Book Description
Investigator Wayne Weston is found dead of an apparent suicide in his upscale Cleveland suburban home. His wife and six-year-old daughter are now missing. The police think the former Marine murdered them. Hoping to exonerate his son, Weston’s father hires PIs Lincoln Perry and Joe Pritchard.
Perry and Pritchard soon discover there is much more lying beneath the surface, including rumors of gambling debts, extortion, and a Russian mob that likes to wield baseball bats. But just when Perry and Pritchard believe they are making swift progress, a millionaire real estate tycoon and the FBI advise them to back off of the investigation.
Then without warning, another murder suddenly forces them to change direction in the case as they uncover a trail of deadly twists—but the most shocking secret of all has yet to be unraveled...
Customer Reviews:
A Promising Beginning........2007-01-12
Michael Koryta's first novel is very good -- almost excellent. But not quite. The story is excellent, great plot and fascinating characters -- especially the Russian mob boss! The only flaw is the inconsistency of Lincoln Perry's actions -- sometimes so sharp, and other times totally bone-headed! Granted, he's the junior member of the Perry/Pritchard team, so perhaps we have to make a few allowances.
However, the inconsistency continued with the character of Aaron Kincaid; the author gave us no clues as to Kincaid's real motivation initially. A slight hint - at some point - would have made more sense!
I'm hoping we'll learn more about Joe Pritchard's earlier life in future stories. And I'm also sure Michael Koryta's character development will improve in the future. He's a talented writer. Altogether, a very promising start to a new P.I. series.
Not bad.......2006-10-06
I give Mr. Koryta credit for crafting a decent novel his first time out. I did enjoy this novel. The PI novel though is a very crowded field and for my money I'll take Elvis and Joe over Lincoln and Joe anyday. That said It was a commeplling read with interesting characters. And the suspense builds to a fever pitch. If Elvis and Joe aren't handy Licoln Perry just might fill the bill.
Amazing.......2006-08-06
Even though I knew this author had received rave reviews not only because it was a debut but because of the his age, I was still skeptical. I finished Tonight I Said Goodbye this morning and have to agree with every glowing review I read. The characters were interesting and all had a purpose in the story. The dialogue seemed realistic. What amazed me most was the consistent, smooth flow of the story. At no point did I stop and think, wait...what? Some reviewers have compared Koryta's characters to Robert Crais, Dennis Lehane, etc. I read these authors and did not think about their characters once while reading "Goodbye." I will definitely be purchasing Koryta's second book and hope Lincoln and Joe are around for a good while.
This kid can write!.......2006-07-19
I am not one to write reviews--in fact, this is my first. Over the decades I have read many a detective genre novel and, in my view, Koryta's Tonight I said Goodbye is first-rate. This book keeps you hooked to the end and does not disappoint. Buy it.
Stunning Debut from a Young Indiana U Grad.......2006-03-19
This is the sort of debut novel that makes me think of David Housewright's fine 1995 debut, "Penance", which won the Edgar for Best First Novel. In fact, Koryta was a finalist for the same award. I don't know who he lost to, but they had better be really good, because Koryta's debut is a 'can't put it down' tour de force.
With a lot of local flavor (just like "Penance"), Koryta introduces us to a grim crime which looks to have only one solution. Of course, it is more complicated than that, and before long our heroes are contending with the Russian mafia, FBI agents with non-Federal agendas, and the machinations of the wealthiest man in Cleveland.
The relationships between the main characters are well drawn, and most of the ancillary charcters have sufficient depth to engage us. To speak much more about the plot would spoil several twists and turns that deserve to surprise on their own.
Koryta credits jobs with a local PI in Bloomington as well as a job on the local newspaper as having helped craft his style. He has a classy dedication to Bob Hammel, a wonderful journalist, who took him under his wing at the beginning of the novel. Not only has he produced a first class debut, he seems like a nice and genuinely interesting young man. I can only wish him many successes with is future ouvre.

Book Description
Practical advice and information from the world's foremost experts on autism -- and a mother's own hard-won lessons from helping her son recover from the disorder
When Karen Siff Exkorn's son, Jake, was diagnosed with autism, she struggled to pull together comprehensive information about the disorder. Fortunately, she was able to educate herself quickly, and her extensive at-home treatment of her son led to his amazing full recovery. But the journey wasn't easy, and now, in The Autism Sourcebook, Siff Exkorn offers parents the wisdom she wishes she'd had at the beginning.
Recent studies show that there is a worldwide epidemic of autism. More than 1.5 million people are affected in the United States alone, with one in every 166 children diagnosed. Early detection and early intervention are two of the key factors in improving prognosis -- but too often, writes Siff Exkorn, parents get bogged down in denial or confusion about the still mysterious disorder, and are unable to take the necessary steps. Providing accessible medical information gleaned from the world's foremost experts, Siff Exkorn offers an inside look at families with children who have autism, and ties in her own firsthand experience as a parent. The author shares valuable knowledge about the following:
- What the diagnosis really means
- Understanding and accessing treatment options
- Knowing your child's rights in the school system
- Coping with common marital and familial stress
- Making the stigma of autism a thing of the past
With extensive appendices, including the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Diagnostic Criteria for the Five Pervasive Developmental Disorders, and carefully selected lists of Internet resources, recommended readings, and top autism organizations worldwide, The Autism Sourcebook is the single most comprehensive, practical resource available to parents and loved ones of children with autism.

No good biomedical help here.......2007-07-03
So many ASD kids are sick with bowel disease and live in terrible pain. This book only covers the bare minimum of ASD issues and deals effectively only with ABA treatment. Sadly, it takes far more to recover many children than ABA. Ms. Siff-Exhorn's book oversimplifies the very complex causes and medical problems that all too often go untreated or are simply viewed as behavioral.
Okay if you're just finding out about autism.......2006-12-10
But most of the information found in this book is easily found on the internet. I was hoping this book would help us find school/treatment for our 2 year old austistic son, but it was much different that I expected. Most of the material that was written was information about autism that I was already very well aware of.
Disappointed. :o(
Excellent Sourcebook.......2006-07-19
This is an excellent book if you're looking for something like an Autism encyclopedia. This isn't really one of those books that gets into too much personal detail about experiences with Autism, it's more of a guidebook and a reference manual for parents or ABA therapists. It has a plethora of information from diagnosis to dietary intervention. It covers all the bases and leaves you with plenty of hope for your child. Definitely a worthy buy for parents, teachers, or anyone else interested in learning more about Autism and how to intervene.
A Good Start for Newly Diagnosed.......2006-03-09
I wish this book had been around five years ago when my son was diagnosed. This is a great start, but ONLY a start. I feel there needs to be much more on sensory integration. My son is also PDD and ABA did nothing for his flapping and spinning. Newly diagnosed parents must remember that Autism isn't curable but treatable. With therapies, diet, and a good special ed teacher their child can live in our world very well. My son is now eight and looks, acts, talks like a typical boy. Certain social still cause stimming and behavior problems but all in all he's doing excellent. Again, this book is a great start.
Don't bother -- Save your money.......2006-01-03
Save your money ... this book is misleading, nothing new, and for anyone to claim that they have written a book that is "everything you need to know" about helping your child with Autism is, in itself, ludicrous.
Apparently "everything you need to know" is just using ABA therapy.
The Author, Karen Siff Exhorn, claims that her child is "completely recovered from Autism" (his actual diagnosis was PDD) but then the author also says that her son still needs a 1:1 ABA therapist to "support him" on playdates. The child is in 4th grade. That is hardly what I would consider to be "recovered".
What this author appears to consider "recovered" is her son's ability to speak, to be compliant, and to not "look autistic" ... meaning, she focused on ABA "training" to get her kid to not flap or shriek and to "look normal". "Looking normal" was the most important thing to her, it seems. So her kid sounds as if he can appear normal, which is great, but her son still doesn't know how to relate to kids, converse with them, or play ...
Half a page on Sensory Integration and a quarter of a page on Integrated Play Therapy can hardly be considered "everything you need to know".
We all have 1000 times more computing power at our fingertips right now than NASA used to get a man on the moon ... yet few of us make very good use of it.
It would be great if there were one book that would tell us everything we needed to know, but since every case of Autism is different, that is not possible. Forget this book and just search the web.

A good place to begin.......2007-09-03
This book is an excellent place to begin learning about Autism for any parent of a newly diagnosed child. It is also an excellent resource for teachers, family memebers or anyone else whose life will be touched because of Autism.
Helpful.......2007-06-10
This book was a great help to me as the mother of a two year old who is possibly autistic...waiting for our appointment at Kennedy Krieger...not only did it deal with facts and info but it also tackled the tough issues of how we feel as parents of a developmentally delayed child....everyday is a struggle and she lets us know that we are human too.
I am glad I read this book first as it talks about all the different therapies available and gives lots of info to think about...
Now a paperback with heart!.......2006-09-20
I have a loved one (nephew) that has been challenged with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). I felt that reading this book would be informative as well as showing my support for the family. Well it was, and then some.
What surprises me is that it is not a dry and tedious read. Author Karen Siff Exkorn manages to explain technical, diagnostic and therapeutic terms and processes in intelligent and uncomplicated English. Make no mistake - this is not a dim-witted "Autism for Dummies" style book either.
It is clear that she has been through much, for only the voice of experience could have this veracity. I was intrigued to read about her family's personal experiences. Her stories and examples involving her son, Jake, are understated and not drenched in sentimentality. It added a very real and human dimension to the book.
The book has four sections:
-Diagnosis
-Treatment
-Coping
-Healing
It also includes a large and pragmatic appendix; covering areas such as diagnostic criteria, organizations, resources, recommended reading, and a glossary.
At the end of each section are questions and answers. I found myself reading the questions and thinking to myself "Hey, now there is a good one!" No stone was left unturned.
I think many parents and guardians will also appreciate chapter 7: "You Have the Power: Advocating for Your Child's Legal Rights". It is clear and practical information, loaded with parent's experiences and helpful tips on how to "work the system". There are a variety of programs and Siff Exkorn explains how to jump the hurdles and stay on top of it all.
There is an aspect often neglected by other books and articles regarding ASD: the emotional impact on the care-givers and the family. Siff Exkorn devoted much of the last two chapters to this very subject matter. Here she advocates taking care of ourselves, and ways to do it, so that we remain effective care-givers and create a content family life that includes a child with an ASD. It was reassuring to read that others have gone through similar experiences.
I am most grateful to Karen Siff Exkorn for authoring this much needed book, and would recommend it to anyone who has interest in the Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
By the way, her son is completely mainstreamed and it is obvious that some reviewers (of the hardcover) have not read the book.

Fine Collection and Commentary on Cuisine Influences.......2002-01-24
Taking Chineese, Greek and Roman cooking influences, Smith ofTV fame brings forth an offering which resembles the James Beard books which provide not only great recipes but a running commentary on the culture which produces the food and some experience remembrances by the author.
This is fun cooking and well done. Well representative of the cuisines and done with helpful hints on each.
A workhorse for the cook willing to use it to branch out and experiement in these formative areas of food history. For openers, try Spareribs with Black Beans and Pepper Sauce, Halvah Cake or the Seafood Risotto.
My humble opinion is that Roman cooking is slighted out of the three. See Malto Mario for some great Rome recipes.
My favorite Frugal Gourmet Cookbook.......2001-10-02
This book by Jeff Smith has to be my favorite one that he has written. This book focuses on recipes from China, Greece, and Rome. The recies in this book are flavorful, and very enjoyable. My favorite recipe in here is strangely enough Garlic, Eggs, and Pasta. There is a wide range in recipes, both in flavors and ingredients. Jeff Smith does an excellent job of paring history as well as anecdotes with all of his recipes. This should be a must add for anyone who enjoys historical cooking.
The Greek section outdoes the average Greek home cooking.......1998-10-25
Whenever I entertain my Greek relatives, they are amazed by my flair in their native cooking. Jeff's recipes are easy to follow and make Greek cooking simple.
One of my favorite books! ! !.......1998-05-11
Jeff Smith is on of my favorite authors. I know he is not a renouned one,but his cookbooks are so interesting especially Three Ancient Cusines. If you love different and exotic recipies, then buy this book!!! Chef Marian Thompson

Canine Terminology.......2007-03-30
What a book! For anyone in the dog industry, I found this book of canine terminology fascinating. I love it! To me it's the "Dog Dictionary". As I'm fairly new to the industry this book will certainly bring me up to speed.
Canine knowledge.......2004-12-25
If you can have only one book on canine terminology and structure, this is it. Thorough, interesting and well illustrated. It will help anyone understand breed standards and breeders' "dog talk".

A Great Beginners Book.......2007-02-27
Ifyou are looking for a comprehensive beginner's guide to orchids at a reasonable price this is it. The book is well organized, easy to understand, and decently illustrated. Photos and quality may not be of the best quality, but you can find those in one of the many other pictorial guides to orchids available. If you want to get growing, this book is a great start.
Excellent.......2006-03-20
This is a truly excellent starter and it's great for the medium level amatuer, too. There is a lot of information, yet it's not succint. The quality of the pictures is not satisfactory, however, this is one of the very few books which show overall plants, as opposed to show macro of flowers only. This is not a minor point: when I placed my first order online, I decided I was not going to buy dendrobium, because I don't like the plant. While this reflect my personal taste, knowng how the overall plants look like was a major plus. Moreover this book teaches how to measure the light intensity by simply using the lightmeter of your TTL camera. To me this information alone is worth the price of admission.
General Info.......2005-07-04
I found this book a little too general..and actually did not answer my pending questions about the cattleyas...still some valued info of a general nature about other varieties warrants by keeping it.It is good for identifying species and family.
A Good Beginners Book.......2005-01-05
If you are just starting out with orchids, this is a great, low cost, book for basic information and great for a quick reminder to the experienced grower when obtaining new orchids. I would not say this is the last book you will ever need if serious about growing orchids, but it a good place to start!
Information From Photos: poor.......2004-10-26
Summary: With the thousands of books about orchids, look a little further until you find a better book than this.
This book is designed for the person who doesn't know much about orchids, but wants to learn. Photographs are included with the intention of conveying information - but the quality of the paper, or the printing process, results in almost adequate resolution. Meridth Publishing must think photographic quality isn't important for this type of book, because it isn't designed to be photography book, but with low quality images, one can't distinguish that flowers shown are orchids, let alone be able to compare the images to gain a better understanding of the types of orchids - which is exactly part of the theoretical content of this book.
The person new to orchids will want to know how to pronounce the new vocabulary. Very limited information is provided in this area.

Book Description
Grow breathtakingly beautiful orchids right in your own home. New orchid hybrids are much easier to grow than their finicky ancestors. This practical guide contains the information you need to bring 120 orchids into bloom in a windowsill, under lights, or in a greenhouse.
Customer Reviews:
an excellent book for beginners.......1998-06-22
All About Growing Orchids provides a wealth of information for the beginner orchid grower and dispels the myth that orchids are difficult to grow. Attractively laid out (and priced), the easy to read text is complemented by colorful drawings and excellent photographs. Written primarily with the home hobbyist in mind, many of the photographs depict orchids displayed in the home, which should inspire readers to fully exploit the potential of these breathtaking flowers for home decoration.
To cover all this territory in 96 pages is a challenge and All About Growing Orchids succeeds admirably. What are the drawbacks? The biggest is that the Orchid Selection Guide, though it provides an excellent overview of the different types of orchids to grow in a few pages, inevitably has to resort to some generalities. The information on orchid sources is also due for an update, and the book could benefit from a guide to orchid resources on the Worldwide Web. Nevertheless, armed with this book, beginner orchid growers will be well on their way to learning how to grow and bloom orchids in their homes.

Indian Wars on the Western Plains.......2000-12-16
If you are interested in the post Civil War history of Westward expansion, Colonel MacKinzie's exploits are "must reading". He was one of the most effective Army commanders to serve in the southwest Texas theater of operations. You can agree or disagree with the way it was done, but it is important for us to understand the things that really happened. Hollywood has it all wrong! Good reading and I recommend it highly.
Entertaining, Fast Paced and Factual.......2000-07-25
I have followed the life of MacKenzie and read carefully all of the military records on his life, both public and private. The book is right up there with the best. It is entertaining, fast paced and factual, and I believe, historically correct. I appreciate the honesty regarding the cause of MacKenzie's death. This book is well worth reading and will be an important addition to your historical book shelf.
