Lost interest after 50 pages or so..........2006-12-17
I haven't finished it. I expected a light, humorous mystery, but it was TOO light and fey for me. I wasn't interested in any of the ridiculous characters, and I haven't wanted to pick it back up and find out what happened to any of them. I like classic British mysteries by Christie, Marsh, and Tey and I like humorous mysteries like Mortimer's Rumpole of the Bailey, but Branch's style didn't do anything for me. It almost seemed like she was trying to be a slightly darker version of P.G. Wodehouse (who I love) but it didn't work, in my opinion.
In the unlikely event I finish the book, I'll post another review.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing!.......2003-11-23
This book was absolutely amazing! I bought it not expecting much but I received one of the greatest works of writing. I defiantly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy books.
Wonderful book.......1999-09-30
It's a wonderful book. I am surprised, like the people who wrote reviews below me, that the book is not very much noticed. My favorite character was Gizur.. and because of him, my only complaint of this book. If one reads the book, they'll understand. This is one of my all-time favorite books.. (my favorite series in all books that I've read is Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings) If you can find this book, and read it, you'll enjoy!
exceedingly brilliant.......1999-07-05
I have found this book exceedingly brilliant. The characters are rich in their own idiosyncrasies and persuasive humour. What I liked about the book was the detailed distinctions between the enemy and the heroes. At times fantasy writers are taken aaway a bit by their won cleverness and weave too intricate a taperstry more than the story warrants. I like the magical confrontations between Lorimer and the rest. What I particularly enjoyed was the battle with the fire jotun and Regin. It was in such beautiful detail i could feel my own facial hairs being signed! Added to an otherwise dire moment, humour was thrown in with precision. Who would expect bumbling Alfars to summon a comet to smash the jotuns?? Elizabth H Boyer will remain one of my favourite writers and i hope she continues the tradition of good fantasy. P.S. What truely amazes me is that most of her novels are stand-alone, yet they are cohesive to the rest of her genre.
A quirky, unique and refreshingly new take on fantasy.......1999-06-17
It is astonishing that this author has not received more acclaim than she has. The Elves and The Otterskin is a superbly written and unique book with a piquant sense of humor. All of the usual elements are here: heroes, swords of power, characters struggling towards great deeds, magic - the faithful will be happy. What makes the books so different - and thus refreshing to longtime devotees of the genre - is how well it is written, how well the characters in the book develop from being a rather fractious band of moronic elves into something rather more powerful, and how it stands the usual conventions of the genre on their heads - all done with a twinkle in its eye. This is decidedly a modern fable - the characters do not seem to have the the God-given assurance of an Aragorn or a Gandalf. Instead Ivarr, our clueless witches' assistant must stumble his way, with grit , determination, a little luck and some ridiculous companions, towards the rescuing of a famous sword from a horrible pit, the slaying of a legendary Dragon and the final defeat of an evil and powerful Necromancer. Comedy and seriousness are balanced beautifully into a tasty, light-hearted and very pleasing offering. Overall: a fabulous book - order it and keep it if you can still find it.
Unusual and fun to read.......1999-05-21
I picked this title up in a used bookstore on a whim, and it quickly became one of my favorites. It has a sense of humor that few fantasy novels have, and it's own, unusual setting (very Scandinavian, by the way). One of the few fantasy authors I've read who doesn't rip off Tolkien. I highly recommend this book, though it might not be for everyone. Check it out from a library first, if you can.

Impressed with Sinus Survival.......2007-09-18
My name is Chris Martin and I am the author of Having Nasal Surgery? Don't You Become An Empty Nose Victim! Having read a number of sinus self-help books in recent years, I must say I am very impressed with this one.
Dr. Ivker was the past present of the American Holistic Medical Association and it shows! That said, what I appreciate about Dr. Ivker's Sinus Survival book is the holistic treatment focus in it and the extensiveness with which he explores the treatments. Dr. Ivker goes into great depth regarding a number of different holistic treatments, be it nasal irrigation, candida or fungi treatments, vitamins and herbs. Like Sinus Survival and based on my own experiences, my book recommends that the very best approach to remediate sinusitis and allergies is to utilize a holistic approach. You cannot treat your sinuses any other way - or you miss an interdependent piece of the puzzle.
Antibiotic treatment cannot and should not be the sole focus for treating a sinus infection; you need to treat the whole body. I can tell you affirmatively that as an empty nose syndrome (ENS) sufferer - who also suffers from sinusitis and allergies - my nose is far worse if I do not exercise during the day. My nose and sinuses feel worse if my diet is off, if my sleep is poor, or if I do not irrigate my nose with pulsatile saline irrigation. I am grateful Dr. Ivker recommends nasal irrigation for healthy sinuses in preventative fashion, as I find that to be beneficial in my own situation. If I do not irrigate, I find myself much more susceptible to sinus infections. Pulsatile irrigation is literally like my lifeline for sleeping better and breathing somewhat better, too.
Like Dr. Ivker, my brother-in-law is a GP, and I will share this book with him. It is wonderful to see a GP promote a program that can treat the sinuses very effectively and offer so many helpful tips. Kudos, Dr. Ivker, for this tremendous book!
Stop suffering right now........2007-08-17
If you suffer from sinus woes, look no further, for this is the book. I'm not biased, an idiot, or short-sighted. I'm not buddies with the author. I've just been all over the map looking for sinus cures (like you?), and happen to know that this is it.
This book is, hands down, the best way to get over even the WORST sinusitis. OK, granted, its purchase is just the beginning of a journey. It is not a magic pill that you wad up and swallow. You'll have to read it and probably change your lifestyle (I'm talking dramatically), but this book holds all the information you need to get you on your feet again. I carry it around with me all the time, consulting it like a monk doth his bible. It is the best compendium of sinusitis information on the market.
I know you think your case is unique. That you've already tried everything. That you are worse off than everyone else, and that NOBODY could possible BEGIN to understand what you go through every day with your nose. Believe me, I was there. But, I promise you're not alone, and that there's a way to get better. This book and Dr. Ivker can help.
If you're suffering, do yourself a favor and just stop. Get this book, right now and start getting better.
Life changing.......2007-03-13
I followed the principles in this book. Fantastic. I suffered my whole life with progressively worse and worse sinus infections. If you suffer like I did, don't hesitate, get this book. You'll be doing yourself a favor.
Can you tell I really like this book!.......2006-09-23
"Sinus Survival: A Self-help Guide" by Robert Ivker (isbn: 1585420581) This `survival' book is amazing. (In contrast to "The Sinus Cure" by Debra Fulghum Bruce, which in my opinion, okay, I'll say it: "sucks"). I've owned both books for five+ years now. In short, the `survival' book gives me plenty of `knowledge meat' to work with, while the `cure' book didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. The `survival' book, on the other hand, I refer to every year, and learn (or relearn) more than I did before. Dr Ivker, is a sinusitis sufferer himself, went the extra hoops beyond MD to become DO and has many self-help options in here. He includes a thorough exploration of what EMT-physicians consider, and/or exams to possibly do, or surgeries, etc and why. True to his word, I've followed his steps and have become someone who regularly had two or more sinus infections every year, to someone who has been infection-free for five and counting. And for those earlier unfortunate times while suffering from one, I still gained immediate relief (beyond the antibiotics) from some specific steps he recommends. Can you tell I really like this book! Lol's
A Roadmap to Relief.......2005-02-17
I had suffered for years with sinus problems - taking antibiotics, losing time from work, feeling depressed and hopeless.
I adhered to the program and enjoyed a two-year remission from my sinus challenges. I fell "off the wagon" so to speak and am suffering again for the first time in years but I am dusting off my copy of Sinus Survival and following these steps once again.

Customer Reviews:
Food and CD.......2006-01-16
I love the music, but I haven't used the recipe book much. I wish there was a separate storage case for the CD so I could store it with my collection of music rather than with my cookbooks.
Mouth Watering Recipes and Heavenly Italian Music.......2005-03-30
This might be Sharon O'Connor's most complete dining experience, though for the music I prefer two other books by Sharon, the LIGHTHEARTED GOURMET, and ROCK N ROLL DINER, which has all those tracks from AMERICAN GRAFFITI and which I play whenever I find myself unable to visit Mel's Diner here in San Francisco.
If you are not familiar with the Menus and Music books, they are simplicity itself. On the one hand, a lavish cookbook with recipes taken from the finest restaurants in the world, and on the other, lovely music drawn from Sharon O'Connor's historic past as a musician and record producer. On the Italian CD, you get a very fun band playing background music for when you dig in to her recipes. My favorite dish here is a little something that melts in your mouth, called Faraona Arrosto con Fonduta. You won't believe you're eating something not too far removed from ordinary chicken parmesan.
But oh, the difference is delectable! If it's Rome, Naples or North Beach, Sharon O'Connor has been there, probably with Placido Domingo, the famed opera singer and a personal friend (of Sharon's, not mine). I wish!

Another enjoyable read........2005-03-23
I had just finished reading the first book "Stories of Dogs" , when I saw this one had been released. I enjoyed the first one so much, I had to get this one to add to my library.
It was every bit as enjoyable as the first and I fell in love with the puppy dog on the cover. I laughed, I cried, I understood the emotions of so many of those in the book.
It was a joy to read and it is a feel good book that any true dog lover, should treat (no pun intended) themselves to...I give it four paw, UP!

Customer Reviews:
Lays Out a Nice Michael Connelly Itinerary in L.A........2007-05-09
"Blue Neon Night," a limited edition DVD about author Michael Connelly's Los Angeles, was recently distributed free with purchase of his LA-set book, "The Narrows." The DVD can function as a handy introduction to the city, and lays out a nice Michael Connery itinerary. It hits many of the city's famous streets and spots, the freeways, Sunset Boulevard, Mulholland Drive, the downtrodden Los Angeles River, the lovely seaside town of Venice; the Bradbury Building, with its intensely intricate interior; the immense mural known as the Pope of Broadway, and Angels' Flight, a former tramway connecting Bunker Hill, once a fancy Victorian district, then a red-light district, now a high-gloss district, to the city.
Connelly loves his adopted home town, and is eloquent on the subject. He calls it a "sunny place for shady people." He says he writes about its dark side, but also wishes to celebrate it, and that he loves it best at night, when the city is most itself, and gives a good sense of the "random nature of the chaos and danger that lurk within." He's lucky to work in LA, he says; it gives him "a palette overflowing with paint of many colors," and he adds that he likes to "paint to the four corners of the canvas." He adds that LA continues to be a destination city (with a net ingrowth of migration), functioning as a big casino, to which many people are dream-drawn, though few achieve their dreams. That's what comes of building a gigantic city, based on false hopes and ideas, in the desert, without water, he says. The desert reclaims all. Urban tumbleweeds drift through the streets, predators hide behind the rocks.
Connelly also explains how he came to call his detective Harry Bosch, after the painter Hieronymus Bosch. The painter, he says, painted to all four corners of the canvas, and documented a conjured world of sin, pain, demons and darkness. Connelly is interested not only in how a cop works on a case, but how a case works on a cop. A good detective, he says, must be at home in the world, wherever the world is, and must be able to move fluidly through all layers of society; that, he says, is one reason people enjoy detective fiction, because it takes them places they could not otherwise go.
The video, in addition to Connelly, features William Petersen, star of television's "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," reading excerpts from Connelly's previous 14 books, and several interesting extras. It has an evocative, moody jazz score, written by George Cable and played by Frank Morgan. Connelly's thoughts about his craft are as absorbing as the video travelogue; it's worth getting this DVD if you can.

This book includes plants with tremendous potential in arid regions but that have never been used in Southwest landscapes before.
Includes: Trees, Shrubs, Groundcovers, Vines, Cacti, and Succulents and how to use them for: Privacy, Shade, Shelter, Climate control, Erosion control, and Beauty.
Contents: An A-to-Z guide to the landscape potential of more than 600 plants that thrive in dry regions. Each plant is listed in a chart format that includes: Scientific name(s) Common name(s) Description Landscape value (how to maximize the plants best qualities in your landscape) Sun, soil and water requirements Cold hardiness Growth rate and size Specific problems Full-color photos that illustrate the plant full grown, as well as special features, such as bloom or leaf close-ups, or the different growth stages of the plant Professional and amateur landscapers, landscape architects, new-home buyers, college and university students, serious gardeners, landscape design and horticulture students, staffs of nurseries, arboretums and botanical gardens will all benefit from owning a copy of Landscape Plants for Dry Regions.
Customer Reviews:
Even Landscapers use this one as a reference guide.......2007-03-25
This book is great, especially if you happen to have at least a little background in landscape. There are probably too many plants in this book and it is arranged alphbetically by Latin names, but the pictures and descriptions make this book a must have for gardeners and landscapers. It is probably most useful to those planting in the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico and Southern California (most of these plants won't be available outside these areas). Having a little knowledge to begin with will help you know which plants in the book are rare or generally unavailable. That being said, all of the best performing desert trees and shrubs, etc. are in this book. The book also gives descriptions of plants and how and where to use them (or where not to use them). In summary, this book will help you set up a desert oasis or pure desert landscape in your yard.
Landscape Plants for Dry Regions is a winner!.......2006-08-10
I own several desert landscaping and gardening books and this book is by far the best of the bunch. It is organized according to species alphabetically, which makes it easy to look up plants. It is comprehensive...I have never failed to find the specific plant, bush or tree I am researching. Plus, full color photographs of each plant make it easy to pick and choose for visual effect.
Great reference for beginners.......2002-05-03
We're building a new home in Arizona and this book has served as a wonderful guide to my husband and myself in the planning of our landscaping. The photos are clear and great examples of what the plants will look like. Plants are listed alphabetically by scientific name, but there's a handy cross-reference in the back to make it easier. The most helpful tool is under each plant's description where it clearly lists possible problems and maintenance needed. One thing I wish it did include are citrus trees, but I suppose they were left out because they are not native plants (but then again, I didn't think palms were either, and they are listed).
Best book for choosing plants.......2001-09-30
All plants discussed have a color photo right next to the text, and the text provides all key information in specific format. This makes it easy to compare plants, or find specific information about a plant you're interested in. The book goes into detail on different varieties also, e.g. there are color pictures and text on each of several varieties of mesquite - very helpful when you're trying to choose the right one for your landscape. A very few of the photos are poor quality, but any picture here is worth a thousand words. This is the only book I have seen for this climate (I live in Phoenix) that attempts to provide this volume of information with full color photos. Definitely worth the money.
One of the Best Dry Region Plant Guides.......2000-12-14
I bought this book because I wanted a landscape that is in harmony with the region in which I live. I also wanted to be as efficient as possible in using water to irrigate my plants. This book has been enormously helpful in accomplishing these goals - I also like the fact that it has allowed me to access information about new plant releases on the internet. This is a useful textbook of options and information for anyone who lives in a dry region and enjoys plants.

A portable art gallery for the digital age.......2001-09-16
As the price of digital technology has plummeted, its availability has become more democratized. The result has been an explosion of creativity, as more and more people find the powerful new tools of self-expression available to them. No medium has been as completely revolutionized by computer typography, in particular, than that of the small press. This book takes us through some examples of the most innovative work coming from periodicals in the past few years. Sometimes odd, but frequently brilliant, it is always exemplary of the tremendous freedom digital composition has given to the page designer. If you're in the business, chances you'll find stuff here to inspire you. If you just like art, you won't be disappointed, either.
[One side note: don't expect any step-by-step instructions on how to reproduce this art. Don't even expect much explanatory text with each plate. It's just a gallery. Even so, you can learn a lot just by looking at the approximately 220 full-color plates on offer here.]
Inspiration!.......2000-04-21
This book is great inspiration for any graphic designer. If I'm struggling for an idea, this is my muse. The art found in this book is primarily from page design (magazines, books) with very little web design. This is not a negative comment, just don't expect to see much web design. The medium is irrelevant; it's just great design.
This book is a must have..........2000-03-31
When I need great ideas and inspiration, I pick up this book! What a wonderful collection of thought provoking artwork. If you are an artist, this book is a must have...it is well worth the price and you'll find yourself pcking it up all the time. I see something new in it I didn't see before every time I open it.

What does the Lord require?.......2004-11-18
Rufus Burrow, Jr. is a professor of Christian ethics at my seminary. In his courses, as in this book, Burrow tries to impress upon others the importance of ethical prophecy, which he defines as having several elements: God's establishment of the universe on a moral foundation, God's motivation by love, God's expectation of justice and resistance to oppression - many of the themes that are constant in the so-called minor prophets of the Hebrew scripture. Micah's statement about `what does the Lord require' is a good summary in scripture of this kind of prophetic word; Burrow cautions that this is not works righteousness, but drawing from Bonhoeffer (a Lutheran who was naturally concerned about issues of works righteousness versus justification by grace) develops the idea of `righteous works'. Burrow explains the need for social prophets in terms of a universal call - while not all are called to be prophetic in the same way, certainly all are called to be prophetic in the face of injustice and degradation of other human beings.
David Walker, the primary subject of Burrow's text, is a witness to the gospel, a prophet in the tradition of the eighth century biblical prophets. Walker, a man of the early nineteenth century, drew from the failure of the white establishment, particularly the white Christian establishment, fuel for his prophetic passion. While Walker's anger at the situation of institutional oppression and degradation of slavery is palpable and explicit, it is not a hatred for hatred's sake. Burrow compares Walker to Malcolm X, stating that `he was less concerned about expressing hatred for whites than admonishing his people to love and regard one another with respect. Any hatred that Walker might have had for whites was in response to white hatred for and enslavement of his people.' Walker charged his people to resist with all their power the chains of their oppressors, seeing passive acceptance of their situation as something warranting the oppression that they get in return. Walker's words are very tough in this regard, stating his `Appeal' even that those who do not fight and resist `ought to be kept...in slavery, or in chain, to be butchered by his cruel enemies.' In a later chapter, Burrow develops Walker's call for black self-determination, including a section directly tying Malcolm X and David Walker together, highlighting twelve major points of similarity between their messages.
Walker's `Appeal' was a major document in the abolitionist/anti-slavery movement. Burrow analyses the `Appeal' for elements of ethical prophecy - it deals with concrete situations and calls for specific actions; the highlight of divine wrath involved in addressing injustice; the anger of Walker himself at the situation. However, like examples of true ethical prophecy, the `Appeal' includes as integral to its message a hope for the future, the call to repentance and correction, and the recognition that the God of compassion holds all people as sacred and worthy of dignity as creatures made in the image of God. `Ethical prophecy must be theocentric,' Burrow states, and this element of God as the centre is made apparent through Walker's deep religious convictions and understanding of the Bible. God's impartiality and recognition the worth of every human being is thoroughly biblical. That human beings belong to God alone, and not any earthly master, is a call both the slaves who passively accept their status as well as to the white community who oppresses.
Ethical prophetic action rarely comes without a cost. Burrow highlights the example of the Grimke sisters, Sarah and Angelina, who gave up their comfortable life in Charleston, South Carolina (indeed, were forbidden from ever returning home), speaking out against the injustice of slavery and the silence of Christian folk, including pastors, even to the point of being ostracized by their adopted Quaker community in the North who, while they were against slavery, still perpetuated racial discrimination in their own worship practices and lifestyles.
Perhaps the most important chapter of Burrow's book, from a practical standpoint, is the chapter on the relevance of ethical prophecy today. `Contemporary ministry is missing a necessary ingredient,' Burrow writes. `Without this ingredient, churches and their members do little more than "play church".' Burrow points out that this element has historically been present in African-American experience, but the call to do justice is often overshadowed by a more comfortable status quo in many congregations and denominations among the white-dominated mainline churches. Burrow agrees with the liberation theological idea that God has a preferential option for the poor, and that to do justice in a prophetically ethical manner, one has to be `unashamedly partisan in favour of the socio-politically least of God's people.' Burrow states that preaching and teaching must not only include, but must emphasise the importance and value of all persons to God, and (in what is perhaps the most dis-comforting parts of the book), calls for well-meaning white persons and black pastors to repent of their sins.
Burrow's writing, while disquieting and challenging, is clear and direct. Good for scholars, students, pastors, and people in the pews, this is the kind of the book that should be read by most.
This book is part of the Mercer Press `Voices of the African Diaspora' series, a publishing project dedicated to preserving a relatively unknown and unstudied history.
