Book Description
When a sacret woman's rite in the ancient city of Rome is infiltrated by a corrupt patrician dressed in female garb, it falls to Senator Decuis Caecilius Metellus the Younger, whose investigative skills have proven indispensable in the past, to unmask the perpetrators. When four brutal slayings follow, Decius enlists the help a notorious and dangerous criminal. Together, they establish a connection between the sacrilege and the murders, and track the offenders from the lowest dregs of society to the prominent elite of the upper class, finding corruption and violence where Decius least expects it.

Number Three in a Terrific Series.......2007-02-23
John Maddox Roberts is the pseudonym of Mark Ramsay, author of numerous works of science fiction and fantasy, in addition to his successful historical SPQR mystery series. He lives in New Mexico with his wife.
There are more secret societies and strange rites than you can shake a stick at in the Ancient city of Rome, most of them admittedly for the male section of the population, but as in any other period of history the female of the species hates to be left out and so they have their own secret rites and woe betide any man seen taking an interest in these events.
Naturally when one of the women's sacred meeting is infiltrated by a corrupt patrician dressed in female attire, Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger is brought in to unmask the suspects. When four brutal killings occur it becomes obvious that the infiltrators are not just peeping toms and Decius enlists the help of a notorious criminal.
Between them the pair establish a link between the infiltration of the women's sacred rites and the murders and this leads Decius from the long rung of the ladder of society up to the heights of the upper class, finding violence and corruption along the way . . .
The Sacrilege (SPQR III).......2007-01-12
In this third detective adventure of Decius, a little-known scion of the famous Caecilii Metelli, we again see many of our favorite characters including the devious Clodia, the clever Greek physician Asklepiodes, and Decius's irrascible father. This is a very interesting retelling and interpretion of the historical scandal of the sacrilege of the Festival of the Bona Dea by Publius Clodius Pulcher who entered the house of the Pontifex Maximus dressed as a woman. We also meet Hermes, Decius's wily slave boy who will continue to be his Watson as the series continues. Less didactic than the first two books, and very entertaining.
Caesar's Spouse and a Suspicious Sacrilege.......2004-07-31
When I was a young assistant state attorney, a wise old lawyer told me that a prosecutor had to be like Caesar's wife--above suspicion. Good advice, but where did the aphorism come from? "SPQR III" gives a humorous answer to that question, and also gives us a rolicking good story of love, murder, and political intrigue.
One engaging aspect of the SPQR series is the ensemble of remarkable characters who reappear book after book. Quintus Caecilius Metellus the Elder, a battle scarred, no-nonsense soldier and politician who is both proud of and embarrassed by his eccentric son. Metellus Creticus, a dour man who happens to be one of the most powerful soldier-politicians in Rome. Titus Milo, a handsome, muscular organized crime boss who doesn't need weapons to defend himself. Asclepiodes, a talented physician who specializes in stitching up gladiators and performing autopsies. Fausta and Clodia, two women who are as heartless as they are beautiful. Publius Clodius, a reprobate who has only two ambitions--to become the most powerful man in Rome and to kill Decius Metellus the Younger.
In this book Roberts makes two exemplary additions to the ensemble: Julia, niece of Julius Caesar, love of Decius' life, and no mean detective in her own right. And finally, Hermes, a lazy, hungry, insolent slave whose cupidity sometimes interferes with his loyalty to Decius his master.
"SPQR III" follows the same plot as the first two offerings in this series. Decius investigates a sacrilege, becomes embroiled in a series of murders, uncovers a plot which threatens the very existence of Rome, dodges repeated attempts on his life as he pulls off a caper which saves the Republic, and flees Rome pursued by assassins. The mystery is not so much "whodunnit" as "how's Decius going to keep from getting himself killed?" It's all good fun.
Good, but one major inaccuracy.......2002-07-27
Good plot, as usual, except Caesar did not have a wife named Pompeia.
Best so far.......2002-05-09
This one is the best so far of the series. Apart from the author's familarity with his main character, Decius, the supporting ensemble are all finely meshed and their personalities are comfortable to the reader. The continuing feud between Clodius and Decius makes for fine entertainment. The introduction of the slave Hermes is with a mildly irritating character, but, given he is in the fourth installment it is interesting to see how he will develop. JMR gives us a more stable influence on Decius' live with the daughter of Lucius Julius Caesar 'joining' forces but being tee-d up to be Decius' betrothal.
The plot centers around Clodius' infamous disruption of the Bona Dea rites in 62BC, and this time knowledge of the period doesn't impact on figuring out the murders. In all actuality, the murders are irrelevant and JMR hardly bothers to clear them up, Decius just mentally confirming his own theory as the facts. It spirals off into an interesting and, perhaps, not unbelievable, early view on the coming triumvirate. All the time JMR is quick to downplay and perhaps poke fun at the staid glorification of ancient Roman legends such as Caesar. For example Decius' hilarity at Caesar's famous remark about his wife Pompeia's non-complicity. It tends to humanise these historical figures.
JMR's novels are 'published' as Roman murder mysteries but they are so much more than that. A satirical look at a fascinating period of history (much echoed by Steven Saylor), his astute (and, in this installment, being given license for hubris) hero bounces through ancient Rome in a delightfully irreverent manner in his quest to know the facts about murders and the general shadowy political dealings of Republican Rome.

Wolfe's least tricky work, a highly entertaining mystery.......2002-03-24
PANDORA, BY HOLLY HOLLANDER is perhaps Gene Wolfe's most mainstream novel. A murder mystery set in a small town in Illinois, the novel contains little of the fantastic elements of his other works, such as his acclaimed masterwork The Book of the New Sun. The book also lacks the puzzles for which Wolfe is notorious, so that the reader gets pretty much everything on the first time through.
The narrator of PANDORA is Holly Hollander, a 17-year old girl who, though plainly immature, is no ditz. She has a thing for mystery novels and can think quite logically. The plot of PANDORA is that Holly's mother buys an locked box marked "Pandora" to be the star attraction of the annual town fair. Tickets are sold, and whoever wins the raffle gets whatever is in the box. I can't say too much to spoil the plot, but the box unleashes death and Holly is determined to find the culprit. She meets a criminologist, Alladin Blue, who seems to know more than he should about the people of her small town.
PANDORA was the third of Gene Wolfe's turn-of-the-90's trilogy of books with contemporary settings. It is perhaps the least substantial, both THERE ARE DOORS and CASTLEVIEW better reward repeat reading with their numerous riddles. Nonetheless, PANDORA is entertaining, and I'd recommend it to any fan of Gene Wolfe. Nonetheless, for people who haven't read anything by Wolfe, I'd suggest starting with the Book of the New Sun, his acclaimed four-volume work.
An intriguing mystery written two-fold.......1998-07-15
This is a great mystery, with odd twists and thrilling turns, told with a refrshingly new voice about a very unseemly murder. Although not overtly at first (ignoring the title), it uses every bit as much symbolism and allusions and references and all that kind of literary stuff that make you wonder--as people who read Gene Wolfe's work already know about--what you're gong to catch the next time you read it. Arthur'd be proud.

With more than 650,000 copies sold, massage therapist Lucinda Lidell's Book of Massage has been updated with new photos and instructional drawings. Not for the prudish, as the subjects in most of the photos are completely in the buff, the book presents an intense, information-packed, step-by-step guide to traditional massage, shiatsu, and reflexology.
No matter which method you choose to focus on (you're advised to choose one at a time), Lidell is thorough in her explanations of the strokes and techniques necessary to give relaxing, therapeutic massage in the privacy of your own home. Detailed drawings, diagrams, and photographs help to further demonstrate how to address each individual body part.
Divided into distinct chapters for each of the three methods, The Book of Massage also includes several sections that Lidell stresses are fundamental to all types of massage. The first is "Beginning," with information such as creating the right atmosphere (a warm room and soft lighting), applying oil, and finding a comfortable position. Additionally, Lidell suggests that everyone should review sections on the human touch and anatomy, both of which oddly come at the end of the book.
As thorough as The Book of Massage may be, do not expect to walk away from it an expert. As with any skill worth learning, giving good massage takes time, study, and practice, practice, practice. --Bree Altman

The Book of Massage.......2007-09-30
The book is informative with fine pictures giving every aspect of the description. The books gives the idea of the 'healing science', even to the layman for whom, massage is a new subject.

excellent knowledge of both western and eastern techniques.......2007-06-15
It is great knowledge of massage techniques for learner and trained MTs.
Pictures are very good and the matter has been dealt with expertly.
I enjoyed reading and learning new techniques of massage therapy.
The only thing I found different is nude client on table, which differs from draping rules defined by AMTA/National Board USA (That is draping of client as per applicable laws of MD/DC/VA) .
How to Massage.......2007-05-13
This book is intended for use between partners and close friends. It covers traditional Swedish Massage, Shiatsu, and reflexology. If you want detailed massage sequences on how precisely to give a massage to a close friend this book will do it. The photographs are excellent as are the drawings.
Good Book.......2005-09-14
I have read through most of this book. It gives good information about massage and how to apply it. The more you practice, the better you get.
Excellent resource for the beginner.......2004-08-13
I wanted a basic book of massage techniques, this is it. I also bought another book with photos that I don't find nearly as good. This one has drawings with helpful diagrams as to direction etc. This book also covers the basics of shiatsu and reflexology but by far the most extensive section is on massage. I learned a lot just from scanning the text and studying the diagrams/drawings. This is a great book and worth the money.

Customer Reviews:
Well worth owning.......2007-07-13
This a no-nonsense approach to reducing your sodium intake, even suggesting brands that offer low and no sodium products. After having a high blood pressure reading recently, I started looking for ways to reduce my sodium intake. This book was much better than others I looked at. The recipes are easy to follow and the food that you make with them is very good. What more do you want?
Great way to make changes in your eating habits.......2006-12-30
I bought this book because someone close to me needed to get his sodium down immediately. I've made several recipes from the book: turkey chilli, chicken tagine, coq au vin, chicken paprika, and several appetizers and desserts. Generally, the recipes are quite good-- guests at your table will not be able to tell the difference. I haven't had as much luck with the desserts, but if you are looking for really good recipes that don't taste like wallpaper paste, this is the book. I really like the extensive appendices of information on how to locate low sodium products and adapt your own recipes. I definitely recommend this. I did have to buy quite a collection of spices and cooking wines to flavor food, but now that I have all that, most recipes are easy to put together. Warning: when she says spicy, she means it! She has a tongue of steel. I've learned to back off the cayenne and Tabasco in her recipes.
A cornucopia of quick and delicious dishes that will reduce salt intake while enhancing flavorful dining.......2006-03-08
Most Americans simply use to much salt in their foods. For some, excess sodium is putting their health into serious jeopardy. For anyone who must be "salt conscious" about what they eat or serve, The Hasty Gourmet Low Salt Favorites is a compendium of three hundred "kitchen cook friendly" recipes that will offer a cornucopia of quick and delicious dishes that will reduce salt intake while enhancing flavorful dining. In addition to savory dishes ranging from Curried Yam and Apple Bisque; Asparagus Turkey with Cream Sauce; and Onion Casserole; to Celery with Pimento-Walnut Cheese; Potato Crusted Breakfast Pizza; and Pecan Pie with Bourbon Creme, The Hasty Gourmet Low Salt Favorites also provides such useful advice regarding what to stock in the low-salt pantry, low-salt shopping tips (including which brands to by and which to avoid), limiting sodium without sacrificing flavor, and the fine culinary art of substituting ingredients when adapting favorite recipes.

Fascinated By Frogs........2003-04-10
Over the past several years, I have learned a lot about frogs. However, I have a lot more to learn. POISON DART FROGS has helped me in my quest for knowledge about frogs. The book is full of information and brilliantly penciled drawings. The book discusses such things as where the frogs poison comes from, how hunters gather the poison, how the frogs are born, and how they mate. A great book for any young person interested in nature or for anyone who loves frogs.

Book Description
Poison dart frogs are known by many for their bright colors and poisonous skins. This expert guide covers all of the common species as well as a number of rarer ones, and is the only up-to-date book available on keeping and breeding these amphibians that is written by professional breeders. It also covers important care topics to encourage health and happiness in your pet.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful little reference book........2001-06-06
This book is very concise at only 80 pages, but packed with useful information about keeping and breeding poison dart frogs. There is extensive information about setting up the terrarium, including appropriate and inappropriate plant selections, food sources and their breeding, and care and breeding of the frogs themselves. The more common species are covered in individual chapters, but minor species are omitted. The photography is exquisite and more than justifies the purchase price. I have read several similar references, but this clearly the most useful to the hobbyist.
Great book, for interested people........2000-10-10
this is a great book for you interested out there. It talks about everything on the surface, but there is alot more things in depth not mentioned. Like the frogs all cost from $45 to $300, a drop of poison from the skin can kill about 200 adults...and so on. It is a very expensive pet and not recommended for beginners. As a professional herp breeder i don't recommend this pet to just anyone but the BOOK IS GREAT for everyone.
Product Description
The authors share their knowledge of this fascinating hobby based on their many years as breeders of poison frogs. According to the authors, "having a tropical terrarium with orchids, ferns, bromeliads and reproducing poison frogs is one of the most statisfying hobbies one can have". 150 full-color photographs and drawings.

A Suriname Adventure.......2001-09-18
Four wildlife biologists step from a small plane and into a remote rainforest to begin the adventure of a lifetime. Their goal: to find, study, and hopefully save an elusive and tiny amphibian. They are searching for the blue poison-dart frog. Ron Fridell's book, The Search for Poison-Dart Frogs, written for the Wildlife Conservation Society, puts the reader on the rivers, the grassland trails, and the mountain slopes, as the biologists hike to the only place in the world where blue poison dart-frogs live-Suriname, South America. Along with native guides and translators, the U.S. researchers travel by dugout canoe and on foot, enduring high temperatures, intense humidity, and clouds of mosquitoes. Along the journey, the reader learns about scientific field study, poison-dart frogs, and the determination of conservationists to study these tiny members of the animal kingdom. Brillant color photographs capture life on the trail and the astonishing beauty of poison-dart frogs. The Search for Poison-Dart Frogs is a personal story, a scientific story, and a story that enlightens and inspires readers of all ages.

Book Description
This digital document is an article from Wilson Bulletin, published by Wilson Ornithological Society on September 1, 1999. The length of the article is 798 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
From the author: I observed a Rufous Motmot (Baryphthengus martii) feeding a black-and-green poison dart frog (Dendrobates auratus) to another motmot in the Caribbean Slope lowland rainforest of northeastern Costa Rica. Neither individual appeared to suffer any ill effects from what was probably courtship feeding. Small vertebrates are typical prey for the larger species of motmots. Blue-crowned Motmots (Momotus momota) have been observed consuming several species of poison dart frogs raised in captivity but captive reared frogs either do not contain, or have reduced levels of, the toxins that native frogs produce. Relatively little is known about the effects of poison dart frog toxins on predators. Presumably, the digestive system of the Rufous Motmot is capable of neutralizing the potentially toxic effects of such prey.

BOOK ORTHO GUIDE TO CREATING JAPANESE GARDENS BOOK BOOK
Customer Reviews:
Build Your Japanese Garden and spent your free time golfing.......2007-06-12
I bought serveral books about creating Japanese gardens. This book by far the best one that I had. I built a Japanese style Rock Garden so I don't have to mow my lawn. My back yard is built based on some of the pictures and tips I read from this book. The fun part is that you put in your hard work and built the garden you wanted which pays off when your guests give you thumb up. I spent about $5000 on the materials and hours of my own labor on the project. Now I can spent my weekend golfing instead of mowing my lawn. Ouch! My back still hurting from all the hardwork.
Good for beginners.......2007-04-04
The book is easy to read and explains the whole concept of Japanese gardening. I learned with it and will be using it to plan my Japanese garden. Very pleased customer!
For inspiration, start here.......2007-02-19
I've always wanted to have a Japanese Garden but never got around to doing it. I picked up this book at the library and, WOW, it has really inspired me! Not only am I now drafting up plans to turn a corner of my yard into a Japanese Garden but I showed it to a neighbor and he's thinking of making his backyard into something like the courtyard garden on page 20. I'll probably get a library of books on Japanese Gardening but this book will be the first one I'll buy.
Great intro.......2006-02-01
I got this book from the library and was pleasantly surprised at the details and useful, practical advice on conceiving and executing a japanese garden. The book contains detailed instructions on how to lay out, build, select plans for, and maintain a Japanese-inspired garden. It talks about rocks, rock gardening, ponds, water plants and fish, paths, stepping stones, gates, and plants and plant selections. I found it really helpful in getting ideas to give to our landscape architect. I would recommend this book for anyone that is going to actually build (rather than just enjoy looking at pictures of) a japanese garden.
amazingly beautifuls pictures.......2005-08-02
This book is one of the best I ever buy about gardening and landscaping. The pictures alone worth the price.
They gives details to build your garden, makes pounds and falls and it seems so easy that I am starting my own right now.
They also list the kind of trees and plants to uses.
Buy this book with confidence.
Book Description
Here, in his own words, is the first complete look at the career of Albert Hadley, legendary interior designer. A lavishly illustrated celebration of more than half a century of stunning interiors work, the book explores Hadley's personal and professional influences. It traces the path of a career that brought him into contact with all of the major figures in twentieth-century design: First as a student and then a professor at Parsons School of Design, where he became a close friend of Billy Baldwin and was by turn a student, friend, and colleague of Van Day Truex; to his working with Eleanor Brown at McMillen, Inc.; to his influential partnership, Parish Hadley, with the venerable Sister Parish; to his current work as the head of Albert Hadley, Inc. Exploring Hadley's design philosophy and process in great detail, the book covers the rooms that made design history, from the magnificent Rosedown Plantation to the Kennedy White House to Mrs. Vincent Astor's library. Enriched with dozens of new and archival images, as well as Hadley's acclaimed sketches and a catalogue raisonné listing every major article and book written about Hadley's work, Albert Hadley is the definitive, exclusive look at one of the most brilliant designers this country has ever seen.
Customer Reviews:
Great early written history;poor visual history especially concerning his later projects........2007-05-21
Great written history however the visual presentation of his work is poorly represented.
a must.......2007-01-09
If one is at all interested in interior design and decoration, then this book is a must have. Albert Hadley owns "style" and "good taste". The photos in this book are great and it is a very interesting read. He is such an interesting talent that anyone at all interested in design would love this book.
