Book Description

The officer on duty at Bamford police station is skeptical when he takes a call from Guy Morgan. Morgan claims to have stumbled upon human bones in Stovey Woods in the heart of the Cotswalds, but surely animal bones are more likely? Morgan, though, is a doctor as well as a hiker, and he knows exactly what he's found.

It sends a shiver down Detective Alan Markby's spine when he hears the news. Twenty-two years ago, as a fresh-faced young inspector, he had a rare failure: His hunt for a brutal serial rapist preying on local women in the Stovey woods came up empty. After the third rape, the attacker disappeared, never to be heard of again.

Now, with a new investigation prompted by Morgan's grisly discovery, the trail could be warm once more. But almost at once Markby is confronted with another body and a thoroughly up-to-date murder. Markby's lover, Meredith Mitchell, can't help but wonder: Could the two be connected? But as both are about to find out, it seems that some of the village residents would be just as happy to let sleeping dogs lie and secrets-both old and new-stay hidden...

3 out of 5 stars Average Markby and Mitchell tale.......2004-08-17

The good news is that Ann Granger has written a lot of very good crime novels; the bad news is that this is not among the best of them. Meredith and Markby are futilely house-hunting when they enter the creepy village near the even creepier woods where Alan's first big career case went unsolved two decades past.

There is nothing cozy about the English village of Lower Stovey, and it is beyond the limits of credulity to think that the author intended to write a "delightful" book set there. The natives are generally dim, sleazy, secretive, oversexed or demented, or some combination of all three; and except for them the place is pretty much deserted all week because most of the nicer houses have been purchased by weekending yuppies.

First, old bones turn up in the woods. Then a fresh body turns up in the church and a middle-aged woman who came to live in the village reluctantly, is left stewing about the dark secrets in her past.

At least this time the exhaustively "independent" Meredith doesn't get into the obligatory "female in jeopardy" scene quite as crudely as in some of the novels. And I believe I know where this loving couple are finally going to find a house.

It's hard to maintain a quality series over time, especially one with an amateur sleuth. This is a 3-star effort - not a wasted read, but not the best of the series. Though certainly not the worst.

(And at least Meredith isn't red-haired and feisty as well as obsessively independent and pigheaded. I'm so sick of red-haired feisty amateur sleuths that I won't read past that description in a novel before putting it back on the shelf.)

5 out of 5 stars wonderful village cozy.......2002-12-21

Dr. Guy Morgan calls the Bamford police station to report he found human bones in the Cotswold Lower Stovey Woods. When Detective Superintendent Alan Markby on a house-hunting trip with his beloved Meredith Mitchell learns of the human remains, he thinks back to a haunting failure. As a rookie over two decades ago, he never caught The Potato Man, a serial rapist, who vanished, after his third rape.

Alan hopes that even after all this time has passed, a break has finally occurred. However, a new concern surfaces when another dead body is found, but this one is a recent corpse. As he digs deeper accompanied by his lover, the locals refuse to cooperate making their investigation that much harder and leaving the dedicated cop feeling déjà vu as he wonders if he will fail again.

The latest Mitchell and Markby novel is a delightful village mystery. The story line contains a strong who-done-it and an insightful look at a decaying hamlet especially the surly townsfolk and their detest of the new money brought in by outsiders. The two wonderful heroes augment the enjoyable plot, especially Alan's memories of that case that still disturbs him. Ann Granger provides her usual, a wonderful village cozy that is a treat for sub-genre fans.

3 out of 5 stars About Meredith and Alan.......2002-12-06

I used to love this series, but lately I find Meredith Mitchell, our commitment-phobic heroine, a little annoying. She calls herself independent, of course, and I'm all for the hard-to-get routine, but in her case it's getting a bit tedious. Alan Markby should really find someone else, or he'll turn into a complete wimp in the relationship area, always defensive and wondering. For quite some time now, I've wished for some serious competition for her, but in that I've been disappointed. OK, so now at long last she has agreed to marry him - in fact, she suggested it herself at the end of the last book - but somehow the fireworks are missing.
I realise this is not a romance story in the first place, but the Mitchell-Markby relationship does play an important part on the whole.
Also, in the first book - "Say it with poison" - which appeared in 1991 (I think), Meredith's age is given as 35, and now, in book 12, she is still only about 37 in the year 2000. Poetic licence? I checked all the books, and taking into account the seasons and other bits of information, she must be at least 39.
By the way: On page 10 of the paperback edition, it says: "... he heard a rumble of thunder. As he'd done when a child, Guy began to count in his head. One - two - three - four - The lightning burst across the sky ...". Perhaps it's different in Britain, but here on the Continent it's light before sound. :-)
On page 125 (still the paperback edition), an overbite is described as the lower jaw protruding further than the upper one - the exact opposite to what I thought from my experience and found in the Oxford dictionary. The author thanks some dentist for his help at the beginning of the book, which makes me wonder.
There are also quite a few spelling mistakes in this edition, which together with the inconsistencies mentioned above seem to indicate some rather negligent editing. Too bad!
Having said all this, I can still recommend this series to anyone who is interested in rural England and characters one can easily relate to. I'll certainly give the next volume a chance.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best "cozy"/police procedurals I've read all year.......2002-12-03

This is, I think, one of the better Alan Markby & Meredith Mitchell murder mysteries.

Detective Superintendent Alan Markby and his fiancee, Meredith Mitchell, are house hunting at Lower Stovey, when news of a grisly discovery at Stovey Woods filters through. Apparently a hiker had stumbled over some human bones. For Alan Markby however, the find and the woods bring to mind a case that he considers one of his more spectacular failures -- the case of a serial rapist, known as the Potato Man, who operated at Stovey Woods about 20 years ago, and who was never caught. Could the bones be the remains of the Potato Man? And was the reason why he suddenly stopped assaulting women be because he was killed all those years ago? These are the questions Markby that haunt Markby as he begins the investigation into discovering whose bones these could be. And then a church warden is found murdered in the church at Lower Stovey. And even as Markby initiates the investigation into this murder, he cannot help but wander if this new murder is connected in any way to the rapes at Stovey Woods all those years ago? Or if the two cases are totally unconnected? Unfortunately for Markby and his team, the villagers have their own fair share of secrets that they'd rather never saw the light of day, and they soon close ranks against the police. But Markby is determined that this time around (at least) he will get a result at Lower Stovey.

The previous reviewer hit nail on the head. This mystery novel was a completely enjoyable and engrossing read. And "A Restless Evil" turned out to be one of the best cozy/police procedurals that I've read all year. Ann Granger does a wonderfully job of skillfully guiding the reader through each new development, and each new development added a new dimension to this richly nuanced mystery novel, thus making this mystery in particular a truly brilliant read. The mystery unfolded smoothly and seamlessly, and Granger did a magnificent job of maintaining the level of tension throughout the book.

With the cooler and greyer weather, and shorter daylight hours, "A Restless Evil" is just the thing to curl up with one of these winter nights. Definitely a worthwhile read.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent book.......2002-11-27

The standard of her Mitchell and Markby books remains so consistently high that it surprises me. Each book has been interesting, enjoyable, well-written, with a good plot, and very different to preceeding books. This time around, human bones are found in Lower Stovey woods, and Alan Markby, charged with investigating the remains, considers the possibility that they may well have something to do with a serial rape case in the same area 22 years ago. A case which he investigated, and which he failed to solve. But then, he is brought smack bang into the present when an apparently motiveless killing of a local woman occurs in the village. And the detecting begins in earnest.

A really strong aspect of this series is the way that the relationship between Meredith and Alan has developed throughout it. It takes new turns with each book. It is what often makes the series stand out against second-rate claimants to the Queen of the Village crime novel (as Ann Granger surely is) Watching how it develops is really enjoyable, and it amazes me that AG is still able to keep it interesting after 14 books.

The plot is good, although the only flaw this book has it perhaps that there are not really enough viable suspects to allow us to guess, or the end to come as a shock. However, this is still a cracking book (i can only liken reading an Ann Granger book to reading an episode of Midsomer Murders) very exciting and interesting. It throws up questions, even in its blinkered spectrum of society, questions about people, the world we live in, religion (and its future) and so many other issues.

There is a strong cast of backing characters (one of her strongest yet) who are interesting and carry the plot along well. The writing is first-class, and Ann Granger's world tangs with reality.

This is a near-perfect example of everything a good classic english detective novel should be. If this is your thing, definitely comes highly reccomended.

5 out of 5 stars Sure to please the most discerning taste.......2004-11-15

This wonderful book is a collection nineteen short stories about wizards. And it has a broad range of authors, everyone from William Shakespeare and C.S. Lewis to Ursula Le Guin and E. Nesbit. Now, as you might have guessed, some of these "short stories" are actually extracted from larger works, but they are presented in a nice way, giving a feeling of completeness.

This book is a nice addition to the library of any fan of fantasy literature. I enjoyed the wide-ranging selection of authors, and found every one of the stories to be great, though my personal favorites were The Sixty-two Curses of Caliph Arenschadd by Patricia C. Wrede and The Three Wishes by Megan Whalen Turner.

So, let me just sum up by saying that this is a great anthology of wizard stories, one that is sure to please the most discerning taste. I highly recommend this book!

This book is what everything a kid goes through. They go through love, friendship problems, family problems and attitude a justment. Every kid should get this book because this book has the answers to your problems. No matter what situation, good or bad, this book does have the answers. This book shares a lot of problems a kid goes through and a lot of good times in their childhood. For me, i don't dislike the book, i really love it!
As I was growing up, I had a lot of problems. One of my problems was the fact that my bestfriend was moving. In this book, it says "But the more i thought about it, the more I realized I wasn't really losing her. The person taught me so much in life and laughter, the person who had helped me grow to be myself, was just going away for a while, to do some growing and learning up of her own." This quote is really true. The person who taught me so much is still here with me. I think that he just needs to keep learning. He was always there for and he made an impact in my life that no matter where he is, he is always going to be apart of me.
This book teaches a kid not to take things for granted. Lately, I been taking time for granted. Me and my brother has been really distance in the last few years. Me and him are seven years apart and we and him never really talked. In one short story in the family section it says " Hey Tova,It's me Sara. I just called to tell you I love you." This quote is a good quote. In this story, Tova is travaling to Egypt to study by herself. Her sister, Sara, is a few years younger then her. Sara wanted to be everything her sister is, so she copied everything she did. On the night Tova left, Sara noticed how quiet it is without her older sister so she cried all night. She then got the courage to call her and say I love you and she did. I wish that I could do this, so this short story gave me the courage too.
I have no favorite part in the book because everything in this book is really usefull in a kids life. This book covers every aspect in a kids life. Turning from a kid to a teenager, this book has it all. I advise every kid to read it because it's really handy when your in need.

    1 out of 5 stars Parents beware.......2005-11-22

I have not read this book, but my nine year old daughter has read and enjoyed most of it. Last night though, she cried herself to sleep after reading graphic stories (near the end of the book) by an incest victim whose father was sent to jail and the daughter of an injection drug user who woke up one night with police pointing guns at her. I'm sure the inclusion of these stories was well-intentioned, but there's no way they are "chicken soup" for the average kid's soul.

Another winner from Cooking Light! This cookbook contains all of the recipes from the 2001 magazines, and the front section highlights the editors' favorite recipes from the year. The first few pages offer pictures of these 5-star dishes and information on where those recipes can be found in the book. In my experience, the editors' picks are always the best recipes.

We've made lots of great dishes from this book, including an knock-out pasta with proscuitto and peas, a roasted corn and tomato tart, and the beef with rosemary mushroom sauce. One caveat - sometimes, Cooking Light portions tend to run on the small side. Keep an eye on this if you're counting calories or fat based on the nutritional information included with each recipe.

I'm a Cooking Light subscriber, and I make dishes featured in the magazines as they come out. Because I don't have the space to store tons of magazines, I transfer my recipe notes to the cookbook when it comes out at the end of the year. I end up with a cookbook full of tasty, heathly recipes that are enhanced by notes I've made about our personal preferences for each dish. Yum!

The Cooking Light website has this same book for only $31.46. I'm not sure why it is so much here. This is a great book because it allows you to keep one year's worth of magazine recipes in an organized way-no folded down corners and searching for that certain recipe. I would recommend it to anyone that is trying to keep their meals low in fat but with some taste left. Take a look and enjoy your cooking.

There is nothing like these recipes for healthy eating. I always check the nutrionial analysis because I can't believe the low calories and the small amount of fat in the recipes (and the food tastes great).

I have been a fan of Cooking Light magazine since 1996 and just started buying the cookbooks so I could throw away the magazines I've collected over the years.

      Excellent cookbook!

I absolutely love this book. I have always loved baking but was not very interested in cooking. This book changed the way I think about cooking. The recipes inspired me to be more conscious about eating healthier and encouraged me to try new things. The dishes include a variety of ingredients and if you follow the monthly chapters, you can select recipes which include ingredients that are in season. The best thing is the recipes aren't heavy and fattening, so you can use it every day. I pick 3-4 recipes each week and base my grocery shopping off the required ingredients. I can't say enough nice things about this cookbook and many of my friends have requested recipes based off the meals I have prepared for them.

If you ever wanted a complete guide to hawaiian invertebrates, this is the only option you should consider. I'm a diver and an aquarium keeper and this covers all the questions that I've come up with.

          5 out of 5 stars Incomparable!.......2004-07-12

Hawaii's Sea Creatures is the very best field guide to marine invertebrates ever published. There are an amazing number of species listings contained in this huge book. Jellyfish, crabs, shrimps, nudibranchs, shellfish, and dozens of others are covered here. A landlocked ocean lover will certainly appreciate the beautiful and colorful photos of marvelous creatures. The range that the guide covers seems to be much wider than Hawaii, covering the Micronesian area as well. The book's excellent detail and photographs keep the reader engrossed for a very long time. (Did this to me) Your very best buy would be the special hardback edition, which is newly updated and one of the best purchases here on Amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars This is Hawaii!.......2001-09-30

Hawaii isn`t just big waves or sunny beaches.
For a fish enthusiast,it is a heaven of beautifull animals.
And this book is very helpfull when knowing what animals that hides beneath the surface of the ocean.
Practically every habitat is invaded by creatures creeping, floating, crawling or swimming.
Over 500 species are identified here. Scientific & common names, natural history, size, cultural importance, ecology and suitability for aquariums - everything can be found here!
The habitats are also presented, before the ID section begins.
The book begins with a chapter about sponges, which are not as diverse here as in many other areas, but nevertheless, they are very colorfull. Then,we will see some jellyfish in the next chapter. My favourite is the white-spotted one. We also have Hawaii`s corals here. They are not well-known and not so colorfull as their relatives in the Indian Ocean, but it is good to know their names. The anemones are also quite anonymous, but very colorfull. After the huge coral chapter, the worms are presented, both the bristleworms and the nudibranch-like flatworms. The latter are the most beautifull creatures of the reef, with all of their colors, but not the cutest. The worm chapter is rather small, but the next chapter is covering the molluscs. They are very diverse, with more than 110 000 species worldwide. Both clams, shells, nudibranchs (=sea snails)and octopuses are presented here. The cowries are famous here, and I can`t understand why their shells are so famous - it is the living animals that covers the shell that are really amazing!Other shells included here are the venomous cone shells, the huge triton and many more. The nudibranchs should not be forgotten either. Their colors and shapes are endless in variations and beauty. Black, white, green, yellow, purple, pink - every color exists! They are even beating the fishes in beauty. The octopuses,of which only 8 species are presented, are rather similar to each other,so it`s not much to say about them. Then,I jump to the second of the book`s big chapters - about the Crustaceans. The crustaceans are my favourite invertebrates and therefore, this section is very interesting. Many rare species of reef crabs, lobsters, shrimps, mantis shrimps and unusually colorfull hermit crabs are presented here. My favorite is the rock lobster. The last chapter treats the echinoderms, which are highly developed although they lack head! The seastars, sea cucumbers, urchins and featherstars are included here.

After you`ve seen that chapter, the wonderfull book is over!
And it has been really great.
REMEMBER: This is just what I have told you!Now it`s your turn to dive in and get your own invertebrate knowledge!

          5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2000-09-09

I just returned from a vacation in Hawaii. I took this book, along with a reef fish book also by Mr. Hoover. While I highly recommend both books, the comprehensiveness and quality of this book make it a real standout. How Mr. Hoover managed to include photos and descriptive text of so many common reef invertebrates is amazing enough, but I was really impressed with how much fun this book was to read. I found myself taking it to dinner and reading (much to my wife's chagrin).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for the glass shoe collector........1999-04-02

This is the first of Ms. Yalom's books on glass shoes. This edition and its price list are small enough to put in your bag was antiquing or yard saleing. Pictures and descriptions are excellent. Descriptions give dimensions of shoes, markings, colors of glass produced and usually a bit of history as to when the shoe was made and by whom. I have both books by Ms. Yalom and refer to them when adding to my collection of nearly 200 different glass shoes! Price lists really help when you are questioning the asking price! The newer edition goes into shoes made of other materials (wood, metal, etc.) and features shoes made of china, porcelain, etc. Both books are great finds for the collector.

          Book Description

Although upkeep is labor intensive and often requires an arsenal of dangerous chemicals to keep it free of weeds and pests, the appeal of a manicured lawn is almost irresistible. But more people are discovering a very attractive alternative.

Packed with practical tips and beautiful photographs, Front Yard Gardens:

Liz Primeau transformed her lawn in a quiet suburb to a mixed garden with a profusion of flowering plants, shrubs, and cacti. She now enjoys an eye-catching front garden that requires no chemicals and less watering than her lawn.

This book includes overall planning and design, and outlines the steps for removing the grass, enriching the soil, and planting. The book is divided into several types of front yard gardens, including cottage, minimalist, secret, neighborhood, downtown, and natural. She discusses the key elements of each style, gives tips on how to create and maintain the garden, and provides a list of complementary plants.

With more than two hundred beautiful photographs taken expressly for this book by Andrew Leyerle, Front Yard Gardens is a sensual treasure-trove of ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Your Front Yard Can Be an Oasis.......2007-05-28

Liz Primeau has written an inspiring guide that can help you transform that bland patch of lawn between street and house into a rich landscape. Front Yard Gardens tells the stories in words and beautiful photographs of dozens of front gardens in various styles. The gardeners behind these wonderful front yards have coped with budget and space constraints, although most have dedicated considerable time and energy to their projects. Almost all of the gardens are Canadian, a plus for those of us who live in colder zones: many books about front yards emphasize styles that can only be achieved in milder areas like Southern California, where gardens remain lush year-round. Ms. Primeau's book is refreshing because it deals with the strategic and emotional challenges of introducing a front garden into a neighborhood where front lawns are the norm. The book also discusses the evolution of these gardens over time, encouraging the reader to simply start somewhere and implicitly acknowledging that for an enthusiastic gardener, the garden is never "done." Liz Primeau has given us a terrific book, although she has omitted photos of front gardens in winter and as part of streetscapes.

          5 out of 5 stars I Love this Book.......2007-05-16

I love this book. Two years ago I was inspired by this book to rid my yard of lawn. I had a designer design a cottage style garden for my front and back yard. It took my kids 2 months to dig up all the grass and then we started working on the design. We were novice gardners, so along with this book and about 12 others we have completed our yard.
My neighbors who are lawn lovers, have been very interested in our progress.
We wave and smile at everyone who pass as we work in the yard, and this seemed to ease some of the neighbors anxiety about our odd doings.
The kids are now 18, 15, 13, 12, and 6, so seeing the whole family working together has been a big plus.
So far we are still the only family in our subdivision with no lawn, but We get nice comments, and see more people gardening.
I am asthmatic so no lawn mower fumes are great, and this is a great "green " project for the whole family, and the kids are so proud of themselves, and the positive feedback they get.
This is a very expensive investment in time and plants but worth it.

5 out of 5 stars real yards, real houses, real people.......2004-04-11

So many gardening books focus on the high-end gardens of a few wealthy people. This book is practical, whimsical, and full of photographs and stories about real front-yard gardens. The owners have to contend with problems like streetlights, copycat neighbors, variances, etc., and many of them are redesigning and planting on a budget. This focus makes the book truly inspiring as well as useful. A great investment in getting rid of your boring lawn!

5 out of 5 stars No More Lawns!.......2003-12-31

Have you ever wondered why front yards in North America consist mainly of lawn? Is there a law that demands this? The writer starts by briefly reviewing the history of our love/hate affair with the front lawn and pointing out how costly they are in labour, water and poisonous chemicals.

The writer then explains how she changed her ordinary, lawn-filled front yard into a garden, working around the objections of her husband. From there she explains the groundwork that must be undertaken when a plain front yard is changed into a garden. Most of the remaining chapters discuss different types of gardens - cottage gardens, minimalist gardens, small city gardens and so on. The writer presents each topic and then introduces gardeners who have developed variations on this theme. The final chapter "Overcoming Obstacles" shows how gardeners have coped with dry soil, steep gardens, a garden that must incorporate a fire hydrant or a power pole and so on. There is a reasonable resource list at the end.

This is a really useful book for people who are tired of the front lawn but don't know quite what else to do with the space. The approach is relaxed and personal and has examples of gardens from Ontario to Texas. The advice is practical, the illustrations are relevant and show the gardens at different seasons. The writer knows her topic thoroughly and has given us a very readable and attractive garden book.

Suddenly, the universe of people making typographical decisions has expanded. Effective visual communication through the informed manipulation of the size and style of type, its placement on a two dimensional surface, its integration with graphic material, and the quality of its reproduction is within reach of anyone who has a computer. Typographic Communications Today places this phenomenon in historical perspective, covering the whole of 20th century graphic design.

With over 900 illustrations, more than 500 in color, it is an essential reference book for graphic artists and designers and for those who, regardless of profession are involved in design choices. It clarifies the options available in this new era of print while at the same time examining the new technologies in the context of art history. The numerous quotations by first rate designers make this a treasury of good thinking about the hows and whys of typographic design.

Types are displayed and grid systems employed as they are being discussed. Gottschall's lively commentary examines the many typographic solutions designers have evolved for communication problems, beginning with the creative solutions devised by artists, painters, architects, poets and concluding with the new opportunities and challenges posed by computers and laser technology

Several chapters focus on how these technologies have changed the ways typefaces are being designed and used. Gottschall explains how terminals, output devices, networks, scanners, and software have revolutionized the world of typesetting and given graphic designers a whole new set of tools, freedoms, and restrictions. The chapter "Bits, Bytes, and Typographic Design," for example, offers a state of the art review of keyboarding on terminals, image scanning, electronic filing, and networking. Not only does Gottschall discuss the role of personal computers and word processing software, he also reviews the packages and languages available from all of the major corporate players Apple, Xerox, Wang, IBM AT&T, Interleaf, and many others and evaluates the future of such possibilities as X-ray chip etching.

Edward M. Gottschall is Vice Chairman of International Typeface Corporation and Editor of U&lc magazine.

5 out of 5 stars Just your type.......2007-08-26

In the early eighties Aaron Burns, boss of the International Typeface Corporation suggested to Ed Gottschall the idea for this book. It was published in 1989 which will give you an idea of how long this monumental type study took to produce. To sum up twentieth century typography in one book would seem a project too far but I think Ed Gottschall has succeeded. He has managed to capture the typographic feel of Europe in the early years of the last century and then brought it up to date (least to the mid-eighties) with typography in America, Europe and the Far East. Incidentally the early years include the inputs of European fine arts and the Bauhaus.

The book is actually in three parts, the history of typographic design to Seventies then there is a long section dealing with actual typefaces and the beginnings of computer setting followed by the final section on typographic design from 1970. It is basically a visual book, handsomely designed by Mo Lebowitz, with hundreds of color and black and white illustrations. I think it is worth saying that this is not a design problem solving book in the practical sense but a stimulating history of type and how designers used letterforms to communicate ideas.

If you work in the creative design areas of print this book will certainly interest you. Incidentally it's worth searching around the web for some inexpensive copies of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book on the Graphics Arts.......1998-02-22

This book is a hodge-podge of graphic arts and typography. It has little bit of everything: modern and historical examples of the uses of typefaces in advertising, business and the graphic arts. It is published by the International Typeface Corporation and is printed on a very dense glossy paper by Nai Nippon Printing Co. Japan. The quality of the printing is suberb; the colors and details are stunning. It is expensive and worth every cent.

This treatise on modern visual communication provides an important in-depth focus on computer color graphics as they're applied to ads, brochures, and color presentations. From using the Web and developing materials for web publication to working with designers and understanding the commercial printing process, Computer Color Graphics is packed with ideas and insights into color graphics as a whole.

                  5 out of 5 stars A great overview of today's technology!.......2000-08-23

This book will be more than just a textbook for the students in my class, I expect it to be a constant reference source. Without getting overly technical Harry waldman is able to explain the concepts behind today's image and page development applications and processes. Adjunct Professor, Carnegie-Mellon University

5 out of 5 stars Color Graphics for Web Page Design.......2000-08-07

This is not a childrens' book, and I'm not 12. If I were to teach a course on 'Color Graphics for Web Page Design' I would probably use this book as a text. I wish I had read it before taking a course in Adobe Photoshop, where it is all too easy to get bogged down in programming detail.

Computer Color Graphics takes some essential matters like screen vs. paper, CYMK vs.RGB, vector vs. raster graphics and explains them clearly with good insight and good examples.

What the book is leading the reader towards is the design of web pages. Very sensibly there is a discussion of the ten or so major graphics and publishing programs.

This is a book that can be read profitably many times

5 out of 5 stars One Book Worth Buying.......2000-07-19

Tired of buying highly enigmatic technical books and realizing just how lost you actually are trying to master today's graphic software?

Well Harry Waldman has put an end to that all too familiar scene for computer newcomers and pros alike. In Computer Color Graphics, Waldman works as a personal mentor through this easy, fun, non-technical ride into the concepts that compose the world of digital color graphics.

Business professionals will love the book because it explores the concepts and tools with programs like QuarkXPress, Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe Illustrator, and many others. Waldman removes the mystery of digital imaging by breaking down the basics: dots and pixels, vector and raster graphics, CMYK and RGB, Web technology, and much more, into non-technical, easy to follow language.

New-comers will love this book because of its layman's terms and full color illustrations that expand comprehension. Computer Color Graphics unlocks the secrets of enhancing or manipulating photos like a pro, producing websites and newsletters, and giving dynamic presentations.

Imagine understanding the software used by designers and printers simply by reading this book. Becoming a part of today's world of color communications has never been so easy!

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Concise, useful instruction!.......2000-06-20

Industry leaders sometimes share their experience with the rest of us, but rarely is such a publication as welcome as this work. Waldman cuts to the chase, demystifying every major tool currently used by graphic designers, layout artists, web-authors, presenters and more! Each category contains a well edited overview that is sure to raise the skill level of novice and pro alike. The illustrations (tons of them!) are purposeful, well placed, and immediately demonstrate the concepts at hand. I've been in the graphics business for almost 3 decades, and can't imagine a more useful tool as a combination tutorial/reference source. With computer graphics spinning off into so many specialties, even a seasoned professional will find this a useful quick-start for tackling other segments of the industry.

You don't have to be in the business to make use of this. Family photos, community organization web-sites, newsletters, etc. can all be improved with tips in this book.

Credibility is on the author's side, since the Publisher is the GATF (Graphic Arts Technical Foundation) Press.

3 out of 5 stars Too bad this woman didn't "pass" permanently.......2005-02-15

Note the woman in this book. She had constant problems trying to be "black" because, when she was out with her children or a black boyfriend, the public saw (accurately) a Caucasian woman with Negroes. Her friend Artie Jones, a fellow mixed-white victimized by Jim Crow racial definitions, tells her that there is no "passing" or difference between "white" and "black." There is nothing she needs to know in order to be "white" - just be herself. Inez comes to realize that it is EASIER for her to be "white" because both "whites" and "blacks" (and everyone else) define people by racial phenotype unless told to do otherwise. Inez also comes to realize that white mulatto women like herself are often considered racial trophies by black men.

Inez comes to realize that, despite the propaganda that she is a "light-skinned black," the REAL blacks either hate or adore her for being so white. Inez has to hide in a car driven by a friend in order to escape the Watts race riot. After all, she is a WHITE and rioting black gangs will not stop to ask every white face if he or she has "black blood" (nor would they care).

Unfortunately, Inez got herself hooked up with a wife-beating black man and bore two of his children because she realized the possibilities before her. Too many girls like Inez are brought up to believe that so-called "pure" whites are gods and that she is unworthy of her European ancestry. The "passer" is the one who realizes that he or she is really "white" if ANYONE is and does not buy the racist nonsense that he/she is some better-looking or superior variety of "black" but unworthy of other whites.

                                5 out of 5 stars A compelling memoir of a unique life.......2004-09-15

I've never read anything else by Clarence Major but he does a splendid job of sharing his mother's compelling life as a light-skinned African-American in the days of segregation. Inez's voice is intimate but honest about what she had to do to survive an abusive husband while keeping her childen safe. Inez's eventual move to Chicago to make a better life for herself and her children is full of rich detail. It is during this time she passes herself off as white in order to get good jobs. Inez's unique perspective as a black woman living in a white world is well worth reading. I was also struck by her continuing goal to bring her children to Chicago and also improve her own life. It is a hard book to put down and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

                                5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2002-08-23

I read this book within a day, and I enjoyed it. Really. I used to feel contempt for those who passed for white, but in order for one to do better economically and have a more comfortable life, you had to do it. In this book, you have a woman born to a white father and black woman, who survives a difficult marriage and goes to Chicago to make a better life for her and her children. Read it and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Come By Here: My Mother's Life.......2002-04-15

This intimate look at race and its implications captured me the minute I opened this book. Clarence Major, the well-known poet, has written a beautiful and touching memoir on his mother's story. Although African American, Inez realized she could pass as a white woman with her light skin and was determined to not let Jim Crow laws hinder on her life. She embarks on a double identity in order to help her family. In the end, this sacrifice leads to self-discovery and offers readers an important look at racial challenges in our recent history.
