This specific Edition.......2007-03-13
I agree with those above who praise Val in general and this book specifically. It is one of the best crime/mystery series that I have stumbled across. What I would like to focus on with this review though is what I think of this specific edition released in hard bound by Poisoned Pen Press. It is hard-bound wrapped in Red Morroccan Leather and marbled front and back boards and covered with a clearsleave for protection. it is a limited edition of 300 each numbered and signed by the author. Also, it has a forward written by Michael Connelly and is signed by him as well. It is truly an amazing edition and a must have for the die hard McDermid collector.
A Great Read.......2007-01-10
I happen to love British mysteries. I read the books & have followed some mystery series on BBCA. Wire in The Blood was part of a series & I made sure I was home to see it every week. The book fleshed out the characters with whom I was familiar, but it also is more comprehensive than any TV show or movie can hope to be. It has a complicated plot (or in this case we should say plots) that keeps you reading when you ought to be doing chores or maybe hitting the sack. I kept making time to read another bit.

sadism and psychology.......2005-07-20
As I've noted in other reviews, I think Val McDermid is a talented writer, her books surpassing much that is currently being produced in the crime/horror/procedural genre. The Wire in the Blood is also well written, with a compelling plot, credible characterization, and a smarmy, creepy narcissist for a villain. I enjoyed the book and read it quickly to reach the dramatic conclusion. There are descriptions of sadistic violence, but for the fairly squeamish reader that I am, they were bearable. The one problem I see, and this is just my opinion, is that the protagonist, Tony Hill, is just a bit too cool and too clever, in some ways just as plasticky smooth as the killer. Not a hero who's easy to warm up to, despite his post-traumatic sexual problems. Fortunately, Carol Jordan's persona is competent but still fallible, easier for the reader to relate with.
Wire in the Blood is a good, gripping psychological thriller and while Tony Hill could be more likeable, this doesn't detract from the value of the story.

This is my third book by Val McDermid. What a book! I'm surprised anyone gave this book less then a 4 star rating. This book is excellent, intelligent, interesting, etc...
The book is a bit slow at the beginning but I really got into it anyways. And (SPOILER ALERT), I love when writers can kill off a "main" character and not bring it back (Patricia Cornwell, anyone?). I admit the character that dies was just introduced in this book but still, I had grown to like her and she was well developped in the book.
I am for sure going to get the TV series based on this book and others by McDermid.

A refreshingly different approach to fantasy.......2003-02-23
I don't believe that justice has been done to Elizabeth Boyer's book "The Troll's Grindstone" by some of the reviews here, which prompts me to add my own opinion.
The tale has an interesting basis in Scandinavian mythology, some very nice plot twists and is overall a good read - highly recommended. I found it tough to put down - and an engaging tale.
I came to this web site seeking a sequel, or at least a similar book by the author.
An OK read, but a cool Myth.......2003-01-15
When I first read this book I really was a litle let down. It kind off avoided all of my expectations (which I had gotten from a review in Dragon Magazine). It had nice characters, but then it really played out exactly the way you thought it would. That kind of balanced it all out. It was a nice, but ultimately forgetable book.
But then I looked at it in a different way. After I pondered it, it hit me that this tale was very nearly a perfect replica of old tales of myth. Once I looked at it in that light I appreciated it a bit more. The tale is well crafted, and if it were sent back in time to compete with Beowulf I doubt we'd ever spot its modern roots.
That said, there are flaws. The most poignant of which is the fact that the "hero" of the tale is not the one doing all of what he is supposed to do. He gets all the credit while his companions do the work.
A man from our world (a Scipling) is decieved into entering the world of the Alfar (a land of magic) to retrieve a sword, mend a broken pentacle, and get a mystic grindstone in order to lift a curse and free the day people. To do so he must pose as the man who brought this plague of misery onto the day people. The viking reluctantly agrees to help, and eventually gets drawn into the action and desires to help. Liefr is the everyman of the tale, who is really a brave warrior, but it is his "relative" Thurid who does all the work of the novel. Read it, you'll see what I mean. This is a good starting point.
More support for Boyer.......2000-02-01
I need to up the score here, I dont want anyone to skip over this book if Amazon finds copies still floating out there. I read this book in grade 7, so that must be about 12 years ago or so! wow! It hooked me on Fantasy, I have read all other books Boyer ever wrote, and even used to take the time to read them to my younger sibling. Troll's Grindstone had engaging characters and one of the greatest novel endings ever! Fabulous!

I have to admit that at first this book was hard to get into due to the difficult names.....so I made up my own! The story was original and engaging. I felt the characters were developed and beleivable. Anyone who enjoys magic and the idea of other realms that one can be transported to will like this book. I am now reading the next book of the series "The Curse of Slagfid".
If nothing else to read, it might do the job.......1999-03-29
This book is not one of the most exciting books out there. I found it to be quite dull and very forgetable. Read it only if you have nothing else to do.

Phenomenal! Meditation From The Mat is a wonderful read and one of those books you will go back to for the rest of your life. Deep insights from the heart that could have only come by moving into the stillness and returning. Rolf Gates format of breaking down the Eight limbs of yoga over the course of 365 days is totally inspiring and goes straight to the core. Many books explain the Eight fold path of yoga in academic terms but this is the only book that I have come across in which deep personal reflection has been the catylast for profound insights . If you thought yoga was only about postures(asanas) then think again and read this book, then run for your mat!!!

Definitely one to own, and read everyday; whether a yoga instructor (as am I,) a beginner, one who practices religiously, or anyone looking for enlightenment on yogic principals, or just a more serene way to look at life, this book should have some words of wisdom for you. Of course you should expect authentic recipes from a book like this--why else would you want to buy it? If you follow Bruno's directions, you make a lousy deep dish that tastes like a hunk of bread with tomato sauce on it, not real Chicago deep dish pizza. I have duplicated Uno's, Giordano's, etc. at home and Bruno is way, way off the mark.

Not Restaurant Recipes.......2002-12-21
If you try these recipes, you will not duplicate pizzas cooked at Uno's, Gino's, Giordano's, etc. You will make a decent pizza (and I've had to experiment quite a bit to improve on Bruno's recipes), but don't be fooled into thinking that these are the real thing. And the basic deep dish recipe is just the same as the one you can get free at many sites on the internet. A better book is Evelyn Slomon's, but hers suffers, too.
Not Perfect Pizza, but Very Good!.......2002-04-30
First of all, NO, these are not the secret recipes of Giordano's, Gino's, Pizzeria Uno, or the others.
They are, however, very good pizza recipes. My main criticism of the book is that some of the instructions are incomplete. For example, in the stuffed pizza recipe he tells you to put the sauce on top of the pizza without pre-cooking the pizza at all. In my experience, that always results in a doughy, partially-uncooked top crust. I prebake the pizza with no sauce for about 10 minutes, then add the sauce, and it's great. But Bruno should've told me that; I shouldn't have had to figure it out for myself.
Yes, I would like to get my hands on the actual Giordano's recipe, but these recipes still beat any pizza I can get here in Oregon.

I don't think this book could be any better. Here's my testimonial...
This book helped us identify a suitable puppy (and not just adopt the first one we fell in love with). The puppy we chose had serious discipline issues, but this book helped us retrain him. He grew to be an exemplary dog. Throughout his life, people asked us who had trained him. They were incredulous that our quiet, obedient, good-natured dog had once been a furniture-devouring, un-housebreakable, barking maniac that had TWICE been returned to the shelter before he was even six months old, and that we had retrained him ourselves. We owe a tremendous debt to this book.

I adopted a 8-week-old puppy from Humane Society and being a first time dog owner, this book is very helpful with my raising my puppy. In a month, she will be 4 years old and as a puppy, she was a GREAT puppy and today, as a dog, she is a GREAT dog! The other people have commented to me how well-behaved my dog was when she was puppy. Today, people still tell me how smart and well behaved my dog is.

Men and Women in Qing China is an analysis of Chinese prescriptions of gender as represented in Cao Xueqin's famous eighteenth century Chinese novel of manners, The Red Chamber Dream or The Story of the Stone. Drawing on feminist literary critical methods it examines Qing notions of masculinity and femininity, including themes such as bisexuality, motherhood, virginity and purity, and gender and power. Its central aim is to challenge the common assumption that the novel represents some form of early Chinese feminism by examining the text in conjunction with historical data. The book will be especially important to those interested in issues of gender in China, the history of Chinese literary criticism and the application of feminist theory to the Asian text.

McDowell's trip home elicits plenty of memories--how her neighbors reacted to bus boycotts and boycotts of white-owned businesses, going to hear Martin Luther King speak, and the murder of her own activist pastor. Leaving Pipe Shop is an evocative portrait of one African American community's struggle to cope with the changes that swept through a nation.

McDowell has written a talking book. The dialog brings the people to life and gave this reader the feeling of accompanying the author on visits to her community. Matriarchial society, authoritarian upbringing of children, love and caring, laughter and sadness as well as the events of the 50's and 60's are memorably brought into focus. I urge you not to ignore this little-known gem of a book
