style, wit and simple terminology. Mushrooms Demystified includes descriptions, photographs, and keys to over 2,000 species. There is a Beginner's Checklist of the 70 most distinctive and common mushrooms plus detailed chapters on terminology, classification, habitats, mushroom cookery, mushroom toxins, and the meanings of scientific mushroom names.

Mushrooms Demystified: A Comprehensive Guide to the Fleshy Fungi .......2007-09-19
My son loves this book and has used it several times already. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in studying mushrooms.
Mushrooms Demystified: A Comprehensive Guide to the Fleshy Fungi.......2007-01-19
Hands down, the best mushroom field guide available. Great pictures and excellent keys. Makes it easy to know what you're dealing with when you find a mushroom.
Great Companion Book.......2007-01-05
This hard to find book is great. Arora did a great job. The keys very good, are easy to use and the descriptions of each mushroom identified in the book are comprehensive and even entertaining. (A dicot' key can be a truly horrid thing.) The illustrations for key features also very helpful. Even for casual reading it is entertaining! The Fifth Kingdom is a great addition to this book for addl info about life cycles.
MUSHROOMS DEMYSTIFIED.......2007-01-03
A VERY GOOD REFERENCE, BUT ALMOST TOO MUCH INFO TO PROCESS FOR THE BEGINNER.
why do i need to write a title?.......2006-11-05
THE comprehensive guide to mushrooms. I own several that I like, and this is probably the best of them. It's large size makes it unsuitable for a field guide, but it's a great resource. Just get "All that the rain promises...," or the Audubon book for a field guide.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect........2000-04-04
Okay, maybe not entirely perfect. It's probably a littl more perfect if you're west of the rockies. Nevertheless, this is without a doubt the best comprehensive book of mushroom collection and identification ever written. The keys are clear, detailed, and concise; the descriptions are excellent; the author is very knowledgeable and provides extensive information about edibility and toxicity rather than making blanket statements insulting to the reader. Microscopic characteristics are de-emphasized for ease of field use, but are still treated well; photography is excellent but not heavily emphasized, leaving most of the page space to the fantastic keys. You must own this book.

Book Description
French Popular Lithographic Imagery, 1815-1870 will reproduce in twelve volumes approximately 5000 nineteenth-century lithographs from the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale.
In Volume 11: Pinups and Erotica, Beatrice Farwell has collected more than three hundred lithographs showing women as passive, erotic objects. Inexpensive and ephemeral, these sujets gracieux decorated the walls of brothels and were sold to a large bachelor market free from the strictures of family values. While numerous fantasies from this genre have been enshrined in modernist painting, Professor Farwell's effort to catalog everyday representations demonstrates the large degree to which these powerful images circulated in popular culture.
