The Tale of Cuckoo Brow Wood covering 24th of April 1907 to May 1st, is the third of the Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter by Susan Wittig Albert. Miss Felicia Frummety is not keeping the rat population down at Hill Top Farm and the village cats have issued an ultimatum. Ridley Rattail has had it with the rowdy rats that have moved into the attic so he posts an ad for cats to rid himself of these undesirables. Of course the humans have their share of problems, Major Kittridge has returned to Sawrey with a wife, dashing the hope of Dimity Woodcock. The village is invited to meet the new lady of the manor but rumors are rampant when it's learned she was an actress. There's also the rumor that the Major is planning to develop his shoreline property. The Vicar's cousin and his wife have moved in and the Vicar is far too kind to toss them even after they've outstayed his patience. Jeremy Crosfield, who is an excellent student, has to leave school and start his apprenticeship since he can't afford to continue his schooling -- the animals and humans are concerned about this event. And Beatrice arrives once again to spend some time at her farm.

Okay, up front I have to say I'm really enjoying these books. The interweaving of the various threads balancing the point of view of the humans and the animals is seamless. With each book, I gain more respect for Albert's ability to slip her stories into the undocumented bits of the Beatrix Potter timeline. She also maintains that playful seriousness that I also found in the Potter's little books. The characters are fully developed and while the mysteries are light they are ones that would have serious impact on the people of the story and their environment.

In this story, the small folk of the woods, fairies play a part. Are they real? Well I think that's for each of us to decide, and the author plays the story with a light hand to give us all a chance to believe as we will. After all if you can accept talking animals then are fairies that much of a stretch?

These are perfect books for when you are feeling a bit down. They are just the thing to help restore your believe in the inherent goodness of humankind and to help you see the world around in a different light. No, I don't think the author has a message to hit us with; she just tells a good story with a light touch that leaves us feeling more upbeat and in this summer's heat that's a wonder in itself.

This third book in the Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter is just as much fun and as charming as the first two. It makes you want to find the Potter illustrations from her "little books," so that the faces and personalities of the people involved in the stories become even more familiar.
With the world as it is now, it's a joy (and a relief) to immerse oneself in the world of a century ago with the friends one met in childhood.

These are just wonderful stories - for children, for fans of Beatix Potter, for anyone who enjoys mystery and fantasy. I picked up these books quite by accident, and found them reminiscent of my old favorite classics like "A Secret Garden." Very interesting stories - both as stand alone books and as part of the series.

She Does It Again!.......2007-05-15

Once again Susan Wittig Albert delights us with the third novel in The Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter. The heroine in this novel solves another crime and befriends and assists three young people in the village who are in need of help from the "wee folk". This novel speaks of love and compassion in both the human and animal world. The characters are evolving wonderfully and the animal ones have become more realistic, if that's possible. People and animals alike work together to make the world of Near and Far Sawrey a better place. I anxiously await the next novel in this series.

Ferret lovers - any animal lover - will adore this book. Bach, being a ferret owner, captures ferrets in all their wonderful glory and personifies them as rescuers of shipwrecked animals.

The Coast Guard rescues humans - but what about any animals on board? Why the Rescue Ferrets, of course! It's a wonderful tale that will delight both young and old. I have all three books in the "Ferret Chronicles" and can't wait till he writes the next one.

Very well written, the story moves right along and Bach's attention to detail makes you feel like you're right there in the action. Great job, Mr. Bach :)

PS: ferrets are not vicious and my five have never bitten anyone. However, if the idiot in the prior review ever met mine I wouldn't stop them heh heh

Once you learn about the optimum diet it's hard to go back. You will definitely reconsider getting a greasy burger, anything deep fried or pesticide treated strawberries... You will learn how important the fats are, what are the right fats and the quality to look for. You will learn that high protein intake is overrated and may even cause kidney and liver problems. Too much dairy can cause allergies and sinus infections. Large carnivorous fish like swordfish for example can be toxic. Meat byproducts are not good for you. But this book is not about limitations, it's about learning and expanding your dietary horizons. It's about the right habits and the right attitude. "Eat more fruits and vegetables" will become engraved in your mind! I couldn't wait to start using his advice. I did not have the recipes because I did this book on tape. However they are available at Dr. Weil's website [...]. I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Weil. My husband got us on to this by listening to the book on tape. We were so fascinated with it all, that we bought the book and three more to give to family. My husband has lost 10 lbs in about 2 weeks and I've lost about 20 in the last 4 months. We had no idea just what we were eating! Now our three year old is getting on board and eating more of her vegetables. It's just a matter of getting educated and learning what your really doing to your body. Once you read this book - get ready - because your now too educated to put the same things in to your body that you once thought were the norm. We look better, our skin is clearer and more glowing, my husband can see his abs again :) and the biggest thing is that my husband is now off of Nexium after changing his eating habits. He has been on it for the last year, and has taken heartburn medicine for the last 10 years. He's been off of Nexium for 3 weeks now and feels great! Kudos to Dr. Weil!!!

Don't waste your time with this book. This book does not cover electric steamers. It doesn't even mention how to adapt the recipes to an electric steamer. Some recipes are a bit difficult to understand because it is poorly written. The pictures are great - that is the only thing good about this book.

if you are looking for helpful tips and everyday recipes. I was a little bit disappointed. Instead of full page pictures I would like to have found about spicing up steamed food generally. It will get a good place in my cookbook library but I doubt that I will use it much

Here are imaginative recipes that can be prepared with a minimum of fuss. Steaming is a quick way to prepare foods healthfully. I particularly like her fettucini primavera, where she boils the noodles in the bottom of the steamer while steaming the vegetables on top! I'm looking forward to trying the garlic chicken with cucumber and grapes as well. Not only are there many tempting recipes to try [also put together as suggested menus with timing], the book also teaches one how to use the technique more creatively than I thought was possible.

It was o.k. A good introduction and history of the breed.......1999-04-01

The introduction pages, particularly the history of the breed were interesting and insightful. The grooming pages left some to be desired as they concentrate more on clipping the dog, rather than hand stripping. Only by hand stripping can the Lakeland retain the benefits of the coat it was intended to have. The last half of the book was fluff, general dog information, which is common to pet-store type books. Were the book more breed specific throughout it would be more useful to the serious Lakeland fancier.

This book convinced me to get Maddie the Mad Dog. Maddie is the BEST dog I have ever owned or knew. I recommend this book strongly if anyone is thinking about getting a Lakeland Terrier. The best dog breed on the earth.

The struggle between Egypt and Iraq over Arab hegemony constitutes the main theme of this study. Focussing on the struggle over Middle Eastern defense between 1945-58, and culminating in the conflict over the Baghdad Pact (1955-58), it sheds new light on Arab politics during the period under review. This research concentrates predominantly on the regional actors. The underlying assumption is that policies were not necessarily formulated in Washington and London, and that -- often enough -- major decisions taken in Ankara, Cairo, Baghdad, Damascus, Amman and other Arab capitals affected decision-makers in Western capitals. The Quest for Hegemony in the Arab World is based on newly-released British, American and Israeli documents, as well as on all available Arab sources. The study's value rests upon its discussion of the Baghdad Pact, a significant event which was hitherto neglected, yet marked a watershed in modern Arab history. This study's approach offers an analytical framework with which the present struggle for hegemony in the Arab world may be examined.

The present study offers a thorough account of the activities of the radical left in Turkey between 1960-1980 and shows how these formed a major contributing factor to the political instability of the country and the military coups that took place in March 1971 and September 1980. The military coup of May 1960 liberalized political life in Turkey, and a legal leftist movement arose, combining in its ranks social-democratic, trade-unionist and Marxist elements. Many of these were united in the framework of the Turkish Labour Party. The ideological and political struggle within the leftist movement led to a split in the Labour Party and to the formation in the 1970s of several legal socialist parties, each of which adopted its own model of socialism: "Soviet," "Chinese," "Turkish," "Scandinavian," "North Korean." The 1980 military coup terminated the legal activity of the marxist parties. Some merged with the Communist Party, which operated illegally, others sought ways of legalizing their activity in the new political conditions of Turkey.

During the 1950's the West European Socialist parties found themselves divided on the question of "European integration". This cleavage not only separated different national parties from each other but caused deep and painful rifts within national parties themselves. The related controversies form the core of this volume, consisting of a synthetic analysis, thirteen national case studies, and testimonies of three "eyewitnesses" (Marinus van der Goes van Naters, Christian Pineau, Mario Zagari) closely involved with the events described. The collection deals with an important aspect of the pre-history of the European Economic Community and provides a useful tool for its comparative study.
