Reed Arvin's previous novel,
The Last Goodbye, was ""the best thing a thriller can be: suspenseful, intelligent, and well written"" (Harlan Coben), and had the critics raving:
People magazine stated, ""You'll be hooked,"" and the
New York Times declared it ""sultry, devious, adrenaline-boosting suspense."" Now comes a vivid and haunting tale of one man's search for the truth -- no matter what the consequences.
Thomas Dennehy, senior prosecutor in Davidson County, Tennessee, doesn't recognize Nashville anymore: a decade of relentless immigration means cops are learning Spanish, and the DA' s office is looking for Vietnamese translators. Thomas's latest case is prosecuting Moses Bol, a Sudanese refugee who faces the death penalty for killing a white woman in the Nations, a notorious, racially charged part of town. Bol's conviction seems certain, until a university professor claims Thomas sent the wrong man to the death chamber in a previous case. The DA' s office is rocked to its core, but within days another blow falls: a beautiful and brilliant anti-death penalty activist mysteriously surfaces as Bol's alibi, claiming she was with him at the time of the crime. Bol's case becomes a lightning rod as protesters on all sides converge on Nashville and tensions threaten to explode.
Meanwhile, Bol's alibi has her own secrets -- and is terrified of someone working behind the scenes to get what he wants -- even if it means murder.
Will Dennehy be able to piece things together before everything he believes about the law, and about justice, is torn apart?
Vivid with the emotional complexity that has become the hallmark of Reed Arvin's work,
Blood of Angels is filled with nonstop action, impeccable detail, and unforgettable characters, making this a novel that is impossible to resist.

Customer Reviews:
Now this is how you write a book!.......2007-09-13
The start was a bit misleading ( I thought I'd stumbled upon an anti-death penalty rant disguised as a novel ), but was pleasantly surprised to find myself in the middle of a fantastic thriller.
I recommend readers go through the bargain hardcover book section of their local bookstores and experiment with new authors on the cheap. That's how I found Reed Arvin and now I plan on reading all of his books.
A great read!.......2006-07-27
Thomas Dennehy, Assistant District Attorney of Davidson County Tennessee, has his hands full in Blood of Angels.
The case of one Wilson Owens has come back to haunt the DA's office as new evidence has come to light that the State of Tennessee may have executed the wrong man two years ago.
Dennehy was the prosecutor in the case known at the Sunshine Grocery murders and has the singular notoriety of having convicted two men in separate trials and of separate crimes of killing the same woman. This in itself puts a tornadic twist into this book that would make it a brilliant story, but Arvin goes one-step further by hurling the racially charged murder of a local white-trash girl by a Sudanese immigrant into the mix.
Kwame Jamal Hale has come forward and delivered what may prove to be very damning evidence that he, not Owens, was the murderer at the Sunshine Grocery. His claim? He knows where the heretofore-undiscovered murder weapon can be found. Dennehy, his boss David Rayburn and soon-to-be retired fellow prosecutor Carl Becker, can only wait and watch as the circus rolls into downtown Nashville and the DA's office prepares to tender their resignations en toto, if it is proved that Wilson Owens was innocent and unlawfully executed.
Meanwhile the bond hearing of the suspected Sudanese murderer Moses Bol comes to court. The DA is dealt another blow when bail is set at $1.5 million and is paid by one Fiona Towns, a Presbyterian preacher of a dying central Nashville church that has less the dozen members.
These two stories together are not enough for Arvin. He tosses in the failing personal life of Dennehy, a cast of characters that make every page a thrill to turn and just enough action for you to gnaw your fingernails down to the cuticles. Dennehy has a wit and dark sense of humor that would be depressing if it were not written so well. Add his ex-wife, her wealthy doctor second husband, and a daughter that truly loves her daddy, and you have the full package in a legal thriller that you will be proud to recommend to every fellow fiction reader you know.
Armchair Interviews says: If you love legal thrillers, check this one out!
Greatly Entertaining.......2006-07-20
I loved "The Will" by Arvin and grabbed "Blood of Angels" as soon as it was released in hardcover. It is a book to own and I will read again one day. Great suspense, character developement and plot. This book has it all. It's one of those you can't put down once you start it.
As near to perfection as possible.......2006-04-27
As a former resident of Nashville and currently living in the city of Frankling (the hero's city) I was expecting to be somewhat familiar with the sites and locations. What I was not expecting was the absolutely riveting story - a police procedural of the first degree. I now know how residents of New York, DC, LA & Chicago feel when they read stories that take place in their city. The areas described are well-known and provide a reference point for the story.
This is the New South. Absent are evangelicals, the dominant Democrat party, close-knit generational families and a whites only landscape. Instead, Thomas Dehenny, the district attorney, is a driven, dedicated hard-drinking, divorced father who never attends church. One detects that the author (through Thomas) decries those who devote their lives to defending murderers and rapists. He asks, What about the victims? Who speaks for them?
In this case, there is a strong possiblity that the wrong man was executed. The crime involved two defendents - the shooter & the medic who actually killed the woman through negligance (he was on meth). At the same time, the city is rocked by the brutal murder of a Nationite woman by an African refugee. The struggle between low-class whites (The Nation) & the growing numbers of refugees and immigrants is real & depicted with accuracy. Into the fray steps Fiona Tonws, local Presbyterian minister/activist. Despite their positions, a romance breaks out between the two. The real villian is revealed midway through the book & he is as horrible and clever as they come. The ending was sheer perfection as was the entire story. I cannot say enough about this book! Buy it.
Rolls right along..........2006-01-06
This was a novel that was very easy and fun to read due to the many plot twists. You would start to think the book was resolved and then realize there were still more things that were going to happen. I don't normally like 'legal' type suspense novels, however, this one didn't get all wrapped up in courtrooms and leagalesque speak. There was action!! The DA actually had to go out in the field to solve the mysteries.

Book Description
From the fourth-grade girl who never gets invited to a birthday party because classmates think she’s “weird” to the geek who is terrific at math but is failing every other subject, quirky children are different from other kids in ways that they–and their parents–have a hard time understanding. They present a host of challenges that standard parenting books fail to address. Now, in Quirky Kids, seasoned pediatricians Perri Klass and Eileen Costello provide the expert guidance that families with quirky children so desperately need.
Klass and Costello illuminate the confusing list of terms often applied to quirky children–from Asperger’s syndrome and nonverbal learning disability to obsessive-compulsive behavior and sensory integration dysfunction. The authors also discuss various therapy options, coping strategies, and available medications. Most of all, they will help quirky kids lead rich, fulfilling lives at home, at school, even on the playground.
Customer Reviews:
No one I think is in my tree.......2007-01-07
When I was a little kid, so-called "quirky" kids were just called "weirdo-" or worse- and ostracized. Now, the subtleties of developmental disorders and learning disabilities are better understood, and the kids get a diagnosis. But we all know how inexact this still is. The difference between a kid with Asperger's, pervasive developmental delay, nonverbal learning disorder, sensory integration dysfunction or attention deficit disorder might have something to do with the child's unique blend of strengths and weaknesses, but might also have a lot to do with what doctor is doing the diagnosing and through what particular lens they happen to see the world that week. It's just the limitations of the science at this point, but the good news is that that isn't the most important part of the story. Forget the labels. Let's just figure out how to help kids make the most of their strengths and best accommodate or compensate for their weaknesses. The concept of "quirky" kids is a nice one for getting beyond the distraction of diagnostic labels. Drs. Klass and Costello defend the term in their introduction but pointing out that it's "not pejorative. In fact, it's sometimes a compliment." It suggests unusual characteristics, "challenging yet often charming."
Dr. Klass and Dr. Costello are not psychiatrists or child development experts. They are practicing primary-care pediatricians who are also parents. They appreciate the stress parents are under, and I think they strike the right tone in this book. Helpful, factual information is provided in a way that is mostly reassuring but also does not minimize legitimate obstacles. You don't want to patronize parents dealing with real issues, but overly anxious parenting is not in the best interest of the family either.
There are reasons to be optimistic. While there are kids with profound disabilities out there, the quirky kids, those who would have gone undiagnosed a generation ago, mostly end up okay. As the authors point out, "adults are infinitely more accepting than children and teenagers," and quirky kids often thrive when they find a suitable niche in the adult world, whether it be academics, computers, or whatever other vocation where they can pursue their interests.
So the goal is for parents to be educated. Not for parents to try and be experts, but for them to know the right questions to ask their children's doctors, to anticipate what types of situations will be particularly challenging for their children, to know how to talk about their children with relatives, friends, the babysitter. For parents to know that it doesn't make them bad parents if they get irritated and frustrated by their children at times. And for parents to remember to treasure their children for who they are, for the gifts and perspectives they bring to the world.
Between best-selling books and internet sites, there is no shortage of information out there for parents, but it is a mixed bag. For my money, this is the book I would recommend for parents of quirky kids looking for one reliable resource to guide them through their next steps.
Down to earth guidance for parents of quirky kids.......2006-10-30
No matter how much you love and admire your child, learning he is different and will likely have a more challenging life is heartbreaking. I have always loved and adored my quirky son and this book helped me better understand him. When he started learning his letters and reading all before the age of 2, we just thought he was precocious. When he recently started preschool and shut down, I realized there was more to the picture which led to a diagnosis of Asperger's. This book has such a loving title and attitude and yet sets a realistic tone for the challenges of raising a quirky kid. It covered almost every aspect I could hope such a book would cover (schools, playdates, puberty, etc.). My only complaint is that it gave short shrift to a discussion of tantrums and other disciplinary issues unique to raising a child with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder and how best to approach these in a loving but effective way. Nevertheless, an excellent resource for parents, teachers, grandparents and others who care for a quirky kid. Highly recommended.
Quiky Kids was helpful and hopeful.......2006-07-29
Quirky Kids was written by two pediatricians who have special knowledge of developmental delays in children. Their book is helpful and hopeful while being realistic. It breaks the news about the nature of children's developmental delays without scaring parents and it immediately offers many ideas of how and where to get help. Experienced parents' stories give hope and light at the end of the tunnel of diagnosis and treatment.
Having once been a "quirky kid"................2006-06-05
......I am here to tell you that your Asperger Syndrome teen WILL NOT BE DATING. If you think they will, you are in some MAJOR denial. One star deducted for this. If they ever have any relationships with the opposite sex (or same sex, if they are so inclined), they will be in their twenties at least.
As for the person who didn't remember any autistic kids growing up, the spectral disorders like Asperger's and PDD-NOS were not recognized and the kids were considered weird, different, or even retarded. I know a woman whose son is severely autistic and lives in an institution; he is in his 60s, so it's nothing new.
I do not have an official ASD diagnosis but have suspected for some years that I may have one.
That the doctors continue to recommend vaccinations was, IMHO, wise. If a relative had a documented reaction to one, yes, be hesitant and wait, but don't swear them off and risk serious illness or death because of the threat of something that probably won't happen.
An excellent book, well worth the effort...........2005-01-08
There are so many books out there devoted to helping the parents of "special" kids. Most of them, I've found, are either way too touchy-feely or too text-booky. You can usually tell within the first few chapters what particular agenda the author will be focusing on, and with a few exceptions (such as "The Out-of-Sync Child") I hadn't yet found one that really worked for me. This book, however, drew me in right away and kept me coming back at any opportunity I could grab. (Any book that can have me reaching for it during the few minutes it takes to cook fish sticks in the microwave, well, that's a big deal.)
My child is not just "difficult" or "spirited" - and he's also not afflicted in an "obvious" way (ie., on one of his good days, I doubt anyone would think something was amiss with the boy). He exists in that strange place where his behaviors, many of which are far beyond his control, just don't fit in with typical society...a true "quirky kid". This book addresses so many of the issues and situations that our family deals with on a daily basis (and those we will probably have to deal with in the future), and offers sensible, real-life suggestions. The authors seem to have a true understanding of what our kids go through, what the families go through, and where we might be able to make some changes for the better.

Customer Reviews:
Ilegal to cater from home.......2007-09-25
Although the concept of this book is appealing, it is ILLEGAL by health department standards to cater from any home kitchen UNLESS it is fully licensed and certified as a commercial kitchen. Hopefully, this author is not giving permission to folks to attempt to cook and deliver food from home kitchens, which is completely against health department rules.
Great Book!.......2007-09-09
This book is Great! Great! Great! I got it for my partner because I it was something she wanted to do.When I found out that Denise went to CCA (California Culinary Academy)in San Francisco like my partner I new that this book would be great for her. When I told her about it she got so excited that she couldn't wait so we had to go buy it at the bookstore. So far this book has great information. From averages on getting a business license to the supply's you should have to start of. I covers all the little things that you might not even think of when your starting a catering business for the first time. Denise if you your reading this Priscilla and Natalie will definitely be at your seminar in LA next year :)
Not What I Thought It Would Be.......2007-06-01
I originally bought this book because my husband and I are interested in starting a catering business in the next couple of years. I'm currently a culinary student and will be graduating next month. I've worked with caterers and have catered on my own.
With all due respect for Denise Vivaldo's accomplishments, I was disappointed with the content of this book. It provided a lot of information on a high-level overview, but it did not give the detailed information I was looking for.
I would recommend The Professional Caterer's Handbook: How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful Catering Business. It's a bit spendy and more like an encyclopedia but the information is extremely useful and the money well spent.
The best place to begin........2007-02-25
This book is the best place to begin for anyone considering catering as a business. There are so many subjects that I never thought to consider. This is a great guide and, for a minimal investment, can save you making expensive mistakes.
I can't believe I read a how-to book!.......2006-09-08
Denise Vivaldo has done the food service industry a service of her own in writing this book. As a caterer, I couldn't put it down, I read the entire book in one sitting. If you are considering a catering, or even a restaurant business read this book! I found Vivaldo's insight to be not only helpful, but it pointed out areas of the field I had scarcely considered.
Review every book you read- authors deserve your opinions, not just elitist critics.

Customer Reviews:
The book to have!.......2000-08-23
This is the best Rosenthal book available in the English language. It has many photos, explanations and a complete list of marks and model numbers. Most of the information is taken from the extremely rare German book 100 Jahre Rosenthal (100 Years of Rosenthal).
Highly recommended.
Book Description
Most gardeners want their borders to be interesting and colorful over a long season, even year-round if winters are not too severe. With this book, Christopher Lloyd shows how he chooses and orchestrates plants so that the borders always look their best. Once having covered the principles of succession planting, Lloyd explores the ingredients necessary to ensure continuously lively borders — from anchor plants and permanent perennials to drop-in plants and self-sowers. Packed with fresh ideas and practical advice for every season, Succession Planting contains all the information you need to create brilliantly successful year-round planting schemes.
Customer Reviews:
Unattainable Beauty!.......2005-11-28
Succession Planting for Year-round Pleasure is a fantastic book by Christopher Lloyd, who has previously written quite a few, which are also excellent. The photos are among the most beautiful I have ever seen, and I give this book my highest honors. But perhaps it deserves some demerit on the grounds of impracticality or even depressing unattainability.
For one thing, Lloyd's long border at his estate at Great Dixter is 200 feet by 15 feet, so many of the effects which he finds practical are not possible in any garden likely to be owned by the bourgeoisie. Further, he gardens in England in perhaps the equivalent to Zone 8. Despite this, he is always looking to push the limits of hardiness with exotic plants. And outside of Britain and coastal Oregon and Washington, there is virtually nowhere in the English-speaking world where the winters are so mild, and yet the summers are not too hot for many of his plants.
So taken altogether, in any combination of 3 plants you might consider, it's a safe bet that 1 of them either can't be grown in your location, or will require extraordinary levels of coddling to get through the winter. At some level there's nothing wrong with that; who hasn't at least considered growing Dahlias or Gladioli, which must be dug up, but can then be stored in most basements? However, his planting schemes are more labor intensive than this. The semi-hardy and tropical plants he loves must be dug up, or have cuttings taken, and many are wintered under glass; to do this for all of his many varied plants, he apparently has at least 3 different temperatures in his greenhouses or cold frames.
Normal (i.e., not superhuman) gardeners use biennials and short-lived perennials (the ones which seed themselves to death) such as Lupines, many Dianthus, Digitalis (foxglove) and Lychnis coronaria, as relatively easy self-sowers, performing enough dead-heading to keep seedlings to a modest level, and hopefully to keep the mother plant alive as well. For Lloyd and his head gardener, Fergus Garrett, the chosen method for all of these but the Lychnis (rose campion) is generally to sow seeds in summer, pot them up and put in a cold frame in October, bed out the next April or May, then rip out the plants as soon as their blooms have faded. Naturally his Lupines make mine look diseased. Damn him to hell and all that. For fuzzy-leaved Verbascums, which he winters in their final positions, he actually suspends a plate of glass over their crowns to keep them dry so they don't rot!
All that said, his plant combinations are exquisite, and many of them are obtainable by most gardeners in temperate climates. More important, the principles he espouses, the color combinations, and the methods of succession among broad types of plants, are all transferable to less intensive methods, or to other plants which are more practical for your situation. Further, I defy anyone to read this book without discovering several new plants he will plan to try out. I am made newly aware especially of several with true- and deep-blue flowers. Buy or borrow this book, but also consider his older books, "The Adventurous Gardener" and "The Well-Tempered Garden." They have essentially no illustrations, but a wealth of cultural information and design ideas and critiques of many plants and cultivars.
I love this book!.......2005-04-06
Normally I don't get into gardening books...I'm a sucker for the pictures, but find the text boring.
This book however has been so fun to read -- and, yes the pictures are beautiful. It helps create a garden for each season, and it shows photos from the same garden each season. I've just planted based on some ideas in this book, so I guess I'll need to report back how it works out.

Product Description

Book Description
Being happy doesn't have to be hard, says prominent personal coach Laura Berman Fortgang. We each possess an internal compass that expresses our individual wisdom and points to the things that would most fulfill us. Personal and professional satisfaction, Fortgang believes, comes from tapping into this wisdom.
In Living Your Best Life, she offers ten tried-and-true strategies that help us to access our own inner knowledge to achieve what she calls a "best life"-a life that awaits all of us, in which gains come more easily because we've learned to honor our true desires and work with our individual talents rather than exhausting our energy on a traditional model of achievement. Her techniques focus on asking ourselves what we really want instead of frenetically trying to "have it all." We learn to ask questions that move us forward, not backward, to discover our own unique "lucrative purpose," and to design a "magnet" life plan that draws to us the more rewarding existence we deserve.
Customer Reviews:
THIS WOMAN IS DOING A GREAT JOB!!!!!.......2007-01-13
I read this book at a time when I didn't know if I was coming or going! Although it didn't get me the ideal job, help me lose 30 pounds in 3 weeks or buy real estate no-money-down, it did help get me in touch with an old friend : my own inner voice!!!
Not particularly realistic or helpful.......2006-02-10
According to the author everyone has a built-in "blueprint for life." Her job and the reader's job is to discover what that is. But the discovery process is decidedly non analytical; trying to understand the past - the why's of this world - is non constructive, if not negative, in this venture. The reader, patient, or client ( the author runs a life coaching business ) must be future oriented, focusing on "wants" and not "shoulds." One should rely upon intuition and feelings far more so than "information." Furthermore, all areas of life are equally open to this approach: career, relationships, etc. Details on a micro level are irrelevant or get in the way.
Like virtually every so-called "self-help" book, the author maintains that the person in need of help is the primary obstacle to success. It is up to him or her to make the life-changing transformation, with of course the possible help of a life coach. The author gives the example of deciding on the day on which she was to be admitted to a mental facility, after five years of depression and therapy, to suddenly change her life. Apparently, multi-year depression is some sort of superficial malady that can be cast aside in a heartbeat, if only properly motivated. Also in keeping with the genre, the author admits to no social or economic structures or conditions that can and do present very real obstacles in attaining success in life. Issues like class, vastly unequal resources, or power dynamics apparently do not exist in the author's world. Being down-sized from a thirty year career is just another "opportunity" in life-coach speak, not a devastating blow that can be extremely difficult to overcome for many realistic reasons.
Granted it is possible to think one's situation to death. Analysis can be paralysis. But is success in life merely identifying wants, adopting the right attitudes, and getting out of the way to let it all happen? At one point, the author suggests that the "best life cannot help but find you." For many, life is just a bit more complicated despite efforts made that are least equal to any detailed in her book.
The target audience is not particularly clear. In one example, the author describes a supervisor becoming more effective by asking an employee "what" questions as opposed to "why" questions. That sounds like Mgt 101, not life transformation. In another case, a manager has "negative" guilt over firing an employee. When he realizes that he is helping the firm, apparently that constitutes "living your best life." And then there is the other extreme of the author going from admittance to a hospital to life coach and successful author in a matter of a few years.
The book is just overly simplistic. It makes both unreal, exaggerated claims and does not realistically examine life's complexities and the difficulties in assessing and solving problems. In that regard, it may actually perform a disservice. The book offers mostly life cheerleading, which may be exactly what some are looking for.
Wise questions help you arrive at your own wise answers.......2005-10-15
This book is a different kettle of fish from many other self-help books, and it deserves a read.
A lot of books shame you about current life choices (you're dependent; lazy; immature; in denial; codependent; not actualized, etc.) and lecture you about how you must change in order to FULFILL your DESTINY*! "...You're right," you might say, sighing. "So if I should do something else instead, why don't I just DO it?"
Fortgang says you need reinforcement and continuity to bridge the change. Her strongest suite is helping you recognize how your life purpose is already being enacted, to understand how your essential nature already infuses your life, and build from there. For example: My nature is that of an observer and analyst (duh). My purpose is not To Be A [drum roll] """WRITER""", but to communicate information effectively through my strongest means--which happens to be writing.
The cool thing about Fortgang is that she doesn't lecture you; she leads you to teach yourself and create the kind of continuity that works for you.
*Anyone else notice irony in that message?
Living your life is a discovery.......2005-03-20
Laura Berman Fortgang derives both wise women brilliance through intellect blended with intution to uncover your true life. Fortgang's extensive excercises combines and connect head with heart to emerge from our own cocoon.
Worked for me!!!!!!!!.......2004-10-29
This book walked me through the process of completely transforming my life. It is full of useful exercises that really really work. If you're unhappy with your life, don't run blindly to the next thing. Take the time, do the work, and figure out what it is your really desire, in order to find true happiness. I went from a point in my life where I was unhappy with my career, relationship, home, location, and general quality of life. Over the process of a year and a half, I now have my dream job in an incredibly beautiful location along with wonderful home, relationship, and lifestyle. If you believe you can do it and that you deserve nothing but the best, you CAN make it happen. So do it!

Masterful work in the love story genre.......2001-11-10
Man with insular personality inherits home from eccentric aunt with a peculiar pet-related condition attached. Man's first instinct is to sidestep condition and reap profit. Man learns to love home, pet and new woman in his life. This sounds like the plot of a Victorian play or a 40s B movie. But Where You Are is instead a very fine novel, due to its subtle narrative and refined character development. We come to understand our two protagonists in the silences rather than in what they say, and the "romantic salvation" of the male protagonist is not treachly, soapy, or forced.
This is a textbook example in how to take tried and true themes and make them new with witty, simple writing. More importantly, this was a really fun read.
Truly enjoyable.......1997-06-12
Let me start by saying that this is not a book for critics. It's not nearly disfunctional enough. This is a book for people who want to read something that makes them smile, that makes them dwell on the difficulties and the riches of life, that makes them take a deep breath when they finally put the book down at the end and be glad they made the journey.Clearly I liked it. First of all, you should read this book for the writing alone -- beautiful, concise, visual prose that is so rare these days. The novel is also extremely witty, with an intelligent sense of humor. You begin looking over the shoulder of a young man in his late 20s/early 30s dealing with an unexpected turn in life: he inherits a house that comes with a dog. He's not sure he wants the house. He's definitely sure he doesn't want the dog. But things aren't that simple, and you get to enjoy watching Lake, the main character, deal with life's unexpected turns. Whether cat lovers (not that there's anything wrong with that) will be able to relate, I don't know. I'm a dog person. The book shifts into a love story that, in my opinion, was incredibly rich simply because it feels so real, so down to earth. It captures two people as they fall in love and try to figure out if they are falling in love, and somehow it does it right. This book isn't for everyone...there's no disfunctional families, no melodrama, no biography of Jackie O. This book says life has its difficulties and it's confusions, but it also has beauty. I loved it and think that it's is a rare gem among thenovels being written today
