5 out of 5 stars Great Gladys.......2001-10-16

This is one of Mitchell's best, I think, combining what appear to be two of her favourite themes, children and weirdness. I'm only sorry she didn't throw in a few nuns, too, which would have enhanced the weirdness factor almost to the point it reached in _St. Peter's Finger_. This novel never ceased to intrigue and fascinate me, and it has one of her ghastlier and more surprising denouments, as well. Well worth an evening's read.

5 out of 5 stars A Mitchell Classic.......2000-05-02

Both Philip Larkin and Patricia Craig considered this to be one of the best Gladys Mitchells, dealing as it does with old newspaper reports and a haunted house.

The supernatural elements come in from the beginning, when the reptilian psychologist (and witch?) Mrs. Bradley finds the diary of an acquitted murderess who later committed suicide in a pond - accused of pushing her cousin from the window of a haunted house.

The plot is one of Mitchell's best, involving one of the best uses of a haunted house in detective fiction (Mitchell uses the M. R. James approach), missing juvenile delinquents, an old woman choked to death on grated carrot. Mrs. Bradley untangles a convoluted maze of impersonation and insanity in her own inimicable fashion - "Mrs. Bradley is a far better detective than some who have achieved world-wide fame," said the Times Literary Supplement.

In short, one of Mitchell's best books, with a first-class setting, one of her best plots, and probably the nastiest murderer in the canon.

    5 out of 5 stars A rolicking, tongue-in-cheek fable.......2004-07-17

A Continent Adrift is a novel that features, of all unlikely protagonists, the Devil. After centuries of lying, cheating, and tricking humankind, and fathering numerous progeny... the Devil has come to question things as they are. Confronted by all too many humans who are becoming noticeably more evil than he is, the Devil finds himself at a moral crossroads beyond morality - yet when a meteroid storm threatens to destroy the Earth, the Devil seizes an opportunity save mankind. After all, if there were no Earth, then the Devil would be out of work! A rolicking, tongue-in-cheek fable of good, evil, and how easy the line between the two can blur, while ordinary human beings caught up in the mess strive to get by as best they can.

4 out of 5 stars A stimulating read for the Spiritually curious.......2004-07-04

Donald Donaldson, scientist has a mission to Antarctica. Donald has had many missions in his thousands of reincarnations on Earth with his soul mate Mya but always he is true to his own identity, Myron the Devil. Not the horned, cloven- footed monster we have experienced in legend but a living breathing human being with a modern day agenda. Save the Earth and humankind from a threatening meteoroid storm that could destroy Earth once and for all. Why would the Devil want to save mankind? Very simple- to save his job, his very purpose for being.

Author Vladimir Chernozemsky uses the first person, giving the reader an almost eerie feeling that they are having a conversation with the Devil himself. The story unfolds as Donald plans his upcoming expedition with his son Peter. Current events make up the backbone of this intriguing novel with a peppering of historical events. We learn of many of Donald's past incarnations as we listen attentively to his story. The reader is mesmerized, almost hypnotized by the dialogue. The search for Atlantis could prove to be his undoing, we are drawn into the melodrama.

Donald begins to struggle with his own convictions. A fallen angel, sent to represent the darkness his burden begins to grow heavy. Throughout eternity man has needed the Devil to represent evil, the darker side of humanity. Has this been his purpose all along and does he indeed love humanity to such an extent that he too has sacrificed himself for us? We receive a greater understanding of the meaning of Light and Darkness from this extremely well written novel. It is a book that leaves the reader wondering and questioning is good--very good. A stimulating read for the spiritually curious!

What would Satan give to save the world?

Centuries ago an Archangel was caste out of heaven and destined to reside in the flames of hell for all of eternity. Stripped of his wings and taking up residence upon the planet's surface, Satan evolves and reincarnates himself as necessary to survive. For a period of time, he resided in Atlantis, the continent that now exists in a quasi-dimensional state drifting beneath the ocean. He leaves Atlantis and finds himself on the planet Earth. He lives through many historical moments from the tempting of Christ to a position working closely with Adolph Hitler to the search for Osama bin Laden. He fathers many children and is mostly unaware of what they have or will become.

The Earth is now threatened with annihilation caused by a shower of meteoroids that are heading towards the planet. Satan must lead a team into Atlantis, shift its position and therefore cause the position of the Earth to shift as well to avoid destruction. During this journey he questions what he has become and he begins to long for the wings that he lost so many centuries earlier. He professes his love for Christ and what he stood for and begins to accept the fact that he is becoming more "human". He considers himself to be the one assigned to do God's "dirty work" and realizes that he is a necessary entity.

This book is not only impressive in appearance, it also impressive as a medium to be used to ask the hard questions about the roots of good and evil. It is written in first person and the reader is privy to private emotions and random thoughts that convey the story quite well. Like the author we wonder what Satan's true motivations are. There are so many words written about God and Christ but little written about the origin of Satan and the purpose that he serves.

Could it be that Satan is simply a way to balance and regulate good and evil? Why was he caste out of heaven and does he long to return? Unfortunately, no one (that I know of) has the true and correct answer but the author spins a rather interesting tale laced with current events and bound by some historical facts and data. You will enjoy this read and your curiosity will lead you to the last page of this tale eager to find out the conclusion.

3 out of 5 stars classic and refreshing, a gripping story!.......2004-05-10

Time: The present. As everyone knows, the human race is on the verge of self-destruction. Our main character, Myron, is also the Devil. He is at least 50,000 years old and has been living on Earth since the Martians propogated it in the days of early evolution. Since that time he has been marauding in the guise of various men, fathering children (mostly sons) and manipulating world politics and human emotions to his own liking.

Now Earth is in the path of an obliterating meteoroid, and the Devil knows of a way to rescue it. The legendary lost continent of Atlantis must be discovered and brought to its original position in order to re-align the Earth's tilt and orbit. The Devil realizes that if the Earth is destroyed, he will unemployed, so he takes on the role of the nuclear sub mission commander. Much to his chagrin, Myron begins to let human feelings of compassion and affection get the better of him. The reader follows his very human-like moral struggle as he examines his past actions and his relationship to God.

A Continent Adrift is billed as a satirical novel, and the prolific Vladimir Chernozemsky leaves almost no major political figure of our time unmentioned. The story features fictitious accounts of Saddam Hussein, George W. Bush, Osama Bin Laden, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Secretary Colin Powell, Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, and many more. Chernozemsky tells us exactly what he thinks of the current world leaders, with an emphasis on US-Arab relations. Part religious fantasy, part science fiction, and part political satire, A Continent Adrift is an engaging read although difficult to follow at times. It is not always clear who is speaking the dialogue, and the constant flashback scenes can be confusing. Even so, the novel's themes are classic and refreshing, resulting in a gripping story!

          Book Description

With her popular career counseling sessions, motivational speeches, workshops, and television specials, Barbara Sher has become famous for her extraordinary ability to help people define and achieve their life goals. Now she tackles a problem that millions of people face today in a universe of infinite possibilities. Sher identifies someone she calls The Scannersomeone who frequently has a multiplicity of interests, but finds it hard to create a successful life he or she loves because their passions and abilities are taking them in so many different directions. Sher identifies 7 types of Scannersranging from the Serial Specialist (someone who learns all about one subject, only to get bored and need to move on to the next) to Sybil (a person with so many areas of interest, she cant finish a thing). Contrary to popular wisdom, Sher tells Scanners that theirs is a unique ability, not a liability. She also states that they must do everything they love, not zero in on one pursuit at the expense of all others. With dozens of powerful techniques Sher has developed to free people from goal paralysis, readers will stop thinking of themselves as dabblers or dilettantes, and find innovative ways to live lives of variety, challenge, and joy.

1 out of 5 stars Seems like twaddle to me.......2007-09-16

I bought this based on a recommendation given in a session designed to help employees prepare for retirement. I found the book very disappointing - most of what's in here falls under the heading of "well, DUH!" I found no great insights, and little of lasting value in this book.

5 out of 5 stars an inspiring explanation.......2007-08-24

Finally an explanation for my diverse interests. Very practical ideas for getting some of them done. Reading it felt like a wave of creativity washing over me.

5 out of 5 stars Permission to be excited by the possibilities.......2007-08-13

Along with most reviewers, I've been a Barbara Sher fan for years. As a person with changing interests as well as a career counselor, I know the difficulties people face who change jobs, careers, or passions. It looks like the rest of the world picks a direction, gets in line, and marches in step. Not so for the rest of us. Sher's strength is her ability to listen and reflect on the angst that we have felt. She encourages us to be who we are, yet take the steps we need to actually accomplish something. Maybe I'll dig out that three-fourths completed manuscript and (gulp) pick a deadline.

5 out of 5 stars A very hope inspiring book for people who cannot settle down.......2007-07-03

Because I am interested in so many things, this book naturally grabbed my attention. Barbara understands that "scanners" are not just losers or non-commital type but are people wired differently than others. They have great abilities that decades ago would have made them someone like Edison or DaVinci.
She differentiates the behaviour of the different types of scanners and then shares some helpful strategies and tools to make their lives more fulfilling and less guilty.
She gives some thoughtful advice about careers that allow scanners to be happy at work or at least at home after a day at the office.
I really enjoyed these ideas and intend to read this book through a second time.
Two things stand out. Her career ideas do not seem to help someone like me that is in a well paying job and with a family of 6 to support.
Also, after talking about how it is okay to move quickly between different interests, without much to show for it (in the traditional sense).
Barbara has a Epilogue section about how the scanner really should do a significant Project, and it might just take buckling down and pushing through it. This just seems so opposite from the rest of the book. But despite the last second twist, this is a book full of exciting possibilities.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Will Help People With Multiple Interests and Careers.......2007-05-12

Dear Friends: I have been a big fan of Barbara Sher's work since her first book on managing multiple interests and careers, "Wishcraft," came out. "Wishcraft" made a huge difference in my life. "Refuse to Choose!" picks up where "Wishcraft" left off, and offers additional thoughts on assembling all of your prized projects and careers into a framework where you can pursue them all.

I worked as a career counselor at one time, so I believe that I can give an informed opinion on books about managing multiple careers.

I'm a scanner -- a Sybil scanner, to use Sher's classification scheme -- and I had spent years futilely trying to "specialize" and being mocked for having multiple interests, and being admonished to "pick one or two."

"Refuse to Choose!" has been very helpful to me, as I am trying to organize my multiple interests, and my (at least) four careers into a framework where I can be creative in each career and special interest for the next twenty years.

I read the criticisms of the book with some puzzlement -- they seem to have been written mostly by people who favor specialization and suppressing some interests in favor of completing a few projects. It's like reading reviews of a book on wine tasting by people who don't drink at all.

I would urge interested readers to examine the sample text of the book that Amazon presents and see for yourselves what a helpful book it is. Don't be fooled by the deceptively simple language Sher uses -- many of her insights into "scanners" are quite profound.

I have given several copies of the book to friends who are also "scanners."

          Book Description

If there is one word to describe Japanese cuisine then it has to be "artistic" in its purest sense. No other cuisine is so in harmony with nature, reflecting the rhythm of the seasons. No other accords food such awesome respect. No other prepares it with such an eye to detail - color, texture, flavor, balance - each ingredient's roll perfectly defined in the final dish. In Japan they first feast with their eyes, then comes the aroma, then taste, the palate pleasure.

The secret to preparing Japanese cuisine at home is an understanding of the basic ingredients and of how a meal is composed; the culinary methods used are basically very simple.

We trust that this book will encourage people at home to be adventurous and start preparing and cooking Japanese food in their own kitchens, however, the most important requirement of all is a love of good food prepared and presented with a sense of harmony.

Takahasi's cookbook is great, tasty, and the food is to die for. If you've the means, that is. The sad thing about this cookbook is that there's alot of tasty stuff, and all the ingredients are hard to come by. Plus, if you've never made sushi before, you're in for a wild ride.
I only wish it came with a bamboo roll mat. My kitchen would be much cleaner that way.

5 out of 5 stars Quality book, hits all the key points.......2001-11-24

For 3+ years I have endavored to learn the finer
points of eating and making sushi, and to date my
skills have been derived from 3 books (Sushi Made
          Easy, Tsuda; Quick & Easy Sushi Cook Book, Tohyama;
The Book of Japanese Cooking, Kazuko), eating at
many sushi restaurants, and trial and error by making
sushi at home weekly to monthly.

I am now convinced that there is no single source for
all the things one would like to know about eating and/or
making sushi, but the book 'The Great Sushi and Sashimi
          Cookbook' comes very close.

Written by two sushi chefs trained in Japan, what impresses
me most about the book is the authors ability to cover the
topics of history, etiquette, ingredients, cuts and cutting,
techniques and types of sushi and sashimi in a minimal number
of pages, and yet achieve a depth and breadth of discussion
that I have not seen in other books. Next most impressive
is the quality of the photographs and paper upon which the
book is printed; coffee table book quality.

I would score 'Sushi Made Easy' and 'Quick & Easy Sushi
Cook Book' as 4s, but give this book a 5 for hitting all
          the key points.

The author also discusses house-training and obedience training plus preventing (and solving) behavior problems. General maintenance, including feeding the Border throughout his life, grooming and exercise, is carefully considered, as is the preventive healthcare of the breed. Dr. Lowell Ackerman, in a special guest chapter, discusses the vital health topics that concern owners, including the selection of a qualified veterinarian, parasite control, vaccinations, infectious diseases and more. For every owner of this fun, active terrier, this new colorful guide promises to be an invaluable resource for years to come.

This book was one of the best books I have come across for dogs and border terriers combined. I was very imformative on all subjects (History, Characteristics, Breed Standard,Puppy Infomation, Training, Health Care, Senior Infomation, Showing, and Behavior). I do however advise this for singularly Border Terrier owners simply because all of the training tips, feeding tips, history and breed standard are all for this breed in particular. All of the infomation is clear and understandable. There are color photos through out (and that was something I was looking for!) and it was generally a wonderful read. It showed how to groom your border and clean him up each week. I advise ANYONE looking for a book on borders buy this straight away! It is a life long, practical, and highly comprehendable book for all ages.

          Book Description

Patricia Bennett Hoffman was, for many years, the AKC Gazette's principle Book Reviewer. David Kline is a long time luminary in Border Terriers. Their original work builds upon the breed's rising popularity in America by tracing the development of the breed in England and its importation into this country. Well written and detailed with chapters on structure, movement, breeding, and singling out the top dogs and their breeders for particular acclaim.

This book is more about showing the border terrier, and I was looking more for a book with general information about the breed.

5 out of 5 stars Simple book on Border Terriers (BT)............2003-07-05

This is a great starter book for pet owners of Border Terriers. Actually it is the only one I've been able to find which is strange given how popular they are in the movies and television. I currently have a wonderful Border Terrier. I purchased this book after stumbling across it at the book store after a year owning my BT. Given my year of experience, I can say that author was right on the money about this breed. The author covers many pratical aspects of the breed and puts it out there for the reader without boring you with too much needless information. If you planning on adding a BT to your family, this book will point you in the right direction.

This book is a fantastic introduction for anyone new to the breed or considering the breed. It gives information about the history of the breed but gives information about border personalities and issues

5 out of 5 stars A Grrreat book for anyone interested in Border Terriers.......2000-07-25

This book is well written, and includes every aspet of Border Terrier Ownership. Vertie doesn't recomend borders to everyone (witch I have seen many books do) and she puts a major emphisis on not buying any dog on whim. There is also interesting facts and stories about the breed. Did you know that Border Terriers where James Herriot's favorite breed? This is an exelent book that I would recomend to anyone who has or wants anything to do with this breed!

                            Book Description

From his celebrated seaside garden, a beloved poet-in his one-hundredth year-speaks about life, poetry, and the kindred spirit in all living things.

Throughout his life Stanley Kunitz has been creating poetry and tending gardens. This book is the distillation of conversations—none previously published—that took place between 2002 and 2004. Beginning with the garden, that "work of the imagination," the explorations journey through personal recollections, the creative process, and the harmony of the life cycle. A bouquet of poems and a total of twenty-six full-color photographs accompany the various sections.

In the spring of 2003, Kunitz experienced a mysterious health crisis from which, miraculously, he emerged in what he called a "transformed state." During this period, his vision of the garden-constant source of solace and renewal-propelled him. The intimate, often witty conversations that followed this time are presented here in their entirety, as transcribed. Their central themes, circling mortality and regeneration, attest to Kunitz's ever-present sagacity and wit. "Immortality," he answers when asked. "It's not anything I'd lose sleep over." 26 color photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Against All Odds.......2003-07-09

Nevlynn Johnson understands that his very life is a gift from God, and in his book he shares with readers how, through the grace of God, he is alive today. Johnson was raised by his young mother, and spent much of his childhood in Michigan, in close proximity to his mother's family many of whom were dysfunctional. In addition, he lacked a close relationship with his father, and was tempted by the call of life on the streets. Still, he survived. His mother raised him with a strength that defied her own upbringing. She was raised by two alcoholic parents, yet she provided her own son with all the love and wisdom she had to give. As the story of Johnson's life progresses, we follow him throughout his school years, military life, marriage, parenthood, and most importantly, his journey to develop a relationship with God. Through his successes and failures, he honestly shares his experiences, while taking responsibility for his part and understanding but not denouncing others for theirs.

Johnson is a man with a story to tell, and he shares it candidly and openly to anyone who reads his book, FAITH, COURAGE, and WISDOM: A JOURNEY TO MANHOOD. I appreciated the manner in which Johnson took responsibility for his mistakes instead of blaming his difficult circumstances or others. This is a story that will touch the hearts of readers and truly serve as an inspiration to many.
