Book Description
Life on the Vineyard is good-maybe just too good--for ex-Boston cop J.W. Jackson this August. The bluefish are running early, and there's plenty of quality fishing time to be spent with his new baby son Joshua. But an idyllic summer hits a snag when a movie scout from a glamorous land called "Hollywood" invades the beaches--and takes a liking not only to the island locale, but to Jackson's lovely lady Zee as well. Worse still, a longtime nemesis turns up murdered just one day after he and J.W. come to blows, and Jackson is considered by nearly everyone, up-island and down, to be the most likely suspect. And if he hopes to spend the remainder of this season--as well as many others to come--enjoying simple family pleasures and fine, fresh seafood outside of a prison cell, J.W. will have to cast his line out and hook the real killer.

Craig is a pretty good, yet not well known writer.......2006-10-01
I was pleasantly surprised to stumble onto the Martha's Vineyard series and found my first reading (this book) to be breezy and fun. Our hero, J. W. along with his smart wife Zee and cute baby Joshua are islanders, amidst a visiting troop of actors and some environmentalists. J.W. makes enemies with the state's top environmentalist, and when he finds a dead body, the police put J.W. on top of the suspect list. So J.W. starts using his old police skills to do a little amateur detective work for his own good. Meanwhile, Hollywood seems to have discovered not only the island, but photogenic Zee. Actors and actresses arrive and make moves on both J.W. and Zee, but our heroes show resolve to be true to each other. This book was very good, and the mystery was engaging.
Making Movies Can Be Murder.......2006-04-06
The movies are finally coming to Martha's Vineyard, and many people in town are star struck. With trying out for "extras" in the movie, and saying goodbye to the last of the summer tourists, the last thing Martha's Vineyard needs is another murder. Does the murder of a local environmentalist have a connection to the film, or has Lawrence Ingalls made too many enemies amongst the locals? J.W. becomes involved once again in the murder when accusations fly about him having means, motive, and opportunity to kill his enemy. In the midst of dodging the affections of the star of the film, fishing, and watching Zee make the movie, J.W. brings a surprising end to this mystery.
I love this series! Even though others might criticize it for being an "easy" ready, I love curling up with Philip Craig's books and being transported to the sun and surf on Martha's Vineyard. With their love for food, fishing, and each other, J.W. and Zee are two people I would love to visit. And the recipes...well, they are delish. Enjoy!
I'm almost afraid to say "I liked it!".......2003-04-02
The reviews of this simple little book are all over the map. The comments about "too much Zee / Joshua" are fair and I agree with them. This edition had a lot less fishing too, thank you very much. The plot was easy to follow and you probably won't be "guessing" until the end. But this series is designed for summer reading - a time when your mind should be on autopilot. That means, it should be easy. also, it should be fun and it should be atmospheric. I think Mr. Craig knows that and he has hit on a decent formula that he can use (milk?) until he runs completely out of ideas. I'm reading the series now because it's April and it's still snowing here in the NE. I could use a little Vineyard summer right now and the series continues to bring me back to one of the most beautiful places in the USA. I'll keep reading if he keeps writing because I know what I'm getting.
One too many.......2000-06-13
Aside from milking Vineyard popularity in his rather dull series of mysteries, Craig does not fail to disappoint in this weakest of his offerings. Nothing much happens in this book, the murderer is fairly obvious, and Craig spoon-feeds us dribs and drabs of drama about as riveting as a bowl of mush. Cold mush. As one reviewer noted, there's just too much Zee adoration and Joshua junk. There is very little excitement. Like Martha's Vineyard after the tourists (finally!) go home. I gave this book two stars for the recipes that Craig thoughtfully includes with his stories. Now, if he would only publish his cookbook...
Another delightful story from the Vineyard.......1999-08-16
I have devoured each of Philip Craig's Vineyard mysteries with great enthusiasm, and this one was no exception. His folksy description of Vineyard life is as enjoyable as the story itself, as is his ongoing update of his character's family life. His writing is as refreshing as an offshore breeze, and I look forward to each new book with pleasure.
Book Description
It is just before World War II and Kasumi Kenshiro hides as a quiet, absent-minded professor teaching literature at a small women's college in Tokyo. Once the 62nd Grand Master of Kohuto Shinken, "God Fist of the North Star," and known as Yan Wang, or "the king of Death" who preserved the peace in the City of Devils, a fighter of thugs and drug dealers, Kasumi now seeks anonymity and a quiet life until the death of his lover, and former brothers, forces him to return to Shanghai to fulfill his destiny and avenge the deaths of his associates.
Book Description
Every year, millions of withdrawn little girls and chronically overwhelmed women go undiagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder because they don't fit the stereotypical profile: they’re not fast-talking, hyperactive, or inattentive, and they are not male. Sari Solden’s groundbreaking study reveals that ADD affects just as many women as men, and that the resulting depression, disorganization, anxiety, and underachievement are also symptoms of ADD. Newly revised and updated to reflect the latest clinical research, the book explores treatment and counseling options, and uses real-life case histories to examine the special challenges women with ADD and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) face, such as the shame of not fulfilling societal expectations. Included is a brand new chapter on friendship for women with ADHD. Three empowering steps — restructuring one's life, renegotiating relationships, and redefining self-image — help women take control of their lives and enjoy success on their own terms.

Women with Attention Deficit Disorder.......2007-09-27
I am 42 years old and was just diagnosed with ADD. After starting medication I was able to read - something I hadn't done in years. I voarciously poured through books on ADD.
As a woman with ADD Sari Solden's book was by far the best. Every page gave me an opportunity to see myself in a different light - making it possible to reframe my guilt and shame...
I had always believed myself to be different - now I know I am and can nuture the strengths of my differences and accomodate my challenges.
Thank you Sari - your book reminds me that my challenges will not disappear upon diagnosis or treatment - but that I need not allow them to define me.
Very Helpful.......2007-07-03
The author explains the disorder clearly and completely, providing very practical advice on how to deal with it.
Every woman should read it.......2007-05-16
I had no idea that girls and women with ADD were so different from boys and men. Very eye opening. It answered a lot of questions in my life...and in my child's life.
Women with ADD.......2007-04-02
Incredibly helpful, uncannily accurate and surprisingly thorough handbook of the profound effects of ADD in every aspect of the lives of affected women. Thoroughly explains how the primary cognitive dysfunction causes many secondary problems in relationships, self-esteem, achievement, and emotional reactivity. Goes on to offer practical and immediately useful information on many ways of dealing with the effects of the disorder to improve quality of life. Wish I'd read it a lot sooner! Would recommend highly to any woman with ADD and to all those who care about her.
Some parts were very helpful........2007-01-04
I didn't feel a strong connection to Sari Solden or her writing style. I felt much more in touch with the book "Delivered from Distraction". The first chapter (I think) of "Women with Attention Deficit Disorder" addresses the differences that young girls experience in school, as opposed to young boys. I felt that was the most helpful part of the book.
I read the book and gave it to a family member to read. I think it was a good book, but there were numerous gramatical errors, and I had a hard time becoming engrossed in the text. I felt that it didn't describe my ADHD experiences and personality as well as other books that I have read.
Book Description
Latin American cuisine has vaulted to the top of America's food scene in recent years, introducing a dazzling, seductive blend of South, Central, and North American cooking, christened Nuevo Latino. Award-winning chef Douglas Rodriguez pioneered the movement, first in Miami and then in New York at Patria and Chicama. The acclaimed chef's signature dishes are collected in his groundbreaking cookbook NUEVO LATINO, the book that set a thousand grills ablaze in backyards and restaurant kitchens across the country. The now-classic recipes celebrate and reinterpret a broad range of old-style dishes from Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, and other countries throughout Latin America. Such utterly unique creations as Grilled Flank Steak over Mushroom Ceviche, Sugarcane Tuna with Malanga Purée and Dried Shrimp Salsa, and Chocolate Tres Leches are a feast for the palate as well as the eye. This is the ultimate presentation of revolutionary cooking inspired by the sensational flavors of the Americas.

Tried two deserts.......2006-12-21
I made the Brazo Park Avenue and the chocolate flan and people went nutz for them! The Brazo takes time to make but on your first bite, you'll be hooked. I'm making it as for Christmas Eve.
Gets Your Mojo and Adobo Sizzlin'.......2002-06-07
Is this cool way of cookin?! I'm totally impressed by the style and excitement of this style of cuisine, full of marinades (adobo in Spanish, both dry rub and liquid), and that hot/cool tension of Latino food.
With tropical fruits and Latino veggies and tubers (malanga, yuca, etc) this introduces most of us to an exciting whole new venue of possibilities.
It's all here, drink suggestions and Breads (you've got to try the Yellow Arepas, they're worth the book itself). Amazing array of salsas and mojos, such as Ruby Grapefruit, Shallot and Cilantro Mojo (unblievable flavors).
The offerings here are spectacular, Grilled Flank Steak over Mushroom Ceviche. Who would have thought of that, ceviche applied to small button mushrooms which this guy found in Peruvia through his dad's barber.
Knockout dishes like Original Plantain Coated Mahimahi served with Tamarind Tartar Sauce. Avocado and Pistachio Crusted Gulf Snapper with Black Bean Sauce. Sugarcane Tuna with Malanga Puree and Dried Shrimp Salsa. Mango and Mustard-Glazed Salmon with Calamari Rice.
This review could continue to speak of creative dish after dish. Desserts are equally attractive, with fruit and flans and rice and a neat dish to dazzle your guests from Cuba, Brazo Park Avenue with Banana Mousse.
All nicely packaged by one of the best, Ten Speed Press, with class and style, color photos and rich, vibrant text.
My frontrunner for Latino cooking resource.
Exquisite flavors.......2000-08-11
Rodriguez is an excellent chef and a great cookbook writer. I bought this after eating a couple of meals in one of his newer restaurants in NYC, Chicama, where the creative ceviches, oyster appetizers and other dishes are absolutely out of this world. Combining unlikely flavors to create new versions of Latin American standards, this book contains many recipes you will want to make over and over. Only challenges: some ingredients are hard to find, and most of the recipes take a little extra preparation. Small price to pay for uncommonly good food.
Checked it out of the library, now I'm buying it!.......1998-01-07
We've just returned from a Caribbean cruise with its final destination in Costa Rica. We were inspired by the diversity of the flavors and food presentation everywhere we visited...so inspired we decided to come home and have a New Year's Latino brunch for friends and neighbors. So, our local library had Nuevo Latino on the shelf and we were on! Douglas Rodriguez' book is well written so that it tells an interesting story of his career journey, and it presents recipes, definitions of ingredients, and presentation ideas in a practical and easy-to-replicate way. Now, even the trips to the grocery store with all these new "foreign" foods in the produce section conjure up memories/ideas from the recipes he's presented. Can't wait to go to New York to experience Patria, but also know that what we made from his book was excellent. Our friends thought we were great cooks! And that's the point of cookbooks, isn't it! Thanks to Nuevo Latino.
Book Description
Go to any unpopulated or abandoned urban area, and you'll find them. Countless thousands of wild dogs-abandoned to disease, starvation, and inevitable death-are leading brutal lives in the no-man's-land between domestication and wildness. A lucky few are saved by dedicated rescuers, and Randy Grim, founder of Stray Rescue of St. Louis, has become one of the country's lead-ing dog saviors. In this book, journalist Melinda Roth narrates Grim's dramatic efforts and describes the horrific and heart-warm-ing cases he encounters, showing how this growing national health problem-controlled by no federal or local laws-can no longer be ignored. This edition includes a new afterword about Grim's rehabil-itation of Quentin, the dog who recently made national head-lines by miraculously surviving a gas chamber.

Amazing Story.......2007-04-17
Randy Grim is one of the most incredible people I have ever read about. His sacrifice of time, money and love during his attempt to save the most unwanted of the unwanted, America's abandoned street dogs, is totally amazing.
The stories are incredible and moving. You face the real drama of dogs living in fear of man yet, Randy Grim goes out on the lonely city streets and into abandoned buildings to reach every dog he can. He saved them from injury, starvation and death, not only during the day but at night as well.
This is a book everyone should read, everyone. Whether you love dogs or not, this book will make an impact on your life. You will do some real soul searching about the need for each one of us to help with this mission.
This is one amazing book!.......2006-07-17
Never has a book had such an impact on me. I am an avowed dog-lover, but with all the dog books I have read, I have never been so moved as I was by the story of Randy Grim and his fight to save stray dogs. I could not recommend this book strongly enough to anyone who cares about animals. Randy is an EXTRAORDINARY human being, and even though he does not want it, he is finally getting the recognition he deserves. And this recognition can only help the cause of his fight for stray animals. You go, Randy! I love you!
Should Serve as an Inspiration to Anyone who Loves Dogs.......2005-11-18
Wonderful book. A real eye opener as to the conditions of some urban areas. Only goes to show that you don't have to be volunteering at Ground Zero to be a hero.
The Dog Rescuer.......2005-08-21
Poignant and disturbing if a bit disjointed. More than talking to dogs, Randy Grim understands their needs and has at times puts himself in harm's way to rescue abandoned, feral dogs from warehouses, abandoned apartments and houses, and fields. He has turned his difficulty communicating with humans into a useful, compassionate, even obsessive need to save these dogs. The stories don't link together very well and I'd like more insight and history into Randy himself, but overall, the book leaves you feeling that you want to help, too.
good on more than one level.......2005-05-18
A good read because I had no clue what the stray/feral dog situation was like, other than the occassional statistic thrown out. I learned a lot about that situation, as well as what often goes on in the dog breeding industry and the pet stores. Worse than I could have imagined. I almost didn't read this book because I was afraid of becoming too sad about the whole stray dog situation, but I read it anyway because I have six dogs and various behavioral broblems. I wanted some insight. I figured that if this guy rescues and rehabilitates those with the worst behavioral and emotional problems, then I could definitely get some insight into my own dogs, all of which were unwanted. But I didn't want to start with the typical sterile information you find in dog training books. I feel that "The Man Who Talks to Dogs" gave me the insight I needed into understanding the behaviors I'm seeing in my own dogs. I have made a few changes in how I relate to them and things are becoming more harmonious. There is also good information on Randy's web site strayrescue.com.

Book Description
Authoritative, accessible, and engaging, here is a new reference from The New York Times, a comprehensive, nearly 700-page bible of all the garden news that's fit to print. Based on "Gardeners Q&A." the enormously popular syndicated column, 1000 Gardening Questions and Answers is like a passionate conversation between gardeners and gardening experts. Every week readers from around the country send in their most vexing problems--how to divide perennials, prune raspberry canes, grow basil that really tastes like basil, get rid of earwigs, find long-lost varieties of flowers, keep honeysuckle under control--and every week, the authorities at the Times write a column full of answers.
Carefully selected, updated, and expanded by Leslie Land, one of the column's two authors, here are 1,000 Q&As that add up to an informal encyclopedia of gardening knowledge. The book covers flowers, trees, shrubs, the lawn, vegetables, herbs, fruit, indoor plants, soil, pests, and troublemakers. It addresses problems and provides answers to difficulties in every North American zone. Hundreds of line drawings illustrate the book, providing botanical identification and demonstrating how-to gardening techniques. In addition, sidebars throughout supply supplemental information--"Dos and Don'ts of Deadheading," "Annuals that Beat the Heat," "To Prune or Not to Prune: The Clematis Question," "Air Layering," "Windowsill Bonsai"--plus quirky facts, trivia, lore, and myth. It's big, it's got heft, it's filled to the brim with information. And it's so lively, it reads like a novel--and belongs on every gardener's potting bench and bedside table.

The New York Times 1000 Gardening Questions and Answers: Based on the New York Times Column "Garden Q & A.".......2007-07-15
Great book for any gardener will help me a lot to have a beautiful and healthy garden.
Excellent Gardening Resource, high recommend.......2006-06-21
I love to cook, and I decided to try my hand at gardening to see if I could grow some of our food. Needless to say, I had no idea what I was doing. I found this book at Smith and Hawken and it and helped me to obtain reasonable results the first year. My garden now grows a little more each year. I turn to this book regularly, when I am planning on expanding my garden or troubleshooting.
The book is subdivided as follows:
1. The Flower Garden
2. The Landscape Garden
3. The Kitchen Garden
4. The Potted Garden
5. Garden Keeping
The Flower Garden deals with annuals, perennials, roses and bulbs. Plants that bloom in the spring, summer, fall and then fade back in the winter.
The Landscape Garden will answer questions about the bigger picture it covers: ground cover, lawns, shrubs, trees and vines. The chapter also covers path materials and garden design.
The Kitchen Garden provides information about fruits, vegetables and herbs.
The Potted Garden covers indoor and outdoor container gardening.
In Garden Keeping they cover soil, compost, mulch, fertility and disease and pest control.
The index in the back of this book is very well done. I have found answers to 95% of the questions that I had. The book is weak on organic gardening. If that topic is of special interest to you (as it is to me), I suggest you buy another book on that topic alone.
Overall, I have been pleased with the information available in this book. It has allowed me to grow a fabulous herb garden, and a nice vegetable garden. It has also provided me with enough information to keep a Meyer lemon tree alive and producing fruit for two years. I would recommend this book to anyone that that is interested in gardening.
Everything You Wanted to Know About Garddening in the NE.......2004-01-10
This is an easy to read, practical guide to everyday gardening questions, with lots of specifics, reference materials, and explanations. The index is massive, the research is thorough, and the subject matter will strike a chord with every true gardener. I highly recommend this book to help answer the mysteries that seem to crop up every year in a northeastern garden.
A title which lends to leisure browsing as much as reference.......2003-06-17
With its question/answer format and a blending of information gleaned from over a decade of New York Time's gardening column, The New York Times 1000 Gardening Questions And Answers: Based On The Column "Gardeners Q. & A" gathers the questions of avid gardeners and the experiences and advice of gardening professionals under one cover. Add a chatty tone to their answers, which goes into more than just a few lines of detail, and an organization by type of plant, and you have a title which lends to leisure browsing as much as reference.

old fashion.......2006-03-16
i did't like this book at all. The rooms that were displayed, looked very out dated. It wasn't very hopeful to me at all.
Great book if you are looking for 1 of the 8 themes shown........2005-09-15
This is a really great book if you are looking for 1 of the 8 themes that are shown. A number of views of the rooms are shown and detailed instructions are given for making the items. I chose to return my book because I was not interested in any of the 8 themes. I was looking for design ideas for a girl's room.
The themes are:
1. Butterfly/dragonfly: butterflies and dragonflies make a cute theme for a girl's bedroom but there rendition seemed a bit tacky looking to me.
2. Cowboy theme: I thought this one was really cute, but we don't have any boys.
3. Pink and white frilly floral theme: they call it Good morning Princess. It just wasn't the look I had in mind.
4. Jungle/Zoo theme: really cute ideas but again it seemed better for a boy. Included directions for making a bamboo screen, bamboo lamp and bamboo headboard!
5. The magical garden: again, a bit too frilly and floral for my taste
6. Sailing, seaside theme: really cute! We live in Minnesota so the seaside, sailing theme seemed to fit a little more coastal child...
7. Chicken coop. There were some good ideas if you are looking for a chicken-type theme with red, blues and yellows. Chickens weren't what I had in mind.
8. Memory Lane: girl's room, I didn't care for it. It looked like Mary Engelbreit designed the furniture. There was a comforter that looked like the Jack and Jill pictures from the reading books...
It would be a good book to order if you want a jungle/zoo, cowboy or seaside/sailing theme.
Good Ideas.......2005-07-13
Although some styles in this book are outdated, I feel that it provided inspiration for my own projects. After reading this book, I had ideas for redecorating my two daughters' rooms. My favorite room ideas were the princess room and the nostalgia room. The cowboy room was really cute too. Good themes, projects, and clear instructions are included in this book. If you are in need of some inspiration, this book will help.
8 great creative rooms w/ detail instructions and templates........2004-04-07
This book gives you 8 different rooms to choose from. Some of them include a "Princess Room" that is full of pink and frills. It gives you good ideas to update your childs room with out having to purchase alot of expensive furniture. It seems to concentrate on refurbishing basic furniture with paint, material and embellishments. The Nautical themed room could be used for a boy or girl with just a few changes in color and accessories.
The Cowboy room is ideal for "Buckaroos" of all ages. This could be used for a todler now, and as he matures could easily be updated with more elaborate accesories. The twin bed that is made out of a tree with the bark still on it is unique. Another room excellent for a boy or girl is the "Bug Room." The most creative item in this room, I think is the room screen made out of recycled screen doors. The colors are lovely opaque blues and greens. This room is accented with butterflies and dragonflies. This book is not your typical decorators book that gives you just pictures to go by. It give you the patterns (many in color) and instructions to help you create a room that will please your child for many years. Other themes included are "Wild Kingdom," The "Chicken Coop," the "Magical Garden," and "Memory Lane" that is filled with nostalgia.
Common Themes and Simple Instructions but Uninspiring.......2002-02-22
If you're searching for a book full of unique ideas for kids' rooms, you will be sadly disappointed as I was. I found the ideas to be mediocre and seen before almost everywhere. If, however, you are seeking simple, cheap, easy to do ideas, that you've seen before, but didn't know how to accomplish, then buy this book. The instructions seem to be very clear and easy to follow, with most of the ideas requiring very little materials or skill. In fact, many of the ideas begin with ready-made furnishings (i.e. tables, chairs, bedding, curtains...). The book does contain detailed patterns, but you probably have the equivalent in your clipart files. In short, this book is good for the person who has NO ideas about decorating for kids, and who can't replicate ideas without some instruction. It's a beginner level basic book.

Good ideas for those on a budget.......2004-03-19
Contrary to the other review, not everyone has a lot of space and money to decorate for their baby. If you have the desire and a little creativity, some of the ideas in this book would work very well. With my first child, I thought I had to follow all the "rules" and most of my decorating & furniture came from stores which is fine but expensive. For my next child, I am going to put some of the ideas in this book to use. I love the idea of hanging a colorful canopy over the crib with dowel rods. Babies don't care that what they are looking at is made out of a butter tub as long as it's interesting and stimulating. Children grow too fast to spend a lot of money on infant decorations.
Baby Space : Finding, Furnishing, Decorating, and Equipping.......2001-09-12
This book is a joke. The ideas for making items for a baby's room is right out of pre-school. Margerine tubs for a mobile?!!!
Are you kidding me?! Don't waste your money on this book like I did unless you want to know how to turn your bathroom into a nursery (yes it's in there!).
A clever little book for first baby........2000-12-08
Some obvious ideas of where to put the baby along with some ingenious ones I would never have thought of. It's a good first book on decorating for the first born with really charming illustrations - inspirational.

The beginning lessons focus on the basics: you open and close files, learn the Publisher interface, and create a new publication. Next you design pages by working with frames, columns, headers, footers, backgrounds, and printing specs, and by adding, editing, and rearranging text. Next, you add existing graphics and original WordArt, work with color, prepare your work for a printing service, examine proofs, and use the mail-merge feature to create mass mailings. Lastly, you create and post a Web site complete with links and graphics. --Kathleen Caster

Customer Reviews:
a very basic explanation.......1999-09-17
This book does give a very basic introduction to this program. For people who will actually USE the program should find a more detailed book. The Dummies Series in this case is a better option.
Good book. The author needs to show some finished work.......1999-08-08
I was able to grasp the concepts of the book within a very short time, although I had not done any desktop publishing before. The author needs, however to be more specific in certain areas, such as when he speaks about creating multiple spread. Very worthwhile buy.
JJA good book on MS Pub 98.......1999-05-16
Easy to look up how to instructions. Instructions easy to follow

Beautiful and Fascinating Reflection.......2000-05-08
I truly enjoyed reading "Report from Part Two" by Gwendolyn Brooks. I read the book as part of the research I did for a school project and I was fascinated by the stories and poems I found within. The book is written in fragments that combine to form a remarkable image. We learn about Gwendolyn Brooks through her reflections on those around her, and revel in the beautiful prose and poetry she bestows on the reader. A great read for anyone even remotely interested in this wonderful poet!

From the supplier: The Missouri Broadcasters Assn has warned KMOV (Channel 4) over a two-part investigative report entitled 'The Sorry State of Jeff City' by news reporter Jamie Allman. The state broadcast association said that the series could affect its lobbying efforts for tax breaks for TV stations shifting to high-definition TV technology, known as the 'HDTV Tax Break.' The May 1999 series criticized legislators for chronic absenteeism at committee meetings and nonperformance of work assignments and questioned the special treatment of lobbyists.
