Good Read.......2007-06-18
This was a good book and held my attention even though I did not really like the ending. I would like to find out what happened to the characters. It was an interesting read and something that is going on everyday.
Keep up the good work!!!!!! Gloria never disappoints.
A good read.......2007-01-27
I thought this book was really good. It's really believable how someone is completely ashamed of their heritage. I finished this book in a few hours. Gloria Mallette is my favorite author and she never ceases to amaze me with her writing.
Excellent story not so great ending........2005-01-30
This was a great story, the plot development was wonderful and the twist at the end was really shocking, however I am only giving this story 3 stars because i thought I was shortchanged by the ending. I wish the author would have included Nancy's AKA DeAnn's reunion with her family and how they received her and their reactions to her news etc. That would have made this book worthy of 5 stars but still a great book nonetheless.
The past always come back to haunt..........2004-03-15
Ashamed of her bi-racial genetic make-up, Assistant D. A. Nancy Michaels, a.k.a. DeeAnn Taylor, has totally disowned her Black family members. The thought of being Black distresses Nancy so much that she moves far away from anyone who may even slightly remember her, changes her name and appearance, and decides to "pass" as a White woman. Nancy's secret is safe for several years, until one day she runs into her cousin Monica. That chance meeting sets off a string of events that prompts Nancy to resort to drastic measures to keep her secret safe and to protect everything she has worked so hard to achieve.
WHEN WE PRACTICE TO DECEIVE is an absolutely riveting novel. Gloria Mallette has penned a tale so compelling, the reader will find themselves anxiously flipping the pages, losing all track of time as they become totally caught up in the lives of each of the characters. Although I wished it had ended differently, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Kudos to the author for a wonderful debut novel!

Losing Everything.......2002-12-22
Nancy risked it all just to remain anonymous to her world, instead of facing the truth about herself. It's a perfect example of how people hide behind facades. Hers happened to be color. But even after all that, she still lost out in the end. And once more, what she feared, came to pass. I just loved how Gloria Mallette expressed it so well and I didn't even figure out the end. The book was worth reading.

A game that made RPG history... for its controversy.......2006-03-08
Here's a "could-have-been"... In the early 90's Gary Gygax (a creator of the original Dungeons & Dragons) teamed up with GDW to create an all-new RPG. The game was originally called Dangerous Dimensions (DD). Though this was changed early on, the damage was done. Rival company TSR claimed that the renamed Dangerous Journeys game infringed their D&D trademark, though the rules systems & backgrounds of the games have little in common. TSR sued. The issue was resolved out-of-court, with game production ceasing, and TSR acquiring the game.
The lawsuit was both costly and distracting for GDW, at a time when the RPG industry was beginning a contraction. GDW would stumble on for a few more years before ceasing operations in 1995. (Interestingly, TSR -- $30 million in debt -- was sold to Wizards of the Coast in 1997, a victim of poor management and market forces.)
Quality of production appears to be high, and the basic game is relatively simple. Much of the book is taken up with elective add-ons. It's a shame Mythus wasn't allowed to continue.

Mythus: The idiocy of TSR.......2000-06-15
My friend recently got out of the Marines and he brought with him the most wonderful role playing system I've ever encountered, and I've played alot of them. The way it approaches the use of skills is truly the most effective I've ever seen. The combat system, which runs off the skill system, works beautifully. It is a shame that TSR took this spectacular system away from the role playing populous, though how they won the lawsuit when the similarities to D&D are so few and far between still stupifies us all. I recently picked up Gary Gygax's new game, Lejendary Adventures, and while reading it, I keep thinking to myself, "It's almost Mythus, but Mythus did 'this' better." The only problem that any of us had with Mythus was the magic system, which is a bit unbalanced. Other that that, it is the pennacle of role playing games.
Great book. Great RPG system........1998-06-23
The Dangerous Dangerous -- Mythus game system is the best! The book is great and well worth its (orginal) price tag of $26. Although the system needs more playtesting (too many opportunities for unfair exploits) and the book needs better editing (errors in the data tables are worse than typo/grammer errors). Mythus & Dagerous Journeys is great..The best!. To bad T$R (AD&D) sued GDW for frivilous copyright issues. Now WOTC (Magic the Gatering) owns T$R and Mythus (through a buy-out) and hopefully they will debug and re-release Mythus.

Today, within the United States, a "doctor of naturopathy" (N.D.) or "doctor of naturopathic medicine" (N.M.D.) credential is available from four full-time schools of naturopathy and at least eight nonaccredited correspondence schools, of which seven maintain Web sites [A, B, C, D, E, F, G]. (One correspondence school, the Progressive Universal Life Church, offers a "Ph.D. in Naturopathy" for $250 plus "life experience with no coursework.)

Naturopathic Genius!.......2005-08-02
It seems that everyone in the world has an opinion on how to be healthy and how to eat right. I've read a lot of junk, and I'm happy to say that Valerie Saxion is right on the money. Why? Because I feel great, all the time. Sorry, very hokey, but very true. Her advice is really good, and shows meaningful ways on suppressing your appetite, eating healthier and finding the right supplements. She even included a directory of practicing naturopatic doctors in the United States. I'm thankful for this book, which uses Biblical examples on how the human body should work, and how to cleanse one's self of parasites, and other nasties. If you're serious about health, this book is a great start.

Many cookbooks offer quick-and-easy recipes, yet few that do deliver on taste. Gourmet Every Day is a happy exception. Based on Gourmet magazine's popular "Every Day" column, the book offers more than 200 recipes for food that's not only quick to prepare but good--light, savory fare that's compatible with millennial palates and busy schedules. And it accomplishes this without relying on convenience foods or make-in-advance component preparations. Dishes such as Roasted Mussels with Almonds and Garlic, Crispy Asian Chicken and Watercress Salad, and Grilled Strip Steaks with Olive-Oregano Relish exemplify the book's breezy yet savvy approach to quick cooking.
The book is also simple to use. An opening section featuring 20 one-dish dinners (about a month's worth of weeknight meals) presents a single recipe and an illustrative color photo spread. Prop the book up on a counter and away you go. Try Herbed Turkey Burgers or Spicy Soba Noodles with Broiled Eggplant, dishes that cooks can combine into meals as they choose. Low-calorie recipes aren't neglected, and the likes of Asparagus with Peperonata should please people watching their weight as well as the clock. With suggested-beverage notes by Gerald Asher, Gourmet's wine editor, and technique sidebars--Cooking and Handling Rice and Grains is a nice one--the book serves a true need as few others of its kind have. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
Pasta with store-bought sauce, a frozen something-or-other, take-out Chinese . . . Does this sound like a typical weeknight dinner? More than likely, your everday life is hectic and you don't have time to cook, let alone cook something gourmet. But what if you could make one quick recipe at the end of a long day that was absolutely delicious and served as a complete meal?
Gourmet Every Day offers what busy people like you need most--20 flavorful one-dish dinners that can be prepared in your own kitchen in minutes and more than 180 additional recipes to create your own speedy combinations.
Gourmet Every Day begins with a colorful collection of 20 one-dish dinners (a month's worth of weeknight meals) designed for cooking on the run. The format is simple: On every left-hand page is a full-color photograph of a meal-in-one; on the right is the corresponding recipe, in extra-large type. Simply peruse the section, choose dinner, and cook. No page-flipping, just concise instructions with a photo to guide you. An everyday wine se-lection from Gerald Asher, Gourmet's wine editor, complements each meal. As always, Gourmet's food editors keep seasonality in mind. On a chilly night, try saffron chicken and chickpea stew, or roasted mussels with almonds and garlic. When summer harvests are at their peak, there's shrimp and corn with basil, and smoked chicken and sugar snap pea salad with mint.
Ten chapters follow with hundreds of recipes to mix and match. Quick stove-top dishes, grills, soups, sandwiches and burgers, pastas and pizzas, vegetables, grains, green salads, even snacks and desserts--all can be made in 45 minutes or less and many can be made in 20 minutes! (Super-fast 20-minute recipes are marked with a icon. Many, like the Greek salad with tuna or the gazpacho with parsley pesto, require no cooking at all.) And if you are keeping an eye on your waistline, there are more than 50 leanerlighter dishes from which to choose (marked by the F icon). Who would guess that decadent-tasting white bean, tomato, and goat cheese pizza or orecchiette with sausage and marinara sauce might just fit into your diet after all? All this, plus more than 90 exquisite photographs and many behind-the-scenes tips from Gourmet's editors, make this a quick-and-easy cookbook unlike any other.
Why settle for less when you can prepare a fabulous homemade Gourmet meal in minutes?
Gourmet Every Day, an everyday must for busy people, truly lives up to its name.
Customer Reviews:
Yet another 'quick and easy meal' book. Better than average.......2006-08-09
'Gourmet Every Day' is 'Gourmet' magazine's entry into the '30 minute meal' / Rachael Ray domain of quick and easy cooking. This is not their first attempt, as they did a 'quick and easy entertaining' book a two or three years ago, which every reviewer correctly pointed out was neither quick nor easy. 'Gourmet' seems to have learned a few things with this book, as, at the very least, these recipes are all pretty easy (Quick depends on your level of kitchen skills).
While I have a lot of respect for Ms. Ray's style of recipe, I can appreciate that some people find her bubbly atypical style and frequent abbreviations and neologisms pretty annoying. This book is a remedy for those aggrivations.
Like Rachael, all these meals are done in one fell swoop. There is none of the planning ahead mode which is only a second best solution to being short on time. Unlike Rachael (although I suspect this is changing fast), these recipes are the product of a large professional recipe factory, with a corp of professional recipe testers, copy editors, and internal reviewers who make certain that anything upon which they put the 'Gourmet' imprimatur is worthy of the honor. In fact, most of the recipes come from the monthly column in 'Gourmet' dedicated to quick cooking, although a large number of recipes were done especially for this book.
I think it is no surprise that many of the recipes seem to speak with an Italian accent. The dish on the cover is an obviously Italian pasta salad with olives, basal, and tomatoes. In fact, it looks remarkably like my favorite Jamie Oliver pasta salad.
Thankfully, the book is organized by principle ingredient or style of dish, these being 'One Dish Dinners', 'Salads for Dinner', 'Stove Top Dishes', Grills, 'Soups', Sandwiches and Burgers', Pastas and Pizzas', Vegetables', 'Grains', Snacks', and 'Desserts'.
This is not an ideal organization, and if is further confused by listing the first two on a separate page from the other chapters in the Table of Contents. And, these first two sections are presented differently from the rest of the book, in that recipes in these sections are given with a full page picture.
This is mostly nitpicking, as I was genuinely pleased with almost all the recipes, and found almost all really quite easy, without selling out to using too much prepared ingredients. The pizza recipes are 'made at home' using store-bought pizza dough.
The only quibble I have with the ingredients is that every once in a while, I think the authors lost track of their audience and used obscure ingredients such as ramps. (Not only are ramps highly seasonal, many megamarts simply don't carry them, even if they could, as they loose money on them.)
And, since we are getting 200 good, true to their word recipes for under the common list price of $35, this is a worthy purchase, especially if you are not already fully stocked with Ms. Ray's publications.
Wonderfully Simple Recipes.......2003-09-15
Maximum taste and minimum prep time is what this book is all about! Beautifully illustrated - The photographs of dishes are great. I cooked a pasta recipe from this book using pasta, olive oil, garlic, capers and bread crumbs. It was delicious and took about 20 minutes to prepare. My husband couldn't stop raving about it! We love this book!
Great easy gourmet meals.......2000-10-11
When we recieved our book, my husband and I couldn't wait to get started. When we get home from long days at work, this book is ideal! The recipes are quick, simple and the dishes and complete, even including wine suggestions! The book is easy to follow with divisions such as grill, soup, pastas, salads and sandwiches and more. Highly recommended

A "must have".......2007-01-24
This book is a "must have" for any dog owner. It provides simple, yet thorough, explanations of behaviors, symptoms, diseases, etc. If you love your dog like I do, get this book!!
reference.......2007-01-05
A must for a dog owners - informative, a 'life-saver' when in need, and simply interesting just to read.
Essential for any dog owner (or would-be owner.).......2004-03-05
As man's best friend, dogs have had more than their share of books written about them. But in a world of throwaway pet guides comes "Caring for Your Dog," an exceptionally complete and beautifully put together book that should be mandatory reading for anyone who loves dogs, or even those merely considering purchasing one.
A classic Dorling Kindersley book, this is a well-bound, finely constructed book with thick pages, clear text, truly helpful sidebars, excellent photography, and intuitive layout of the info. DVM Bruce Fogle writes authoritatively on all aspects of dog care, particularly diseases, with technically accuracy that will not overwhelm laymen. There are even carefully constructed flowcharts for helping in diagnosing illness and attempting first aid.
The sheer breadth of info included in the 448 pages of this book is staggering, but despite this, the book is still readable and interesting for its own sake (apart from merely being a reference.) The section on choosing a dog is helpful for those looking to start out, comparing numerous breeds for their trainability, noise, size and suitability for children. There are training tips, breeding advice, nutrition information, and much more. The largest section in the book, by far, covers diseases and treatment. While it is definitely clinical in its approach, this section is essential for maintaining your dog's health and is quite helpful in pointing out how humans and dogs differ in the diseases they get and how owners need to think along these lines when their pet is not itself. Again, for first-time buyers, there is extensive sidebar coverage of the susceptibility of certain breeds to disease and genetic problems in purebreds. (After reading this book, for instance, I wonder why any first-time dog owner would want a German Shepherd due to the extreme range of illnesses this breed suffers.) Lastly, its recent publishing date makes the treatment info current in a time when medications and treatments change quickly.
In summary, even though too many books get awarded five stars, this book truly deserves the rating. A must for any dog owner or anyone considering the purchase of a dog. Your dog will love you for it.
Buy this even before choosing a breed!.......2003-08-27
I purchased this reference because I liked its detailed outlines of congenital diseases that affect certain purebred dogs. Having lost two cherished canine companions over the years because of cancer, I wanted to avoid the next time, if possible, breeds prone to such major illnesses. Thanks to this volume, such precaution is now possible. This is a work of major interest and value to serious owners or breeders of purebred dogs, but lay persons can learn much from Dr. Fogle's presentation as well.

This book has gotten rave reviews from non-Hartland collectors as well as all kinds of horse collectors, and they are well deserved! This is a book that can keep you happily absorbed for long periods of time and it's an essential reference for collectors. Hartland Horsemen is an excellent book, very professionally done, and I love it! Like someone else said, I can't wait until the Hartland horse book is done so I can buy it!
Review by a model horse collector.......2000-07-01
I love this book! I don't know what else the author could have included -- it is so complete. I especially like the fact that the book is broken into sections, i.e. the horses and riders, the standing gunfighters, the riders and the horses shown separately in other sections. I also enjoy the history section in the back, and the detailed written descriptions about the models and their variations. The quality of the color photos is superb and I would highly recommend this book to any Hartland collector. I can't wait till her book on the breed horses comes out!

Book Description
The infancy narratives of the gospels of Matthew and Luke appear as a magnificent mosaic of allusions not only to the Hebrew Bible but also to Buddhist and Hindu religious traditions. Professor Thundy argues that many details of the infancy gospels as well as the rest of the gospels can be clarified by the Buddhist and Hindu scriptures. In this sense, the gospels are Eastern religious texts. Buddha and Christ covers the following topics in order: methodology of study, priority of Indian texts vis-a-vis Christian gospels, parallels of the birth narratives of Buddha and Jesus, uniqueness of Indian parallels, the Gnostic context of the Christian gospels, and contacts between India and the West in antiquity. Multicultural studies such as this encourage ecumenism and mutual understanding in East-West dialogues as well as reinforcing the view that the gospels should be taken seriously as Eastern religious texts.

NOW IN PAPERBACK
This is the first monograph in English on the stunning series "One hundred and eight heroes of the Suikoden". "The Suikoden" is the Japanese adaptation of the 14th-century Chinese vernacular novel "Shuihu zhuan", which recounts the exploits of a group of brave and righteous rebels on Mount Liang. "The Suikoden" was enormously popular in Japan during the 19th century. It was Kuniyoshi’s initial designs for the single-sheet print series "The one hundred and eight heroes of the Suikoden (Tsûzoku Suikoden gôketsu hyakuhachinin no hitori)" -- in which the full-length portraits of the heroes are charged with a new sense of dynamism -- that spurred a "Suikoden" craze in Edo (present-day Tokyo). This publication reproduces the 74 known designs of the series in full color, each accompanied by an explanatory text. Many of the designs still inspire Japanese tattooists, and supplementary information on this subject is also included in the book.

Must have for afficionados!.......2006-03-21
The prints in this book are fantastic, large with great color reproduction. It also an excellent read for anyone interested in japanese woodblock printing. An all round excellent book.
vividly orgasmic in visual and poetic aspects.......2005-08-21
The cover even makes me kind of wonder. Its paperback although the pages are pretty durable. I like the little stories about each character. The pictures are breathtaking and beautiful.
the reissue of this oustanding book is cause for celebration.......2003-09-14
Of all the superb books published by Hotei on the subject of Japanese woodblock prints, Inge Klompmakers' "Of Brigands and Bravery: Kuniyoshi's Heroes of the Suikoden" is far and away my favorite. This reflects not only my enthusiasm for the 19th-century artist Kuniyoshi but also an appreciation of the rich symbolism embedded in his treatment of the "Suikoden" heroes.
The "Suikoden" (the term is the Japanese rendition of the original Chinese title of "Shuihu zhuan") is a epic Chinese novel that is known in English as both "The Water Margin" and "All Men are Brothers." The novel, which lionizes an outlaw band of 108 men who commit crimes on behalf of the common people, was first translated into Japanese in the late 18th century. In the 19th century, a reworking of the novel brought it to an even wider Japanese audience, and at this juncture a number of leading print artists--including Hokusai and Yoshitoshi--illustrated it. However, it is the treatment of the bandits by Kuniyoshi--who depicted 75 of the 108 heroes--which has enjoyed the most enduring popularity and influence.
In the original Chinese novel, six of the 108 bandits are described as tattooed. In Kuniyoshi's series, covering just 75 of the bandits, that number was expanded to 15, and Kuniyoshi's "Suikoden" series became the leading evolutionary influence on Japan's complex style of tattooing.
Recently the "Suikoden" has enjoyed a major renaissance of popularity. Kuniyoshi's prints are revered by the international tattooing community, and the novel itself has inspired a series of fantasy games. Beyond these considerations, it is worth examining Kuniyoshi's accomplishment within its historical context. In the late 19th century, the Japanese enjoyed increased access to literature from abroad, had an urbanized population that supported a vigorous publishing industry, and perfected the technology of woodblock printing. These three developments jointly produced an extraordinary marriage of text and art, a marriage that enriches us all today.
A must-have for any Kuniyoshi enthusiast.......2001-07-25
As you might know, Japan was closed off from the rest of the world for around 200 years (Up to 1868!). One of the few countries that kept up close economical ties with Japan throughout that time was Holland (Europe).
That is probably one explanation why in Holland you will find large collections of Japanese Art, and also why the University of Leiden (a city in Holland) has got a very good reputation world-wide for all Japanese-related studies.
The publishing company of this book, Hotei Publishing (www.hotei-publishing.com), is also based in Leiden and has over the past few years managed to create an excellent reputation for itself regarding Japan-related publications. I have about a dozen of their books, and can wholeheartedly recommend all of them.
My interest in Japanese woodblock prints started because of my love for traditional Japanese tattooing. Doing a little research on Japanese tattooing, one will eventually come across the great ukiyo-e Master Kuniyoshi, on whose prints most of the traditional tattoo designs are based.
If, like me, you want to delve deeper into the history of those designs: this book is a must-have. For the untrained eye it will at first be difficult to see the connections between the prints and the tattoos - but after a while you will understand better.
If, on the other hand, you are "only" interested in Kuniyoshi and/or his Suikoden prints: this book is also a must-have for you! The prints are re-produced in large size and full colour.
Besides, you get background information regarding the technique of woodblock prints, Kuniyoshi's life, his work, how the Suikoden prints came about, and a lot more.
If you would also like to see how some of those prints where "transferred" onto human skin, I can recommend the following books to you: 1. Takahiro Kitamura, "Bushido - Legacies Of The Japanese Tattoo", Schiffer Publishing, (over 200 photographs of works by one of today's greatest tattoo masters: Horiyoshi III). 2. Sandi Fellman, "The Japanese Tattoo", Abbeville Press.

Book Description
The Chens were classified as "national bourgeois" following the Communist takeover and endured the cataclysmic violence of the Cultural Revolution - separation, imprisonment, internal exile, and "re-education" in the "cadre schools" designed for ideological criminals. Come Watch the Sun Go Home powerfully evokes the viciousness and absurdity of a society in thrall to totalitarian hysteria.

China's life and Cultural Revolution.......2005-07-11
This book is a moving and important read! While the first 3rd of the book moves slow, with no real compeling story line, it provides incredible insight into the minutia of everyday life in China and the social, political, and cultural forces that influenced recent history there. Government control of property, freedom of speech, government deportations to work camps, and other humiliations, are stark reminders of the freedoms we need to protect in this country. In this country, with 100's of people currently being held, after 9/11, with no charges and no due process, and with the press being challenged in the courts, and propaganda routinely being spewed by our government, this book is a must read, and an important reminder of what is good in this country and what we must continually be vigilant to protect against.
