5 out of 5 stars They Just Get Better and Better.......2007-02-02

The author Peter Tremayne obviously has a great knowledge of Ireland in the 7th century and also on the Irish Law of the period. His Sister Fidelma book are attracting what can only be described as a cult following, but they are of interest to anyone who likes historical novels or mysteries. This series of books are set in Ireland in the 7th century, a time when there was total equality for women. The lead character is the beguiling Sister Fidelma. She is a brilliant scholar, a leading authority on Irish law and the sister of a king. This is also a period in history when celibacy was not yet a part of religious life.

AD 666, an old monk and a set of relics have disappeared during the night from the Abbey of Imleach. Obviously the monk who has gone missing is of great concern to the Abbey, but the missing relics are of much greater concern. The relics are the political symbol of the entire kingdom and their disappearance threatens to undermine the peace and stability of the land.

While on a visit to the Abbey, Sister Fidelma is asked to investigate the matter and with the help of her friend and companion Brother Eadulf, Fidelma begins slowly but surely to unravel the mystery, but there are people who will stop at nothing, including murder to achieve their way.

1 out of 5 stars The Writer Who Bored His Readers..........2007-01-24

Wretched, awful prose, overuse of Latin terminology (trying to impress the readers?), and I plowed halfway through until finally I could not stand one more "pursed lips" or "grimaced violently" or other overuse of lame vocabulary. I have the next book in the series and I am donating it to charity, although perhaps the greater charity would be to throw it away so no one else has to suffer through this...

      Book Description

In September of 666 A.D., an aged monk and a set of relics disappear during the night from the Abbey of Imleach. The missing monk is a matter of great concern for the abbey. But the relics are a disaster of a much higher order. They are the priceless holy relics of St. Ailbe, the man who, in the fifth century, brought Christianity to the Irish kingdom of Muman, converted and baptized it's king, and founded the abbey. The relics themselves are the political symbol of the entire kingdom and their disappearance threatens to disrupt its continued peace and stability. On a visit to the Abbey of Imleach, Sister Fidelma, sister to Colgu, the current King of Muman, and an advocate of the Brehon Courts, is asked to investigate. With the help of her friend and traveling companion, the Saxon monk Brother Eadulf, Fidelma begins to slowly unravel the mystery behind the twin disappearances. But there are dark forces at work, which will stop at nothing - even murder - to achieve their aims.

5 out of 5 stars I Think the Best in this Series!.......2003-04-13

This book is the best in the series so far. The mystery was very good and kept me guessing until the end. In fact, I had picked another murderer and plotter entirely. Also, Fidelmaa is much more likeable in this series. My main complaint so far was that I really did not like her. She was too haughty and full of herself with an acid tongue. In this book, that seems to change. We meet a much more vulnerable Fidelma, but one who is still as smart as a tack. She finds her way through the morass and one or two red herrings to discover the murderer and to thrwart a very dangerous plot against her brother's kingship. She sets out to find out who arranged an assisination of her brother and a rival king who is supposedly trying to make peace with her brother's kingdom, and discovers a missing monk from a neighbouring abbey, an illegal mining operation and a very dangerous political plot. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and enjoyable mystery.......2001-09-12

The Monk who vanished is a mystery set in 6-7th century Ireland. It is very detailed and brings the reader easily to this ancient time without sounding like a history or anthropology lesson. The mystery stroy is very well developed and has unexpected twists and turns that are justified and well put together.

5 out of 5 stars This was worth waiting for!.......2001-01-30

As an avid reader of the Sister Fidelma books I was more than pleasantly surprised by The Monk Who Vanished. It kept me guessing from the start with unexpected twists and turns.

Fidelma's world is brought to life in this seventh installment in the mystery series. This is a highly personal adventure for her with her brother's kingdom at stake. As always there is more than meets the eye in this adventure. With all of the sub-stories Tremayne keeps you guessing as to whether it will all come together in the end or if they are separet mysteries unto themselves. With everything thrown at her, Fidelma keeps her cool and saves the day with her wit and incredibly sharp mind.

This was a story well worth waiting for. I eagerly await the next installment!

4 out of 5 stars The Monk Who Vanished.......2001-01-13

The stakes are high indeed in this seventh installment in the Sister Fidelma mystery series, because this time she is fighting to protect her brother's claim to the kingship of Murman.

The Ui Fidgente, a major clan of Murman, have been adversaries of Cashel for a long time, and indeed they have long challenged Cahsel's right to the kingship of Murman, refusing to pay tribute. Now however the current prince of Ui Fidgente, has decided to put all the bad blood between the two clans behind him and to negotiate a treaty of peace with Cashel. To this end, he and his retinue have come to Cashel in a gesture of goodwill in order to hammer out some form of an agreement. However, just as the two princes are about to exchange greetings, an unknown bowman shoots at them, wounding both men. He is later found dead, wearing the emblem of the Golden Chain, which identifies him as a member of Cashel's elite bodyguard. This proves to be a bad sign for Fidelma's brother, for if he is found guilty of the attempt of the prince of Ui Fidengente's life, the kingship of Murman would then be forfeit to the Ui Fidengente! Another bad sign: in the abbey at Imleach, the relics of the holy man Ailbe, has been stolen. Legend has it that if ever the relics were stolen then the kingship of Murman would fall from Cashel and chaos would ensue. It looks as if the two incidents are tied and that Fidelma will have to do some rather nifty detective work to discover who exactly is behind this move to take the throne away from her brother and start a war.

This historical mystery series is a really good one even if Peter Tremayne's writing style is a little to dense and dry. However he has struck gold in his creation of Sister Fidelma. In Fidelma, Tremanyne has created a brilliant and charming heroine, with a thirst to see justice done and set things right. The plot of this mystery novel is intriguing and a little convoluted, full of red herrings and sub-plots that have sometimes very little to do with the actual problem at hand. However the final denouncement where Fidelma finally lays all her cards on the table makes everything worthwhile: the somewhat dry and dense prose, the convoluted plot with all its red herrings, and the somewhat ranting style of communication that nearly everyone save Fidelma and Brother Eadulf seem to employ. A book well worth reading inspite of the few nit-picking problems I had with it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent historical mystery.......2000-12-29

The seventh century in Europe became known as the Dark Ages yet Ireland remained a beacon of light where learning and enlightenment continued unabated. Rulers from around the known world sent their leading scholars to learn so that they could return home and educate the leaders. Women were treated as equals and even held office in the church. Sister Fidelma, daughter of a king and sister of the current monarch, is both a religieuse and an advocate of the law.

Long time enemies the Prince of Vi Fidgente and Colgu of Cashel the King of Muman seek a truce. As they near Colgu's home, an assassin hits both men with arrows. The Prince's men kill the culprit before anyone can question him. The King and the Prince accuse each other of duplicity and attempted murder. Unless Sister Fidelma can prove otherwise, her regal brother will be considered guilty and punished under Irish law. However, the clues take her to the Abbey of Imleach where a monk and relics connected to the case are missing with little hope of eminent discovery.

THE MONK WHO VANISHED is a fascinating mystery filled with unexpected twists that often lead to false clues and the wonderful Sister Fidelma, sleuth extraodinaire. However, the true beauty of the tale lies in the descriptions of seventh century Irish life as seen through the eyes of the religious and aristocratic leaders. Peter Tremayne is a gifted storyteller who provides his audience with a vivid view as if the reader is actually there. Even after a delightful decade of the Sister's stories, the latest entry remains fresh and hopefully means the start of another decade of tremendous historical mysteries from Mr. Tremayne.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-07-17

This book gives details to the inside thoughts of the character while being true to the game found on dreamcast and playstation 2...You can understand what the characters are thinking, and what their plans are.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Art... Poor Storytelling.......2003-05-04

Being a fan of comic book art, video games, and zombies, I figured this graphic novel would be a unique treat... but I have mixed feelings. The art in this book is very nice and interesting, especially in the action sequences. It remains faithful to the game, in that the characters randomly find weapons, ammunition, puzzle keys, and herbs... although this adds to the choppy storytelling. Overall, the story is bland and uninteresting, much of it being told through Claire's non-stop self exposition. If you're a huge fan of the game and comic book art, you will probably enjoy this graphic novel. But, if you are looking to be engaged in a great zombie story you should look elsewhere.

          Book Description

Each brain finds its own special way -- that's the message in this delightful, colorful story by America's foremost expert on learning and childhood development.

Edward Hallowell, M.D., is a noted psychiatrist and teacher and a leading authority on attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. At many of his lectures worldwide he has read a story he wrote for children about how each person's brain is unique -- and it has resonated among the thousands of parents, teachers, and others who have heard it.

A Walk in the Rain with a Brain is the illustrated version of that story. In it, a little girl named Lucy is making her way down a rainy sidewalk when she spies, of all things, a brain -- Manfred, called Fred -- sitting forlornly in a puddle. The courtly cerebrum asks Lucy for help getting home, and as they walk along she worries that she's not smart enough. "Everyone's smart!" explains Fred. "You just need to find out at what!" Fred reassures her that each child learns and thinks differently -- and that every child has special talents.

Charming illustrations and a funny, whimsical story teach children to play and learn in order to find the strengths they have -- and a discussion guide at the end gives parents and educators the background support they need in order to help children understand and discover the sparkling individuality of their minds.

5 out of 5 stars Children love this book.......2007-01-13

I've bought a copy of this book for several children. Every time, the reaction has been the same. The child so loved the book that he/she wanted to take it to school for show and tell. Then the teacher would also so love the positive message of the book, that she would break her own rule and read the book to the class several times. One teacher praised the book so highly that I bought her a copy for future classes. This is a wonderful investment in a child's self-image and gives parents and teachers ideas for re-enforcing the child's individuality. I wish this book had been around when my kids were little. I keep an extra copy on hand ready to give when the opportunity arises. Thank you, Dr. Hallowell.

This book was highly recommended to me by a Speech/Language Pathologist. As a Special Education Consultant, I plan to use this book as a resource, on loan to support staff and schools. It fits in nicely with our Differentiated Instruction philosophy.

          5 out of 5 stars A favorite .......2006-07-11

We recieved this book as a gift a couple of years ago. My child (Katie)loved it and still selects it for story time. She enjoys the story and the graphics. Katie has enjoyed the story as it is written and often makes up her own version. It is one of a few books she has taken to her friends house. As a parent I love the message about how everyone is special in some way. A message most of us didn't recieve when we were growing up.

5 out of 5 stars great book about "smart".......2006-04-08

As a Special Education teacher I enjoyed this book and how it explains the brain. I listened as Dr. Hallowell read this book to a group of children, what an awesome experience. A great book to read to all children but especially lower elementary special education students.

5 out of 5 stars Smart We All Are.......2005-06-14

Written as a children's book, Dr. Hallowell's message is an important one for all ages. As Yoda would say, "Smart we all are, in our own way." The "plot" is weak. When would we ever see a "brain" walking in the rain looking for his head? My 5-year-old great niece will surely say, "That makes no sense." But, the message makes sense and the lesson is a powerful one: "No brain is the same, no brain is the best, / Each brain finds its own special way." Being smart cannot always be measured by a test, and we must play to find our brain's way. In too many homes, watching TV and videos consumes active play time. In our schools today, recess is being taken away to make more time for tutoring and testing. This story reminds parents and teachers about the importance of play as learning. Parents and educators need to hear Dr. Hallowell's message and make changes at home and in school that promote our kids' physical, mental, and intellectual development. The discussion guide at the end makes suggestions for doing so.

            Book Description

Southern cooking used to be an expression of art and love, according to Martha Stamps, but sometime in the middle of the twentieth century an "abomination of honest Southern cooking" took place. As women joined the work force in ever-increasing numbers, their lives became so full that eating became an inconvenience and cooking a chore. "Casserole Cuisine"-just add Velveeta and a can of cream of mushroom soup-pushed aside the traditional hearty, gutsy cuisine of the South.

Today homemakers are looking to get back in touch with the foods of character that previous generations took for granted. The cuisine in The New Southern Basics performs that role, reaching back to a generation that took the time to do things right and re-creating the basic southern foods in ways that accommodate the tastes and nutritional concerns of our own time. The author exalts the use of fresh ingredients and cooking from scratch, noting that this is more than a matter of style; it tastes better and is much more valuable nutritionally and economically.

"I have always loved the innate rythms of the kitchen," writes the author. "In shelling peas, cleaning greens, and kneading dough, a heartbeat is reflected in the slow dance of the seasons. I believe that our generation, especially in these hectic times, can find comfort in these natural rythms and cycles."

Great book for learning the basics of southern cooking. Recipes were easy to follow and delicious. Would definitely recommend.

2 out of 5 stars Proceed with caution..........2005-01-03

I have made some wonderful dishes from this book, but it contains its fair share of stinkers, as well. After having the misfortune of coming across several failed recipes, I've come to the conclusion that this must be the author's first attempt at transcribing recipes which she's been cooking from memory for years. This cookbook is riddled with errors and omissions -- it clearly has not been kitchen tested by the publisher. The cheese straws required additional butter, the oven baked pork chops don't tell you what to do with the flour mixture (it's for dredging the pork chops before browining), the Hoppin' John doesn't work with fresh blackeyed peas, even though it says it will (too much liquid), and the cranberry loaf just flat-out does not work (this was an expensive failure, as it contains two cups of walnuts). In addition, the book is also light on details such as pan sizes and exact cooking times.

That said, the maccaroni and cheese, greens with tomatoes, pumpkin bread, date nut cookies, white bread, cucumber sandwiches, and real french dressing were all successful and quite good.

This is a nice book to play with, but I wouldn't recommend cooking anything new for the first time when you're having company over. You also might want to cross-reference any recipes that catch your interest with recipes from other cookbooks or the internet just to be safe.

            5 out of 5 stars Martha's passion is evident.......2003-01-30

For a Northerner who can't cook (i.e. follow dirctions wellwhen cooking) and doesn't particularly like to cook, I LOVED this cookbook. Now you may be asking yourself why a self described non-cooking woman would by this book. It's very simple. I've eaten the wonderful food Martha Stamps cooks up at her restaurant at the Belle Meade Plantation. I'll also confess that initially I purchased the book just because I loved the tea punch and knew I'd never remember the recipe until I got home from Nashville.

What I found not only by eating at her restaurant but by actually reading the cookbook is that her passion for cooking is clearly evident. While the recipes can stand on their own, what
makes this cook book so special are the details about Martha and her family that accompany the recipes. It is clearly evident that cooking is not just a vocation for her but a passion. These recipes aren't just thrown together, they have a history to them.

Even if you buy this book for just one recipe - it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars The most used cookbook I own!.......2002-01-23

            This cookbook is wonderful!
I was looking for a cookbook that had the recipes that my Grandmothers, from Southern Illionis, would cook when I would visit every summer.

What you will find most amazing about this cookbook is that you will have many of the ingredients in your panty. (Even if it's not stocked with fancy foodstuff!)

My husband thinks the meatloaf recipe is simply the best and raves and raves about it! The cheese straws I made for a Thanksgiving were all devoured in one night! As did they love the pimento cheese. The beef stew is wonderful as is the pot roast, chicken and dumplings, chicken salad, and the maccaroni and cheese is great. I've made the beef stew. Oh my goodness, was it good! Oh and the recipe for Banana Nut Bread is the best I've ever made, per my neighbors, my doctor, his wife, and even my Mama. Forget about my kids, I make double and triple batches and it's gone within a few day! For a Christmas get together I made the fudge pie and bought peppermint ice cream.(I had been out all day and was so tired, it really is an easy dessert!) The men loved it even more than the kids!

If Mrs. Stamps ever reads these reviews: Please get another cookbook out with some "More Southern Basics".

When I use this cookbook I am always thinking about my Grandmothers. They loved their men and their children, grandchildren and great grand-children, and most of all they loved who they were - Women raising a family, being smart, yet furgal when it came to providing for those they loved. And so proud.

Can a cookbook evolve all this emotion?
Yes it can and it does.

            5 out of 5 stars comfort food.......2001-12-07

This is the kind of book that reads as much as a novel as it does a cookbook. With little anecdotes, rememberances, and stories accompanying almost every recipe, it is a delight to read and can be done so in one sitting. Being born and raised far from the South, some of the recipes sounded a little unusual to me, but no less intriguing. The recipes are easy to follow and often use ingredients that are already in the pantry or cupboards. So many of the recipes can be classified as "comfort food", as they are not only pleasing to the stomach but bring back those feelings of contentment so many people feel after a favorite meal. After trying Phelps-Stamps recipe for Scalloped Potatoes, I will never again make them from a boxed mix. Her recipe is just too easy and the result is too delicious to ever go back to its "convenience based" counterpart. And this is a sentiment I find myself discovering over and over as I try more recipes from the book. As a cookbook collector with over 100 books in my collection, "The New Southern Basics" cookbook is a favorite and one I find myself reaching for quite often.

              Product Description

Southern cooking was an act of art and love at one time, according to restaurateur Martha Stamps, but during the middle of the twentieth century an "abomination of honest southern cooking" took place. As women joined the workforce in ever-increasing numbers, their lives became so busy that eating became an inconvenience and cooking a chore. Anything that could make the job of feeding the family more convenient was hallowed. Instant meals, frozen foods, microwaves - these became the staples of "cooking," replacing the knowledge and techniques previously handed down from generation to generation. Casserole cuisine - "just add Velveeta and a can of cream of mushroom soup" - pushed aside the traditional hearty cuisine of the South.

Blessedly, a change is occurring throughout the nation and particularly in the South. Today's homemakers are looking to get back in touch with the foods and character that previous generations took for granted. The cuisine celebrated in The New New Southern Basics performs that role, reaching back to a generation that took the time to do things right and recreating the basic southern foods in ways that accommodate the tastes and nutritional concerns of our time. Martha Stamps exalts the use of fresh ingredients and cooking from scratch, noting that this is more than a matter of style; it tastes better and is much more valuable nutritionally and economically.

The first edition of this book, The New Southern Basics, was published to much critical acclaim in 1997. "This is the food that has found its way to the hottest restaurants in New York and Los Angeles, but which tastes even better at home," Stamps writes. This food is "worth taking a little time and giving a little effort, for your friends, your family, your own satisfaction."

                Book Description

A beautiful collection of private photographs and amusing commercial postcards from the turn of the last century that celebrate our love for man's best friend.

While visiting postcard fairs and browsing their collections, Libby Hall, author of Prince and Other Dogs I and II, found herself won over by these cards. Wildly sentimental images that in a modern light might seem over the top-a dog crying real tears while thinking of his master fighting on the front lines during World War I, an Edwardian tea party given for a child's favorite pet, a canine family toasting their uncle's good health-suggest a genuine love and respect for the animals that were beginning to become a fixture of the modern nuclear family. For both collectors and general readers, Postcard Dogs will charm and amuse you with its odd yet heartfelt portraits, capturing the excitement and possibility of a society on the brink of profound change.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Delightful read about Pugs.......2007-09-14

This book is a wonderful addition to my pug collection. There are echoes of my own pugs antics in every story the author presents and I have read myself into giggling fits, my pugs snorting, snoring and sleeping nearby.

As mentioned in a couple of earlier reviews, there are a couple of chapters that are a bit graphic and, yes, the one was "yucky". But that is exactly how the author intended to portray the whole incident since that was his reaction to the experience himself. It also conveyed his lack of experience in the breeding arena and his horror at certain practices, things I can indentify with myself. More importantly, at the top of each of those chapters he has a note stating that this particular chapter has graphic material in it not suitable for children.

He does repeat one story from his Pugs book (Hans Goes Swimming) which is one of the funniest stories I have ever read. I had my own scare with my pug one day when I took him to the dog park that borders Puget Sound. I don't find the repitition offensive, as mentioned in another review. For me it means that the story was so good it could afford to be told in two different places. As a writer myself, I understand how you sometimes need to recycle material. Also, not all readers of Pug Bus will be readers of his other books. There are thirty chapters in this book. I guess he can afford to repeat one story.

Mr. Maggitti is a satirist. If you do not like that style of humor you will probably not enjoy his writing style. I don't know why he would be criticized for talking about his personal life. Isn't describing your relationship with your pets one of the most personal things you can share with others? For me, Mr. Maggitti was neither self-indulgent nor inconsiderate of his reader.

I am glad that I added Pug Bus to my library and recommend it highly. But there are definitely chapters, or postcards, that are not for "children under thirteen or for adults who have a sense of propriety" as Maggitti himself states in the disclaimer at the top of chapter seven.

2 out of 5 stars not for kids.......2007-05-12

I completely agree with eph's review below. I would also like to add that this book is not for children. There is way too much information on artificially inseminating a pug. I'm all for openness and honestly dealing with sexual matters, but this was just plain "icky".

5 out of 5 stars A Selection of Charming Vignettes.......2005-08-05

Anyone who loves pugs cant help to be charmed by this book. I felt that I got to know each pug as I read through each chapter. If you own or have been around pugs as I have you will recognize many of the endearing traits and foibles that are present in this wonderful breed. Highly recommended.

                  1 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent.......2005-08-03

I was looking forward to this book because I still refer to and re-read Maggitti's small Barron's text, PUGS: A COMPLETE PET OWNER'S MANUAL for information and chuckles, as it is full of good information and fun anecdotes. This book was a huge disappointment. I was surprised at the lack of content that is actually about the adorable snorting creatures I love (and presumably anyone who buys the book loves). Much of the text (which is wrapped in a cheap looking package--did he self publish?) is self-indulgent and repetitive. He repeats anecdotes from the aforementioned pet owner's guide, and he even repeats the same stories within PUG BUS--does he think we're so slow we won't notice? It seems so, as much of the book is arrogant rambling about his "wild ways" and anti-social behavior. He attests that this is his last work before retiring; I attest he wrote one too many.

4 out of 5 stars Postcards that Pug owners can relate to.......2005-07-28

This book will be enjoyed by all dog owners, but particularly by those who own Pugs. Mr. Maggitti captures the playfullness, stubborness and endearing qualities of our furry Pug friends. The book is a compilation of stories about the authors' adventures as a Pug owner, which will have you rolling with laughter and nodding your head with understanding. I would highly reccommend reading "Postcards From the Pug Bus".

5 out of 5 stars The Frog Collectors Bible.......2006-09-20

Frog, Flies right off the Ground, The model company that started before Airfix and ended with its moulds being sold to the Soviet Union in the day's of the Cold War.
This book is not only a history of Frog but an interesting social history of Great Britain. An advert for Frog appears in the book stating that making models during the Blackout helped stop boredom !!
The early Penguins are covered as well as the flying models.
A tribute to Frog must be that the moulds are still be used to this day in Russia and still sold here.
This book is one that will be picked up again and again, I highly recommend this volume to anybody with more than a passing interest in Model Aircraft

This is just about the best model reference book that I know of. Even if you've never seen a Frog model aircraft or kit, it's written with such verve and enthusiasm that you'll want to start collecting them before you reach the end! This should be the model (if you'll excuse the pun) for anyone contemplating the production of a similar company history. Great illustrations and a very comprehensive reference section at the back. I paid the equivalent of $50 for my copy and it is worth every cent.

                                    Book Description

Gardening is now the favorite outdoor leisure activity in America. Homeowners realize the health benefits available from gardening and the potential increase in their home's property value.

Regional gardening titles offer the most useful advice because they provide credible information on the plants that perform best in specific states. Gardeners want information they can trust and use successfully in their own gardens.

The Texas Gardening Guide is converted to a full-color edition with updated plants and the latest information on Texas gardening trends. It is revised by Dale Groom, the popular author and co-author of two other Cool Springs Press titles on gardening in Texas.

                                      Book Description

With its ever-tightening integration with Adobe's full suite of creative products and its own increasingly sophisticated feature set, InDesign is winning legions of Quark and FrameMaker converts. If you’re among them–or if you've decided to sidestep those programs altogether–you need this book. In these pages, the Adobe Creative Team uses a series of project-based lessons to provide a thorough grounding in the InDesign school of page design. You'll find step-by-step lessons in InDesign CS2 fundamentals plus plenty of the advanced tips and techniques you need to take your page designs to the next level. The workbook-style format includes self-paced lessons followed by review questions to reinforce the knowledge and a CD with all of the files required to complete the book's projects. Throughout, special focus is given to the features new to InDesign CS: the new Adobe Bridge file browser; object styles, snippets, smarter text handling, the ability to hide or show layers in Photoshop and PDF files, and much more.

                                      4 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-05-09

I am a convert from PageMaker, so I was already familiar with a lot of the functions in InDesign. However, the book has still been very beneficial. The examples and already finished or almost finished documents that come on the disc are great tools to learn with.

The book is easy to read, despite being written by Adobe. Sometimes the only way to learn is to buy a book written by a third party, but I've found that is not the case here. Adobe did a great job.

1 out of 5 stars What about CS3?.......2007-04-21

I'm only giving it 1 star because CS3 has now been released, so the book is of modest value except for those who wish not to take advantage of the new and improved. Try taking this one to a used book store and you'll see that at "1" it's over-rated.

Aside from that, this is an excellent series of manuals, particular valuable as software publishers no longer include manuals! As they say at O'Reilly: "The book that should have been in the box."

An excellent way to learn the program in depth working from the CD and book simultaneously at your own pace. Money well spent.

This book is highly recommended. We are using it as our class room text book. I have version CS3 and still find the book very helpful (However I would probably buy the CS3 edition if I had a choice.) This book dives right in! You are doing magazine lay out with columns, flowing text, and graphics almost immediately. It assumes a basic comfort level with computers from the outset. I had been working with In Design for 3 months before I started working with this book. I find the book takes me far beyond what I was learning on my own. There is nothing like learning through doing exercises, and the exercises are well designed. Enjoy!!

This is not a comprehensive tutorial to InDesign CS but it is a thorough introduction. The lessons are thoughtfully arranged and build upon each other and do a good job of teaching the basics but the treatment is not thorough and neither is it comprehensive. There is still much to learn. The book is helped by the inclusion of a CD which contains the needed files to complete the exercises.

The big problem is that InDesign CS is such a complex program. It is not going to be taught simply and in short order. This book will familiarize anyone who wants to learn the program but much will be left to learn.

New software, especially something as daunting as InDesign, can often intimidate a user. 'Classroom in a Book' is amazingly easy to use and answers the vast majority of questions that typically arise when one is struggling to master something as complex as this Adobe program.

I highly recommend this book as a step-by-step means to achieving an amazing degree of competence in formatting documents of any length and complexity.

The book will teach you how to use Adobe Indesign, but it's a little tedious. You certainly have to have patience when dealing with this book.

If you're looking for thorough, at-home training in any Adobe application, the Classroom in a Book series is a good choice. Slow, deliberate pacing is a hallmark of these well-written books. Readers work through a wide variety of projects using professional-quality graphics and fonts (supplied on a companion CD-ROM). Rather than the personal "avoid-the-mistakes-I-made" quality of many how-tos, the series employs a more serious tone befitting books that are recognized as part of the official Adobe certification training.

Readers begin with a Quick Tour tutorial that briefly covers all of the basics--working with tools and palettes, placing graphics and text. It's a great first dip in the water for those coming from QuarkXPress. From there, the lessons focus in more depth on specific areas: the work environment, setting up a new document with master pages, working with colors and gradients, importing and linking graphics, drawing with vectors, adjusting typography and editing text, creating tables, working with XML, exporting to PDF, color management, and much more. The lessons work best when followed sequentially; each includes many smaller tips that become helpful in later lessons. Sidebars feature handy information from the user's guide. (Although a trial version of the application does not come on the CD-ROM, it's available for download at Adobe.com.)

It's the Photoshop- and Illustrator-type features within InDesign that make it so much more fun to use than rival Quark. This book shows you how to do cool things with transparencies, blending modes, feathered edges, and drop shadows, a lot of which is new to version 2.0. There are also exercises that cover less wow-inducing (but just as time-saving) tools for creating indexes and making tables.

Frequent illustrations and screen shots help readers monitor their progress. Chapter summaries and review questions let beginners test their confidence in the material before moving on, and allow experienced users to skip material they already know.

The book has a few minor errors, a couple of which might just be platform related. Despite these, Adobe InDesign 2.0 Classroom in a Book is the best way to learn a powerful application that makes print design a breeze. --Angelynn Grant

Since storming onto the PGA Tour in 1996 and winning the Masters in 1997, Tiger Woods has topped golf's leader boards in most of the important categories, including ink. No golfer--indeed, no athlete, except maybe Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali--has been the subject of so many words in such a short time. In Raising the Bar, Tim Rosaforte adds to the flow, focusing on how Woods rebuilt himself and his game after the 1997 Masters and the slump of 1998. What's happened since, of course, is history.

And Rosaforte is there for every part of it. The conquests. The struggles. The endorsements, the contracts, the commercials. Tigermania. The horrible performance in the 1997 Ryder Cup matches. The doubts. The questions. The reassessment and reformulation of his game under the guidance of Butch Harmon. The weightlifting and fitness routine. The streak. The majors. The Grand Slam. It's a riveting triumph of will and focus, hard work and raw talent.

If Woods's game raises the bar--and there's no doubt that it has--Rosaforte's chronicle can't quite match the standards set by his subject. Yes, the book is well reported and certainly readable, but it seems rushed, a recapitulation churned out to be timely, rather than an analysis of a phenomenon that might be timeless in itself. Perhaps it's just too soon to expect that in a book, but if Tiger can raise the bar on the course, there's no reason the scribes who have him in their sights can't raise it some, as well. --Jeff Silverman

There have been many biographies written about Tiger's life and early days with the PGA, but each ends with his triumphant victory in the 1997 Masters Championship. In the last few years Tiger has endured a lifetime of experiences, including his growing pains, his perceived slump in 1998, his incredible winning streak from 1999--2000, culminating in his career grand slam. Critically acclaimed golf writer and commentator Tim Rosaforte has watched Tiger since he burst onto the golfing scene and been an up-close observer of the Tiger's life both on and off the course. Totally revised and updated, Raising the Bar includes Tiger's latest victories-including his historic 2001 Masters victory that completed the Tiger slam-and provides intense insight into his amazing career.

                                      4 out of 5 stars Tiger Woods.......2003-01-08

Rising The Bar is a book about a famous golfer named Tiger Woods by Tom Rosaforte. This book follows Tiger as he makes his professional golf career. Tiger was 2 when he started picking up the game of golf. He would watch his father when he would go golfing. When Tiger was 12 he won his first state golf tournament and by the time he was 19 he was in the Junior PGA (professional golf association). By the time Tiger reached the age of 23 he won his first professional golf title.

This book is a very easy book to read, even though it's a big book. Tim uses very easy words to understand. This book follows Tiger through every championship starting from his first one.

I would recommend this book to people who like sports and seeing people do well even though they weren't expected too. I'm the kind of person that likes books that shows how good people do coming from a not so good background. I give this book *** because if follows every detail of Tiger starting when he was a kid.

I enjoyed the book simply because I enjoy reading just about anything about Tiger. That said, I must say I was rather disapointed in this particular read. Not much original thought or insight to be found here. I was rather amused at the author's efforts to use every arcane and obscure golf term he could think of. He was a bit like a "name dropper" but in this case, he used "golf jargon" rather than celebrities. I also found I extremely difficult to follow the sequence of events. The chronology did not always work out. (I do wonder why publishers do not use editors anymore???? If I had one I certainly would not be misspelling so many words). Often times I found one event or one bit of information referred to differently, even in the same paragraph. All in all, I have read better.

                                      Boring. Boring. Boring.

I almost gave up on the book after about 30 pages, but it was given to me as a gift and I like to finish that which I start.

If this book had to be written (?) then it should have been written by someone who could at least hold your attention, if not excite.

Tim Rosaforte shows little writing talent and one wonders what he is doing to raise his own bar. His readers and Tiger deserve better.

Having read John Feinstein and having grown up with the writings of Jim Murray perhaps my bar is set too high.

To anyone who wants to take a chance on this book I recommend the public library.

2 out of 5 stars Even Tiger Junkies Will Be Disappointed.......2001-04-06

I have seen Tim Rosaforte on the Golf Channel and read an excerpt in Golf Digest so I was looking forward to this book. There were so many errors and typos--misspellings, wrong words, one whole section out of place--that it was hard to concentrate on the text. Many of the quotes were simply taken from Golf Channel interviews and shows. There was little evidence of research. It was clear that this book was designed to make money by capitalizing on Tiger's celebrity and was rushed to print while we were still talking about the 2000 season. Do publishers have editors and proofreaders any more? Save your money.

I was genuinely distracted from the content as I found myself reading every page "looking for more typos, inaccurate facts, etc". Many are noted in previous reviews....Butch Harmon is referred to as Bruce....David Duval is later called Davis....etc. I do not know the publishing process but I would think an author should have a vested interested in proofing his product....as well as many others. It is obviously an effort to cash in (the book itself had interesting facts, if you can trust themmmmm)......but also seemed disjointed and like it was slapped together without connection between chapters....bottom line - an inferior quality product given it is a 24 dollar hardcopy new book......wait for the next revision......
