Having Read 1 and 3, Had to Have 2.......2007-01-12
One may not always agree with Rumphole, or She Who Must Be Obeyed, but these compilations of short stories are great as a fun read on a recent period in English history and law that one can readily identify with if you don't lead an insular life (that grey area above the U.S. is Canada, and the grey are below it is Mexico on the TV weather maps).
Fun for Rumpole Fans!.......2007-01-09
We love the Rumpole books. My husband and I have read all the Omnibus books. We've never watched the series, so we have our own images of all the main characters: Rumpole, The Bull, "She Who Must Be Obeyed." Good stories...fun characters. Good threading of plot and characters through all the stories. Love it!
Rumpole.......2006-08-27
I certainly don't need to review "Rumpole of the Bailey." You know all about it. So, I'll just mention that he's especially good company when you fly. You can read a well-crafted story in what, 30 minutes? Ideal for airports and airplanes. Do this, sit for an hour, do that, sit for another hour, etc.
Reading for a summer afternoon--and week!.......2006-08-27
What a way to forget the outside world and enter the charming world of Horace Rumbole, barrister. I enjoy his droll humor and uncanny way of seeing things not on the surface to defend his client.
More of the Great Rumpole.......2006-08-03
Horace Rumpole presents himself as just an Old Bailey hack doing run-of-the-mill burglary defenses and the odd car-heist case. In reality he defends the best in the Anglo-American legal traditions against modern forces (for example, the presumption of innocence) - and this was written 20+ years ago!
Rumpole is the lovable defender of the average man and foe to all stick-in-the-muds. His motto "Never plead guilty." It could just as well be comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. Hilarious, warm, human, touching, self-effacing and ever-ready to pierce the pompous gasbag - that's Rumpole of the Bailey. Start with the First Rumpole Omnibus and work your way through the rest.
Guaranteed to tickle your funny bone and warm your heart.

Book Description
Aloysius Bertrand's ground-breaking collection of prose ballads was published in 1842, a year after his death at 34. Gaspard de la Nuit combines the haunting gothic imagery of Hoffman with the colorful romantic verve of Victor Hugo. In it, you will meet Scarbo the vampire dwarf, Ondine, the faerie princess of the waters, and an unforgettable assortment of lepers, alchemists, beggars, swordsmen and ghosts. Gaspard de la Nuit inspired Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Mallarmé, the Surrealist Movement and composer Maurice Ravel, who wrote a suite of virtuoso piano pieces patterned after it.

Excellent.......2007-09-20
The book's thorough introduction offers valuable insight into this pivotal author, Aloysius Bertrand, and his contribution to the evolution of modern poetry. The prose poems themselves are beautifully translated, steeped with haunting images of the middle ages--sublime, brutal, and devilish at a turn. One clearly sees how Gaspard de la Nuit influences the prose poems of Charles Baudelaire (published as Paris Spleen). Altogether, this is a beautiful and significant book.

An important edition.......2006-03-22
I am a collegiate piano student, and many established pianists have told me that this is the definative edition of Gaspard de la nuit. I purchased it, and was simply amazed by its quality. There are pages of background information on Ravel, and lots of helpful performance and musical suggestions. There are also a number of errors in previous editions that are pointed out concisely in the score. One of the most helpful additions to the music are the suggestive (and sometimes the only feasible) fingerings that are provided, which can ease the pain of learning this immensely challenging music.

Johan de Moor is one of Hergés former assistants and a master of "the claire line". In this book (which is the first in a trilogy) he works together with Stefan Desberg to create a wonderful fantasy tale about a boy who enters a mysterious place invaded by the humans. I liked the book but the sequels are better.

Book Description
Most children fall into five basic personality types that stem from inborn physical characteristics: the sensitive child, the self-absorbed child, the defiant child, the inattentive child, and the active/aggressive child. Stanley Greenspan, M.D., is the first to show parents how to match their parenting to the challenges of their particular child. He identifies and vividly describes these five universal temperaments and then, with great empathy, shows parents how each of these children actually experiences the world and how to use daily childrearing to enhance an individual child's strengths and talents.
Customer Reviews:
Better books out there........2007-09-21
I've been reading many books like this one. I have a child with attention problems and one who is defiant. This book was hard to read and didn't really give me any good stategies that I haven't already learned in other books. Honestly, I had to skim though most of it because it was so boring. So, maybe I missed some good parts.
My favorite book so far is How To Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk. I highly recommend this book! This book gave me strategies to use for all four of my children and has made a big difference in how my children obey me, talk to me and talk to each other. We are all much happier. It is so wonderful that I am making my husband read it. Also, it is fun to read!
Outlined my daughter's temperment perfectly.......2007-06-06
This book was recommended to me by my daughter's (she's 3 now) neurological developmental pediatrician at Children's Hospital. I only regret that I just now read it. The highly sensitive child chapter outlines my daughter's life from birth through today, as well as many of the frustrating feelings I've had as a loving, yet confused parent. The book helps show how to best parent each of the five different types of children. The book states that you (the parent) are not the cause, but you can help be part of the solution via your parenting style. I started dog-earing the pages as I read the book so I could go back to the parts most on spot for my daughter. By the end of the chapter I realized that I had dog-eared almost every page. A must have for the parent of a challenging child (mine being the highly sensitive child).
Good service.......2007-05-09
Helped me to understand my child in an entirely different light. Helped me to understand the difference between what kind of child I thought she was and the type of child she really is!
Great book.......2007-02-15
I think this was a very easy read. Parents who have children with special needs or who are challenging should benefit from reading this book. I think if parents want more specific information about particular diagnoses they would need to look to another source. This would be a good book to start with. I feel there was good, positive advice given.

Outstanding reference tool.......2005-01-11
I went into a bookstore in search of a different book but purchased this one instead after browsing through the chapter I identified as my 2 year old daughter, a highly sensitive child. I agreed with everything the author described in regard to this character, and I even found myself in the book. As a teacher and parent, I believe this is the best book I have seen in recognizing and nurturing the five different "challenging" children. Even my husband, who is always a bit skeptical with parenting books, was amazed at how on-target this one is. I highly recommend this book for anyone not only wishing to identify with a "challenging" child but also desiring to assist that child as he/she deals with the daily struggles that face that particular temperment.

Vegan Comfort Food.......2007-10-02
My husband and I have been vegans for two years, and most of the cookbooks I tried have either ethnic food (which can be great) or haute cuisine with 500 ingredients (which can also be great). But often what I really want to eat is comfort food--food my mom used to cook, but vegan. If that is what you need, this is the cookbook for you.
I own 2 dozen vegetarian or vegan cookbooks, but this is the only one I really use. Not only is every recipe delicious, but the author teaches you how to substitute non-animal ingredients to make your favorite dishes. Plus, she is fun and chatty--just the sort of person you want to share your kitchen with.
Amazing.......2007-02-02
I chose this cookbook based on reviews and WOW! My family has loved every recipe we've tried...corn pudding, pineapple/pecan upside down cake, shortning bread fried "chicken," "fish" sandwiches, apple cobbler. This is probably the best cookbook I've found in a long, long time. Fabulous food, fun, chatty style. Really innovative (I've never seen vegetarian versions of Southern food). I thought people were exaggerating when they said non-vegetarians loved certain of these dishes (yeah, not in my family, I thought) but I watched with astonishment as my husband polished off every last tofu "steak" on the platter, oblivious to the fact the rest of us wanted more--this is just not like him!
It's hardly the healthiest cookbook available--many things are fried or have tons of oil, like much traditional Southern cooking, but I've found I can reduce the fat/oil without any problems in the results (ie, The cobbler called for 2 cups of margarine (yeah, really!) but I only used 1/2 cup and it was still fabulous. Most (or all?) of the recipes are vegan. I'm not vegan, so sometimes I substitute eggs or milk, but I've also learned about new alternatives which has been fun. I adore this cookbook. Now I'm just afraid I'll never find another one I like as well!
Cookin' Southern Vegetarian Style.......2007-01-05
This is a good recipe book as it has a lot of different recipes that I would not have tried.
I'm addicted to gravy now..........2005-08-14
Ok, so I grew up a northerner who never really had grits or white cornbread or a real live mess o' greens in my life. Now I am proud to say that even my carnivore southern husband will eat chicken fried tofu (and he hates tofu!) and just about anything else I make from Ann Jackson's excellent cookbook. I had been a vegetarian for years, a little fearful of going vegan, and this book helped make the leap effortlessly. The only problem is, now I am addicted to gravy. GRAVY for pete's sake! (not to mention the "addicting" tempeh chicken salad, cornbread stuffing, etc..) And I want Ann Jackson to know that I always wear my vintage kitty cat apron when I bake my vegan pies!
ps - my grandmother taught me how to make stickies when I was 5, but I never knew what to call them before.
Must have cookbook.......2005-02-27
I am a vegan yankee who has recently moved to the south. My vegan friendly southern boyfriend claims that everything I have made from this book captures the true essence of southern cooking. The first thing I made is the "Fried Chicken" Tofu & Gravy and he asked if I could make it again the next night! The recipes are very easy to understand and Ms. Jackson's tips and quips make the book very enjoyable to read. Most of the recipes can be made with ingredients most vegans already have around the house and are also very adaptable. I would strongly suggest that even if you only have a couple vegan cookbooks, and you like hearty, easy to make food, make this book a part of your library. Warning: the dishes in this book are quite addictive; make more than you think you will eat!

This book is great and a MUST HAVE for serious and casual or would be collectors of Candy Containers. I have been collecting glass Candy Containers for many years and have just begun collecting the plastic containers. This is the BEST book on the subject. It is well organized and provides just enough background on the history of candy containers. It must have taken thousands of hours to compile such an extensive list and take all those pictures... Such great detail! The price evaluations are surprisingly accurate. Even though there is a disclaimer that value is what it is worth to you and the hobby is ment for fun. What a book. I bought 6 of 'em for gifts.

All in all, I think this is a great book and do recommend it to any one that enjoys collecting fun "stuff"!

Great garden book.......2007-06-27
Since much of my yard is shaded, and we still love flowers, this book is just what the Dr. ordered. Have planted several plants described in this book and they are healthy and doing well.
Info Too Sparse.......2006-02-28
I was disappointed in the too-brief description of the plants. Not enough info. Perhaps typically Taylor's but I expected more.
Great book for shade gardeners.......2005-09-02
I bought this book to help a friend who built her dream house on a wooded lot find plants and flowers that would bloom and grow. We were thrilled to find that all the plants listed would grow in our climate area (Pennsylvania). The book provides a good selection of plants without overwhelming a novice with too many choices and hard-to-find or tricky plants. We were very pleased to be able to find plants that would fit some of her problem areas (under trees, wet spots, etc.) and fit her requirements of providing her with real bloom without having to plant annuals every year.
Taylor's 50 Best Perennials for Shade:Essy Plants for More Beautiful Gardens (Taylor's 50 Best.......2005-08-15
Excellent book for the price!
it is what it says .... and a bit more.......2002-05-03
Subtitled 'Easy Plants for More Beautiful Gardens', this book is a pithy reference for gardeners in urban and suburban areas who are trying to fill shady spots with attractive blooms and foliage. I've had the book for a year and got good results this year using plants I chose, based on this author's advice, last year.
The book starts with a short chapter on the basics: soil, hardiness zones, mulching, planting, watering and pests -- one paragraph each. Each of fifty plants then gets one-and-a-half pages (and the print is big) -- a photo, a paragraph of introduction to the plant followed by how and where to grow instructions, a mention of varieties, and a chart that gives zone hardiness, bloom time, light, height and interest. Also of value are sidebars on a wide variety of topics, e.g. planting under trees, winter protection, wildflowers from seeds, propagating by division, woodland planting, coordinating strong color, controlling slugs. These sidebars are made more valuable by their inclusion in the index. There is also a glossary and a hardiness zone map.
This is an enjoyable and informative book, but if you are a neophyte you might also want to get a companion book that covers basics more thoroughly, and if you are a truly devoted gardener you might want to get a book that devotes more time to each species and/or discusses more plants.

Book Description
James Sexton met Ignacio Bizarro Ujpán in 1970, when Sexton traveled to Guatemala for the first time as a graduate student in anthropology. Ignacio became Sexton's research assistant and, as the men's friendship grew over the years of fieldwork that followed, Sexton asked Ignacio to keep a detailed journal. In his diaries, Bizarro chronicles more than a quarter century of the turbulent history of Guatemala, returning again and again to the themes of community solidarity, civil violence, alcohol abuse, resistance to repression, political turmoil, and the reinforcement of traditional and religious values that color daily life in the Maya communities of Guatemala's highlands.
Joseño: Another Mayan Voice Speaks from Guatemala covers the period from 1987-98 and is the fourth and latest volume of Ignacio's diary, the authentic life history of a common man, a campesino, a principal (elder) in his town, and a Tzutuhil Indian whose life has spanned the ongoing struggle for democracy and economic justice in Guatemala. His vivid and plain-spoken account of life among the Maya during the war between guerrillas and the army in the 1980s and 1990s offers detailed descriptions of the atrocities committed by both sides and brings the reader into a Mayan world richly textured with indigenous beliefs and practices. Ignacio's diary also records the Mayan cultural revitalization sweeping Guatemala, as well as the fortunes of the Indian peoples who have so often been pawns in the vicious power struggles between Left and Right.
The vivid life story of a Maya Indian during the last two tumultuous decades in Guatemala. A story alive with indigenous beliefs and practices, and a different perspective from that of Rigoberta Menchú.

Customer Review - February 8, 2002.......2002-02-09
Reviewer, Dr. Janet M. Carey from Littleton, CO
Within this extremely interesting and timely book Sexton translates Tzutuhil Mayan Ignacio Bizarro Ujpan's diary entries of eleven years from 1987 to 1998. Sexton's Introduction expertly presents a backdrop of the historical, political and cultural contexts the Guatemalan Indian people find themselves in today as they attempt to survive the modern political climate in their ancient land. Sexton skillfully blends Bizarro's eyewitness accounts of the horror resulting from being Indian in Guatemala. Bizarro tells the story of his people as they cope with being caught between opposing forces of state military troops and the guerrilla bands that have wrapped Guatemala in decades of civil violence.
Via Bizarro's graphic personal narrative, Sexton excitingly and sometimes somewhat sadly, brings to the reader the ongoing, heartbreaking realities experienced by Bizarro, his family and friends. Throughout this book it is evident, despite unbelievable hardship, that the Guatemalan Mayan Indian people continue to love their country and sense of place. Bizarro's statement of, "that is why I say that in Guatemala there is no peace," is followed with his words, "Guatemala is such a beautiful country, so good that God has placed its green countryside in the center of America, where the little birds sing their songs in praise of God All-Powerful. But it's a pity that my beautiful country is going everyday from bad to worse. Every day they [current political regimes] are bathing it with the blood of their [Mayan] children who loved so much this beautiful land of the quetzal."
Sexton's ability to pursue the anthropological method of life-history fieldwork with Bizarro, which now spans more than three decades, is not commonplace. Bizarro and Sexton have collaborated for a period of over thirty years. This fascinating, firsthand account of the modern Tzutuhil Mayan lifeway as told by Bizarro and translated by Sexton, is only made possible through their long, continuous relationship. Bizarro's is a most touching story. Sexton, in his choice of photographs, illustrations and admirable organization of the book, brings together the beauty and the strength of the Tzutuhil Mayan culture around Lake Atitlan as Bizarro tells how his people live with modern-day political dramas as they unfold in the highlands of Guatemala.
