Book Description
Judge Dee presided over his imperial Chinese court with a unique brand of Confucian justice. A near mythic figure in China, he distinguished himself as a tribunal magistrate, inquisitor, and public avenger. Long after his death, accounts of his exploits were celebrated in Chinese folklore, and later immortalized by Robert van Gulik in his electrifying mysteries.
In The Phantom of the Temple, three separate puzzles—the disappearance of a wealthy merchant's daughter, twenty missing bars of gold, and a decapitated corpse—are pieced together by the clever judge to solve three murders and one complex, gruesome plot.
“Judge Dee belongs in that select group of fictional detectives headed by the renowned Sherlock Holmes. I assure you it is a compliment not given frivolously.”—Robert Kirsch, Los Angeles Times
Robert Van Gulik (1910-67) was a Dutch diplomat and an authority on Chinese history and culture. He drew his plots from the whole body of Chinese literature, especially from the popular detective novels that first appeared in the seventeenth century.

Multiple Murders - And A Bear.......2000-06-06
A storm forces Judge Dee to stay overnight in a Taoist temple. There he finds he must investigate the poisoning of one religious young woman, the disappearance of two other women, a possible ghost, a possibly murdered abbot, and numerous suspicious living men and women. All his questions are answered, but administering justice strains his moral code.

Product Description
An eerie tale, combining investigation, horror and surprise, Robert van Gulik's latest Chinese detective story is set in a remote western border province of the mighty Tang empire. There, in the district of Lan-fang, separated from the vast Tartar steppes of Central Asia by only a boundary river, Judge Dee faced and solved one of the most frightening cases of his long career.
Outside the east city gate, on a wooded hill, stood a centuries-old Buddhist temple. It was there that the phantom stalked; and there also a series of brutal murders were committed. Judge Dee's inquiry into them was complicated by a mysterious dying message from a young girl named Jade, and by the theft of a large sum in gold from an imperial treasurer. The period of investigation began auspiciously enough, with the birthday feast of the judge's First Lady. But, although his three wives played a part in his work on these cases, the scene of action soon moved abruptly from the serene seclusion of his women's quarters to the raw misery of the poorer districts of the town.
As the tale develops, promising clues in the investigation come to nothing, while insignificant details assume great importance. Strange rites and terrifying confrontations are set against the authentic background of seventh-century China which Dr. van Gulik knows so well. The contrast throws into stark relief the grotesque horrors guarded by The Phantom of the Temple.
Customer Reviews:
You won't want to put this book down!.......2007-05-09
The main character is a young girl, forced to step away from her family because she can not conform to what is expected of a young woman. She has an amazing ability to communicate with hawks and horses, called "laren", and begins a quest to find others like her. She also searching for a brother, who also could not conform to their father's wishes. In the beginning of her journey, she disguises herself as a man, but still trouble finds her along the way. This is a very believable character, and reading it as a young woman, I can't help but relate to the pressures that come as you get older. If you like horses, this is also a book for you. I also highly recommend "The Wolf Experiments" by Carey Borgens. Both of these book depict a strong female character, a journey of discovery. While Hawkmistress is more of a medieval fantasy, The Wolf Experiments is a Science Fiction. These titles are well written and keep you on the edge of your seat.
back jacet summary.......2006-03-04
from the back cover of the 7th printing September 1982 Daw paperback edition
cover illustration by Hannah M. G. Shapero
She had rejected her noble birthright and embraced the freedom only a man could claim. She was Romilly who lived among the beasts of hill and forest and communicated with them, who tried humanity and turned it down for its evils and jealousies. She had the MacAran Gift, the rare laran that conferred mastery over hawk and horse.
There was war in the lands of Darkover for this was the age of chaos when usurpers took the throne and the true king wandered in disguise with a price on his head. Romilly wanted none of all this, but there were those who shared her talents-the men and women of the Towers. And for them Romilly was the key.
Whether male-garbed or beast-minded, she was also human. And duty to her own true kind pointed her to the ultimate decision.
Very Good Darkover Book.......2005-04-09
As Romilly MacAran approaches the age of 15, she runs into two problems: her father and her laran. She decides to run away from her father and finds herself in the middle of a war. She grows from girl to young woman in a very interesting joutney and ends up with love, honor and respect. Although there is a very feminist slant to this book, it doesn't interfere with the story. I would definitely recommend it to both fans of the Darkover series and young women who can sympathize with the character's trials.
A Perpetual Favorite.......2004-07-20
Romilly MacAran is hitting puberty. Not only does that mean the usual mood swings and hormone surges, but also the surges of Romilly's awakening laran. Romilly has the MacAran gift of rapport with animals in full measure. Her overbearing father, Dom Mikhail, loves her as his favorite, but will not bend in his views of what is right in their society; that women should stay at home and embroider while men work with hawks and hounds. Mikhail also does not believe in tower training to control laran, and Romilly's beloved older brother, Ruyven, also strongly gifted with laran, fled home to take a place as laranzu in Tramontana tower against his father's wishes.
Romilly is unhappy under her father's autocratic rule, (as is her other older brother who is ironically berated for not having the family laran) but is hopeful until her father gives away her prized hawk and pledges her hand in marriage to a fat, greasy, older lord who has already lost multiple wives in childbirth. Romilly cuts her hair, puts on boy's clothes, and takes to the forest. She has many adventures and gets embroiled in the battle to restore the rightful Hastur King to the throne of Darkover, a battle in which she unsurprisingly plays a major part.
Romilly is very like Menolly from Anne McCaffrey's DRAGONSONG books. She is very sensitive and talented, subjected to emotional abuse (and a little physical abuse by her family-especially her father) and she suffers from low self-esteem. Her feelings of injustice are keenly felt and heart-rending. She grows and matures as she comes into her talent and is instrumental in helping a respected surrogate father figure. I first read this book as a teen, and found the angst and righteous indignation of Romilly tore at my heart. It still does. Would highly recommend this, especially to teen girls.
another excellent Darkover novel.......2003-10-04
This book is set in one of the earlier time periods of Darkover: The Ages of Chaos. The heroine of this novel is a girl named Romilly. Romilly MacAran is the daughter of an important family. She has her family's gift of laran: the ability to intuitively feel what animals are feeling, thus making it easier to work with them. In particular, this laran is used with hawks and horses (her family is known for the MacAran gift with hawks). Because of the strained family dynamic, more pressure is put in Romilly than otherwise might have been. The eldest son left home to train his laran in a Tower, and this enraged Mikhail MacAran (so much so that mention of laran or the eldest son's name was forbidden). The heir was a disappointment to Mikhail and he wished that Romilly was a man. Mikhail tried to push Romilly into a marriage with someone that she found disgusting and unacceptable. Instead of accepting the marriage, she ran away from home.
Romilly disguises herself as a man. This era of Darkover is extremely patriarchal and women have few rights in society. Romilly meets up with Dom Carlo and his exile band who are joining the army of the exiled King Carolin. Though her travels she is learning who she is and who she wants to be. Romilly also gets to experience some of the prejudice Darkover society presents women. For a brief while, she also joins the Sisterhood of the Sword, a female/warrior society. Even while we learn about Romilly we also see more of Darkover and what the society is like.
This is a feminist novel in the characterization of Romilly and how she reacts to the men (and world) of Darkover. It is also a very good novel. It goes in a different direction from Stormqueen (another novel set in the Ages of Chaos), but is just as rich and just as good. Darkover is one of the better fanstay worlds and Marion Zimmer Bradley is an excellent writer. Most, if not all, of the Darkover novels are self-contained, so it is not necessary to read them in any particular order. Just pick one up and give it a try. I haven't been disappointed by this series yet.

A wonderful introduction into the world of MZB's Darkover.......1998-07-10
When I was about 12 or 13 years old, I got a book from my grandmother that changed my life, a wonderful story about a young girl that grows up in a medieval kind of world where women are basically owned by men, where adventure and danger seem to be lurking at all times and communication with animals is like a magical encounter with another creature's mind. An incredible story that you can't put down and then makes you thirst for more and will turn you into a hopeless Darkoveraholic! That's "Hawkmistress"!
An excellent introduction to the Darkover Series!.......1998-02-08
This was the first book I read by Marion Zimmer Bradley, and I am now a BIG fan as a result. Strong female character, a diverse world population, interesting character relationships. If you haven't read it, you should. If you have, it's time for a re-read!

Book Description
Take the natural path to mental wellness
More than 25 million Americans are treated with antidepressants each year, at a cost in excess of $50 billion. But the side effects of popular prescription drugs may seem nearly as depressing as the symptoms they’re meant to treat. Veteran yoga instructor Amy Weintraub offers a better solution—one that taps the scientifically proven link between yoga and emotional well-being as well as the beauty of ancient approaches to inner peace.
Addressing a range of diagnoses, including dysthymia, anxiety-based depression, and bipolar disorder, Yoga for Depression reveals why specific postures, breathing practices, and meditation techniques can ease suffering and release life’s traumas and losses. Weintraub also reflects on her own experience with severe depression, from which she recovered through immersing herself in a daily yoga routine.
Yoga for Depression is the first yoga book devoted exclusively to the treatment of these debilitating conditions. Amy Weintraub will help readers see their suffering and themselves in a vibrant new light.
Customer Reviews:
Yoga for Depression review.......2007-03-16
A well-researched, well-written book which has inspired me to commit to daily yoga. Amy Weintraub illustrates convincingly the benefits yoga can bring to a depressed person, without condemning conventional medicine. Instead she recommends a mixture of yoga, medication and talk therapy to suit each individual. This book is inspiring and gives me hope.
the power to change comes from ones self - not in the heavens.......2007-03-08
I expected a more pure yoga approach to this most serious subject; depression. Some depression is caused by physical problems therefore I expected more YOGA positions; healing the body thus setting the stage to clear the mind. Finding the answers to problems of the mind is difficult enough without diverting the process in non reality based solutions.
Extremely Helpful and Well Written.......2007-01-14
As a long-time sufferer of depression and anxiety who has spent years on medication as well as counseling, this book provides a great deal of information on the healing nature of yoga and meditation. Ms. Weintraub certainly seems to understand the dark days firsthand and she offers positive advice on how a yoga practice can help quiet the mind as well as energize the body.
I did buy the book expecting it to have a full yoga program in it. But that is not the purpose of the book. It does have many yoga practices and they have been helpful but her intent is to explain the connection between our bodies and emotions and how yoga can help. She recommends taking a yoga class or using a book to truly learn yoga properly. She provides a fantastic list of resources at the end of the book for yoga websites, retreats, books, and cds.
I highly recommend this book and I am enjoying my new yoga adventure.
Yoga for Depression.......2006-11-05
Interesting read in its attempt to tie contemporarily known facts about the etiology and treatment of depression to this time-honored and ancient practice. A worthwhile read for those who either want to try yoga under the tutelage of a certified teacher and as part of professionally supervised treatment as a means of improving and sustaining mood or adding it to more traditional treatment. Clearly, we have much more to learn about how yoga effects mood and the relationship of movement, breath, spirituality and self-discovery to depression.
Gives Hope for New Practitioners.......2006-07-06
This book is fantastic! It gave me hope and inspiration to know that I could potentially beat my depression without being on medication for ever. Amy talks about a lot of different practices that are said to help with depression. I was a little dissapointed that some of them were not more fully explained, but this is a great starting point! With the knowledge I learned from this book, now I know what to research further and what questions to ask my yoga teacher. The references in the back of the book are also very helpful. I'm so greatful that I stumbled upon this book!

In Shakespeare's comedy Twelfth Night, the Duke Orsino opines that music is the food of love, but he was wrong--food is. Indeed, passion and the palate are inextricably linked, and lovers through the ages have known that the stomach is the surest way to the hearts of their beloved. A Taste for Love subscribes to that well-known aphorism, but authors Elizabeth M. Harbison and Mary McGowan leave nothing to chance; in addition to mouth-watering meals, they've included everything from snippets of romantic poetry to decorating advice and what music to play in order to get you and your loved one "in the mood."
The book is divided into eight sections: "Breakfast in Bed" gets the day off to a good start, and "By the Fire" is guaranteed to turn the heat up. "Table for Two" offers romantic restaurant-style dinners, while "Perfect Picnics" cooks up portable meals for romance on the go. "Light Love" is for calorie-conscious lovers, "From the Garden" gets vegetarians in the mood, and "Songs of the Sea" offers love on the half-shell. Finally, you'll always have Paris with "Bar and Grill," a collection of bistro-style meals that will make you feel like Bogie and Bergman. With such dishes as Herb-Roasted Tomatoes with Romano Cheese, Soup de Provence avec Pistou, and Chocolate Kahlua Soufflé, what's not to love?
Book Description
In the spirit of romance, A Taste for Love presents an imaginative selection of menus—plus romantic verse, decorating ideas and music selections—designed specifically to stir a lover's passion. Create the ultimate in intimate dining experiences with such tantalizing treats as:

Great little cookbook.......1999-04-09
I just love this little book. I have many, many cookbooks to choose from and I've gone back to this one for several dishes already in the last two months since I've purchased. Although, I have not yet made a full menu as it recommends, taking pieces here and there has been just as wonderful. The dishes are gourmet in their presentation and ingredients, but not complicated to prepare. Perfect when cooking just for two on a nice quiet weekend.
Delightful book for the heart and taste buds........1998-08-16
A Taste For Love is a wonderful book with recipes to delight the taste buds, poetry to move a lover's soul, and helpful suggestions to put you in the mood for romance. And, you don't have to be a hopeless romantic to use it. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to put out an impressive meal.
Delicious!.......1998-03-06
I was widowed last year, so I picked up this book for the small portions and not the romance. I was pleasantly surprised at the thoroughness in the range of recipes. You can find just about anything you want here. I recommend this book to anyone who cooks for one or two. Helen Dargi

a very good book.......2006-11-10
This is a very good book. Some authors fill their books with jargons and make the books difficut to read. But Soucek writes in plain language. She makes professional knowledge of parrot breeding understandable to a parrot lover like me. Photos are clear and illustrative. I considered this book is the best one among books of similar topics.
Hobby breeding just made easier.......2005-08-02
Well being a hobby breeder I must say that I had learned somewhat through the years. I walked into a book store and took my husband's advice for once, it turned out to be most rewarding. The Parrot Breeder's Answer Book is filled with so much information which answered alot of my questions concerning my current breeding. Most of all the book is fun to read and the amount of pictuers add alot as well, far from boring like other related books. I must say taking my husbands advise did work out this time since it never ends up good. I would recommend this book to my fellow bird breeder's especially my mother in law she can really use this book as a Christmas Gift.

The Parrot Breeder's Answer Book.......2005-07-28
Very informative, I've been a breeder for 11 years and learned a few things I didn't know!
You will never leave home again...almost.......2005-07-10
THE PARROT BREEDER'S ANSWER BOOK was written by Gayle Soucek, who has been breeding and training parrots for a number of years and maintains a flock of 70-80 birds at her Chicago home. The fact that she has been able to raise baby parrots in such a cold hostile environment is amazing, especially when she informs the reader that at times she must transport the babies to work because they require "round-the-clock"feedings, just like human babies. Of course she is hand raising the birds she feeds herself. Parent raised babies are cared for all day by mom and dad, but hand raising birds is the key to training them to be friendly animal companions. Reading this book one wonders where Ms Soucek finds the time to care for birds as she works full time for a bird supply business, is involved with a number of bird organizations and writes articles and books. Soucek says "you will never travel again" if you get into this business, and she has a point, although she undoubtedly travels to various locations to speak and lecture.
Soucek covers all the important aspects of baby-bird raising including parent nutrition and avian reproduction; preventive health care, including when to call your vet and when to "do it yourself"; baby nutrition including diets and hand feeding; housing, including cage requirements (do you know the difference between an incubator and a brooder?), air, water and light requirements; characteristics of birds reproductive systems including the difference between DNA sexing and the more invasive laproscopic sexing.
As a full-fledged bird breeder, I found this book highly informative, and recommend it to anyone who thinks bird-breeding is a "hobby."
The Perfect Parrot Breeding Guide.......2002-02-17
This is an excellent book for those who are looking into breeding parrots. It gives good information on the pros and cons for breeding, and comes with excellent pictures and illustrations. This is such a wonderful guide to breeding parrots RESPONSIBLY. It is incredibly honest and straight forward on the benefits and pitfalls of breeding. Very easy reading and informative. Also comes with a reference guide in the back. Highly recommended.

Disappointed.......2001-09-21
I was a bit diappointed with the Cherished Teddies Collector Value Guide. The values are over-estimated, compared to E-bay and other secondary markets. There is not much in the way of information. All the Cherished Teddies are not in there. Basically just a lot of pictures, with release dates and price list. Contains sections for keeping records, and information about insurance. Nice to look at for wish list. A "fast food" approach to collecting. I would like to see more about the artwork, history, and what makes some Cherished Teddies more valuable.
Very Handy.......2001-03-28
This book is handy for organizing your collection, and a MUST for any collector! It was essential in determining how much insurance coverage we should add when we married. Also, I have found it to be extremely handy for spotting Rare Bears and retired pieces, and the book has been a useful tool in online auctions.
cherished teddies.......2000-10-26
this book was not as informative as i thought it may be. I have an older book by a different author, and it gives a higher value and any rarities or varations that a teddie may have.. It's an OK book but i would have liked more info..
CHerished Teddies 2000 Collector's Value Guide.......2000-07-12
The book was complete and compact. It seemed to have the most up to date information related to if a piece is retried, ect. I also enjoyed being able to write in my collections value and which pieces I have in my collection. I find this book to be helpful in biding for auctions ect.
Big Help.......2000-03-28
This book was a big help when I tried to see how much my collection is worth. Some of it was a little hard to follow though. Some teddies look like their in hte wrong place and some of the picturs are small and fuzzy.

The best bonsai book out there! .......2007-06-08
When I received a bonsai tree for mother's day, I was determined not to kill it like I had done with a previous bonsai. After researching 7 or 8 books at the library, and several more at local book stores, this one stood out as positively the best one out there. It offers full-color pictures of over 100 different species plus growing, watering, pruning, propagation, and other tips for each kind of tree. There are step-by-step instructions for growing bonsai from seeds, cuttings, and several other techniques such as grafting are included. This has been the most helpful book out there, and my trees, including several I bought, pruned, and potted myself, are flourishing! This is a wonderful book for any bonsai lover, or even just as a beautiful centerpiece for your library. Happy gardening!
Great great book.......2007-06-03
This book is really nice the presentation is awesome it looks like a collection book it has a hardcover protector and the information is very usefull nice pics and good tips for begginers and medium masters it`s a must have book i recomend it 100%
Excellent.......2007-05-30
A great way to see many different examples of well done bonsai. Excellent inspiration for beginners.
The ALMOST Complete Book of Bonsai.......2007-04-27
I'm new to the bonsai world, and had read some material online for a quick introduction. Now I was ready for more details, which is why I ordered this book.
It is an excellent book, with step-by-step descriptions and accompanying pictures, which are large and high-resolution. The book is great for education as well as inspiration. It covers everything from the history, to starting your own bonsai from scratch, to maintaining it. It also has an extensive compendium of trees and shrubs.
The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars was that there were a couple of (what I thought were basic) things I was looking for that didn't appear in the book, i.e. information I came across online that I was hoping to get more detailed information and pictures on. I would give it a 4.5 if I could, because it's still a great book.
TIP: If you buy this book, don't buy Bonsai (101 Essential Tips). I bought both, and was disappointed to see they are the same book, only Bonsai (101 Essential Tips)
is an abridged version of this book. They are published in the US by Abbeville Press and in London by DK.

Book Description
"With compassion for both genders--and a lot of common sense--Audrey Chapman leads the discussion on how black men and women can move from destructive relationships to healthy loving."
--Bebe Moore Campbell
Bestselling author of Brothers and Sisters
"Offers healing prescriptions to help us work through our complex problems and move toward healthier relationships."
--Nathan McCall
Author of Makes Me Want to Holler
While many black men and women enjoy good loving, countless others are trapped in a cycle of bitter emotions and disappointments. As couples therapist Audrey Chapman traveled across the country conducting seminars and workshops on male-female relationships, she was struck by the deep yearning of individuals struggling, often in silence, to find "good loving."
In Getting Good Loving, Chapman examines the psychosocial dynamics in black relationships and explains why unrealistic expectations and confusion about masculine and feminine roles are the two main reasons why black men and women continue to misunderstand one another. Chapman addresses what she calls the "entitlement syndrome"--a subconscious belief that one's romantic partner should make up for one's past suffering. Through case studies and intimate revelations from both men and women, Chapman explains how these root problems surface and how they can be transformed to create healthy, loving, and interdependent relationships.
Here is an honest and sensitive exploration of how to take responsibility for our own happiness and get what we all need--good loving.
"Chapman explores the root causes of common problems between black men and women without using that knowledge as an excuse for destructive behavior. Getting Good Loving offers a positive approach to strengthen and encourage black couples rather than laying blame. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to better understand relationships between black men and women."
--Alvin Poussaint, M.D.
"With sensitivity and wit, [Chapman] suggests ways black men and women can shed their defenses and learn to trust each other again."
--Publishers Weekly

LONG, LONG, LONG OVERDUE!!! BROTHERS AND SISTERS REJOICE!!!.......1999-06-09
Audrey B. Chapman goes where most other authors cannot--into the Black experience--and comes out with advice tailor-made to our experience and culture. Where other books would stress cute lingerie or "communication", this book goes into the heart of where relationships in the Black community go wrong...from the cradle. She takes the time to explore the issues from the Black female/Black male point of view, and offers gentle, compassionate advice that uplifts all and insults none. If you have given up on Black men/Black women and feel as if you have to go it alone or "cross over" to find a good relationship, then this book is for you. It can also help you to repair a worsening relationship by helping to confront the real issues surrounding it. This is easily worth 10 times more than what you may pay for it, and should be THE definitive book for Blacks trying to have a decent, honest, loving union. For yourself, your lover and for the next generation, BUY IT, READ IT AND TREASURE IT!!! You won't be sorry!!!

Book Description
Part intellectual history, part advice book, and part polemic, this collection of original essays and poetry presents a defense and celebration of the achievements--moral, material, intellectual, and artistic--of black women in Victorian America. Writing as a Christian, a mother, and a wife, Mrs. Mossell held exemplary models of black womanhood before the public eye, called for the end to caste and color discrimination, and challenged the so-called "cult of true womanhood." A source of instruction and inspiration in its own time, The Work of the Afro-American Woman today remains a valuable document of black American cultural and intellectual history and forges a powerful link between past and present.
