Finalist for the 2005 Ben Franklin Awards
"Tapply is . . . a worthy successor to Hammett and both MacDonalds (Ross and John)." -Chicago Tribune "
Only a few writers of crime fiction have managed to generate prose this leanly poetic in the service of their hard-boiled stories. Tapply does it all the time." -The Boston Globe
William G. Tapply has created a fresh new world in BITCH CREEK, a steamy, perfectly crafted mystery introducing Stoney Calhoun, an unlikely hero. Stoney is a man without a past. A lightning strike obliterated his memory, and, as so many might like to do, he was given a chance to completely reinvent himself. That's not an easy task when a man doesn't know the slightest thing about himself. But Stoney was driven by some current within and ended up as a fishing guide in Maine. He's reeducating himself, he's in love, and life is good-until his friend and fellow fishing guide is murdered and Stoney suspects that he himself was the target. In a riveting process of revelation, Stoney begins investigating the murder and learns to his surprise that he is, in fact, a trained investigator. The process of discovering the murderer is also a process of self-discovery. Tapply has introduced an unlikely, yet intensely likeable protagonist. He has fashioned an ingenious plot simultaneously unfolding layers of personality and intrigue in his stunning new novel.

Great new character!.......2007-03-13
Tapply has created a great new character for his readers: Stoney Calhoun.
As most fans probably read Robert Parker as well, I'd have to say I like Stoney Calhoun at least as much as Jesse Stone, if not more. It's great that Tapply and Parker have moved into new characters because like Spenser, Brady Coyne is/was getting too old for his exploits. Not that I'd like to see Brady Coyne novels stop entirely of course. This new series allows for much much more fishing than lawyer Coyne, and is set up in Maine with the main character being a fishing guide, no less. So Tapply is better able to draw on his fishing magazine career and the novel really genuinely creates a natural rural Maine environment.
Great relaxing mystery with a new mysterious main character. Good Stuff!

Stonewall Jackson Calhoun is a man without a past. He has no recollection of anything that happened in his life before he woke up in a Virginia Hospital. He was told things like where he was born and who his parents were and that he was divorced. But none of that told Stoney what kind of man he was and what he did to make a living. When Stoney left the hospital he was pulled to Maine, something told him that was the place for him to be. He had money in his pocket and more was deposited in an account for him every month, where the money came from he did not know. Stoney heads out to Maine and ends up in a little town called Dublin. He finds the perfect piece of land and decides to build a house on it. One day as he was working a young man came up and introduced himself as Lyle McMahan. Stoney hired him to help him build his house, when they were not working they were fishing. Lyle knew all kinds of good out of the way places. The two became very good friends. Around this time Stoney also met Kate Balaban. She owned a bait and
tackle shop and hired Stoney to work for her. They decided to also offer guided fishing trips, when Kate was looking for another guide Stoney told her about Lyle and she hired him.
Five years later Stoney was working in the shop when an older gentleman came in and wanted a fishing guide. Stoney did not care for him and called Lyle to come and take the man out. But, the next day Lyle had not shown up at home or his girlfriends and Stoney got worried. With a feeling of dread Stoney started investigating what happened to Lyle. After several days he found Lyle's body in a pond, he had drowned. There was no sign of the man he took fishing. Stoney decides it is his fault that Lyle is dead, since he should have taken the man instead. He throws himself into finding out the truth about what happened that day. During this time he gets the feeling that he must have been in law enforcement of some kind. Stoney questions many people and starts putting pieces of the puzzle together. With Kate's help they catch the men who killed Lyle and learn why they did it. Of course there is much more to the story but you will have to read the book to find out what.
Mr. Tapply did a great job with descriptions and dialogue, it is a book that does not want to be put down. It draws you into the story and you just have to keep going to find out what will happen next. Even though a lot of the book talks about fly fishing and different flies, it would still be interesting to anyone.
I really enjoyed this book very much and would look for more of Mr. Tapply's books. "Bitch Creek" is a laid back mystery that grabs you and won't let go.
great until the end.......2005-09-15
Previous reviewers have summarized the story. Regarding the book's strengths and weaknesses: for about 2/3 of the story I was fascinated and puzzled. The solution, however, does not hold up well when I look back over the book from the end. For one thing, given the solution, the killer acted very irrationally, which is never satisfying. In addition, I think the pacing of the story was off -- too many facts emerged in the last few pages, in an Agatha Christie-like, rabbit-out-of-a-hat manner. Many of these late-discovered facts should have been known to the characters sooner, and their ignorance makes the ending more strained.
3.5 Stars........2005-07-19
There was only one thing that dropped my rating down a notch. It's clear this is the beginning of a new series, and the element that indicated that was the one thing I found more annoying than intriguing about this book. It felt too contrived. However, the basic plot of this book was good. I liked the characters, the dialogue, sense of place and all the elements that are important to me in a book. Will I read the next in the series? Perhaps, but a bit begrudgingly.
A new series by Tapply.......2005-02-26
Tapply, the author of the excellent Brady Coyne series is back with a new character. An interesting twist is that the character, Stoney Jackson has almost no memory because of being hit by lightening. Only an author of the caliber of Tapply could bring of this rather bizarre, interesting premise. His memory has not completely disappeared and there are many hints of his previous occupation that will provide more plots in the future, I expect.
Stoney has built himself a house in the woods, is finding happiness in his involvement with his boss, Kate, another interesting character. Kate is married to a man with MS and brings greater depth to the story. Tapply capitalizes on his love and knowledge of fishing, the outdoors, animals and Maine to bring a real sense of place to the story. Life is getting better for him when a fellow worker and friend is murdered and Stoney suspects that he was the intended victim.
The plotting and pace carries this book along and it is a page turner. One small caveat is that the final solution/reason for the murder seems a bit forced but one does not feel this until the book is completed. A good read and recommended.

A fantasy full of deceit.......2007-02-03
Reviewed by Ian McCurley, age 13, for Reader Views (1/07)
Jodi is 16 years old and hasn't talked to her friend Neil much in the past three years. One day, when she's walking through the forest, she comes upon him sleeping on the side of a path. When she touches his arm to wake him up, she is sucked through the earth and finds herself on a hilltop with Neil. They are captured by the Hachi, basketball-sized spiders which eat their victims alive. Jodi and Neil are rescued by Arax and his nephew, Caden, who are the leaders of one of the many tribes of Aten. While at first they seem friendly, Jodi and Neil find that they are to be sold as slaves in the town of Holo. When Jodi and Caden are separated from Neil, Arax and the rest of the tribe, she learns that Caden is not the monster she once thought he was, and that he had the ability to control people with his voice. She also realizes that she is falling in love with him. They wind up in the forest of the Awes where they meet up with Aladar who steals Jodi and threatens to marry her off to his cook. However, this is just an elaborate prank, and she is taken to Holo anyway. The major spots her immediately as an outsider, attempts to kidnap her and fails. Jodi is just about to be sold when Neil awakens. They are both back on the side of the path in the forest. Several days later, she finds Neil at the same spot again, and they are transported back to Aten. This time, they find themselves at the side of an old, cracked highway. Since on Aten they normally fight with swords and bows and ride horses down dirt roads, what was a highway doing in Aten? As Jodi meets up with Caden's tribe once more, the question is asked, "Is Aten just a dream world, or is it something more?"
"Key to Aten" is for kids age 11 and up who enjoy science-fiction and fantasy. The author's point is that not all is as it seems because in "Key to Aten," Jodi's allies become her enemies just as her foes become her friends. Even the world of Aten itself is not what it first seemed.
Lynn Sinclair outdoes herself in the book "Key to Aten" which is a story full of harsh environments and lovable characters. Watch out for the second chronicle of Aten, "Return to Aten."
Fairly good.......2006-03-15
Parts of the story are predictable, and in parts the characters' motivations aren't necessarily clear. And there are characters who don't so much show us their personalities as tell them to us (or someone else tells the heroine what another person's personality is like). There's a "but" coming, and here it is: But there are flashes of enormous fun and thrilling originality--another reviewer mentioned the sentient, playful(?) maze--and there is mystery, and there are people who are not what they seem, and the plot will keep the reader guessing. The book has too much "telling" and not enough "showing," but a more disappointing aspect is that the author quickly abandons the question of whether Aten is real or not, except for a few offhand comments. I was intrigued by how the two people from "our" world would explore the question of reality versus dream, whether the one person believed the other was even there at all, whether they thought they had hooked into each other's dreams because of a psychic bond from a long-lost friendship, how much one should question whether one can fall in love with a dream.... Oh, maybe I just wanted it to be a different book instead of flowing like the light, brisk romance it is. I rate this book "average," but I'm glad I read it. Good for readers looking for a brief foray into a dream and a romance (with a hint of mystery and danger).
Must read for romance and fantasy lovers.......2005-10-07
Key to Aten is a wonderfully entertaining book that takes the reader to a far off world filled with mystery, intrigue, romance and fantasy. It is a place in which the imagined becomes real and the real becomes ever so dangerous for a lost teenaged girl. Forests that grow or diminish at the command of a powerful, handsome leader, unavoidable flying mazes, prisons and slave auctions all contribute seamlessly to this fast paced novel richly spiced with a blossoming romance. Key to Aten is a great read, leaving this reader anxiously awaiting the second book of the series.
For Fantasy lovers everywhere.......2005-06-11
I very much enjoyed this book. The bond between Jodi and Neil was extraordinary. I was overjoyed to see a lot of great topics in this book; it had romance, friendship and fighting all at once. The way the author put every sentence, every word was amazing. It is a wonderful fantasy for ages 12 and up. Even those who don't usually read fantasy, will not be able to put this book down.
Wonderful!.......2005-06-09
In KEY TO ATEN, the reader travels with sixteen-year-old Jodi Greer to a mystical and frightening world, a world where she holds the key to its future-a world where she alone faces a decision that will determine her own future and safety. Jodi's journey to Aten is filled with twists and turns throughout, magical places, fascinating characters, and a story that keeps the pages turning.
Ms. Sinclair has a way with description that not only sets the stage-it takes you there! I'm looking forward to seeing the next book of the series on the shelves.
Absolutely wonderful! A must read for both teens and adults who love well-written stories filled with friendship, romance, suspense, adventure, and mystical, yet terrifying worlds

Another approach.......2007-01-11
I found this book very helpful for someone looking for another approach to giving up alcohol other than AA.
Alcohol: How to Give It Up and Be Glad You Did.......2006-11-02
This book is based on Albert Ellis' Rational Emotive Therapy. It's a bit over simplified, but alcoholics typically need that perspective. It is a useful book at the level of attempting to re-frame addictive thinking so that detox is possible.
Reads like a lesson in psychology, not that helpful in my opinion........2005-09-27
This book focuses way too much on disputing irrational self-defeating thoughts such as putting yourself down for not being able to stop drinking. The books answers your self-defeating thinking with such retorts as "prove it" over and over again. This book is also very ambiguous with confusing statements like this one all throughout the book.
QUOTE FROM BOOK...
" If you only believe you don't want to be deprived of alcohol, would you then believe that life without it is awful? Usually not. If you believe, however, that you must not be deprived, you can easily think that abstinence is awful. If you only don't want discomfort, would you then believe that you can't stand it? Probably not. You may, however, think that you can't stand it when you believe that you must not have discomfort."
huh......?????? what?????
That's how this whole book is written. Also, there's too much emphasis put on how great a feeling alcohol is. That's dangerous thinking for someone looking to get away from it. For someone who has been drinking for many years, the feeling is not that great anymore. This book put ideas in my head that really weren't there before. It focuses way too much on assuming you put yourself down constantly for not being able to quit drinking. I never really thought like that. There are better books out there. This one just didn't work for me.
Great Book!.......2003-09-25
Very enlightening for people stating, "I don't really want to quit, I've tried to quit and I can't, or I don't really think I have a problem."
Dr. Tate explains how to include rational thinking techniques (REBT) to affect your behaviors. Rather than just trying to solely change your behaviors (drinking), which almost always fails, you must first change your thinking (irrational beliefs). Once understood, the relationship between your thinking, emotions, and behaviors will not only help you battle addictions, but also every day challenges.
Each time I sit down to read the book, I end up reading it cover to cover.
A Practical Alternative to the 12-Step Approach.......2001-11-21
Dr. Tate has written a thoughtful, practical guide for overcoming self-defeating addictive behavior. The book is an easy to read, self-help guide, which focuses on the application of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy for quitting alcohol and drugs now and for good. Dr. Tate explains and shows how to take control of your behavior and emotions--without having to attend meetings for the rest of your life. By recognizing and eliminating the irrational beliefs behind addictive behavior, alcohol/drug-free living becomes a natural way of daily life, not a meeting after meeting challenge to try and remain sober, one-day-at-a-time. Alcohol: How To Give It Up and be Glad You Did, is an exceptional book, which answers many of the questions traditional 12-step programs do not. Required reading for professionals and lay-persons in need of alternatives to largely innefective policies of America's Addiction Treatment Industry.

Exotic foods from the orient.......2002-01-17
I enjoy oriental foods and wanted to learn to cook some of my favorite dishes. This cook book is excellent. It gives clear and concise instructions as well as a wide variety of dishes to choose from. Also, the cook book has beautiful photographs for most of the receips. Items are not hard to find in your local grocery store. This cook book was also made in conjunction with the Betty Cooker cook books. So if you love Betty Cooker cook books this cook book is a plus!
Too Salty.......2001-12-06
If you really like salty foods or lots of dark soy sause, then this might be for you.
I'm not an expert chief, but I do cook quiet a bit of ethnic foods. I like my dishes to have a range of flavours that are pleasent to the palete and easy on the eyes.
I found that most of the recipes looked good but following the directions caused me to throw them out because I couldn't stand the taste.
Good for the beginner.......2000-11-01
My first Chinese cookbook for my first foray into Chinese cooking. The recipes here are simple and classic, if rather plain. I like that the ingredients are all easy to find in my area, and that the recipes are very quick! Important for me as a working person who still likes to come home and cook something interesting for dinner. I don't like recipes with ingredient lists that are a foot long. These recipes are short and easy to follow, although a bit cryptic, which led me to make a mistake in one recipe. But I was able to start over on the mistake and the recipe came out well. I would have liked more photos - one per dish would be ideal. I recommend this for the beginning Chinese cook, but not for the beginning cook.
Restaurant quality food from your kitchen!.......1999-11-22
Every recipe I've tried tastes like it's from a quality Chinese restaurant. The recipes are easy to understand, I can find the ingredients in my local market, and the finished quality is consistently delicious.
Excellent first Chinese cookbook.......1999-09-22
I came across this book recently and found it very useful for my initial experience at cooking Chinese. Although I'm a pretty proficient cook,, I've never had much success trying Chinese dishes before. The difficulty I'd had with some of the other well-known Chinese cookbooks is that they are too complicated if you've never cooked with some of the ingredients before -- too many variables for the novice. This book takes a somewhat simpler, yet satisfying approach. It doesn't lack interest. I think I'll learn a great deal from it.

Horses: A Guide To Selection, Care And Enjoyment.......2007-08-23
Very informative and helpful for a new owner or beginner. It is a textbook worth having.
Not what I expected.......2007-03-25
I was expecting a book about the care, feeding, breeding and perhaps some history on the various horse breeds, and I was expecting photos. The care feeding and breeding information is there, but not much on the breeds, and what VERY FEW photos or drawings are included are ALL in black and white. The ONLY color picture is on the cover. This is probably why they don't let you see much from the Look Inside because people might not buy this book after they got to flip through it. I believe the information is helpful but it is sorely lacking in illustrations. We will keep it, but I would not reccomend it to anyone unless they are looking for a dry college text, or possibly an informational reference. It isn't a "fun" book by any means. My family is dissapointed.
Excellent text used at local community college.......2007-03-09
This is a required text for Equine Science course at our local community college and it covers A LOT of info. Highly recommend as a horse Bible. It is very thick so I wish I had purchased the hard cover for easier handling.
Good, informative as an education and reference guide.......2000-02-02
I used this book for an animal science class in college. I'm quite familiar with horses, but never the less, this book is definitely recommended for most anyone to have around as a basic horse book. For new horseback riders or owners, I'd definitely recommended it. The author covers essentially every topic imaginable, from behavior, conformation, breeds, stabling, feed, teeth, gaits, handling, conditioning, grooming, illnesses, farriers, diseases, performance, breeding and genetics. Even though I was familiar with most of the material covered, it is extremely handy to have such a book on hand for things like a dental chart for aging, or the wight to energy ratios for various grains. Just a lot of stuff down in writing that you might not always remember off the top of your head.

Book Description
The rare book dealers who delighted readers with the history of their bookselling days in Old Books, Rare Friends now offer the other side of their story -- an intimate look at the joys of a relationship that has lasted more than half a century. When their friendship and business partnership began in the 1940s, Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine Stern were pioneers in a man's world. Now approaching their nineties, the duo, who -- among their many discoveries -- unearthed Louisa May Alcott's pseudonymous blood-and-thunder stories, remains a vibrant institution in the rare book trade, even as the Internet changes their field -- and their community -- forever.
After publishing Old Books, Rare Friends, Rostenberg and Stern received a flood of fan mail asking about their personal lives, and they have responded with poignant honesty and the warmth for which they are famous, as they reflect on their lives and their remarkable partnership. Bookends recounts their fascinating histories: family backgrounds, business adventures, the men they did not marry, and their approach to the bittersweet trials of aging. More than just a dual memoir, Bookends is also a chronicle of the cultural changes of twentieth-century American life and a loving farewell to the golden age of book collecting. Filled with wisdom and humor, this volume is a tribute to Rostenberg and Stern's passion for the written word -- and for life itself.
Catching us off guard with their candor, they offer their insights regarding their business, their way of life, and their worldview. Above all, they present the story of a special relationship. At a time when people find it increasingly difficult to connect, here we have the seamless story of a shared life. It is the unique product of an earlier time, yet it is a timeless reflection on the very nature of friendship. Though their fantastic partnership is un-reproducible, the ideal they have established, for the integration of one life so completely with another, contains lessons for all of us.
Without husband or children they created a loving home when this was uncharted territory for women. They nurtured a business and life partnership that has lasted more than half a century and has only gotten stronger with time. When the passing years began to claim one's hearing and the other's sight, they became each other's eyes and ears. A meditation on aging and togetherness, this book is also the narrative of two pioneering single, Jewish women making their way in tandem through a world largely organized to keep them in their place. It is a gentle, wise story, told in their inimitable style, sparse, unadorned, and honest. Their affirmations supersede their uncertainties. As they write, "Bookends support books and come in pairs...If the word encapsulates our past, it looks also to the future, and to the books -- lived together, written together -- that will follow." They confront the challenges of aging in a no-nonsense tone, and, in facing them, give us an ideal of enduring human friendship that can't help but touch the heart.

"Old Books, Rare Friends" is a better read.......2002-04-07
If you haven't already read "Old Books, Rare Friends" by the same authors, then you may enjoy this title.
However, if you've already read "Old Books, Rare Friends," you'll probably be very disappointed. "Bookends" is a much shorter work, and much of it simply repeats "Old Books, Rare Friends."
"Bookends" leaves out most of the stories concerning the authors' book collecting and instead focuses on their relationships with others (e,g,., men they didn't marry, mothers, dogs).

Though it has an unrivaled range of blue flowers and includes plants suitable for many gardening and landscaping situations, this North American native genus has long been underutilized. Its species range from Canada south through southern Mexico and from coast to coast, and there are forms from ground-hugging mats through shrubs to trees. A complete horticultural and botanical treatment of the genus aimed at both gardeners and botanists, this book finally gives Ceanothus — with so many plants that tolerate sun and shade, thrive in arid conditions, and bear a profusion of beautiful, fragrant flowers — the recognition it deserves.

Description:
Ceanothus velutinous is often considered to be an aggressive competitor with young conifers in the western United States. Using a conifer (noble fir, Pacific silver fir, Douglas-fir, and western hemlock) plantation in western WA where Ceanothus had become established, we assessed how conifer-shrub crown interactions affected individual tree growth before and after cutting Ceanothus from around individual trees. For all conifer species, trees surrounded by but with leaders above Ceanothus were 18-70% taller than open-grown trees, and trees with leaders below Ceanothus were 22-50% shorter than open-grown trees; suggesting that Ceanothus had both positive and negative effects on tree growth. Few seedlings (8%) of Douglas-fir were found under Ceanothus. However, because of shade-intolerance, Douglas-fir growing under Ceanothus exhibited the greatest reduction in height (53%) compared to open-grown trees. The most shade-tolerant species, Pacific silver fir, had the least reduction in height (22%) under Ceanothus, yet because of its slow growth, most of its seedlings (62%) were found growing under Ceanothus. Twelve years after cutting Ceanothus, growth rates increased for all four tree species independent of the type of previous interaction with Ceanothus; however, mean tree heights and diameters for all four conifers remained substantially lower for trees that had been overtopped by Ceanothus compared to trees with leaders not overtopped at the time of release. Thus, the benefits of growing with or being released from encroachment by Ceanothus will vary with conifer species and the degree of conifer-shrub interaction and may persist for many years.

Description:
Little previous work has been conducted on effects of natural, high-severity wildfires on nitrogen (N) dynamics. We measured aboveground plant biomass, foliar N, and net N mineralization 2 years after stand-replacing fires in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) forests in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA. We detected a five-fold difference in foliar N (% dry weight) among 14 species, from 0.77% in the native grass Calamagrostis rubescens, to 3.4% in the native N-fixer Lupinus argenteus and the non-native forb Lactuca serriola. We also observed higher foliar N in the burned stands for four of six species that occurred in both burned and unburned areas. Mean net N mineralization ranged from -23 to +27mg-Nkgsoil^-^1year^-^1, and was predominantly NO"3^-. However, total biomass and foliar N, for all species combined, showed no relationships with site, fire severity, or net N mineralization-possibly because of (i) lack of inorganic N limitation, (ii) methodological shortcomings, (iii) spatial structure existing at different scales than we measured, or (iv) insufficient plant biomass at this early stage of post-fire development to respond to local variation in N availability.

Description:
Overstory tree thinning and prescribed fire are used to restore ecosystem structure and function in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) forests of the southwest but little research has examined constraints on population-level responses of understory plants. In order to study growth and reproduction of a common shrub species after forest restoration treatments, we monitored Fendler ceanothus (Ceanothus fendleri Gray) plants from 1999 to 2002 in thinned and unthinned overstory units. To study effects of tree thinning, we analyzed relationships of overstory stand density (Reineke's SDI) and current-year branch length, number of branches, and biomass, and also evaluated the importance of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus) herbivory (Browsing) as a predictor in linear models. To study effects of prescribed fire, we examined mortality, seedling emergence, and growth response on experimentally burned and unburned plots. SDI and browsing were significantly and negatively correlated with F. ceanothus current-year branch length, biomass, and leaf area but relationships were generally weak. Across the 4 years, browsing appeared to be consistently more important than SDI in explaining variation in growth. Although SDI and browsing were significant predictors of growth in years with near normal precipitation, models failed in drought years. Burning resulted in 17-32% mortality whereas 0-5% of plants died on unburned plots. Mortality of burned plants was positively related to amount of forest floor consumed during prescribed fires. One growing season after fire, surviving burned plants responded by producing long resprouts. Current-year branches were consistently longer on burned than unburned plants only where plots were protected from large herbivores. Unburned plants had more current-year branches and greater biomass than burned plants. No seedlings emerged on unburned plots but were found on 44% of burned plots. A quadratic function represented the relationship between seedling emergence and forest floor consumption. Our results suggest that restoration treatments in ponderosa pine forests of northern Arizona can help increase abundance of F. ceanothus but population responses may be slow, particularly when constrained by ungulate herbivory, fire-related mortality of plants and dormant seeds, and drought.

Good Type Casting.......2000-08-30
"Bad break" is one of the many keywords alphabetically arranged with diagrams and examples in THE TYPENCYCLOPEDIA: A USER'S GUIDE TO BETTER TYPOGRAPHY. Frank J. Romano also includes math symbols and proof marks and ends with current typeface names crosslisted to other manufacturers' designs and with a full index of terms. He gives a mission statement for typography as readable text with consistent word spacing, frequent paragraphs, narrower line lengths and well-designed typefaces on a page with enough white space for non-type gutters, leading, margins, and space around heads and illustrations.
The author throws in good typographical small talk, such as letting us know that Aldus Manutius was one of the first printers to punctuate text. He puts in humorous comments, too, such as saying that the art department is low on work when graphic designers put together character or word pictures to create, for example, that famous image of President Lincoln's face. Finally, he sets good typographic standards, such as avoiding back slanting type because it goes against reading flow; making quotes a size smaller than text; restricting vertical setting to a short line with otherwise horizontal type and vertical stacking to printing down book backbones; and using evocative typography and special effects in moderation. All this and more make for easy reviewing of typography as well as good reading along with Lewis Blackwell's TWENTIETH CENTURY TYPE REMIX, Robert Bringhurst's THE ELEMENTS OF TYPOGRAPHIC STYLE, and Jan Tschichold's TREASURY OF ALPHABETS AND LETTERING.

southern family life.......2007-04-02
My family is from the south. This book brings back memories of stories
my mother experienced growing up in the south.I loved this book, I made
sure my teenage children read it to.This is a good book to share with
all generations in your family who can relate to the old school southern
family times.
If you have roots in the South.......2005-11-03
This is a great book about growing up in the South in simpler but by no means easier times. It's also a great book to share with teen and young adult readers whose family came from the South.
